The Filblast Cyanidation Process incorporates the advantages of intense high shear mixing, high dissolved oxygen concentra­tion and high pressure to achieve extremely rapid gold dissolu­tion rates. This is made possible without suffering from high energy or wear rates by the unique design of the Filblast gas shear reactor. The reactor is a rugged and compact in-line device which can be constructed from a variety of wear and chemical resistant materials. High temperature tolerance is also possible so that the device can be incorporated into a pressure leach circuit with significant capital cost savings because of the high capacity to volume ratio that is an inherent feature of the device. For cyanidation applications the outer casing is protected by a polyurethane coating and the internal parts are of wear resistant polymer. The largest unit built to date has overall dimensions of 1200 mm length by 300 mm diameter and has a capacity of about 150 dry tonnes per hour at 40-45 % solids. Service life at this throughput is at least three months. Six mines are currently employing the Filblast Process and another six are conducting plant trials. The ore types range from highly reactive, almost impossible to treat, pyrrhotite/ arsenopy­rite to deeply weathered clay ore which forms a highly viscous pulp. It has been found that the effect of shear thinning has resulted in improved leaching and adsorption kinetics resulting in higher carbon loading and reduced soluble gold loss. Total tonnage treated is approximately eight million tonnes per annum. This paper presents the operating benefits and cost savings which have been achieved in four plants, two treating oxide/ sulphide ore blends and two treating highly reactive sulphide ore and concentrate. Filblast leasing and maintenance charges and pump operating costs are about ten percent of the benefits. A conceptual cyanidation circuit based on the Filblast Cyanidation Process is also discussed. The Filblast System is an in-line pressure leach aerator/ reactor which generates very high shear and greatly enhances mass transfer rate by generating extremely small gas particles where oxygen gas is required for oxidation reactions and/or utilising the high shear characteristics to minimise the diffusion boundary layer. Both of these rate limiting factors effect the rate mechanism for gold cyanidation. Initially two multi-stage Filblast aerator cartridges formed a leach train but now the trend is to install a single submersible cartridge of equivalent perfor­mance. This design simplifies installation and minimises change-out times. However the in-line concept can be employed where high pressure leaching or pressure oxidation is required. The reactor is submerged in the leach tank so that the mass of gas micro-bubbles contained in the discharging slurry is entrained in the agitator vortex and is thoroughly dispersed throughout the tank. A diagrammatic representation of a leaching circuit incorpo­rating the Filblast Reactor is shown in Figure 1. The recirculation pump takes new feed directly from the cyclone overflow trash screen either under gravity or pump fed and recirculates the balance to maintain 250 - 270 m3/h total slurry flow. All of the leach feed slurry gets at least one pass through the Filblast thereby eliminating short-circuiting. Typically a 6/4 EAH Warman pump drawing 60-70 kW is required to circulate 250 m3/h through the system. The back pressure generated by the Filblast is in the range of 400-500 kPa depending upon pumping rate, pulp density and slurry rheology. The high shearing rate effectively negates the viscous effect of slurries and the addition of a gas further reduces the pulp density by virtue of the intensely aerated, homogeneous medium. The gold leaching Filblast cartridge elements are made of polyurethane but stainless steel, ni-hard, rubber or ceramics can be used depending on the operating temperature and design duty. The efficiency of the Filblast Leach Reactor in gold cyani­dation is due to the extremely efficient mixing, oxygen dissolu­tion and surface polishing action of the Filblast design. Either air or oxygen may be used but Atomaer recommend the use of oxygen because of the rate benefits gained from cyaniding at [02] significantly > 20 ppm D O in the reactor. Very high DO concentrations have been measured; in excess of 50 ppm. There is some debate as to whether the value is a true measure of the DO or the oxygen meter sensor is measuring the effect of a mass of very fine bubbles of free oxygen. Regardless of the fact the reactor has registered some amazing gold dissolution rates commonly in excess of 80 % during transit of the pulp through the reactor. Namibia is one of Africa's newest nations. A German colony until 1915, it then became a South African protectorate until 1990, when it gained independence after an armed struggle that lasted more than two decades. However, no trace of past bitterness can be found today in the capital, Windhoek, or in the countryside. Namibia is now one of the safest parts of Africa. Namibia's industrial base and infrastructure have been untouched by war. Swapo, the ruling party, has embarked on a successful policy of reconciliation and economic development. The GNP per capita is a surprising $1500 (from the World Bank), one of the highest in Africa. Namibia's population stands at 1.3 million, including about 100,000 whites. Namibia is a very sparsely populated country (1.7 inhabitants per km2). About 70% of the people are farmers. Namibia has a surface area of 824,232 km2 (318,261 sq miles), about the size of France and Germany combined. The semi-arid climate and generally flat morphology make the country well suited to mineral exploration. About 40% of the country presents abundant rock outcrops. The rest is buried under the Kalahari sands. However, this cover in most of the country hardly exceeds 200 m (655 ft), and Australian technology has shown that large mineral deposits (Roxby Downs) can nowadays be found at even greater depths. Mining is Namibia's largest industry. In 1991, it accounted for 22% of the country's GDP, about 70% to 80% of its exports by value and 25% of internally generated government revenues. The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) is responsible for formulating and implementing national mineral policies. This agency has recently introduced legislation aimed at encouraging new and long-term investment in the mineral sector. The variety of Namibian mineral resources, both metallic and nonmetallic, is rivaled by few countries worldwide.

The first form of a surety bond was an honest handshake between two or more parties agreeing to a decision, and their personal guarantee of following through to completion. This has all changed. In 1895, the United States Treasury Department disclosed that $35 million worth of personal surety guarantees on file had become worthless. A law was then passed requiring all surety bonds, in favor of the United States, must be corporate surety bonds. Today, a surety bond is one of the nation's leading fi¬nancial instruments used to guarantee the completion of an obligation. One hundred-fifty years before cor¬porate surety bonds, outcrops near Richmond, VA, were being mined. These surface mines became under¬ground mines. Today, both are still being used to obtain a leading energy source, coal. Since that time, more than 5956 km2 (1.47 million acres) of coal mined lands have been reclaimed in the US (Coal News, August, 1987). More than 25,000 state and Federal mining permits cover¬ing 14,164 km2 (3.5 million acres) have been issued during the last 10 years. Coal production has exceeded 7.2 Gt (8 billion st). More than 5665 km2 (1.4 million acres) of mined land has been reclaimed by active coal mining opera¬tions and 267 km2 (66,000 acres) of abandoned mined lands have been re¬claimed by others. Reclamation bonds were freely writ¬ten in the 1970s. So why are they almost extinct today? Contract bond losses have been severe in the past several years, sureties reporting losses exceed¬ing 110%. But the same proof is not provided on coal reclamation bonds. A surety bond is generally required when one party has an agreement with another party, and that party wants a guarantee from a third party that a job will be completed according to the terms and conditions of a written contract. In the case of a reclamation bond, the surety company (surety) is the financial party. It extends the credit and a guarantee to the obligee (the State, Commonwealth, or Office of Surface Mining) that the principal (the coal operator/company) will complete the terms and conditions of the contract (the rules and regulations governing mining and reclamation). The Surety Association of America defines a surety bond as an agreement providing for monetary compensation should there be a failure to perform specified acts within a stated period. Webster's Dictionary defines surety in the following ways: "l: the state of being sure; 2a: a pledge or other formal engagement given for the fulfillment of an undertaking and; 3b: one who has become legally liable for the debt, de¬fault, or failure in duty of another." Banks never make accommodation loans. Either the loan is good or no loan is made. Surety companies feel the same way about surety bonds. In fact, the average person does not realize the dangers of becoming surety for another. How does a surety determine if a company is worthy of receiving surety credit? How is a coal account under¬written today for an obligation that may not be released for many years? When a surety company executes a reclama¬tion bond, it financially puts its name behind the coal company and its guaran¬tee that should the coal miner default on the obligation, the surety will fulfill the contract. How is the surety to determine if a coal company may still be in business five, 10, 20, or 40 years from today?

Introduction Our society is currently experiencing a change in civil philosophy toward US industrialization. We have become increasingly bent on the pursuit of a nirvanic state of zero risk. The money supply has become inversely proportional to its sources. And most mining companies, traditionally conservative, have become increasingly risk conscious. Rising taxes, high inflation, and decades of a steadily decreasing gross national product (GNP) - coincident with moral decay and disarmament - have eroded America's economic health. Psychology of US metal markets has shifted across the economic spectrum to disillusionment and discouragement. The sagging national economy, expanding governmental debt, and a backward mineral policy in concert with worldwide unrest and turmoil have caused great volatility in the metal markets. Congressional inaccessibility of US resources has contributed to its loss in strategic leadership and dependency on foreign suppliers and the common market. Large scale mining activities are now on the decline. And there is an overall slump in mineral exploration in this country. America now faces the sobering reality of almost total importation of 13 key mineral commodities and total dependence on foreign sources for five of them. There is a growing dependency on 21 of the 34 minerals vital to the US economy. And virtually everything needed can be imported directly from third world countries. Almost 85% of the free world's supply or production of vanadium, chromium, platinoids, manganese, and titanium - an essential to the aerospace industry - comes from South Africa. That country now plays a forefront position in supplying the West with minerals. The Soviets have become increasingly aware of this situation. They have made key moves in procuring for their own purposes major raw materials markets, particularly in South Africa. This is obviously threatening to the US' direction and brings about vulnerability to shortages and cutoffs. In spite of these developments and the overall change in the mining industry, there is good opportunity for growth ahead. The way has been paved for the smaller mining companies, particularly the more bullish of these. Smaller mining organizations possess a tight management and strong sense of direction. They can easily adapt to and cope with change. "Windows" that exist in the industry directly depend on a number of factors. These include the busi¬ness climate, market research and planning, management and human resources, applied appropriate technology, favorable hunting ground, and entrepreneurship. Mining as business Mining (and exploration) as a business is by its very nature highly speculative. It involves greater risk for a longer period of time than most other businesses. The entire mineral estate in the US continues to shrink. This is primarily because of various legislated wilderness measures. Consequently, the probability of finding an economic ore deposit in the US has decayed to less than 1%. Although the risk is high, the stakes far outweigh the gamble and are larger than most other businesses can offer. Mining properties, as investments or business opportunities, can provide effective hedges against long-term inflation because the real price for selected commodities, such as gold, may sometimes rise faster than inflation. Recessionary periods seem to provide the best climate for entering the mineral business or for a particular mining organization to expand its activities. Looking ahead and seizing opportunities during a depressed market will pay off. Property payments and royalties are likely to be lower. And the potential for an upward shift in prices for a given commodity is very positive. The decision to invest in a prom-

Thanks to strong industry support and longstanding partnerships, the University of Arizona has provided extensive pre-college mining education and outreach for more than a decade. These efforts to promote mining-related degree programs and the wide variety of indemand career opportunities reach thousands of middle and high school students and hundreds of teachers every year. The School of Mining Engineering & Mineral Resources is constantly looking at ways to help students overcome barriers into degree programs. But competition among degree programs for talent is fierce, and outreach has not made a big enough difference in the number of students pursuing mining engineering degrees. With workforce shortages threatening to undermine the industry, more is needed. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates 500 new mining engineering jobs each year, and according to a study by Deloitte (2023) nearly 50 percent of skilled engineers will reach retirement age in the next decade. At the same time, the 14 accredited mining or mineral engineering degree programs in the United States are producing fewer than 200 graduates annually (Society of Mining Professors and Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration, 2021). To better understand mining’s competitive position, the School of Mining Engineering & Mineral Resources conducted a comprehensive study to determine (1) how prospective college students, parents and educators perceive the industry, related careers and the mining engineering degree, (2) factors affecting students’ choices of degrees and career plans and (3) the roles parents and educators play and how they influence students. This article is the first of two installments to discuss the results. This installment focuses on what students, parents and educators think about mining and where they get those impressions, as well as the role parents and educators play in influencing students’ choices of careers and degrees. The second installment, scheduled for publication in a later issue of Mining Engineering, looks at what students are seeking in their degrees and careers, and how mining compares with other degrees and industries.

The Mesquite mine is being operated by Gold Fields Operating Co.-Mesquite, a subsidiary of Gold Fields Mining Corp. The mine Is located in southeastern California about 56 km (35 miles) east of the farming community of Brawley, California. The mine has been in commercial production since early 1986 and Is a conventional open pit mine developed on 6.1 m (20 foot) benches. The gold is recovered by heap leach using permanent heaps built in multiple 6.1 m (20 foot) lifts. This year's gold production will be in the range of 5,600 kg (180,000 troy ounces). Current ore production is about 18,140 tonnes (20,000 tons) per day while the total tons mined Is averaging 65,000 tonnes (72,000 tons) per day. The climate at the mine is extremely arid with rainfall of 7.6 cm (3 inches) per year. From early May until late October daytime temperatures generally exceed 37.8 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) and can be as high as 37.9 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit).

"Shotcrete and mesh are often installed to control ground deformation, falls and ejection between bolts. The combination of mesh and shotcrete forms a panel or plate that is typically bent by ground extruding between restraining rockbolts. The ground pressure applied (that is, the resistance of these panels to bending) over large ground deformations is important for maintaining ground support safety. This paper describes a new test device that measures this resistance and its evolution over large deformations. Mixes of shotcrete, mesh and other components that can maintain significant support pressure are desired, a characteristic described as the “toughness” of support. Results show toughness depends largely on how shotcrete is integrated with other components. Shotcrete strength is less important. INTRODUCTION Ground control safety often depends on supporting, or at least containing, the ground between the rockbolts. Shotcrete and mesh, in various combinations and with other components, are often called upon to do this (Figure 1). Applications are especially common in mines with squeezing ground or seismic loading. The support pressure maintained during ground deformation is key to the performance of these systems, and to protecting miner safety. However, the toughness of a design is difficult to estimate. Researchers at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) responded to this deficiency or “gap” by designing a full scale test device, described in this paper, and beginning a testing program. Some initial results from this program are reported to demonstrate test capabilities.BACKGROUND - TOUGHNESS Mining in ground that fails from the combination of in situ and mining induced stress is commonplace. Ground support elements are installed to reinforce such ground and preserve mine safety. Typically, the strength of support is considered key, and is used to prevent or halt yielding. However, ground movements driven by creep of weak ground or seismic loading may be impossible to halt altogether. In these cases, it is essential that support is able to yield with the ground in a safe manner while maintaining confining pressure that mobilizes the strength of rock in the immediate perimeter of the opening. In addition, it’s usually desirable to contain ground between rockbolts to protect miners from loose rock that might fall or be ejected. Shotcrete and screen are often employed, sometimes together and in combination with other support elements, to accomplish this function. A key characteristic of such a system is its ability to maintain support pressure through large ground deformations, a characteristic often called “toughness” – especially in support systems incorporating shotcrete. Toughness can be quantified as the work done during deformation (e.g. force x displacement)."

Introduction Extensive testing in the past ten years has shown that where a uniform natural gamma background is present in the strata bordering a seam, the thickness of the boundary coal left in place after mining can be determined by measuring the attenuation of that radiation (Nelson and Bessinger, 1989). Measurements made by the authors in underground mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois and Kentucky and by others in Wyoming and New Mexico have shown the presence of such a gamma background (Nelson. 1989). Natural gamma coal-thickness sensors of several configurations have been tested in mines owned and operated by the Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) in Pennsylvania and West Virginia (Nelson and Bessinger, 1988). This paper describes the installation of a natural gamma coal-thickness sensor on an operating continuous miner. Previous tests had shown that the NGB-1000 coal-thickness sensor manufactured by American Mining Electronics, Inc., of Huntsville. AL, is an accurate, mine-worthy instrument. This large gamma detector consists of a sensing head and a control panel. The sensing head contains thallium-doped, sodium iodide scintillating crystal, which is coupled to a photomultiplier tube. The control panel contains the electronic components required for calibration, count conversion and display to the operator. Methods Conditions at a Consol mine in northern West Virginia require that 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in.) of coal be left at the roof boundary of continuous miner development sections. This roof coal is required because the shale of the immediate roof is friable and unstable. In the past, operators have used a dirt band that is usually visible near the top of the seam as a guide in maintaining the proper cutting horizon. However, this is not always reliable. Earlier observation showed that the actual thickness of the coal left on the roof varied widely; further, it was noted that occasional, accidental excursions into the immediate roof required supplementary roof control measures, such as installation of planks or center bolts. Thus, it was concluded that operators needed a better source of guidance for control of the cutting horizon, and a roof-coal thickness sensor was scheduled for installation. The NGB-1000 sensor was installed on a Joy 12CM10 continuous miner in June 1988. The sensing head was mounted on the cutter boom of the miner, and the control panel was mounted in the operator's cab. Power for the sensor was initially derived from an intrinsically safe battery power supply. Initial measurements with the sensor showed that the calibration was the same as that used in earlier tests at two other mines, indicating the uniformity of the natural gamma background above the Pittsburgh seam. Operating personnel were initially skeptical of the instrument's accuracy, and were hesitant to use its readings as a guide in maintaining a proper cutting horizon. Because gamma attenuation, the instrument's operating principle, is somewhat abstract, attempts to demonstrate the instrument's accuracy by explaining that principle were generally ineffective. It was found, however, that an operator could usually be convinced of the usefulness of the instrument by placing a large piece of coal of fairly uniform thickness over the instrument's sensing head and allowing the operator to see that the instrument reading increased by an amount very near his estimate of the thickness of the piece. The mine was provided with seven battery power supplies and a charging station. The charging station was kept in the lampman's office, and the mechanic on each shift was instructed that he was responsible for two battery power supplies each day: a freshly charged one to be taken in at the beginning of his shift and a depleted one to be brought out at the end. This system worked well for a few weeks, but eventually some battery power supplies were left in use so long that their batteries were discharged too deeply to allow recharging. In addition, transport and recharging of the batteries represented an additional task for the mechanics, who were already very busy. Consequently, a request was filed with MSHA to allow the sensor to be powered through intrinsic safety barriers by an electronic power supply connected to machine power. The permit was granted, and the sensor was connected to machine power. After the sensor was connected to machine power, the only operating problem experienced was occasional failure of cables. A supply of the required cables was made and delivered to the mine so damaged cables could be quickly replaced. Much of the cable damage could be eliminated by slight modifications to the miner during a rebuild, so that cables could be installed in more protected locations. After the sensor had been in operation for about two months, a survey was made to determine its effect on continuous miner operations. In previous research, coal thickness measurements made in 88 locations by the natural gamma method were compared to measurements made in the same locations by observing drill cuttings and by inspections of drill holes with a borescope. That research showed that the gamma method is at least as accurate as the other two methods (Nelson and Bessinger, 1989) and is also much easier to use. The object of the survey described here was not to assess the accuracy of the natural gamma measurements. but rather to determine the effectiveness of the sensor output as a guide for the operator in maintaining control of the cutting horizon. Biooxidation processes for treating arsenical and other types of refractory gold ores are touted by many as being simple, inexpensive and environmentally friendly. One of the advantages claimed by proponents of biooxidation is that arsenic is disposed of as insoluble ferric arsenate which is suitable for long term disposal in tailings ponds. However, there is considerable controversy as to the stability of ferric arsenate with respect to re-dissolution of arsenic. In particular, there is concern that the amorphous ferric arsenate produced at low temperature is not stable, especially at the alkaline pH's required for cyanidation. There is a general lack of published information on the stability of arsenical bioleach tailings. Past work on ferric arsenate stability has usually involved purely chemical systems and the use of synthetically prepared precipitates. Upon completing the Salmita bioleach pilot plant campaign (Hackl and Wright, 1989) the author had the opportunity to test the stability of the arsenical bioleach/cyanide tailings which were produced. This paper summarizes the results of that work.

TQM is a term of which most metallurgists have heard and a system of which some have had first hand experience. This paper is designed to encourage further thinking on TQM and how it can effect your organisation. Consideration of organisational culture and objectives are a prime pre-requisite when planning for the implementation of TQM. It is argued that there is no "brand" of quality culture of TQM which can be applied en masse to the mining industry. Definitions ofTQM are proposed, and the essence ofTQM as being about increasing customer service, improving the quality of goods and services, and involving people in their work is discussed, in conjunction with the concept of Customer as applied to the metallurgical industry and TQM. The integration of TQM into Quality Accreditation Stan­dards is then discussed. Finally, examples of the benefits that may be achieved with Implementation ofTQM into metallurgical and operations groups is presented, along with an analysis of the difficulties of implementation into our businesses and operations.

Blasthole drilling by todays standards is not a mature operation. In most mining appli¬cations, the blasthole drill rig is the least understood piece of machinery. Draglines, mining shovels, and haulage trucks may have more charisma, but the entire mining process starts with the drilling of blastholes to facilitate removal of the overburden and/or the primary material being mined. There are two (2) principal drilling methods them being rotary and percussion. In certain situations, percussion drilling is the most practical method, but for most applications, rotary drilling using the rotary tricone bit is the common and accepted drilling technique. While the drilling rig is on the surface and quite visible to everyone, it is really the object at the end of the drill pipe, the tricone bit, that is doing the work and drilling the hole. The rig supplies power to the bit and air to clean the hole. In addition, it must be capable of providing certain other functions and should be properly outfitted to adequately support the rotary tricone bit.

Henderson Mine personnel have more than 20 years experience and have placed more than 400,000 m3 (520,000 cu yd) of shotcrete and concrete. Over the last 20 years, the mine has used a variety of equipment to place concrete, wet shotcrete and dry shotcrete and is constantly trying to cut costs and increase efficiencies. Recently, the mine received a state-of-the-art wet shotcrete placer. The batch plant was automated, and a mobile concrete-form jumbo was fabricated. The mine will also receive a new concrete transport truck. Henderson’s background The Henderson Mine is owned by Climax Molybdenum Co., a unit of Amax, Inc. It is an underground, primary molybdenum producer near Empire, CO. The mill is located between Silverthome and Kremmling, CO and is connected to the mine by 16 km (10 miles) of underground and 8 km (5 miles) of surface track. Except for the ore haulage system which is powered by overhead trolley, all mobile equipment is rubber-tired and diesel-powered.

Microtunneling has successfully completed both horizontal and vertical curves. This paper covers the historical development of curved microtunneling and a description of one microtunneling project. The completed microtunnel is used for electrical transmission in Japan. The crossing had several concerns including right of way, social disruption, obstructions, the cost of intermediate shafts, and political restrains. In order for this drive to meet all of the imposed restrictions, four horizontal curves and one vertical curve were planned and executed in accordance with the design. Iseki Poly-Tech of Tokyo, Japan designed and built the microtunneling machine to meet the project requirements. Curved microtunneling has been successfully used on fourteen projects in Japan. The reason for a curve has been that the project could not be rerouted, short straight drives could not be used to negotiate the curve, or the project’s social and environmental conditions required a curved tunnel. The following table (Table 1) includes summary information on 14 curved microtunnling projects that have been successfully completed in Japan. The first column is a reference number. Columns two through four include basic project information. The fifth column is the total project distance completed by microtunneling. The sixth column is the project’s microtunneling duration. The seventh column is the machine type and size. All of the machines listed are manufactured by Iseki Poly-Tech of Tokyo, Japan. The size is the internal concrete pipe diameter; all of the projects listed were completed with Japanese standard concrete pipe. The eighth column contains a general description of the soil. The soil type and blow counts are approximately equal to ASTM D 2487 standards. The ninth column lists the radius of the curve and the span distance or the distance microtunneled that included the curve. The radius of a vertical curve is denoted with a “VR”, a span with both a left and right hand curve is denoted with a “S”. Other significant first events are also noted in this column. The first curved microtunneling project was completed in 1982 using a conventional microtunneling machine with standard Japanese concrete pipe and a very long radius curve while maintaining grade for the gravity sewer. The second curved microtunneling project included multiple radii curves, all in the same direction, on a single drive. In 1989, on the fifth curved microtunneling project, a “S” curve was successfully negotiated. On the seventh curved microtunneling project, completed in1995, a tight radius curve was negotiated. In 1996, the eighth project included a vertical curve. The thirteenth curved microtunneling project, completed in 1997, was the first project to utilize a microtunneling machine specifically designed to negotiate curves. The possibilities of the use of ultrasonics in the extraction of gold and silver is the subject of a study initiated in our laboratory since the beginning of 1986. The study consisted of various aspects of extraction, the results of which are in· different stages of advancement. Reduction in leach time combined with higher recovery are the most striking effects so far. The ultrasonics machine, originally part of a small pilot plant, forms now part of a much larger unit. This has the remarkable effect of even higher recoveries and shorter leach times. These data suggested a study on the possibilities of reduction of thiourea consumption. Although promising, the results of these studies require check testing and will be published as soon as our findings have been confirmed. During the study, which consisted of the application in thiourea and cyanide leaching, some interesting side effects were observed. In the first place, a reduction in penetration time which might make coarse grinding feasible. Secondly, an increase in compaction of the filter cake which reduces pregnant liquor losses, especially with clayey ores and industrial waste products. These will be studied under contract in the near future.

The Morenci Open Pit Mine, located in south-eastern Arizona, is owned and operated by Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc. The Mine has been predominantly a rail mine since its origin in 1937. However, beginning in early 1986, a program was initiated to phase out the rail mining operation and replace it with a more flexible and productive truck haulage scheme. This transformation from rail to truck haulage will be accomplished when the current in-pit crushing and conveying project is completed in late 1988.

The use of cyanide in the processing of gold has been documented for over a century. It is still one of the more effective methods of isolating gold, as witnessed by the fact that in 1987 cyanidation was used in the processing of 91.5% of the gold produced in the United States.

Successful leaching of gold depends on appropriate chemical conditions; contact between leach solution and the gold particles; separation of the leach solution from the solids and extraction of the valuable ion from the solution. Irrespective of the leaching method employed the chemical conditions required are similar as is the dependence of solu­tion/gold contact on liberation. The various leaching methods available vary in the means by which gold/solution contact and solid/liquid separation are achieved. The essential difference between heap or vat leaching techniques and those involving agitation of a slurry is dependence on percolation for effective gold/solution contact. The most significant factor preventing uniform percolation is the presence of fines or clays. The quantity and character of the fines fraction is ore type dependent and may result from crushing, degradation during stacking or leaching, or the natural size distribution of the ore. The problems associated with fines can be aggravated during stacking and preparation of the heap. Segregation during stacking can result in concentration of fine particles at the centre of heaps. Further concentration of fines may also occur during irrigation by the movement of the fine particles with the solution. The end result is that the areas in which fines are concentrated become areas of low permeability. The contact between leach solution and the ore in such areas is, at best, slowed down dramatically and, in some cases, prevented altogether. The consequences of this phenomena are slow leaching and a reduction in recovery. The conventional solution to this problem is well known. Agglomeration of ore prior to heap leaching is practised widely. The effect of agglomeration is to immobilise the fines by causing them to adhere either to each other or to larger ore particles. The net effect is that the ore behaves as if no fines were present. The use of agglomeration is limited only by its cost, the most significant components of which are the cost of binding agent, commonly cement, and the capital cost of the agglomerating equipment.
