Acidic waters typified by acid mine drainage, copper dump leach solutions and steel pickle liquors will typically contain SO4-2 and cations such as Fe+3, AI+3 and for the pickle liquors, sometimes Cr+3. These acidic waters will often react with limestone, present naturally or introduced for purposes of solution neutralization, to form reaction - inhibiting coatings of gypsum and gelatinous, metal hydroxide precipi¬tates. The coating thickness, as a function of pH, was quantified for both reactive (calcite, limestone) and non-reactive (quartz, barite, fluorite) minerals, and the data were related to the hydroxy species diagrams and to solution turbidity measurements. Coatings were found on the reactive minerals at a lower bulk solution pH than on the non-reactive minerals.

The Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) has developed a unique process for selective fatty-acid flotation of phosphate minerals from siliceous ores. The process takes advantage of preferential adsorption (over silica surfaces) and high reactivity of fatty-acid collectors toward apatite under slightly acidic conditions (pH 5 - 6.5). The process was successful in upgrading various Florida and North Carolina phosphate samples containing 7.7% to 15.3% P205 and 62.3% to 77.2% siliceous gangue (Insol). The resulting concentrates assayed 28.1 % to 33.1 % P205 and 4.1 % to 9.9% Insol, with high P205 recoveries of 81.8% to 92.2%. Depending on the degree of surface contamination of the silica particles in the flotation feed, one or more cleaning steps, with or without sodium silicate, would be required to achieve higher-grade phosphate concentrates.

The Stillwater Mining Co. (SMC) is a partnership of Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. and Manville Corp. Since the summer of 1990, SMC has operated a precious metals smelter at Columbus, MT for further upgrading of concentrates from its platinum-palladium mine. The facility's gas-cleaning system utilizes "oxidation/dilute-mode," dual-alkali scrubbing technology to capture sulfur oxide gases from the process gas streams. This paper describes the rationale for selecting the dilute-mode, dual-alkali system and summarizes the design parameters. Also discussed are the startup problems encountered and their solutions.

Liebherr Mining Equipment Co., of Newport News, VA and Baxter Springs, KS, introduced the T282, a new two-axle, diesel-electric, AC drive haul truck with a payload capacity of 327-t (360-st). The T282 was unveiled at a press briefing in October 1998 at the company's Baxter Springs research and development1 manufacturing facility. In addition to an increase in pay- load capacity, the truck's AC drive system has been de- signed to allow for easy configuration to a trolley-assist system with minimal additional equipment. The T282 provides fuel savings, reduced maintenance requirements, and reduced downtime and maintenance costs, providing the mine operator with increases in productivity. Basic dimensions and weight of the T282 are: ? Overall length, 14.5 m (47.5 ft). ? Overall width, 8.7 m (28.7 ft). ? Loading height, 6.5 m (21.2 ft). ? Height - body up, 13.9 m (45.9 ft). ? Microwave heating of iron ore was investigated as an alternative to conventional reduction processes to solve the problem of slow heat transfer. Microwave heating and reduction tests were run on composite green balls made from coal and magnetite concentrate. Benchscale tests were run on both powdered and pelletized feeds using a 15 kW microwave generator. A significant increase in the reduction rate was obtained. With 20% excess stoichiometric carbon in the mix, more than 90% reduction of the iron ore can be achieved in about 10 min at temperatures of around 1,000°C. The reduction of iron ore with coal by microwave heating produces a pure, dust free, high-Btu flue gas that can be used in related thermal operations. Depending on the purity, the reduced iron product could be fed directly to an electric arc furnace for melting. In some cases, the removal of a slag phase may be required to eliminate excess silica and alumina.

Political events during the past decade have caused businesses throughout the world to think globally. Countries once closed to free market enterprises are now open and seeking out foreign investment to help improve the well being of their populations. The mining industry has always been a global one. Today, though, the industry has become even more global. The driving forces behind this include the opening up of higher grade, lower cost mineral deposits in undeveloped and developing nations. In addition, permitting delays in the United States, coupled with stricter environmental guidelines and a general anti-mining attitude, have forced the mining industry to look outside US borders. The Mineral Economics and Management Society (MEMS) took as the theme of its seventh annual professional program "Economic Globalization of the Mining Industry." About 100 people attended the conference held in Arlington, VA in late March. Speakers included members of the investment community, academia, government and the mining industry.

This paper reports on recently completed research that investigated the health fabric of mining communities in British Columbia (BC), Canada. The project, funded by two national funding agencies and the BC Government, and supported by numerous provincial organizations, marked a collaboration between mining engineering and health researchers. The study employed mixed-methods. First, a quantitative phase merged census, mining industry and health data to investigate the relationship between declining economic conditions and health outcomes (mental illness and stress-mediated cardiovascular disease). Second, a qualitative phase investigated community health issues associated with the mining boom-bust cycle from the perspective of health and social service providers working in a northern BC coal mining community. Third health research findings were disseminated to potential knowledge users in the hope of enhancing mine impact assessing and integrated mine planning. The paper provides a synthesis of the research methods used in this project, and highlights the main indicators used and key findings. It concludes by identifying recommendations, and future research needs considered to be of particular importance to the health and sustainability of mining communities in BC, Canada and around the globe.

This paper reviews uses of sodium sulfide in the flotation of oxide minerals of copper, lead, and zinc. The activation and depression effects of sodium sulfide are of particular importance because of their applications with oxidized lead and copper ores. In spite of its industrial importance, the nature of the heterogeneous reactions between sulfide ions in solution and the surface of oxidized minerals has not been fully understood. Hence, proposed mechanisms of the sulfide action in flotation, methods of measuring and monitoring sodium sulfide in flotation pulps, and variables influencing the sulfide addition are analyzed. Recent studies on sodium sulfide addition to flotation pulps, monitoring its concentration, and the optimum dosage control using platinum and/or sulfide specific ion electrodes are discussed.

The financial evaluation of an orebody uses estimates for the grade of ore produced during each year for the life of the mine. Assay data from the Dolphin Scheelite Mine is used to estimate grades by the Polygonal, Ellipsoidal and Disjunctive Kriging Methods. The results are compared with simulated production data, to show the existence of a bias associated with each method. The affect of bias on the financial evaluation of a theoretical model ia assessed.

Subsurface density changes can be detected by very precise surface gravity measurements. A feasibility study, combined with field experience using modern instruments, will indicate the probability of success. In addition to projected anomaly parameters, surface conditions that effect the survey precision must be evaluated. Examples with excavated zones at 9 m (30 ft) of depth and [+] 22 microgal error are compared to the same model at 30 m (98 ft) of depth. The figures illustrate anomaly detectability. The survey error is a function of surface topography and lateral density variation in the very near surface.

Fine crushing and rod grinding have been investigated using a laboratory-scale jaw crusher and a rod mill. The net energy consumption in both crushing and grinding was evaluated from torque measurements. An empirical relationship was established between energy consumption, particle size and operating parameters. When the mill feed size is reduced, through fine crushing, to about 80% passing 3 mm, the energy consumption will be minimized in a comminution chain of fine crushing and coarse rod grinding. The results in fine crushing were compared with a large-scale test.

Many gold producing states are requiring rinsing of spent heaps to render the leached ore compatible with the environment and are placing reatrictiona on effluent pH, cyanide, and metals concentrations. Parameters which may affect efficient rinsing of heaps have been investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in laboratory column studies. Rinse profiles for cyanide, metals, and pH as a function of the volume of water passed through the spent ore are presented. Fresh water rinsing of spent ore in columns showed that rinsing of cyanide was not affected by the rinse solution application rate. Interrupted rinsing with a rest period between applications reduced the volume of water required to meet effluent cyanide concentrations. Chemical oxidation of the effluent with recycle of the rinse solutions reduced effluent cyanide concentrations and the volume of waste solution generated. Water rinsing was not successful in reducing the alkalinity of the cement agglomerated ore. A dilute acid solution had to be applied after cyanide removal to reduce effluent pH levels to specified limits.

In order to investigate the design parameters of a future longwall in a thick coal seam a numerical model of gas emission from the goaf area was developed. A Longwall goaf was modelled as a collection of different size coal blocks. For each coal block the partial differential equation of gas flow was independently solved. In developing the flow equations, both pressure-driven and diffusion driven gas flow regimes were considered. The total gas emission rate was calculated by integrating the gas release from each individual coal block over the whole goaf area. The main output of the computer program are gas flowrate from goaf and residual content of caved coal in the goaf as a function of distance from the face. The model was applied to a longwall face driven in a thick seam where large volumes of coal in the roof were to be left behind the face. The gas contained in the coal was mainly CO, with a high desorption rate. Simulations were under- taken to quantify the effect of size of the caved coal on the flowrate from the goaf. The flow properties of coal, such as diffusivity, permeability and coal swelling due to gas adsorption, were directly measured on coal samples from the seam.

This study deals with the mineralogical-geochemical characteristics and the industrial usage of the olivine from the dunites that crop out on the west of the Topuk village (Orhaneli). Mineralogical compositions of non-altered dunite samples are averagely as: Olivine (>90%), serpentine (1-4 %), opaque minerals especially chromite, magnetite, pyrite (1-3 %), and secondary minerals as magnesite, chlorite (1-2 %). X-Ray Diffractograms of the dunite samples indicate that olivines are in forsterite (93 on an average) composition, and chlinochrysotile and lizardite accompany to the forsterite. Chemical analyses of the dunites show that MgO, SiO2, Fe-,03 and LOI contents vary from 40,99 to 50,2 %, 34,67 to 40,6 %, 6,8 tol3,7 %, 0,11 to 11,27 %, respectively. SE-TAT Mining Company states that the study area has 400.000.000 tonnes proved, 800.000.000 tonnes probable and totally 1.200.000.000 tonnes olivine reserve. Consequently, all studies indicate that Orhaneli Olivin has convenient mineralogical and chemical properties and the grain size (0.04-40 mm) for industrial usages such as abrasive, olivine sand products, steel slag conditioner, balast and covering material in industry: Orhaneli olivines are demanded especially from the firms related to refractory industry, iron-steel factories, naval forces and shipyards. SE-TAT Mining Company also exports these olivines to different countries such as Macedonian and Spain.

Introduction The city of Nuremberg, located in Bavaria in the Federal Republic of Germany, started building a subway in 1967. The construction operations began in a southern suburb, where no complications were encountered in the design and execution of the job. As the first subway line approached the downtown area of the city, the civil engineering challenges increased rapidly. Tunnels had to be excavated next to, or below precious historical buildings, and the work of the responsible engineers was closely watched by the public, who were very anxious about any damage to the existing beautiful old houses and churches. The job has been handled successfully to date in cooperation with the owner-designer, the geotechnical consultant and the contractors, who jointly went through a process of systematic learning and gathering of experience, and who developed a modern tunneling technique specifically tailored to the natural properties of the encountered ground conditions and the requirements of the city of Nuremberg. The application of scientific methods has been an important part of this development. Mining companies are increasingly looking at Global Positioning System (GPS) technology coupled with 3D mine planning and visualization systems to deliver increased productivity and reduction in operating costs in drilling and blasting operations. Leveraging GPS into drill and blast operations requires that a drilling plan be developed and imported into the GPS to guide the operation to a planned and desirable outcome. State-of-the-art mine planning software systems provide the engineer with a 3D environment in which to design and visualize drill and blast plans. This paper discusses producing and exporting 3D drill and blast plans to GPS and how some coal companies are utilizing GPS and mine planning software technology in the drill and blast process.

The extraction behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions in the presence of bromine as an oxidant has been studied. The effect of concentration of ammonia, bromine, and pH of the solution on the rate of dissolution of gold was investigated. The dissolution behavior has been analyzed using electrochemical method, and its results were compared with direct leaching tests using gold powder. The overall dissolution of gold in ammoniacal solution containing bromine was found be affected significantly by pH of the solution and the concentration of bromine. Addwest Minerals' turnaround of the Gold Road Mine in 1996 proves the old adage "mines are made, not found." The underground mine, located in Arizona's San Francisco mining district, was reopened in 1995. Start-up proved difficult because the initial mining method created significant ore grade dilution. This paper discusses a practical method for enhancing the performance of mining work crews. The method, described as the Work Crew Performance Model (WCPM), seeks to define performance variability within similar tasks of an underground work crew. Key components of the WCPM include: •job definition through task analyses, •the ranking of job elements by perceived cost consequence, •observational techniques to establish performance baselines, and •cost linkages between adherence to task procedures and measures of consequence for noncompliance. The components of this model emphasize a reliance on learning from a veteran work force and using that information to reinvest in strategies to enhance safety and efficiency. These strategies are not limited to technological efforts but include consideration of the so-called "soft-skill technologies, " aimed at reducing variability in individual performance and at effecting a continuous improvement in overall system effectiveness.

Selective fatty acid flotation of carbonate gangue from sedimentary apatites was achieved under acidic pHs without a specific apatite depressant and without conditioning the pulp with the collector. Concentrates (35% to 38% P2O5, 0.8% to 1% MgO) with high recoveries (80% to 85%) were produced from Indian and Chinese dolomitic ores. The calcareous and/or dolomitic-siliceous phosphate ores of South Florida and Utah required two flotation stages: one for carbonate removal, as mentioned above, and the other for phosphate recovery from siliceous gangue. Preliminary tests on the South Florida ore gave concentrates analyzing 29% P2O5 and 0.8% MgO, with a P2O5 recovery of 76%. A concentrate obtained from the western US phosphate ore from Utah assayed 30% P2O5 and about 1% MgO, with a P2O5 recovery of 89%.
