Investigate the use and placement of lightweight concrete to improve ground control technology in deep mines where deformation occurs under heavy ground conditions and where there is danger of rock bursts. Approach Investigations of lightweight concrete properties and placement methods were conducted in the laboratory and in the field. Three test sections were completed: a monolithic, portal-type structure with integral walls and arch constructed aboveground; an underground test section constructed in a mine drift using plywood forms; and a test section constructed in a mine drift using an air-supported formwork. In the two underground test sections, the light-weight concrete was placed using a piston pump with concrete discharge line. A cooperating mine also used lightweight concrete, in the density range of 25 lb/ft3, to replace timber blocking in a raise preparation structure (the enlarged area across a vein where chutes and manway access arc placed). Other experiments included the use of precast lightweight concrete blocks in situations where ground support was needed, such as fur mine, ventilation doors, stoppings, and barricades.

The Bureau of Mines has collected field data and made laboratory investigations of trailing- cable performance in the hope of developing a better and safer cable for use with permissible mining machines . Because of their better insulation and performance , only rubber- sheathed cables were finally considered . The cables tested represented the product of six manufacturers . : After consideration of the results of the preliminary investigations , the conditions under which cables are used in mines , and the better performance of the later types of cables that were submitted as the investigation progressed , the bureau formulated a performance - test requirement and notified the cable manufacturers as follows : The hazards of the trailing cable are such that the bureau has been unable to extend beyond the machine its formal approval to cover the cable as at present developed . However , in the attempt to reduce the hazard as much as possible , cables passing certain tests will be recommended for this service and it is hoped that several cables will be developed to meet this requirement .

A preliminary investigation has recently been made by the U. S. Bureau of Mines to determine whether or not the ordinary mine- type telephone is entirely safe in gaseous atmospheres . Two well known makes of mine- type phones were purchased for this investigation . It is not conceivable that the current necessary for talking over telephones could ignite gas . However , such phones are provided with efficient magnetos , and it was believed that danger might result from the ringing of the magneto . Again , while this type of phone has been designed to have a certain measure of dust and moisture tightness , evidently it has not been designed as an explosion- proof device . either with regard to cover joints and fastenings or strength of castings . Therefore , the problem was simplified . First it was assumed that owing to the construction of the telephones the gas would penetrate into their interior , and the question was to ascertain whether or not the gas would be ignited from the operation of the magneto .

The paper, "An Electromagnetic Roof and Rib Thickness Sensor" presented at The 12th WVU International Mining Electrotechnology Conference in 1992, presented the results of roof coal thickness measurements in underground mines and rib coal thickness measurements in highwall mines. The microwave sensor described uses a unique spatial modulation scheme created by antenna motion, along with frequency domain signal processing, to solve the problem of media, target, and antenna dispersion. This paper further describes the advantages of the unique frequency domain signal processing technology chosen by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in extending previously reported one-dimensional thickness measurement technology to the generation of a full three-dimensional underground image of the underground environment. The electromagnetic signature of a media, whether it is coal or other geological material, is its permeability and permittivity and the effect on the velocity and amplitude of an electromagnetic wave as it passes through. High-quality imaging cannot occur without the identification of, and correction for, the permittivity and permeability of each layer of a multilayer geological deposit. Clutter, or any signal that can interfere with target discrimination, usually comes from objects in the field of view for which there is no design control. These are nuisance targets with possibly very high contrasts compared to the real target. The only proven tool to reduce clutter is to increase spatial, spectral, and polarization diversity. This paper will describe some techniques being used by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to increase the information content of both single-dimensional and three-dimensional imaging systems through the identification of media distortion mechanisms made possible by the use of spatial/spectral sensor technology. These techniques will permit high quality imaging in an environment where the data is corrupted by dispersion and clutter.

MFIRE is more flexible and provides more error checking, and more informational messages about prob¬lems with input files than its predecessor, the MTU-BOM code The desirable features of the MTU-BOM code such as calculation and identification of recirculation, the air to rock heat exchange, and the basing of calculations on mass flow rates have been retained. A medium-frequency (MF) communication system has been built and has been tested in underground mines. It provides radio coverage to vehicles and personnel anywhere in the mine via parasitic coupling into existing mine conductors. The system consists of base stations, repeaters, and vehicular and personnel transceivers. Air-core antennas for vehicles and clamp-on antennas for base stations and repeaters were designed for maximum coupling efficiency using existing mine wiring. Personnel transceivers are of a unique vest design that features a low physical profile, good user comfort, and efficient antenna design. In-mine tests show impressive results. Range between rubber-tired vehicles and base stations is often measured in miles. With repeaters, greater range is possible.

A training software package for new mine employees, called Miner Training Simulator (MTS), has been developed by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. MTS is a computer-based tool that allows a trainee to enter a simulated mine and interact with his/her surroundings in order to learn basic mining concepts, safety procedures, mine layouts, and escape routes. The training simulator software and instructions for its use are described in this report. Also, each mine using the software will have different requirements with regard to safety training. To customize the simulator for these differences, an interpreted scripting language is used to define interactions between the trainee and the virtual mine and objects in it. The scripting language, called Tool Command Language, uses simple commands to control various actions in the simulation, such as sounds, safety messages, hazards, and movement of objects. The basics of the scripting language are described here, along with many examples and instructions for building a script for MTS.

This paper summarizes fly rock and blast area security fatalities from 1989 to 1999 and examines the causative factors. Coal and nonmetal mining used about 43 billion pounds of explosives and blasting agents between1989 to 1999. A majority of this consumption was used at surface mines. Accident data indicates that fly rock and lack of blast area security were the primary causes of blasting related injuries in surface mining. Fatal injuries due to lack of blast area security were attributed to: failure to clear blast area; failure to follow instructions; inadequate guarding; inadequate blasting shelter; and unsafe location. Seven fatalities due to fly rock and lack of blast area security were reported in surface coal mines and six in nonmetal mines. Out of these, two fatalities (one each in coal and nonmetal mines) occurred outside the mine property. In the coal mining sector, two fatalities were attributed to fly rock, and five to lack of blast area security. In the nonmetal mining sector, three fatalities were attributed to fly rock, and three to lack of blast area security. Preventive measures include: ensuring that all personnel have evacuated the blast area during shot firing; using adequate blasting shelters for employees whose presence is required in the blast area; controlling and monitoring all entrances to the blast area; ensuring that the blast is properly designed, drilled, and loaded; and emphasizing education and training to enhance skill levels for implementation of engineering control techniques.

The behaviour of wire ropes used in mine hoisting is not well understood. In an effort to improve this understanding, the structure of round-strand wire ropes was analysed. This report provides a generalised mathematical model that completely describes the geometry of the wires. It consists of two sets of vector equations and is valid for any round-strand wire rope. One set of equations is used to trace the paths of wires that have the form of a single helix. The other is used for the paths of double helical wires. The specific model for a 33-mm 6x1 9 Seale, IWRC, right regular lay wire rope was presented as an example. The paths and the geometric properties of the wires which include the path length per lay of strand, the curvature, and the torsion were determined from this model. In future work, the model could be used to conduct stress analysis for the wires in the deformed rope at a given rope strain and also to study the effect of wear and breaking of wires on strength loss for the various round-strand wire ropes used in mine hoisting.

This paper is an overview of and introduction to the subject of dust explosions. The purpose is to provide information on the explosibility and ignitability properties of dust clouds that can be used to improve safety in industries that generate, process, use, or transport combustible dusts. The requirements for a dust explosion are: a combustible dust, dispersed in air, a concentration above the flammable limit, the presence of a sufficiently energetic ignition source, and some confinement. An explosion of a fuel in air involves the rapid oxidation of combustible material, leading to a rapid increase in temperature and pressure. The violence of an explosion is related to the rate of energy release due to chemical reactions relative to the degree of confinement and heat losses. The combustion properties of a dust depend on its chemical and physical characteristics, especially its particle size distribution. In this paper, the explosion characteristics of combustible dusts will be compared and contrasted with those of flammable gases using methane as an example. These characteristics include minimum explosible concentration, maximum explosion pressure, maximum rate of pressure rise, limiting oxygen concentration, ignition temperature, and amount of inert dust necessary to prevent flame propagation. The parameters considered include the effects of dust volatility, dust particle size, turbulence, initial pressure, initial temperature, and oxygen concentration. Both carbonaceous and metal dusts will be used as examples. The goal of this research is to better understand the fundamental aspects of dust explosions.

Electron spin resonance measurements have now been completed on the decay kinetics of the organic free radicals formed on crushing or grinding of a well characterized anthracite coal. The free radicals exhibit a complex decay pattern for the first few hours after the grinding, and a smooth decay thereafter. Parallel hemolysis studies indicate. a half-life of the decrease in the cytotoxicity of the fresh· dust to be about half-a-day. The cytotoxicity of the freshly-made dust decreases on addition of superoxide dismutase, catalase and sodium benzoate. The hemolysis rate is lower for the dust stored in buffers as compared to air. A chemical model will be presented to accomodate the cytotoxicity and spectroscopic data, and ~heir implicati6ns to pneumoconiosis.

For all coal mining categories, data on coal mine fires during 1990-1999 have been reported as actual numbers and calculated values. 1. For each mining category, actual numbers include the total number of fires, fire injuries, employees' working hours, lost workdays, and coal production (for underground and surface mines only) for a 1 0-year period (1 990- 1999) and for five successive 2-year periods with the 10-year period. These numbers have also been reported by state ( 10-year period). The actual number of fire fatalities has been reported by time period. Furthermore, actual numbers of fires for the five 2-year periods have been reported by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material. Actual numbers of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires have been reported by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location. 2. For each mining category, the calculated values include the fire and injury risk rates during the 10-year period and the five 2-year periods. The fire risk rate (Frr) values were calculated according to the USBM formula [Pornroy and Carigiet 19951. The injury risk rate (Irr) values were calculated according to the MSHA formula [MSHA 1991a, 1992, 1993, 1994a, 1995a, 1996, 1997, 1998b, 1999c, 20001. Also, risk rate values for individual states (10-year period) were calculated according to the above-mentioned formulas. Of note is that only the risk rate values for the 10-year and five 2-year periods and risk rate values for individual states with the highest number of fires and fue injuries were considered for comparison purposes. The fatality risk rate values were not calculated because of the extremely small number of fire fatalities during the 1 0-year period. 3. Calculations of risk rate values are as follows: a. Fire risk rate (Frr) value: Number of fires per million tons of coal produced [Pornroy and Carigiet 19951. b. Injury risk rate (Irr) value: Number of fire injuries multiplied by 200,000 working hours per total employees' working hours [MSHA 1991a, l992,1993,1994a, 1995a, 1996, 1997, 1998b, 1999c, 20001. The Irr value is the average risk rate value for the number of fire injuries per 200,000 working hours for a given time period.

Pulmonary inflammation is accompanied by increased microvascular permeability and leakage of plasma into alveolar spaces. Serum has been shown to affect superoxide (O2-) production from pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) in vitro, and in some cases serum has been shown to be necessary for stimulation of PAM. An electro-optical method was used to measure O2- production from single PAM by measuring the reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate (NBTH2) from videorecorded images of individual cells. PAM were stimulated by their initial attachment to culture dishes independent of serum. The addition of 2% serum to the culture medium increased NBTH2 production during attachment, whereas concentrations of 5 and 10% serum had no additional effect. In contrast, PAM incubated for 2 hrs could not be stimulated by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) or zymosan particles to produce O2- unless serum was present during the incubation and/or stimulation; however, NBTH production was similar in all cases of serum addition. Also2, serum alone did not stimulate adherent PAM indicating that serum is necessary but not sufficient for stimulation of attached. PAM. These results suggest that changes in microcirculatory permeability may have a pronounced effect on superoxide production by PAM and that serum may help regulate or condition these cells during inflammation of the lung. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard ISO 2631 [1,2] provides three methods for evaluation of human exposure to vibrations that contain occasional shocks or impacts. Part 1 of the standard specifies the running r.m.s. or maximum transient vibration method (MTVV) and the fourth power vibration dose value (VDV). Part 5 of the standard provides a method of computing the stress in the lumbar spine for humans exposed to multiple shocks. Alem et al [3] have reported application of these methods to data for tactical ground vehicles. This paper reports and compares VDV and spinal stress evaluations of more than 90 hours of vibration and shock measurements on North American locomotives engaged in through freight operations. The measurements evaluated in this paper were obtained for full crew shifts on 19 freight locomotive runs on mainline track in locations from New York to California. The shifts ranged in duration from 187 minutes to 497 minutes. The average speeds for the shifts were from 21.0 mph to 54.6 mph. All measurements were made on locomotives hauling freight trains in regular revenue service. Data Acquisition and Processing The results reported here were computed using test data acquired from a tri-axial seat pad, accelerometer at a sample rate of 400Hz with an anti-aliasing filter corner frequency of 100Hz. The VDVs and the lateral and longitudinal spinal stress values were computed directly from the acquired test data according to the procedures specified and described in [1] and [2]. The vertical spinal stress values were computed by converting the as-acquired test data to a sample rate of 160Hz for input to the vertical spine model, as required in [2]. The conversion of the test data from the as-acquired sample rate of 400Hz to the required sample rate of 160Hz involved up sampling or interpolating the test data to an equivalent sample rate of 800Hz, band limiting the resultant data with a low-pass filter corner frequency of 60Hz and finally down sampling or decimating the 800Hz data to a sample frequency of 160Hz. Discussion The vertical VDVs computed according to [2] for the 19 shifts ranged from 2.68 to 9.33 m/s1.75. In all but one case, the vertical values were greater than the values for the lateral or longitudinal directions. Note that the health guidance in [1] puts the lower boundary of the health guidance caution zone at a VDV value of 8.5 and the upper boundary at 17 m/s1.75. The daily equivalent static compression dose computed following [2] ranged from 0.123 to 0.434 MPa. Health guidance provided in [2] states that there is a low probability of an adverse health effect if the daily dose is less than 0.5 MPa.

In certain populations, nonspecific airway hyperreactivity (HR) is associated with increased respiratory symptoms and decreased lung function. We analyzed standardized pulmonary symptom questionnaires and pre-shift spirometry with methacholine inhalation challenge (Chatham, M. et al, Chest 82: 15) on 228 control workers (C) with no known exposure to occupational hazards, and 200 underground bituminous coal miners (M). M and c were similar in age, height, sex, and smoking status. HR (defined as >15% fall in FEVI after up to 5 vital capacity breaths of 25mg% methacholine) was found in 25% of M and 28% of C (NS). M showed higher% predicted FEVI (%PFEV) than c (M 107%, C 104%*). 28% of current smokers showed HR versus 22% of never smokers (NS). Current smokers showed reduced %PFEV but were not different from lifelong non-smokers regarding prevalence of HR. Subjects with HR showed reduced %PFEV, (HR 101%, not HR 107%*) but M and c with HR showed similar reductions. M had more dyspnea and chronic cough than c*. Hyperreactivity was associated with increased symptoms in controls but not miners. In our study, the prevalence of HR in coal miners was similar to nonminers, and did not explain miners' respiratory symptoms. * P < 0.05

"Bit wear presents problems to mining operations because it affects both productivity and economics. Most bit research deals with energy requirements and energy dissipation mechanics for ideal fragmentation during the cutting process.Mechanical cutting leads to dust generation. Past studies involving dust generation due to bit wear concluded that dust concentrations increased considerably after a 7% bit weight loss: leading researchers recommend that the bits be changed at that point.Bit wear is affected by three factors: machine operating parameters in-situ mining conditions and rock properties. Operating parameters such as the depth of cut tool material spray position and the drum's rotating velocity are very important and have a definite impact on bit wear.During the mining process the amount of rock in coal and the strength of that rock is important as abrasion and adhesion take affect. Diffusive wear or deformation becomes dominant only when the temperatures exceed critical. Temperatures rise as a function of drum velocity rock properties and the cutting tool itself.Miner bit surveyIn this study, 15 mines were surveyed, and of those six responded for nine seams. The survey reflected a wide range of information about coal production and bit consumption from continuous miner sections. Also used bits were collected to get first-hand information to analyze wear."

This supplement has been prepared to furnish information on amendments to the regulations that were approved by acting secretary of the Interior on June 24, 1946, while this report was in the press. Page 14, item 2, and page 20, item 4, have been amended by the addition of the following footnote: "Pending the development of a satisfactory multiple-shot permissible blasting unit, a blasting unit of Type II, Class A, covered by Federal Specification WB 411, December 31, 1941 (with or without Amendment 2, June 16, 1945), may be used until Decem- ber 31, 1947. Should a satisfactory multiple-shot permissible unit be made available prior to that date, this interim approval may be terminated." Page 14, footnote / has been amended to read as follows: "The use of charges over 1-1/2 pounds and not exceeding 3 pounds is approved pending further investigation. The approval, which may be withdrawn at any time, expires December 31, 1947, unless renewed. For charges over 1-1/2 pounds, the following additional requirements must be observed: (1) Shot holes must be 6 feet or greater in length. (2) Explosives must be charged in a continuous train with no cartridges deliberately deformed or crushed, with all car- tridges in contact with each other, and with the end cartridges touching the rear of the hole and the stemming, respectively. (3) The permissible explosive must be one showing toxic gas omission that will place it in either Class A or Class B."
