As the total cost of labor has significantly increased over the past ten years, older underground mines have found it more difficult to compete- in a limited demand coal market. Many of the older mines were developed extensively into a reserve requiring a large number of workers to maintain and rehabilitate extensive track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, a large number of fans were required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. This paper focuses upon problems which beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability.

The Brunswick Mine, a Division of Noranda Inc., produces zinc, lead, copper, and bulk lead-zinc concentrates through underground mining of a large massive sulphide deposit. The mining method employed is longhole open stoping with delayed backfilling. In 1996 Brunswick began a review of its mining methods and backfilling operations. In 1997 the decision was made to convert the backfill system from cemented and uncemented rockfill to paste backfill prepared from mill tailings. This paper will describe the features of the backfill preparation and distribution systems, review the handling of technical issues, and discuss experiences since plant commissioning.

This paper describes four new families of flotation products which are currently being introduced at the industrial level. A brief summary of the chemical basis behind each product family will be given. This is then followed by a selection of flotation examples which illustrate the more important use characteristics that have been observed to date. "Numerous aspects of underground construction, from structural stability to construction costs, depended on the tunnel quality, including blast damage and the Excavation Damage Zone. Accurately quantifying the extent and severity of damaged rock is a problem. Recent technical developments in the field of Measurement While Drilling (MWD), including software for on-board logging and on-site analysis, have shown potential for rock-mass characterization. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and P-wave velocity measurement have also improved and show similar potential. This paper explores the use of MWD, GPR and P-wave velocity measurements and uses them in techniques for excavation damage characterization and prediction. The paper is based on data collected from a small underground waste-collection site in central Stockholm, Sweden. The data is correlated against rock-mass characteristics and their responses are evaluated. Results indicate potential for excavation damage characterization for all tested techniques, which could minimize blasting damage and improve the over-all tunnel quality. 1 INTRODUCTION During underground excavation the rock mass is influenced in many ways. The Excavation Damage Zone (EDZ) is a result of these influences. The EDZ can be defined by an irreversible change in rock mass properties, for example increased permeability. EDZ is influenced by the excavation method, the rock mass properties and the in-situ stresses in the area of the tunneling. Since the 1990s research has been done on the EDZ by Emsley et al. (1997), Christiansson et al. (2005), Olsson et al. (2009), Ouchterlony et al. (2009), Ittner et al. (2014), and Siren et al. (2015). Based on past literature the EDZ have in this paper been separated in the following subzones: 1. Failure Zone or over-break is the area outside the planned tunnel profile, including the Look-Out and hole deviation. This zone consists of fracture networks (both natural and blasting-induced), that caused rock fall-outs. The extent of the over-break can be determined by volumetric scanning and photogrammetry and the half cast factor can be used as a damage indicator. 2. The Damaged Zone is split into three parts and but the quantity and depth of damage is difficult to measure. Although it can be visualized by sawing of rock slices in the tunnel wall (Olsson et al. 2009), diamond coring (DC) or P-wave velocity reduction (Jern 2001): a. Inner Damage Zone (Crush Zone): It is located directly around the drill hole, and is caused by the shock-wave energy of the detonation. The micro fractures in the Crush Zone produce a white-wash (rock dust) in the half cast. b. Transition Zone: This zone consists of micro fractures that connect and form macro fractures, both radially and parallel to the tunnel wall. The macro fractures are caused by the gas expansion during the detonation of the explosive; it increases the pressure in the (micro) fractures and creates the macro fractures. Seismic reflection, rock slicing and core drilling can be used for the examination. c. Progressing Zone: In this zone the existing radial fractures propagate due to the increase gas pressure inside these macro fractures. Examination methods are seismic reflection, rock slicing and core drilling. In addition, the Peak Particle Velocity (vibrations) could be used to estimate the depth (Tesarik et al. 2011)."

A 1 t/d continuous elution pilot plan is being operated by General Mining at their Grootvlei Gold Mine using the technology developed at the Anglo American Research Laboratories. Flowsheet design and plant erection was carried out by Van Eck & Lurie and completed in December 1989. Following the conclusion of six test runs designed to optimise reagent additions, it was shown that elution efficiencies of 98-99% could be achieved using reagent additions as· low as 16 kg/ton of carbon NaCN and 28 kg/ton NaOH while consistently producing eluted carbon containing less than 50 g/t gold. Significant savings were indicated when compared and power were indicated when com­pared with the traditional batch AARL, Zadra and Micron alcohol elution procedures.

In this paper the activation behavior of quartz using Ca(OH)2 as an activator in quartz reverse flotation with anionic collector was evaluated and their adsorption behavior was investigated using a variety of techniques. The adsorption of the collector KS-I on the surface of quartz with and without Ca2+ was primarily characterized using Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation technique (QCM-D), which is a high sensitivity in-situ surface characterization technique. The flotation performance was evaluated using a laboratory mechanical flotation cell at different process parameters such as pH, collector dosage, and Ca(OH)2 dosage. The anionic collector evaluated was a commercial fatty acid KS-I. The QCM-D data showed that the collector adsorbed on quartz more readily with Ca2+ as activator. The mass and structural property of the collector layer adsorbed on quartz surface at 2.16×10-3 mol/L of Ca2+, 0.3 g/L of collector and pH 12.0 have been studied using the technique of QCM-D. The chemisorption of the collector KS-I on the surface of quartz in presence of Ca2+ were also demonstrated by means of zeta potential, QCM-D and FTIR analysis.

Traveling grate is a widely used process for iron ore pellet production, but the thermal state of pellets in the drying section is still unclear. In this study, the temperature distribution of the drying section was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results indicate there is a coupling effect in the drying section of a traveling grate. Gas with higher temperature in down-draught drying (DDD) transfers heat to the up-draught drying (UDD) through the gap of the insulation board, and the temperature gradient of the pellet bed changes before reaching the insulation board. The characteristics of pellet bed expected to appear in DDD are displayed in UDD in advance. To verify the model, a contrast experiment was conducted.

Recent events pertaining to U. S. energy needs and development of alternative energy fuel resources have made the American public more aware of past and present coal mining operations, and their impacts on the nation's economy and environment. This awareness has developed rapidly due to increased government involvement and consequent media coverage. This is true particularly in the Western states and in Texas. One of the consequences of this increased public awareness is public concern over the perceived and real consequences of mining operations. Emphasis has been placed on potential releases of toxic and hazardous substances, and possible carcinogens. The result of this public concern is a mounting effort at both state and Federal levels to promote stricter laws regulating the mining industry.

This paper summarizes the process development behind the design of three different types of paste fill plants at operating Canadian hard rock mines. Each application has a unique paste backfill mix and process which utilizes the materials economically available to the mine site. The different plants produce paste fill composed of base metal tailings, a blend of recovered disposal pond tailings fines and alluvial sand, gold ore tailings, and a blend of gold ore tailings and alluvial sand. This work has led to the joint development by Inco and GL&V Ontario of the compaction storage mechanism for the de-watering of mill tailings to a paste consistency.

The oxide fraction of industrial zinc ash was characterized in terms of chemical and phase composition, leaching behavior in sulfuric acid solutions, and leaching thermal effect. The waste product contained about 68 percent zinc (Zn), 7 percent chlorine (Cl), 2 percent aluminum (Al) and less than 1 percent other metals, such as iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), calcium (Ca) and silicon (Si). It consisted mainly of zinc oxide contaminated with metallic zinc and zinc hydroxide chloride. The dissolution of metals from the zinc ash was determined for solid-to-liquid ratios ranging from 100 to 500 kg/m3, acid concentrations of 10 and 20 percent, and temperatures of 20 and 40 °C. This paper describes the results of using shear flocculation and flotation known as aggregative flotation technique for the enrichment of coal-derived char produced from mild gasification process. Aggregative flotation is a separation process which involves the use of suitable aggregating liquid under the action of high shear forces to render hydrophobic surface of coal-derived char particles to aggregate in an aqueous slurry. The fine carbonaceous particles are aggregated into larger floes while the impurities remain hydrophilic. In subsequent flotation process, the char aggregates are then separated from mineral matters by aeration in the flotation cell. The floatability of char aggregates and removal of mineral matters from chars are studied in a lab scale flotation column cell. The effect of various operating parameters on the aggregative flotation responses is presented. Emulsification of aggregating liquid using high intensity agitation and ultrasonic energy provides excellent aggregating liquid dispersion and increases selectivity for char aggregation. In subsequent flotation process, it results in significantly increasing the flotation rate of char aggregates. The microscopic examinations of bubble attachment to coal-derived char particles under various aggregating liquid dispersion levels were conducted by induction time measurement. The distributions of hydrophobicity of char particles and char aggregates prepared under various aggregating liquid dispersion techniques were measured by film flotation. The char particles prepared under high intensity emulsification attach at significantly faster rates to air bubble and with lower mean critical wetting surface tension than that of char with direct aggregating liquid addition. An interrelationship of increasing in flotation rate/combustible recovery with decreasing in induction time, mean critical wetting surface tension and dispersion of hydrophobicity on the char particles and char aggregates were obtained.

Attendees at December?s Arizona SME Section Conference at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort outside of Tucson, AZ were feeling optimistic and ready to get to work after a year of steady growth and recovery in the mining industry. During the two-day event (Dec. 5-6, 2010) and the preceding American Mining Hall of Fame banquet and awards ceremony, the focus was on copper, worldwide population growth and regulatory pressures, with several smart new projects featured alongside updates to traditional large-scale copper development projects. Keynote speaker Timothy Snider, chair of the University of Arizona?s Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources, hit the mood of cautious optimism when he analyzed the global demand for resources, using the case example of copper. Over the next 20 years, he said, the world?s population is expected to grow to 9.2 billion and the average annual per capita copper use is expected to rise from 2.2 to 4.5 kg (5 to 10 lb). The increase in demand will provide tremendous opportunity for mining companies, he said, but cautioned that the opportunities are balanced by negative influences on demand and pressures on supply. While demand for copper is currently growing, Snider noted that there were significant downward pressures on demand as well. These included a western world that is overbuilt, in-creasing use of substitute materials in new construction and the rise of wireless devices. He also noted new regulatory pressures, and pointed out that resource development now had to occur within a context of sustainability on several levels.

Most iron ores treated by the R-N direct reduction process yield metallic iron products considerably lower in titanium, manganese, and chromium oxides and alkaline metal sulfates/sulfides than were contained in the original ores. These metallic iron products are suitable as feed stock for the open hearth and electric steel-making furnaces. The elements which are rejected in part are acceptable in the product since the product is designed to by-pass the blast furnace. R-N reduction conditions (PCO+H2-1 atmosphere, 1830° to 2150° F.) are adjusted for each ore. The iron ore which is reduced to 90 to 95 percent metallic iron is then subjected to the conventional beneficiation techniques. Under these conditions, 55 to 80 percent of titanium oxides, 75 to 95 percent of manganese oxides, 60 to 90 percent of chromium oxides and up to 97 percent of alkaline metal sulfates contained in the ore are rejected with the gangue to the non- magnetic tailings. The metallic iron products illustrated in this work contained 89 to 96 percent total iron, one to five percent TiO2, 0.2 to one percent MnO, 0.3 to 1.6 percent Cr2O3 and/or up to one percent alkaline metal sulfide. Usually only one of these components was present. Recoveries ranged from 80 to 96 percent of the iron in ore.

The impact of a methane explosion on mining operations cannot be over-emphasized. The explosion is a result of rapid combustion when a methane/air mixture is ignited by an unexpected energy release, such as a mine fire, electrical arc or sparks caused by frictions or rock falls. In most cases, an ignition of methane/air mixture could result in a deflagration other than detonation. Resulting flames and overpressure induced by a methane deflagration will harm neighboring miners and local ventilation control devices.. ,It is essential that the mechanism of an explosion and associated destructiveness be fully understood. This research seeks to predict an influence region of an incident happened within a representative underground mine geometry. The most common geometric changes in an underground coal mine are bends, regulators/doors, obstacle in airways and changes in sectional area. These geometric changes could result in an attenuation of the flame and pressure wave as a result of a methane deflagration. A study of this phenomenon could enable mine planners to have better understanding of the over-pressure redistribution due to the explosion. Both numerical and experimental work has been done in this study to ascertain a better insight of this potentially devastating event. The experimental data are also used to validate the turbulence and combustion models used in this test.

Analytical costs are a major part of exploration programs in developing nations which may lack adequate laboratories. Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), a variant of atomic emission spectroscopy, can reduce exploration analytical costs and can provide the analytical results in <1 minute. CPI is now marketing battery-powered, backpack mounted analyzers, using LIBS to analyze for many elements of interest to the explorationist. LIBS is well suited to the analysis of elements in industrial minerals. Limits of detection in ppm for some of these are: Li-1, Be-2, Na-100, B-33, Sr-10, Ba-300, Cs-1, K-500, Fe-500, Mg-500, and Ti-500.

Introduction For many major mining projects the time frame from initial planning to production can be measured in decades. Hecla&apos;s Silver Shaft project, scheduled to go into production by the end of this year, includes a complete surface facility, shaft with an ultimate depth of 2.4 km (7,700 ft), complete ore pass and loading pocket system, and 610 m (2,000 ft) of development drifting and stope preparation. The project was conceived in the fall of 1979, and the duration of a mere four years from conceptual engineering to production is testimony to what can be accomplished when a mining company and a contractor work as a team rather than developing into two warring camps, as often happens. Thionocarbamate flotation reagents have enjoyed a niche position in the recovery of copper sulfides and activated sphalerites since their introduction in the mid 1950&apos;s (Harris, 1954). Thionocarbamates containing an allyl group (-CH2- CH=CH2), introduced recently Lewellyn, 1985; Nagaraj, 1988; Avotins, 1991), are used commercially as collectors for copper sulfides and activated sphalerite. Laboratory flotation tests and plant usage have demonstrated that allyl-containing thionocarbamate collectors exhibit certain unique properties that distinguish them from the corresponding dialkyl thionocarbamates. Spectroscopic (FTIR, XPS) and wettability studies of N-allyl iso-butyl thionocarbamate (AIBTC) and its saturated analog N-propyl iso-butyl thionocarbamate (NPIBTC) adsorbed on copper at pH 9 were performed in order to investigate whether there were any fundamental reasons for these differences. Flotation tests were carried out on chalcocite, copper ore and an activated sphalerite.
