Mining economics courses have been taught in Europe for more than two centuries and in the United States for most of this century. They are the mineral industry's version of engineering economics offered by industrial engineering departments. In the 1930s, mineral economics first appeared in American mining schools. This subject goes beyond the deposit and the mine. It examines the economic aspects of mineral resources in general and the individual mineral industries in particular. In 1947, the first degrees in mineral economics were granted in the United States. There are mining and geological engineers who specialize in mining economics. But it has rarely become a separate degree program. Rather, in this country and several others, a graduate student in a mining department or school will include economics in his course work. Then the person writes a thesis or dissertation on a mining economics topic. One exception is found in Moscow at the Department of Geoeconomics of the Moscow Geological and Prospecting Institute (MGPI). To place this program in perspective, some background is needed on education in the Soviet Union.

In the paper presented by F.W. Brackebusch on the “Basics of paste backfill systems,” paste fill was presented as a backfill process that offers many advantages over other alternatives such as hydraulic fill and rockfill. It was observed, however, that the mechanics of paste-fill transportation in pipelines is not fully understood and that the success of its implementation in practice depends on the precise control of the proportions of fines, aggregates and water in the mixture. The author emphasized the necessity for laboratory and full-scale testing to determine the suitability of a material to be used as paste fill. Although experimental testing is definitely an important operation in the design of a reliable paste fill, advances in the understanding of the fundamental laws that govern paste flow in pipelines are equally relevant. Ideally, the results of such efforts would provide predictive models for the rheology of the paste and the corresponding pumping-energy requirements. In an attempt to achieve this objective, an ongoing research program has been active at McGill University’s Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering.

In this paper, the compressive strengths, failure modes and acoustic emission behaviors of cubic coal specimens containing bedding planes at various inclinations are considered. Test results showed that the compressive strengths and the modes of failure of coal specimens depend on the inclination of the bedding planes. From the acoustic emission (AE) measurements, the count rate detected through a low-pass window (AE (L)) was compared with that through a high-pass window (AE (H)) in each test. The results of accumulated AE history were compared with AE signatures of others. It is shown that the AE signature of coal depends on the inclination of the bedding planes, and the AE signatures can be classified into three groups. Each group corresponds to a particular mode of failure, namely, slip on the bedding planes, fracture across the bedding planes and fracture extension through the bedding planes. The parameter r, defined as the ratio of AE (L)/ [AE (L) + AE (H)], is plotted against the stress for each test. Test results showed that r also depends upon the inclination of the bedding planes.

Mine plans typically consider the profits and costs associated with extracting and processing minerals into marketable products. Interrelationships between mine and mill costs are often overlooked during the process of mine plan optimization. A simple and quick method for predicting milling costs for a given block would improve the planning process, especially if the procedure could be incorporated as part of routine ore grade analysis of drill core or cuttings. Incorporating milling costs as part of the mine planning process could improve overall optimization of the mine/mill combination. A method developed by the Utah Comminution Center (UCC) at the University of Utah provides a possible answer to the need for quick and reliable grinding cost estimation (King et al., 1996). Using results from single-particle impact tests, a work index, called the Utah Load Cell Work Index (ULCWI), is calculated. The potential for routine use of the new method is explored by comparing ULCWI values with corresponding Bond Work Index (BWI) values for eight mineral materials (Free, 2000).

The Minera Ojos Del Salado (MINOSAL) concentrator is located 20 km (12 miles) southeast of Copiapo, Chile. It processes copper ore provided by its Santos and Resguardo mines at a capacity of 4.2 kt/d (4620 stpd). In 1982, Phelps Dodge acquired the majority interest in MINOSAL to explore the property's potential. At that time, the concentrator plant was a small, antiquated installation with a capacity of 674 t/d (740 stpd). At the time of the pur¬chase, the majority of the ore was produced from the Santos and Resguardo mines, but custom ores of copper, silver and gold were also treated. The acquisition occurred at a crucial time in the copper business, since the price had fallen to nearly 50 cents/ lb. In 1985, Phelps Dodge purchased the outstanding interest in MINOSAL and acquired 100% of the property. Today, after numerous improvements and two expansions, the concentrator is a combination of old and new equipment. The regrind mills, for example, have been in service for about 50 years, while the ceramic concentrate filter represents the latest technology.

Advancements in tunneling technology and underground construction, plus rapidly rising costs of land, and a higher priority being placed on urban esthetics, make tunnels a more attractive option for certain portions of the highway construction program. Recent emphasis placed on fuel conservation reinforces the need for tunnels as a means of shortcutting circuitous routings designed to avoid potentially undesirable environmental impacts on any given area. Larger and more complex tunnels which have been constructed in recent years attest to this greater interest. More than 100 major highway tunnels are in operation in the United States. Highway tunnels commonly have much higher initial cost compared to surface routes. Where extensive cut and cover is involved, temporary disruption of the surface area may prove costly. In exchange for these costs, certain environmental advantages result. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the environmental advantages of highway tunnels and some of the unsolved problems related to obtaining maximum use of highway tunnels and research underway to help solve these problems.

Introduction The art of ripping has been around since the Romans built the Appian Way, but only in the last decade has ripping emerged as a close competitor with drilling and blasting in breaking up heavy rock formations. That is not to say ripping is as effective in every case, or even applicable in all cases, but it does provide a cost efficient option in many situations-if the optimum ripping techniques are used. Originally designed only to loosen hard pan, the ripper has evolved into a powerful tool, its capability increasing as the weight and horsepower of tractors increased. The tractor-mounted ripper extended the range of ripping because of the additional weight it brought to bear on the ripper tooth. Tandem ripping added the weight and power of a second tractor, extending the rippability range even further. Of course, the use of ripping depends on the type of material to be ripped. Not all rock can be ripped. Determination of rippability-an art in itself-is often inconclusive but there are certain universal principles that can be considered in the first step toward optimizing ripping techniques. Each of the three basic rock types, igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic, exhibits characteristics that bear on rippability. Igneous rocks are the most difficult to rip because they lack the stratification and cleavage planes essential to ripping hard rock. Sedimentary rocks are generally the most easily ripped since they are built of layers differing in material, texture, color, and thickness. Metamorphic rocks vary in rippability with degree of lamination or cleavage caused by transformation from pre-existing rock. The condition of rock also affects its rippability. Although sedimentary rocks offer the best opportunity to rip and igneous and metamorphic the least, decomposed granite and other weathered igneous and metamorphic rock often can be ripped economically. Little or no trouble is encountered with hardpan, clays, shales, or cemented gravel. Likewise, highly stratified or laminated rocks offer good possibilities for ripping. However, thicklybedded rock formations generally must be drilled and blasted. The physical characteristics that favor ripping may be summarized as follows: • Fractures, faults, and planes of weakness of any kind; • Weathering, resulting from temperature and moisture changes; • Brittleness and crystalline nature; • High degree of stratification or lamination; • Large grain size; • Moisture permeated clay, shale, and rock formations; and • Low compressive strength. Ripper Types A second fundamental to optimal ripping is choosing the right equipment for a particular job. There are three types of rippers-the hinge, the parallelogram, and the adjustable parallelogram. In the hinge ripper the linkage carrying the beam and shank pivots on a fixed point at the rear of the tractor. The resulting arc from up and down movement causes up to 30° differential in the tip-ground angle. Thus, the tooth angle changes as it enters and proceeds to ripping depth. The parallelogram ripper's linkage maintains the same tip-ground angle regardless of tooth depth. This type of ripper has advantages over the hinge-type when ripping above maximum depth, but does not provide the aggressive tooth angle necessary for hard-to-penetrate materials. The adjustable parallelogram combines the benefits of both the hinge and the parallelogram rippers. It has the additional benefit of being able to vary the tip angle to the optimum angle of penetration. It can also be adjusted while moving, for the optimum ripping angle in any material. Several other factors that are important in selecting the right ripping equipment are down pressure available at the tip of the ripper, tractor flywheel horsepower, and the tractor's gross weight. Down pressure at the tip determines whether ripper penetration can be obtained and maintained. Flywheel horsepower rating determines whether the tractor has the power to advance the tip. The tractor's gross weight determines whether the tractor will have sufficient- to use the horsepower. The best ripping procedure depends on the job's actual conditions. While conditions, vary, it is still possible to apply certain proven techniques to a typical ripping situation. Caterpillar Tractor Co.'s Handbook on Ripping says optimum ripping efficiency can be realized if-before actual ripping begins-these questions and answers are considered.

The federal standard for limiting exposures to miners from radon daughters was reduced from 12 working level months (WLM) per year to 4 WLM per year in 1971. However, even at that time some researchers were concerned that the new limit would eventually be shown to result in an excess risk for lung cancer mortality in miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is now engaged in a comprehensive review of this topic. As the lead agency in this project, NIOSH has developed a work plan and established a work group to implement this plan. The procedure and specific considerations are outlined in the work plan for developing a comprehensive ionizing radiation standard recommendation for all miners, underground and surface. Such a recommendation will not only include estimates of health risks at various levels of exposure, but also appropriate recommendations for medical monitoring, sampling and analytical methods, sampling strategies, posting, engineering controls, personal protective equipment and recordkeeping. The work group has twenty-four members. Eleven members are NIOSH personnel representing six divisions of the Institute. The remaining thirteen members represent other federal agencies, specifically the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior, the Mine Safety and Health Administration and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the Department of Labor, the Office of Radiation Protection of the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Bureau of Radiological Health of the Food and Drug Administration, Department of Health and Human Services. Several factors contributed to the decision to initiate this project. First, the efficacy of the current standard was considered. An initial study group was formed in the spring of 1980 by NIOSH to identify and evaluate articles that contained information on lung cancer mortality risks at and below the present permissible exposure limit. The conclusion drawn from their evaluation was that a two-fold excess risk of lung cancer mortality at and below 120 cumulative working level months (CWLM) of exposure to radon daughters is evident. This composite indication from selected studies was of sufficient magnitude to justify further evaluation. The study group, however, recognized that other studies and information must also be considered in a quantitative risk assessment which would form the basis for recommending an acceptable and feasible permissible exposure limit. A second factor in the decision to pursue further evaluation was the gaps in the current standard that had previously been identified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). These included lack of medical monitoring of underground miners and absence of regulations for surface miners. The seriousness of the health hazard relative to other hazards in mining was also considered. Along with exposures to silica and asbestos fibers, radiation was judged to be one of the major health hazards in mining, These combined factors constituted the justification to develop criteria and recommendations for improved mandatory health standards. The development process begins with a survey and review of the available world-wide information on the topic, including data and information developed by NIOSH. The end product of this review is to be a document that will contain an evaluation of the collected information and support for any recommendations that are made. To develop this document, the present work group has been divided into five task groups with the following emphases: Health Effects, Medical Aspects, Monitoring, Environmental Exposures, and Engineering Controls and Work Practices. The Health Effects task group is to evaluate the evidence from epidemiologic and animal studies of adverse health effects associated with all forms of ionizing radiation encountered in mining and milling operations. The "weight-of-evidence" of the results of all relevant and useful studies will be summarized, with the reasons for emphasizing the cited studies. The critical cells or tissues and the factors that should be considered in estimating the dose to these areas from various types of radiation will be identified. An evaluation will be made of the possible impacts of smoking and exposure to diesel exhaust on the determination of health effects related to radiation. The implications of biologically redundant dose in terms of the time between tumor initiation and death will also be analyzed. The Medical Aspects task group is to review the generally-accepted and the state-of-the-art medical technology for the detection of adverse health effects from ionizing radiation exposure. An evaluation will be made of the accuracy of urine and fecal analysis, wholebody counting, chromosome analysis and nose blows, as well as their usefulness for early detection of adverse health effects. Early detection is of little utility to the affected individual unless subsequent medical care can improve the prognosis. Recommendations for screening tests will be made after carefully considering the accuracy of the diagnostic procedures and the usefulness of early detection. Required recordkeeping and transfer rights will also be addressed. The Monitoring task group is to consider the state-of-the-art technology for the monitoring of occupational radiation exposures. Instrumentation, sampling strategies and analytical procedures will be reviewed for both personal and area sampling. The implications of the associated levels of confidence for non-compliance decisions will be evaluated. The discussion will also include an evaluation of the feasibility of replacing present monitoring systems with recent technology and the impact that a possible lower permissible exposure limit would have on monitoring requirements. The Environmental Exposure task group is to investigate the field procedures and mathematical methodologies which have been used to quantitate exposure levels to the various kinds of ionizing radiation. The magnitude and direction of the possible biases in past exposure assessments will be estimated. Specific attention will be given to the controversies concerning the quantification of the biological dose equivalent and the feasibility of recommending standards for mixed radiation exposures which use "rem" as the unit of measurement. "INTRODUCTION Mechanized underground mines often suffer from noise overexposure. Noise levels are usually above the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) where underground fans are used. Sound levels in active workings can reach 121 dB(A), especially when fans are not equipped with silencers. Use of silencers seldom ensure PEL for various reasons. Overexposure of noise induces permanent hearing loss among mine workers. Recent field studies by a NIOSH-funded research project at six coal and non-coal mines revalidated the findings. The University of Utah has undertaken laboratory studies to reduce fan noise at the source. A new silencer prototype with varying noise dampening material has been designed and tested. The silencer and an associated extension which can be repacked with different dampening materials were used in various configurations. Attempts were made to simulate field conditions where installations are quick and not perfect. The test results are presented here. NOISE IN UNDERGROUND MINES Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a chronic problem in the mining industry. In spite of regulations being in place and elaborate hearing protection programs under way, hearing loss is prevalent among the mine workers (Bise, 2001). All production and support machinery in mining generate loud noise often beyond the approved exposure level. Researchers in the U.S. have identified auxiliary fans as one of the major sources of noise that can create noise exposure levels up to 121 dB(A), which is one of the highest in the mining operation (Bauer, 2006). Studies have demonstrated substantial reduction of noise level by using silencers. Adequate fan selection and proper utilization of silencers in auxiliary fans have great potential of abating the problem. In hard rock mines, auxiliary fans are used in blower configuration to ventilate development headings and large production stopes, and also to ventilate underground shops, crushers, conveyor transfer points, etc. Typical duct diameters in hard rock mines vary from 0.91 m to 1.21 m. Silencers are often omitted for cost reduction. In coal mines auxiliary fans are used in exhaust configuration with rigid ducts 0.61- 0.76 m in diameter (Hagood, 1982 and Moreby, 2009) to ventilate working faces in gate-roads and main entry developments. Sometimes, stone dusters are added at the discharge end to dust the roof, ribs and floor. AUXILIARY FANS AND SILENCERS Auxiliary fans are relatively smaller in size than the main fans and often have high rotational speeds (1800 -3000 rpm). Fans are selected based on pressure-quantity requirements and space restrictions only. Noise emissions are rarely considered during the selection stage. Installation of fans, ducts and other accessories is mainly based on best practices, which often do not include noise control. As a result, the operation of an auxiliary or local ventilation system normally produces excessive noise."

My recent experience has been with wet tropical environments, which address a different set of concerns than Nevada, for example. Spraying rather than drips are required in most cases just to assist the water balance requirement, and my comments address those situations. Most tropical operations are faced with both extremely wet and very dry seasons, with some having multiple cycles during the year. A heap leach operation must address the rate of solution building up within the ponds and how long the volume must last until the next rainy season. It may be easier to construct sufficient pond volume to permit yearlong operation than by discharging excess solution now, and searching for water later. Pond capacity requirements can help with the following: Consider using the solution that could be locked up in the pads during leaching to assist water balance problems. Spray excess solution continuously onto spent ore that would not be normally be sprayed again to "soak up" the excess solution, and stop spraying when the water balance is low, allowing the solution in the spent ore to return back into the system-with or without cyanide added. In a multiple lift system, if intermediate HDPE liners are planned for solution grade control, have drips placed before the HPDE liner is in place. The drips can distribute excess precipitation throughout the lower lifts to control the water balance, while the most current lifts are being leached and sent directly for the preg pond. With only 2 million tonnes (2.2 million tons) of spent ore involved, up to 200,000 cubic meters (53 million gallons) of solution could be moved into or out of the water balance system, if proper methods are designed and installed. That is equivalent to one meter (40 inches) precipitation falling on a 200,000 square meter (2.2 million square feet) pad area. You may even get a little bit more gold recovered as the solution drains from the earlier pads, as well.

Gold is commonly associated with copper minerals, particu­larly in the more geologically recent rocks of Northern Australia, Chile and the Pacific Rim. Traditionally, oxidised copper-gold ores are selectively mined and processed for gold by cyanidation, ensuring that levels of reactive copper in the ore are kept low to minimise cyanide consumption; whilst sulphide copper-gold ores are floated and gold is ultimately recovered as the by-product from copper smelting and refining (La Brooy, 1992). Very few process­ing options exist for treating copper ores which cannot be selec­tively mined or floated, and for treating floation tailings which often contain significant gold (Muir et.al.,1989). The ammonia-cyanide leach system stands out as a unique method of selectively extracting gold without copper using economic levels of cyanide (1-2 kg/t NaCN) and ammonia (1-5 kg/t). Although first patented in 1904, it proved difficult to control and predict per formance with different ores. However, recent research and development in Western Australia by Ruane (1991), Hayes and Corrans (1992), La Brooy et.al.(1991), Muir et.al.(1993), Muir and La Brooy (1993), has led to an under­standing of the mechanism, and the commercialisation of the process at the Paris Dump (W.A.), Akjoujt (Mauritania), and in the Eastern Transvaal (Laxen,1994). Efforts are now underway to pilot and develop a tailings treatment plant at Telfer following successful laboratory trials. To date, process optimisation has relied on trial and error and large numbers of tests covering a range of conditions. Thus the results are specific to the ore. At Murdoch University, process optimisation is now focused on measuring and control­ ling Eh, pH, NH3 [Cu(II)], and Cu-CN species at the optimum levels identified from the recent mechanistic studies. In this way, the optimum composition required to process any ore should be readily established and maintained.

Introduction Very little attention normally is given by the experts, or the public at large, to the fact that the majority of the oil that has been or will be discovered within the U.S. remains in the ground. The inherent limitations of oil production through surface wells, either by primary or secondary techniques, will result in a total of over 300 billion bbl of oil left in the ground after completing production by standard petroleum techniques in currently producing or producible fields. This reserve represents some two-thirds of the original quantity of oil discovered in place. Recent work by a number of groups has shown that there is strong economic justification for extracting this remaining oil by mining and processing techniques. Table 1, taken from 1977 API reports, demonstrates the oil left in place at the end of the conventional petroleum production cycle in then-known fields within th’e U.S. Possible targets for oil mining operations include (1) oil remaining in place in fields and pools that have reached economic depletion by current petroleum production methods and that are not amenable to economic recovery by conventional petroleum industry techniques; (2) oilor bitumen-saturated rocks not normally considered by the industry to constitute producible reservoirs, such as shales and diatomites; and (3) asphalt- and bitumen-impregnated rocks. Economically Depleted Fields A more detailed examination of the depleted fields shows that estimates of oil remaining in place after primary, secondary, and nondestructive tertiary recovery can vary widely. There is significant evidence, however, that more than half the estimated original oil in place (OOIP) remains in the reservoir after all petroleum extraction techniques have been applied. If one compares the sum of past oil production and estimated remaining producible reserves with the API estimate of total discovered OOIP as of 1975, it becomes apparent that for the U.S. as a whole, 67070of the 00IP will remain in place at the end of the

Aiming at characteristics of the soft coal roadway engineering geology and deformation, the exposure research of the soft coal seam, theoretical analysis, numerical calculation and program design were carried out. First of all, according to the disclosure, soft coal seam engineering characteristics and geological conditions in Xinxing coal mine were expounded. Meanwhile, the soft coal roadway bolt supporting axial effect, the bolt supporting transverse effect, the anchorage body mechanics strengthening mechanism and problems such as supporting strength have been analyzed. The paper pointed out that the soft coal with very small cohesive force can form a composite anchorage body under the combined action of the anchor cable group, the W-type steel band and the metal net. The soft coal body in the plastic damage area formed anchorage balance arch with a certain bearing capacity and adapted to the rock deformation, and which played an effective support role in the roof outside the balance arch of the roadway. Therefore, the full-cable support technology was proposed. And then, numerical calculation and comparative analysis were conducted on three schemes of the roadway with non-support, with combined support of “anchor bolt and cable” and the full-cable support. The results show that when the roof is supported by anchor cable, it not only controls the continued increase of the subsidence value of the roof, but also effectively suppresses the convergence amount of the floor heave value and the amount on the sidewalls of the roadway. Whether it is from the stress distribution situation, or the viewpoint of plastic zone scope, the combined support of full-cable is more reasonable than that with non-support and that with the combined support of “anchor bolt and cable”. Finally, based on the features of soft coal seam in No.2265 work face of Xinxing coal mine, the relevant support schemes were put forward, and its specific support parameters and cross-section designs were drawn as well.

In a future world of 8.5 billion people in 2035, the Energy Information Administration's (EIA) projected 50% increase in energy consumption will require true "all of the above" energy resource use from oil, gas, renewables, nuclear, and coal. In particular, coal will continue to be the world's energy cornerstone, providing more incremental energy over that same time period than any other single fuel. Coal has long been a centerpiece of a low-cost, high-reliability electricity grid. Today there are 1.3 billion people across the globe without access to electricity and 2.7 billion people who do not have clean cooking facilities. The problem is spread across the developing world, but it is particularly severe in sub-Saharan Africa and developing Asia, which together account for 95% of people in energy poverty. Without a commitment to achieve universal energy access it has been estimated that by 2030, there will be an additional 1.5 million premature deaths per year caused by household pollution from burning wood and dung and through a lack of access to clean water, basic sanitation and healthcare. Modern energy sources are essential to meeting these challenges.

The Castle Mountain Mine (CMM) is located in the eastern por­tion of San Bernardino County, Southern California, 70 miles south of Las Vegas. The CMM is a joint venture between Viceroy Gold Corp. (75% and operator) and MK Gold (25%). The CMM initially started gold production with an 8,000 tpd cyanide heap leach operation in February, 1992 when the first ore was crushed and delivered to the leach pads. Even during construction and commissioning, design work was under way to engineer and construct a 1,200 tpd Mill circuit to process the higher grade fraction of the ore through use of pulp agglomera­tion. The need for a grinding circuit became evident with the quantity of high grade material delineated during drilling and the amount of visible gold that the geologists were finding in the drill core and R.C. cuttings. Viceroy did not want to stack the higher grade ore on the heap, and it was clear that permitting a tailings pond would, at best, be a long drawn-out affair. An alternative to a tailings facility had to be found.

The benefits of computer simulation in the design of a refracto­ry gold autoclave facility is discussed. Three computer simula­tion programs used for autoclave design are briefly described in this paper. 1) METS IM® - A Process Simulation Software Package Developed by Proware: Mass and energy balances are conducted around the auto­clave and its ancillary processes. Results from the process simulation define process equipment requirements and are used for establishing operating costs. The p_rocess model integrates various unit operations including grinding, acidu­lation, pressure oxidation, counter-current-decantation, neutralization, cyanide leaching, and carbon-in-pulp or car­bon-in-leach. 2) ALGOR® - Finite Element Analysis (FEA): A computer software program is used in the design and analysis of brick lined pressure vessels, such as autoclave, heater, and flash vessels. This software creates a steady state thermal model, and accurately predicts temperature distribution throughout the entire vessel, including nozzles, which represent regions of high thermal intensity. 3) Compress©: A software package developed by Codeware used for the sizing of pressure vessel components, includ­ing shells, heads and nozzles, according to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 1.

Nitric acid has long been known as an effective oxidant. Nitric acid leaching is characterised by highly favourable kinetics. Process development was impeded due to the corrosive nature of the process, limited knowledge of acid recycle and complex reactions which are still not fully understood. In 1981, Arseno Processing Ltd (APL), began development of the so-called Arseno process. The technology targeted nitric acid oxidation of refractory gold ores and concentrates whose refractoriness was due to the presence of sulphide minerals. APL lodged patents in United States, Australia, Canada and several other countries covering the basic chemistry, the overall process, and reactor design. The name Arseno led to the misunderstanding that the process was only applicable to arsenic-bearing material. The name was therefore changed to the Redox process in 1988. Having played an important role in the development of Redox from 1986, SASOX recognised the great potential of the process and purchased the process in 1990. SASOX owns all the patents and other Redox proprietary know-how, licensing agreements in force, and is committed to the ongoing development and commercialisation of the Redox technology. Minproc has been granted specific marketing and engineering rights to the Redox pro_cess.

Future ore reserves of major gold producers in North America and elsewhere will consist of refractory gold ores. About 60 % of the current U.S. gold production is mined in Nevada. Several of the large gold operations in this state indicate that 40 to 90 % of their future ore feeds will contain refractory gold. To compound problems, average head grades for refractory U.S. gold ores have fallen from 8 - 9 g/mt to about 4 g/mt by 1991. In Latin America, 52 % of the gold operations will require milling for optimal recovery. Deeper reserves are, like in North America, refractory. Particularly in hard, (semi)refractory sulfide ores, many operations may experience substantial decreases of gold recov­ery. For example, Martins et al. (1991) report that at an Austra­lian mine, sulfide ore treatment led to 4 - 10 % lower gold reco­veries as the work index increased from 8 kWh/t to 14 kWh/t and the grind coarsened. Many refractory ores should actually be classified as semirefractory since a fine sulfide fracturing and liberation would make 80 - 90 % of the gold cyanide leachable. However, conventional comminution is often prohibitively expensive for these ore types.

Low world gold prices stimulate development and introduction of economically efficient ( cost saving) technology for operating gold mills. This report covers the results of testing and introduction of CIL technology to recover gold from flotation concentrate of Samarta gold concentration plant located in Buryatia (Russia). This plant is treated the ore of Zun Kholba gold deposit using gravity and flotation of gravity tails as preconcentration processes. Till recently high grade gold gravity concentrate was smelted to gold bullion and shipped to gold refinery, gravity middlings were leached by cyanidation in cone type equipment developed by Irgiredmet and flotation concentrate shipped to copper smelter. The disadvantages of flotation concentrate shipping to copper smelter are following: high concentrate transport cost; problem with gold shipped balance; high cost of flotation concentrate treatment; comparatively low gold recovery. In this connection IRGIREDMET developed the hydrometalurgical technology for gold recovery from flotation concentrate. The flowsheet was developed on the base of laboratory, pilot plant and industrial scale tests conducted by IRGIREDMET in 1987-1997 and lrgiredmet experience on CIP process testing and industrial scale introduction in Yakutia [1-6].
