The South African gold and platinum deposits were formed in very different ways and yet both have many similarities. They are flat dipping tabular orebodies, extremely narrow and located in hard abrasive country rock. The mining methods employed are also similar. Primary access is via shafts or declines; secondary access is via haulages and cross-cuts; and tertiary access is from raises. The proposed solution for rapid access described in this paper is focused on the haulages and cross-cuts.

The successful commissioning of the Cerro Verde project in Peru at the end of 2006 marked the culmination of the efforts of many in the industry over many years to have high pressure grinding roll technology recognized and accepted as a legitimate alternative to the conventional approach to large-scale hard rock comminution circuit design. Other hard-rock projects that have recently adopted HPGR include Freeport (Indonesia), Boddington (Australia) and Amplats Potgietersrus (South Africa). With the increasing acceptance of this technology, the need for technical presentations and articles exhorting the industry to adapt has diminished somewhat, and it is considered appropriate now to shift the emphasis to the provision of information for those considering embracing change. This article endeavours to answer frequently asked questions on the subject of high pressure grinding roll technology, with particular reference to its application in the hard rock minerals processing sector.

Among different pre-treatment methods, a high voltage electric pulse was recently developed and is gaining popularity due to multi-benefits such as pre-weakening along the grain boundaries, as well as size reduction to improve the liberation characteristics. In this paper, the pre-treatment using high voltage electric pulse of lithium-bearing granite ore was studied to understand the morphology through texture, as well as the friability of the particles. To understand the phenomena, SELFRAG, a laboratory facility used for generating high voltage electric pulse and key operating variables were varied. The role of applied voltage (94.5-195.5 kV), number pulse (3-87), and the frequency of pulse (1.3-4.7 Hz) was varied to understand the liberation characteristics as well as energy consumption. Characterisation tools such as optical, and electron microscopy were used to describe the pre-weakening phenomena through textural features. Further, the energy required to break the particle to finer sizes as well as friability were determined and described. The ferrite-pearlite microstructure is the most popular microstructure for alloys used in structural applications, including railway wagon wheels. These alloys have been designed through alloying and thermo-mechanical processing to have a refined microstructure. Ferrite-pearlite alloys are low cost, weldable, have good fabricability, and are reliable under extreme conditions. Given these performance attributes, it seems unlikely then that their dominant position as structural steels would ever be challenged by alternative microstructures. One major achievement in the development of ferrite-pearlite steels has been in the refinement of their interlamellar spacing to very fine distances of the order of < 0.3 µm. A refined microstructure increases the hardness of the alloy, thus increasing its life under wear conditions. The interlamellar spacing in pearlitic steels has, however, been refined almost to its theoretical limit. The increasing demand for speed and increased axle loading on railway wagons requires the use of stronger, tougher, and more durable materials. This has opened the window for the development of novel bainitic steels. Bainitic alloys have a higher level of microstructural refinement than pearlitic ones. They have shown to have good wear resistance and rolling-contact fatigue resistance, and high toughness. This paper will discuss the progress to date on the development of bainitic railway wheel alloys. Four alloy chemistries have been chosen for possible further development.

The project report is based on vacation work done by the writer at the Khutala Colliery during December/January 2009?2010. The purpose of this report is to explain and describe the design process in a multi-seam mine design for coal extraction at the Khutala Colliery. The multi-seam design will focus on the No. 2 and No. 4 seams as these are the seams that are currently being mined by underground methods at Khutala Colliery. The seam thicknesses and the parting thickness between the seams provide suitable conditions for designing a multi-seam mine design. An investigation into the pillar design aspects is carried out followed by a numerical modelling analysis of various scenarios. This analysis validates the first principles approach provided by multi-seam design guidelines. The design results from the analysis of the selected pillar design indicate sufficient parting for primitive conditions between seams, thus illuminating the need for superimposing in-panel pillars. This multi-seam mine design confirms the potential for the extraction of coal in a new panel. The design indicates that significant amounts of power station coal are present and suitable for extraction by room and pillar mining methods. The panel block indicates 401 625 tonnes of ROM coal. This block has a life of panel that will be mined just over a 4-month period. This 4-month period is assumed to mined at a production rate of 48 000 tonnes per month. Metal sulphides are usually semiconductor and their electrical conductivity is low; therefore they are sources of electrons and promote electrochemical reactions. This phenomenon is of significant importance in sulphide flotation. The formation of a hydrophobic surface on the sulphide minerals is the result of various electrochemical reactions. Potential difference in the mineral-liquid interface plays an important role in the kinetics of the reactions, and consequently, on the flotation behaviour of sulphides. The value of the potential difference is influenced by different oxidation-reduction reactions at the interface area, and is measured by a two-electrode system in which an electrode is applied as reference electrode. In this study, we attempted to measure open-circuit potentials of pyrite, pyrrhotite, and steel electrodes with respect to the reference electrode. To verify the results, two reference electrodes, saturated calomel and gold, were used. Time-potential relations with respect to both reference electrodes show that the potential of both pyrite and pyrrhotite increases with time; however, this trend decreases for steel except when at pH 12. The results show a potential drop by an increase in pH value, except for steel, for which the opposite holds. This paper discusses galvanic interactions between minerals and grinding media in the grinding circuits, as well as among other minerals in the flotation processes.

Pressure hydrometallurgy operations require vessels to be lined with an impermeable membrane for corrosion protection and one or more courses of refractory or ceramic brick. Examples of unit operations that utilize composite lining systems include pressure oxidation autoclaves, sulphide precipitation autoclaves, chloride leach reactors, flash vessels, cyclone separators, and direct contact condensers (heater vessels and quench vessels). The refractory lining must satisfy multiple requirements: it must thermally insulate the membrane from process fluid, be structurally stable, provide erosion resistance, be chemically compatible with process fluid, and provide an economic service life. New hydrometallurgical processes are pushing the pressure, and temperature with each new generation of plants. A fundamental understanding of all factors affecting the mechanical stability of the lining system is essential as lining designs move further away from the industry?s experience base. The method of designing a refractory lined vessel is examined taking into account the impact of irreversible chemical swell, operating factors, design factors, and installation factors. The effect of geometry and incorporating additional degrees of freedom to the analysis is explored using two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA). The effect of these additional degrees of freedom on the results of the one-dimensional model are discussed. Keywords refractory lining design,autoclave, finite element analysis.

Pressure leach autoclave circuits are employed in the leaching of ores, concentrates, mattes, alloys and intermediates for the recovery of metals into solution. Once the metals are extracted into solution, the value metals can be recovered by hydrometallurgical means such as by purification followed by electrowinning, hydrogen reduction, pyrohydrolysis, crystallization and other unit operations. In many of these integrated flowsheets the pressure leach step is pivotal to the recovery of the value metals from the host material. Furthermore, the autoclave circuit invariably is a high capital cost component of the plant and an area that is carefully scrutinized when debottlenecking and capacity increases are being considered. This paper identifies a unique proven way of increasing the capacity of existing or new exothermic pressure oxidative leach autoclave circuits by as much as two or three times.

"As geological and mining conditions become more complex, and as overall mining economics become more marginal, short- and long-range decision-making regarding multiple-seam surface mining becomes more difficult. The decision-making problem involves a study of economics, cut-off grades and ratios, equipment capabilities, sequencing and selective mining practices.This paper is concerned primarily with multiple-seam mining of bituminous coal. The research has led to the development of an economic decision-making model for use as a day-to-day tool to aid mine operators and pit geologists to decide what and how to mine.The model is designed as an aid for feasibility decision-making in multiple-scam situations and for situations where selective mining is needed or desired. In effect, a simulation of the feasibility and preliminary mine planning phases has been developed. The model is divided into four separate segments: decision-making, simulated mining, cost calculations and the determination of the discounted cash flow return on investment."

The metallurgical response of a difficult to treat coal and an easy to treat coal orebody were investigated in terms of the coal yield and the coal quality in a basic coal recovery flowsheet. The purpose of this paper is to show trends and derive principles for the treatment of different coal types. This investigation entailed using the LIMN simulator to simulate the metallurgical response by varying the plant operational parameters. The controllable plant variables investigated were: ?Cyclone size ?Screen and hydro-cyclone cut points ?Medium cut density ?Feed particle size distribution.

Definition of mineral resources and reserves forms the basis for effective mine planning and reliable public reporting of mineral assets. Historically, the mineral resource and reserves declaration process has been the domain of the geology and surveying disciplines, with the declaration of the reserves by the surveyor being based on the application of modifying factors to the declared resources available for mining. As part of an ongoing process to improve efficiency, reliability, and reproducibility of results, this approach has been revised and enhanced through the introduction of a revised process and reconciliation tools. The revised approach to reserve definition is based on the definition of scheduled resources, at an appropriate confidence estimate in the context of an approved business plan, over the anticipated life of the mineral asset being applied to define reserves. This planning and scheduling is developed, during the annual business planning process, by the mine planning department using tools such as CADSMine?. The scheduled area together with the application of revised modifying factors is tabulated in the BME (basic mine equation) and reflects the mine production plan over time. Simplification of the modifying factors to dilution and losses underpins the simple yet robust approach to improved definition of reserves in this process and in the basic resource to reserve equation (BR2RE). Dilution intrinsically affects grade but not metal content, whereas the losses reflect both the efficiency of mining and planning and are reflected in metal losses, area losses, or both. Reconciliation of the derived &apos;resource converted to reserve&apos; area (which is based on the business plan from CADSMine?) versus the &apos;resource available for mining&apos; (which is derived from Datamine?) underpins the robustness and auditability of the reserves declaration. This R&R accounting and reconciliation approach is transparent and facilitates interrogation of the logic and rationale of long-term business planning and project strategy. These numbers are processed and reported in the logic of the basic resource equation (BRE), which also addresses aspects such as white areas (future and historic), tail management, and partial extraction (non-scheduled pillars, etc.) in compliance with SAMREC definitions. Areas that do not have the necessary confidence and data support to be declared as resources find their space as pre-resource (outside the domain of public reporting), outlining existing potential for future extraction and reporting. Use of the BRE leads ultimately to a complete, refined accounting and reconciliation-oriented approach for all production entities. The revised resource and reserve process includes the discipline of mine planning as intrinsic to the definition and declaration of resources and reserves. Subsequent to the change in process, the resources and reserves have truly become the domain of the mineral resource management discipline. This paper defines the logic of the basic resource equations and outlines their application in the definition and reconciliation of mineral resources and reserves at Anglo American Platinum Limited.

The objective of this study was to develop, install, and test a small underground mobile refrigeration plant (MRP) to deal with some of the real problems associated with mine cooling in an operating mine. The requirement for cooling the underground environment is discussed with particular emphasis on the need for this method of cooling, with the concomitant benefits. The research investigated current methods of cooling and reasons for previous failures in MRP. Both static and dynamic simulations were conducted to increase the confidence level under operating conditions. Implementation and testing, resulted in ?lessons learnt? requiring modifications, which are documented. Actual results have been recorded. These results have proved that significant cooling via MRP is feasible. Main benefits include positional efficiency, cost per kilowatt of cooling and cooling opportunities for remote hot areas of a mine. Finally, a proven technology is now available for large-scale implementation in the mining industry. Now the ventilation engineer has another system of cooling, which can be utilized in the quest to create an occupational environment, which meets the physical and mental health requirements of the worker.

A procedure for designing an optimum pit to yield maximum profit is described. The volume in which a possible pit is considered is divided into discrete blocks, each of which is assigned an economic value equivalent to its worth as a block of mineable material. The profitability of a pit can then be generated by summing the blocks within the pit. The optimizing procedure starts at the surface level and proceeds downwards level by level, to obtain the optimum pit at each level. The method makes use of the fact that an optimum pit at a particular level must be completely contained in any optimum pit at a lower level. Procedures for generating block costs, and pits with various slope angles under the restriction of complete block removal are considered briefly. The main description is of the theory of the method and the computer program based on this. The method is applicable to any type of mineral deposit, the only requirement being that the orebody should be represented accurately by a block model.

South Africa is reliant on coal for the generation of almost all the electricity used in the country, and several large industrial concerns such as Sasol are also coal based. Research relating to the mining, beneficiation and utilization of coal is important in order to ensure the optimal exploitation and use of coal within the country. The Fuel Research Institute (FRI) of South Africa was established in 1930 to investigate all aspects of coal beneficiation and utilization in South Africa. The FRI went on to conduct world-class research and in 1957 a pilot coal preparation plant was constructed in Pretoria to enable large-scale practical experimentation. The pilot plant played a pivotal role in the establishment of South Africa?s low ash coal export project. Political and economic factors contributed to the eventual closure of the FRI and South Africa experienced a period of about 10 years between 1990 and 1999 during which very little public coal preparation research was done. This changed for the better towards the end of 1999 when Coaltech 2020, a collaborative research program was established. Participants included the CSIR, universities, the government and the major coal producers. Coal preparation research conducted under Coaltech thus far include dewatering and drying of fine coal, size classification of ultra-fine coal and dense-medium fine coal beneficiation. Currently, the Coaltech focus is on the beneficiation of low-grade coal reserves and is investigating existing as well as new techniques that can be utilized to provide cost-effective beneficiation of low-grade raw coals and reject coals.

The failure of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) results in the discharge of significant quantities of hazardous waste material into the natural environment. Research studies relating to slope instability have identified physical mechanisms such as rainfall-induced erosion, liquefaction, and shear failure as the main triggers. The generation of transient pressure waves and the mobilization of pre-event water in the unsaturated zone have been found to trigger shallow landslides in natural hillslopes. In this paper we review these physical mechanisms, known as groundwater ridging (GWR) and the Lisse effect (LE), from other studies. Previous researchers have explained both these phenomena through field and laboratory observations, numerical modelling, as well as conceptual discussions. These case studies demonstrate the impact of rainfall characteristics on the generation of transient pressure waves that rapidly increase the phreatic surface and change pore water suction. Reference is also made to the influence and behaviour of physical porous medium characteristics on the establishment of a continuous water phase that facilitates the transmission of an induced pressure head. However, previous studies fail to recognize the possibility that the pressure increase in pre-event water through pore air propagation could cause slope instability in tailings dams. The authors suggest that the physical properties and hydraulic behaviour of unsaturated porous tailings media make it susceptible to GWR and the LE, resulting in the creation of a potential failure plane.

Determining the most convenient plant location is one of the most commonly encountered problems in engineering applications. This paper presents a fuzzy multiple attribute decision making (FMADM) model which is developed for the selection of the optimum plant location for natural stone factories in the mining industry. The criteria affecting the decision making process in natural stone industry were determined to solve the plant location problem in the FMADM model. To determine the optimum plant location for a new natural stone factory, which is planned to be established by a mining firm located in the Eskisehir region of Turkey, an analysis was carried out by incorporating the method and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method. The analysis shows that the Yager?s method can easily be applied to the selection of plant location in the natural stone and mining industry when the difficulties encountered in the application process of the AHP method is taken into account. "SynopsisSilicon carbide nanopowders were produced using a microwave-induced plasma process operating at 15 kPa absolute and at atmospheric pressure. Methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) served as precursor, due to its advantageous stoichiometric silicon-to-carbon ratio of unity, allowing it to act as both carbon and silicon source. Argon served as carrier gas, and an additional hydrogen feed helped ensure a fully reducing reaction environment. The parameters under investigation were the H2:MTS molar ratio and the total enthalpy. The particle size distribution ranged from 20 nm upwards, as determined by SEM and TEM micrographs. It was found that an increase in enthalpy and a higher H2:MTS ratio resulted in smaller SiC particle sizes. The adhesion of particles was a common occurrence during the process, resulting in larger agglomerate sizes. SiC layers were deposited at 15 kPa with thicknesses ranging from 5.8 to 15 µm.IntroductionIt is well known that methyltrichlorosilane (CH3SiCl3 or MTS) decomposes to form silicon carbide (SiC) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) as shown in Equation [1]. When designing coal mine roof support, it is necessary to account for the uncertainties and variability that inherently exist within the rock mass and support elements. The performance of a support system is affected by these uncertainties, which are not taken into account in the current deterministic design methodologies used in South Africa. The key to the design of a roof support system is a better understanding of roof behaviour and uncertainties that can been countered during extraction. This paper sets out to develop a method that takes all uncertainties that exist within the rock mass and the mining process into account and provides a quantitative risk-based design methodology.

This study examined an alternative technique of extracting tungsten from wolframite ore using a fusion method with ammonium phosphate salt. Current techniques use alkali salts to decompose tungsten ores and use various purification methods to produce ammonium paratungstate, which is a key intermediate precursor in the extraction of tungsten. In this study, a two-step extraction process, which involves thermal decomposition of the ore using fusion and a separation stage, is examined. The novelty of this technique is the ability to completely decompose wolframite ore and form an unstable tungsten oxide phosphate (WO2(PO3)2) compound. The instability of WO2(PO3)2 in deionized water enables selective isolation of tungsten as insoluble precipitates of WO3 and WO2. The decomposition reaction of WO2(PO3)2 is influenced by the presence of oxygen and determined to be first order under ambient conditions. Scanning electron micrographs and X-ray diffraction analysis showed above 80% of the tungsten precipitated compared with the amount that remained in the filtrate solution.
