The United States Bureau of Mines conducted research on high-intensity magnetic separation methods for upgrading tantalum concentrates from Alabama. Process flow sheets were studied to maximize tin removal and minimize tantalum loss. Using laboratory-scale equipment, concentrates were produced which contained over 65% combined Ta2O5-Nb2O5. Up to 78% of the tin was recovered as a byproduct, containing about 70% SnO2. Only 1 to 5% of the tantalum reported with the tin byproduct. The producer subsequently incorporated high-intensity magnetic separation into its process flow sheet to provide concentrates for the National Defense Stockpile.

Although explosives constitute only a small portion of a mine's total cost, the relative success of each blast has a tremendous effect on subsequent activities such as excavation, crushing, and equipment maintenance. Beginning in January of 1993, tests were carried out to determine whether productivity could be improved by replacing standard ammonium nitrate fuel oil mixtures (ANFO) with a high density, high performance blasting agent. The study was carried out at gold mines, coal mines, and cement quarries in Nevada, California, Colorado, and New Mexico. A wide variety of rock types and blasting conditions were encountered. Results showed that at most operations productivity was sufficiently improved to more than offset the increase in explosives cost. This resulted in a net reduction in mining cost. This paper presents a summary of these results.

Many times during the construction of a project, whether large or small, the engineer will become involved with management of the work and workforce. In some cases, mine management will turn over the direction and responsibility of doing the work to the engineer. Because of this, it is important to know some of the basic principles of human resource applications- among other management concerns. This chapter, therefore, looks at the fundamental principles of human resource management. Three broad discussions are presented to the reader. These are: (1) organization, communications, and responsibilities of management; (2) analysis of worker motivation; and (3) supervisory leadership. Each topic encompasses the current thinking for coal mining and mining management. Much of the information in this chapter comes from Practical Coal Mine Management, by this author and published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., which discusses in depth many of the ideas presented here. The Equis and El Roble projects are located in the Cordillera Occidental of Colombia. The Equis vein deposits have sulfide ore reserves of 95,955 mt (105,770 st) grading 8.51 g/mt (0.248 oz/st) gold and 12.4 g/mt (0.36 oz/st) silver with 0.94 % copper, 1.10% lead and 11.06% zinc. Ore reserves at El Roble are estimated as 1.1 Mmt (1.21 million st) grading 4.89 % copper and 3.39 g/mt (0.099 oz/st) gold. Geologically possible reserves at Equis may total 1.6 Mmt (1.76 million st). El Roble has the potential to contain several tens of millions of metric tons. Exploration included diamond drilling, trenching, channel sampling, rock and soil geochemistry, geophysics and tunneling. Erratic high grade samples affect the weighting of channel and drill core samples. Secondary reconcentration of gold is also a factor. Sample maps and graphs show the distribution of values to be highly variable. Geostatistical treatment of some of these data gave important guidelines for parameters such as sampling densities, drill hole spacing and confidence limits.

Several nonionic surfactants and one anionic surfactant were tested to enhance the flotation response of a low-rank coal. The nonionic surfactants included an ethoxylated octylphenol and several polypropylene-polyethylene block copolymers, and the anionic surfactant was a dioctyl sulfosuccinate. All of the surfactants improved the yield significantly, but the influence on grade was complex. To elucidate the mechanisms involved, separate studies were conducted to determine the emulsification behavior of the surfactants. For the nonionic water soluble reagents, a correlation between the emulsifying power of the surfactant and the flotation response was observed. An increase in the number of droplets produced was considered to he the main reason for increases in the yield. However, a small amount of surfactant adsorption on coal is essential to promote adhesion of oil droplets. When the surfactant was introduced into the flotation pulp prior to addition of dodecane, the benefits of the surfactant decreased significantly. The decrease was attributed to both a decrease in hydrophobicity of coal through increased surfactant adsorption and a decrease in the surfactant available for emulsification. When a surfactant dispersed in oil was used, the transfer of surfactant to the aqueous phase was minimal, and a considerable increase in yield was observed.

Regular entry trusses are used in headgates, tailgates, roadways and intensely-faulted areas. These trusses have proven to give the required support and maintain roof stability even under major abutment loading conditions for both the re-treating and advancing longwalls. Areas previously requiring steel arches have been eliminated. A special Continuous Entry Truss? provides permanent support to adjacent tunnel/crosscut zone for more than 300 feet in each tunnel. The continuous nature of the tensioned truss allows sup-port forces to be placed on the roof in not just the two-dimensions of regular trusses, but in a full three-dimensions. A newly developed Roktruss? provides support in an arched 30-foot high rock zone. The Roktruss? allows truss support concepts to be used in an opening with a curved roof.

Minproc Engineers Inc. (Minproc) recently completed the construction and start-up of a process facility to treat 14,000 t/d of gold-silver ore at Kori Kollo, Bolivia. The comminution circuit consists of crushing and SAG-ball mill grinding. Breakage characteristics of the ore were determined and a circuit model developed. This enabled variations of the circuit to be simulated, and evaluated in terms of predicted performance to provide the criteria for final engineering design. Subsequently, analysis of the operating circuit provided data for circuit model-fitting. The validity of the original model and circuit performance predictions are discussed.

Because of the nature of the breakage in the Barmac vertical spindle impactor, the 80% reduction ratio is very small, so that when the energy efficiency is calculated by Bond's method, it appears to be very low. However, the product size distribution contains a high proportion of fines. It is argued that the production of these fines accounts for the high energy consumption, and Bond's method is modified to account for this, by considering the crusher to be, effectively, a number of smaller crushers in parallel, each having a different reduction ratio.

In this work, the block theory was applied to determine the safe limit of the angle of face slope at Limestone quarry of Assiut cement company in order to decrease the occurrence of dangerous potential key blocks. Four joint sets were observed and measured at the face. Computer program based on the vector analysis technique was developed to determine the removable block codes. Stereographic projection was also used in this work to determine the removable block codes and to calculate the maximum limit for the angle of dip of the free face, which was found to be 77°.

A bulk compositional chemical analysis often provides incomplete information to help the mineral processor when faced with the problem of removing troublesome contaminants in low concentrations. Michigan Tech has developed a unique approach for addressing this problem. A combination of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and image analysis was successfully used to characterize the species responsible for phosphorus contamination of less than . 05 weight percent in iron ore. An automated routine acquired the chemical signature of each particle on a back scattered electron image. The few particles containing phosphorus were identified from the hundreds of particles examined, and the phosphate phases present were easily characterized.

Most magnesia, MgO, whether of natural or synthetic origin, is utilized in its dead burned or periclase form as refractory linings for the production of steel. Continued research in refractory science combined with good refractory maintenance and improvements in steel making practice have resulted in decreased use of magnesia. To make up for this loss of business producers of synthetic magnesia have started to manufacture a variety of magnesium based chemicals that are utilized in many diverse industries and applications.

Previous research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines showed that autoclave cyanide leaching of used automobile exhaust catalysts for recovery of platinum group metals (PGM) was technically feasible. This work involves a more detailed investigation of the chemistry of the dissolution of PGM in cyanide solutions. The PGM species in solution identified by ultraviolet spectroscopy. Pt and Pd cyanide complexes were square were The planar in geometry, while the Rh complex was octahedral. The rate of dissolution of the PGM was also investigated using a rotating disk technique. Dissolution rates increased in the order of Rh, pt, and Pd, respectively.

The successful application of factors limiting the? availability of coal in eastern Kentucky depends on ac-curate assessment of the original resources. Examination of several previous coal-resource estimates for the region reveals significant differences among the outcomes. These differences relate to methods of analysis, biases in data and their utilization, and the problem of defining the lateral continuity of mineable beds. Improvements in the methods of estimating the original resources would greatly enhance the reliability of the results of the Coal Availability Program.

The reliable quality assessment of grouting operations is one of the key issues in establishing impermeable grout curtains around shafts, drifts and tunnels. Reliable opera¬tional information on the decrease in the permeability of rock during the grouting process facilitates the assessment of the effectiveness of the completed curtain and assures production quality. Quality control and assurance also fa¬cilitates the early detection and elimination of possible de¬fects in the grout curtain. Thorough control of the grouting process provides the capability to evaluate decreases in the permeability of water-producing fracture zones prior to the beginning or the continuation of excavation of the shaft, tunnel or drift. In order to achieve this objective, post¬grouting hydrodynamic investigations are conducted prior to the initiation or re-initiation of work on the underground workings to measure the decrease in the permeability coef¬ficient of aquifers during grouting operations. 8.1 QUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL OF THE ISOLATION OF ROCK BY GROUTING THROUGH HOLES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACE Quality assurance and control are based on measuring the decrease in the permeability coefficient of water-pro¬ducing horizons as a result of injecting grout into the drill¬holes. For this purpose, the value of the acceptable residual permeability coefficient is calculated beforehand based on the acceptable value of ground water inflow into the shaft, drift or tunnel as specified by the "construction norm and integrated practice (SNIP)" (Anon., 1976). Having ob¬tained the values of aquifer thickness, permeability, and head distribution for each aquifer from flowmetric data (dis¬cussed in Chapter 3), the average value of the permeability coefficient of all aquifers intersected by the shaft is calcu¬lated as [ ] where Ki is the permeability coefficient of the "ith" aqui¬fer; Pi is the pressure of the "ith" aquifer; and M; is the thickness of the "ith" aquifer. The total expected inflow of ground water into the shaft is [ ] where RK is the radius of the contour of influence; RCFB is the radius of the shaft; and p is the coefficient of dynamic viscosity of the ground water. The necessary reduction of the coefficient of permeabil¬ity of the aquifer [ ] where Q is the expected inflow of ground water into the shaft from eq. 8.2; Q.-fin is the acceptable inflow of ground water; and a is the safety factor. By knowing the average permeability value of the rock and the permeability reduction coefficient, it is possible to determine the value of the acceptable residual permeability coefficient for all the aquifers [ ] The values of the permeability coefficient, pressure, and thickness for each aquifer are determined from the data gathered during the hydrodynamic investigations conducted in grout holes prior to beginning the grouting operations as discussed in Chapter 3. After injecting the grout into the first of the holes, the injection into each of the following grout holes is preceded by repeated hydrodynamic investi¬gations. Using the data obtained for each water-producing zone, a graph is constructed where the numbers representing the grout holes in their order of grouting are placed on the abscissa, and the values of the aquifer permeability coeffi¬cient are placed on the ordinate (Fig. 103). This curve char¬acterizes the change in permeability of the given hydro¬stratigraphic unit as grouting operations are completed, one hole at a time. The results of grouting operations are considered to be positive when each sequential observation records a steady decrease in the permeability of the aquifer. The permeabil¬ity measured prior to the injection of the grout into the last hole must be lower than or equal to the acceptable perme¬ability as determined by the application of eqs. 8.1 through 8.4. Table 8.1 presents illustrative data on the hydrogeo¬logic properties of aquifers at a mine shaft prior to the initiation of grouting operations. Data also are presented on the reduction in the permeability coefficient during the in¬jection of the grout. The shaft in question intersects eleven aquifers. Based on data concerning aquifer pressure, thick¬ness, permeability, and the expected inflow rate of water for each of the strata, the average permeability coefficient is calculated according to eq. 8.1 as K = 0.2 x 10-12 m2. Technology development has played a crucial role in the minerals industry throughout history. The development of new technology allows mankind to produce metals and minerals at progressively lower cost of production in real terms, and therefore at progressively lower prices, improving their availability, accessibility and utilization worldwide. However, the developers of such technology are not guaranteed to reap the benefits from this effort: There is an expectation that technology developers will gain an advantage over their competitors. Is this a short-term benefit that results from a temporary cost or efficiency improvement, or is it a sustainable longer term "edge" that prevails even after metal or mineral price has been eroded by the implementation of a major step change technology? This issue is examined by reference to several case study examples in the copper industry. BACKGROUND The development and adoption of new technology has played a crucial role in the commodity minerals industry throughout history. As new, cost-efficient technologies are commercialized, the cost of production decreases, and this enables lower grade ore to be processed profitably. This in turn increases the availability and supply of the metal or mineral of interest, and ultimately (in a free market environment where the supply- demand balance determines price) inevitably decreases the metal or mineral price. This leads to the question: Why should mining companies invest in (new) technology development if the result is a decrease in the product price? "The development process of Metal Resources Technical and Economic Evaluation Expert System (MRTEEES) is introduced in the aspects of requirements analysis, design of the expert system, main functions of the expert system and features of the expert system. The system is based on C/B/S mixed mode and uses ASP.NET technology with .Net Framework being chosen as the development platform and metal resources database providing data support at the bottom layer. The system is an auxiliary management system for metal resources technical and economic evaluation and has the basic functions of auxiliary decision analysis, metal resources database management, data management and comprehensive query. Technical and economic evaluation model can be set up by users independently according to at which stage a project is, mainly including exploration stage, development stage and production stage, and according to the mining methods, for example underground mining, surface mining and in-situ leaching mining. Then, the technical and economic evaluation parameters can be generated. By inputting the value of each parameter in a simple and convenient way, the evaluation results can be directly calculated out and shown in the form of diagrams among others, and feasibility evaluation report can also be automatically generated, making the technical and economic evaluation process accurate and efficient. As the system can achieve the functions of scenario analysis, sensitivity analysis, shareholder’s returns analysis, horizontal comparison of different projects, it can improve the ability of project senior decision makers for rapid response to the rival and meet the demand of pricing negotiations. IntroductionWith the arrival of a new round of industrialization upsurge in both developing and developed countries, growth of demand for metal resources is entering a new stage. Population involved in the new industrialized countries is about four times that of all previous industrialized countries, implying resource consumption increases dramatically both in speed and in quantity. It is a must to seize the strategic opportunity of developing and utilizing metal resources around the world to lay abundant resource base for national industrialization. Objectively speaking, global configuration of metal resources is an inevitable tend. Presently, many issues, for example, resources exploration, mining, merge of mining companies, metal trades, mining financing, etc., generally show the feature of globalization. For the reality that competition for metal resources is becoming fiercer, industry standards of mineral resources will undoubtedly be improved. Occupying large scale mineral resources with high grade and developing them with low cost is the base for the survival of mining companies and metal resources merchants. With the growing demand of global investment in mineral resources exploration, which is at the upstream of the industry chain, geological exploration industry is promising. Globally building market relationships for mineral resources exploration companies is key to their sustainable development. Developing large and super-large deposit with low cost is also an important approach to enhancing core competence of a country or an enterprise. Mining companies around the world are rushing to purchase mineral resources globally. However, in different countries, economic, financial and tax systems for mineral resources vary greatly, and mining and processing techniques, technical parameters and equipment selection also change a lot. Thus, pro-phase research work is necessary for feasibility evaluation of mineral resources projects and it can be time wasting if taken in the traditional way. The coal mining industry is divided into two distinct economic segments based on Coal Supply Agreements. Coal supply agreements generally fall into two categories, spot or long-term, with the selected contract term being driven by the buyer's market expectations, security of supply considerations, fuel tonnage and quality requirements, and economics. Short-term or spot coal purchases are generally market driven and are highly competitive in today's marketplace. Long-term contracts, particularly those involving captive mines and mine-mouth power plants, are commonly driven by considerations other than economics. These other considerations, such as Reserve Conservation and Resource Recovery, Security of Supply, and Maintenance of Levelized Costs may increase the cost of coal, often needlessly and without benefit to the buyer or seller. The basic economic principles which guide the market driven metals industry and generally guide the spot coal sector of the coal industry should apply equally well to the long-term coal supply contract. The artificial constraints imposed as a result of regulated rates of return should be re-examined and in most cases, abandoned. There are many methods of surface and underground coal mining being used today such as, open-pit, contour, mountaintop, and area mining for surface mineable reserves; conventional, standard continuous and super-section continuous miners, and longwalls for deep reserves; and highwall miners, thin seam miners and augers in between. This discussion is primarily directed to surface mining, however the same principles of least cost mining on a Net Present Value basis must be considered in all cases.

This paper discusses how many of the common practices in conveyor specification and design are out of date compared to the current expectations of users for safe, serviceable, reliable, and fugitive material-free conveyance of bulk solids. Ten of the most common mistakes made in the specification and design stages related to user expectations are reviewed along with the cost vs. price implications of those decisions. A general specification and design hierarchy that designers can use to improve conveyor design is included.
