As is usual when preparing for this type of occasion, I looked back at the subjects covered by my predecessors when they assumed the presidency of this Institute. You will appreciate that, in the eighty odd years since the Institute was founded, the diversity of subjects has been very great. In almost all cases it is quite natural that the speaker should have chosen a topic of special interest to him and one in which he was particularly knowledgeable.

In this paper, the authors performed experiments in the Denver and Leeds laboratory flotation devices at the University of Pretoria at various particle sizes to evaluate the performance of the devices. Quartz was used in a single mineral system at discrete sizes fractions, -25 μm, +25- 45 μm, +45-75 μm, and +75-106 μm. Hydrodynamic analysis, based on dimensionless power and Reynolds numbers, indicated that the Leeds cell required higher power input to achieve comparable flow conditions. Specifically, the Leeds cell exhibited an average power number of 1.03, whereas the Denver cell averaged 0.77 within the same impeller speed range of 1000 rpm–1500 rpm. For comparative flotation performance, impeller speeds were calibrated, resulting in operating speeds of 1200 rpm for the Denver cell and 1400 rpm for the Leeds cell. The cells performed similarly at two coarser-sized fractions. However, some deviations were observed in the finer particle size range. The -25 μm (fine) fraction initially achieved a recovery of only 15%. An additional reagent dosage was required to enhance the recovery of this fraction significantly. These findings highlighted the influence of particle size on flotation recovery. For all experiments, the Denver laboratory flotation cell outperformed (defined by higher recovery) the Leeds device, while still operating at a lower impeller speed. This advantage can be attributed to its impeller-stator design and air dispersion features, effectively overcoming slurry resistance and resulting in superior flotation performance compared to the Leeds cell.

Due to the ultrafine particle size required for effective processing of chromite ores, dewatering of the concentrates presents a challenge. It is not uncommon for the ore to have elevated moisture contents even after dewatering, which must be reduced to required levels of between 8% and 10% by mass for further processing. Contact sorption drying has shown promise in test work on fine coal. This method was used to study the dewatering of chromite on a laboratory scale using 3 mm spherical activated alumina ceramic beads as a sorbent. Three different sorbent-to-chromite mass ratios, namely 0.5:1, 1:1, and 2:1, were tested with different process conditions, including dewatering in a stationary and a rotatingl bed. The experimental work showed that it was possible to achieve the target moistures in less than 10 minutes, irrespective of the sorbent-to-chromite ratio used. Ratios of 1:1 or higher, however, proved to be the best. The sorbent reusability at mass ratios of 1:1 and 2:1 were therefore tested. With a 1:1 mass ratio, the sorbents could be reused for three cycles, while with 2:1 ratio, the number of cycles increased to six. The sorbent-to-chromite mass ratio used had a significant influence on the required contact time and the reusability of the sorbents.

A theory for the dynamic balancing of centrifugal mills is presented that takes account of the mass and shape of the charge in a gyrated grinding tube and the way in which the charge lags behind the centrifugal force vector. predicts that a corresponding lag in the angular position of the counterweight centres of mass is necessary, and that the fractional filling should be increased if the ratio of gyration diameter to tube diameter is decreased. A worked example is given for a I MW centrifugal mill that was balanced adequately by the methods described.

(Member) The iron charged to the basic oxygen furnace at the steel plant of Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation has a relatively high sulphur content. Considerable emphasis is therefore placed on the reactivity of the lime. An investigation of the lime used at the steel plant showed that its reactivity had deteriorated considerably both during transport from the supplier (Northern Lime Company) and during storage and handling at the steel plant. The deterioration on the steel plant is the more severe, and is due to hydration and carbonation. Rapid deterioration is a characteristic of highly reactive lime when exposed to the atmosphere. Plant tests showed that the desulphurization efficiency decreases with a decrease in the reactivity of the lime. The addition of slag rich in manganous oxide to the furnace considerably improved the efficiency of desulphurization that can be achieved with limes of lower reactivity and with lime that has deteriorated. A decrease in particle size of lime of lower reactivity greatly increased the desulphurization efficiency. Less lime of higher reactivity is required for the same degree of desulphurization to be achieved. Lime of higher reactivity gives rise to slags with lower ferrous oxide contents and hence the steel yield is increased.

The incorporation of individual cooling in a compressed-oxygen closed-circuit breathing apparatus by E. SHVARTZ, M.Sc. (U.C.L.A.), Ph.D. (U.S.C.) (Visitor) and N. B. STRYDOM, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Illinois) (Fellow) A conventional compressed-oxygen breathing apparatus, which did not include provisions for dehumidification of the inspired air at high environmental temperatures, was tested at these temperatures with and without conductive cooling in the form of 2 kg of pre-frozen ice placed inside the breathing bag of the apparatus. The pre-frozen ice provided conductive cooling of the soda lime and of the chest and abdomen of the subject, who performed moderate work at 50,1 "c. Without cooling, the subject was exhausted after 35 minutes because of a wet-bulb temperature of the inspired air of 46"c. With cooling, the subject finished 2 hours of work. This was possible by keeping the soda lime at a relatively Iow temperature, which resulted in a wet-bulb temperature of the inspired air of only 42 °C after 2 hours, and by conductive cooling of the chest, which resulted in the maintenance of a relatively Iow heart rate and rectal temperature.

"Geometallurgy aims to improve mining project value by predicting the impact that ore and waste characteristics will have on mining and metallurgical processes. This requires integration of rich spatial models of orebody characteristics with validated process response models. These models have, until recently, been constrained by the spatial coverage and representativity of relevant data and the ability to validate predictions made.The revolution in the diversity and volume of data and computational power that is now becoming available for integrated geoscientific modelling of orebodies, and stochastic simulation of mining and mineral processes is accelerating. By embracing emergent integrated data analysis and simulation techniques, geoscientists and engineers can lead a transformation in the way the mining value chain, from orebody to recovery, can be conceived, evaluated, and operated by using the geometallurgical paradigm.This paper describes a methodology that is applied to an existing diamond operation. Analysis of spatial and process data is used to build an integrated geometallurgical value chain model (IGVCM). This IGVCM is used to generate geometallurgical options and evaluate their potential outcomes. The model facilitates the use of flexible, highly configurable, and potentially automated intelligent approaches to evaluate mining and mineral process configuration, and results in more robust design outcomes. The approach described here, and its successful implementation has potential to deliver step-changes in value. IntroductionGeometallurgy aims to identify treatability risks – and opportunities – that arise from the interaction of orebody characteristics with mining and treatment. Improved understanding of the rock/process relationships allows project planners and production teams to predict performance, identify potential shortfalls, and thus enable the proactive creation and evaluation of strategies to mitigate these risks. These advanced insights also create opportunities for continually improving operational performance through dynamically adapting and improving the process response to the changing properties of the ore (Figure 1)."

The reduction of fluxed and non-fluxed manganese, ores by ferromanganese silicide by W. P. CHANNON, B.Se. (Eng.), M.Sce. (Eng.) Wits. (Visitor) and J. B. SEE, B.Sce. Hons., Ph.D. (New South Wales), M.I.M., M.I.M.M. (Member) In South Africa, medium-carbonferromanganese is produced by the silicothermic reduction of slags containing MnO. Because of its importance in the production of refined ferromanganese, a study was made of the reaction between a premelted South African Mamatwan manganese ore and various ferromanganese silicide reducing alloys, with and without fluxing agents. Because the reaction is highly exothermic, temperature appeared to have little effect on the rates of manganese transfer to the metal and silicon transfer to the slag, and an apparent equilibrium was rapidly approached. Limits were determined for the favourable effects of fluxing additions, and manganese recoveries were found to decline as the ratio of CaO to MgO decreased as a result of the addition of basic flux. The recovery of manganese passed through a maximum, and subsequently decreased for variations in the ratio of alloy to ore. The results obtained, when used in conjunction with other physicochemical data related to this slag-metal system, suggest optimum slag compositions for the efficient manufacture of medium-carbon ferromanganese from Mamatwan ore.

Potential errors in XRF analysis are discussed and investigated with specific reference to the analysis of ilmenite samples. A selection of ilmenite samples was chosen and prepared using two XRF preparation techniques: pressed powder pellet and unroasted fusion bead. The merits of the two methods have been discussed in this paper for ilmenite analysis by XRF. Recommendations have been made regarding the use of pressed powder pellets especially with regard to the mineralogical effects that were evidenced during this investigation. The fusion bead technique was found to be far more accurate and able to meet short turnaround requirements provided the calibration methodology used is specific to the grade of samples analyzed.

Discussion I. R. M. Cheston (Visitor): I should like to congratulate the authors on this interesting paper which graphically illustrates the overall effects of the gradual developments in diamond concentrating processes which have taken place over the past few years. These final stages of diamond concentration represent only a minor factor in the cost of diamond production but because of the shortage of highly trained people for this work, any easing of the burden on the sorting staff has an importance far beyond the immediate economic sphere. The search for the solution of problems posed by the economic and social conditions of industry is never-ending. The Diamond Research Laboratory is, even now, carrying out further work to improve still more the operation of general diamond recovery processes as described in the paper. Before looking at some of the latest developments in this field of final recovery, there are a few points arising from the paper on which I would like to comment. On page 321, reference is made to the X-ray sorters originally developed by the DRL. The paper gives a figure of 100 per cent recovery of diamonds from +7 mesh concentrates in two passes through the prototype machine. Not wishing to claim miraculous powers for our group, I would prefer to see this given as virtually 100 per cent recovery of all fluorescing diamonds. Firstly however much care is taken, there is bound to be an occasional operating loss. In the test work, 100 per cent recovery was made on many occasions but this was not always so. Secondly, although most diamonds fluoresce strongly under X-rays, some diamonds only fluoresce weakly. Type IIB diamonds, in fact hardly fluoresce at all, but the incidence of this special type of diamond is very low in most deposits. However, in operating the commercial X-ray machines, there is a certain background level of reflected radiation from other feed particles. Unless the diamond fluorescence is several times greater than this, it is not possible to achieve sufficient sensitivity in ejection. A certain small but variable proportion of diamonds from each deposit is always found to fluoresce too weakly to be recovered by the X-ray machine. Tests have shown, that for the De Beers mines, this proportion is considerably less than I per cent. These diamonds are nearly all dark brown or black in colour and therefore of low value. The degree of fluorescence does not, however, depend entirely on the colour or quality of the diamond and some of the brightest fluorescence comes from the lowest quality of boart diamonds. Investigations into the property of the diamond which causes this low fluorescence are being carried out. On page 322 it is suggested that zircon fluoresces in the same colour spectrum as the diamond. This is not quite accurate. The total light given out by zircon under X-rays is of the same order as that of diamond. However the zircon radiation has a much wider spectrum band than the diamond fluorescence. Reference is also made on page 322 to the effect of selective milling in small laboratory mills on diamonds. Perfect diamonds are very hard and very strong and are extremely difficult to break. Imperfect diamonds, which form the majority of diamonds recovered from most deposits, although hard, can be very brittle. Even under slight impact some of these diamonds may shatter to powder. Milling conditions must therefore be extremely closely controlled to minimize breakage, and even so, some breakage will always occur. As suggested in the paper, the necessary conditions are: the use of small balls, slow speed mills and very limited water addition. Tests elsewhere have suggested that the water content of the pulp in such a mill must be less than 25 per cent by weight of pulp to prevent diamond breakage reaching significant proportions. The skin flotation techniques described on page 323 operate on a very small scale. It is of interest to note that in West Africa a large-scale continuous skin flotation machine is used to recover the fine diamonds. In this operation the feed is dried and, after standing, is mixed with water and fed in a single layer onto a woven phosphor-bronze conveyor belt. This belt runs at a shallow angle into a water bath and as the particles are carried through the air-water-interface, the diamonds float off and over a weir into a collecting box. The bulk of the particles, being wettable, sink to the bottom of the tank and are continuously removed. If treated without prior drying, the diamond recovery is poor. If material is treated immediately after drying, a lot of the gangue particles also float. During standing, in the hot and humid atmosphere of West Africa, it is found that the gangue particles recover their wettability much faster than the diamond particles. Optimum selectivity is obtained after standing for approximately 24 hours. At the DRL we have been experimenting with optical filters to differentiate between the fluorescence of diamonds and zircon. In the hope of finding out what the readers of the SAIMM Journal want of our Journal, we sent out a questionnaire with the October 1979 issue. The 2500 copies of the questionnaire sent out elicited 228 responses, which represents a return of 8,8 per cent. The number of responses received from overseas was 24, i.e., approximately 10 per cent of the total. The following is an analysis of the responses received.

Notes on Iron Age copper-smelting technology in the Transvaal by H. M. FRIEDE, Ph.D. and R. H. STEEL (Visitors) Earlier reports on Iron Age copper metallurgy and copper-smelting techniques in the Transvaal are surveyed, and a description and tentative classification of the copper furnaces are given. The analyses of furnace slags and sherds of glazed crucibles from archaeological sites of the Transvaal and the neighbouring Orange Free State pro. vide evidence of copper smelting there in Iron Age times. . An investigation conducted by the Department of Archaeology of the University ofthe Witwatersrand provided information on the details of furnace construction and smelting processes, on the composition of the materials used and produced, and on the making and handling of tools and accessories, such as bellows and tongs, needed by Iron Age smelters. Three models (the KaondejVenda furnace, the Rooiberg crucible furnace, and the Uitkomst furnace) were constructed and operated as a demonstration of Iron Age copper smelting as it was practised in the Transvaal.

SYNOPSIS This paper describes the process adopted for the recovery of gold from a dump originating from clean-up operations at Durban Roodepoort Deep Gold Mine. The gold-bearing dump material was refractory in nature, not being amenable to cyanidation because of the high level of carbonaceous material present. The laboratory tests on the material involved particle-size and chemical analyses, a mineralogical examination of the material, preliminary tests, and optimization of the process for the treatment of the dump material. The preliminary tests included tests on roasting, flotation, pre-leaching, adsorbent-in-leach, and blinding. Of these options, carbon-in-leach showed the greatest potential. The rate of gold dissolution, the rate of gold adsorption by the carbonaceous material, and the ratio of carbon to pulp were then investigated. It was determined that the ratio of carbon to pulp necessary to yield a reasonable gold recovery resulted in a carbon loading that was not high enough for economic elution and regeneration. A process incorporating washing of the carbon with cold acid between adsorption cycles was tested, and reasonable gold recoveries and carbon loadings were obtained. Durban Roodepoort Deep Gold Mine piloted the conceptualized process and determined that it was economically feasible. Two Browns tanks on site were modified, and an acid-wash tank was installed. The capital outlay for the plant was recovered within some 3 months.

"SynopsisThe development of plasma technology at Necsa started in the early 1980s, when the applicability of high-temperature plasmas in the nuclear fuel cycle was investigated. Since 1995, this plasma expertise has expanded to other industrial applications, for example mineral beneficiation, nanotechnology, fluorocarbon production and waste treatment, all of which are also of relevance to the nuclear industry.Necsa has demonstrated the manufacture of plasma-dissociated zircon, zirconium metal powder, carbon nanotubes, silicon carbide (SiC), zirconium carbide (ZrC) and boron carbide (B4C) at the laboratory and pilot plant scale. These materials are commonly used in the nuclear industry. Zirconium alloys are used as fuel cladding material for nuclear fuel assemblies.Necsa manufactured the monomer tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), using 150 and 450 kW DC plasma systems, from which the polymer polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was synthesized for use in filters and as seals in nuclear plants. With the nuclear renaissance at hand, it was demonstrated that plasma technology can be used to produce hydrofluoric acid (HF), which is used in the manufacture of fluorine gas (F2) for the production of uranium hexafluoride (UF6) directly from the mineral calcium fluoride (CaF2) without the use of sulphuric acid as in the conventional process. The recovery of valuable uranium from nuclear waste such as filters, oils, and solids with plasma processes will also be discussed. The destruction of low-level nuclear waste by a plasma gasification system can reduce the volume of this waste by several orders in magnitude, resulting in huge savings in the storage costs. Another product of plasma technology is the encapsulation process for nuclear waste and the production of vitrified product, which could be used as filler material for medium-level nuclear waste.IntroductionDuring the 1980s, a plasma research and development programme was launched at the erstwhile Uranium Enrichment Corporation of South Africa (UCOR) at Valindaba outside Pretoria. The main purpose of this programme was to develop alternative and more economical processes for the processing and manufacturing of uranium compounds used in the nuclear fuel cycle. The conversion of UO2 (as received from uranium mines) to UF6, which is needed for enrichment, conventionally involves several laborious, expensive, chemical processing steps. Plasma processes can eliminate several of the intermediate steps. Enriched UF6 is converted to UO2, which is pressed into pellets that are used in nuclear power plants. Plasma technology could also be used in a modified and optimized conversion process."
