"FOREWORDThe International Nickel Company of Canada has built four ore concentrating plants since 1950. The fifth and largest is now under construction. In each successive plant, the level and type of instrument control and sophistication of control techniques have increased as experience was gained. The type of control progress is illustrated in Fig. 1.At Frood-Stobie the high degree of instrumentation and the level of control were made possible by the constant evolution of techniques and improved instrument hardware technology. We have established in practice concepts that are sound, although many modifications to instrument sensor types and locations 1-rere often necessary. It is generally true that at other existing Inco mills, it is possible to run ""all manual"" for protracted lengths of time because of operator availability and dependence. The Frood-Stobie Mill is the exception, and it is the degree of reliability of the instrumentation hardware and level of maintenance that has made this possible."

"Reactive pyrrhotite tailings were agglomerated using the Cold Bond Tailings Agglomeration (CBTA) process with low cost binders; Portland Cement and fly ash. Various chemical additives, were used to retard acid mine drainage (AMD), including acid neutralizers, surfactants, sealants, and bactericides, which were encapsulated into the agglomerates. The choice of these additives was based on their low cost, low toxicity, and environmental friendliness. The main objective of the study was to examine the long term stability of these reactive tailings agglomerates towards AMD when used as aggregates for disposal in underground paste backfill.A carefully controlled kinetic stability test was carried out using specially designed humidity cells suitable for testing pellets. Using the humidity cell test method a 20-30 year AMD test may be accelerated to 50 weeks. During this period the following parameters were monitored: pH, redox potential, conductivity, sulphate, acidity, and dissolved metals.Results indicated that most of the encapsulated additives were successful in retarding AMD, while the control samples produced significant amounts of acid generation. The water soluble surfactant Enviroseal, and the sodium silicate sealant were very effective as a long term retardant for acid generation reactions in the sulphidic tailings when exposed to oxygen, water and iron-oxidizing bacteria.IntroductionThe sulphidic material discharged from concentrators becomes reactive upon exposure to air and/or water. Pyrrhotite (Fe0 S0_1) and pyrite tailings in particular which are discharged from the beneficiation process in the mining and mineral processing activities consist of finely ground particles. Upon exposure to oxygen and moisture, the tailings become reactive due to the instability of the metal sulphide minerals present which undergo spontaneous oxidation, thereby producing a weak sulphuric acid. Therefore, the long-term behaviour of the tailings can have a significant impact on the environment, due to acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD is created during natural atmospheric weathering when leaching action (natural and bacterial) conditions are present in the process wastes discarded during the mining and milling of sulphur bearing ores, and consequently it plays a major role in surface water chemistry."

Many mines combine open pit with underground mining, and on many occasions the underground mine is an extension of the open-pit. In these circumstances the decision about where the open-pit stops and the underground starts is crucial and driven by many factors. This paper looks at some of the ways that this cut-over can be calculated and specifically examines the calculation of it using modern mine optimization software. The paper provides a case study which will review various outcomes using these techniques, and demonstrates the influence of various factors on the optimal transition cut-over point. Biographies Mr Finch is a Divisional Manager and a Principal consultant at Snowden Mining Industry Consultants in Vancouver, Canada. At Snowden Mr Finch leads a team of engineers that perform mining engineering studies for projects around the world. Prior to joining Snowden Mr Finch was the Mining Manager at Barrick?s Henty mine in Tasmania Australia. Prior to that Mr Finch has held a variety of roles in both consulting and operations working for various organisations at various levels in the Asia Pacific region. Mr Finch gained a bachelor?s degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Queensland in 1986, and a bachelor?s degree in Economics from the University of Queensland in 1993. His expertise is in mine planning, mine optimisation and mine management. Dr Elkington is a Consultant at Snowden Mining Industry Consultants in Perth, Australia. He is responsible for the design and implementation of Snowden?s proprietary optimization software products. Prior to joining Snowden Dr Elkington completed his PhD in Mine Optimisation at The University of Western Australia, and bachelor?s degrees in Engineering (Hons) and Commerce from The University of Western Australia. During the geological synthesis of the Réservoir Pipmuacan area (NTS 22E) by the Ministère des Ressources naturelles (Québec), several ilmenite-apatite occurrences, some well-known and some recently discovered, have been examined. These occurrences are hosted in the Lac-Saint-Jean and Labrieville AMCG anorthositic suites. The Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite (1160-1140 Ma), composed of multiple intrusions covering an extensive surface area, is characterized by labradorite plagioclase. The Labrieville Anorthositic Suite (1010-1008 Ma) is characterized by andesine plagioclase. It was previously known as the Labrieville Anorthosite, which was composed of a small isolated pluton located east of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite. However, new geochronological data and field observations indicate that the Labrieville Anorthositic Suite in fact includes several intrusive bodies, namely the La Hache Monzonite and the Mattawa Anorthosite. A series of major structures (Saint-Fulgence, Pipmuacan, and Chute-des-Passes deformation zones) and their conjugate faults played an important role in the emplacement of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite. The Saint-Fulgence deformation zone appears to have been involved in the emplacement of the Labrieville Anorthositic Suite. Oxide mineralizations are abundant in both anorthositic suites. Ilmenite, magnetite (± titaniferous), and apatite assemblages are found mostly in the labradorite-type anorthosites, while hemo-ilmenite, magnetite and apatite assemblages are associated only with the andesine-type anorthosites. Field works has revealed ilmenite-apatite mineralizations in a variety of settings, with grades reaching 48% TiO2, 16.2% P2O5, and 71.7% Fe2O3 (tot). Numerous oxide-bearing gabbronorites, often accompanied by or located near massive apatite-oxide accumulations (nelsonites), were discovered. Among these oxide-rich zones, breccia zones with anorthosite enclaves in an oxide matrix (ilmenite-magnetiteapatite) have been observed. Locally, ilmenite-apatite mineralization occurs as cumulate concentrations in ultramafic rocks. Evidence has been observed for immiscible magmas, for magmas differentiated from a mangerite or jotunite parent, and even for late magmas differentiated from the anorthosite magma itself (apatite-bearing anorthosite). Finally, the northern part of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite hosts sulfide and vanadium mineralizations associated with ilmenite-apatite enriched zones, with grades reaching 1.48% Cu, 1.22% Ni, 1.6% Cr2O5, 0.25% Co, and 0.52% V2O5.

Economic viability of base metal mining is complicated by a volatile market that can cause fluctuations in the growth and stability of the mining industry. Nickel is mined primarily for use in manufacturing industrial stainless steel and plating materials. It is essential that nickel production be sufficient to respond to current and future market demand. A Post-Pillar cut and fill mining complex is currently producing nickel sulfide in Northern Manitoba. From 2006 this area has shown a steady increase in the annual production, rising from 11 million pounds to 25 million pounds in 2010, and accounting for 33% of the total production for the Manitoba Operations. It is expected that fine-tuning the mining process can safely enhance ore recovery, improve production consistency, and increase economic viability of the deposit. The Post-Pillar Optimization study was initiated by the local technical and operational departments at the mine and analyzed from July 2010 to March 2011. The purpose of this study was to determine if portions of non-recoverable pillars can be slashed without jeopardizing pillar strength. This ideal case would optimize ore recovery and reduce variability in the ore mining rate. Numerical modeling and geo-mechanical material properties analyses, completed by the rock mechanics group, define the maximum drift width at 32 feet and the minimum pillar width at 18 feet. Thus, it was suggested that up to 3 feet could be slashed from two sides of the standard 24 foot pillars without damaging ground integrity. The field data collected indicates that additional ore could be recovered without compromising the safety of the workplace and the integrity of the complex. Consequently, technical and operational groups work jointly to achieve pillar optimization. Approximately 500,000 pounds of nickel was extracted from the complex via pillar optimization from July 2010 to March 2011. Economic analyses show the pillar optimization method developed for the mining complex is a proven, value-added opportunity. The mining complex remains a safe workplace and has retained ground integrity.

"The Great Dyke extends for 540 krn along strike, to unknown depth, and varies in width from 3 krn to 11 krn. Rb/Sr age determinations gives values of approximately 2470 Ma.The Dyke consists of a variety of mafic and ultramafic rocks, many altered to serpentinites. These include, from top to bottom, successions of gabbro/norites, pyroxenites, peridotiteslharzburgites, and dunites/picrites.The layers dip in from either margin, steepest at the edges (20°) and flattening toward the central sections. Four separate complexes are present. From north to south these are termed the Musengezi, Hartley, Selukwe and Wedza Complexes, and are described as 'boat-shaped' or 'pig-troughed'. All are similar in petrological sequences. Physiographically, the Dyke is spectacular in the north, where as a mountain range it meets the Zarnbezi Escarpment. Elsewhere in the central parts there is little surface expression and wide open treeless vleis. Dyke rocks cut through granite and schist belt terrain and are termed 'The Magnesia Belt'.Vast mineral resources exist. These include chrome, asbestos, platinoids, nickel, copper and gold. Up to eleven chrome seams numbered from top to bottom occur in the lower ultramafic sequences. Seams are narrow at 10 em to 30 em but of high grade. The platinum occurs 10 m to 40 m below the norite/pyroxenite contact.A 60 m wide zone of Light Sulfide Mineralization (LSM) of less than 1070 sulfides extends from the lower gabbronorites into the upper pyroxenites. In this LSM, four enriched zones carry up to 5% sulfides. The most widespread is termed the Main Sulfide Zone (MSZ), below which is No. 2, No.3 and No.4 Sulfide Zones. The MSZ carrying pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite is a multielement ore with components of PGE (pt-Pd-Rh), nickel, copper and cobalt, and gold and silver.Extensive exploration programs have been carried out and the intention is to begin large-scale mining. However, with Russia supplying metals to the western markets, South Africa's cutback on production, and an end to the Cold War, delays have arisen."

Abstract-Ghana, a major West African gold-producing country, took a crucial step in 1986 to allow private participation in mining ventures that had hitherto been state controlled and starved of funds. This decision has led to a three-fold rise in gold production with substantial local and foreign capital once again flowing into exploration and mining projects. Though the rise in gold export is due primarily to increased production from large mines such as Ashanti Goldfields Corporation, Billiton Bogosu Gold, Tebrebie Goldfields and Ghana Australia Gold that work primary lode gold deposits on quartz veins and Banket conglomerates, a fair amount of gold comes from placer gold mining from which two new mines have been developed at Kwabeng and Bonte during the current gold boom. Also, placer gold mining is important locally because the lower capital outlay required for its development enables many entrepreneurs to operate small concessions and provide employment for a large pool of unskilled labor. Placer gold exploration and development in Ghana is labor-intensive. Pitting is the most used method although few employ the mechanized ("Banka") drilling. The advantages and disadvantages of the two approaches in the local setting are discussed. The gravel is normally sluiced and the gold recovered by amalgamation. The drawbacks to successful placer gold exploration in Ghana have been attributed to lapses in execution of exploration programs (Dzigbodi- Adjimah and Arhin, 1993; Dzigbodi-Adjimah and Gawu, 1994). However, the failure to recognize and set time frameworks and financial limitations for the various stages of placer gold exploration have spelt the doom of some projects. It is critical that the characteristics of the placer gold deposit be determined by efficient and cost effective means. A planned exploration supported by adequate flow of funds saves costs and leads to success. This article discusses the current Ghanaian situation and presents proposals from case studies for planning and budgeting placer gold exploration programs for use in similar settings.

"Interest in the use of particle-based ore sorting has increased significantly with recent advances in sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. Particle-based ore sorting has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from mines while delivering higher grades to the mill, as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore sorting and associated reductions in energy, water, and consumables utilization. However, layout significantly affects the installed cost of a processing plant, and the impacts on layout from fitting an ore sorting circuit into the plant plan need to be carefully considered. This paper examines processing plant layout considerations that play an important role in ore sorting projects, including additional crushing and screening requirements, transport of rejected material back to the waste stockpile (mine fleet requirements), and effects on the processing plant footprint. ¦ KEYWORDS Cold climates, Ore sorting, Plant layout RÉSUMÉ L’intérêt porté à l’utilisation du tri granulométrique du minerai a considérablement augmenté au vu des récents progrès réalisés en matière de technologies de triage et des capacités supérieures par unité. Based on the deep burial depth of coal deposits in Huainan-Huaibei coalfields, Anhui Province, China, this paper puts forward the concept of partitioning of coal deposits according to occurrence conditions. This process is controlled by tectonic forces. The classification scheme of coal deposits exploration types is presented according to occurrence and mining conditions of coal deposits as viewed from the perspective of deep coal exploration properties. The principles underlying geological exploration services for the resources development are incorporated. There are six exploration types of coal deposits in the Huainan and Huaibei coalfields. Exploration models tailored to different types of exploration have been established and exploration strategies corresponding to different exploration models have been proposed. Steady-state temperature must be measured for the deep heat-harm type of coal deposit. The sealing coring of mine gas samples should be performed for the high mine gas type of coal deposit. For coal deposits with complex structures, such as those located beneath nappes, coal-controlling structural styles must be performed. Existing data on shallow districts are very important to the research of folds and fault-block types of coal deposits beneath and peripheral to old and existing coal mine areas. For the types of fault-block coal deposits hidden by thick Cenozoic cover, particular attention must be paid to comprehensive use of research on regional coal occurrence law and geophysical methods. The present work promotes the exploration level of coal deposits in Huainan-Huaibei coalfields to best meet the need for sustainable development of the coal industry.

"Abstract-Grass roots exploration has an emphasis on good precision at low (sub-economic) concentrations of an element, in order to identify "anomalies" which may lead to drilling targets. Although it is wise to have well-defined quality controls in place during early stage sampling, the control procedures at this stage tend to be rudimentary. When a deposit warrants detailed delineation, the need for accurate geological characterization and assaying of ore-grade rock must be supported by appropriate quality control procedures.As a project returns more promising results, and the likelihood of the project warranting a prefeasibility study increases, it is time to tighten quality assurance requirements and quality control protocols. Delays in instituting adequate quality control and verification procedures may lead to costly remedial actions that can also delay completion of the prefeasibility or feasibility study. Sometimes, as a project matures, the quality control and quality assurance aspects fail to keep pace with the changing nature of the work: an increasing emphasis on precise and accurate assaying of oregrade rock.A resource model is like a house of cards. The foundation of the house is the geological observations, the sampling methods and the geological interpretations performed upon those samples. Upon the sampling, which includes all the sub-sampling steps of sample preparation, rest the assay results. The quality of the assays can be no better than the quality of the sampling. Good assaying technique will preserve all biases and imprecisions introduced during sampling and sample preparation; it cannot remove them. If the sub-samples and/or assays are bad and must be redone, all the succeeding levels of the house of cards must also be rebuilt, or at least patched up.From geological observations, a geological interpretation is built, the quality of which is critical to the construction of an acceptable resource model. Geological elements are difficult to assess, and are not discussed here; they are dependent upon the expertise of the geologists involved. Geological knowledge contributes essential quality control elements to resource/reserve determinations (Sinclair and Postolski, 1999; Postolski and Sinclair, 1999).This paper consists of five sections: (1) overview of quality control protocols, (2) maintaining quality control of databases, (3) quality control of drill sampling, (4) optimizing crushing and grinding requirements, and (5) quality control of assay data acquisition."

The Phelps Dodge El Paso Rod Mill produces approximately 2.4 million pounds per day of copper rod from a casting and rolling operation. The newly formed rod is treated to remove mill scale and oxides using a sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide solution which is bled periodically when the copper concentration reaches 30-35 g/L. The bleed solution is heated to 75° C to destroy the residual peroxide. Copper is then recovered in a 270 cell EMEW electrowinning plant. Clean acid is also regenerated in the EMEW plant and is returned to the rod cleaning circuit. The EMEW plant commissioned in January 2006, has two operators and replaces a copper sulfate plant with fourteen operators. The EMEW plant has a capacity of 1700 kg/day of cathode copper at 2.1 kWh/kg copper deposited. The electrowinning plant operates in closed circuit with the rod mill returning up to 2600 kg/day of sulfuric acid resulting in zero discharge. Use of dimensionally stable anodes (DSA®) ensures that the acid quality is maintained in the closed loop operation. The operating conditions, performance and plant experience of the EMEW copper and acid recovery plant are discussed.

THE problems relating to the construction and use o{ mining equipment are basically the same as those pertaining to equipment in other industries. It is true that much mining equipment is subjected to an unusually severe combination of shock, high stresses, abrasive wear, and corrosive ? conditions, but in other industries, also, equipment must operate under similar adverse conditions, so that their experiences may readily be applied to the problems of the mining industry. Steel and iron are for obvious reasons the most suitable materials for the construction of the greater part of the equipment used in the mining industry. For a large percentage of uses, the ordinary plain carbon-steels and ordinary or unalloyed cast-iron are, and probably will continue to be for a long rime, entirely satisfactory materials. There are, however, many. conditions which cannot be satisfactorily taken care of by these materials, and alloy steels and irons must be used where the greatest possible economy is desired. In general, alloy steels and irons are used where it is necessary or economically desirable to use materials possessing properties superior to plain carbon-steel or ordinary cast-irons, such as: (a) better strength (b) better wear resistance (c) better corrosion resistance (d) better resistance to high temperatures (e) better resistance to low temperatures or combinations of two or more of these advantages. There are also conditions where materials having other special properties are required, such as, for example, certain magnetic or electrical properties for electrical machinery; but in the great majority of cases, one or more of the five advantages listed are the most desired.

In early 2007, it became apparent that with changing concentrate feeds, the magnesium (Mg) load projected for CEZinc starting in 2009 and beyond would quadruple and overwhelm the current Mg process bleed capacity. A project was started, following design for six sigma (DFSS) standards, to select both the optimal process and to evaluate its target capacity for the Mg bleed circuit. The economic and process risks of under or over-designing while Mg reduction efforts were underway at the mines also needed to be evaluated. This paper describes the project methodology, the impact on the plant, and some potential optimizations for CEZinc's basic zinc sulphate (BZS) Mg bleed process.

The rougher flotation stage is used to reject liberated gangue at a coarse size. Base and precious metals due to their high specific gravity tend to recycle in the grinding circuit and report to the flotation circuit at a finer size than the gangue from which it is being separated. Generally liberation levels of greater than 50% are achieved in roughing and thus a portion of the feed can be immediately upgraded to final concentrate. The proportion increasing as the amount of liberated mineral in the feed increases. Scalping out concentrate from the rougher can reduce the size of the subsequent regrind and cleaner circuits. Examples of alternative process design for circuits demonstrates that you don’t need large volumes to effectively recover all of the minerals – you need smart flotation. Several case studies will be presented where circuits can be significantly reduced in size by designing smarter – not larger. This paper describes case studies to test the amenability of the Jameson Cell to produce final concentrate from rougher feed. Metallurgical performance and plant design implications are discussed. Froth flotation has been used extensively for mineral concentration for over 100 years. Although the flotation cell design has changed, it has generally simply increased in capacity rather than increase in efficiency. Cell capacities of over 600 m3 are now being used in rougher flotation particularly for the lower grade ores where the amount of surface area for flotation is deemed less significant than the required volume. The plant design volume in rougher flotation comes from laboratory batch flotation tests and/or pilot plants. The volume required for the plant is calculated based on the laboratory residence time multiplied by a scale- up factor. Examples of laboratory to plant scale-up design are given in Dunne et al. (2010 part 2). The factors are usually between 2 and 3. A laboratory residence time of 10 minutes would equate to a plant design residence time of 25 minutes using a 2.5 factor. The volume of the required flotation cells can then be calculated using the design tonnage and volumetric throughput. This scale-up factor takes into account the differences in performance between batch flotation efficiency and full scale plant. The differences are likely related to inefficiencies of bubble particle contact in large cells as well as froth recovery, which is essentially complete in a batch cell. Flotation cells, such as the Jameson Cells, are smarter designs that improve bubble/particle collection, bubble/pulp separation efficiency and operate with high froth recovery rather than simply getting bigger. The Jameson Cell was designed on the principal of improving the collection efficiency of fine particles by separating the contact zone from the separation zone and having the bubbles generated by the plunging jet shearing and entraining air. This means the method of bubble generation is not impacted by the wear of mechanical equipment as it the case in other flotation devices. Jameson Cells make bubbles less than 600 micron in size under most operating conditions (Ding, 2016).

This new generation of digital instruments have embedded microcontrollers that provide highly accurate and reliable measurement of geotechnical behaviour in real world units that can be immediately interpreted. Digital measurements can be transmitted across existing mine-wide wireless communication networks, interfaced directly with infra-red enabled PDA?s or PC?s, and parsed to memory by low-cost data-loggers.

North Carolina is the leading state in the USA in feldspar, mica, and spodumene production. Mixed feldspar, spodumene, mica and quartz are mined from hard rock, open pit deposits and recovered by flotation from the fresh pegmatite type ores. Potash feldspar, mica, clay and quartz are recovered from weathered decomposed pegmatites. The North Carolina State University has a Minerals Research Laboratory in Asheville with trained personnel and flexible pilot plant equipment. The flowsheets for the feldspar, spodumene and mica producing companies and for large phosphate and glass sand flotation plants were developed and tested in Asheville. Examples and problems of pegmatite flotation are demonstrated with flowsheets and slides.

Formability of extruded round AZ31 magnesium alloy tubes with different manganese concentrations was evaluated by performing bending tests and measuring strain along the length of the tubes during the bending process. It was found that an increase in the manganese content from 0.3 % to 0.7% did not exert any significant effect on the values of yield stress, elongation, or compression to fracture. However the hardness tended to increase and the UTS decreased. The compressive ductility was significantly lower than tensile ductility for all manganese concentrations. Consequently, the formability of tubes decreased, causing cracks in areas where compression strain occurred during bending. It was also found that a larger strain occurred in the latter half of the region along the length of tube between the clamp-end and the tube-positioning block. Within this region, alloy tubes with higher manganese concentrations, 0.5 and 0.7 %, there was a clear strain peak within the strain profile, while for the 0.3 % Mn alloy, a more uniform strain profile was exhibited, indicating a more uniform deformation. This was confirmed by microstructural analysis of the specimens.

THE object of this paper is to review recent geological work in the Cariboo district and to present notes on the recent development of mineral properties. The Geological Survey has done considerable work in the Cariboo district, extending over a period of years. In 1885 and 1886, Bowman (1) mapped the geology of a large area. In 1922 and 1923, Johnston and Uglow (2) mapped Barkerville area in some detail and prepared a report on the placer and lode gold deposits. In 1931 and 1932, Cockfield and Walker (3) mapped the Quesnel Forks area. In 1933, Hanson reported on Willow River area ( 4), and in 1934 made a detailed examination of part of the Barkerville area (5). In 1935, Lang commenced work on the Keithley area, lying to the southeast of the Barkerville area, and in 1936 published a preliminary re-port (6). The work on Keithley area was continued in 1936 by both authors of the present paper. As the results of the earlier work have been published, this paper will be concerned largely with Keithley area, that is, the part of the region lyinp between longitudes 121° 00' and 121° 30', and latitudes 52° 45' and 53° 00 . This area lies astride Cariboo (Swamp) river and extends north some 17 miles from Keithley, which is situated near the southern border of the map-area (see sketch-map). Points in the western part of the map-area are fairly accessible. A road extends from Barkerville to upper Cunningham creek, and from this a trail crosses Snowshoe plateau to Keithley. A second trail from this road leads to the lower falls on Cariboo river. From this road, a branch road leads to upper Antler creek, with a trail leading from this branch road to Keithley. Part of this western half of the area is made up of the Snowshoe plateau, which constitutes a gently rolling surface, at or above timber line, where trails are largely unnecessary.
