Searles Lake is an evaporite basin located near the community of Trona in northwestern San Bernardino County, CA. Searles Valley Minerals Operations Inc. (SVM), a subsidiary of Nirma Limited, currently manufactures more than 1.58 Mt/a (1.75 million stpy) of industrial minerals from natural brines produced from several lakebeds within the basin. The chemical manufacturing facilities in Searles Valley represent extremely complex operations involving solution mining and mineral extraction processes.

Mining operations have long been accused of causing a disruption to local, domestic and agricultural water supplies. More recently, concern for water supplies has increased with the advent of high-extraction mining techniques, namely longwall mining. Theoretically, any water bearing zone in the overburden above a high-extraction mining operation may be affected by mining. In some cases, a confining bed may be fractured causing a loss of water to a particular zone. In other cases, increased fracture permeability may enhance the ability of an aquifer to transmit and deliver water. Unfortunately, only a limited amount of studies have been conducted that characterize hydrologic changes and also quant1fythe magnitude of mining-induced subsidence. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted such a study at a mine site located in Greene County, PA. A total of 8 water wells were drilled and hydrologic parameters such as specific capacity, transmissivity and well yield were determined both before and after mining. Electronic water level recorders were installed on each water well to provide continuous observations of water level fluctuations.

Hydrometallurgical production of zinc from concentrates is generally carried out by H2SO4 leaching. For the smooth operation of this process, some harmful components must be removed from the leach solution before the electrolysis stage; MgO is one of these compounds. Zinc concentrate samples from the Mount Isa mines were used in leaching tests. Leaching tests with an aqueous solution of H2SO4 and SO2 gas were carried out at various temperatures, pH levels and leaching durations. While duration and the pH value of the solution were effective parameters in H2SO4 leaching, temperature and pH were more effective in SO2 leaching for the removal of MgCO3 and CaCO3. Removal of MgCO3 and CaCO3 was generally achieved at low pH values. The results show that SO2 gas can be a good alternative to sulfuric acid in the leaching of MgCO3 and CaCO3

INTRODUCTION Face haulage in underground mines and pit haulage in surface mines are the principal domains of rubber- tired haulage vehicles. In underground mines, cable- reeled or battery-operated shuttle cars and diesel-powered load-haul-dump vehicles are used; trucks are primarily used in surface mines. Although many concerns go into the selection of rubber-tired haulage vehicles, such as clearance and tire life, the most important factor from a mine-planning standpoint is the production capability of the vehicle in the mine environment. Therefore, this chapter will address this topic. UNDERGROUND FACE-HAULAGE VEHICLES The selection process for underground face-haulage vehicles is, in some respects, much simpler than that of the other haulage systems discussed to this point. It is simpler because these vehicles, which transfer the mined material from the face to the intermediate haul¬age system, are manufactured in various size ranges to cope with the confinement of underground opening widths and heights. However, since these vehicles oper¬ated in an intermittent fashion in conjunction with a constantly advancing face, the system's lack of perma¬nence and overall dynamic nature create a more diffi¬cult situation for predicting productivity. The emphasis in this section will be on prediction of productivity. There are three fundamental steps that must be taken to analyze the productivity potential of any face¬haulage system: l) Recognize the geologic (seam thickness, etc. ) and mining (opening widths, etc.) constraints that affect the velocity/clearance aspects of the haulage equipment, and select equipment from manufacturers' specifications with these con¬straints in mind. 2) Secure the elemental times of the face-haulage system. 3) Incorporate the elemental times into an accepta¬ble mine plan. By recognizing the geologic and mining constraints that affect the system layout, parameters, such as vehi¬cle payload, tonnage to be hauled per cut, and haulage distances, can easily be determined. Elemental times can be developed in two ways: 1) In an existing operation, a time study of the dynamic system can be conducted by placing three time-study engineers at the following static locations; (1) near the loading machine, (2) near the change-out point outby the face, and (3) near the dump. By synchronizing their watches and recording the actions of the haulage vehicles at these three locations, their time studies can be reduced to provide elemental times, such as vehicle tram rates (empty or loaded), vehicle discharge times, and loading rates. 2) In the absence of an existing operation, average values for the elemental times can be provided from other mines operating in similar condi¬tions, or by the manufacturers themselves.

The Iron Ore Company of Canada mines, processes and ships crude iron ore, concentrate and pellets from the rich ore bodies of the Labrador Trough area in the extreme north-eastern part of Canada, some five hundred miles from Montreal (see figure 1). There are three main sites of activity. At Schefferville, approximately 12 million tons a year of crude ore (chiefly limonite) are mined, crushed, screened and shipped to Sept-Iles. At Labrador City, 40 million tons of specular hematite are mined annually for processing into 17 million tons of concentrate. Of this, 9 million tons are converted into pellets. All product 1s shipped to Sept-Iles. At Sept-Iles, on the north coast of the St. Lawrence, a six million ton per year concentrator and pellet plant process much of the Scheffervllle ore into high-grade pellets. Also at Sept-Iles are the company's administration offices stockpiles and shipping facilities. The Terminal facilities can berth and load a 250,000 ton bulk carrier at 19,000 tons per hour.

There is an increasing requirement for geophysical surveys carried out during geotechnical investigations to provide direct information about rock quality or other geotechnical parameters. With the paucity of information to correlate geophysical results with actual rock properties, this is still difficult to achieve and additional research effort needs to be performed to address this issue. Nowadays, several researchers have been described detailed studies which designed specifically to investigate this matter. Generally, geophysical techniques which are used to estimate seismic velocities in the subsurface focus on the low strain levels that are not large enough to induce significant nonlinear, nonelastic stress-strain behavior (Luna and Jadi, 2000), which is normally evaluated when addressing liquefaction potential of soils in the shallow subsurface. Soil parameters relevant to seismic ground response (Rechtien, 1996) are density, relative density and void ratio, permeability, shear modulus, water saturation, soil fabric and stress history. Detailed characterization of elastic properties near a major construction site (e.g. a bridge) is useful for near field dynamic analysis of soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects. The coupled effect of the bridge foundation (piles, piers or abutments) and the soil immediately surrounding these substructure elements is essential for dynamic SSI analysis of these critical bridge structures. This paper presents a geophysical investigation performed along the under construction highway of Egnatia Odos, approximately 13 km west from the town of Xanthi in N. Greece. Twelve geotechnical boreholes, drilled at the maximum depth of 75 m, approximately located 20 m from the Nestos River. The objective of the survey was to obtain the high-resolution compressional and shear wave velocities of the shallow subsurface for computation of elastic engineering properties of the unconsolidated material interposed between the investigated boreholes. Joint interpretation of borehole logs and velocity images obtained by P- and S-wave traveltime inversions outlined shallow geological anomalies.

I gratefully acknowledge the help of a number of American and Canadian geologists, in both federal surveys and in private firms, who took the time to discuss this problem with me. Hans Landsberg and Bruce Netschert also followed the study with interest and encouragement. In their 1961 monograph, THE FUTURE SUPPLY OF THE MAJOR METALS, Bruce Netschert and Hans Landsberg noted that identified potential resources (that is, known but submarginal resources) of lead and zinc were much lower relative to reserves (that is, known and supermarginal resources) than was the same ratio for other metals.1/ Put another way, it seemed that for such metals as iron, manganese, copper, and aluminum, slightly more favorable economic conditions or modest advances in technology would greatly increase reserves by permitting the exploitation of vest quantities of leaner or deeper or otherwise less valuable mineral deposits. But for lead and zinc, Netschert and Landsberg concluded that either: "(1) there is relatively little material below present cutoff grades; [or] (2) such material exists, but for some reason there are no data.? 2/ This situation, which they called "the lead-zinc anomaly" has been subsequently discussed by other authors. The purpose of this paper is to carry the discussion further by examining the evidence in favor of (1) and (2) and by advancing a third alternative.

The Highland Valley Copper partnership was formed in July 1986 and was the logical result of a mine with a large ore reserve but no adequate mill, and a mine with a large, modem mill but dwindling ore reserves. The original partners -Cominco and Lornex -were joined in January 1988 by Highmont Mining Co. which contributed a two-line concentrator. During 1988/1989, the Highmont mill was moved 7.5 km to adjoin the Lornex mill, forming what is now called the Highland mill, with a current nominal capacity of 130 000 tonnes per day. The mine is located 220 km northeast of Vancouver, British Columbia and is close to four communities in which personnel make their home: Logan Lake, Merritt, Ashcroft, and Kamloops. The map in Figure 1 2.2 shows the general area. Kamloops is a major service centre and is serviced by two railways, two major roads and a regional airport.

Biology opens a new frontier for the mining industry. With rising environmental concerns, the need to couple conventional chemical and physical technologies with sustainable approaches is pressing. At Allonnia, we harness microbial processes to create innovative and environmentally responsible technologies with broad applications. The native microbial community (microbiome) remains largely unexplored at most mining sites, unlike the geochemical environment. The exploration of complex biological reactions that could transform mining technology is just starting and holds vast possibilities, spanning bio-cementation, carbon sequestration, ore beneficiation, water mitigation, bioleaching, metals recovery, and more. Allonnia has collected samples from mine sites in Australia, Africa, and North America to characterize the microbiome and uncover the genetic potential present in mineral-rich environments. We are evaluating microbial metabolites that selectively solubilize gangue from various ores. In addition, biological reactions hold promise as tailings stabilizers. Our early efforts illustrate exciting prospects for harnessing biology’s potential in mining.

I am indeed honored to be the 1991 recipient of the Daniel C. Jackling Award. To be voted this honor by my peers in the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration and AIME means more to me than I can truly express. Daniel Jackling's position and prominence in the mining industry first came to my attention in the fall of 1949 when I transferred from Wisconsin Institute of Technology, then a three-year school, to the Missouri School of Mines to complete my last year for a bachelor's degree in mining engineering. I played basketball in the Jackling gym and ran track on the Jackling field. I didn't know a lot about Jackling then, except he was an honored graduate of the school and, obviously, supported the school financially. Over the years, Jackling's name kept coming up. He was a man with a reputation for being a doer, a mining leader who was always a step ahead, a mining engineer who knew how to motivate men in the working place, to organize mining systems, to finance and organize corporations. to open up new, low-grade ore bodies for exploitation. If Jackling were alive today, I would expect he would bean excellent candidate to apply practical rock mechanics to his projects. Looking over the list of Jackling Award recipients, I have known many, have met many personally and had a few who were dear friends that affected my own professional life. Ab Shoemaker, '58, and I consulted at the White Pine Copper Co. on mining problems in the 1960s. We arranged for our visits to the mine to coincide so that we could collaborate on our ideas. I would rent an auto and drive for Ab. He said he was the only mining engineer in the country that had a PhD for a chauffeur. James Boyd, '67, was my mentor as regards the White Pine Rock Mechanics Program that we organized in 1963. Only through Boyd's forsight. leadership, dedication and willingness to spend money on research and development did the Practical Rock Mechnics Program at White Pine succeed. He never wavered in his support to that program or to me personally. Tom Howard, '75, was my predecessor in 1970 as Director of Mining Research for the US Bureau of Mines. When I joined the Bureau in August 1970, he had the research centers up and running. Any successes I may have had with the Bureau of Mines were due in great part to Tom's leadership and organization throughout the 1960s. Gene Cameron, '68, was my teacher at the University of Wisconsin and I remember him fondly. He was the one professor who lectured in a manner that made me welcome going to his classes each day, a truly remarkable educator. If you have come today to listen to me talk about instrumentation, rock properties, stress-strain relationships, rock mechanics theory, etc., you will be disappointed. Large volumes of data have been collected by well qualified theoreticians to define stress-strain conditions in mines. Unfortunately, very little of this data has been used by industry due to the lack of initiative and understanding by the researchers to the true problems of implementation in the industry. I hope my remarks will assist future investigators to work through the maze of operational problems so they will experience the satisfaction of seeing their research used. I fully realize that the Jackling Award is given by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration and is primarily offered for accomplishments in hardrock mining. I have found it impossible to separate hardrock and coal mining when I talk about "Applied Rock Mechanics." There is too much overlap and the same mechanics principles are applied to both. For example, coal mine designs have been applied to salt, trona and potash. Also, the original layout and design of White Pine Copper Mine was based on coal mine designs. "These studies address the relationship between mill media sizing and its grinding efficiency. Starting with the results from a review of the literature, the issues of initial media sizing for a new ball milling circuit, and then optimal media sizing for an existing milling operation, were studied. The Functional Performance parameters “Mill Grinding Efficiency” and cumulative “Mill Grinding Rates” from both plant and test-scale equipment were used, and provide valuable new insight into this topic. A plant media sizing diagnostic tool is presented, as are newly developed testing equipment and evaluation methods, and recent case studies. REVIEW OF MEDIA SIZING LITERATURE For a plant metallurgist to answer the question “How can I maximize plant profit by manipulating this grinding circuit variable?” she must know what effect the variable has on grinding circuit efficiency. Despite the significant cost of grinding media and its potential effect on production capacity, the ‘best’ media sizing remains ill-defined for any given ball mill circuit in the industry today. The underlying reasons for this will be discussed. But the importance of this issue drove Metcom and its industrial partners to take on the challenge of how to engineer the ball charge for an existing grinding circuit. In the absence of any proven method, the first step was a review of the literature. Sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., a broad review of the literature was undertaken, producing “The Effect of Media Sizing on Ball Milling Efficiency” (McIvor, 1997). Among hundreds of publications that were reviewed that discuss the topics of media sizing or wear, forty-five were studied in detail. These were grouped into: plant experiences; laboratory and pilot plant investigations; media wear studies; population balance modeling studies; and general papers on ball milling which included the topic of media sizing. The reader is encouraged to refer to that review. The findings remain unchanged, although some relevant papers have been written since (e.g. Staples et al, 1997; Banasi et al, 1999; Orford et al, 2006; LaMarsh, 2015). Many coal seams are associated with soft floor strata and during mine development if coal pillars are not properly designed, floor heave occurs and causes interruption of coal production. In the severe cases, the section or mine is abandoned. One of the methods for controlling floor heave is floor bolting. This paper describes the demonstration of floor bolting methods in a West Virginia coal mine. Three methods were used: (1) vertical full resin bolting, (2) floor truss bolting, and (3) floor truss bolting plus a floor cut at the center of the entry. The design of each method and the experimental results are discussed in detail.

Somerset International has worked to enhance the recovery of sub-20 micron particles in our patented Sub325 Systems by introducing chemicals in the systems prior to the centrifuge. This paper details four cases of such enhancement. Two on the fine coal recovery side at a 325 tph plant in Central PA and Warrior Met Coal 7 plant. Two on the tailings dewatering side at a 1200 tph Southern WV plant and at Warrior Met Coal 7 plant.

Coal was discovered in South Africa in the mid 1830's. The earliest exploitation of modern times was probably in Natal where, in a letter dated 20 August 1842, a Captain Smith mentions that a wagonload of coal brought to Pietermaritzburg, was sold. Until the discovery of diamonds in 1867 and the Witwatersrand gold in 1886, coal mining satisfied a very small domestic demand. By 1889, at least four collieries were operating in the Middelburg-Witbank district, some 120 kilometres East of Johannesburg, and mining had star- ted at Vereeniging, about 50 kilometres to the South of Johannesburg. A map of South Africa is shown in Figure 1 and an enlargement of the main coal mining areas in Figure 2.

The increased use of sensors to facilitate automation has led to an explosion of data. As data sets grow in size, their use becomes more complex. Therefore, there is an incentive for reducing the size of the datasets, as long as this does not compromise information gleaning. With this in mind, this project explored basic aggregation as a viable alternative to amassing large amounts of data. The goal of the project was to determine if one would arrive at different conclusions had they analyzed aggregated data instead of raw data. In a mine, operational data is typically used for tracking process statistics, correlation between factors, autocorrelation and multivariate models (for a factor of choice). Therefore, this project compared results from such analyses when it was conducted with aggregated data (AD) with the results of analyses conducted with raw data (RD). The data consisted of one-minute-apart readings from a semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mill on the horsepower, feed rate (tons per hour), rotations per minute (rpm), noise, recycle (tons per hour), density (% solids) and bearing pressure (psig). This data was aggregated by averaging five and 10 continuous (one-minute) observations. Changes in statistical measures between the two approaches were typically within 5% of each other. Differences in correlation coefficients between RD and AD(s) were also within this range. Autocorrelations present within RD were preserved in AD, as long as the time lags were scaled for the amount of aggregation. Regression and neural network models were also developed for power consumption. The prediction performance of developed models was similar whether one used raw data or aggregated data. Overall, it appeared that aggregating the data based on 5- or 10-minute time spans would not have resulted in conclusions (from simple or complex analyses) being different from using raw data. In other words, whether one had used raw data or aggregated data, the conclusions would have been the same, suggesting that time domain aggregation, a common industry practice, is a good alternative to storing high-density data in this case.

The main objective of this work was to quantitatively investigate exhaust emission levels, as related to maintenance (service) intervals, during the operation of diesel-powered equipment at an underground bauxite mine in Greece. Such emissions depend on a great number of parameters, including the type (technology) and tuning of the engine, the type of work performed as related to the engine workload, suggested maintenance intervals, the altitude, the temperature and the humidity of the atmosphere of the underground mine, the properties of the fuel, the operator's training and experience level. Necessary ventilation quantities were calculated based on exhaust gas concentration measurements, site specific relationships between pollutants and adjusted air quality indices. Diagrams comparing necessary and recommended air flow for several equipment groups featuring two engine types and for different maintenance intervals are presented.

Waste phosphatic clay presents a difficult disposal problem and a significant loss of P2O5. Recent developments make this study on the use of phosphatic clay as a feed material for H3PO4 production worthwhile. (a) New data from Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute (FIPR) suggest that the Bclay^ waste can be effectively treated by improved solid separation coupled with flotation to produce feed material for recovering additional phosphate. (b) The use of BOLI Flowsheet^ provides capability to predict performance of aqueous-based processes for a range of possible operating conditions. Using the new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enabled the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current P2O5 ore deposits. Predictions using OLI Flowsheet were able to identify process conditions that effectively overcome the difficulty of high Mg content of phosphatic clay. Estimated manufacturing cost in the current study lead to valuation of the P2O5 content of the phosphatic clay recovered/utilized at 60 to 70% of that of the phosphate rock feed material currently used. Phosphatic clay should be considered as a valuable material that is currently given zero value. The new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enables the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current phosphate ore deposits by extending the fraction P2O5 of recovered

Borehole (slurry) mining, in which a tool incorporating a water-jet cutter and a downhole slurry pump mines phosphate through a borehole, was field tested in northeastern Florida as part of a Bureau of Mines program to increase the domestic availability of critical minerals. Approximately 1700 tons (1.54x106 kg) of phosphate ore were mined at 40 tph (10.1 kg/s) from a depth of 250 ft (76 m). The borehole was filled with water during mining for roof support and to assist slurry pumping. Underwater cutting was enhanced with an air-shrouded water jet. Mined cavities were backfilled to prevent subsidence after abandonment. Roof subsidence during mining was avoided only when the cavity was filled with water. Environmental monitoring before, during, and after mining included hydrological studies and measurements of water quality. Significant water quality changes occurred only in the zone being mined and were confined to the immediate area of the borehole.

The worldwide production of iron ores was approximately 880 million metric tons in 1975. This level is the result of an annual growth rate of nearly four percent during the period 1967 to the present. The high growth rate was particularly significant in that two relatively severe worldwide recessions occurred in 1971 and 1975. The current upturn in world economic growth will probably allow future annual iron ore production growth rates in excess of the four percent figure, and, in fact, the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) has predicted that a five percent rate should be realized through 1985. The IISI figures would indicate a 1.4 billion metric tons per year output by 1985 or an increase in current production levels of around 500 million metric tons per year (MMTA)1. Even the more conservative four percent growth rate prediction from historical data would provide an 2 increase over current figures of nearly 350 MA by 1985. A large portion of world iron ore production is being provided by large resource-rich countries with relatively new industrial bases. These countries are typified by heavy export of raw materials such as iron ore and ore products and a large capital investment in the facilities to recover these raw materials. Brazil and Australia are typical of such countries and, indeed, their production of iron ore in the period 1967 to 1973 increased at annual rates of 17 to 30 percent, respectively, The continual reassessment of resources in these and other major iron ore exporting countries such as Venezuela and Liberia would indicate chat these high growth rates may continue for some years to come to meet anticipated world demand for raw steel production.

The process of selecting a building site for a major structure is a complex procedure involving the consideration of a multitude of factors. The approximate geographic location for a structure is usually fixed by its intended function, though often there may be several site alternatives. Socio-economic, logistic, marketing and political factors are the primary site determinants. Also critical in site planning, however, are the environmental factors, both natural and man-made. These factors will influence the precise siting location within the limits allowed by the primary determinants and will dictate some of the basic design criteria. This paper discusses environmental factors, principally those which are natural conditions, that must be analyzed for five different groups of structures. The importance of thorough site environmental analysis based upon the principles of applied earth science is described. Significant elements to be considered in an appraisal of the geology, hydrology, seismology and meteorology are outlined.
