Many jet grouted columns were recently installed to create a jet grout-treated soil foundation for an earthen embankment used in a large shoreline stabilization project in the Mystic River in Charlestown, MA. A physical test program was used to determine whether the jet grouting parameters the Contractor selected would meet the design requirements given the local soil variability, including soft river sediments and organic soils. The presence of hydrocarbons encountered in the marine sediments during the test program caused concern that the design strength could not be achieved. The published literature discusses the environmental aspects of jet grouting with hydrocarbons. The literature did not include many studies of the effect on jet grout-treated soil strength for the types and concentration of hydrocarbons encountered on this project. The grout mix, air pressure, and number of passes of jet grouting were varied in a second field test program to determine jet grouting parameters needed to achieve the design strength of columns with hydrocarbons. A geo-probe study was performed to identify the type and concentration of hydrocarbons on the site. With few exceptions, the quality control core samples from the production columns met the design requirements with many strength values far exceeding the design strength. This paper presents the data, and reviews the lessons learned. PROJECT BACKGROUND The Charlestown Bus Garage, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) bus maintenance facility located on the Mystic River. The site was home to a coal gasification facility before it was developed by the MBTA as a bus garage in 1978. A deadman-anchored steel sheet pile bulkhead wall installed along the Mystic river on the east side of the site supports the site grade at about El. 11 ft (NAVD 1988) (Figure 1).

"The new 11-story U.S. Federal Courthouse building in downtown Los Angeles demanded a cost effective foundation system capable of attaining a strict total settlement criterion of 0.5 inches (12 mm) under high applied loads. A design-build ground improvement system consisting of 3 ft (0.9 m) and 7 ft (2.1 m) diameter deep soil mix (DSM) columns embedded into the relatively soft Fernando Formation bedrock was selected for the project. The DSM columns support applied stresses of up to 8,800 psf from four large concrete core elements that transfer concentrated building loads to a 3 to 6 ft (0.9 to 1.8 m) thick reinforced concrete mat. The soil mixing ground improvement solution provided flexibility by allowing installation of the DSM columns around existing belled caissons left in place from prior structures, and by allowing repositioning of some of the DSM columns to avoid other existing obstructions in the fill. DSM spoils were used to construct a 2 ft (0.6 m) thick load transfer platform on top of the DSM columns. Quality control measures included utilizing equipment outfitted with automated data acquisition systems, performing three full scale load tests, performing daily wet-mix sampling and compression testing, performing full-depth coring and unconfined compression testing on core samples, and using a borehole acoustic televiewer to evaluate the uniformity of the DSM columns where core recovery was problematic. The results of subsurface investigation and the load tests were used to develop 3-dimensional finite differences models for evaluating stress distribution and deformation of the foundation system.INTRODUCTIONThe new U.S. Federal Courthouse building is currently under construction in downtown Los Angeles, California. The new courthouse will be 11 stories tall with one partial below-grade B1 basement level. The building will have four structural core elements that extend from the main building foundation at the B1 level to the top of the structure. The majority of the building loads will be transferred through the structural core elements to a new 3 to 6 ft (0.9 to 1.8 m) thick reinforced concrete mat beneath the central portion of the structure. The foundation pressures beneath each of the core element locations will be approximately 6,200 to 8,800 psf (300 to 420 kPa) with lower foundation pressures at locations farther away from the central core area."

"This paper offers a case history of piled raft foundation in soft ground supporting a twelve-story building in Tokyo. To increase bearing capacity of the soft soil as well as a countermeasure of liquefaction, grid-form deep cement mixing walls (DMWs) were employed with the piled raft. Based on the long-term monitoring results, the ratio of the load carried by the DMWs to the effective structure load after the construction of the raft was estimated to be 0.3 while that carried by the piles was 0.7. In order to clarify the contribution of the DMWs to bearing the structure load, numerical simulation of the settlement and the load sharing among the piles, the DMWs and the unstabilized soil was performed using a three-dimensional finite element model. The results of the numerical simulation agreed well with the measured values, when the Young’s modulus of the DMWs obtained from the unconfined compressive tests was adopted and the shear modulus of the soft soil was reduced to 50% of that at small strains.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, piled raft foundations have been used in many countries as building foundations. The effectiveness of piled rafts in reducing average and differential settlements has been confirmed not only on favorable ground conditions as shown by Katzenbach et al. (2000), Poulos (2001) and Mandolini et al. (2005), but also on unfavorable ground conditions such as soft clay and/or liquefiable sand using ground improvement technique (Yamashita et al., 2011a; Yamashita et al., 2011b; Yamashita et al. 2013). Grid type ground improvement using the Deep Mixing Method has been applied to sandy ground as a countermeasure of liquefaction to increase liquefaction resistance of unstabilized soil left in the grid walls where its shear deformation during seismic motion is reduced by the confinement effect of the grid walls (Kitazume, 2013). The high applicability of the method was demonstrated in the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake and the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake (Tokimatsu et al., 1996; Uchida et al., 2012a; Uchida et al., 2012b).This paper offers a case history of piled raft foundation in soft ground supporting a twelve-story building in Tokyo. "Whilst safety is considered to be of high priority in every aspect of engineering projects, it is equally important for designers and contractors to be continually aware of their obligations to the immediate environment and the society as a whole. These include responsibilities to minimise the amount of nonrenewable natural resources and energy used on projects, to reduce carbon foot prints on projects, to minimise the quantity of wastes produced on projects, to minimise the level of pollution on construction sites and to reuse materials and waste products whenever and wherever possible.In other words, professional engineering practice needs to be accompanied by an underlying fundamental objective to improve, restore and sustain the environment. However, achieving this objective requires continuous collaborative interaction and effective communication between the different specialists involved on every project from the early stages. In addition, developing a well-thought-out economical solution is key to achieving the sustainability aspect of the above objective.This paper focuses on the design, construction and management of a recently completed large multi-level basement scheme in Central London, with greater emphasis on collaborative approaches taken by the design engineers, commercial managers, construction managers and site operatives to deliver the most reasonably economical and sustainable solutions to the client. Solutions were based on combinations of general and specialist engineering knowledge, with due considerations for health & safety, sustainability, cost, practicality, time and community requirements.INTRODUCTIONUnderground structures have become vital components of urban life worldwide e.g. tunnels serve many water, wastewater, highway and railway schemes, basements have been incorporated into many urban commercial, institutional and residential developments, while many public underground car parks have been built to deal with the incessant problem of insufficient surface parking spaces in busy urban centres.The safe design, construction and maintenance of underground structures have been well-mastered by the deep foundation industry over the years. However, just like many other areas of engineering, aside the need to satisfy safety requirements, underground construction practice is now faced with a new set of requirements; the demand for more sustainable and cost-effective solutions, with reduced environmental and societal impacts. Designers and managers of underground construction schemes are now compelled to minimise the use of natural resources and energy, to minimise the amount of waste produced, to minimise the level of environmental pollution, noise and disruption to traffic and normal societal life at ground level around underground construction sites. In addition, the recycling of site wastes and reuse of materials have now become important aspects of underground space development. Considerable effort is being put into promoting sustainable development across the industry."

"A field test was performed to investigate the applicability of electroosmosis with the injection of saline solution of Taipei silty clay. The calcium chloride solution and sodium silicate solution were used as the saline solution for the injection in this test. The results of this study indicate that injection using calcium chloride solution and sodium silicate solution during the electroosmosis to increase drained water from cathode and electro-chemical reaction can greatly improve the effect of electroosmosis and shorten the time of treatment. The results of field vane tests showed that the undrained shear strength after treatment increased an average of approximately 120% for a treatment period of 24 days.INTRODUCTIONThe first field application of electroosmosis in soil was demonstrated by Casagrande in 1939. Since then, more complete field applications of electroosmosis such as Bjerrum (1967), Fetzer (1967), and Lo et al. (1991b) have been made.The results of field electroosmotic work for a period of 120 days were presented by Bjerrum et al. ( 1967). The mean undrained shear strength, Su, increased from 18 to about 40 kPa, with a uniform surface settlement of about 0.5 m. Lo et al. (1991b), with a more sophisticated installation and a relatively larger spacing, also had positive results. For a 3 m electrode spacing during the treatment of a period of 33 days, the mean Su increased from 18 to about 25 kPa. Although the effect of the electroosmosis could be applied in the field based on the above examples, the response remained slow. For actual field work, the application of electroosmosis will be limited due to short project schedules and request of the effect of improvement."

"The new Mercedes-Benz Stadium (MBS), home of the Atlanta Falcons, is part of a new era of stadium construction in the U.S. These new-age stadiums are larger and have more amenities than their predecessors. Many of the MBS’s features, including its innovative retractable roof, result in extraordinary structural loads. The roof structure is supported by a series of mega columns that bear on eight large caps, six of which are supported by drilled piers. Each of the pier caps contains between 8 and 16 drilled piers that bear in the underlying bedrock. The design pier diameters are 6 and 6.5 ft (1.8 m and 1.9 m). Augercast piles were used to support two of the mega column caps. Drilled piers, augercast piles, aggregate piers and spread footings were used to support the more lightly loaded portions of the structure.The focus of this article is the construction aspects of the drilled pier foundations. Initially, a fairly extensive drilled pier load test program was performed. Load testing included a Statnamic compression test, two Osterberg Cell tests and two lateral tests. Production pier installation included over 3,800 linear ft (1,158.2 m) of earth excavation and over 1,350 linear ft (411.4 m) of hard rock excavation. The piers contain more than 6,600 cu yd (4,587.3 cu m) of concrete and 1,100 tons (998 tonnes) of reinforcing steel. Drilled pier installation took about 4.5 months. ABE Enterprises was the specialty foundation subcontractor and Bauer-Pileco was the equipment provider.Site and Subsurface ConditionsThe project site is in downtown Atlanta and was originally occupied by residential buildings. A portion of the site was later developed as a rail yard, and other areas contained light manufacturing, warehouses and other relatively light structures. For the past 15 to 20 years the site had been used for surface parking.Beneath a surficial layer of manmade fill, soil test borings at the site generally encountered residual soil, partially weathered rock and the parent bedrock. The bedrock at the site is highly variable, both in elevation and in hardness/quality. The depth to rock is reasonably uniform within the western two-thirds of the site at about 20 to 50 ft (6 to 15.2 m), with a few exceptions. In the eastern third of the site, the rock drops off dramatically to the north and east. In one mega column cap, there was almost 80 ft (24.3 m) in elevation difference. In two borings in the cap that were 20 ft (6.1 m) apart, the top of rock varied in elevation by 34 ft (10.3 m)"

A case history of design, prediction, instrumented static load tests on probe piles, installation monitoring, and integrity testing of production piles is presented. Based upon project-specific subsoil conditions, as obtained from several 60 to 80 ft (18.3 to 24.4 m) deep test borings, deep foundation system alternatives included driven concrete and steel pipe piles as well as augered cast-in-place (ACIP) piles. High structural loads, site-specific constraints, and the production time frame mandated by the project owner led to the selection of an ACIP pile foundation system that was designed for a pile capacity of 75 tons (667 kN) in compression and 35 tons (309 kN) in tension. Site-specific concerns were raised about the highly porous nature of fragmented and decomposed sandy limestone as well as the high grout intake during construction that could result in increased foundation cost as well as interconnecting of the piles in the rock layer. Consequentially, a multi-phase ACIP pile evaluation program consisting of instrumented compression pile load tests, in conjunction with single-hole ultrasonic pile testing, pile echo testing (sonic testing), as well as full-time production pile monitoring by an experienced geotechnician was specified. As a result of this testing and evaluation program, while grout usage was determined to be within an acceptable range, the instrumented compression load tests yielded data that allowed use of 55 ft (16.8 m) long ACIP piles in lieu of the original plans to use 70 ft (21.3 m) long precast concrete piles. This information was effectively utilized as part of the overall quality control program to install a total of 268, 14 in. (356 mm) diameter ACIP piles within the building footprint to depths of 55 ft (16.8 m) below the pile cut-off elevation as part of the foundation support system. Information recorded during installation included rate of insertion/extraction of the auger, grout pump strokes and pressure, total grout volume, and grout factors, as well as quality and strength of grout. Additionally, many pre-selected installed piles were tested for integrity with a Pile Integrity Sonic Analyzer (PISA) using both sonic and ultrasonic methods. This engineered, monitored, and tested foundation solution provided an effective and quality intensive basis for completion and approval of the foundation work for the building that resulted in cost savings over other foundation alternatives for the owner.

Working in urban environments presents unique logistical challenges beyond those typically associated with traditional geotechnical design and construction. These challenges can include constrained sites with limited access and laydown area, vibration concerns for adjacent structures, and the need to complete work within limited schedules. When challenging geotechnical conditions like variable bedrock elevations are present, the need to balance performance requirements with logistical constraints become the driving factor when selecting deep foundation systems. This paper focuses on the deep foundations used for a new elevated pedestrian bridge at a major health care facility in Tampa, Florida. In addition to the technical design requirements, the owner required a deep foundation system that could offer low vibrations, rapid production, and clean installation to limit impacts on their properties and the public roadway that separated them. The paper describes the project specific geotechnical and design conditions, describes Ductile Iron Pile design, and focuses on how installation of the system addressed the unique logistical challenges. In addition, the implementation of a full-scale load testing program to assess compression, uplift, and lateral design capacities is presented. This paper represents one of the few published references for Ductile Iron Piles on projects in the United States.

Due to the worldwide population growth, the development of sustainable infrastructure and the exploration of renewable energies plays a key role to handle the rising megacity trends and to limit carbon footprint. Herrenknecht AG is a leading manufacturer of Tunnel Boring machines and has constantly endeavored through its extensive Research and Development programs to address limitations faced by the civil engineering industry as regards to construction equipment capabilities. New mechanized technologies, mainly coming from the tunnelling industry, have been developed by Herrenknecht AG as an efficient alternative to conventional civil engineering, where tailor-made concepts are required to comply with restricted conditions onsite. Very often this innovation led technology capability has meant making construction processes safer due to minimal human intervention and also far more productive due to higher performance as compared to other latest or conventional methods of construction. The rising need for even higher building structures and large-capacity bridges involve the development of innovative deep foundation technologies for on- and offshore operation. Conventional methods like bore piles reach their technical and economic limits under certain conditions. For building shafts and foundations, the mechanized Vertical Shaft Sinking Machine technology (VSM) from Herrenknecht AG is a proven innovation and has now been used in various onshore infrastructure projects worldwide to construct a total of 94 circular shafts in depths of up to 115 meters. It operates below the groundwater level, completely remote-controlled from the surface in a diameter range from 4.5 to 18 meters. "This paper describes the design and construction aspects of the foundation support for a 57-story building currently under construction in lower Manhattan. The site is located near the East River with subsurface conditions consisting of about 40-ft [12.2-m] of unsuitable historic fill and soft plastic clay underlain by about 130-ft [39.6-m] of dense sand resting on bedrock. A mat foundation supported on unsuitable soils improved by jet grouting was selected for the project. Design concepts and selection of the engineering properties of the improved and natural foundation soils are discussed. The results of quality control testing and methods to verify design parameters during construction are presented.INTRODUCTIONNew York City (especially Manhattan) is known for its skyline of high rise structures. The geologic conditions in the New York Metropolitan Area influence the selection of foundations and feasibility of high rise construction as noted by Horvath (2013). These conditions include varying depth and quality of bedrock, multiple glacial events during the Pleistocene Epoch, and the effects of human modifications to the subsurface environment. Clusters of relatively taller buildings are generally located in Lower and Midtown Manhattan where sound crystalline bedrock is at relatively shallow depth beneath the ground surface and shallow foundations rest on the bedrock surface. In recent years the use of more costly high capacity driven piles or drilled caissons and deep basements has enabled the high skyline to spread to other areas."

"Since the dawn of construction, there has been a need for excavations, which sometimes need to occur below the groundwater table. Excavations in themselves are difficult enough, with the myriad of requirements, such as engineered support of excavations, considerations for stability and numerous other concerns. Excavations executed in rural landscapes can be accomplished easily without significant consideration to accessibility, adjacent properties or structures, and construction limits and deformations. However, all of these factors can have an impact on excavation considerations in an urban landscape. When digging below the groundwater table, these conditions, along with concerns associated with groundwater drawdown requirements, discharge limitations, groundwater contamination, property limits, adjacent buildings and subsidence concerns, can lead an experienced dewatering contractor to consider diverse installation methodology and equipment to allow construction to occur below the groundwater table.534 W. 29th St. New York, N.Y.There are many things that must be considered when constructing a new high-rise building within a small property footprint measuring 25 ft (7.6 m) wide by 80 ft (24.4 m) in length. When you take into account that the foundation needs to go several feet below the groundwater table and that there are two existing multistory buildings with shallower foundations on either side of the proposed structure, this task now becomes much more difficult. Consideration of geology, groundwater levels, depths of excavation and shoring for the excavation becomes critical to the success of the project. On a regular basis, dewatering contractors confront similar situations in congested cities where available real estate is limited.To minimize the negative impacts of construction dewatering, it is important to mitigate the potential effects of construction dewatering to the surrounding buildings, sidewalks, underground structures, tunnels, subways and other existing infrastructure. Such an instance occurred at the project located at 534 W. 29 St. in New York City. On this particular project, the required drawdown was greater than the typical 15 ft (4.6 m) of suction lift, so a vacuumed can pump system was utilized. The tubing was connected to a vacuumed perimeter dewatering well-point system, which is a predrainage system that is installed prior to the start of excavation for the underpinning of the adjacent structures and for the overall foundation. Each well-point, which was composed of a PVC pipe that was 1.5 in (38 mm) in diameter by 25 ft (7.6 m) long, was drilled to a depth of about 23 ft (7 m) using a hollow stem auger and was installed around the perimeter at a centerto- center spacing of about 7.67 ft (2.3 m). In lieu of a traditional perimeter collection header, and to allow for greater flexibility for the contractor, the well-points were interconnected to a modified vacuum can pump system utilizing ¾ in (19 mm) drop tubes that were “spaghetti” around the perimeter."

"A pile installation and load testing program on driven tapered piles was undertaken at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City for the extension of the existing Terminal 4. As part of the program, dynamic testing by means of the Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) was performed on several preliminary test piles as well as production piles. The results of the dynamic tests and subsequent static load tests were reviewed to develop an understanding of the pile-soil response of a tapered pile during driving and after setup. Pile setup occurred as a result of increase in shaft resistance with virtually no increase in toe resistance. More than 150 tons of additional capacity was gained after the setup time.The capacities measured during driving from the PDA are typically used as the basis for determining the pile driving set criteria, with the required initial driving capacities determined largely by the contractor’s experience. An improved appreciation of the setup phenomenon is required to better refine the driving criteria at the end of initial driving such that the required ultimate capacities can be obtained, with reasonable confidence, after a period of setup.This paper presents interpretation of pile-soil behavior from Case Pile Wave Analysis Program (CAPWAP) analyses and discusses the mechanism of increased capacity as a result of setup effects. Time-dependent capacity gain as a result of setup effects should be based on the extrapolation of the shaft resistance component rather than the total pile capacity as is commonly practiced. Prediction of pile performance using this approach was in good agreement with observed static and dynamic load test results.IntroductionTapered piles have been adopted for various projects at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFKIA) since the late 1940’s. Initially timber piles were used exclusively, with steel Monotube piles being used from at least the 1980’s (Horvath and Trochalides, 2004). The steel Tapertube pile was developed in the mid-1990’s and has commonly been used in recent construction (Brusey and Yin, 2008). The Tapertube piles used for this project consisted of a 25 foot long tapered section that was 8 inches in diameter at the tip and 18 inches in diameter at the top. An 18 inch diameter straight pipe was welded above the tapered section."

The increasing demand for renewable energy has attracted attention to energy geostructures as means of extracting clean geothermal energy from the ground. To further advance the understanding of soilstructure interaction in energy piles analytical solutions considering the self-weight of the pile were derived. These solutions were then incorporated in recently-derived thermomechanical weightless solutions to provide comprehensive analytical solutions for axial displacement, strain and stress in single energy piles. This was accomplished by comparing responses of energy pile under different loading scenarios that reflect presence and absence of the self-weight. Results of mechanics-based analysis revealed that the self-weight of energy piles embedded in stiff soils has no significant contribution to displacement, strain and stress that develop under thermo-mechanical loads. Overall, the significance of the self-weight contribution depends on the magnitude of thermal load as well as the soil-pile interface stiffness. The stiffness of end restraints imposed to the pile head and tip were also found to play an important role in contribution of self-weight in induced thermomechanical stresses in energy piles.

"A rapidly growing company in the northern US needed a large auditorium built into a dolomite bedrock hillside. The structure required an 80-foot-deep earth retention system independent of the auditorium foundation and superstructure. Allowable wall movements were limited to less than two inches. A 60-foot-tall permanent shotcreted soil and rock nail wall was designed for excavation support. The soil and rock nail wall utilized both active (post-tensioned) and passive nails, with capacities and installation angles optimized to address varying soil and rock conditions and to support heavy surcharges. The wall was configured with three two-foot-wide benches to facilitate controlled blasting and removal of more than two million cubic yards of soil, limestone and dolomite bedrock, and featured a permanent cast-in-place concrete face and a robust waterproofing and drainage system. A 20-foot-high reinforced concrete retaining wall was required at the top of the soil and rock nail wall to raise grades, resulting in a large surcharge.Design of the soil and rock nail wall was initiated less than three months before the start of construction, requiring expedited geotechnical explorations, analyses, design, and construction that would occur simultaneously. Design changes were made to address the discovery of a weak clay residuum seam at depth running along the base of the excavation, as well as significant changes to the building footprint made after the start of construction. Extensive performance monitoring was conducted during construction to measure vibrations and movements.Introduction and Project BackgroundA fast-growing company in the northern United States had a need for 600,000 square foot, 11,000 seat auditorium as part of its campus expansion. The auditorium was built underground, into a hillside to preserve the views of rolling terrain and farmland beyond. It featured a green roof and rockwork facing that mimicked regional geologic formations. "In September 2011, Menard Oceania (MO) was engaged by Mac Mahon John Holland Joint Venture (MJHJV) to provide ground improvement solution for the $34bn Ichthys LNG development. With close to 400,000m2 of mangrove swampland set to be reclaimed and improved, this project was a great opportunity to showcase the technical, commercial and environmental benefits that Dynamic Replacement (DR) ground Improvement technique can provide. The ground improvement works involved complete design and construction for the Ichthys LNG site located at Blaydin Point on a low lying peninsula in Darwin Harbour. Dynamic replacement and stone columns technique were selected to treat intertidal mangrove mud to achieve required bearing strength, stability and limit settlement to an acceptable levels. The site is underlain by a 3m to 5m thick layer of highly organic mangrove muds with very soft shear strength ranging from 0kPa to 12kPa at depth. The site is exposed to daily sea water level tidal variations of up to 8m, which created significant constructability constraints and slope instability risks. This paper presents the design philosophy, the process involved in the selection of the construction methods, the site constraints encountered during the works and a review of the results achieved, quality control and post constructions performance.INTRODUCTIONInpex Browse, Ltd (Inpex) and its partner Total are developing the Ichthys gas field to pipe gas to onshore facilities at Blaydin Point on the south side of East Arm in Darwin Harbour. The proposed LNG plant consists of gas receiving facilities, 2 x 4.2Mtpa nominal capacity LNG trains, LPG and condensate production facilities, product storage and export facilities, a module offload facility (MOF), a flare pad (FP) and associated off plot facilities.The proposed on-shore facilities are located on extremely soft intertidal mangrove muds, therefore an appropriate ground improvement was required to achieve required strength and stability of site works and limit long term settlement to an acceptable level.Various ground improvement techniques were studied to select the most suitable for the ground conditions and site constraints encountered at the Blaydin point site. Dynamic replacement technique was selected for onshore section to improve soft mangrove mud to depths of 5.5m and Stone Columns (SC) technique was selected for MOF off-shore section to improve intertidal deposits to a depth of 2.5m.This paper presents DR design and construction works performed between December 2012 and August 2013 at Flare Pad Area."

"There is an old joke at Moretrench that defines dewatering as “that element of an underground construction project, which, when disregarded, will generate the low bidder.” Sigmund Freud wrote that all jokes are true, and the kernel of truth behind this one is that dewatering is often misunderstood or neglected until the last possible moment in the life of a project. The purpose of this article is to describe commonly used dewatering methods and to clear up a pervasive but fundamental misunderstanding about how to determine the amount of dewatering effort required for a project. The Tools of DewateringDewatering may be divided into two broad categories: (1) methods that remove water from the excavation after it has already entered and (2) methods that seek to exclude or intercept the water before it reaches the excavation. The former is generally self-performed by general or earth moving contractors using sumps and ditches, while the latter is usually done by a specialty contractor. SumpsProperly installed sumps can be an effective and economical way to control water inflow into a site. In this technique, groundwater is allowed to enter the site before being pumped away. Advantages of this method include lost cost, easy availability of equipment and the fact that a general contractor can self-perform the dewatering. However, caution should be used when deciding whether to use this method, and consideration should be given to the following factors:1. How will the soil behave under seepage forces? Will it run, potentially causing ground loss?2. How much groundwater lowering is required? If the groundwater only needs to be lowered a few feet, using sumps will be much more practical than for a situation that requires significant drawdown.3. Will the excavation subgrade soften or otherwise be damaged by allowing water to run over it?4. Is my workforce skilled enough to implement and manage the sumping plan?In the photo, the sump is capturing groundwater that has already entered the excavation by traveling under the sheets. In this instance, the house in the background of the photo was eventually purchased by the project owner after sustaining damage due to ground loss."

"The Deep Mixing Method (DMM) was employed to raise and support the LPV (Lake Pontchartrain and Vicinity) -111 Levee in New Orleans. Even using innovative technologies, the tight schedule to achieve the 100 year elevation by June 1, 2011 was a daunting endeavor. The size and scope of DMM proposed for LPV-111 was on a scale never attempted outside of Japan. Over 1.65 million cubic yards of DMM was installed. LPV-111 is adjacent to the Bayou Sauvage Wildlife Refuge, which is the largest urban National Wildlife refuge in the United States. By utilizing DMM to control settlement and improve stability of the taller levee, side slopes were steepened from the conventional 1V:4H to 1V:2.85H, thus avoiding encroachment into the Bayou Sauvage and reducing the amount of clay needed for the completed levee. The COE utilized Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) for this contract. The ECI process allowed for input from the DMM contractor, TREVIICOS South, in order to optimize equipment resources and material requirements. This paper gives an overview of the extensive DMM requirements for LPV-111 and explains the benefits of the ECI process.IntroductionDuring hurricane Katrina the levee that constitutes LPV-111 was overtopped and breached in several locations. The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) was presented with the task of increasing the level of the flood protection around New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina to the 100- Year hydraulic grade - the level of protection that provides risk reduction from a storm surge that has a 1% chance of being equaled or exceeded in any given year - and the firm project completion deadline was June 2011.LPV-111 is located in East New Orleans and a large portion of the levee is adjacent to the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge. The levee could not encroach on this area. This provided a limited footprint for the levee and made construction of conventional levee difficult, if not impossible. The total length of the project was 5.3 miles. Included in the project was the rehabilitation of one main pumping station and one smaller pump station for water management within the refuge. Short sections of “T” wall were used at the tie in at the Lake Borgne Surge Barrier, the main pump station and the CSX Railroad crossing"

The foundation solution for a data centre building in Sydney, Australia comprised two alternatives, the first of which incorporated the use of CFA piles founded in rock at approx. 27m depth to support column working loadings of approx. 7.5MN, and the second utilising rapid impact compaction with a raft foundation of 1.0m thick concrete slab. Soil conditions comprised 1m of fill over 3 to 4m of sands varying from loose to dense consistency, underlain by very stiff clays overlying the rock. A creative solution incorporating Rapid Impact Compaction to improve the loose soils in conjunction with a piled raft solution was proposed. Piles proposed under the raft were Atlas Drilled Displacement piles which offered advantages of displacement pile performance and savings in time and material costs. The piled raft solution was developed in consultation with the consulting structural engineer, combining the skills of the piling contractor and consulting engineer to the benefit of the project. This paper describes the development and design aspects of the piled raft solution adopted for the project.

Zhengzhou Yellow River Highway Bridge, which is under construction, has a total length of 5550 meters with bored cast-in-place concrete piles as the foundations of its piers which have a diameter of 2.20 m with a length of approximately 65 m. This paper attempts, through the introduction of the said bridge's footing pile design and construction, mainly to give an account of the following points: 1) experiment and research on deep friction pile with a large diameter, 2) calculation of vertical carrying capacity of the pile with a large diameter, 3) analy­sis of horizontal forces the footing-piles of the column-shaped piers, 4) application of normal and reverse-circulation rotary drilling technologies to the construction of bored cast-in-place concrete piles with a large diameter and 5) applying super-sonic impulse on destruction detective device to examine the quality of the pile concrete.

"An underground reservoir was to be constructed at Doha in Qatar. Simsima lime stone is present at the bottom. When the reservoir is empty, there will be uplift at the bottom but this will change to downward load when it is full. The rock at the bottom had high bearing capacity to resist downward load. But uplift had to be resisted by piles or anchors. The reservoir has a size of 120mx80m. Shrinkage and creep of concrete coupled with thermal contraction imposed a horizontal movement of 26mm on the extreme piles. So, piles have to accommodate this as well. This unique situation needed a unique solution. The solution was to provide piles with flexible high tensile strands to take tension. An annular space near the head of the pile would facilitate horizontal movement as well. Compression load was directly passed on to the raft bearing on rock.INTRODUCTIONAn underground reservoir for storage of drinking water was to be constructed at Doha, Qatar. The reservoir was proposed to have a plan size of 120m x 80m. Clear height inside the reservoir was proposed as 17.2m, from the bottom of roof to the top of bottom raft. Overall height of the reservoir at the outlet from the top of the roof to the bottom of raft was to be 21.2m. For the sake of inspection and in order to prevent pollution from the surroundings a gallery was planned around the reservoir. This could accommodate pipelines as well. This gallery was 3.0m wide on three sides and 8.4m wide on the outlet side.The gallery had removable gratings as cover in order to facilitate maintenance. Capacity of the reservoirwas proposed to be 40million gallons. The reservoir is divided into four compartments with baffle walls in each one for water circulation. Roof of the reservoir is kept at 300mm above ground level. There are two levels of car park on top of the reservoir. Top of the reservoir roof is at +14.35. Bottom varies from - 6.68 to -7.08. Lowest water table is at +6.00. Concrete structure of the reservoir was designed by a local consultant. The Navayuga Engineering Company was entrusted with the construction.
