Based on the classical definition of optimization, flotation plants of today are far from being perfect, effective, or functional as possible. Though considerable efforts have been expanded in the optimization endeavor during the last decade, much more needs to be done in the future to optimize our flotation plants and operations. The major problem in designing an optimum flotation circuit is that the flotation process depends on the interaction of several physical and chemical parameters. In the past, there has been a tendency to only consider the effects of chemical factors such as flotation reagents: collectors, frothers, conditioning reagents, pH, etc. On the physical side, the emphasis has been limited to the liberation characteristics, grinding time, percent, solids in the pulp and flotation time. Its only recently that we are employing particle size analyses, on-stream analysis, oxidation reduction potential and the like, as operating controls. The design, operation and control of a mineral processing plant depends on costs incurred at all stages, from inception (testing for flowsheet development) through plant closure and beyond. To ensure that micro- and macro- engineering technology is transferred to operational levels, the academia, testing engineers, designers, operators, consultants and management must all get involved in the transformation process. Historically, in the 1950’s engineering empiricism was strengthened through micro-engineering based on fundamental and mechanism. Unique scientific apparatus such as zeta meter and infrasizer were used to test new hypotheses. With the advent of computers in the 60s and 70s, complex differential equations were solved to study and understand unit processes and to assess mechanism assumptions. Such efforts contributed to improved understanding of the unit operations such as comminution, flotation, thickening, filtration and the like. In the 80s and 90s with the availability of more sophisticated computer technology involving modeling procedures, advanced numerical methods, image analysis, nonlinear-curve-fitting and data adjustments, it was possible to test newly developed models under the production environments. These innovations are now available to develop simulator and sensors (such as particle size analyses) for macro-engineering purposes including plant design, automatic controls and optimization. Accordingly, it behooves the mining companies and plant operators to take advantage of these new developments to control a large number of physical and chemical parameters involved in the plant operation and optimization. This is especially important in light of declining head grades and increasing operating costs in the U.S. minerals industry if it wishes to maintain a competitive edge in the international marketplace. In regard to the future R & D activities in the field, in order to arrive at useful correlations in micro- engineering research, it is essential to consider a plant operation as an interactive engineering system representing the combined effects of physics and chemistry, equipment and operation. Selective flocculation studies of Agbaja iron ore with starch-type and nonionic polyacrylamide-type flocculants has been conducted to determine the effect of flocculant type. The results indicate that corn starch was slightly better than cassava starch in selectivity performance. Cassava starch was in turn better than Superfloc 16, while the poorest results were obtained with commercial starch. Sodium humate shows better dispersive capability, and thus enhanced flocculation results, than sodium silicate. Pulp pH affects the zeta potential, polymer chain configuration and hence selective flocculation. Overall results indicate that recovery and separation of this very fine grained iron oxide by selective flocculation is feasible.

An elastic-viscoplastic material model allows for time- dependent rock mass motion in proportion to excess stress above the elastic limit. The model produces rounded stair-step curves of displacement vs. time that are similar to those obtained from recent borehole extensometer measurements made in the central portion of the Ross Shaft pillar at the Homestake mine. The work in progress, including two- and three-dimensional finite element analyses using the UTAH2/3 codes, indicates that the model is a step towards more realistic safety and stability analysis, but that inclusion of rock mass damage may be desirable.

The initial intent of the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) was to improve worker health by providing more information about the hazards of chemicals used in the workplace. However, the impact of the HCS goes well beyond worker right-to-know. There are direct costs associated with compliance. In addition, labelling and hazard communications can provide a competitive advantage to producers of minerals that have not been identified as hazardous. Often, the lack of hazardous information about a substance is due to the lack of scientific study, rather than an indication of product safety. Currently, industry and regulators sometimes give known hazards greater weight than unknown risks.

Falconbridge is a major basemetal producer in the Sudbury Basin of Ontario, Canada. The company identified a need to find a safe and cost-effective replacement for the welded wire mesh used to support loose ground during underground nickel mining. Falconbridge took a methodical approach to the concept of a spray-on liner as a screen replacement, proving the strength characteristics of the liner as a safe, cost effective and suitable method of supporting ground Compact, hydraulic mixing and spraying equipment were developed and are now in use at the Fraser Mine. Tekflex has been approved as a wire mesh replacement and has been in use since November 1998.

Gold deposits of the Carlin Trend occur within sedimentary rocks deposited across the Paleozoic continental margin. Lithologically dissimilar units, juxtaposed along the Roberts Mountains Thrust Fault system, constitute three distinct stratigraphic packages: autochthonous miogeoclinal carbonates, allochthonous eugeoclinal siliciclastic rocks, and an overlying coarse clastic overlap assemblage. Gold deposits occur within all three stratigraphic packages, with economic concentrations localized at structural and stratigraphic settings similar to those which host petroleum traps. Along structural breaks, gold is selectively concentrated within favorable stratigraphic units. Host stratigraphy controls the character of the ore, including average grade, grade variability, physical properties and metallurgical response.

Acquisition of coherent and representative data about the state of processes remains a major problem of process control. This paper proposes an approach that ensures coherence in measurements on an operational industrial process. The basic technique employed relies on balance equilibration of resource mass flow. An interesting particularity of the set up is the ease with which it can be adapted to check productivity or detect sensor failures. In the case of sensor failure, it suffices to examine the evaluations before and after balance equilibration. The algorithm was tested by means of computer simulation using data from an industrial metallurgical flowsheet.

Prior to 1974, bauxite-producing countries were poorly informed about important aspects of the bauxite/alumina/aluminium industry. This placed them at a disadvantage in negotiations over the development of the industry with interested parties. Since the formation of IBA, its member governments have acquired a fuller awareness of the structure and operation of the industry. The role of IBA is to enlarge the relevant information base of member governments, to act as a forum for the exchange of information on the industry and to form a focal point for multilateral discussions on problems in the industry with corporate interests and with governments of consuming countries.

The Mt. Baker Ridge Tunnel, under construction in Seattle, will be the world's largest-diameter soil tunnel with an inside diameter of 19.2 m (63 ft) and an effective outside diameter of about 24.4 m (80 ft). The five-lane highway tunnel will be constructed using a "stacked-drift" scheme in which an articulated or "flexible" tunnel lining consisting of 24 concrete-filled drifts is constructed to form a horizontal compression ring followed by removal of the soil core. Geotechnical factors, including variable strength hard fissured soils, high horizontal stresses, potentially unstable sands, and prior slope instabilities, significantly influenced the innovative design and construction approach.

With the radical reduction in price of computer hard- ware and software during the last decade and an associated increase in memory capacity, the concept of continuous conveyor monitor is now a reality. With this tool, the various problems normally encountered in large conveyor installations can now be avoided at an early stage. • The four main areas of application are: • Design verification • Hand-over certification • Preventative maintenance and increase of system availability Failure analysis The paper introduces the techniques used and gives examples where the service has been used.

Productivity improvements reduced the number of continuous miner sections from seven to three while maintaining full productive capacity. So a decision was made to test an advancing tailgate ventilation system on the shortwall mining section. Having the shortwall mine its own return air system has freed the third mining section for more productive, less costly mining. The advancing tailgate has provided effective ventilation across the face and gob with acceptable pressure losses. The low-productivity, tailgate-development, continuous-miner section has been transformed into to a high-productivity, development-retreat section that is also available for long-term mine development duties, increasing mine planning flexibility.

The new generation of computer environment provides mineral processing plants with convenient tools to store and retrieve or to analyze on-line process variable values as given along time by the various sensors installed in the plant. The paper describes the application of classical tools, such as time series analysis, to retrieve the hidden information contained is such data. The concepts used in single signal processing (autocorrelogram, power spectrum, ARIMA descriptors) and multi-signal processing (cross-correlogram, cross-spectrum) are briefly reviewed. Some examples are given to illustrate their application (sampling, data filtering, process behaviour prediction, process evaluation, data synchronisation). Examples are taken from mixing, flotation and leaching processes.

In the field of grouting, practitioners fre¬quently advocate procedures that are often unique and contradictory. As a result there has been considerable debate as to what constitutes optimum grouting practice. A knowledge of both the rheological properties and the flow characteristics of grouts is essential to the development of a rational understanding of the grouting process. Flow models and viscosity experiments have been conducted using cement grouts comprising High Early Strength Portland and Microfine cements. The addition of superplasticizers was found to enhance the flowability of the grouts as well as to reduce the effective groutability ratio. Steady state flow equations and design charts for predicting the radial penetration of cement grouts have been developed.

The globally increasing environmental awareness which has manifested itself in the past few years also encompasses problems associated with mine closures. A crucial requirement for the effective planning, management, monitoring and control of mine closures is an information system which allows the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of proposed closure strategies, not only in terms of their local influences, but also of their potential effects on areas farther a field. This paper describes some of the closure associated problems and the establishment of such an information system from existing facilities, all of which are readily available. No modifications to these facilities are necessary, which enables rapid and cost-effective implementation of the system.

Since the hypothesis of coal and methane outburst mechanism based on elastic mechanics gives no consideration to time, it can not give a satisfactory explanation to the outburst occurrence and its development. A creep mathematical model of coal containing gas has been set up through creep tests and analysis under the condition of tri-axial compression. And the model can explain the phenomena of coal and methane outburst successfully. The tests proved that there is no essential difference between the rheological properties of prone outburst coal and non-prone outburst coal. Outburst can take place in any kind of coal if the rheological conditions of coal containing gas are met. The creep mathematical model provides a basis for establishing a comprehensive index of coal and methane outburst possibility.

The spatial distribution of airborne dusts, deposition of dust in the airway, as well as the effect of airflow velocity and particle density on dust behavior in mine airways were studied in a set of experiments performed in a mine airway under controlled conditions. Considerable deposition of dust near the source was indicated. Pronounced effects due to velocity were observed in ambient dust concentration and deposition along the mine airway, both in the respirable and the total size ranges. Cross-sectional concentration measurements indicate an increase in concentration from the roof to the floor. The average cross-sectional concentration is about 75% of the concentration in the center of the airway.

Surface wettability, or contact angle, dictates a number of multiphase ensemble interactions that influence particulate dispersability and adhesion behavior (e.g., filler compatibility] in addition to a number of other phenomena including biocompatibility and bulk powder segregation. The wettability of particulate surfaces significantly impacts nearly all process industries; however, the available techniques to access this quantity are either relative, or tedious-and are application or industry specific. In this study, key features of existing techniques have been combined to design an improved method to delineate particle wettability that is simple, versatile and capable of providing reproducible measurements in an industrial environment.

The present study examines the nutrients and micronutrients availability of uncultivated soils originated from different parent rocks. The study areas include four types of parent rocks with different geological origin, from acidic to ultramafic. The parent rock mineralogy and the nutrients available in soils are in strong relation-ship. Mineralogy, particle size distribution and chemical composition of the soil samples were studied jointly with the nutrient content of soil solution. High magnesium availability in soils of Anogia area is related with the alteration products of the ultramafic rocks. Potassium content of the soils exhibits no relation with the geology of the area. Micronutrients, iron and manganese, shows strong dependence to the bulk chemistry and mineralogy of the parent rock material. In contrast no interrelation detected between zinc and copper availability in soil and parent material.

Application of computer-based systems for ventilation process monitoring makes it possible to widen the system functions with those connected with long-term data analysis. It allows the mine ventilation engineer to carry out necessary preventive actions. In future the wide application of computers and sophisticated expert systems together with automation equipment (like remotely controlled regulators and fans) will allow to gradually introduce minewide systems for air flow control. To achieve this goal research work is carried out using data from a mine ventilation monitoring system and methods of computer analysis of time series. With the use of digital filtering the measuring signal spectrum has been divided into three subranges components of which are important with regard to various needs of mine ventilation staff as well as to monitoring and control system functions.
