An extensive review of multi-seam under-mining literature was conducted and a data base of case studies was assembled . A critical review of the design principles outlined in this literature resulted in the compilation of specific design criteria for the design of lower seam mines. Analysis of this criteria demonstrated the necessity for a protocol for the design of unsymmetrically loaded pillars. Such a design criteria was developed using finite element methods for a wide range of possible loading conditions. This design criteria can be utilized for underlying pillar design when the loading conditions can be determined. To facilitate using all the under-mining research results by field/planning engineers a Windows TM based software package was developed. This software package contains a multi-seam tutorial, analytical tools and a case history database. The package is user friendly and fully interactive and supported with extensive on-line help. The package contains numerous case studies of multi-seam mines that can be reviewed to facilitate analyses.

Disseminated epithermal gold metallization occurs within a breccia unit interpreted to be a submarine debris flow. Gold is associated with oxidized pyrite, fluorite, and jasperoidal silica. A minimum of 8 Mt (9 million at) of open-pittable mining reserves will be cyanide heap leached as run-of-mine ore at a rate of 0.9 Mt (1.0 million stpy). Careful evaluation of the combined results of successive sampling projects has established the pit plan, minable reserves, and process metallurgy of the operation. The sampling procedure utilized for a given test depended upon geological interpretation as well as the procedures, successes, and failures of previous tests. This paper summarizes the sampling and testing procedures of the development effort in light of the project goals and attendant problems in achieving them.

The addition of coal preparation plants changed the coal industry during the past. Now it is time co once again improve the quality and types of coal products coming from future coal preparation plants to meet the changing needs of our society. Clean Coal Technology, along with federal support provided, is forcing our industry to provide cleaner coal products for industrial applications. Liquid fuels from coal is just one of many new products from a coal preparation plant that has a ready market in the transportation sector. UCC Research Corporation is developing these new liquid coal products and this paper will describe the progress and the new slate of coal products to be provided from future preparation plants.

The University of Kentucky Mine Ventilation Manager (UKMVM) is a system that contains Level Five knowledge bases and comprises an expert mine ventilation management system. The package uses production rule language (PRL) to interpret data monitored from sensors, e.g., for airflow, temperature, and concentration of gases, in an underground mining environment. Activated from the PRL knowledge bases are Pascal subprograms which (1) organize the monitored data to set up emergency consultations, (2) display graphic representations of a mine's ventilation network with the latest sensor readings, (3) provide interactive updating of mine ventilation parameters, e.g., resistance changes, revised flow requirements, and new regulator and fan settings. Also activated from these knowledge bases are programs which (1) monitor airflow, temperature and gas concentrations from a physical mine ventilation model and (2) adjust regulator openings and fan rpm's. Thus, as an expert system the UKMVM not only presents advisory consultations for underground environmental emergencies, but also serves as an interface between the monitoring and responsive control aspects in the continuous maintenance of normal mine ventilation.

The Bannockburn gold prospect is a new discovery in Ontario's oldest gold camp at Eldorado, eastern Ontario. Mono Gold Mines Inc. of Vancouver, British Columbia, acquired the property in 1980 and in 1984 discovered a previously unreported gold bearing quartz vein system to the northeast of the old Bannockburn Mine. Extensive diamond drilling carried out since 1985 defined a quartz vein system over 475 m (1 ,500 ft) of strike to a depth of over 105 m (350 ft). Limited underground exploration by decline to the 22.9 m (75 ft) level in 1988 confirmed the continuity and tenor of the quartz veins. Gold occurs as native metal with minor sulphides and bismuth tellurides in a quartz carbonate vein system within metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks of the Grenville Province. Metallurgical test work on a surface bulk sample was favourable. Estimates of drill indicated reserves have been made as well as reserves based on the limited underground exploration.

Over 95 percent of the world's refined copper is now produced by electrolytic processes. The bulk of this electrolytic copper comes via the conventional route for sulfide ores of concentration, smelting and electro-refining. A rapidly increasing percentage of world production is now achieved using hydrometallurgical routes involving dissolution of the copper values from minerals, purification of the resultant leach solution by solvent extraction and finally deposition as cathodes by electrowinning. The technology can now be considered mature and this paper endeavors to summarize recent developments which, from the authors' perspectives, are important.

Thiele Kaolin Co. has invested much time and money in achieving and maintaining its IS0 9002 certification. Through a regimen of process control and documentation, routine audits and a commitment to quality management, this kaolin producer is a competitive pigment supplier in a worldwide market. Background In 1987, the International Organization for Standards developed the ISO 9000 quality management system. This series of standards is used as a means to ensure customers that a quality management system is in place. Certification of a company does not mean that an individual product is of high quality. Rather, it demonstrates a supplier's ability to meet its customers' product and service needs. It also shows that a company has documented records to assure product consistency. The ISO 9000 system was begun in England during the early 1980s. During the mid-1970s, the British manufacturing industry was experiencing low quality. In an attempt to boost quality standards, the British government established the BS 5750 standards system. In 1987, BS 5750 was incorporated into ISO 9000. The ISO 9000 series consists of three levels of certification. ISO 9001 is the model for quality assurance in "design/development, production, installation and servicing." This standard applies to companies that rely on research and development to bring products that frequently change to market. ISO 9002 involves "production and installation" only. This standard is relevant to industries that produce a specific product according to specifications - either their own or their customer's. ISO 9003 is the model in "final inspection and test." This standard is the least detailed of the 9000 series. It is also the most applicable to companies that purchase, inspect or sort and resell. The quality system requirements for certification are outlined in the 18 elements of ISO 9002. These include: 4.1 - Management responsibility. 4.2 - Quality systems. 4.3 - Contract review. 4.4 - Design control. 4.5 - Document and data control. 4.6 - Purchasing. 4.7 - Control of customer-supplied product. 4.8 - Product identification and traceability. 4.9 - Process control. 4.10 - Inspection and testing. 4.11- Control of inspection, measuring and test equipment. 4.12 - Inspection and test status. 4.13 - Control of nonconforming product. 4.14 - Corrective and preventive action. 4.15 - Handling, storage, packaging, preservation and delivery. 4.16 - Control of quality records. 4.17 - Internal quality audits. 4.18 -Training. Continuous improvement, though implied in maintaining these requirements, could potentially be included in the quality system requirements in the next revision. This gravity circuit at Les Mines Camchib Inc. consists of two pinched sluices to bleed a feed to one of two 76 cm (30") Knelson concentrator. The Knelson concentrate is upgraded to smeltable grade with a smaller Knelson (18130 cm) and a riffleless table. Their tails are column cyanided and washed prior to recycle to the grinding circuit. This paper details size- by-size circuit performance. The Knelsons recover around 90% of free gold (as determined by Mozley Laboratory Separator), even below 37 pm. The sluices are ineffective, with upgrading ratios around 2, but approaching unity in the fine sizes. Much of the effectiveness of the circuit lies in the high gold circulating loads in the grinding circuit, which partly atone for the poor sluice performance, and the ability of the Knelsons to recover free gold. Secondary upgrading recovers slightly above 99% of the primary concentrate gold, 90% of it in a 65% Au concentrate and the balance in a heavily loaded (10 to 20 oz/st) pregnant solution, generated by intensive column cyanidation.

In open pit mining every effort is made to maintain as steep a pit slope as possible. Pi t slope angles are influenced by numerous factors some natural that are amenable to limited or no control at all and other mining technology related where a greater degree of influence can be exerted by the engineer. One such area where control is possible is the method of drilling and blasting in the pit. This paper discusses the influence of blasting techniques on the economics of pit slopes and demonstrates how balanced blasting can be used with advantage to pit wall control and improve fragmentation (thus reducing material handling costs). Microprocessor based instrumentation to monitor drill and blast performance has also been described.

During the past decade, international mining companies have descended on South America. Countries like Chile, Brazil and Peru have seen billions of dollars in exploration and development funding turn their once meager mineral industries into mining giants that have become the envy of the world. Part of this outpouring of foreign investment in those countries has been because each has privatized its state-owned mining companies and has liberalized its foreign investment laws. In addition, they have rewritten their mining codes to encourage minerals development and passed new tax laws that have made natural resource development more attractive. Now these same international mining companies are turning their attention to Argentina. This a country that, like Chile, Brazil and Peru, has a wealth of largely un- tapped mineral resources. And Argentina wants its share of the foreign investment that its neighbors have enjoyed. With that in mind, ministers of Argentina's natural resource agencies came to Denver, CO to meet with mining executives and pitch their country's mining industry. The meeting, attended by about 200 people, was sponsored by the US Trade and Development Agency and organized by the World Trade Center Denver. Others involved were the Colorado Mining Association, the Colorado International Trade Office and the Secretariat of Industry, Commerce and Mining of Argentina. The following is a summary of a report on Argentina's mining industry. It was prepared by Anderson & Schwab Management Consultants and distributed to attendees as part of the meeting's program.

Mooranbah North is a new greenfield project in Australia's Bowen Basin that is projected to produce 4 mtpa of hard coking coal from a single longwall. Located in Central Queensland in Australia's northeast, this is one of Australia's main coal producing regions. From the outset, Mooranbah North's approach to equipment selection has differed markedly from that usually taken in the mining industry, and the conveyor industry in particular. Until recently, no performance requirements have been placed on conveyor equipment suppliers. This arose from a practice of purchasing components in an ad-hoc manner from a variety of sources, and the mine then configuring the system. More recently, single source supply has been adopted as a means of obtaining some performance guarantee, usually expressed in terms of system availability. Unfortunately, the term "availability" has a multitude of definitions, particularly in the underground coal sector. A conveyor availability of 98% is a common goal but this rarely means the conveyor must operate 165 hours/week, 52 weeks/year. There are mines that have one maintenance shift for each production shift and claim availability of 100%. What is meant is that no down time is logged to the conveyor during the hours that it is wanted. This "generous" definition of availability would not be tolerated in many industries and nor should it. Unfortunately, a true definition of availability, such as is applied to steam turbines in the power generation industry, is not particularly helpful. Five day/ week operations would immediately face a 28% penalty against 7 day rosters, and there would be no sensible manner in which weekend maintenance could be incorporated into the availability formula. The approach adopted by Mooranbah North was to specify a period of "Failure Free Operation," which would be followed by a maintenance period. This

Bromine is the intermediate member of the halogen family of elements between iodine, a solid, and chlorine, a gas. The name is derived from the Greek bromos, meaning stench. Bromine is the only nonmetallic element that is liquid at room temperatures, with a melting point of -7.2°C and a boiling point of 58.78°C. Reddish brown in color, it dissolves easily in water to yield a red solution. Bromine volatilizes at ordinary temperatures to a red vapor that is very irritating to the eyes, nose, and throat. Density of the liquid is 3.12, and gas weighs 7.59 gpl in standard conditions. Because the element is highly active, it exists in nature only as bromide compounds. Bromine was discovered by Antoine Jerome Balard in seawater bitterns in 1825 and began to find commercial applications shortly thereafter in photography, medicine, and dyes. The first commercial production of bromine was in 1846 in Freeport, PA, followed by production in Germany in 1865. OCCURRENCE Bromine is widely distributed in nature, and compounds occur in solution in natural brines, in seawater, saline lakes, oil and gas well brines, and in evaporite chloride minerals. The concentration of bromine salts ranges from 60 to 65 ppm in seawater to several thousand ppm in oil well brines and saline lakes. The distribution of bromine in marine evaporite minerals and in the solutions from which they crystallized was determined many years ago by H.E. Boeke (1908). Theoretical aspects regarding the geochemistry of bromine have been published in numerous papers (Raup and Mite, 1969). Bromine occurs in solid solution in carnallite and sylvite associated in potash deposits, in halite in salt beds, salt in oil shales, and in trona deposits. Its presence is useful as a guide in geochemical exploration. The analysis of small amounts of bromides in the presence of large amounts of chlorides is discussed by W. Schwerdtner (1963). Manganese, iron, and iodine may interfere with the determination. Other analytical methods are discussed at length in literature (Stenger and Atchison, 1964).

A detailed strata-mechanics investigation and examination was carried out in the E2 Panel (ML-II/7) of the XVI Bottom coal seam, which is located in the Moonidih Colliery of B.C.C.L., Jharia coalfield, India. Above this panel, the XVI Top coal seam was previously worked out by a longwall panel. Based on intensive field study and on experiments in a number of longwall panels located within various Indian coal mines, the actual behavior of the coal roof strata was evaluated and new strata-mechanics concepts around the longwall panels were developed. These concepts resulted in new methodologies concerning the behavior of roof rocks, caving characteristics, etc. within longwall panels and in the area of strata mechanics. Based on these new strata-mechanics concepts, a very simple, but realistic, model was developed to determine the optimum capacity of the powered supports. This model considered the combined loads resulting from the detachment of strata and composite layer blocks from the face and, also, loads due to the deflection of strata and composite layers situated above the detached roof rockmass. This formula, along with the other related formulas by the author, prompted the determination of the optimum capacity requirement for the powered supports to be used in the XVI Bottom coal seam, located under the worked out area. This new concept in strata mechanics and capacity requirements of the powered supports in a longwall face may be an aid to Mining Engineers.

INTRODUCTION The sublevel stoping mining method is usually applied to a relatively steeply dipping, competent ore body, surrounded by competent wall rock. Ore is produced by drilling and blasting longholes, which can range from 50 mm (2 in.) to 200 mm (7% in.) diam, with lengths up to 90 m (300 ft). Longholes can be inclined in any direction, but the ring or pattern usually forms a plane, and the holes are blasted as a unit. Recently developed mobile drilling and loading machinery, as well as new explosives products, blasting techniques, and cemented sand and rock fill have made sublevel stoping a highly efficient and versatile mining method. When designing a sublevel stoping production sys- tem, it should be kept in mind that production rates from conventional sublevel stopes vary widely through- out the life of the stope. Early production is at a low rate, coming only from the drawpoints near the slot, but increases as new drawpoints are reached by the stope face. As the stope nears completion, again, fewer drawpoints are productive. Enough drawpoints must be available at any time to provide required production. Drawpoint availability should be compared to equipment availability; plan for more drawpoints than are needed at any one time. Accurate, realistic scheduling is essential to smooth production rates. Also, initial recovery of ore in a stope/pillar block is normally from 35% to 50% in sublevel stoping. Planning of pillar recovery, representing the majority of ore tonnage in a production block, must be done during early mine planning. Since much of the development already done for primary stoping (access for drilling, drawpoints, and haulageways), can be used for pillar recovery, early production from pillars is highly desirable. The following description of components of the system is an attempt to highlight some of the most important features and requirements of mechanized sublevel stoping methods. Similar comments would apply to the use of older equipment (column-and-arm drill setups, slushers, etc.) in similar methods. As in any good mining system, maximum economic recovery of the resource in the ground is the primary consideration. STOPE DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS Length and Width The following are some of the factors which affect sublevel open stope length and width dimensions: ore body geometry, principal stress directions, competence of stope back, optimum drill pattern, and drilling drift layout. In new mines initial stope layout design may occur before the ore body is actually intersected by mine workings. Stope dimensioning is a critical decision, and assistance from as many knowledgeable people as possible at this stage is essential. Operators with past experience in similar ore bodies, rock mechanics experts, and others with mine design experience should participate at this stage of stope planning. Height The following are some of the factors which must be considered in determining stope height: competence of stope pillar and stope/fill walls; slenderness ratio of adjacent pillars; ore body dip; ore body thickness; hole depth capability of the drilling machine; fragmentation characteristics of the ore; and level intervals in existing mines. In competent ground, drill-hole length and accuracy are the most important determinants of stoping height. Frequently entire drilling sublevels can be eliminated because of the depth capability of sophisticated drilling equipment, resulting in significant development cost savings. Drawpoint Location and Design Some of the most important considerations of a good drawpoint system are optimum spacing of draw- points, within the constraints of stope dimensions, for uniform drawdown and maximum recovery; excavations designed for stability for the life of the ore block to be drawn-primary stope ore as well as subsequent pillar ore; floor or roadway design including type of surface, reinforcing, grade for water runoff; orientation with respect to the main haulageway, for optimum loader maneuverability and ground stability at the inter- section; and length, to allow articulated front-end loaders to work in a straight configuration. Careful drawpoint design and construction are keys to successful production. Extra care in development, such as smooth wall blasting, rockbolts or grouted rebar, wire mesh, and shotcrete usually will ensure long draw- point life. Human exposure during production loading is of longer duration than during development or production drilling, and consequently preparation of draw- points is easily justified, particularly when pillar ore can be drawn through the same drawpoints. Secondary blasting of boulders can weaken drawpoints, also justifying good ground control techniques. A smooth draw- point floor of poured, reinforced concrete, on a grade of +3% or +4% toward the ore pile facilitates water flow out of the drawpoint, and ease of loader bucket penetration into the muck pile. Slot Raising, Slotting A slot or other space for rock expansion is necessary in conventional sublevel stoping where vertical rings or rows of holes are blasted. The slot can be started at a slot raise driven by conventional raising methods, raise boring, drop raising (predrilling and blasting a raise from the top, using small diameter-less than 200-mm (7%-in.)-holes for relief), or crater blasting (similar to drop raising, but without relief holes). OVERVIEW Like many older metropolitan areas across the U.S., the Greater Cleveland area is served by a combination of separate sanitary sewers and combined sanitary-stormwater sewers. In 1966, a Master Plan was implemented by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (District) to minimize pollutant overflows into adjoining Lake Erie and its tributary rivers and streams, that would occur during wet weather events. One component of the Master Plan was to reduce the load on combined sewers by constructing new conveyances to intercept separate sanitary flows and convey them to upgraded regional waste water treatment plants for priority treatment. As part of a 15-year program to construct 74 km (46 miles) of new interceptors, the West Leg Interceptor (WLI) Project intercepts flows from four decommissioned waste water treatment plants (WWTPs), and conveys those flows to the new Southwest Interceptor (SWI), which conveys the flows to the Southerly Treatment Plant, a tertiary level treatment facility. The WLI Project was built in sections to permit decommissioning of the WWTPs as each segment of the interceptor system was completed and put into service. Flows from the first of the four WWTPs was converted to the WLI in November, 1992; the final connection was achieved in July 1994. The WLI comprises 9.1 km (5.7 miles) of 21 to 29 m (70 to 95 ft) deep mainline interceptor tunnel, four vortex drop structures, approximately 2 km (1.3 miles) of shallow tunneled connector sewer to the mainline, approximately 2.9 km (1.8 miles) of open cut connector sewers, five construction work shafts (not including one work shaft constructed under SWI Contract 6 at the north end of the WLI), and 15 access shafts.

Introduction Although innovative coal extraction technology can be approached from many angles, this paper focuses on three: innovation in response to rising costs, to changing mining conditions, and to regulatory issues. Before exploring these three subjects, however, a basic question needs to be raised. Why Innovation? Coal is widely heralded, and quite correctly so, as the United States' "ace in the hole." It has been said that the U.S. is to coal what the Arabs are to oil. The implication is that we have nearly inexhaustible reserves - that coal is cheap, plentiful, and easy to extract. Indeed, because our current productive capacity is estimated to be 15-20% greater than demand, we have been given a false sense of security about the ease of future coal extraction. Therefore, innovative measures are being concentrated on developing technologies for the demand side of coal, including power generation, synthetic fuels, and industrial applications. What is often forgotten is that the unit cost of producing energy from these new technologies depends critically on the cost of the coal feedstock -in some cases the coal consumed accounts for more than one-third the total cost. Thus, while the developers of the end-use technologies struggle to improve the overall thermal efficiency of their process by one or two per¬centage points to make the energy produced competitive in the marketplace, they often are unaware of the risk of a 3 to 6% increase in coal costs wiping out the expensive, hard-earned results of their research. Energy planners are just beginning to realize that coal is not a uniform commodity available at low cost in infinite quantities. Coal is a heterogeneous material whose cost and quality vary widely with local conditions. To produce the massive amounts of projected coal-based energy at reasonable costs, we urgently need devel¬opments in extraction technology, as well as in end-use technology. Thus, coal extraction, coal conversion and utilization, and end -use energy consumption must be viewed as highly interdependent parts of an energy supply network (Fig. 1). And current emphasis on conversion and utilization must be balanced by more emphasis on upstream technologies, including coal extraction. Even more important, the impacts of innovation (or the lack thereof) in any one technology area in the energy supply network need to be discussed and understood by those working in each of the other areas. Why innovation in coal ex¬traction technology? Figuratively, we are all in the "coal boat" together - geologists, miners, transporters, processors, power producers, distributors, and consumers. Innovation is required from each of these sectors to overcome the obstacles that prevent greater use of our most abundant national energy resource. All other links in the coal energy supply network depend on large volumes of coal produced at reasonable costs. Declines in productivity, therefore, must be reversed; the more difficult mining conditions that will be encountered call for new methods and equipment, and regulatory issues must be resolved if the coal ex¬traction link is to be a strength rather than a weakness in the planned U.S. transition to an economy based more on coal and less on imported petroleum. At Henderson Operations the 24-kilometer conveyor system consists of three main conveyors with lengths of 1.2 km, 16.7 km and 6 km. Upon commissioning of the conveyor system, the Henderson maintenance department was challenged with the inspection and monitoring of over 50,000 idlers. To take a proactive approach to idler maintenance, an idler tracking database system was developed. Using the idler tracking program, the Henderson Crush & Convey department now has the ability to provide data for engineering solutions to idler problems and to manage thousands of idlers for priority replacement work and warranty purposes. Recognizing the potential for injury to Henderson employees in the process of idler handling, Henderson approached idler replacement as a material handling process. Material handling solutions have resulted in failed idlers being replaced and discarded from the underground environment without ever touching a human hand. This paper will detail how Henderson tracks idlers in all primary conveyor belts and how an innovative idler handling system can result in reduced risks to conveyor maintenance employees.

The University of Alabama Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) has developed a unique process for selective fatty acid flotation of carbonate gangue from sedimentary apatites (francolite) in the pH range of 4-6 without collector conditioning of the pulp. The process, which does not require an apatite depressant, was modified to benepciate a high- MgO siliceous phosphate matrix from south Florida. The modified process includes two flotation stages, one for car- bonate removal and the other for phosphate recovery from the siliceous gangue. The selective flotation separation of the carbonate and phosphate from siliceous constituents of the matrix at various pH levels and collector dosages are discussed. In the carbonate flotation stage, about 70% of the MgO was rejected in the froth. The phosphate flotation stage produced concentrates analyzing about 31% P2O5 0.7% ? 5 MgO, and 4% insol. Introduction Coeur d'Alene Mines Corp.'s largest precious metals property is located in the historic Rochester Mining District 40 km (25 miles) northeast of Lovelock, NV. The property encountered cold weather operational problems soon after its fall start-up in 1986 due to its elevation of over 1830 m (6000 ft). The problem of ice buildup on the heaps because of sprayed solution application was faced immediately. It was felt that allowing ice to build up all winter long until a spring thaw was impractical due to the large area under leach. Further, the operating cost and delivery schedule for a solution heating system was unacceptable. The development and installation of a leach solution distribution system using drip emitters made efficient, cost-effective winter operation possible. Other benefits of this system have also been observed and are discussed here. General process description 15,422 kt/day (17,000 stpd) of - 1.27-cm (-1 /2-in) crushed ore from the three-stage crushing plant are delivered to the leach pad using 77.1 t (85 st) rear dump haul trucks. The ore is drifted into place with a D-9 bulldozer. Leach panels are contiguous and are approximately 8861 m'(90,000 square ft) in area built in 6-m (20-ft) lifts. New panels are built on top of older areas to a final height of 61 m (200 ft). Each panel is ripped and cross-ripped prior to leaching. Barren solution is distributed to the heap using drip emitters at rates of 0.02 to 0.41 L/min/m2 (0.0005 to 0.01 gpm per sq ft), depending on the age of the panels. The pH of the leach solution is 10.7 with a cyanide concentration of 0.75 kg/t (1.5 lb per st). Approximately 50% of the silver and 80% of the gold are finally recovered. Pregnant solution percolates though the heap and flows by gravity into one of two 9.46 ML (2.5 million gal) pregnant solution ponds. The solution is then pumped to a conventional Merrill-Crowe process plant. Clarification takes place in three 9464 L/min (2,500 gpm) capacity filters. The solution is then pumped to a packed vacuum deareation tower for the removal of dissolved oxygen. Typical deareated solution contains 0.7 parts per million dissolved oxygen. Precipitation of gold and silver is accomplished by adding a zinc dust slurry to the deareated solution at the suction of the filter press feed pump. Precipitated gold and silver are recovered in three recessed plate and frame filter presses. Barren solution is discharged into a 11.7 ML (3.1 million gal) pond where cyanide makeup occurs. This solution is pumped back to the heap for further leaching. The precipitate filter cake, containing approximately 75% dore (Ag + Au), is then fluxed with anhydrous borax, soda ash, sodium nitrate and fluorspar to yield a neutral, bisilicate slag. The fluxed precipitate is then charged into a propane-fired melting furnace and heated to 1150° C (2100° F) for 3 1/2 hours. Slag and dore bullion are poured into conical cast iron pots yielding buttons of 800 to 1000 troy oz. The dore typically contains 98.5% silver and 1 % gold. Slag is crushed and tabled to recover the trapped dore blebs and beads. Concentrate from the table is returned to the furnace. Table tails are sent to the crushing circuit and out to the leach pad. Solution application The area kept under leach at Rochester is approximately 130 000 m2 (1.4 million sq ft). Barren solution is delivered to the pad at 21.2 kL/min (5600 gpm) for a resultant application rate of 0.16 L/min/m2 (0.004 gpm per sq ft). A traditional solution sprinkling system using No. 12 Senninger Wobblers with individual pressure regulators was installed at the onset of leaching activities. The Wobblers were placed at 9.1-m (30¬ft) staggered centers and were fed off of a gridwork of Yellowmine plastic piping. Solution flow rates were moni¬tored to each panel. The onset of cold weather with an average nighttime temperature of -12° C (10° F) made it apparent that continual operation would not be possible with the sprinklers. A significant amount of ice was built up on top of the heap, making maintenance and pipe removal dangerous, if not impossible. Leach solution application was restricted to daylight hours to inhibit ice formation. Process plant flow rates were reduced to maintain steady-state operating conditions. However, as daylight temperatures dropped below freezing, ice continued to accumulate due to the sprays. Besides the obvious operating hazards brought on by the growing icefield, there was also the potential environmental hazard associated with an early thaw melting the ice too rapidly for the solution containment facilities. One other option for preventing ice formation was heating of the barren solution prior to spraying. Initial plant design allowed for expansion of the propane storage and distribution system as well as modification of the barren piping for a solution heater. This option was not exercised because the operating costs for an adequate system would have been prohibitive, and timely delivery of a system was not available. An investigation was conducted on the various drip irriga¬tion products available, since subsurface solution applicators would eliminate ice formation altogether. Systems utilizing external flow emitters were ruled out because of their ten¬dency to clog when buried. Emitter systems using perforated tubing were also eliminated from consideration due to their inability to adequately control flow over required lengths of tubing. An in-line emitter system was finally selected which demonstrated clog resistance and adequate flow control, enabling direct burial.
