The problem of measuring the amount of rock removed during a given time interval is faced by most mining operations. Many methods have been developed with varying degrees of success, dependent upon the mining method and the availability of usable data. The Rosebud Mine has been in production for nearly two years, employing several techniques to estimate monthly production from underground production stopes. The use of three-dimensional solids generated from survey data has greatly improved the reliability and confidence of monthly production reports. The authors will summarize the methodology currently being utilized at Rosebud.

The Norwegian contracting firm A/S Høyer-Ellefsen has for the last 2.5 years carried out substantial pregrouting in a 7600m long tunnel just outside the city of Oslo. This has been done to avoid groundwater lowering and consequent damage to surface structures. A WIRTH TBM is used in combination with a 2 boom Atlas Copco hydraulic jumbo for the drilling of groutholes in front of the machine. The detailed procedure for the drilling and grouting will be discussed, and the results obtained will be presented.

The paper makes a systematic analysis of interaction between backfill and pillar in coal mining. It compares the difference of pillar strength with backfill and without backfill. It is proved that there are the obvious improvements in pillar strength and the decrease in subsidence. It discusses the subsidence effects of different extraction ratio, different backfill ratio, and different elastic modulus ratio in details. The paper analyses the sensitivity by orthogonal test method. At last, author proposes some suggestion to increase pillar strength, to reduce subsidence, and to guide engineering practices.

Unlined water tunnels have often been used as pressure conduits for hydroelectric projects. However, fallouts of rock in such tunnels are not uncommon and in many cases have been attributed to erosion of shears and seams. A case history of such a fallout is described. An appraisal of the conditions pertaining to the fallout led to the conclusion that rapid changes in the water pressure in the tunnel resulting from operating conditions were significant factors in initiating the fallout. Other factors that contributed to the fallout are also described.

The thermal field of a frozen rockmass surrounding an airway is often disturbed due to thermal interaction with mine ventilation air. Outside air entering an underground mine changes the parameters of the physical state of the surrounding medium. The variations in air temperature result in stress redistributions around a tunnel or mine working. This paper examines the influence of fluctuations in air temperature on stress distribution around an airway, and approaches are suggested to minimize the impact of temperature- stress on the stability of mine openings in far northern mines.

The pressure pre-oxidation of refractory gold concentrate from the Golden Mile has been investigated and the conditions of temperature, oxygen pressure and percent sulphide breakdown for maximum gold extraction optimised. Both tellurides and sulphides were oxidised under optimal conditions and deposited in the residue as oxides along with haematite. Under non- optimal conditions, a reactive basic ferric sulphate was formed instead on the unreactive haematite. Maximum gold recovery after cyanidation (tail < 1 ppm) is well in excess of that produced by the present roasting process (tail 3-4 ppm).

It is possible to beneficiate low-grade phosphate ore slimes containing predominantly siliceous gangue by a combined selective flocculation-flotation scheme using commercially available reagents. The presence of clays, in particular, montmorillonite and attapulgite, has a disastrous effect on the efficiency of separation. Suitable remedies to overcome this problem are not yet available. Intensive R&D efforts are required in the areas of the design and synthesis of specific reagents, the effect of particle size, and the design of appropriate process equipment to carry out flocculation and flotation of slimes.

Two major events highlight recent developments in US ore and coal ports: completion of the last series of modern taconite pellet transshipment facilities on the Great Lakes; and modernization and construction of coal ports, particularly on the East and Gulf Coasts. The New Taconite Transportation System To reduce raw material transportation costs, a fleet of new generation high-capacity 304-m (1,000-ft) self-unloading vessels were built to carry iron ore pellets from the Minnesota-Michigan iron ranges to the steel plants on the lower Great Lakes. Existing port facilities had to be modernized, revised, or completely rebuilt to accommodate these large vessels. Some of these were Burlington Northern&apos;s Allouez, WI, loading dock; Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway Co.&apos;s Two Harbors, MN, facility; Republic Steel&apos;s Lorain, OH, facility; and Chessie&apos;s Toledo, OH, dock. Allouez and Two Harbors receive taconite pellets from unit trains and load them onto large vessels either after dumping or via a large stockpile and reclaim system. The Lorain facility receives iron ore pellets from self-unloading vessels&apos; discharge boom conveyor and reloads the pellets into rail cars or small vessels destined to inland steel mills. The Toledo facility receives Armco pellets from vessels, stockpiles them through the winter, and reloads into unit trains destined for Armco&apos;s mills along Chessie&apos;s rail tracks. Burlington Northern&apos;s $75-million Allouez pellet dock, completed in June 1977, was built to receive pellets produced by Hibbing Taconite Co. and National Pellet Plant in Minnesota, stockpile them through the winter when the lakes are frozen, and load them into 304-m (1,000-ft) vessels in the shipping season. As much as 10 Mt (11 million st) of pellets may be stockpiled within the loop track. A 6-km (4-mile) long conveyor system connects the stockpile area and the dock. Thirty-six new concrete silos were built on the dock to house 2 kt (2,000 st) each of pellets before shiploading. The $35.5-million expansion of the Two Harbors transshipment facilities began shiploading in July 1978 after ground breaking in Aug. 1974. Particularly noteworthy is the first application of the Orboom system-a breakthrough in technology for the modernization of the century-old pocket docks on the Great Lakes to accommodate the new generation of super vessels. The pocket-type loading dock has been a standard on the lakes for nearly a hundred years. Bottom-dump rail cars fill the ore pockets on top of a finger pier. Gravity chutes matching standardized ore ship hatch spacings are lowered to fill the holds of a 20.3-kt (20,000-dwt) ship. The construction is simple and the loading swift. In spite of advances in technology elsewhere, most of these docks continue to serve the iron ore and coal trade in the same manner they did in the 19th century. Although performance of the pocket docks on small vessels remains outstanding, the new 304-m (1,000-ft) vessels are beyond the reach of the old docks. After extensive development, the Orboom system (Patent No. 4,065,002) for pocket docks was successfully developed. The heart of the Orboom system is the retractable shuttle loading arm which loads the wide beam vessels. The Orboom shuttles are fed by existing pockets of the dock that, in turn, are charged by a tripper conveyor along the length of the dock. The Two Harbors shiploading system is supported by a 0.9 Mt (1 million st) storage-reclaim network. Unit trains are bottom dumped. Restoration of a wetland which was initially disturbed at the turn­of-the-century will be undertaken to compensate for the temporary loss of wetlands associated with future mining operations. The proposed mitigation area exhibits xeric conditions as a result of past dredging and gravel mining operations which had the effect of lowering the flood plain surface and wasting the fine surface sediments. Together these mining activities resulted in complete alteration of the surface and subsurface water systems. Water which had inundated the soil profile, now flows on the basalt bedrock, surfacing only for a relatively short time during high flow periods. The conventional approach to wetland restoration in this type of area is to remove surface material in an attempt to bring the surface nearer to the underground water. These operations would require the removal and redistribution of large quantities of gravel, cobbles and boulders and the attendant destruction of existing wetland areas. Rather than lowering the surface elevation to the water level, the mitigation plan conceptualized for this project involves forcing the water to the surface by creating subsurface ponds behind four impermeable barriers. The barriers will extend vertically from the bedrock to the surface. Surface berms will be constructed along the length of each groundwater barrier to enhance sediment deposition and encourage the development of wetland vegetation. This is the least expensive and least invasive method of creating a wetland which will remain saturated to the requisite degree and for the amount of time required for classification as a wetland as defined by the 1989 Federal Manual for Identifying and Delineating Jurisdictional Wetlands.

The mid to late 1980s saw a modern day global gold rush that largely focused on the mature mining countries of the United States, Canada and Australia. This gold rush led to a large number of new discoveries in these countries and phenomenal growth rates in annual gold production. For a variety of reasons, however, gold exploration and development activity appears to have peaked in these countries. The drive for mineral investment is, instead, growing in lesser explored countries (LEC). LECs, particularly those of Latin America, are currently enjoying greatly increased attention from North American mining companies. They are becoming major consumers of mineral investment capital and are important markets for exploration and mining skills. Through sole ownership, joint ventures and subsidiary companies, Battle Mountain Gold now operates or controls gold mines in the United States, Chile, Bolivia and Australia. And it has been or is an active participant in gold exploration or development projects in seven other countries, six of which classify as LECs. In selecting new country entries and opportunities for mineral investment, there are several factors to be considered and parties to be satisfied - shareholders, corporate management, financial institutions and host country governments. This article, though, focuses on some of the more practical concerns of the exploration unit as a whole and the exploration geologist in particular. The exploration unit&apos;s "new country" concerns primarily relate to exploration potential, ownership security, quality and availability of data and the ability to operate efficiently. The following material reviews each of these concerns and how they impact the new country entry decision, exploration strategy, chances of success and human experience.

With the dissolution of the former USSR and a welcoming of foreign, minerals expertise by a host of developing countries, a "new," more international, world of minerals is open to the mining industry. However, even in the new frontier, the old laws of nature still apply. For those attendees of the 98th annual Northwest Mining convention, the adage "survival of the fittest" commanded particular attention. Miners, engineers, geologists and other unique species traveled to Spokane in December to learn of adaptations they can make to assure, or at least prolong, their place in the mineral industry&apos;s land of the living. You have heard the tales of the spotted owl and the desert tortoise, but add to this endangered list the North American mining industry. During a session on international investment criteria, D. Silver of Balfour Holdings (Littleton, CO) blamed excessive environmental regulation, 1872 Mining Law revision and the anti-mining-and-business attitude of our government for migrations from and extinctions within the domestic mining population. "We&apos;ve been on a death curve for some time," Silver said, "with a lower birth rate and a higher death rate. In the last four years, we&apos;ve lost 60% of the gold producers in North America, and we&apos;re down to 110 companies. The entire industry has lost about 400 companies and is now down to 2800." Unreasonable regulation founded on emotion rather than scientific fact has been the chief cause of death, according to many of the convention speakers. B.J. Kennedy, president and chief operating officer of FMC Gold (Reno, NV), emphasized, "We have accepted a regulatory environment - but we oppose being strangled to death by unreasonable regulations."

The penetration of sustainability principles in business practices has introduced the necessity for a simultaneous integrated assessment of the corporate economic, environmental and social performances. Continuous technological, political and legal evolutions indicate that Sustainable Development (SD) principles will soon have to be implemented in all sectors of the Greek corporate reality, among them in the Mineral and Mining Industry. However, the ultimate criteria for the evaluation of a company?s performance remain its profitability and its market value. Managers, shareholders, financial intermediaries, all alike, emphasize and base their decisions on the various accounting produced ratios of return (ROA, ROE, ROCE, Residual Value) included, or produced by data found, in the financial statements of the companies. This paper offers evidence that the traditional accounting ratios discourage the implementation of investment plans that aim at improving the environmental performance of companies and therefore can be inadequate and misguiding for SD applications. International studies have consistently traced a positive relationship between the environmental performances of firms and their financial positions. Yet, the fact that investors tend to reward proactive companies by increasing their corporate values is disregarded by the return ratios, which usually set up the basis for management rewards and bonuses. The book value of the firm assets and owners? equity from which such ratios are produced diverges strongly from the real corporate value, defined as the traded amount for the stock of a firm. There is an urgent need for an adjustment of the return ratios so that they can record the positive economic impact of a more sustainable attitude and encourage decision makers towards this direction.

The Fourth International Symposium on Hydrometallurgy was organized to give those in the minerals processing field an opportunity to discuss current topics of interest in the broad field of hydrometallurgy. Held in Salt Lake City, UT Aug. 1-5, 1993, this fourth symposium also paid tribute to Milton E. Wadsworth for his many contributions in this area over the past 40 years. The science of hydrometallurgy has made great strides since the last symposium was held 10 years ago. The use of electrochemical principles and techniques has produced encouraging results. For example, the application of in situ electrode spectroscopy has helped to understand the mechanisms operating in hydrometallurgical processes. Sophisticated computer models have been developed to handle the thermodynamic properties of concentrated electrolytes. However, it is up to the hydrometallurgist to continuing working on bridging the gap between theory and practice. The successful application of solvent extraction-electrowinning (SXEW) is one illustration of the successful transfer of technology. Its widespread use in the United States during the 1980s played a significant role in the revival of the domestic copper industry. Currently, electrowon copper accounts for about 30% of total US production. Impressive developments in precious metals recovery have also occurred. Since the last symposium, carbon-in-pulp (CIP) and heap leaching have become widely used in gold recovery. And recovery of refractory precious metals ores and concentrates by pres¬sure oxidation and bio-oxidation have made significant advances. In all these examples, hydrometallurgy has played a significant role in the recovery of minerals and metals from primary sources. In addition, considerable attention has been focused on the treatment and recovery of values from secondary sources.

Cyprus Gold NZ Ltd will be recovering residual free cyanide in barren gold pulp by air stripping. Laboratory investigations by DSIR have indicated additional advantages by recovering the cyanide from pregnant pulp. These are a lower leach pH, a greater cyanide recovery and less carbon consumption. They have a net economic advantage of $1.20/tonne over recovery from barren pulp. The realisation of these advantages is dependent on three crucial technical aspects -optimum pH for dissolution, the absolute loss of cyanide and the stability of the aurocyanide ion. The laboratory investigations described herein address these aspects. Earlier work had indicated that the rate of dissolution of freely revolving gold discs at constant cyanide ion concentration increased with decreasing pH from 11 to 8. Attempts to repeat the work in a more controlled manner by measuring the corrosion potential and current density have, to date, not been reproducible, but do not contradict the earlier observations. Cyanide recoveries and balances were obtained on leaches at pH 10.5 and 9 at the same cyanide ion concentration -the lower pH requiring three times as much total cyanide. Unaccounted-for losses, unfortunately, exceed the accounted-for losses, making interpretation of the balances difficult. Nevertheless, it appears that the additional amount of cyanide at the lower pH of 9 may not be fully recoverable. It may not, however, prove necessary in practice to use more cyanide at a lower pH. Both the gold and silver cyanide complexes remain available for carbon adsorption, as do mercury, copper and iron. Zinc, and probably cadmium, nickel and lead, may precipitate during stripping, which is an environmental advantage.

Gold was first discovered in the central region of French Guiana in the mid 1860's. Production was based strictly from placer mining of the various rivers in the region. At the moment, a number of companies are actively engaged in hard rock gold exploration, concentrated in the northern and central regions of the country. The Franc-Or/BRGM joint venture in the Sophie-Repentir region of Central French Guiana offers an exceptional opportu­nity for the discovery of one or more million-plus ounce deposits of gold owing to a highly favorable structural setting in Precam­brian greenstones that host several known vein gold occurrences, some of which appear to occur near the border of a potassic granitoid intrusion. At this point in time, based mostly on predecessors' work, mineable reserves could be estimated to be in the 500,000 ounces range over the length of the property. The exploration campaign under way has the objective to delineate probable reserves of at least 2 million ounces that could be mined by open pit mining methods in the area. The program should be completed in the next 18-24 months. In order to efficiently and effectively evaluate this very large property area, all of the necessary camp, mechanical and drilling equipment has been purchased and is being transported to the property. Most of that equipment was purchased in Canada. The first drill target is the Repentir sector because of its access and the amount of detailed work that has been done by BRGM on that concession, but geological evidence suggests that many areas on the property could offer even more potential.

The dynamic behavior of batch mill, CSTR mill, and a closed grinding network consisting of a mill, sump, and cyclone was analyzed using the dynamic population balance model (PBM). The dynamic solution of the PBM of a batch, CSTR and a closed grinding network consisting of a mill, sump, and cyclone forms the basis of the dynamic analysis presented here. Two numerical dynamic solution approaches were used. These are: 1) providing additional constraints on breakage selection functions or 2) performing the Arbiter-Bhrany (or other) normalization of the selection functions. Actual experimental anthracite batch grinding data was used to obtain the functionality of the batch dynamic mill selection and breakage functions for a real physical system. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained non-linear equations is used to solve the batch dynamic PBM grinding equations to obtain the grinding selection and breakage rate functions. The mill, sump and hydrocyclone were modeled as a CSTR operating at various retention times. Batch dynamic PBM data was used to provide the mill kinetic and breakage selection function data. Different dynamic solutions were obtained depending on the numerical approach used. Each solution approach to a dynamic PBM with transport, while giving the same prediction for a single batch grinding time, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition for other grinding times. This fact makes dynamic nodal analysis and control problematic. The fact that the constraint solution approach gives a solution may suggest that normalization for closed networks is not necessary. Differences in solutions to the PBM cannot be excused away by inaccuracies in the data used to model the grinding phenomenon.

The Anderson Dam Tunnel Project is a high-priority, urgent project under construction by the Santa Clara Valley Water District in California. The project will provide a new low-level outlet for the Anderson Reservoir enabling the seismic retrofit of the Anderson Dam as mandated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. This paper describes planning for construction of the tunnel through the dam’s right abutment crossing several faults in challenging and variable soft and hard ground conditions. The construction methods include SEM, hard rock drill and blast techniques, and a mechanized 8-foot (2.5 m) diameter microtunneled lake tap.

Floc properties such as density, size, size distribution, porosity and shear strength govern the effectiveness of flocculation as a process for solid-liquid separation. Floc characteristics desired for removal of suspended solids by sedimentation or filtration, for example, are known to be different. In this study, an attempt has been made to evaluate floc density using a simplified procedure and determine the effects of various physical and chemical factors on the density of floes obtained. A brief discussion of techniques employed to measure the shear strength of flocs and the effect of various parameters on the floc strength is also presented.

The waste phosphogypsum produced by Paradeep Phosphate Limited (PPL) at Paradeep (Cuttack, Orissa, India) consists primarily of calcium sulfate with small amounts of phosphoric acid, calcium fluoride and other harmful components. Presently these are dumped as waste. In this work, laboratory trials have been made to utilize the calcium sulfate present in the phosphogypsum to prepare usable products like ammonium sulfate, calcium carbonate and magnesium sulfate.
