1. The investigation shows that the Sewanee coal bed is the most important bed in Grundy County arid is the only bed that has had any sustained production. There is no production, at the present time, from any of the other coal beds in the county. The Richland (Lower Sewanee or Coke Oven) coal bed has been prospected but has never been developed extensively. The Angel coal bed has been worked to a very small extent near Beersheba Springs, Tenn., for local consumption. The Battle Creek coal bed has been worked sporadically near Monteagle, Tenn. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in the Sewaneee coal bed, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 15 millon short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 10 million tons represents coal 28 inches and more thick. Areas in the bed were omitted from the estimate where available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

An examination of the physical properties of manganese ores is being made at the Mississippi. Valley Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Missouri. The object of the study is to find out how much these ores can be beneficiated by such processes as jigging, tabling, magnetic separation, and flotation. Some. of the results were given in an earlier report.4 Eighty samples obtained from various prospects and mines throughout the country have been examined; this is a very small part of those that should be examined before the work can be a definite factor in-the appraisal of manganese ores or the guide in beneficiation which the operators seek. The ore deposits are not expected to reach to great depths vertically, after the manner of copper and gold, but in lateral distribution their greater extent is notable. This applies particularly to the residual and replacement deposits of manganese.

"Three men lost their lives in the Black Diamond Coal Mine near Seattle, Wash., recently while wearing oxygen breathing apparatus. The press dispatches stated that these men lost their lives while practicing with the apparatus. Later reports stated that the men died while attempting to make a trip 1200 feet down a 25 degree slope which was filled with black damp, in order to measure the amount of water that had accumulated at the bottom of the mine, and the trip was attempted with oxygen in the tanks of the apparatus with dials indicating only 45 minutes supply. The oxygen in the tank was used up and the men therefore lost their lives from a deficiency of air to breathe.In spite of all the education and training done by the Government to prevent accidents, men are prone occasionally to take unnecessary chances. Every piece of apparatus, no matter how perfect, has its limitations. The Government, through the agency of the Bureau of Mines, has trained many thousands of miners in the use of mine rescue apparatus. The training has been given to all miners who requested it, and the Bureau has gone to the extreme of urging miners to join the rescue and first-aid classes. In spite of all the efforts of the Government, men occasionally attempt the impossible."

Heavy liquids have come into use in ore-dressing investigations, as they make possible the separation of an ore into its specific-gravity components. A paper containing a general dissertation on heavy liquids has been written by John D. Sullivan,4 and the practical application of heavy liquids is explained by Box and Crabtree5. Some heavy liquids become discolored after continued use, and the lack of transparency impairs their value. Since they are fairly expensive, reclaiming is desirable. This paper briefly discusses the preparation and care of some of the more common heavy liquids.

The effect of small percentages of sodium chloride on the incendivity of permissible explosives was studied by the Bruceton up-and-down technique in gallery tests. Both the reduction in incendivity achieved by addition of sodium chloride and application of the test method to explosives evaluation are discussed. It is demonstrated that the up-and-down technique in gallery testing is suitable for distinguishing differences in incendivity between different explosive compositions and between lots of the same composition. The study also shows that addition of relatively small quantities of sodium chloride tends to reduce the incendivity of explosives to firedamp, but addition of sodium chloride cannot insure reduced incendivity. Any improvement attributable to the salt can be counteracted by undefined variations in the explosive. The need for experimental investigations of a number of factors that may affect the safety of permissible explosives is emphasized. Computer input data for an operating mine is developed on the basis of a detailed ventilation survey which includes air quantity, air quality, pressure loss and fan performance measurements. Quantity measurements must be reviewed extensively and assumptions made about leakage quantities and airflow paths. Pressure measurements must be reviewed and developed into a pressure gradient for the mine system. Air quality measurements are used to determine methane sources and amounts. Finally, the fan test data is used to develop the correct fan characteristic curve. Quantities and pressure losses for each branch in the system are used to calculate the branch resistances which are then utilized in the ventilation simulator to model the mine system. QUANTITY BALANCE The quantity of air coming into a mine based on field measurements will rarely equal the quantity exiting the mine, even if allowances are made for methane or compressed air input to the system. The same statement can be made for airflow through any isolated part of the mine ventilation system such as individual working section or main aircourses leading to an area isolated from the rest of the mine. The reason for the apparent discrepancies is the accuracy of the indicated quantities which in turn is based on the accuracy of the individual velocity and area measurements. Even with measurements following the guidelines described in the previous section on quantity measurement, this error can only be minimized but not eliminated. As a result the ventilation system must be carefully balanced so that, for any loop, the quantity in plus any methane or compressed air injection will equal the quantity out. "The ordinance of March 27, 1919, contains provisions relative to the exploration for, Ind the exploitations of bauxite in the Colony of Surinam in Dutch Guiana.Permission to explore is limited to: Netherlanders; inhabitants of the Netherlands; inhabitants of Surinam; companies established in Netherlands, and companies established in Surinam.Holders of concessions for the exploitation of bauxite are limited to companies established in the Netherlands, or in Surinam, and these must reside in the Colony or must be represented the constantly.A permission or concession lapses: (a) when the holder ceases to have the required qualifications; (b) on the death of the holder where the assigns fail within one year to prove the required qualifications.Any dispute concerning the required qualifications must be decided by the Judge in the manner to be regulated by colonial ordinance.The Governor may, after consultation with the Privy-Council reserve tracts of land for the exploration and exploitation of Bauxite, either for the Government directly, or for concession under special provisions. These provisions shall be fixed by virtue of the colonial ordinances.Application for permission to explore shall be made in accordance with existing laws. Simultaneous applications, those made on the same day, must be decided by drawing lots; but an application for the concession for exploitation has preference ovor that for permission for exploration. As part of its goal to minimize the requirements for critical and strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to foster the use of domestically abundant materials such as molybdenum. This report describes the development of an investment shell molding technique that can be used to make castings of molybdenum and its alloys. The mold material is cubic Zr02 with a monoclinic Zr02 binder. The shell, formed by standard investment molding techniques described in the text, is prepared for molybdenum casting by firing for 6 hours at 1,550° C (2,822° F) or for 4 hours at 1,650° C (3,002° F). The resulting castings have predictable and reproducible dimensions with good detail. As-cast strength is poorer than the strength of wrought materials below 1,600° F. At and above this temperature, tensile strengths of cast and wrought materials are nearly equal. Aqueous corrosion of the castings in most media is insignificant.

A geologic study of the Mary Lee Group of coalbeds in the Black Warrior coal basin was undertaken to examine coal stratigraphy and determine regional trends and extent of the coalbeds. The area investigated encompasses 835 square miles in Jefferson, Walker, and Tuscaloosa Counties, Ala. More than 700 core logs were used to construct a structure map, coal, interval, and overburden isopachs, and cross sections. There is evidence that structure affected sedimentation. Coalbed isopachs indicate the Mary Lee Group was deposited in fluvial-deltaic and low-lying coastal plain environments. The Mary Lee coalbed is the only coalbed which is continuous throughout the area, commonly with two benches which have a combined thickness of 2 to 12 feet. The Mary Lee coalbed changes rank in the basin from high- through medium- to low-volatile coal. The methane gas potential of the Mary Lee Group coals is estimated to be greater than 1 trillion cubic feet. There is an excellent correlation between the orientation of surface cleats with those measured underground in the Mary Lee coalbed. The face cleats roughly parallel the axes of the area's folds and trend northeast-southwest.

This paper describing the mining methods employed by the Federal Mining and Smelting Co., operating the Morning mine at Mullan, Idaho, is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The daily tonnage produced at the Morning mine, including that mined by leasers, is 1,100 tons. Mine run of ore will average 9.1 per cent lead, 5.8 per cent zinc, and 4.4 ounces silver per ton. A stull set and fill method of mining is employed.

Maintaining ground stability in the gate roads, particularly the tailgate, has always been critical to the success of longwall mining, both in terms of safety and productivity. Several new support technologies have been developed in recent years to replace conventional wood and concrete cribbing for secondary roof support. Since their performance characteristics are unique, the best practices that have been developed with conventional wood cribbing may not be applicable for these alternative support technologies. Therefore, with so many options to consider and the importance of achieving adequate ground control at minimal cost, the trial and error approach to longwall gate road support is no longer prudent. This paper discusses a design methodology for standing secondary tailgate supports. This design technique requires in-mine measurements of tailgate support loading and convergence to establish a tailgate ground, reaction behavior based on the support and strata interaction. The methodology uses the performance characteristics generated in the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) to match the stiffness and load characteristics of various supports to the measured ground reaction behavior. It can be used to determine the appropriate -- application of alternative roof support systems or to design in- mine trials such that a fair and equitable comparison of different support systems can be made. A case study if the methodology at a western Pennsylvania mine site is presented in the paper, including a comparison of four alternative support technologies to conventional wood and concrete cribbing historically used at this particular mine.

Information is presented on the pressure and rate of pressure development during a dust explosion . The data were obtained in laboratory studies in a 75- cubic inch vessel with mineral , agricultural and chemical dusts . The factors investigated include dust concentration , oxygen concentration of the atmosphere , admixed inert powder , and admixed moisture . Information is given also on the effects of these factors on the composition of the atmosphere after the explosion .

Expenditures to advance scientific technology in general reached an all time high in 1965 with some $22.2 billion estimated to have been allocated by government and industry. Federal Government expenditures were estimated at $15.4 billion, with almost 90 percent of the funds devoted to programs involving defense, atomic energy, and outer space efforts. With this massive effort in the United States and a very impressive effort elsewhere in the world, there is little wonder that many new metallurgical developments were announced in the technical press during the year. No effort has been made to cover all aspects of the industry, but a few of the developments are described in this chapter.

The temperature entropy (T, S) chart? of thermodynamic properties of nitrogen herewith presented is a complete (1949) revision and a considerable extension of similar charts prepared by the author for use of the helium section of the Bureau of Mines about 25 years previously on the basis of inadequate data then obtaining. During the interval since that early effort, much experimentally determined information on nitrogen properties and behavior has been published, which now permits a more nearly accurate layout and more extensive charting of these relations.

Ferromanganese continues to be an indispensable requirement in steel manufacture. Approximately 470,000 of the 80 per cent ferro-alloy was consumed in 1929 and increasing amounts will be required annually by the steel industry unless some satisfactory substitute is found. An average of 14 pounds of metallic manganese is used for each ton of steel produced, The principal use of manganese is for de-oxidation of the metal in the steel refining processes, although a considerable amount is also used for the production of special manganese steels. Unfortunately, domestic production of manganese ore is inadequate to meet normal peace-time requirements, not to mention increased abnormal war-time demands. The rather large quantities of low-grade manganiferous iron ores which occur in the Coruna Range in Minnesota have for a number of years greatly appealed to those interested in the development of a domestic source of the supply. The North Central Experiment station of the Bureau of Mines has made an elaborate study of the possibilities of the pyrometallurgical treatment of ores from these deposits and much of the valuable information secured by them has already been published.

A REPORT of technological advancements restricted to a specific 12-month period is impractical. Inherent in the nature and development of technology is the element of time; rarely can a new process or product be attributed to a particular year. An overall picture of general trends and pattern changes, however, is indicative of technological growth. This paper presents selected observations and discussions of current metallurgical research and practices in an attempt to develop' such a picture. Of the estimated $16.5 billion spent for research and development in the United States in 1962, at least 80 percent was earmarked for the aircraft, electronics, chemical, and machinery industries. Much of the effort was of the end-use variety and was oriented closely to the national defense and aerospace programs. Only a small fraction of the total research money was directed to studies of the utilization and improvement of metals. Even if the investigations in allied fields such as solid state physics are included, the total research expenditure for metal and mineral materials barely reached $500 million. An additional $200 million was spent by industry and government for development of minerals recovery and processing methods.

The first study of this subject hits been made in Illinois, but as opportunity affords, similar studies will be made in other States. It is hoped that the data obtained will assist the coal-mining industry to standardize the forms of leases, and so avoid some of the abstruse and ambiguous clauses which slay be found in many of them and the consequent liability of costly litigation. In some of the publications of the Illinois Mining; Investigations prepared under a cooperative agreement with the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the Illinois State Geological Survey and the Engineering Experiment Station of the University of Illinois, the coal areas of the 'State have been divided into eight geological districts, each district being treated separately. This report covers District No. VI of that classification, and it is hopped that studies of the other districts will be completed in the near future and similar results published.

"In addition to the usual interpretation that is placed on the words ""thief"" and ""thieves"", the petroleum industry also uses these words when referring to an instrument that is used for taking samples of oil from a tank or reservoir. It is an abbreviation of the term ""thief-tube"". It is desirable in sampling volumes of oil in tanks or reservoirs to obtain samples at different intervals below the surface of the fluid, because of the variation in the character of the oil at different depths. It is for this purpose that the ""thief"" is used.The subject of oil thieves is probably as old as the oil industry itself. Opinions as to which is the most practical instrument for thieving oil in tanks, to obtain a true average sample, differ wherever oil is produced and is analyzed. Every district, and even many of the companies within the district, will have different appliances for ""grabbing"" oil samples. It is interesting to note in passing that though the thief has an apparently insignificant part in the handling of oil, yet the results depending on it are of paramount importance practically every branch of the transportation, refining, and marketing of petroleum. Determinations, particularly dependent on a representative sample, are made by the centrifuge, laboratory distillation tests, and the hydrometer.The purpose of this article is to discuss conditions found in the California fields. Only a general description of types of thieves and the methods of using them will be given. However, it is believed sufficient data are given to enable the reader to form his own opinion as to which of the devices is most practicable under the prevailing conditions. Thieves of all types have their good points, speaking broadly, and it is possible to get good results with any of them, provided they are operated according to instructions and with due care. In work of this kind the advantages or disadvantages reside in the person operating the instrument rather than in the instrument used."

To evaluate the potential for dust reduction, during blasthole drilling, of water or foam applied directly into the drill hole. Approach The Bureau of Mines tested a through-the-drill-steel water and foam injection technique in two noncoal mines to evaluate the method's potential for greater dust reduction. The tests were performed by drilling a series of blastholes for an entire face (a 90 minute time-period). For the first 45 minutes of drilling, foam or water was applied through the drill steel. Blowing ventilation was supplied to the entry about 50 feet from the face. The dust concentration measurements were made by a Real-Time Aerosol Monitor (RAM-I), and the data were read out on a strip chart recorder. The evaluation test results showed that the water or foam injection technique, when used on localized dust sources, can be an extremely effective dust control method. Small amounts of water used in this method have also allowed it flexibility to be used in water-soluble ores such as salt, gypsum, anhydrite, and trona. How The System Works Water or foam is mixed with compressed air (approximately 100-120 psi) with suitable metering systems and forced through the drill steel into the blast hole at the point of dust generation. Because the water or foam is applied at the source, minimal quantities of liquid are needed (0.2 to 0.6 gpm). These low flowrates are sufficient to just moisten the dust emerging from the blast hole, thus eliminating a major source of airborne dust. The wet drilling procedure also eliminates a second source of dust. With dry drilling, the dust from the blast hole falls to the floor. Since this can be a 15-ft drop or more, the impact can send the dust billowing up from the floor, adding to the airborne dust. With wet drilling, the moistened dust merely dribbles down the face.
