The Misima deposit is on Misima Island in the Lousaide Archipelago, 240 km east-southeast of the Papua New Guinea mainland, and 600 km east of Port Morseby. Misima is a narrow mountainous island 40 km long and up to 10 km wide. The highest point is 1035 m above sea level. Gold mineralization is restricted to the eastern and less rugged third of the island. The Melanesian population lives in coastal villages. Subsistence agriculture is the main activity, although copra and cocoa are grown in plantations on the eastern and southern coasts. Prior to 1950, mining was important in the economy of the island. Climate is tropical, with little seasonal variation in temperature or rainfall. Tropical cyclones occur about every 10 years (Fig. 1).

The Marysvale volcanic field of west-central Utah contains large areas of argillically altered rocks (fig. 1) that, in turn, enclose smaller areas of fine-grained, medium-grade, replacement alunite deposits and coarsely crystalline, high-grade vein-type alunite deposits. The largest replacement alunite deposits are [ ] located peripheral to a 23-m.y.-old monzonite stock called the Central Intrusive (fig. 1). The deposits formed in near-surface, highly oxidizing environments at the tops of hydrothermal plumes that were spaced irregularly around the stock. The deposits are horizontally zoned from alunitic cores through kaolinitic to propylitic envelopes. Vertically, characteristic alteration minerals progress from a pyrite-propylitic alteration assemblage at the base, upward through alunitic, jarositic, and hematitic assemblages to a flooded silica cap as shown on figure 2. The silica caps are cut by hydrothermal explosion breccias. d34Sso4 values of + 11.5 to + 15.4 permil indicate that sulfur in the hydrothermal plume was derived from underlying Mesozoic evaporites. The sharp upward transition from pyrite- propylite to alunite probably marks the paleowater table, and the top of the flooded silica cap represents the paleoground surface. Basin-Range extensional tectonism began shortly after alteration, and buried the replacement alunite deposits in basins beneath sediments eroded from uplands. The deposits were only recently exhumed.

INTRODUCTION A variety of instruments are available for measuring or monitoring the performance of underground mine-ventilation systems. In general terms, the instruments may be classified as those that measure air velocity and those that measure gaseous concentrations. All costs herein are in terms of 1978 US dollars. The mention of a specific manufacturer or device is not intended to be an endorsement by the US Bureau of Mines. AIR-VELOCITY INSTRUMENTS The basic instruments used for measuring the air velocity in mines are the vane anemometer and the smoke tube. Vane Anemometer Of the air-velocity instruments, the 102-mm (4.0¬in.) vane anemometer is the most common and is available as either a low- or high-speed type. The low-speed anemometer generally is the most suitable for measuring the velocities in ordinary airways. For a rough check of the velocity in an airway, it usually is satisfactory to hold the anemometer by hand, positioning it in the center of the airway for 30 sec. However, the resultant error may be as high as 25% , and such a hand-held approach is unsuitable when accurate or reliable measurements are required. To obtain more accurate measurements, the proper procedure is as follows: 1) Since holding the anemometer by hand generally causes the instrument to read about 15% high, it is mounted on a 0.6-m (2-ft) extension rod. 2) The airway is divided into equal right and left halves. A 1-min traverse is used in each half, moving the anemometer smoothly up and down in a zigzag pattern so that the entire half is covered within the allotted minute. 3) The manufacturer's correction table is applied to the readings to adjust the velocity calculation as necessary. Whenever possible, anemometer readings should be obtained in a long straight section of airway that has a constant cross-sectional area. Bends and obstructions should be avoided, since they cause turbulence and other discontinuities in the airflow and can degrade the accuracy of the velocity measurements. Although a series of velocity measurements at one location usually corresponds to within a few percent, this is not an indication that the airflows calculated from those readings are completely accurate. One reason is that the correction table provided with the instrument generally is not for that specific instrument; instead, it represents the average correction for all such instru¬ments made by the particular manufacturer. Most cor¬rection tables specify a correction factor of from 0 to 15%, depending upon the velocity. However, even after correction, the instrument error still may range from 3 to 5%. At low velocities such as those below 0.76 m/s (150 fpm), the instrument error can be two or three times greater than this, ranging from 6 to 15%. The new ball-bearing anemometers generally perform somewhat better at low velocities than did the older conventional anemometers. Another source of error is introduced when measur¬ing the cross-sectional area of the airway or entry. Under the best of circumstances, measurement errors, instrument errors, and a host of other minor errors all combine to cause a total error of at least 10% in the velocity calculation. The vane anemometer also can be used with reason¬able accuracy to measure airflows in mine-ventilation ducts. In this application, the anemometer is mounted on a rod and is held at the center of the duct end. For a duct that is discharging air, the average velocity in the duct is 85% of the centerline reading (Northover, 1957). For a duct that is taking in air, the average velocity is 70% of the centerline reading (Haney and Hlavsa, 1976). To measure the airflow discharged from a regulator or from a small hole in a stopping or bulk¬head, a correction factor for the area is necessary. A good approach in this situation is to traverse the area of the regulator or hole, holding the anemometer with an extension rod. This provides an average velocity that is multiplied by 85% of the measured area of the regulator or hole. In all cases, the manufacturer's instrument cor¬rection table must be used and applied properly. For accurate results, the anemometer should be returned to the manufacturer for periodic cleaning and checking. If it is in daily use, the anemometer should be returned about once per year, and proportionally less frequently if the usage is less frequent than on a daily basis. Smoke Tube The smoke tube may not appeal to individuals who believe that good measurement results can be obtained only with expensive, complicated, and fragile instru¬mentation. Nevertheless, smoke works about as well as anything for the routine measurement of low air velocities in mines. The following procedure yields reasonably good results: 1) Two marks are scratched 7.6 m (25 ft) apart on the floor of the airway. 2) The smoke tube is used to release a cloud of smoke in the center of the airway, about 0.9 m (3 ft) upstream of the first mark on the floor. 3) A timed interval begins when the leading edge of the smoke cloud passes over the first mark, and the interval stops when the leading edge of the cloud passes over the second mark. 4) A factor of 20% is subtracted from the cal¬culated velocity to determine the true average velocity, providing a correction for the centerline and for the spreading effect at the front of the cloud. Typically the agency taking the property will make an offer on the property, hoping that the owner will immediately accept and allow work to begin. If a mutual resolution regarding the property value cannot be reached, however, the municipality will condemn the premises and institute a condemnation action in a court of law, which is when the problems begin. The power of the government to take the subject property is limited by the Federal and State constitutional duty to pay "just compensation" for the property.

In any filtration, it is primarily the filter medium (cloth) and cake filtering properties that control the type of filtration equipment used and filtration conditions. The advent of new types of filter cloths, such as the membrane cloth discussed in this paper, can result in significant changes in filtration techniques and areas of application for filtration. For many suspensions, for instance, conventional filtration is uneconomic compared to gravity separation or not filtering at all (as with product recovery from dilute streams) because the solids are very fine, are hard to retain and build up filter pressure rapidly, and once retained are hard to remove. As a result of the developments discussed here, this is no longer the case. This technique and the use of the membrane filter cloth is well established. This filtration is currently being used for white liquor filtration in twenty-four mills worldwide in the chemical recovery step of the kraft process for producing paper pulp where it is replacing gravity thickeners in new plants. Filters up to 1000 sq. ft. (100 sq. meters) are filtering large volumes of solids from hot caustic solutions. The filtration materials and techniques discussed in this paper open the way to new methods and applications for filtration in the mining industry. It is not the intention of this paper to give a vigorous analysis of the different separations, but to outline some of the ways in which this filtration technique might be used in the mining industry.

Introduction Coal petrography is the microscopic study and description of coal and other organic substances in terms of the microscopically recognizable organic constituents and of the rank of the material. Petrography studies of coal and other organic substances are useful in themselves, and have a number of practical applications. Some of these include determining coking quality of coal, estimating yields of methane from coal beds, and assisting in coal preparation. Petrography studies can also help in mine planning, in source rock studies, in combustion problems, and in synthetic fuel applications. Most recently, petrography has been found to be useful in studying sediment-hosted ore deposits. Microscopic constituents-macerals Under the microscope, coal is a heterogeneous assemblage of the coalified remains of woody matter and plant remains from the swamp or bog from which the coal was formed. The individually recognizable materials making up the organic mass are termed macerals by petrographers. They are the organic equivalent of the minerals that make up rocks. Coal petrographers can examine coal in two ways. Those interested primarily in the microscopically transparent macerals or in the study of very low rank materials, lignites for examples, like to use transmitted light microscopy where light passes through a microsection about 3 to 6 µm (0.0001 to 0.0002 in.) thick (Fig. 1). The dominant red color of the section in Fig. 1 is inherent, not a stain or produced by a filter. Distinct suggestions of textures in the reddish constituents can be seen. The red material is vitrinite and is thought to be the coalified remains of woody tissues. The yellow, lenticular substance is exinite. It is what remains of the waxy coating on a spore. Also seen are white dots of mineral matter and black opaque material that is better seen and described in polished sections. A polished microsection is prepared by grinding and polishing to a mirror polish a compact of coal and embedding resin or a coherent chunk of coal. The resulting microsection is then examined in a reflecting microscope. High magnification, 200X to 400X, and an oil immersion lens are needed to resolve fully the macerals of the organic matter so prepared. Figure 2 shows two macerals, an even gray vitrinite, unstructured and fusinite, a whitish, more or less cellular constituent. Fusinite is thought to represent more or less completely carbonized cellular material. Coal petrographers appreciate that coal is a heterogeneous material. Figure 3 is a view of another section. The generally structureless gray material is vitrinite. The bean-shaped dark constituents are exinites. The long, narrow, somewhat scalloped dark constituent is cutinite. Cutinite is thought to be derived from leaf coatings. Some coal petrographers would describe the large white, structureless mass as micrinite. Others might prefer the term macrinite. A few fragments of fusinite can also be seen. Figure 4 shows a coalified fungal remain, termed sclerotinite. It is surrounded by vitrinite and crushed fragments of fusinite all floating in a sea of embedding resin. Sometimes the microscope reveals the great heterogeneity of coal even on the microscope scale. Figure 5 shows a section with semi-fusinite, inertodetritinite, vitrinite, and micrinite. The nature of the heterogeneity may be judged by noting that the long dimension of the photomicrograph is about 70 µm (0.0027 in.). Measurement of rank Hoffmann and Jenkner (1932) discovered that measuring the reflectance of the vitrinite constituent of coal in a polished section gave a good measurement of the rank of the coal. About Cominco Only the original Broken Hill zinc deposit in Australia is larger than Cominco's Red Dog deposit. Indeed, the third largest zinc deposit in the world is Cominco's own Sullivan mine in British Columbia. The production plan at Red Dog is based on mining 1.9 Mt/a (2.1 million stpy) or ore, to produce 635 kt (700,000 st) of zinc and lead concentrates. At full production, Red Dog will be the largest zinc mine in the Western world. It will also be one of the lowest cost producers in the Western world. And Red Dog will be one of the first major hardrock mines to operate in Alaska in modern times. The Red Dog project will be the third and largest of Cominco's Arctic mining developments in the past 13 years. The company's Black Angel mine in Greenland started up in 1973. And the Polaris mine, high in the Canadian Arctic, began production in 1982. Red Dog is one of the world's great mineral deposits. It is a unique combination of large size, high grade, and a waste-to-ore ratio less than 1:1. The present mineral reserve (Table 1) is estimated to be 77 Mt (85 million st), at a grade of 17.1% zinc, 5% lead, and 82 g/t (2.4 oz per st) of silver. Mine life is estimated at nearly 50 years. Cominco is the largest producer of lead and zinc in the Western world. Cominco's smelter in southern British Columbia is the largest lead and zinc plant in the west. Cominco also produces copper, steel, tin, gold and silver, along with potash, ammonia, urea, and phosphate fertilizers. But Cominco's major products are lead and zinc. At present, Cominco produces more than 10% of the Western world's needs for these metals. Background-Red Dog The Red Dog mineral deposit is located in northwestern Alaska, about 960 km (600 miles) by air from Anchorage, Alaska's largest city. The Red Dog region is home to more than 5000 people living in 11 villages. The largest village is Kotzebue, with a population of about 2500. The village is located about 144 km (90 miles) southwest of the mine. The country around Red Dog features rolling hills, leading into mountains to the north and east. The deposit, at an elevation of 305 m (1000 ft), is in permafrost. But the area is not nearly as cold as that encountered in the Canadian Arctic, or on Alaska's North Slope. At Red Dog, the permafrost is relatively fragile. It can be thawed fairly easily, a factor in engineering designs. Red Dog Creek flows through the mineral deposit. One of the natural phenomena at Red Dog is the presence of significant heavy metal contamination in the creek. This has eliminated all fish in the vicinity of the deposit. The contamination, and resulting mineral stain, led to the discovery of Red Dog. The staining is caused by rain and snowmelt. This leaches the heavy metals from the mineral zone, which comes right to the surface in many places. As mining progresses, this surface mantle will be removed. This will

Introduction Raise boring is the most accepted form of mechanized hard rock boring in the mining industry. It appeared logical to take this mechanization one step further by introducing computers. Atlas Copco Jarva has produced a series of raise boring models that use an integrated computer. The company decided to use electronics and computerization, not for marketing purposes, but to make its equipment more cost-effective. Basis of Cost-Effective Design From the manufacturer's standpoint, it is possible for the equipment owner to reduce the cost of putting in raises by: • Replacing existing components with less expensive components that produce the same results; • Replacing existing components with more expensive components that make the equipment more productive; • Mechanizing equipment to reduce associated labor costs; and • Combining the above. Analysis of a standard raise boring machine (RBM) system showed that little could be done with less expensive components. It appeared, however, that the RBM could be more productive by transmitting more horsepower through the expensive drill string, while being precisely controlled by computers. An RBM system includes a basic machine, drill pipe, accessories, reamer, and cutters. The approximate percentage cost of various components on a standard system capable of boring 300 m (985 ft) long and 3-m-diam (10-ft-diam) aises in medium to hard rock is shown in Table 1. Also shown is the increased cost above standard of the Jarva computerized machine, and the productivity of both. Increased Productivity Penetration is important during the reaming cycle for more productive raise boring. This is possible by increasing the cutter load with constant rpm or increasing the rpm with constant cutter load. To increase thrust and maintain rpm requires increased capacity in the cylinders, drive train, main thrust bearings, drill string, electrical motors, and power units. To increase rpm and maintain cutter load requires only increased capacity in the electrical motors and power units. This is possible because the torque requirement remains constant for a constant thrust load. Only the horsepower increases, proportional to rpm. Since cutter costs are a big factor in raise boring, changes in machine performance must be analyzed to assess the effect on cutter performance. With a standard or typical carbide cutter, as used on raise boring machines, the effects of increased thrust or rpm are shown in Table 2. The assumption is made that the base data is the current rpm and thrust range where the cutters are now operated. It is also assumed one variable is held constant while the other increases. The result of this comparison, approximately, is that a 50% penetration increase can be achieved with little or no increase in cutter cost if rpm is increased 50% and cutter load is maintained constant. A similar 50% penetration increase can be achieved with a 45% increase in cutter cost, if the cutter load is increased by 20% and maintained constant. From an equipment standpoint, it is significantly less expensive to increase rpm 50% than it is to in-

The comminution laws The grindability of the ores or minerals is an important factor that could not be deduced from their mineralogical characteristics (Testut, 1958). Many theories have been proposed to determine the amount of work required in a comminution operation as a function of the nature of material, size and shape of the minerals before and after of comminution. The most important laws are proposed by Rittinger, Kick and Bond. According to Rittinger (1867), the work is directly proportional to the new surfaces produced during the comminution. Kick (1885) believes that the work needed to produce similar modification is proportional to the volume or mass of the material. Bond, during his 25 years of experience and research, reached to the conclusion that on the average the energy required for a known comminution is between the Rittinger's and Kick's laws (Bond, 1952). According to Bond's Third Theory, the work input is proportional to the new crack tip length produced during the particle breakage, and equals the work represented by the product minus that represented by the feed. The work input is given by the following equation: [111W = 1 Owi( FP FF(1)] where W is the The energy input to the mill, (kWh/st); F is the Feed size based on 80% passed, (µm); P is the Product size based on 80% passed, (µm); and W; is the Work Index, (kWh/st) Methods to determine the Bond Work Index Various methods have been proposed by Bond to determine the Work Index. There are some problems with the Standard Bond Grindability Test: •Requiring a special mill. •Requiring a relatively large amount of sample. •Being relatively time consuming and tedious. [ ] During the recent years, numerous attempts have been made to install faster and easier methods to determine the Work Index. A complete description of these methods is presented by Yap et al. (1982). Determining the Bond Work Index by a new size ball mill During the recent years, researchers at the University of Tehran determined the Bond Work Index, using the Anaconda simplified methods by its Denver 305- x 127-mm (12 x 5-in.) laboratory wet ball mill. The equation used to calculate the Work Index for the above mill containing 16.12 kg (35.5 lbs) of steel balls is as follow: [1 _ 1-1W;=0.54x [P [)(2)] In addition, an attempt has been made to determine the Bond Work Index similar to standard Bond ball mill procedure but by a different ball mill, smaller and in consequent portable and less laborious than the Bond ball mill. Method description Just as the standard Bond grindability test, this method is a locked-cycle dry grinding and screening process that is carried out until steady state condition is reached. Test equipment The test is conducted in a special ball mill, called the New Size Ball Mill (NSBM). The mill is scaled down with a coefficient of two-thirds from the standard Bond ball mill. It measures 200 x 200 mm (8- x 8-in.) inside (instead of 300 x 300 mm or 12 x 12 in. in Bond ball mill). Just like the Bond

Classification of Mills Mills may be classified under four categories that relate to the type of action utilized to grind the material: Tumbling. The most important of these to the minerals processing industry are tumbling mills. Grinding media is actuated in a free¬form pattern in a rotating drum causing it to tumble, material being ground passing through the tumbling media. Work is done by a combi¬nation of attrition and impact. Impact. Grinding media is actuated in a distinctive pattern so that it impacts the material being ground. Work is done by impact. Roller. Grinding media is actuated in a distinctive pattern, mate¬rial being ground passing under or between the media. Work is done by compression. Fluid Energy. There is no grinding media as such. Energy is imparted to the material by transfer of kinetic energy from the fluid to the material. Grinding is accomplished by interparticle impact and attrition. Tumbling Mitts The main physical arrangement consists of a lined cylindrical drum mounted on trunnion bearings driven by a ring gear and pinion, in turn connected directly or through a reducer to the electric motor. Variations to this general arrangement include: (1) Drum mounted on rollers instead of trunnions. (2) Bearings on the drum directly, not on trunnions. (3) Utilization of multiple pinions on the gear. (4) Trunnion-type drive arrangement through a gear reducer with¬out the use of a ring gear. (5) Motor rotor mounted directly on the drum with stator around the drum, thus eliminating the gearing. The drum consists of a shell and heads lined with replaceable liners of various types and configurations. Various types of tumbling mills are tabulated; illustrations of some are shown. The types are so designed for specific purposes. Media utilized include steel rods, balls, or rock of the same material as being ground or of special material in the instance where iron contami¬nation is detrimental (see Figs. 9 and 10 and Table 2). Impact Mills Although there may be some overlapping of interpretation of terms, impact mills are considered those in which the media is actuated in a distinctive manner, at relatively high speed, impacting the material to be ground. There is an overlapping also in what may be considered to be crushing equipment rather than grinding equipment. Hammer Mill or Impactor. Material is fed into the equipment; inside hammers of impactors revolve at a high speed, breaking the material on impact with the hammers (see Fig. 11). FirstMiss Gold Inc., formerly FRM Minerals, Inc., is heap leaching gold from difficult, low grade ores at the Getchell Gold Mine in Humboldt County, Nevada. A two-thousand ton per day facility is leaching material from waste dumps from old operations and from small, satellite deposits around the main orebody. A three-thousand ton per day pressure oxidation mill is under construction to treat sulphide gold ores in the main deposit. The Getchell gold deposit occurs in a wide fault zone in carbonaceous, calcareous sediments and intrusive rocks. Intense clay alteration is typical within the mineralized zones. Silicification is a less dominant alteration phase within the ore. Gold in the upper oxide portion of the deposit occurs both in a free state which is leachable and complexed in fine disseminated pyrite which is not leachable. Gold in the lower sulphide portion of the deposit is almost entirely complexed in pyrite. Abundant arsenic sulphides and variable amounts of remobilized carbon are associated with the gold mineralization throughout the deposit. The waste dump material being heap leached was derived from the upper portions of the gold deposit. The dumps contain high quantitites of fines, clays and sulphides of iron, arsenic and other trace elements. No stockpiling of low grade materials was attempted during the old mining operations, therefore, the dump material is highly variable and unpredictable. To find out if there are any potential savings in "in-the-wall haulage for open pits," the Swedish companies ASEA and Kiruna-Truck in 1984 gave us financial support to study this solution in more detail. In the study, the use of in-the-wall haulage was studied for three hypothetical open pits with different sizes and shapes. Annual ore production rates also varied. A part of this thorough study was published by the Swedish Mining Research Foundation (see Report F 8444, "The Use of Electric Trucks and In-the-Wall Haulage in Open-Pit Mining," in Swedish with an English Summary). Although in-the-wall haulage is of interest in some open pits, the local terrain is important for profitability. The authors do not think in-the-wall haulage is of any major interest for the mining industry. The following is a summary of some of the author's findings. To place the haul road in the wall is not of interest in open pits with declining metal contents in the bedrock. In such mines, the volumes from the haul roads will not yield revenues. The cost per m3 for an underground haul road is much higher than for a haul road in the pit. This means that it is only of interest to place the haul road in the wall when mining gets deeper than about 50 m (165 ft). In-the-wall haul roads will reduce flexibility in the pit, and it will make necessary the use of smaller equipment with lower productivity and higher costs per ton. As Hustrulid, et al. show (Table 4), excavation savings of material hauled are very low, $0.10 to $0.25/t (0.09 to 0.27 per st). The extra operating cost, due to lower productive equipment, will normally be much higher and thus destroy the whole idea with in-the-wall haulage. If electric trucks are profitable for in-the-wall haulage, it is normally also profitable to use electric trolley assist for trucks on the haul road in the pit. But the profitability of using electric power is different in different countries, and depends on the relation between the cost for electric power and diesel fuel. In the US, diesel fuel is inexpensive compared with electricity, but in a country like Sweden, diesel fuel is much more expensive. In most open pits, the trucks have to move a considerable distange from the loader until they reach a final haul road in the wall. A trolley line along such temporary haul roads will be exposed to flyrock. It is normally less expensive to perform rock support from the open pit than from underground ramps in the wall. In Fig. 8, Hustrulid et al. gives the impression that the underground haul roads will be very close to each other. This is seldom the case. Figure 1 shows a haul road in the wall. The haul road passes through each cross-section only once. Arranging a reliable dewatering and rock support system from only one underground ramp is probably impossible. Many more drifts are therefore necessary. In our report, we also studied what would happen if the final pit slope is increased by 5°, using underground drifts in the wall. Our conclusion was that, the extra cost for drifts, rock support, pumps, etc. destroys the whole idea, and that it was better to accept a higher stripping ratio with the haul road in the pit and to use conventional low-cost open pit equipment. Finally, we think it is would be difficult to try to reduce the safety factor when determining the slope angle by moving the haul road in the wall. Minimizing the risk for pit wall collapse is also important with in-the-wall haulage, primarily because men and equipment will be working in the pit, but also to guarantee many accesses between the pit and the haul road in the wall.

Maintenance costs in the mining industry often account for as much as 18-20% of total operating costs and with the cost of labor and materials rising, they threaten to become an even larger percentage of the total. Yet, without an effective maintenance program costs can soar beyond what they would be without a program. In other words, when production equipment is down, there is no production and no product to sell in the marketplace. This cost of downtime in lost product far exceeds the actual cost of maintenance, which is defined here as labor and materials. Thus, mine management must have an effective maintenance program to avoid downtime and meet production targets. Attaining an Effective Maintenance Program Many mine management and operations supervisors believe that an effective program is a function of how hard they push maintenance. Yet, when vital production equipment is inoperable and production is lagging, no amount of pushing helps. In actuality, maintenance has little control over its own destiny and needs support from other departments to deliver good service. Success of the maintenance program depends on gaining control of those factors that directly influence maintenance. Consider the following. Organization-The maintenance organization must be structured for maximum responsiveness to production needs. Unfortunately, some needs are immediate and many are unknown in advance. The maintenance department has little control over them. These outside influences limit the department manager's ability to control his own organizational structure. Preventive maintenance procedures-Routine lubrication, equipment inspection, minor adjustments and the like are controlled mostly by maintenance. Yet, scheduling preventive maintenance depends also on the availability of equipment controlled by other departments. Planning-The purpose of planning maintenance jobs is to ensure that the best use is made of maintenance resources. If the production department creates an environment of running repairs and emergencies, there can be little planning. Even well-planned jobs will suffer if there is less than full cooperation in carrying them out. As a consequence, the maintenance department is not blocked from planning, but the value of its planning is reduced. Scheduling-Maintenance scheduling should be a joint effort. Although maintenance does the planning, production must agree to the scheduled maintenance of its equipment. Workload-As a service organization, the maintenance department has limited control over its workload because it must consistently respond to other department's demands. At best, maintenance controls only the fixed portion of its workload-utility work, janitorial service, maintenance shop work, and assigned repetitive and preventive maintenance duties. Unscheduled and emergency work are initiated by operations. Major maintenance actions require full cooperation. Labor productivity-The effective use of labor is tied to other key functions of maintenance. These include organization, preventive maintenance, planning, scheduling, and emergency work. An area type organization, for example, can often respond more quickly to immediate needs than a centrally controlled maintenance group. Yet, area maintenance can result in lower labor productivity unless tight control is exercised. One of the advantages of a good "detection-oriented" preventive maintenance program is early discovery of problems and better opportunity to schedule corrective work in advance. Under planned work conditions, use of labor can be more productive. Complete planning and scheduling can minimize time spent on each job, increase effectiveness of supervision, and improve labor productivity. Finally, if emergency work is minimized, there are fewer delays, less lost time, better coordination, and more productive use of labor. While labor productivity is an important factor in carrying out maintenance, it also is influenced by outside factors. However, few realize the impact of being able to improve maintenance productivity. Economic open-pit and surface mining often call for ever increasing volumes of lower grade materials. So it is important, often critical, to develop precise expense and production estimates for the large electric mining shovels now in use. An electric shovel's basic application is to "shovel up" material, starting at ground level with the dipper moving up into a working face or bank. It's impractical to dig below ground level with a shovel, except briefly or in unusual circumstances. The shovel working face is "the bank," whether the material is dug from natural bed or blasted. The shovel's digging attachment, the boom and dipper handle, is built in standard and long range configurations. A standard digging attachment is normally used for loading into haulage equipment. The long range attachment is normally used for side or hack casting to a spoil pile. It is also used fir loading into haulage equipment placed above shovel ground level, as in some coal loading applications. Shovel clipper size and hauler capacity should he matched so that a hauler can he loaded in three to four shovel work cycles. Five cycles is usually the limit of good practice. If fewer than three cycles are required, the hauler is too small. More than five cycles indicates possible excess harder waiting time for loading, or shovel waiting time for too few haulers. Full dipper loads, including the last dipper or ''pass, " are essential for economical shovel and hauler match. Consistent need for a final partly full dipper to fill the hauler shows an improper match between the two.

Underground mine service water in South Africa is used for dust suppression and cooling the environment as well as the pneumatic rock drills. Although the chilled water is not intended for potable use, it is often used as drinking water by mining personnel. Furthermore, droplets sprayed are liable to be inhaled. The water is recirculated on a continuous basis and is a potential source of infection by intestinal microorganisms or water-borne diseases such as cholera or typhoid. In order to protect the health of the underground workforce it is customary to disinfect the chilled service water, The bacteriological quality of the water is monitored by enumerating total aerobic bacteria (TAB), total coliforms (C C) and Escherichia coli (E Coli). E coli is an indicator of human faeca_l __ - -- contamination, The bacteriological standard specified by the Anglo American Corporation for mine service water is less than 3000 TA B per 100ml, less than 2 CC per ml and the total absence of E Coli. There are several disinfecting agents available for use. Among these are UV irradiation, ozone, chlorine dioxide and compounds that produce hypobromous and hypochlorous acids. Historically, the methods of treatment have been chlorine based and include the use of gaseous chlorine (surface installations only), calcium hypochlorite granules or tablets, chlorinated cyanurate tablets, sodium hypochlorite solutions and hypochlorite produced by electrolysis.

The 150 MWe circulating fluidized bed (CFB) power plant described in this paper is the product of recent Bechtel experience in the industrial power and steam market, where the economic feasibility of fluidized bed projects has been proven. The inherent ability of CFB boilers to burn low grade fuels makes it possible to also burn low ranking coals or coal wastes, including anthracite culm, coal mine rejects, and coal wash plant waste slurry. The impact of fuel characteristics on plant design is addressed. This includes solids handling, steam generation, sulfur capture, and auxiliary load requirements.

Introduction This article discusses the unique range of properties of platinum and its applications as a high technology metal. World reserves of this strategic and precious metal are confined mostly to South Africa and, to a far lesser extent, the Soviet Union. An analysis is given of past trends in world platinum output. The timepath is computed for the world platinum output rate, covering a period of more than 350 years. This is based on the postulate that the industrial conversion of a virgin resource progresses according to a Sigmoid curve. This computation is performed by means of a nonlinear, three-stage optimization model employing a multiform Sigmoid function. Finally, the price dynamics are examined. Platinum is the most important of the group of the platinum metals to which it gives its name. Other platinum group metals are iridium, osmium, palladium, rhodium, and rhutenium. The metals occur in nature in close association and are chemically very similar to each other. Three members of the group - platinum, iridium, and osmium - are the heaviest metals known to man. Platinum's density is 11% heavier than gold and about twice the weight of the same volume of silver or lead. Properties Platinum is a typical grayish-white metal. Its special properties were known 1000 years ago to the American Indian craftsmen of what is now Ecuador and Colombia. From those distant beginnings, platinum is now firmly established as the most precious and distinctive metallic element known to mankind. It is shown in Table 1, platinum has a unique wide range of physical, chemical, and mechanical properties including high melting point, resistance to chemical attack, high catalytic activity, mechanical strength, and malleability. These properties make it indispensable for use in many industries. Application Platinum is first and foremost a high technology metal. During the last few decades, fertile scientific minds searched for and developed widespread cost-effective uses for this precious metal. Its unique properties render it irreplaceable in many key industrial processes. Important major fields of application include: • protection of man's natural environment (pollution control), • defense, • fuel production, • fertilizer manufacture, • glass and glass fiber manufacture, • pollution-free energy generation - replacement of nuclear and fuel operated power plants, • electronics, • dentistry, • medicine, and • jewelry. Besides these industrial markets, platinum is increasingly finding a place in investment portfolios around the world as investors switch from gold and silver holdings to this relatively scarce and strategic commodity. Platinum has a growing popularity among private investors. This is being accelerated by the predicted "big crash" of the US dollar and its associated weak currencies, which American financial analysts are expecting towards the end of the decade. Figure 1 shows the demand for platinum in various applications throughout the western world in 1986. The total demand amounted to 88.6 t (97.6 st) of which autocatalyst usage accounted for 32.8 t (36 st) or 37%, the biggest share. Catalytic converter technology is increasingly centered on rhodium-platinum three-way catalysts. These catalysts are able to deal with all three pollutants - carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides - in a single catalytic unit. Introduction Gravity-based coal/mineral preparation plants must be operated to yield products of a quality satisfactory to existing markets. However, because of historic control problems, recovery is frequently sacrificed to achieve quality, resulting in losses of valuable product. Plant control has ranged from intuitive in-plant spot quality judgments made by various operators to gross methods involving such devices as density gauges, floats, grabsample on-the-spot sink/float tests, etc. Millions of tons of quality coal/minerals are lost to refuse each year, because of the historic lack of a continuous and dependable control system. The result is serious economic, as well as environmental, losses. While the economic losses are obvious, the less obvious environmental ones, in the case of coal, result from the misplacement of more ignitable quality fuel to refuse banks. Until recently, a control system capable of supplying a market-grade coal/mineral product, while continuously minimizing product losses to refuse, has been technologically unavailable. Coal/Mineral Washing Tracer System Performance Monitor (CMWTSPM) The first Coal/Mineral Washing Tracer System Performance Monitor (CMWTSPM) originated in the late 1970s as an innovative idea and ultimately resulted in Leonard Patent No. 4,345,994 issued on August 24, 1982. In a classic example of successful university basic research, the patent was followed by two US Department of Energy (DOE) merit awards for fundamental optimization research at the University of Kentucky, a number of publications, a successful applied research program (underwritten by SENTREX at Irvine, CA) and field tests at the Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Company Keystone Mine near Indiana, PA. The system is now operational and is marketed by SENTREX as the SENTREX Performance Monitor. A diagram of the system is shown in Fig. 1. This system relies on metal detection as the basic tracing medium. Since it is capable of tracing particles as fine as 0.19-in., the system is ideal for coarse coal/ mineral cleaning processes. Basically, the CMWTSPM records the distribution of synthetic coal/mineral particles, of known size and specific gravity, between product and refuse output streams of coal/mineral washing, gravity-concentrating processes. For any given particle size, surface area and shape are constant. The particles are [ ] designed to find their way into the center of their respective inprocess specific gravity/size streamlines. The system will yield a complete partition curve to show the percentage of misplacement for any selected size/specific-gravity particle fraction, thereby providing a point-to-point insight into process failure. When used to evaluate operational processes, this full partition curve is far more diagnostic than the simplifying, derivative, single index number known as the Ep value. The Ep value is commonly used for convenience to represent symmetrical partition curves, but, if the actual partition curve is non-symmetrical, use of the Ep value can result in serious diagnostic error. While the Ep is useful in design and for rapid performance evaluation and process adjustment, the full partition curve is by far the more diagnostic. It will provide insight into the behavior of particulate flow, through non-symmetry, as a means to highlight potential systemic failures. Performance of the process is measured and improved by determining the extent of particle misplacement and by making timely adjustments to the unit to reduce the misplacement. Used in this manner, the CMWTSPM is not only a long needed processing control monitor, but it is also a very powerful diagnostic tool which, in the hands of skilled operators, has

An area in Southwestern Wyoming is rapidly becoming the soda ash capitol of the world. Starting only 20 years ago from a unique deposit of trona, the out-put has rapidly increased until now about half of the soda ash produced in the United States comes from this area. Chemically, soda ash is sodium carbonate, a large tonnage, widely used alkali. The largest single industrial use is in glass manufacture, where 25 tons of soda ash are used in producing 100 tons of glass. Other big users are the detergent and chemical industries. The trona deposits in the Green River basin of Wyoming, were formed about 75 million years ago as part of a geologic period when an ancient lake alternately went through periods of being a large fresh water or smaller brine lake. Today these deposits lie from 800 to 3000 feet below the surface in a semi-arid, almost desert region just west of the Rocky Mountain Continental Divide at an elevation of 6200 feet. In this area there is a prevailing westerly breeze and almost every afternoon the velocity reaches very windy conditions. Rainfall is minimal, being only 6-8 inches of moisture per year with an evaporation rate exceeding 24-inches. Most of the moisture comes in winter snows or summer thunderstorms. Temperatures are low with below zero weather dur¬ing most of the winter and early morning frost is not uncommon during the summer months. There are many trona beds varying in thickness from a few inches up to 15 feet. The deposits now being mined vary from 8 to 10 feet in thickness. The ore is mined by driving tunnels either via conventional explosives or with continuous boring machines. It is transported to the shafts via conveyor belts
