Introduction The use of diesel engines as an alternate power source in US underground coal mines has been a controversial step towards more efficent mining practices. Three areas of potential benefit are foreseen. First, diesel-powered mining equipment is believed to be more efficient, resulting in less occupational risk for any given amount of production. Second, diesels are believed to pose fewer intrinsic hazards, especially those related to fires and ignition of combustibles. Finally, several other health and safety advantages are foreseen for diesel units. Each of these issues will be discussed separately. Diesel Efficiency Proponents of the use of underground diesel-powered mining equipment point to increased production efficiency due to greater maneuverability, speed, power, and payload (Bradbury, 1973; Jorgensen, 1982; Ogden, 1978; Wenberg, 1979; Olsen, 1980). Units most suitable for diesel power include LHD vehicles, shuttle cars, personnel carriers, and maintenance vehicles. Estimates of increased efficiency vary from 60%-300% and more (Wenberg, 1979). Increased diesel mining efficiency is usually viewed as making it practical to mine lower grade seams. Diesel units can also operate over a wider range of floor pitches and distances than electrically-powered units, thus allowing mining of seams with special mining problems (Olsen, 1980). Diesel application is not a universal substitute for electrical power. For example, continuous miners are unlikely diesel candidates. Reduced Intrinsic Hazards Proponents of diesel use have pointed to the increased safety potential due to a reduction in electrocutions, arcs, burns, underground cable fires, and methane ignition (Ogden, 1978). Diesel units are frequently employed in maintenance activities for lifting and moving, and for coal cleanup. Thus the case is made that diesel use, by making powered operations more conveniently available, reduces the incidence of lower back injuries and related causes for days lost due to disability (Olsen, 1980). Several other issues relating to diesel safety have also been suggested. Diesel units can continue operation even during power outages allowing, for example, personnel evacuation. The maneuverability of diesel units make them particularly attractive in difficult physical conditions, such as long haulage from the face to the belt and in areas where water is deep. The case for diesel use focuses heavily on the potential for a "per worker" reduction in accidents, or a reduction in the severity of accidents. Since accidents are a major part of the health impact of mining, a reduction in accidents and resulting injuries would make a major contribution to the health of coal miners. Opposition to Diesel Use Opposition to the use of underground diesel mining equipment in the US seems to have started with the United Mine Workers of America. Some opposition to US diesel use has been based on a widely publicized 1976 letter from NIOSH to Mine Enforcement and Safety Administration administrator Robert Barrett (NIOSH, 1982). In essence, this letter warned that while insufficient evidence existed as to diesel effects on underground coal miners, NIOSH had concerns based on prior knowledge of separate diesel exhaust constituents and the potential for interaction between these constituents and coal mine dust. Current opposition to underground diesel use has focused on respiratory health effects related to diesel emissions, particularly nitrogen dioxide (NO,), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate content (Barrett, 1982). INTRODUCTION A population of several thousand uranium miners in the Colorado Plateau region of the United States has been under surveillance since 1957 using sputum cytology and other procedures. Attempts were made to collect sputum samples annually for those miners showing normal sputum or only minor abnormalities, and on a semi-annual schedule for miners having more severe cytological abnormalities. For individuals having carcinoma in situ or malignant cells in their sputum, samples were taken more frequently. As in any human population, however, these schedules were not always adhered to, and samples were often acquired less often than scheduled. On the basis of the thousands of sputum readings that have resulted from this surveillance, one can calculate the durations or sojourn times which individuals spend in the various cytologic states into which the sputum readings are classified. This paper presents some preliminary, descriptive results concerning relationships among the cytologic state duration distributions in this population, and their associations with other variables such as radiation exposure and cigarette smoking. There are several reasons for studying cytology results in this observational setting. Of considerable interest is the opportunity to gain insight into the preclinical natural history of lung cancer. Such information would be valuable in the future design and interpretation of screening programs for the early detection and treatment of lung cancer, should this activity prove to be of benefit in experimental trials. Secondly, it is of interest to determine if some characteristic of sputum cytology readings can be utilized to determine a decision point at which to transfer a uranium miner to another job category within the industry in order to effectively reduce his probability of developing lung cancer. For example, a reading of moderately atypical cells in the sputum has been suggested as a possible decision event which would be sufficient to warrant such a transfer. In the analysis which follows, an attempt will be made to develop information relevant to these issues. The data base for our analysis, largely developed over a period of more than 20 years by Drs. Geno Saccomanno and Victor Archer, contains sputum readings classified into one of eight cytologic states: normal, metaplasia, mild atypia, moderate atypia, marked atypia, suggestive, suggestive-equivocal, and malignant. The two suggestive states will not be considered as these categories seldom contain enough observations to generate meaningful results. The duration in a given cytologic state for a given individual is calculated as the sum of the intervals between consecutive sputum readings in that state. When two consecutive readings are in two different states, half the between-readings interval is assigned to each of the two states. Among all individuals in the data base, only those having at least two sputum readings are used so that a duration can be calculated. Furthermore, the analysis is limited to individuals whose successive readings are no more than 24 months apart, so as to focus on a population which was under surveillance on a reasonably regular basis. RESULTS The overall distributions for the cytologic states are displayed as histograms in Figures 1-3.

Arizona Portland Cement Company's limestone deposit (called Twin Peaks) is approximately 4 miles southeast of the cement plant. The pant is adjacent to both the Southern Pacific Railroad and Interstate 10, about 17 miles northwest of Tucson. Placer claims were filed on the Twin Peaks deposits in 1923. From that time until the present, geologic data have been accumulated and evaluated to define more closely the quantity and quality of the limestones. The cement plant at Rillito was originally constructed as a one-kiln plant in 1949. Capacity was increased in 1952 and 1956, bringing the plant to an annual capacity of 44,000 tons of cement. In 1972 anther expansion program was completed, bringing annual cement capacity to 1.1 million tons. Geologically, the Twin Peaks contain formations ranging from the Precambrian Pinal Schist to the Pennsylvanian Naco Formation. Within this sequence, other exposed formations include the Cambrian Bolsa Quartzite and Abrigo Formation, Devonian Martin Limestone, Mississippian Escabrosa Limestone, and Pennsylvanian Naco Formation. Generally, the Escabrosa, Naco, and Martin Formation are the primary sources of limestone for manufacturing cement. The Martin Formation is basically a dolomite with bands of limestone, quartzite, and siltstone. These limestones are blended with outside source materials (clay and iron ore) to make a raw mix that will make specification cements. Several drilling programs were initiated between June 1946 and March 1982. Information derived from these programs provided the means to develop cross sections, geologic blocks, and grade blocks. The configurations of the geologic and grade blocks are the same. Block boundaries delineate the various formations on any particular level. Cursory inspection of the structure would indicate a broad syncline elevated on the west side. A more detailed examination shows that the structure has been complicated by several periods of faulting and intrusion of igneous rocks.

Gold and Resource Developments NL (GRD) operates the Macraes Gold Project in East Otago in the South Island of New Zealand, treating a carbonaceous, refractory sulphidic gold ore. The ore is concentrated by flotation, then reground, followed by CIL cyanidation, to minimise loss to the preg-robbing natural carbonaceous material. As the mine has progressed there has been some variation in the preg-robbing nature of the ore, with average overall gold recovery generally in the range 70- 75 %. The Macraes Gold Project has been operating since 1990 and still has an estimated 11 year mine life, which has stimulated the continuing drive to enhance gold recovery. Testwork in 1994 showed there was no improvement in CIL gold recovery after conventional acid pressure oxidation of Macraes Gold Project flotation concentrate. Hence roasting was initially considered as the preferred option to improve gold recovery, being the only established technology to deal with both carbonaceous preg-robbing and sulphide encapsulation. However Newmont Gold Company pressure oxidation technology, as used at Twin Creeks in Nevada, has proved to be applicable to the Macraes Gold Project concentrate. Pilot scale testwork has shown that both roasting and pressure oxidation could achieve similar CIL gold recoveries on the concentrate. However, capital cost, simpler arsenic stabilisation, the ability to operate autothermally at a lower concentrate sulphur grade and simpler environmental consenting factors, has tipped the balance in favour of pressure oxidation. Overall average gold recovery is expected to improve to approximately 84% with adoption of pressure oxidation. GRD has appointed Minproc Limited as EPCM contractor to install pressure oxidation at the Macraes Gold Project, together with upgrading the existing flotation and grind circuits at a cost of NZ$ 30M (US$ 16M). Construction is 60% complete and on schedule for 1 October 1999 start up.

Test work and plant operation confirmed that semiautogenous (SAG) milling is a viable option for Inco's milling rationalization project at Sudbury only if pebble crushing is included. Throughput increases more than 50% with pebble crushing incorporated into the comminution process. The finer product of high-speed pebble crushing provides further energy savings. The unconventional approach of pumping the pebble crusher product, while simplifying plant layout, has produced challenging wear problems. Inco Ltd.'s Sudbury operations are located in northeastern Ontario, Canada, about 400 km (250 miles) north of Toronto. Inco has 11 operating mines around the rim of the Sudbury basin. The mines currently produce about 11 Mt/a (12 million stpy) of ore. This ore contains pentlandite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite in mafic host rocks. The milling facilities are designed to produce 108.8 kt/a (240 million lbs/ year) of nickel as concentrate. This concentrate is further processed through Inco's smelting and refining facilities to produce nickel, copper and several other metals. Before 1991, -200 mm (-8 in.) ore was shipped to two primary mills. The Clarabelle mill had a design capacity of 29 kt/d (32,000 stpd). Frood-Stobie had a capacity of 16.3 kt/d (18,000 stpd). The flowsheets of these mills were similar. Two stages of open-circuit crushing were followed by rod milling and closed-circuit ball milling. The product from the comminution circuit, at 12% +250 mm (+65 mesh), was first passed through magnetic separators to recover magnetic pyrrhotite. It was then sent through a four-stage flotation process. The first two stages produced a high-grade copper-nickel concentrate. The final two scavenger stages produced a low-grade copper-nickel concentrate containing nonmagnetic pyrrhotite.

INTRODUCTION Coal is forecast to be an increasingly important and economical source of energy for the future as the supply of oil and gas declines relative to overall energy demand and perhaps in absolute quantities produced. With the decline in productivity, especially in underground mining, in the early seventies coinciding with the need to produce greater quantities of coal for market, a gradual change from room-and-pillar mining to longwall mining has been taking place in the United States. Consolidation Coal Company (Consul) produces about 50 million tons of coal per year with approximately 66% being from underground mines. Most of the mines are located in the Appalachian Region in the States of Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia, and in Ohio and Illinois. Coal is produced by the room-and-pillar mining method with continuous mining machines in addition to an increasing number of longwall mining faces. Continuous mining machines will continue to be used for driving longwall development entries as well as in areas where partial extraction must be practiced in order to support the overburden rock because of surface structures or in areas that cannot be subsided, or where unfavorable geologic conditions limit the application of the longwall mining methods. ROOM-AND-PILLAR MINING METHOD Some background in the room-and-pillar mining method may be helpful to provide perspective. This method has been widely practiced since the beginning of coal mining in the region. It is a flexible system because it can provide either partial or nearly complete extraction, and coal pillars can be left where needed to support surface structures or oil or gas wells or because of unfavorable geologic conditions (Choi, Dahl and McCain, 1980).

While surety capacity for the mining industry continues to shrink, States are demanding greater financial certainty for closure/post closure obligations. To combat these demands, larger mining companies are pursuing a Mining Surety Reinsurance Program that requires a significant up front capital contribution. This paper outlines an alter-native program for middle market mining organizations. The program utilizes a “Blended Finite Risk” environmental insurance solution with surety acting as the “front” in states where insurance is not an acceptable form of collateral. Marsh proposes creating separate programs for each State requiring surety. The reason for separate programs stems from each states’ different surety rules. Insurance companies typically require at least $5 million in future value remediation liabilities for finite risk programs. Since most middle market mining companies have obligations that fall below this threshold, the Blended Finite Risk Program contemplates combining several companies closure/post closure liabilities to accomplish the minimum amount required by the insurance company. Why use a Blended Finite Risk Program? One of the primary benefits is the financial assurance that funds will be available for planned remediation. For example, the financial assurance may be required by a government agency. The certainty may help facilitate a merger or acquisition. Additionally, the funds may be part of a CER-CLA PRP settlement. In all cases, the insurer providing coverage would be a secure independent 3rd party. A Blended Finite Risk Program also provides a long-term solution – up to 30 years and in some select cases longer. The benefit to a state or the BLM is the removal of financial uncertainty. An insurance company writing the policy would have an AA or AAA balance sheet. The hardening of surety markets coupled with the tightening of financial assurance requirements in many states have necessitated the posting of 100% collateral. This program substantially reduces these collateral requirements.

According to relatively recent estimates by the US Geological Survey and the US Bureau of Mines, there are more than 0.9 Tt (one trillion tons) of remaining identified coal resources in the seven major western US coal-producing states and about 200 Gt (220 billion tons) in the demonstrated reserve base. Considering coal's current national production level of 0.7 Gt/a (0.8 billion tpy), these US reserve and resource figures are reassuring. Given here is a preliminary analysis of geologic constraints and an estimate of their effects on mining and recoverability of western coal. Mining Constraints USGS and USBM coal figures incorporate only thickness and depth, and are "blind" to many other major geologic constraints on mining and recoverability. The most important of these geologic constraints include: • coal seams too thin or too thick for conventional mining methods; • coal seams that cannot be mined due to insufficient separation from underlying or overlying previously-mined beds; • unstable or otherwise unfavorable roof strata; • soft or heaving floor strata; • coal seams that are too lenticular or discontinuous for conventional mining methods; • coal seams in intensely faulted areas; • coal seams having high angles of dip precluding the use of conventional coal mining methods; • coal seams that cannot be mined due to proximity of water-bearing strata; and • coal quality problems such as excessive ash, sulfur, chlorine, or sodium. Coal Thickness Present USGS-USBM classification for reserve base includes bituminous coal beds more than 0.7 m (28 in.) thick and subbituminous beds more than 5 m (60 in.) thick to depths of 305 m (1,000 ft). Both of these thicknesses are less than the thicknesses now considered mineable in the western US. The lower limit for bituminous steam coal in deep mines is about 1.5 m (5 ft). For subbituminous coal, a thickness of at least 2.4 m (8 ft) is generally required. Accordingly, the Bureau of Mines reserve base includes many thinner coal seams that will not be mined in the foreseeable future. Within the Powder River Basin of Wyoming and Montana many seams-Wall, Upper Pawnee, Lower Pawnee, Cache, Manning-range in thickness from 7.6 m (25 ft) to more than 30 m (100 ft) and occur at depths to 305 m (1,000 ft). These have been included in the Bureau of Mines reserve base. However, the mining technology required to mine these thick seams does not now exist. It will require many years for development. The ultimate recoverability from these thick seams is unknown, but could be as low as 25%.

INTRODUCTION The role of comminution and related unit operations in mineral processing applications is of major importance. This is especially true in terms of operating costs, since these unit operations represent the major fraction of the overall processing costs. Due to the broad scope and the large number of unit processes and machines involved, Section 3 is divided into five subsections. In Section 3A, General Aspects of Comminution, topics covered include history, terminology, particle¬size distributions, classes of comminution machines, testing and calcu¬lation procedures, and simulation and modeling. In Section 3B, Crush¬ing. the subjects include jaw crushers, gyratory crushers, cone crushers, hammermills, and impactors. The chapters of Section 3C, Grinding, cover aspects common to tumbling mills, ball mills, rod mills, autogenous mills, pebble mills, roller mills, fluid energy mills, other types of grinding machines, and grinding costs. Section 3D, Classification, coverage includes classification theory, hydrocyclones, and mechanical classifiers, and in Section 3E, Screening, the topics presented are classes of screens, selection of vibrating screens, sieve bend screens, and screening media. About five years after the Handbook was begun, Section 3 was unfortunately without an editor or contributors for over half of the chapters. A committee was then organized to expedite completion of the section. When this committee contacted the persons who had agreed to contribute to the section, it was found that many of them wished to resign from their earlier voluntary obligation to AIME. Therefore the committee had to find new contributors for these chap¬ters in addition to other chapters in Section 3. Since there had been no previous effort to locate contributors for Air Classification, Dust Collection, and Washing and Scrubbing, it was agreed to delete these subsections. In Section 3, equipment availability, capacity, and performance data from various manufacturers and users are provided for engineer¬ing use. Selected data from existing installations are also included. The machines that are being used in comminution, classification, and screening are described in detail, and drawings, photographs, and diagrams are presented to supplement the descriptive material. The editors thank and acknowledge the generous effort of the many contributors, some of whom were called upon five or more years after the Handbook was started. It is regretted that Fred C. Bond, who was a member of the committee formed to complete this section, was deceased before the section was finished. During the time that he worked with the committee, he contributed a great deal as an author and councilor.

Introduction Since its creation in 1910, the Bureau of Mines has conducted a wide-ranging program of research on mining technology. Over the years, the Bureau has perhaps become best known for its accomplishments in mine health and safety technology, a field that has been the object of much public attention. Nevertheless, the Bureau's program in other areas of mining technology has always been strong and remains so today. A distinguishing feature of the current effort is its tendency to concentrate on high-risk, high-gain projects. Throughout the federal research establishment, the Administration's policy has been to phase out short-term research that could be performed by private industry, in favor of long-terms projects that industry cannot usually afford to fund. This tendency is evident in the following account of the highlights of the Bureau's current mining technology research program. Underground Mining Technology Fragmentation. Research studies on fragmentation have focused on nonexplosive concepts. If successfully developed, these concepts would lend themselves to continuous automated operation and reduce time and costs of fragmentation in underground mines. A special laboratory-scale device to investigate ripper cutting was designed and fabricated in 1982. Experiments were conducted with large drag cutters to develop an efficient cutting technique for hard rock. Tests were successfully conducted with 76- and 152-mm (3¬and 6-in.) bits in rocks up to 138-MPa (20,000-psi) compressive strength. Because of the success of these initial tests, larger-scale proof-of-concept tests are planned. To prepare for these tests, a tester capable of cutting a 1.8-m (6-ft) opening was fabricated. This device will allow ripper cutting to be carried out at full scale, and will also allow mucking and holddown requirements to be investigated. Preliminary estimates indicate that this concept has the potential to double excavation rates while reducing costs up to 30%. Mobile Hydraulic Monitor. A mobile hydraulic monitor system was designed, fabricated, and used to mine the St. Peter sandstone at an average rate of 22 t/h (25 stph) from a face in Martin-Marietta's foundry sand mine at Clayton, IA. A slurry transport system worked in tandem with jet cutting, resulting in a continuous mining and transport system. Problems with spray from the jet hitting the sandstone showed that a remote-controlled mobile monitor was needed at a station 15 m (50 ft) from the face, so the operator would have a clear view of the face and be safely out of the backwash. Crushers. Research on crushing systems to improve efficiency in underground mines is continuing. Final testing of a low-profile, portable crusher for underground applications has begun. A system for handling oversize feed to the crusher was conceived and tested. Underground crushing systems, portable enough to be kept near the face, offer considerable improvement in materials handling because main haulage by conveyor is often less costly. Hoists. Research to increase hoisting efficiency and speed and to reduce energy requirements has led to experimental ore skips. The skips feature guide rollers to improve riding characteristics, bearing improvement at critical locations, and weight savings of about 1.8 t (2 st). An experimental aluminum skip was installed last year at Kerr McGee's Church Rock mine. Performance is being monitored under production conditions. A portable service hoist for low-cost, efficient movement of men and supplies in raises between mine levels was designed, fabricated, and tested on the surface. Introduction The Sierra Nevada Foothill Gold Belt in California extends from Mariposa north for more than 420 km (200 miles). It includes the Grass Valley and Alleghany districts in the zone of Northern Mines and the famous Mother Lode to the south. The gold belt has produced more than 3.1 kt (100 million oz) of gold since its discovery in 1848. This remarkable production, at the present gold price, would be valued at more than $40 billion. The Law of Gambler's Ruin supposes that averages are based on systematic rather than random variations. It emphasizes the vast differences between finite and infinite probability. By applying this Law to this figure, it can be seen that the belt has produced an average of 15.5 t (500,000 oz) of gold per running mile. Many geologists believe, with some justification, that less than half the gold in this belt has been mined. Sixty per cent of the past production has come from lode deposits, the balance from Tertiary and Recent placer gravels. This paper will concern itself with the developing lode mines along the Sierra Nevada Foothill Gold Belt. As a further and final note regarding placer mining along this belt, Mark Twain suggested that placer miners, having lost their senses, had contributed liberally to the population of California's insane asylums. After a 40-year lull with little or no gold production, the lode mines of this famous belt are showing signs of renewed activity. Two open pit mines, the Sonora (Jamestown) and Carson Hill, are now in operation at substantial scales. Two others, the Goldenbell (Pine Tree-Josephine) and the Royal-Mountain King, are being readied for production on equally impressive scales. All are in the southern part of the Mother Lode. Exploration farther north, at Sutter Creek, Drytown, and Georgetown, is showing encouraging results in developing deeper lode deposits. This new activity has been sponsored to a large extent by junior Canadian mining and exploration companies. Most of the established American mining companies have looked the other way, not participating in this important development. One major reason for domestic disinterest in this opportunity is there is little chance for heap leachable open pit ore in this belt, excluding Carson Hill. And heap leaching has become fashionable with American mining companies today. Also, this great old gold belt must have been worked out, for why else is there so little activity here - Catch 22 logic. Another reason is that if a new deposit of size and grade similar to the mines in the past was found, high costs would preclude a profitable operation. And, finally, California environmentalists would not permit mining, even if a rich deposit were found. These may all be pefectly valid reasons not to explore for gold along this belt. But a look at the history of gold mining in California may suggest that the future for exploration and development of the gold resources in the Sierra Nevada Foothills can be greater than the past. It was during the Depression of the 1930s that this gold belt saw its maximum activity, with more than 3000 mines in operation. Some were father and son operations producing only a few tons of ore a day. Other mines employed hundreds of miners to hoist more than 900 t/d (1000 stpd). Some ores were of marginal grade. In operations that use the sublevel stoping mining method, production scheduling takes into account factors — including ore reserve envelopes, ore grade averages, equipment capacity, feed controls to the mill, and geotechnical restrictions — across the scheduling horizon. Mathematical programming is one of the most effective methods for enhancing the decision-making process in regard to the most viable production schedule in light of a given set of limitations. The majority of research on sublevel stope mining focuses primarily on a single objective of optimization, which is to maximize the net present value (NPV). Environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations are becoming more prevalent in the mining industry. This includes aspects relating to deforestation, land disturbances, gas emissions, community relations and water usage, among many others. Institutional and other kinds of investors are becoming more interested in the work that resource companies do regarding their ESG obligations. This review article identifies the gap in the existing literature and proposes to simultaneously optimize the production schedule around three objectives. Two of these relate directly to ESG aspects

However, other gold adsorbents (namely, ton-exchange resms) are being introduced to the industry as they are considered to have several advantages over carbon for the recoery of gold. A set of test methods have been developed by the industry to evaluate the quality of different carbons. owever, many ?f these tests are not applicable to evaluating ton-exchange resms. Hence, a need has arisen for a method to evaluate the different adsorbents. This paper introduces a philosophy to evaluate an adsorbent that results in an estimation of the capital cost and the operating cost associated with the adsorbent. Tests that have been devel­ oped to evaluate the ability of an adsorbent to adsorb gold (in­solutton . counter-current) and to evaluate the optimum adsorbent for a specific pulp (in-pulp batch) are introduced. A method of converting the test data into an economic dimension is present­ed. Case studies are presented to highlight the discussion.

In the Gold-Cyanide Process (GCP) the cyanide anions act to solubilize the gold and silver present in the ore, and mercury as well. The resulting mercury and cyanide rich effluent are serious health and environmental problems. Currently, there is no mercury treatment from the ore leach solution since there are no precipitating agents or other technologies which can be used effectively in the pH ~ 10solutions. Recently, however, we have developed a new chelate ligand that is impervious to this level of pH and it can be used to precipitate Hg from NaCN solutions. On an actual sample taken from an active gold mine the chelate selectively reduced the mercury level from 34.5 ppm to 0.008 ppm within 15 minutes. Importantly, the gold and silver levels remained unchanged throughout this process. Thus, the environmental impact of Hg released in the GCP can be drastically reduced. Moreover, with a mercury treatment technology now available it may be possible to change, or reinvent, the entire GCP process.

Ammonia and nitrate in metallurgical operations arise from several sources: (1) the use of ammonium nitrate based explosives, e.g. ANFO; (2) the use of cyanide for gold extraction which is degraded to ammonia by most cyanide destruction techniques; and (3) the use of nitrogenous reagents in the mill for neutralisation, flotation and extraction. The concentrations of ammonia and nitrate in effluents vary from 10-50 ppm and 25-300 ppm respectjvely. A number of environmental problems are associated with both ammonia and nitrate. Both of these forms of nitrogen can contribute to the eutrophication of receiving waters. Ammonia and organic nitrogen can also cause high dissolved oxygen demands in receiving waters. Ammonia is also toxic to fish, particularly at elevated pH values. Several methods are in use for the removal of ammonia and nitrate from municipal wastewater, industrial effluents and agricultural runoff. To date, no treatment systems have been developed specifically for the removal of nitrogen from mine and mill effluents. This paper will report on some removal techniques that have been tested using actual and synthetic mine effluents.

Electronic data processing' is becoming a necessary part of all large mining operations. Accountants, geologists, mining engineers, samplers, and truck drivers are needed to operate a mine. So appear to be systems analysts, computer operators, and software engineers. Trucks, loaders, and drills must be used to extract useful material from the ground. So must be mainframe and microcomputers, plotters, digitizers, and computer terminals. The papers presented in this section describe experience gained in Europe, Australia, and North and South America. The mining and data processing environments and the size of the companies vary significantly, but the conclusions drawn are often strikingly similar. Common answers to often-asked questions can be summarized as follows: - Why invest in data processing? The main reason is that information systems can supply accurate and timely information for better decision-making. Other reasons are mentioned including, to speed-up the processing of large volumes of information, to perform operations which cannot be performed manually, or to reduce costs. But all of these reasons appear ancillary to that of supplying accurate and timely information.

Quarrying is an important activity as it significantly contributes to the economy of a country. This activity presupposes the destruction of the natural vegetation, the removal of the surface soil and deposition of inactive materials. The lack of fertile soil in these disturbed areas is usually a problem for the plant cover establishment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of the establishment of ten herbaceous plant species to inactive quarries with the use of limited amount of fertile soil. The research was conducted in the area of the quarries of the cement manufacture company ?TITAN?, Thessaloniki, Greece. On a terrace of one of the quarries, a 2 cm layer of fertile soil was placed. In early October 2007, the herbaceous species, Lolium rigidum, Festuca arundinacea, Bromus inermis, Agropyrum desertorum, Phalaris aquatica, Dactylis glomerata, Medicago sativa, Medicago lupulina, Sanguisorba minor and Phacelia tanacetifolia, were seeded separately. The first results indicated that among the tested species Dactylis glomerata, Festuca arundinacea and Phacelia tanacetifolia had the highest establishment capability.
