The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers, no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. LAYOUT AND STYLE Orthodox sequence Title and author's name, with author's degrees, titles, position. Synopsis. Index, only if paper is long and involved. Introduction, including a brief statement of conclusions. Development of the main substance. Conclusions. in more detail. Acknowledgements. References. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. The Institute is guided in its requirements by: Collins, F. H., Authors & Printers' Dictionary-Oxford University Press. Hart, H. Rules for Compositors and Readers. Humphrey Milford (familiarly known as the Oxford Rules). Fowler, H. W. & F. G. The King's English-Oxford University Press. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent that an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramme metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publicatiol1 of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. The Institute asa body is, however, not responsible for the statements made or opinions expressed in any of its publications. Reproduction from the Journal is permitted provided there is full acknowledgement of the source. The case for national research in mineral processing PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS given by R. E. Robinson*, Ph.D., B.Sc. (Eng.) (Wits.) Some of you have only raised your eyebrows, some have made tactful comments, and a few of you have been fairly outspoken, but all of you in industry are concerned at the high level of State expenditure by bodies such as the National Institute for Metallurgy. The case for a national research organization in mineral processing is not clear-cut and in fairness I must present both cases - for and against. Several possible physico-chemical properties of composite electrodes for oxygen evolution are presented to describe experimental data for which a mathematical model had been developed. On this basis, local electrical and electrochemical properties of a composite electrode were investigated with conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). It could be shown by CAFM measurement that the boundary between matrix and catalyst particles seemed to have special advantageous electrical properties. The SECM measurements showed the presence of mass transport phenomena with increased surface concentrations, whilst the thickness of the Nernst diffusion layer was very small. An intermediate was detected and assigned to be hydrogen peroxide. From all species involved in the oxygen evolution reaction (H2O2, H+ and O2), it was concluded that local active spots exist on the electrode on which hydrogen peroxide reacts to oxygen and protons. A two?step two-material process was suggested to explain the whole oxygen evolution mechanism.

A generalization of Gy?s 1979 model for the variance of the fundamental sampling error has been proposed at WCSB2?2005 by Geelhoed. This generalized model can potentially lead to a better correspondence with actual sampling processes. However, a new parameter is required by the new model: ?the parameter for the dependent selection of particles?(Cij). It is important that this new parameter, which is at the basis of the new theory, is well understood in the sampling and blending community. In order to clarify the meaning of Cijand to prevent potential misinterpretation of Cij, we discuss the difference between Cij and an intuitively associated, but different, parameter: ?the parameter for the dependent selection of particle types?(Mij). In this contribution, the theoretical difference between both parameters is clarified. Simulations demonstrate that, numerically, the difference between Cij and Mij can be large. Some additional advantages of the approach which uses Cij are discussed: (i) the approach based on Cijis more general; (ii) in all cases where Mij is known, Cij can be determined as well, while the reverse is not true; (iii) an equation already exists that relates the sample variance to the value of Cij.

Uniaxial tension tests were conducted on specimens of eleven granitic rocks which came from eastern Japan, and included a granite, four granodiorites, four tonalites and two gabbros. The axial and transversal deformability of these rocks was determined based on strain measurements using wire strain gauges. The experimental test results revealed that deformational properties of the rocks investigated varied depending on their petrographic features. However, the axial strain and the lateral strain characteristics showed a similar trend for all the rocks, i.e. the stress-strain curves were non-linear throughout the whole stress range from the initial point of loading to the point of ultimate failure. Moreover, the tangent Young's modulus and the ratio of the lateral strain to the axial strain decreased monotonously with the increasing of the axial stress. Still, the deformational properties were different for individual rocks in a quantitative sense. In particular, the difference in the lateral strains among different rocks was more distinct than that in the axial strains. For example, the Poisson's ratio at a stress level equal to 50% of the ultimate strength of a granodiorite was very low, close to zero. Furthermore, the Poisson's ratio of a tonalite was lower than that of a granodiorite, and assumed a negative value. This effect occurred because the lateral strain became positive as it changed from contraction at the initial stage of loading to extension at higher stress levels. There is no ready explanation for this phenomenon; it is believed, however, that it occurs due to microcracks pre-existing in rock materials and/or weak bonds between the adjacent mineral grains. Les essais de traction directe ont été conduits sur les échantillons de onze roches granitiques provenant de la région Est du Japon: un granit, quatre granodiorites, quatre tonalites et deux gabbros. Déformabilité axiale et transversale de ces roches s’était déterminée en utilisant des jauges extensométriques à fil. Les résultats obtenus à partir des essais montrent que la déformabilité des roches examinées varie selon leurs propriétés pétrographiques. Cependant, à partir des essais, une tendance semblable était observée dans les paramètres de la déformation axiale et la déformation latérale de toutes les roches; c'est-à-dire chaque courbe de contrainte-déformation était non-linéaire dans tout l'intervalle de contraintes à partir de l’état initial jusqu’à l’état d’une rupture finale au cours du chargement. De plus, le module tangent de Young et le rapport de la déformation latérale sur la déformation axiale a diminué de manière monotone avec l'augmentation de la contrainte axiale. Cependant, les différences quantitatives de propriétés de déformation sous traction étaient observées entre des roches individuelles. Particulièrement, la différence de déformations latérales était plus notable que celle-là de déformations axiales entre des roches différentes. Par exemple, le coéfficient de Poisson à un niveau de contrainte égal à 50 % de la résistance d'un granodiorite était très bas, près du zéro. En outre, le coéfficient de Poisson de la tonalite était inférieur que celui du granodiorite et a assumé une valeur négative. Cet effet est apporté parce que la déformation latérale est devenue positive en passant de la contraction dans l'étape de chargement initiale à l'extension sous les contraines plus hautes. Il n'y a aucune explication prête de ce phénomène; on prétend, cependant, qu'il est induit par des microfissures préexistantes dans des matériaux rocheux et/ou des joints faibles entre les grains minéraux adjacents. Einaxiale Zugversuche wurden auf Probestuecke von elf frischen, in Ostjapan vorkommenden, granitartigen Gesteinen durchgefuehrt, welche einen Granit, vier Granodiorite, vier Tonalite und zwei Gabbros umfassten. Die axiale und transversale Verformbarkeit von diesen Gesteinen wurde durch Verformungsmessungen mit Drahtdehnungsmessstreifen geklaert. Die experimentellen Versuchsergebnisse offenbarten, dass Verformbarkeitseigenschaften des untersuchten Gesteins in Abhaengigkeit von ihren petrographischen Eigenschaften variierten. Jedoch zeigten die axialen und die lateralen Spannungsdehnungslinien eine aehnliche Tendenz bei allen Gesteinen, d.h. die Verformungskurven waren nicht linear im ganzen Bereich vom Ausgangspunkt des Belastens bis zum Punkt des entgueltigen Bruchs. Ausserdem verringerten sich das tangentiale Elastizitaetsmodul und das Verhaeltnis der lateralen Verformung zur axialen Verformung monoton mit der Erhoehung der axialen Spannung. Dennoch waren die Verformbarkeitseigenschaften der einzelnen Gesteine in der quantitativen Wahrnehmung unterschiedlich. Insbesondere war der Unterschied bezueglich der lateralen Verformungen zwischen verschiedenen Gesteinen eindeutiger, als der in den axialen Verformungen. Z.B. war die Querkontraktionszahl auf einem Spannungsniveau, das 50% der Zugfestigkeit eines Granodiorits entspricht, sehr niedrig und nah an Null. Ausserdem war die Querkontraktionszahl eines Tonalits negativ und deshalb niedriger als die eines Granodiorits. Dieser Effekt trat auf, weil die laterale Verformung, als sie sich von der Kontraktion am Ausgangsstadium des Belastens bis hin zur Ausdehnung auf den hoeheren Spannungsniveaus aenderte, positiv wurde. Es gibt keine fertige Erklaerung fuer dieses Phaenomen; es wird jedoch angenommen, dass es wegen der Mikrorisse auftritt, die vorher im Gesteinsmaterial und/oder in den schwachen Bindungen zwischen den angrenzenden Mineralkoernern existieren.

A risk evaluation model has been developed that enables the quantification of expected injuries and economic losses resulting from rockfalls associated with a support system in a given geotechnical environment, which is described in Part I (Joughin et al., 2011b). Part II presents the validation of the risk evaluation model. Underground mapping of joints and rockfalls was carried out to provide data for field calibration of the model. This survey was limited to small rockfalls, due to the relatively short period of mapping. Therefore the model was also correlated with rockfall and rockfall injury data collected by mine personnel. The analyses showed that the model provides a reasonable estimate of the expected frequency and size of rockfalls and the frequency of rockfall injuries, but further work is required to enhance the model. Three case studies are presented, which show the benefits of improved support systems from both economic and safety perspectives. This work has demonstrated that the risk evaluation model and the software developed are immediately useful, but further work is required to develop and improve the tools.

Applying non-explosive expansion material (NEEM) is one of the safest methods for rock fracturing, especially in a hard rock quarry. An experimental study was conducted to determine the pressure exerted by NEEM in a hole, which is necessary for analysing rock fracturing, particularly in a numerical modelling. Stress distribution was developed in a thick-wall cylinder in order to measure the tangential strain on the external boundary. In the experiments, nine pipes of different materials and varying diameters were selected and then loaded internally with a general type of NEEM. Through electrical strain gauges, the tangential strains were recorded on the external boundary of the pipes. The results obtained from these tests and existing data from previous researchers were utilized for the statistical analysis. A new experimentally-derived formula is proposed for determining the pressure exerted by NEEM by multiple parameter regression with a high correlation coefficient. The proposed model has a nonlinear form with three independent parameters i.e. the hole diameter, the time, and the modulus of elasticity of the material.

Contributions to discussion V. E. Marting (Associate Member): The authors of this paper should be congratulated in having pioneered the application of the Sharapov predictor to local data, and in having made a valuable contribution to South African experience in the quantitative treatment of geological information using a digital computer. Although the existing set of three programmes has been described as a 'suite' it does not represent an integrated system in the accepted sense since the communication between runs is made in the form of punched card files to enable the mining engineer to exercise discretion and control over the data entered at each phase. Although the authors are justifiably proud of the successful results obtained through the application of this method, I feel that it is my duty to comment that the computer aspect of the work has not reached full development and is deserving of the financial support needed to increase its widest usefulness. At the present moment a routine to detect 'missing information' has not been commissioned. Due to the lack of documentation the use of the programmes is restricted since the format for the submission of data is known only to the authors. It is very unlikely that a profitable return on the development costs will be enjoyed before the programme is fully documented and made available to wider use. My criticism of the present incomplete state of the work is being voiced purely with the intent of focussing on the significance of this project and the fact that it is deserving of development on an industry basis. It should be noted that at the economical cost of R4.00 per sq ft of computer print-out, a mining engineer can hardly afford to miss the opportunity of using the programmes on other (e.g. metalliferous) mineral deposits of tabular formation. Since the publication of this paper I have had an opportunity to see the results of the programmes developed by Drs M. D. G. Salamon and F. Deist for designing bord and pillar workings. The basic data for these latter programmes are extracted from iso-line plans drawn conventionally by geologists, a task that could be considerably expedited through the use of Mr Hawkins' programmes. It appears that the efforts of these respective teams are complementary and it is in the interests of the industry that these individual components should eventually form part of an integrated system. E. Margo* (Member): This paper is a good example of how and where the backroom scientist-in this case the mathematical statistician-can aid the mining engineer to develop not only more accurate means for dealing with valuation problems but to develop a tool that can also cope with changed geological specifications.

SYMPOSIUM ON NICKEL The 'Gesellschaft Deutscher Metallhiitten-und Berglaute' is holding a Symposium on nickel on 24-25 September, 1970 at Wiesbaden, on the occasion of the G.D.M.B. Annual Meeting. Some 24 papers will be presented by metallurgists from many important companies around the world. VISIT TO THE COUNCIL FOR SCIENTIFIC AND INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH On 23rd June, 1970, members of the Institute visited the C.S.I.R. in Pretoria. More members had booked for this tour but the current flu epidemic caused cancellations which was unfortunate. The visit was organised with military precision, which prevented detailed discussion of any particular subject, but provided a bird's eye view of a large number of interesting projects. The visit was packed with interest for all and those requiring further information were invited to contact the relevant divisions afterwards. Or Denkhaus welcomed the delegates and stressed the importance of integrating research efforts with industry's requirements. An excellent colour and sound film was shown which depicted the work of the Rock Mechanics division. This showed very clearly methods used for preparing rock samples and demonstrated the machines and instruments for the various tests. It made one realise the extent to which this research has been integrated with the actual mining situation. The fullscale experiments underground showed the failure of pillars under applied loads and were very interesting. This is undoubtedly a film which all mining people should see. After the film the rock mechanics laboratories were visited where the actual machines were seen and described. We then visited the metal and strength mechanics sections where the metallurgists were able to see some interesting experiments and tests. We also visited the Aeronautics Research group where a large 1 000 hp wind tunnel was inspected. We were told enough about this to realise something of the complexities involved in the design and operation of a closed circuit tunnel of this type. The tunnel is used for tests on models which are necessary for the design and modification of aircraft. After a very excellent lunch at the C.S.I.R. recreation centre, the delegates attended two lectures-one by Mr. Mandersloot of the Chemical Engineering group, who outlined the varied functions of this group and told us something of their work. Of particular interest was the research into the suitability of various South African manganese ores for dry cell batteries. Work on the thickener settlement studies interested the metallurgists. The second lecture was given by Mr Donaldson of the National Building Research Institute. This Institute has about ten divisions each of which covers a particular aspect of building research. The work of the soil mechanics division was described in detail and illustrated by coloured slides. This was particularly interesting and demonstrated clearly how building failures result from lack of attention to detail of construction where unstable soil conditions exist. Cracks in walls of compound blocks brought the subject home forcibly to the mining delegates. This division has also caried out important work on sinkholes and sUmes dams and produced some positive results. Altogether the visit was most interesting and enjoyable. It was made more worthwhile because the emphasis was on the work being carried out and not on just seeing the laboratories. The Institute is greatly indebted to the C.S.I.R. and its staff for the very excellent arrangements made.

After the South Deep complex was purchased by Goldfields in 2006a re-feasibility study was done and the life of mine (LOM) was extended to 52 years. This also implied that the mine?s infrastructure would have to be enhanced. One of the changes was the proposal of five new main orepass systems to be excavated before the mine reaches full production in 2013. Excavations started to show signs of scaling, and in some cases, whole new excavations were lost. This particular area was exposed to very high stresses and the geology was prone to body delimination rendering the relevant areas unstable. This paper investigates the conditions at the location of one of the proposed orepass systems, and the best possible orientation was suggested to ensure that the orepass system would be stable and have a practical life. It was, however, found that the fourth leg of the orepass system would require further support to be classified as stable by the chief rock engineer and the section geologist of South Deep. Several support methods and orepass system linings would then be analysed and evaluated to give calculated recommendations on how to productively and practically support an orepass system. "SynopsisThe tetraethylammonium salt of the mono-anionic coordination compound mer-oxidotrichlorido(thenoyltrifluoroacetylacetonato- K2O,O’)niobate(V) (NEt4)[NbOCl3](ttfa)], has been prepared under aerobic conditions and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. (NEt4)[NbOCl3](ttfa)] crystallized in the monoclinic P21/c space group, with a = 11.483 (5), b = 12.563 (5), c = 17.110(5) Å, and ß = 100.838 (5)o. The complex structure exists in a 50.0% (NbA) : 50.0% (NbB) positional disorder ratio.IntroductionComplexes containing organometallic type ß- diketone ligands with O,O and O,N donor atoms are used widely in coordination chemistry and have applications in catalysis, radiopharmaceuticals, etc. (Schutte et al., 2011; Roodt, Visser and Brink, 2011; Brink et al., 2010; Otto et al., 1998). These ligand systems are very useful because of their highly coordinative nature, high solubility, and also due to their ability to be functionalized with various substituents on the carbonyl carbon atoms (Schutte et al., 2011).Only a small number of ß-diketonate ligands have successfully been coordinated to a Nb(V) metal centre, with only a select few being characterized by X-ray crystallography (Viljoen, 2009; Bullen, Mason and Pauling, 1965; Preuss, Lamding and Mueller-Becker, 1994; Funk, 1934; Davies, Leedlam and Jones, 1999; Allen, 2002. The synthesis and crystal structure determination at room temperature of mer-oxidotrichlorido (thenoyltrifluoroacetylacetonato- k2O,O’)niobate(V) {(NEt4)[NbOCl3(ttfa)]} was first reported by Daran et al. in 1979. Accordingly, for this current investigation, (NEt4)[NbOCl3(ttfa)] was re-evaluated at 100 K to determine if the structural features might change with temperature."

The introduction of new diamond sorting technologies as well as additional manufacturers I vendors, has increased the equipment selection and combinations available for recovery flowsheet design. This paper describes the methodology used and the benefits realized in the design of recovery plants by ensuring a fundamental understanding of the advantages and limitations of the technology embodied in the equipment, a comprehensive knowledge of the ore body characteristics, and the effective matching of this information in combination with operational commercial requirements.

PorterIn introducing his paper, Mr Roman said that whereas in manufacturing plants the yearly production levels were usually chosen to produce the largest annual cash flow, in a mining operation, the raw materials (ore) were exhaustible so that the production had to be scheduled to maximize the total net present worth of the operation. This optimum production schedule could be determined by using dynamic programming. The required information was readily available to management at most mines. The 'possible operating range' of production rates lay between the rate with the highest profit per ton. and that with the highest profit per year. The optimum production rate started typically at the top of this range and decreased slowly as the deposit was depleted.Dynamic programming was used to determine several production schedules for a hypothetical mine-mill complex. The effects of changes in the ore grade estimates, size of deposit and acceptable rate of interest on the production schedule were taken into account. Apart from the fact that the net present worth of the overall profits was larger than that obtained by conventional methods, it appeared from the cases studied that the amount of metal recovered was also greater.Dr it P. King commented that this was a very interesting application of dynamic programming. He pointed out, however, that the market price of the metal was likely to vary significantly and randomly during the life of the mine, and he suggested that the problem should, therefore, be reformulated as a stochastic dynamic programming problem.If the price of the metal rose to abnormally high levels, a much higher than normal production rate could be expected. The results of analyses given in Table 5 showed that the production rate was a function of market price. In his view the stochastic problem could be solved just as easily as the deterministic problem.In reply to a question by Dr King as to whether the function relating recovery to production rate (Table I) was based on real data, the author replied that it was based on the results of an analysis conducted at the Union Carbide Corporation's Pine Creek tungsten mine in California.Dr D. M. Hawkins stated that costs were incurred when the production rate was altered, for example, in appointing or laying off staff, and that in practice it may be necessary to take these costs into account in finding the optimum production rate. Mr Roman replied that, while normal administrative costs were accounted for, the additional costs incurred in appointing and laying off staff were not taken into account."

Abstract: In recent years, probabilistic approach with the calculation of probability of failure instead of a factor of safety against failure is emerging in practice. The main objective of the paper is to discuss a probabilistic approach in rock slope stability analysis for Himalayan conditions. Due to the fragile geology brought about by the tectonic movements along the hill slopes, dramatic variations of the topography and intensive surface runoff during every monsoon season, serious slope failures occur frequently in Himalayan region. Slope failures have also been triggered by seismic activities. The probabilistic approach is applied to stability analysis for a road cut along the Desander back slope of the Kali Gandaki hydropower project in Nepal. It is concluded that the probability approach offers a more accurate grasp of the actual condition than any factor of safety. Zusammenfassung: In den letzten Jahren ist es mehr gewöhnlich geworden, ein stochastisches Verfahren und eine Berechnung von der Wahrscheinlichkeit eines Zusammenbruchs statt einer Berechnung von Sicherheitsfaktoren zu verwenden. Das Hauptziel dieses Artikels ist das stochastische Verfahren in Stabilitätsanalyse von Gebirghängen, welches an Himalayische Verhältnisse angewandt worden ist, zu diskutieren. Wegen der spröden Geologie die durch tektonische Bewegungen entstanden ist und den dramatischen topographischen Variationen sowie viel Oberflächenwasser während des Monsuns, kommen in der Region des Himalayas oft mehrere erhebliche Abhangszusammenbrüche vor. Abhangszusammenbruche ist auch von seismische Aktivität ausgelöst worden. Das stochastisches Verfahren ist auch benutzt worden, um die Stabilität von einem Wegschnitt in dem Desander Gebiet von dem Kali Gandaki Wasserwerk-Projekt zu analysieren. Die schlussfolgerung ist, dass die Ergebnisse eines stochastisches Verfahren die wirkliche Verhältnisse eines Abhangs besser beschreibt als der Sicherheitsfaktor. Résumé:- Ces dernières années, une approche probabiliste basée sur le calcul d’une probabilité de cassure au lieu d’un facteur de sécurité préventif d’une cassure est de plus en plus utilisée. L’objectif principal de ce papier est de discuter une approche probabiliste de la stabilité de versants rocheux en himalaya. Due à la fragile géologie causée par les mouvements tectoniques sur les versants de collines, aux dramatiques variations de topographie, ainsi qu’au lessivage intense du relief à chaque mousson, de sérieux glissements de terrains se produisent fréquemment en Himalaya. Les glissements de terrain sont aussi déclenchés par l’activité sismique. Cette approche probabiliste est appliquée aux analyses de stabilité d’une section de route le long du versant arrière Desander du projet « hydropower » du Kali Gandaki au Népal. On en conclut que l’approche probabiliste offre une estimation plus précise des conditions actuelles que n’importe quel facteur de sécurité.

The copper industry is cyclical with the price determined by market forces (i.e. the balance between supply and demand for the metal.) The period of each cycle typically varies between 6 to 9 years. These cycles drive decision making for exploration, new project and mine development, mine closures, process improvement, research and development, and technological innovation. The gold industry is fundamentally different from copper in that supply and demand do not, alone, determine metal price and many other factors play a key role, including global and regional financial conditions, political stability, and the global future economic outlook. However, the gold price experiences trends and longer term cycles that similarly drive business decision making. This paper examines developments in the copper industry that have occurred over the past few price cycles (approximately 20 years) and explores how the lessons learned can be applied to gold extraction. A number of specific examples and opportunities are discussed in detail, including; technology development and innovation, cost control and business improvement, material characterization, comminution equipment, biological heap leaching, and concentrate pressure leaching.

Improving student success rates without compromising the quality of graduates is one of the biggest challenges expanding university programmes are facing in South Africa. By establishing a new Mine Design Laboratory (MDL) for higher learning in Mining Engineering, the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits Mining) has achieved one of the important goals in its five-year strategic plan, i.e. to improve throughput in all years of study. Although the establishment of the laboratory has been a costly exercise, results so far have shown an improved success rate in most subjects taught in the facility. This paper outlines the design and equipment of the laboratory, the facilities incorporated, a comparison with the old laboratory, and the performance of students?all of which indicate how important it is to have proper facilities to improve the teaching of, and learning by, large classes. Through this initiative, Wits Mining has taken an important step that will contribute to addressing the skills shortages in the mining industry.

Dr H. J. van Eck (Honorary Life Member): "Mr President, I regard it as a signal honour that I was invited to address the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on its 75th Anniversary. I also wish to add my congratulations and good wishes to the many you have already received on this memorable occasion. Seventy-five years is indeed a good age and the achievements of your Institute certainly justify this special celebration. South Africa owes her present prosperity largely to the technological ability and determination of her own people. Members of the Institute contributed in large measure to this great development of our country and through the years have upheld their high reputation for scientific integrity, dynamic enterprise and dedicated service. It was their knowledge which provided the key to unlocking the mineral wealth which lay dormant for countless ages. The history of world mining dates back many centuries. We know of the mercury mines of Spain, the tin mines of Cornwall and the zinc mines of Poland, but it was not until colonization of the western hemisphere started in about 1500 that mining of any consequence began in North America. It is true that the peoples of South America and Mexico had accumulated wealth out of gold and silver, but industrialized mining was not a feature of these agrarian cultures. The mining wealth that eventually developed in North America was based on advances in the technology of processing minerals and served as an incentive to people in other new countries. Big mines were opened elsewhere in the world. From Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Rhodesia, Australia, Burma and India, to name but a few, there has been a steadily increasing production of an expanding range of minerals and metals. By the middle of the 20th century the trend was to increase the production and use of such comparatively uncommon metals as cobalt, nickel, titanium, and others, and a great mining rush started to search for, and develop, the deposits of uranium, and related radio-active minerals. It is worth pausing a few minutes to reflect that most of early mining was based on the recovery of virgin metals like gold and silver or easily treated high grade ores of copper, tin and zinc. Today, much of this type of mining would be regarded as picking the eyes out of the mine. With the development of improved ore separating, ore concentration and recovery processes, we developed into bulk mining and bulk treatment and in South Africa we have some very big mines, also outside the gold mining industry at Phalaborwa, for instance. Mining techniques are applied which compare with the best in the world. These large mines could only develop because of the perfection of new concentrating techniques and, of course, because of the development of markets. We have mentioned nickel and cobalt. These names were given to those mischievous mining sprites called nickels and kobolds to whom the suspicious miners ascribed their inability to smelt copper from copper nickel or arsenious copper ores. In South Africa, the presence of minerals was known to the modern Western world as far back as 1497 when Vasco da Gama found the native 'strandlopers' at the St. Helena Bay wearing copper rings. In 1669, after the British East India Company had formed their settlement, they employed miners and assayers in prospecting for minerals and in 1685 found traces of copper in the copper mountain of Namaqualand where some 170 years later a rich deposit of copper was to be opened up.
