Codelco's Chuquicamata Underground Division (DCHS) faces issues due to collapses in its subsidence streets, which hinders the advancement of the subsidence front and leads to the loss of areas and reserves. To address these issues, DCHS and Orica have developed a new excavation methodology based on pre-loading explosives in high drawbell. This methodology involves creating a high drawbell extending from the floor of the production level to the ceiling of the subsidence level, divided into two phases: upper and lower. A resin stemming is used to separate these phases. The excavation strategy adjusts to variables such as reception volume, fluffing, and excavation geometry, involving vertical pre-loading of the explosive and the use of a separating element between the phases. The test aims to validate the new excavation methodology and the retaining element in the rock mass, evaluating aspects such as drawbell geometry, impact on the rock mass, damage to the retaining element, and fragmentation. Wireless electronic detonators are used in the upper phase to improve safety by eliminating the need for physical connections, while traditional electronic detonators are employed in the lower phase. Low-density bulk emulsion is applied to minimize the impact on the Crown pillar and extraction point, and higher-density explosives are used above the subsidence level to ensure good caving. Results showed that the blast achieved 86% conformity with the theoretical design. Resin stemming allowed for 100% effective detonation in the upper columns, and the fragmentation obtained was 5.44 inches, which was less than expected. No damage to the Crown pillar was observed, and the explosive quality met standards. This technique has proven to be effective and viable, suggesting the possibility of eliminating the subsidence level in future levels, resulting in savings, and providing greater stability to the rock mass.

In the current context of heightened concerns with explosives security, there is significant interest in technological controls to improve security. It is important to be able to control what is fired, by whom, where and when. This paper describes research Orica has performed to investigate and test biometric systems to address the question of "by whom". The goal of this research is to incorporate the most suitable biometric system onto the 'blaster' unit of an electronic initiation system. This approach will ensure that only authorized personnel can initiate a blast involving electronic detonators. Requirements analysis: we initially explored many different biometric technologies to evaluate them against the requirements, including security, usability, ruggedness, size, form factor, privacy, and operational temperature range, This analysis identified chip based fingerprint sensors as the best candidate. Development of prototype units: in order to test the identified sensors, we modified standard, commercially-available, electronic blast initiation units ("blaster") to incorporate a fingerprint reader. Testing and evaluation: Biometric We conducted a biometric scenario evaluation in order to determine: 1) security level (measured by false accept rate (FAR)); 2) usability (measured by failure to enroll (FTE) and false reject rates (FRR)), and to 3) discover environment specific issues and challenges (such as temperature, humidity, dirt, or those related to the usage patterns of the user group). Tests were conducted at quarry sites in eastern Ontario, Canada. Results show rates of: FAR= 0%, FTE= 1.67%, FRR= 28.81%. Overall, these results suggest that this fingerprint biometric technology has a good level of usability in this application of electronic blast initiation control.

This paper presents an application of 3-D plots and non-linear regressions to define a sitespecific form of the charge weight scaled distance. The PPV (PPA) of single hole blasts is normally considered as a function of two independent variables - the charge weight and the distance. It is of great importance to obtain the relationship of the function accurately for a concerned site in terms of blast vibration analysis and modeling. However, in pre-computer time it was difficult to plot 3-D graphs. Consequently, a charge weight scaled distance was used to plot the PPV (or PPA) against the scaled distance as 2-D graphs. Blast vibration investigators use several forms of the charge weight scaled distances to plot data. We can exemplify them with the cube root of charge weight scaled distance, the square root of charge weight scaled distance, and other forms (Hossaini and Sen, 2004). Each of these scaled distances assumes relative contributions of the charge weight and the distance to the vibration attenuation. For example, the charge weight is assumed to have a less contribution to vibration in the cube root scaled distance than it is assumed in the square-root scaled distance. In reality, for different sites the relative contribution of the charge weight and the distance may be different and site-specific. This may explain that in some cases, the blast vibration data plots using these charge weight scaled distances are scattered. This could be largely due to the fact that the definition of the form of the charge weight scaled distance is not adequate for the particular site condition.

Emulsions have been developed for over forty years to become the most common water-resistant explosives used in the mining industry. An emulsion is a common commodity, with many examples in our day to day lives of one immiscible liquid dispersed in another. They have varying degrees of stability from a few seconds to years. What makes their application in explosives unique is twofold. They contain a high concentration of salts in the dispersed phase and also have a far larger volume of dispersed phase than continuous phase. The continuous phase contains at least 75% by weight of an oxidizer such as ammonium nitrate dissolved in water. The crystallization point of these solutions is often >60oC which means that the formation of the emulsion has to occur at an elevated temperature. Once the emulsion is cooled, its structure helps to prevent the formation of crystals in an otherwise unstable system. At room temperature there is a considerable potential for the small oxidizer droplets to crystallize which is countered by the strength of the oil layer and also the size of the emulsion droplet. If the emulsion droplet is too large then crystals can form which may lead to rapid deterioration of the emulsion and overall crystallization, accompanied by a temperature rise as the heat of crystallization is released from the emulsion. The size of the emulsion droplet is critical in preventing crystal growth and subsequent droplet coalescence and emulsion break down. One method of examining emulsions and understanding their structure is to use optical microscopy to measure droplet size and also emulsion deterioration from shearing, temperature cycling and when contaminants are introduced, such as detergents, different oil types, coating agents and dust particles. The interest of seismologists in mining explosions has increased substantially with the construction of the International Monitoring System (IMS). The IMS supports the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty by providing global data coverage from seismic, hydro acoustic, infrasonic, and radionuclide sensors that will detect a host of natural and man-made events at regional (<2000 km) distances. Ideally, the recorded data can be used to identify those events that have explosive characteristics and therefore might be clandestine nuclear tests. The regional observations assure the detection of mining explosions, and these must be properly identified to avoid false alarms of the monitoring system. Cooperation with the mining industry, including documentation of the firing programs, provides critical information necessary to characterize the seismograms.

In April of 2000, two adults and their newborn infant, were poisoned by carbon monoxide in their home and received medical treatment at a Pennsylvania hospital. Carboxyhemoglobin levels were; child - 3 1%, father - 28Oh, and mother - 17%. Initially the furnace was blamed but after further review, blasting at a nearby coal mine was determined to be the source. All other sources of carbon monoxide were ruled out. The blasting was about 400 feet from the house. The conditions that led to the migration of gas include: the blasts were highly confined, the geologic structure contained fractures that served as conduits for the carbon monoxide to reach a hand-dug well outside the house, and the well was atmospherically connected to the basement floor drains.

A new Convention Center is going to be built in the millenary city of Toledo, right in the old city limits. The workings will need to excavate some 80.000 cubic meters of granite, which has, a trench-like structure already blasted for the construction (60 years ago) of a parking lot and a shopping area. Surrounding this trench, some few feet away, there are structures and buildings from the 16th century and remainings from previous times that need to be preserved from any damage caused by blasting. Because of this, a vibration analysis was designed according to the special characteristics of this work. Structures to monitor were located at several levels. It considered three different directions of study in order to evaluate the impact of vibrations of the structures located at three different heights of the granite trench. On top, the historical convent of Santa Fe, with some remaining from the 8th century (Muslim domination of the Iberian Peninsula), on the bottom, the Justice Hall of Toledo with 16th century walls, and, in the middle, a wall and a tower from times of the king Phillip II (16th century, the time of the Spanish Empire).

Lightning is a very real problem in the surface mining industry. Today, as adverse market conditions continue to influence the surface coal industry, it has become necessary that all functions of the surface mining process become as efficient as possible. High production with reduced manpower is the winning combination of staying competitive in the market place. We at AMAX Coal are committed to staying in the coal business, but we have always been committed to providing a safe work environment for our people and will continue to do so in the future. Approximately two years ago, our Midwest mines installed state of the art lightning detection and warning systems at our mines. This paper will cover its application at Delta Mine; the benefits and problems encountered, and the impact this system has had on Delta Mine.

This paper presents some of the results obtained during the research work about the use of technologies and digital transformation in the process of rock drilling in open pit mines. The use of automation presents itself as a disruptive factor and a driver of improvements that provide sustainability in rock drilling. Seven main operational parameters were utilized to combine measurement while the drilling (MWD) with other information generated by the equipment during hole drilling, in six different lithologies in an iron mine, located in the central region of Minas Gerais in Brazil. Adjustments and corrections were made to the data collected in order to minimize external influences other than the rock itself, to ensure the effectiveness of the analyses. Finally, we sought to compare the performance of the drilling process in manual and automatic operation modes. Thus, making it possible to show the efficiency and impact on the sustainability of rock drilling operations in open pit mines.

It wasn’t until the late 1920s that it was solved for good, with the introduction of nitrated ethylene glycol as a partial replacement for nitroglycerin in dynamites. In previous conferences the authors have reported on toxic fumes generated by the detonation of ANFO. The research reported here extends the earlier work to include an emulsion blasting agent and ANFO/emulsion blends. Explosive mixtures were shot in 4-inch Schedule 80 steel pipe (outer diameter 4.50 in (11.43 cm), inner diameter 3.83 in (9.72 cm)) in a chamber in the experimental mine at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). Following each shot, the fumes in the chamber were analyzed using on-line instrumentation.

The Fording River mine in British Columbia produces hard coking coal in an open pit operation. Coal seams are exposed by blasting overburden and digging blasted muck with rope shovels. The drilling and blasting process presents a considerable cost factor to the operation. Reducing the amount of explosives needed therefore contributes considerably to costs saving initiatives. However, reducing the powder factor only makes sense if the subsequent loading processes by the shovels are not compromised in terms of productivity.
