The Mesabi Range extends continuously from near Grand Rapids, on the Mississippi River, E.N.E. for a distance of about 1120 miles to near Birch Lake, where it is covered by the large gabbro flow which forms the base of the Keweenawan series. The same formation (Mesabi) appears again near Gunflint Lake on the international boundary, and shows as far east as Thunder Bay on the north shore of Lake Superior. Between Mesabi station, on the Duluth and Iron Range Railway, and Birch Lake, although considerable exploration work has been done, there is no evidence of concentration of ore in workable bodies. The Gunflint beds are thin alternating layers of chert and hematite. Alt the workable deposits at present known, on the Mesabi, lie between Mesabi station and Grand Rapids, the greater number being St. Louis County simplified geologic column is given herewith instead of the complete correlation table given by the United States Geological survey.

My first regular job nearly fell through. My parents were spending the summer in California and I joined them at Lake Tahoe where we were guests at the lovely summer home of the Reids of Belmont. The time went quickly but I was eager to start work so I left for Bisbee a few days earlier than I had arranged. This was lucky, as just after I left a letter came from Gene Whitely, chief engineer of Calumet and Arizona, saying that because of the depressed copper industry there would be no job. I reached Bisbee on a Saturday morning, a day or two before my 23rd birthday, July 27, 1907. The brown plastei four-story Copper Queen Hotel was only a few steps from the station where the branch railway ended. I rented the cheapest room on the top floor and, of course, there was no elevator. I soon learned how to walk up the mile of switching tracks to the Calumet and Arizona office at the Irish Mag mine. I was horrified when Whitely told me about his letter telling me not to come, but since I had not received it he relented and said I could work for a short time anyhow. I was to start at 7:30 the next Monday morning, "holding the ignorant end of the tape”-in other words being surveyor's assistant, at $100 a month. Hours were from 7:30 to 5: 00, seven days a week. I spent Sunday walking around the town. I rented a room at the Royal Lodging House, which was cheaper than the hotel. It smelled strongly of carbolic acid but that meant no bugs. Compared with Cobalt or Cripple Creek, Bisbee didn't seem unattractive. The main street, with one or two-storied stores and saloons, followed the bottom of the canyon with high steep hills on both sides. Chromitiferous overburden containing nickel in oxide form is reduced with CO-CO2-N2 gas mixtures. This converts the nickel oxide to metallic nickel and restricts the iron oxide to the magnetite state to extract the nickel. Reduction experiments were carried out on 500-g samples in a bench-scale vertical reactor. The tests were run to establish the process parameters, including the optimum partial pressure of CO, the reducing gas flow rate, granule size and roasting time. The reduced calcine is then subjected to an ammonia-ammoniacal carbonate leach to extract nickel selectively as its amine complex. More than 90% of the nickel could be extracted with a volumetric CO/(CO+CO2) ratio of 0.57 at 750°C and a roasting time of 90 min. The addition of 2.5% (by weight) charcoal to the granules improved nickel extraction by 11 % to 19%. Nickel leaching efficiency with ammoniacal solution is compared to the bromine-methanol method.

After accepting the invitation to make this appearance today, it occurred to me that the subject matter which had been assigned to me, namely, the purpose and role of an advisor, was, contrary to what; some people might think, a controversial subject. In my brief lifetime, I have discovered that the world is full of advisors; that is to say, there are many people who undertake to render advice concerning subject matters upon which they may, or may not be qualified to speak. It shall be my purpose today to set forth what now appears to be the function of the members of the Advisory Council to the U. S. Public Land Law Review Commission; and, in so doing, I hope that I do not offend the Commission or any other-member of the Advisory Council with whom I serve. It has always been my personal conception of the role of an advisor that he should tender advice when it is requested, and then only if he has prepared himself concerning the matter upon which the advice is being given. I am sure it was the Congressional intent at the time the Public Land Law Review Commission was established indeed it was the hope. of Congress--that those of us who were to become members of the Advisory Council were informed upon certain particular subjects and then at the proper time express our opinions upon these subjects-and, by the same token, not attempt to enter opinions upon problems with which we have no experience in theory or in actuality. Some wag once said that if Columbus had had an advisory council, he would still be waiting at the dock in Spain, and there is more truth than fiction in that statement. With this problem in mind, let us examine the purpose of the Advisory Council itself.

Though computer simulation of coal beneficiation has been in use for nearly two decades the models used in the programs for the simulation of the crushing processes concentrate mainly on the size distribution. This paper suggests the use of an empirical equation approximating to the cumulative probability or error function for the simulation of the liberation process in coal crushing. The algorithm outlined here can be incorporated in a computer program already having a size distribution model.

The line scan video photometer is a personal computer (PC) based, software-driven instrument which is used for the real time, on-line analysis of industrial process streams. The novelty of the instrument lies in the integration of its various components: (l) a true Red/Green/Blue (R/G/B) color video camera; (2) a unique, line-scan color sample and hold technique which provides a 4 to 20 mA analog signal to a commercial 12 bit analog to digital (A/D) converter; (3) software which converts data through a color absorbance algorithm to correlate elemental color to concentration; and (4) software-based control which utilizes color data, along with temperature and conductivity data to control process equipment. The photometer can be used for noninvasive analysis wherever color hues are representative of process variables such as chemical concentrations or mineralogy color reflectance. The line scan video photometer has been successfully demonstrated in solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) and ball mill circuits of copper producers.

The scrutiny given to model predictions of pit-lake water quality has focused attention on the uncertainty associated with long-term predictions. Although comparison of probabilistic predictive modeling of water quality in existing pit lakes indicates that short-term predictions can bracket most parameters, uncertainties in wall-rock reactions and the stability of groundwater composition and climate remain unquantified. This overview of the uncertainties associated with longer-term predictions is presented as support for those considering policy decisions that must be made in the absence of reliable estimates of future conditions.

The geostatistical method of indicator kriging (IK) was extended to analyze two-dimensional distributions of rock joint orientations. The IK method provides a non-parametric approach for spatial analysis of local probability distribu- tions. By taking into account the spatial correlation of rock joint outcomes and the relative geometry between estimation unit and samples, the IK method provides optimum, spatially conditioned estimates. The estimation method was tested by comparing distributions of actual mapped rock joint orientations with their corresponding kriged estimates. The comparisons show the unbiasedness and accuracy of the non-parametric approach for estimating local probability distributions.

The Bullfrog Mine is an underground gold mine that uses the underhand-cut-and-fill mining method. The portal was established on June 18, 1991. Mining is expected to be completed by the summer of 1999. This paper starts by discussing what it took to get from nothing to 2000 tons-per-day backfill, and ends with a hindsight commentary on things that did and did not help.

What are the benefits and limitations of financial analysis software as a decision making tool in the mining industry? Traditionally, the assumptions and simplifications imposed by complex and uncertain information have been viewed as the main obstacle to reaching an optimum decision. Recently, however, phenomena such as corporate culture and power structure have received increasing attention as significant influences on organizational decision making processes. Studies of these phenomena have suggested an alternative way of understanding decision making processes and an alternative view of the role played by computer analysis in such processes. This paper presents these two views of decision making, and examines what each implies about the role of financial analysis software as a decision making tool in the mining industry.

The Culberson ore body is a bioepigenetic sulfur deposit located in the Delaware basin. Sulfur occurs in the Upper Permian Castile, Salado and Rustler Formations. Most of the ore body forms a subhorizontal layer within the Salado Formation. Abundant cave fill deposits of Rustler and younger lithologies occur within the Salado Formation and predate mineralization. The cave fill deposits provided porosity zones within the otherwise impermeable sulfate host rock and controlled sites of mineralization. A northeast trending fracture zone near the west edge of the ore body localized some deep mineralization and may have allowed migration of hydrocarbons from depth.

Upgrading molybdenite ore can be technically difficult and expensive if talc is a major impurity in the ore. The layered structure of molybdenite and talc decreases the surface specificity of floatation and suppression agents, thereby making molybdenite ore beneficiation inefficient if under some wet processing methods. However, oxidic talc surfaces may be distinct from the sulfidic or oxysulfidic molybdenite surfaces, such distinction related to electron work functions and/or densities of electron donors/acceptors sites. If such differences are present, the upgrading of finely sized molybdenite ore by dry triboelectrostatic methods may hold advantages over traditional wet methods.

A generic task summary for design and implementation of hydrogeology programs at open-pit mine operations is presented as a guideline for management. Rigorous assessment of the local and regional hydrogeologic system is necessary to plan dewatering activities and to address environmental concerns. Dewatering activities include calculation of dewatering requirements, design of dewatering systems and evaluation of dewatering-water disposal areas. Environmental concerns include calculation of dewatering and water-disposal impacts, mitigation of soil and ground-water contamination and acquisition of water rights. Three-dimensional numerical models are commonly used to support these analyses. A thoroughly developed hydrogeology program provides an interactive basis for dewatering feasibility decisions and for support of environmental permits and regulatory compliance.

A cooperative study was undertaken in a neutral atmosphere by representatives of the environmental community, the mining industry and state government to identify and resolve environmental issues associated with base and precious metal mining before a commercial mining development is announced. The study included testing Minnesota's as-yet-untried nonferrous mining regulatory program using three hypothetical mining developments sited in environmentally sensitive areas where future mining could occur. Results include identification of critical paths for regulatory decision making, identification of particularly sensitive environmental issues that mill need continued deliberation before resolution and characterization of data necessary for environmental review and permitting decisions.

Rail is a short haul transportation alternative you must consider. Transportation today is the largest controllable cost in the total cost of production of goods. In fact it is the one cost area where aggressive management, using new tools, can achieve significant reductions. You can't control the price of metals in the world market, you can't control labor rates since they are tied to industry norms, and the price of raw materials are relatively insensitive to specific price reductions to your firm. Transportation is the one area where major savings are now being realized. Sample Movements First, I will give you several examples of short haul rail moves to make you a believer that they do exist. Mill flotation tailings impounded at the Gooseberry Mine site between 1976 and 1984 were determined to be an economic source of gold and silver recoverable by standard heap leach technology in conjunction with feed agglomeration. Metal recovery at 85 percent Au, 75 percent Ag is attained on properly agglomerated (pelletized) tailings which average 85 percent -75 micron. Because the impounded tailings averaged over 18 percent moisture (32 percent moisture maximum at depth) in place behind the storage dam, the mining method, mixing and agglomeration technique, and materials handling practice were major considerations in making this operation a financial success.

Zaldivar is an open pit copper mine operation located in the Atacama Desert, in northern Chile. The plant produces Cu cathodes using 4 solvent extraction trains. The plant was started up May 1995. Since 1996 the plant has been using on-stream analyzers based on X-ray fluorescence and titration for process monitoring and control. Elemental analyzer alone is not able to provide the critical information for plant operation, it has to be complemented by on-stream titrators integrated to one sampling system. The analyzers are located in a prefabricated shelter. The analyzer system project, operation and performance issues are the main topic of this paper.

Seismic reflection is a powerful geophysical exploration method that has been in widespread use in the petroleum industry for more than 60 years. This paper addresses some basic principles of the method and its application at depths shallower than 30 m (100 ft). Since 1980, the shallow reflection technique has been increasingly used for engineering and environmental problems, such as mapping bedrock beneath alluvium and delineating intra-alluvial features near hazardous waste sites, detecting voids in coal and karst, defining the top of the saturated zone and mapping shallow faults. New applications will be added with improved resolution and increased cost-effectiveness.

This paper addresses two issues affecting the international ferrochromium market as they pertain to the changing pattern of U. S. chromium import dependency. These issues are 1) the long-term ferrochromium production cost differential between the United States and the Republic of South Africa and 2) the ability of Zimbabwe to expand ferrochromium production and exportation. This paper draws upon the data and analyses of a recent Bureau of Mines Minerals availability Program appraisal that evaluated the international availability of chromium in the form of chromite and ferrochromium from 10 market economy countries. South African ferrochromium producers are shown to have a long-term production cost advantage over U.S. producers of $0.03 to $0.04 per pound of contained chromium, in 1981 dollars. Zimbabwean ferrochromium production and exportation are expected to increase in the future. Major expansions of production capacity will be dependent upon alleviating potentially serious constraints in electric power, rail, and port facilities. In the long term, ferrochromium production costs in Zimbabwe are expected to increase faster than the rate of inflation, because as chromite mining from the podiform resources in Zimbabwe decreases, production from the Great Dyke resources will increase.
