Transporting goods from producers to consumers is a fundamental part of the US economy. The demand for transportation closely reflects the economic health and well-being of the nation's industrial, commercial, and agricultural sectors. The inland waterway barge industry has traditionally played a key role in transporting needed commodities to industries on an economical basis. Barges account for 10% of the domestic intercity tonnage carried by all transportation modes. Water carriers operating on inland waterways hauled more than 450 Mt (500 million st) of cargo in 1980-up from 428 Mt (472 million st) in 1970. Inland Waterway Shipments Metallic and nonmetallic minerals comprise one of the largest commodity groups moved on inland waterways. As illustrated in Table 1, metallic and nonmetallic mineral shipments accounted for more than 69 Mt (77 million st), or nearly 15% of all commodities shipped in 1980. Putting this tonnage in perspective, coal and petroleum represent the two largest commodities moved on inland waterways. In 1980, petroleum and petroleum products accounted for 138 Mt (152 million st), or 28% of all commodities shipped. Similarly, coal represented 120 Mt (132 million st), or 25% or all commodities shipped. Even though shipments of metallic and nonmetallic minerals are smaller than coal and petroleum, they still account for a sizeable portion transported. The inland barge industry moves a variety of metallic and nonmetallic minerals ranging from manganese ores to building cement. Minerals transported by barge include: • iron, copper, bauxite, and manganese ores for metal production; • lime and limestone for construction and electric utility scrubbers; • phosphate rock, natural fertilizers, and gypsum for agricultural needs; • sand, gravel and crushed rock, clay, asphalt, tar, and pitches, and building cement for construction purposes; and • a host of other minerals to meet industrial needs. A few mineral commodities are responsible for a large proportion of waterborne mineral shipments.

BHP Australia Coal Pty. Ltd. (BHPAC) manages and, through its parent company BHP, partly owns seven large opencut mines in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland, Australia. In terms of developments in surface mining in Australia, the operations of BHPAC are as representative as any. The seven mines managed by BHPAC produce a combined total of about 40 Mt/a (44 million stpy) of mostly high quality coking coal. They also produce small but increasing amounts of thermal and PCI coal. Virtually all of the coal produced is sold on the export market. In 1993, Australia exported 133 Mt (146 million st) of coal. Salable production was 172 Mt (189 million st) in New South Wales and Queensland and 180 Mt (198 million st) nationwide. Mining systems Surface coal mines in Queensland can be typified as large, long-strike-length, shallow-dipping and sometimes multi-seam dragline operations. There are exceptions. Blair Athol, for instance, works a 30- to 40-m (100- to 130-ft) seam beneath shallow cover but is still a dragline operation. Moura is truly multi-seam and steeper dipping but also is still a dragline operation. Mines in the Ipswich area are small shovel-truck operations.

This paper presents some of the work associated with the reduction of employee exposure to diesel and blasting contaminants at an underground salt mine. The purpose of the paper is to outline the procedures recommended in resolving the problems associated with these contaminants. The first stage consists of a complete mine ventilation survey. The purpose of the survey is to identify any problems in the mine. The survey consists of air quality, air quality and ventilating pressure measurements taken throughout the mine. After completing the survey, the information is analyzed to identify problem areas and the possible causes. All available solutions to reduce the levels of contaminants are then explored and evaluated for feasibility. The PSU Mine Ventilation Simulator is then used to accurately simulate possible changes to the ventilation system. These ventilation projections are a useful tool to illustrate to the company and union personnel the possible benefits of various ventilation changes. This paper will illustrate the phases involved in making important and sometimes expensive ventilation decisions. Through the cooperative efforts of MSHA, company and union personnel, the levels of contaminants have been reduced by approximately 200 percent. As a result of these ventilation improvements, the company can now safely increase production approximately 25 percent.

In the Czech Republic nitrogen was first used for the fight against the mine fire in 1949 (Hajek,1969). In the years 1949¬1996 the consumption of nitrogen in the Ostrava-Karvina Coal Basin /OKB/ reached more than 220 mil. m-3. The main source of nitrogen in the OKB is a central pipeline now. Gas nitrogen is used for the prevention of spontaneous combustion in gobs of longwall faces. The nitrogen infusion technology (Froger,1985), often called "franca technology", has been applied in the Czech coal mines since 1982. The aspects of the nitrogen infusion technol¬ogy can be theoretically solved by the calculation of mixing two gas streams in the filtration space. Longwall faces are parts of the ventilation network of the coal mine. The intake airflow of the longwall face is divided into the airflow passing through the face and a part of air losses passing through the gob. Air leakages through the gob and nitrogen in¬jected into the gob mix there. There is the main problem to solve air leakages in the gob. Usually, the principles of the gob aerody¬namics were used by many authors (Glusberg,1988;Voracek, 1994; Sulkowski,1993; Michailov, 1995; Dziurzynski, 1995; Kolarczyk, 1995; Saghafi, 1995; Sedlaty, 1993) that are applied to our case as well.

In the hierarchy of performing mine planning tasks, production scheduling is naturally at the bottom. Yet good production scheduling is probably the most demanding and difficult task to achieve for various reasons. Being the last task in the mine planning hierarchy, a proper production schedule must not only conform to both the long-range and the short- range mine plans but also satisfy many practical details that are unique to day-to-day operations. For example, the averages which were good enough for both long-range and short- range mine planning are no longer good enough for production scheduling. Instead, the variations become the overriding concern. The answer must also be obtained quickly and on time, thus adding another dimension to the overall problem. Because of these considerations, many production scheduling problems have been begging for solution during the past decade. Many attempts were made to solve the production scheduling problems in the past using computers and the available operations research (OR) techniques, particularly among academic groups. However, it is probably true that, compared with the current full-time computer usage in long-range and short-range mine planning, very little computer usage is being made in production scheduling to date.

The existing Rome-Florence railroad capacity is inadequate for the traffic volume. To increase this capacity and to reduce the traveling time the Italian National Railroad Administration has decided to provide an additional 400% of rail capacity. This new rail line will be known as the Direttissima Roma-Florence line. It is planned to operate the trains on this connection at speeds of 250 km per hr. Table 1 lists the main design characteristics. [TABLE 1. Castiglione Tunnel is a part of the fifth section, 42 km in length, which has been awarded to Consorzio Ferrofir which is a joint venture composed of the construction firms of Astaldi - Di Penta - Lodigiani - Sogene.

Proposals have been made by two organizations, the International Standards Organization (150) and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) for a revised respirable dust criteria and criteria for thoracic and inspirable dust. These criteria yield different results than criteria based on lung deposition patterns in assessing the hazards due to dust exposure. Since these differences are a function of the size distribution of the dust an analysis of dust size distributions from various mining operations was performed to determine the amount of difference that could occur. The dust size distributions available for this analysis were taken from U.S. coal mines and from Chinese metal mines. The mass of mechanically generated dust that will deposit in the alveoli was found to be in direct proportion to the ISO/ACGIH criteria estimates in the mines studied. Therefore, respirable dust estimates for substances such as coal and silica are not a problem. Estimates of exposure to diesel exhaust in these mines, however, were not always in the same proportion to the estimated alveolar deposition. Also, concern with an excess of bronchitis among miners may not be adequately addressed by the use of samplers conforming to the ISO and ACGIH criteria. The cascade impactors used to acquire the data for this analysis require four to eight substrates per sampler. For daily dust exposure assessment this method is cumbersome and time consuming. Therefore, two new samplers have been designed to meet the need for determination of deposited dust mass. These samplers follow the lung deposition curve rather than the penetration curves proposed by the ACGIH and ISO and require analysis of only two substrates per sample.

Unlike previous gold mining booms in Nevada's Great Basin, the current boom includes a serious commitment to mine reclamation. Many of the smaller mines began reclaiming in the late 1980s but met with limited success due in part to poor soil characteristics. Public land managers and the mining industry began looking for ways to improve reclamation success. One promising technique is suggested by an ongoing research project using sludge biosolids, the solid residue of municipal waste water treatment. During the 1980s, limited space in landfills led municipal governments to search for alternate ways to dispose of their biosolids. The cities of Reno and Sparks, NR and the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) searched for ways to combine these needs to everyone's mutual benefit. Yet barriers remained. The federal government had major concerns about potential bioaccumulation of metals and contamination of drinking water from the land application of municipal biosolids. The barriers were lifted late in 1991 when an interagency task force led by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a new federal policy on the use of biosolids on federal land. The policy encouraged biosolids as a soil amendment to reclaim degraded minelands and invited federal agencies to develop biosolid pilot projects. In response, BLM enlisted the help of American Resources Corp. (ARC) and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for a pilot study at ARC'S' Butcher Boy Mine near Wadsworth, NR. Although biosolids have been used in mine land reclamation in the eastern United States for 20 years, before this pilot study, none had been used on public lands in the arid Great Basin. Land application of biosolids improves soil conditions by improving nutrient uptake, increasing water retention, permitting easier root penetration and enhancing soil fertility. Biosolids increase ecosystem productivity and can lead to significant improvements in the structure and diversity of plant and animal communities. Thus, land application of biosolids promotes biodiversity.

The basic geological data, derived from boreholes, exploratory test pits, drivages, and mine development, include information on parameters such as ore thicknesses, grades, depths below surface, structural attitudes of beds, rock types, and lithology of beds overlying and underlying the deposit. These data are usually supplemented by analytical information obtained from more detailed chemical, physical, and structural investigations of the various horizons. Even then, the relatively small number of sample points in the ore body and the sparsity of the sample volume make it necessary that the available information be interpolated between sample points and extrapolated into areas beyond the limits of the sample points. Such interpolation and extrapolation are usually done by making suitable assumptions about the parameter's continuity in the ore body and by building a suitable mathematical model. The mathematical model provides the values for chosen parameters at the nodes of superimposed conceptual grids of any desired dimensions such as a grid cell equal to the size of a mining block or any other criterion. This network of values, for any parameter, can then be used for mine planning, designing, and controlling functions. Additionally, these data can also be used to calculate ore reserve and quality in total and/or for any required block. Figs. 1 and 2 broadly illustrate the scope of work that may be involved in a geological ore-body modeling study for a coal deposit. Figs. 3 through 6 describe the scope of a commercially avail- able computerized system (MEDSYSTEM of MINTEC, Inc.) for creating drill-hole data base, mineral inventories, and for planning coal and uranium projects. The application of MEDSYSTEM to calculate reserves and to long-range planning in steeply pitching coal deposits is described in subsection 3.4, Chapter 4.

Underground coal mining systems have kept pace with developments that have occurred in other types of mining. A diversified group of machines are now available with high horsepower motors, built-in microprocessor technology, and numerous options to satisfy miners' needs in various geological environments. The results will be a greater degree of mechanization and recovery of coal from inclined seams, thins seams, and seams mined in lifts from shallow as well as deeper deposits. This article is based on a general suvey carried out by the authors to detemine the current status of mechaniztion and systems development in underground coal mining. It indicates that the next two decades will see increasing use of longwall mining, which has already reached a high degree of sophistication. Automation, remote control, and robotics are the key words of the future. Data transmission from underground to surface and over long distances will be almost routine. Many components of the high technology industry that are just being considered by the mining industry regarding equipment health and perform¬ance monitoring, quality control, application of expert systems, and computer networking will become a routine part of underground mining technology. Within the next 21 years, "manless" mining, first attempted about 25 years ago, will become a reality. Current coal face developments Developments in underground mining equipment, its application, and associated technology have made phenomenal progress compared to those in other types of mining. Room-and-pillar systems, on one hand, and longwall mining, on the other, have sophisticated equipment at their disposal. Both of these systems have become highly productive, with output per manshift about 50% higher than that achieved a decade ago. Mr. Garrett brings up several interesting points with respect to the proposed API specification for "nontreated bentonite." However, although not explicitly stated, these specifications are being written based strictly on bentonites from the Wyoming/South Dakota area. Other sodium bentonites may be suitable for use as drill mud but will be unacceptable since the specifications are designed for Wyoming bentonites. Regardless of the API's intent that its specifications are intended only as guidelines, they are generally adhered to on an international basis and, for practical purposes, might as well be chiseled in stone. Estes (1986) notes that the quality of bentonite available from Wyoming producers has steadily declined since the early 1960's. The plastic viscosity: yield point (PV:YP) ratio was included in the current API 13A specification primarily to prevent excessive polymer treatment of lower quality bentonite to make drill mud. However, with development of polymers designed to control YP, this specification cannot ensure that only high-quality bentonites are used for drill mud. Nor will the new specifications for untreated bentonites. Other sodium bentonites are available. Bentonite produced in southeast Oregon demonstrates superior performance characteristics without addition of polymer or other chemicals. However, the exceptionally high purity of these deposits leads to a relatively high YP:PV ratio since the naturally high YP probably results from the higher purity and smaller particle size of this bentonite (Rath. 1986 and personal communication). These bentonite; typically have a smectite component exceeding 90% (Rath, 1985), compared with 70% to 75% smectite for typical Wyoming bentonites, as determined by X- ray diffraction and tests for colloid content. As evident from the accompanying table, the untreated Oregon bentonite has excellent rheological properties, though different from Wyoming bentonites due to the high purity. Additionally, this bentonite reacts well with polymers typically used in the oil industry, making it eminently suitable for use in a low-solids mud system. The extremely low grit content, less that 0.5% on a 75 mm (200-mesh) wet sieve, greatly exceeds the standards set for Wyoming bentonite. Optimum rheological properties are obtained at a higher moisture content than Wyoming bentonites. At 10% moisture, API 13A maximum, the clay is overdried, again reflecting the high smectite content. Introduction Gold exploration in the Dominican Republic has not received much publicity. The fact is, however, that a continuous program has been underway for some time. For the past two years, the Restauracion area of the western Dominican Republic, near the Haitian border, has been the scene of mineral exploration by the Dominican Department of Mines geologists, and later by geologists of Rosario Dominicana. The latter is a state-owned gold mining company and operator of the Pueblo Viejo open-pit gold mine. The exploration is for mineral deposits with the goal of finding another Pueblo Viejo-type deposit. Geology Exploration is being carried out in the western central Cordillera, the backbone of the Island of Hispaniola. Geology consists of quartz veins and veinlets and ramifying stringers carrying pyrite, barite, minor amounts of copper, and significant amounts of gold in places. They are associated with regional faulting in a complex of Cretaceous beds of andesites, dacites, argillites, siltstones, and shales. They are intruded by tonalites, diorites, and gabbros. Lesser amounts of zinc-lead mineralization occur in some locations. The showings appear as disseminations along the faults. To date, the work has been mostly geologic mapping - 1 to 50,000 with details on a scale of 1 to 20,000 and 1 to 10,000-stream and soil lithogeochemistry, and geophysics. Trenching and sampling were used to follow possible vein extensions. Particular emphasis has been placed on the Los Candelones district that was taken over by Rosario Dominicana. Here is where drilling has been initiated in the past months. The first hole drilled showed assays of 21 g/t (0.6 oz per st). The second hole intersected an interesting oxidized zone that reminded observers of the original Pueblo Viejo oxidized zone. A third drill hole went deeper than 75 m (246 ft), the depth to which the first two holes had been scheduled. An assay of 50 g/t (1.46 oz per st) was cut during drilling. SCHEME DESIGN London’s Heathrow Airport, as the world’s busiest international airport, is missing one vital aspect - a dedicated rail link which connects directly to the city. All this is about to change with the construction of Heathrow Express - a fast, high quality rail service between the airport and the centre of London. It was recognised in the mid 1980s that if Heathrow was to accommodate the forecast growth in passenger numbers and the resulting increase in road traffic, a dedicated airport rail service would be vital. The main access into the centre of Heathrow is via a road tunnel with a direct link to the M4 motorway. The airport has introduced a number of traffic management schemes, but these can only achieve so much benefit. Growth in air passenger traffic is predicted to continue at an average of 4% per annum well into the next century and it was clear that significant investment was needed. Heathrow Express at a cost of over £350 million will provide this when it starts its service in June 1998. The business case for the scheme is based on a rider ship of around 15% of air passenger traffic. The initial Heathrow Express service will be based on four trains per hour, up to 8 car train lengths, providing a high speed non-stop service between the airport and central London in just 16 minutes. Initially a joint venture between the British Railways Board and Heathrow Airport, by mutual consent of the two parties, Heathrow Airport recently purchased the British Railways Board share making this one of the largest private sector rail projects currently under construction in the UK. Leaving Paddington, the main rail terminus in West London, Heathrow Express trains will travel 12 miles on the newly electrified line to airport junction, north of the airport. At this point they will leave the mainline to enter a 5 mile tunnel section that runs underneath the heart of the airport. The railway companies are responsible for track work, signalling and electrification of the 12 mile main line section including a grade separated junction over the main tracks for the Great Western Railway which links London and South Wales. Automation and mechanization in mining has no value of its own. It has to be measured in economic terms or in Increased safety or in the utilization of deposits which otherwise were unavailable. The mechanization and automation of workphases in the mining and rock construction process has led to the decrease of manual work. This has had a very essential importance in the countries where the labor is expensive or where there has been difficulties in the availability of labor. The work has become much more efficient. We would like to argue that the need of mechanization has been initiated mostly from the above mentioned reasons. The origin has seldom been the "process" approach or the real need or will to change the way mining is done. Through mechanization bigger unit sizes of machines and operations have become possible and better efficiency is achieved. This has led to new problems as well, but in most cases they have been solved so that better and more economic outcome than before has been the end result. The changes have thus been justified. It is perhaps feasible to state already at this stage that we see that the mechanization andautomation steps in the difficult conditions of mining have been remarkable. There is not a slightest underestimation of the achievements and importance of this development in our mind. Where we are to- day is the result of the experience, know-how and technological excellency of all the parties involved. The natural approach to automation has been through mechanization and automation of individual unit operations and machines. This has been the way as well in manufacturing industry as in mining. There may not have been any other way. The other presentations in this session tell us very clearly of the approach .which the machine manufacturers have taken. They have not done it alone but 'most of the initiatives have come from them. A good use of their present achievements gives many possibilities to increase the, efficiency in mining. We would, however, like to extend the view one step further to the future:

Introduction Potential applications that exploit the electrical properties of coal measure rocks include: (1) radar sensing of coal face, floor, and roof for automated mining operations; (2) underground wireless communications; and (3) sensing extent of subsidence, blasting operations, coal gasification bums, and moisture migrations. Impediments to exploitation of electrical properties include: (1) a lack of reliable electrical properties data for in situ conditions and (2) a lack of correlation data between electrical properties and other relevant physical properties. In this paper data are presented for electrical conductivity and permittivity for Appalachian and Illinois shales for a frequency range 2 x 10 to 2 x 10 Hz. These data are useful in establishing in situ electrical property variability, lower limits, and anisotropy. Electrical proper¬ties measurement and values for other coal measure rocks are discussed as well. Laboratory measurement For the frequency range investigated, a capacitance bridge and Q-meter were employed. These instruments are designed to yield bulk values of permittivity and conductivity. Disk samples of thickness 0.396 cm (0.156 in.) and diameter 2.54 cm (1 in.) were machined from cores obtained from the two coal basins. While both the capacitance bridge and the Q-meter must be balanced manually, the bridge has an analog-to-digital interface and an attached computer specifically designed to expedite data collection and interpretation. Sample holders are critical components in the measurement process. A Hartshom-Ward holder was employed with the bridge and a Marconi micrometer jig was used with the Q-meter. Neither commercial sample holder was designed to regulate ambient humidity conditions. Because water adsorbed on sample faces may cause errors approaching 100%, special enclosures were designed for both holders. Each enclosure contains a flush-mounted externally-manipulable carousel, an externally-manipulable rigid arm that can accomodate translational motion and three-dimensional rotation, a compartment for humidity regulating solids or liquids, and a humidity sensor. Each enclosure will accomodate several samples that can be manipulated within the enclosure without opening it. Experience gained during this research demonstrated that humidity regulation was necessary to obtain repeatable results. Grinding and polishing shale to a very thin thickness (about 0.4 mm) was shown to cause changes in electrical properties as well. These latter changes were attributed to alterations in the water content. Theoretical considerations A very comprehensive discussion of the electrical properties of sedimentary rocks is available in literature (Sen and Chew, 1983). These authors reviewed the work of others and proposed modifications to better explain the frequency dependent behavior of the permittivity and conductivity of rocks. A large portion of their article was devoted to explanations of large relative permittivities at low frequencies such as observed in this research. They noted that the electrical properties of formations containing shales and clays are the most difficult to explain. Sen and Chew noted the need for additional experimental data and further refinements in theory. Results Shales, limestones, and sandstones were examined for a single 150-m (492-ft) core from Pennsylvania and for a dark shale from a southern Illinois coal mine. Although trace amounts of Indium are found in many ores, commercial production of the metal has come almost exclusively from residues, flue dusts and slags generated by Zinc recovery operations. Our paper attempts to summarize the various approaches used to recover Indium from these by-products. Some comments on production and price trends are Included as well as our views on future availability.

The last few years have produced new methods of characterizing flow properties of bulk solids. Abrasive wear and particle attrition can now be accurately measured in a laboratory and scaled up to field condi¬tions. In addition, the effect of large par¬ticles on a material's flow properties (cohe¬sive strength, bulk density, wall friction) can be determined as well as the effects of var¬ious additives such as freeze conditioning agents. New developments have occurred with devices to improve the reliability of solids flow. Much attention has been paid to find¬ing ways, by using inserts, to provide a mass flow pattern with relatively shallow hopper walls. Such devices can also provide reli¬able in-bin gravity blending of bulk solids or completely nonsegregated discharge. Other developments have occurred in the area of belt-to-belt transfer chutes and sealing screws. The technology and hardware for running bench scale flow tests on bulk solids samples and transforming the results into reliable designs has been in existence for nearly 30 years (Jenike, 1964; Marinelli and Carson, 1986). It has been shown repeatedly that reliable materials handling systems can be designed to avoid the problems of no-flow due to arching or rat-holing, erratic flow, segregation, loss of capacity, or spontaneous combustion. Running flow properties tests and carefully designing a bulk handling system are not expensive, particularly when compared to downtime costs and continual flow problems. New developments in characterizing flow properties of bulk solids include: • a shear tester for measuring the properties of run-of-mine ores containing large par¬ticles; • attrition testers to simulate a wide range of flow conditions; • a tester to measure the wear rate of liners in bins, feeder parts, etc.; • a dustiness tester to measure the potential for dust and the effect of dust control meas¬ures; and • techniques for measuring the strength of frozen ores and the effect of freeze condi¬tioning agents. In the area of improving the flow of bulk solids, there are new techniques for ensuring reliable flow without using up excessive headroom. These include: • belt-to-belt transfer chutes to handle po¬tentially sticky, abrasive, and dusty ores; • designs for the interface between a bin/ hopper and apron or belt feeders to avoid hangups and minimize feeder loads; methods to feed solids reliably into a pres¬surized process; and designs for handling systems that will mini¬ mize attrition, avoid segregation, or auto¬matically blend materials together. Characterizing flow properties Large shear cell It has long been known that the cohesive strength of a bulk solid is due mainly to its fine fraction. However, the effect of the larger particles (that were assumed to re¬duce the strength) could not be measured. The development of larger scale (205 mm¬diam and 0.6 x 0.9 m or 8 in.-diam and 2 x 3 ft) shear testers has made it possible to measure the properties of a wider range of materials. Now cohesive strength measurements can be made with up to 100 mm (4 in.) particles. The results obtained from the large shear testers, together with the results of the nor¬mal shear tests on the fine fraction, are used in the design of reliable stockpile reclaim systems and crusher feed systems. A high percentage of large particles can reduce the measured shear strength of a bulk solid. The boron review arrived too late to appear in the June issue. The United States was the world's second largest producer and the largest consumer of boron compounds during 1991. According to the US Bureau of Mines, boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the US totaled about 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st), yielding about 608 kt (670,000 st) of BO, in 1991. Total estimated value was $440 million. That level of production was equal to 1990 revised production figures. Value was greater by $37 million, however, reflecting a strengthening of boron product prices. The US continued to supply essentially all its own boron while maintaining a strong position as a source to foreign markets of sodium borate products and boric acid. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products in 1991 remained at 1100 people, about the same level as in 1989. The Bureau of Mines estimated total world production of boron in 1991 - mineral concentrate and chemical - at about 2.9 Mt (3.2 million st). That corresponds to about 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st) of BO ,. World production in 1991 was about equal to revised 1990 levels. US production Mines and processing operations in southern California were the only domestic sources of boron mineral concentrates and chemicals in 1991. US producers, in order of quantity of production, were US Borax and Chemical Corp., North American Chemical Co., and American Borate Co.

It doesn't take any special acumen to note that US engineering and construction firms are busier than ever with mining projects in this mineral conscious world. This special issue of Mining Engineering takes a look at E&C companies-their expanding role, their special capabilities, and their challenges and problems. ME sent a questionnaire to a representative sample of E&C firms. Information was sought about officers, ownership, and amount of business. ME also asked about types of projects and commodities dealt in as well as market distribution and forms of payment. The accomnanying charts show how the 17 responding E&C firms answered these and other questions. Other ME survey questions, and a review of company literature, yielded information about financing techniques and special challenges for E&C firms. Insights were gained concerning government impacts, customer-generated problems, and promising areas for development-including synfuels-in the minerals industry. These areas are discussed later in this article. Accompanying articles in the special issue discuss the E&C company's role in mining projects, research and development in E&C firms, one approach to contract work used by an E&C firm, and an E&C project case study.

Over 600 million tons of coal are handled annually for use by the country's coal-fired power plants. Coal is transported in various ways. overland conveyors. Railcars, trucks, and barges. It can travel short distances or thousands of miles, picking up moisture, freezing, or drying. When the coal is received at the power plant, environmental problems with fugitive dust and further handling problems can arise.
