An extensive computer program has been developed which will store and analyze pertinent blast related parameters such as date, time, shot coordinates, charge, delay times, etc. In conjunction with these blast parameters, measured ground vibration information can be stored. In addition to actual seismograph data, predicted ground vibration in terms of velocity (inches/sec) can be generated for selected receiver locations. The magnitude of the blast generated ground vibration is based on scale distance relationships. The program can be used for planning blasts, to satisfy local environmental regulations and for insurance and/or legal purposes.

A system for contour blasting with a linear shape charge principle has been studied /10/. In one operation the charge creates two notches along the bore hole wall and breaks the rock mass. The built in notching capability makes it possible to reduce the specific charge and the bore hole pressure to 1/3 of what is used in conventional contour blasting and to ensure that cracks are initiated and propagated only at the notches and nowhere else. The notching capability of linear shape charges has been studied experimentally and the bore hole pressure calculated to aid in optimization of a charge for future field experiments in bore holes with a diameter of about 50 mm.

Energy released by the explosive is typically partitioned in brisance, heave and losses. The fact that energy released in the P-V expansion curve below a certain point is lost has resulted in the concept of available energy. Through simple calculations it is shown that energy released at pressure levels thought to be low, amounts to a significant proportion of the total energy value. Furthermore, throw calculations indicate that the assumed loss of that part of energy does not justify practical results. Loss of energy at the low pressure levels may also not be justified from the fragmentation point of view as pressure levels below 1 kbar are enough to extend radial fractures around a borehole. Finally the equation used for the P-V behaviour of the explosive gases is important in throw calculations. Simplified approaches may not reproduce the performance of the explosive which is not characterized only by its energy content.

Laboratory studies in homogeneous material indicate that the area of new surfaces created by blasting is proportional to the energy imparted to the material. Field studies, however, show that fragmentation is also related to the rockmass structure. This paper reviews ongoing compilation of a comprehensive and integrated blasting database which is based upon field monitoring and laboratory testing. A priority application of the database is to support attempts to more fully understand structural control over fragmentation. Database construction and the relative importance of rockmass physical and mechanical properties are considered in the paper. A methodology for data collection prior to, during and after blasting is reviewed. Data summaries from three case studies of blast performance in surface and underground mines are presented. These illustrate various aspects of the methodology, which included image analysis to quantify the fragment shape and remnant geology evident in the muckpile as part of the evaluation of structural control over fragmentation.

A blast monitoring program conducted at Chemical Lime Companys new lime calcining facility near Ste. Genevieve, Missouri is discussed. The purpose was to develop blasting criteria for the construction and operation of the lime plant within the quarry operated by Tower Rock Stone. Further, it was imperative to accommodate production requirements into the blasting criteria. The major concern was the effect of blasting on the curing of green concrete during the construction of the storage silos and kiln stacks. In addition to discussing the susceptibility of curing concrete to blast vibrations, the paper also details how this varies with time.

"At Bulga Coal, the objectives of drilling and blasting are to maximise safety and to minimise the totalcost of mining. A recent audit of two overburden blasts established that the standard of drilling and blasting is excellent. No apparent hazards were identified. Laser profiling showed that highwall free faces are reasonably planar with some exceptions, thereby promoting uniform burden distances along front-row charges. However, in three isolated areas along one face, small burden distances existed. The mean and the standard deviation of errors in the collar positions of front-row blastholes was found to be 0.3 + 0.03 m. A borehole video camera was used to show that blastholes did not feature open bedding plane partings, cavities or damage produced by the blast in front of them."

The search for the "perfect" alternative is something like the never ending quest of the perpetual motion machine. Unfortunately, the laws of physics prevent us from getting something for nothing, and Murphy's Law normally gives us nothing for a lot of something. Regardless of Murphy, the quest goes on, and in our industry cheaper ANFO seems to be the popular subject.

Previous work in which rock properties and blasting parameters (geometry, charging and timing) were reported together with truck filling times, is taken as a starting point for a thorough analysis of the influence of the former on the mucking velocity. The experimental set was composed by 11 blasts made in an open pit mine. Non-parametric, distribution-free statistics is applied. The mucking rates (in bank cubic meters per unit of bucket volume and per hour) appear to be clearly dependent on the explosive energy and powder factor, both magnitudes combined as energetic powder factor (energy per unit of rock volume). The mucking rate is a non-monotonic function of such factor in the range of the blasts analyzed. The determination of the function is optimum when the fraction of the explosive below grade is not considered and when the explosive energy is qualified as that delivered at a partial detonation regime. Different types of loaders seem appropriate for different energy levels. At low levels both front loaders and rope shovels obtain small productivities without a statistically significant difference in their performance. At high energy levels, front loaders qualify higher than rope shovels. Mucking velocities can be equally small at low energy powder factors and at high ones if rope shovels are involved.

This contribution of the concept of mass blasting both closing and production allows breaking paradigms, to limit the number of tons to thunder. The areas of geotechnical different mining large mining companies worldwide and especially from the National Copper Corporation (CODELCO, Chile) has been declining volumes closing blasting and production, with the misconception to protect the end walls of the pit, before any geotechnical risks caused by various types of faults; especially the circular faults. A blasting of small tonnage can do more damage to a wall when it is not properly sequenced, leading to the coupling of the wave train and therefore the exponential damage in/s (peak particle velocity, PPV) on the wall of the Tagus. Blasting closing mass production and contribute technically and operationally in the dynamics of the following operations: loading, hauling, crushing, processing and preparation of the final product; eliminating delays to return to thunder small volumes where one must stop all mine equipment, incurring high costs and especially losing valuable time in the continuity of the following unit activities.

This paper reviews empirical and analytical information about window breakage due to airblast. As is the case with damage to structures caused by ground vibrations, a fixed break/no break threshold is inapplicable and window damage must be expressed in terms of a statistical probability. The information is summarized in a graph showing the probability of windows being broken by a given level of overpressure.

This paper is an update on a paper presented at the 2022 ISEE conference. The original paper presented how the mine operator desired to open up ore reserves near several mine structures including two crushers, the conveyor belt drive and the concentrator thickeners. In order to open up additional ore for extraction (over 3 million long tons or 3 million tonnes) it was necessary to blast out two benches near the mine structures. Since the two benches have been successfully shot, the mine has now conducted nine production blasts in this area at distances as close as 116 m (380 ft) to the two primary crushers. These production blasts are full size production blasts consisting of up to 300 or more blast holes. For these blasts the two primary crushers were still the critical structures as they were the production life blood of the mine. If the crushers were shut down due to any damage from the blasting, the revenue of the mine would be adversely affected. As with the initial bench blasts, two issues provided an extra challenge to the blast design. The first was that the blast holes were still considered large diameter at 12¼ inches (311 mm) and 16 inches (406 mm). The second issue was that the bench heights were short, with the average varying from 34-40 ft (10.3-12.2 m). This combination of large diameter blast holes with a short bench provided an unfavorable geometry for the goals established by the mine management. The mine management established the following goals. 1) None of the mine structures would be damaged by fly-rock. 2) Minimize the blast vibrations at the crushers. 3) The last goal was to produce a muck pile that could be dug easily by hydraulic shovels. Electronic detonators were applied to achieve the necessary control of the blast and optimal fragmentation throughout the mine. UAV surveys of the blast area were also conducted to provide a 3-D representation of the free faces and bench surface. The 3-D point cloud produced from this was used to measure the shape of the free faces. Once the shape of the free faces was quantified, it was possible to establish proper placement of the crest holes and develop a custom explosive load for each blast hole. The results of the nine blasts have provided what the customer requested. The peak vibration level at the crushers for the nine production blasts was 1.6 in/s (40.6 mm/s) at a frequency of 18.9 Hz. There have been no fly-rock or blast vibration issues at any of the nearby mine structures. As a result, the mine has been able to maintain its production with no downtime. The muck piles have been well fragmented with reports from the shovel that they have all dug well.

The Sarcheshmeh Copper mine will be developing its open-pit in order to reach to the remaining ore in the deposit. One of the problems regarding the development plan is the ore handling system from the pit. After its development, the pit depth and its daily production will be increased. Therefore, the present transportation system (shovel and trucks) can no longer be used efficiently. It is necessary to use a new system that can reduce transportation costs and handle the new amount of blasted material at the same time. Studies show that an in-pit crusher and conveyor belt is the most suitable system that could be used in this situation. One of disadvantages of the conveyor belt, however, is its limitation in the particle sizes that it could carry. Consequently, size distribution resulting from the fragmentation process is an important parameter in choosing an efficient conveyor belt system. The size distribution of the fragmentation process also affects the operations following blasting. The determination of this parameter allows the optimization of blast design and explosives. Hence, during this project, the size distribution of blast fragmentation in the different types of ore at the Sarcheshmeh mine was determined by the image analysis technique. Numerous digital pictures were captured of the different blasted faces to prepare a representative sample of each kind of rock. They were then analyzed using the GoldSize image analysis software. Results show that fragmentation in the blasted rock is relatively high. It is therefore expected that an appropriate conveyor belt could be selected for further developing the open-pit mine at Sarcheshmeh.

With the growing concerns about terrorism world-wide, numerous agencies conduct experiments to investigate the effects of terrorist vehicle bombs. In many cases, the vehicle bomb of interest utilizes some form of ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) as the explosive source. Due to the high cost of fullscale testing, it is advantageous to conduct at least some vehicle bomb experiments at reduced scale. Extensive testing has shown that ANFO is a non-ideal explosive, and its explosive output does not scale reliably at explosive masses below approximately 400 lb (182 kg). Most scale-model testing requires explosive masses 1 to 5 orders of magnitude smaller. Thus, scale-model testing is typically conducted with “ideal” explosives, such as composition C-4, which perform in a scalable manner at virtually any charge mass. The utilization of an ideal explosive to model ANFO requires the existence of an accurate means of equating the performance of the two explosives. The airblast equivalence of C-4 and ANFO has been well established. However, the cratering equivalence of these explosives is not thoroughly quantified. This is especially true for the case of an above-ground detonation, which is precisely the scenario of interest in vehicle bomb studies. A study has been conducted to better define the cratering equivalence of C-4 and ANFO for above-ground detonations. This paper presents a discussion of results from this research.

Section 709 of Public Law 95-87, "Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977," requests the National Academy of Sciences to determine if the standards of the act are applicable to minerals other than coal. The Academy has established the Committee on Surface Mining and Reclamation to respond to this charge. The committee is, itself, organized to be responsive to the varieties of minerals, environments, mining systems, and locations that are representative of U.S. mining systems. It is not the charge of the committee to write trial legislation, but to indicate whether or not technology, extant or proposed, is available to meet the standards of the law, and at what cost. It is within this set of conditions that the committee will examine blasting.
