"The microstructures of AlSi10Mg foundry alloy in permanent mould (PM) and high pressure vacuum die (HPVD) castings were analyzed and compared. The as-cast microstructures of two castings mainly consisted of eutectic silicon particles, primary Mg2Si and Fe-rich intermetallic phases. The surface layer in HPVD castings, which has a unique feature and different structures, was carefully characterized. The dimension variation of microstructural phases along the cross section in PM samples is less than that in HPVD samples, although the size of microstructural phases in PM samples was much larger than that in HPVD samples. The mechanical properties of PM and HPVD samples were evaluated on as-cast and T6-treated conditions. The tensile properties of HPVD castings are remarkable better than those of PM castings on the as-cast condition. The T6 heat treatment greatly improves the tensile strength of PM castings while it has limited impact on the tensile strength of HPVD castings.INTRODUCTION The AlSi10Mg alloys are widely applied to the high pressure die casting (HPD) and high pressure vacuum die casting (HPVD). In the HPD process, the melt is injected into the die cavity under a high speed (30–50 m/s in the gate velocity for aluminum alloys), and solidified under a high pressure (up to 200 MPa in the cavity) and with a high cooling rate (up to ~103 Ks–1) (Gourlay, Laukli & Dahle, 2007; Ji, Wang, Watson & Fan, 2013). This results in a unique microstructure feature that is different to other casting processes under gravity. One major concern in HPD castings is porosity due to trapped air in the cavity (Ji et al., 2013), which seriously restricts the application of a heat treatment on the improvement of mechanical prosperities because of the formation of blisters on casting surfaces. For the process improvement, the high pressure vacuum die casting was developed in 1980s (Uchida, 2009). In this process, the melt is injected into the die cavity under reduced pressure (vacuum), which greatly reduces gas porosity in castings due to effectively avoiding the trapped air. Consequently, HPVD castings are heat-treatable without the formation of blisters on castings surface during heat treatment. The HPVD process has been widely applied to produce high quality structural castings in recent years attributed to reliable vacuum system development (Uchida, 2009). However, the microstructure features of HPVD castings are not systemically characterized yet."

"The study of the geology of Mayo district began in 1900 with R. G. McConnell's exploration of Stewart river; and has been carried on intermittently for the Geological Survey of Canada by J. Keele; D. D. Cairnes; W. E. Cockfield; C. H. Stockwell; and the writer. It has revealed a thick group of schists; quartzites; and crystalline limestones; almost certainly Precambrian in age; placed in the Yukon group; and a group of younger intrusive igneous rocks varying in composition from granite to gabbro. These include bodies of many sizes and forms; from stocks 8 miles across to small dykes and sills.Prospecting in the district began about 1897 and has disclosed the presence of gold, silver, lead, tungsten, tin, zinc, antimony, copper, arsenic, manganese, and mercury, both in placer and lode deposits . Of these metals gold, silver, and tungsten have been produced from placer deposits, and silver, lead, and gold from lodes. This paper deals only with some structural relationships of the lode deposits, generally referred to as the silver-lead veins, which have yielded the greater part of the mineral production of the area. From 1938 to 1941 the geological mapping of the district for publication on a scale of 4 miles to 1 inch was carried out by the writer, and the ideas expressed here are based on this work. No comprehensive detailed study of the silver-lead veins has been made, but the mapping has brought to light several important facts. The rocks of the Yukon group, although of a striking sameness throughout their section, can be divided into a number of distinguishable members by means of which the main structures can be traced . The most important and readily distinguishable rock in the group is referred to here as the quartzite member. This is composed of quartzite and schist in about equal proportions. The quartzite is resistant to erosion and forms most of the outcrops of the'member and the peaks of the Gustavus mountains and mount Haldane (Lookout)."

The paper addresses the application of XPAC AutoScheduler at the Fort Hills Energy Oil Sands Project to complete fast turn around ?what if? scenario testing of different mine schedules. Traditional scheduling approaches involve engineers making a ?best guess? at the required mining sequence, loading this sequence into a scheduling package and testing the results to determine if the schedule meets corporate objectives. This process is iterative and can be very time consuming. Autoscheduling techniques, on the other hand, are based on the engineer pre defining the mining rules and constraints of the deposit. The software then automatically selects a sequence of mining which the schedule should try and achieve, based off specified corporate objectives. Under this system the engineer is able to adjust the objectives and rules to evaluate numerous scheduling scenarios quickly and easily. An XPAC AutoScheduler model was built, documented, and implemented by Runge and Petro-Canada Oil Sands Inc. personnel in a month. It is currently being used by Petro-Canada Oil Sands Inc. to run multiple schedule scenarios, most taking less than ten minutes configure and ten minutes to schedule. The results of each schedule are tabulated with supporting graphs on; the bitumen grade profile, strip ratio, ore inventories and mined tonnage. In addition to this, the block model may be animated to show the progression of the resources mining the schedules.

"Mr. Chairman and fellow CMP members, most of these remarks will be made with particular reference to copper concentrate but the basics apply generally to other metal concentrates as well.For very good reasons, using copper as an example, smelting capacity usually is located either close to mine production or close to areas of high copper consumption. The mine producer can add on smelting capacity to insure that the copper in his concentrate can be processed into a marketable form under more or less controlled conditions including costs. On the other hand, the consumer wishing to assure a better supply of copper likewise can build smelting capacity and offer treatment charges attractive enough to discourage mines from investing in their own facilities. In this regard, freight is an important factor. Bulk shipments from the heart of Africa with a large overland component are uneconomic whereas concentrate movements from Australia or South America compare favourably with smaller metal shipments.A mine project which incorporates smelting capacity, will often, through the presence of this capacity, encourage active exploration and development of additional concentrate production in the vicinity. The usual result is that new mines within reasonable distance of the smelter will be able to avoid the capital required to build their own smelting and refining facilities and that the existing facilities will expand to appreciate economies of scale."

The following guidelines have been recommended by the Diamond Exploration Best Practices Committee established by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. These guidelines are applicable to public companies and their consultants reporting diamond exploration results. In respect of these guidelines, Diamond Exploration Results are results derived from the initial activities undertaken to investigate a diamond bearing prospect or deposit, to generate tonnage, grade and value estimates that cannot be classified as a Mineral Resource or Mineral Reserve. They do not address the earlier stage reporting of geophysical, geochemical or kimberlite indicator mineral results. Public reports of Diamond Exploration Results relating to mineralization not classified as Mineral Resource or Mineral Reserve must address the confidence limits of the result and contain sufficient information to allow a considered and balanced judgement of the significance of the results. The objective of these guidelines is to assist public companies and consultants in making appropriate disclosure of diamond exploration results by reporting in a manner which is: ??Uniform within the diamond exploration industry; ??Consistent with reporting from other industry sectors; ??Comprehensive; ??Unambiguous. The guidelines are not prescriptive. Materiality is the overriding principle that determines the information that should be disclosed. However, where a company or consultant deviates from the guidelines, the disclosure or technical report should state the extent to which the guidelines have not been followed, and the reasons for the deviation. The guidelines do not in any way replace jurisdictional reporting requirements (For example, the requirement for Canadian reporting issuers to comply with Canadian Securities Administrators National Instrument 43-101 by having technical disclosure endorsed by a Qualified Person as defined in that legislation).

The aim of this study is to manufacture magnesium alloys with alkaline earth metal oxides (BeO, CaO, MgO or SrO) additions with the objectives of (1) ensuring safety during processing and applications by raising the ignition temperature and reducing oxidation, (2) protecting the environment by reducing or eliminating use of protective gases, (3) maintaining or improving elevated temperature properties with lower amount of Ca or Sr or rare earth metals when compared with conventionally developed high-temperature magnesium alloys, (4) developing cleaner strip casting and continuous casting processes without hot tearing and (5) obtaining all of these objectives without sacrificing mechanical properties or increasing the cost of magnesium alloys.

"The Jasper Gold mine in northern Saskatchewan produced a total mill feed of 140 127 tonnes at an average grade of 19.0 g/t Au. Both diamond drilling and chip samples from underground workings returned extremely high values, up to 12851 g/t (375 oz/T) Au over 0.10 meter from a chip sample. In the presence of such extremely high grades, the accurate estimation of reserves is a major problem.In the first part of this study, production data from the mine were used to evaluate the results of a variety of reserve estimation techniques in this environment. In two out of three cases studied, indicator kriging with assays cut to 342.9 g/t (10 oz/T) gave extremely good results. In the third case, however, indicator kriging gave unacceptable results. Instead, lognormal kriging of uncut data gave the best results.Secondly, from the same database, a number of drill-hole spacings were simulated, and reserves estimated from the simulations. As may be expected, the results of this analysis show increasingly better results with tighter drill-hole spacing. However, even with a 5 m by 5 m spacing the variation from actual grade was quite large. This is not a systematic under- or over-estimation of grade, rather a random scatter of results.The results of this study show very clearly the problems of deriving good estimates of reserves when extremely high-grade samples are encountered. There is a high degree of randomness to this data base, so reserve estimation in this situation will remain a high-risk operation."

"Extraction of Gold in Ketone from a suitably prepared sample of sulphide or siliceous ore or concentrate permits a rapid and accurate determination by Atomic Absorption. Mill test products and exploration development samples are acid-treated to effect complete dissolution of silver, copper, zinc, lead, molybdenum and iron present. Interferences in the determination of molybdenum are described. Results by Atomic Absorption are comparable to those afforded by other acceptable methods.INTRODUCTIONDuring recent years much has been written and discussed concerning Atomic Absorption Spectrometry as a technique for determining the concentration of metallic elements. We would, however, recommend a perusal of the paper presented by J. C. Ingles at the annual meeting of Canadian Gold Metallurgists held in Ottawa, January, 1966. The paper was published in the August, 1966, issue of the Canadian Mining Journal, and contains general information on Atomic Absorption.The purpose of our paper is to present certain specific method procedures for the determination of several precious and base metals normally present in Mine, Mill and Smelter products. Of necessity, analytical results should be as accurate as the most suitable available method permits, whether for metallurgical balance, settlement purpose, ore beneficiation programs, or exploration property development. The success of such programs is relative to the accuracy, speed and economics of the analysis. It is obvious, therefore, that in presenting our paper we consider the technique has achieved the desired evaluation."

Stirred milling of nickel laterites offers possibilities for improving liberation and selective size reduction of soft nickel-bearing minerals in laterites. Batch grinding tests were performed in a Netzsch LME4 stirred mill on siliceous goethitic (SG), goethitic (G), and saprolitic (SAP) nickel laterite samples (- 2000 ?m particle size) to evaluate the effect of stirrer speed, solid content, water salinity and grinding time. A fine mineral product (-38 µm) was used to evaluate the effect of selective grinding and Ni upgrade. The optimum grinding time for the highest Ni upgrade was 0.25 min, 0.1 min and 0.1 min for the SG, G, and SAP nickel laterite, respectively. A new feed (38-2000 µm) for each nickel laterite sample was prepared for batch grinding tests under the optimum grinding conditions. Upon grinding the 38-2000 µm feed, the - 38 µm product confirmed the effect of selective grinding and nickel upgrade. Size classification followed by stirred milling is a suggested process for Ni upgrade. The best Ni upgrade result was achieved on the SG nickel laterite among the three samples. The Ni grade increased from 0.85% to 1.37%, with 27.8% Ni recovery. Bottle roll leach tests showed that for SG and SAP samples selective grinding had no dramatic effect on Ni extraction due to the slow leach rate of hard mineral particles. Stirred milling of G sample increased the surface area of goethite, resulting in higher Ni extraction. Gravity concentration through a Knelson Concentrator was not effective in the further treatment of the stirred milling products either due to the poor operating conditions or due to the mineralogy characteristics of the feed samples. The energy requirement in the stirred milling was investigated. The first pass of the signature plots study is critical for the purpose of selective grinding, because the best result on selective grinding is achieved in the early stage of the grinding process.

Abstract - The base-metal and PGE contents of samples from magmatic sulfide mineralization are commonly correlated with their sulfide contents, indicating that the metal contents of bulk sulfides remain approximately constant within a given prospect or part thereof. Calculated sulfide metal contents provide valuable information in mineral exploration and research, but there are few formal descriptions and analyses of the procedures. Sulfide metal contents are best calculated using an assumed value (35.7% S) for a typical pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite-pentlandite mixture, and there appears to be little advantage in accounting for sulfide species separately. Regression of metal data against sulfur is probably the most rigorous approach, but is not always practical. Above 10% S, calculations are very robust, but lower sulfide contents generally demand at least some correction for non-sulfidehosted metals. Such corrections can become significant below 5% S, and/or in olivine-rich samples. They are best accomplished by mass-balance calculations, using concentration data from unmineralized host rocks. Significant uncertainties are introduced by analytical errors for sulfur, base-metals, and PGE, which are commonly measured from separate sample aliquots. These combined errors in sulfide metal contents generally exceed ±10%, but expand further at low S contents. In general, treatment of data from samples containing <2.5% S must be approached with caution, especially for PGE, for which the exact host minerals may not be known. Application of the method in simple grade-potential assessment is straightforward, but research studies involving sulfide-poor samples are inherently more complex. Under-correction or over-correction of data for non-sulfide-hosted metals can lead to false negative or positive correlations between sulfide metal contents and sulfide content. As the latter may itself be linked to geological parameters, such as depth within an intrusive body, undue significance could be ascribed to such trends. There are also valid geological reasons for such correlations, and such data require careful assessment to separate true and artificial variations. Propagated analytical uncertainties increase significantly in sulfide-poor samples, and must also be borne in mind whenever data from different localities or units are compared and contrasted.

At 14%, the representation of women working in the mining industry is the lowest among primary industry categories in Canada1. With reference to mining operations and senior leadership, the gap in the industry is even more pronounced. In an effort to narrow the gender gap, recent industry, education, and policy efforts have been made to increase the number of women entering the industry through career awareness and early career recruitment strategies. These strategies implied that by increasing the numbers of women entering the industry there would be a natural progression of women into the hierarchies of organizations. Efforts to retain women in the industry have focused around removing career barriers such as reviewing flexible work practices and programs directed at work life balance. At this time, these efforts have resulted in negligible fluctuations to the gender gap within the industry. This research investigates the under-representation of Highly Qualified Women (HQW), and the interaction of workplace culture on their career advancement and retention within the industry. HQW (women with a bachelor?s degree or higher) are the focus of the work as they represent an essential source of leadership and technical capacity for mining organizations. This paper is based on the results of a survey of 170 HQW working in the Canadian mining sector. The findings from this research suggest that HQWs careers in mining are stalled, despite a strong indication by respondents of interest in their professional career advancement. With regards to workplace culture, respondents indicated that blatant forms of gender discrimination have been reduced in mining workplaces; however, exclusion from informal networks, implicit bias and subtler forms of workplace discrimination persist. Utilizing a framework to assess the workplace culture for women in attracting and retaining their employment, respondents provided detailed information on the aspects of workplace culture that are most problematic in relation to women?s career development in mining. Women consistently identified problematic workplace culture as a significant barrier to the career advancement and retention of women within the industry. The representation of women within the labour force will likely remain stagnant until the industry addresses workplace culture within the industry, and makes strategic efforts to develop inclusive cultures throughout mining and supportive organizations.

"Gibraltar Mines Ltd. has been operating its open pit copper mine for fifteen years. In that time over 140 million tons of waste and low grade material has been placed on the mine waste dumps. Laboratory and in-situ testing indicated that enough leachable copper was recoverable from the dumps to justify a leaching operation which would include the construction of a solvent extraction-electrowinning plant. The plant, which was commissioned in October, 1984 was designed to process 3,000 usgpm of dilute copper solution to produce 5,000 tons per year of high quality cathode copper.This paper deals with the start up and initial year of operation of Gibraltar's SX-EW plant. The three areas: leaching solvent extraction and electrowinning are presented with emphasis on the innovations which were made to help overcome the problems unique to die Gibraltar operation.THE LEACHING CIRCUITThe mines waste dumps are leached to produce a pregnant copper solution as feed to the SX-EW plant. To achieve this the dumps are sprinkled with a mildly acidic solution which percolates through the dump. In travelling through the dumps the solution contacts the surfaces of the liberated copper minerals and disolves the soluble copper into the form of copper sulphate. The leaching reaction is achieved by a combination of bacterial action to oxidize the suphides and solublization of the copper into the acid solution.For the bacterial action to occur the dumps must be at or near the ideal pH of 1.9 - 2.1 and the necessary elements of the reaction must be present. Because a bacterial reaction is involved there is a lag time between the time when the conditions for bacterial growth are achieved and when the bacteria are in their active growth phase. Laboratory tests with Gibraltar ore indicated that bacterial action takes two to three months to reach its maximum rate. See figure 1.The expected lag time for the planned rate of bacterial leaching prompted Gibraltar to start irrigating the dumps in late June 1986 for a plant start up in early fall. The lag time proved to be longer than expected and the dumps took until November to start producing copper at the expected rate. See figure 2."

In order to maximize the recovery of ore in variably dipping ore zones of moderate width, cemented backfill is normally placed to serve as structural support. With the intention of saving on costs, backfill of low cement content can be used, which are often supported by a sillmat of higher strength. The stability of the low cement backfill face, exposed during adjacent mining, must be carefully studied to provide very effective, safe and economic mining operations. Improper design of these stope support structures may result in fill mass failure resulting in relaxation and failure of the stope walls, with consequent losses of production, ore dilution, and in safety problems. This paper presents a study conducted to assess fill performance during adjacent pillar mining and to provide a comprehensive understanding of backfill behaviour, the failure modes that may occur and the consequences to production, ore dilution and to safety problems, and accurately predict their stability. The design study investigated the effects of stope width and height, orebody geometry and inclination, and wall roughness on the stability of cemented backfill during adjacent pillar mining. Fill properties used were based on paste fill specimens cured for 28 days. Paste fill performances were assessed based on analytical and numerical modeling studies for the different mining conditions. Analytical modeling was carried out using limiting equilibrium analysis and numerical modeling was carried out using FLAC3D. The modeling results suggested that, for stopes that are inclined with smooth wall rock conditions, backfill failure, driven by the fill self-weight, has minimum dependency on the binder content and is reduced by resisting forces developed on the footwall-fill contact. For inclined stopes with rough wall rock conditions, wall roughness contributes significantly to the stability of the backfill during adjacent pillar mining. The analytical modeling approach was demonstrated to be useful in providing some approximate parameters for predicting the behaviour of paste fill exposed faces during adjacent mining, but cannot predict the mode or mechanisms of failure. Numerical modeling not only assess the stability behaviour of paste fill free faces, but also is able to provide a better idea of paste fill failure modes and possible failure mechanisms. The depth of failure and the potential for instability for a simulated stope filled with paste fill can be predicted, and may be useful in estimating the mass of material that could possibly fail and ore dilution levels.

With increasingly low-grade copper ores being mined, it is difficult to handle growing concentrations of As, Sb, Bi and/or Fe in the whole flowsheet, especially during copper electrorefining. To better elucidate the effects of those impurities on the quality of cathode deposit and/or current efficiency, a detailed speciation study of the electrolyte under industrial conditions is required to quantitatively describe their distribution in the solution, thereby facilitating their effective control and removal. In the present study, a thermodynamic model of complicated iron-arsenic-copper-sulfuric acid electrolyte under industrial conditions was developed. The main species of those elements involved in the electrolyte were first identified, and their thermodynamic data were collected and critically assessed. Those data were then used to estimate the activity coefficients of species, and to calculate the equilibrium constants from 25°C to 70°C. The developed model provides a mathematical tool that is capable of quantifying the concentrations of free ions and complexes in terms of temperature and solution composition. Finally, oxidation-reduction potential measurements were employed to validate the model. INTRODUCTION In copper electrorefining, impurities like arsenic, antimony, bismuth and/or iron can partially dissolve in the electrolyte and accumulate gradually, and eventually cause problems such as bad cathode deposit (co-deposition with copper or mechanical inclusion from the floating slime), lower current efficiency, etc., which eventually increases the operating costs. The presence of impurities may substantially reduce properties of copper products such as conductivity, corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, and leads to more energy consumption (Schlesinger et al., 2011; Jafari et al., 2017). To remove these impurities, various methods have already been proposed and applied in industrial copper production, such as solvent extraction, ion exchange, chemical precipitation, absorption by activated carbon, etc. (Cunningham et al., 1997; Navarro et al., 1999; Toyabe et al., 1987). In addition, adding reducing agents such as sulfur dioxide and trivalent arsenic could also precipitate arsenic, antimony and bismuth from copper electrolyte, by changing the distribution of impurities with various valence (Braun et al., 1976; Xiao et al., 2007). The disadvantages of those methods include high energy consumption, serious contamination, lower selectivity and efficiency, and so on.

In this investigation, effect of pressure depth on the globulizations of AZ91 magnesium alloy was studied. Cylindrical samples of AZ91 alloy with 1 cm and 2cm in height and 2.5cm in diameter (H/D = 0.4 and 0.8) were prepared, then the samples were hot pressed at 10 and 30% strain at a constant temperature of 200°C; subsequently reheated at 555°C in different times. Results obtained from optical microscopy (OM) showed that the thickness of the samples and consequently, depth of strain affected regions have remarkable effect on the degree of globulization. In addition, it was found that at a constant strain and holding time, structure of thinner samples is more globular than thicker ones.

The processing of a bulk concentrate containing copper as chalcocite, enargite, bornite and chalcopyrite along with pyrite and precious metals of silver and gold was studied. A leaching study was undertaken to examine the application of the atmospheric acid leaching process to a bulk copper concentrate for copper recovery followed by cyanidation or thiosulfate leaching for gold and silver recovery. The extraction of copper exceeded 90% under some conditions and the recovery of gold and silver reached a maximum of 44 and 45%, respectively. A sample of bulk concentrate was roasted in air to oxidize the sulfides with release of sulfur dioxide followed by acid leaching of the roaster calcine and cyanidation of the acid leach solution. The copper extraction reached over 92% and the gold extraction exceeded 88%. The sulfur dioxide may be captured for acid production. INTRODUCTION The processing of a large primary copper deposit in Indonesia is under investigation. One of the possible routes for processing involves flotation of a bulk copper-gold concentrate followed by treatment by an atmospheric leach/SX-EW process for copper recovery. The atmospheric leach residue would then be leached for recovery of gold and silver. A second route involves roasting of the concentrate followed by acid leaching and SX-EW for copper recovery. The leach residue from the roaster calcine would then be leached for recovery of gold and silver. The roaster off-gases could be used for sulfuric acid manufacture, enabling the production of a valuable by-product. The Cobre Las Cruces (CLC) process (Munoz, Garcia, & Delgado, 2017) was designed to treat a resource of copper discovered close to Seville, Spain. The process was developed by Outotec with MK Gold (original project owner). INMET Mining subsequently purchased the deposit from MK Gold and built the copper processing facility. The CLC process is similar to the Mt. Gordon Copper process; except that OKTOP reactors have been installed instead of a low temperature, low pressure autoclave process. The plant was designed to treat 1.3 mtpa of ore at a grade of 6.2% Cu to produce 72,000 tpa of cathode copper over a 15 year project life. The main gangue mineral at Cobre Las Cruces was pyrite. The Cobre Las Cruces ore is therefore similar to a rougher flotation concentrate containing copper minerals and pyrite. The roasting of a rougher flotation concentrate can be designed to produce hematite, basic copper oxides and sulfur dioxide off gas. The acid leaching of the basic copper oxides may produce soluble copper for SX-EW recovery of copper. The sulfur dioxide off-gas may be used to make sulfuric acid.

Of four main gypsum areas in the province, commercial production has only come from Falkland and the Kootenay and Columbia River valleys of southeast British Columbia. The Windermere deposit in southeast B.C. has been the major producer since /948. Gypsum and anhydrite from the Falkland deposit is used principally in cement-making at Kam/oops. GYPSUM deposits in British Columbia are known from four different areas: the southeast part of the province in the proximity of the Kootenay and Columbia River valleys; Forgetmenot Creek astride the British Columbia - Alberta boundary near Intersection Mountain; Falkland; and O'Connor River north of Haines . To date, commercial production has only come from Falkland and the southeast part of the province. Gypsum deposits of southeast British Columbia occur in the Burnais Formation of Devonian age. Outcrops of gypsum and numerous sinkholes indicating its presence are scattered over large areas of the Stanford Range. Several properties have been examined by industry in both the recent and more distant past. Significant production is reported from only two deposits. The Mayook deposit, active from 1926 to 1929 and from 1947 to 1954, produced approximately 95,000 tonnes of gypsum. The Windermere deposit, which has been active since 1948, is operated by Westrock Industries and has produced more than 6.8 million tonnes of gypsum. The Burnais Formation is composed principally of well bedded, finely 'laminated gypsum but also contains thin lenses of black fetid limestone and dolomite. Part of the Formation consists of breccia with angular carbonate clasts in massive, coarse grained gypsum. In several exposures, the Formation appears 10 be from 200 10 400 m thick, of which more than 75 Industrial Minerals in Canada per cent is gypsum . In the Stanford Range reserves mineable by quarry methods are estimated to be approximately 450 million tonnes.

"Abstract - The Draa Sfar polymetallic deposit, at about 16 km NW of Marrakech in Morocco, is a massive sulfide zone at the contact between an underlying volcanic and an overlying clastics sequence. The mineralized body is a flat lens with schistosity and "boudinage," tilted to the west and with a strong dip to the east. The lens extends over a strike length of about 2 km and from surface to a depth of about 1 km, with thickness varying from 1 m to almost 30 m. It has been intersected by about one hundred surface drill holes and, in its south part, by about thirty underground fan holes from two exploration levels at depths of 300 m and 400 m. On these two levels, the massive sulfide zone has been channel sampled over a cumulative length of about 0.7 km. Results from drill and channel samples are used to estimate the resources of the orebody according to several methods: sections, polygons around intercepts on a longitudinal plan, grids on the same longitudinal plan with various distance weighting methods including kriging and, finally, a 3D grid with the same range of interpolators. A comparison of the various estimates delineates the important factors in deriving resources for this type of deposit. Those factors are mostly geological and related to the interpretation of the geometry of the two limiting surfaces of the zone. For the 3D gridding, the authors have devised a new and original method that constrains the interpolation of blocks from samples to a geometry of limiting surfaces. The resulting model shows internal grade variations that parallel fluctuations of zone thickness and orientation without having to re-orientate the search window in each block. Résumé - Le gisement polymétallique de Draa Sfar, situé à environ 16 km au NW de Marrakech est un horizon de sulfure massif au contact d’une formation volcano-sédimentaire de base et d’une formation détritique sur-jacente. Le corps minéralisé se présente sous forme d’une méga-lentille aplatie, schistosée, boudinée et déversée vers l’ouest avec un fort pendage vers l’est s’étendant sur une longueur de 2 km et une profondeur de près de 1 km avec une épaisseur variant de moins d’un mètre à près de 30 m. Il a été reconnu par plus d’une centaine de sondages de surface et, dans sa partie sud, par une trentaine de trous souterrains en éventail à partir de deux niveaux à des profondeurs respectives de 300 m et 400 m. Sur ces mêmes niveaux, des traçages ont permis de rainurer le minerai sur une longueur cumulée de 0.7 km. Les données de sondage et de rainurage ont servi à estimer les ressources du gisement selon plusieurs méthodes : sections, polygones sur longitudinale, grille sur longitudinale avec différentes pondérations en fonction des distances incluant le krigeage et enfin grille tridimensionnelle avec le même éventail de pondérateurs. La comparaison des estimés obtenus permet de mettre en évidence les facteurs importants dans l’estimation des ressources de ce type de gisement. Ces facteurs sont essentiellement géologiques et relatifs à l’interprétation de la géométrie des limites des corps minéralisés. Pour l’estimation sur grille tridimensionnelle, on a mis au point une technique originale qui calque l’interpolation des blocs à partir des échantillons sur cette géométrie des surfaces de contact. Le modèle résultant montre des variations internes de teneurs qui épousent les fluctuations d’épaisseur et d’orientation de la zone sans qu’il soit nécessaire de ré-orienter les fenêtres de recherche dans chaque bloc."

In this paper, we present numerical results corresponding to the Thermal Simulation for Drift Emplacement (TSDE) test, conducted in the Asse salt mine (Germany) between 1990 and 1999 to simulate reference repository conditions for spent nuclear fuel in rock salt. This test is of significant relevance for nuclear waste disposal in salt because extensive research and measurement programs were set up for the experiment. In our numerical study, we use two sequential simulators, TOUGH-FLAC and FLAC-TOUGH, and we investigate two-way coupled processes, focusing on thermo-mechanical analyses due to the main effect of heating. The two simulators used have recently been updated and are able to deal with large strains and creep processes. Moreover, specific constitutive relationships and coupling functions for rock salt and crushed salt under repository conditions are available. Within the framework of a benchmark exercise between Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Clausthal University of Technology, the same scenario has been modeled in three dimensions using the two simulators mentioned. The main objective of the current, first stage of the benchmark is to evaluate the capabilities of these two simulators to predict relevant processes under repository conditions for high-level nuclear waste in saliniferous media. The comparison of the numerical predictions between them is very satisfactory, leading to a successful code-to-code verification. The comparison between measurements and numerical results shows that the most important processes are captured by the codes and constitutive models used. However, some differences exist between measurements and numerical results. These differences will be addressed in the next stage of the benchmark exercise, in which a parameter fitting effort will be undertaken. Overall, from the results obtained it can be concluded that TOUGH-FLAC and FLAC-TOUGH have the necessary capabilities to reproduce relevant processes under repository conditions for high-level nuclear waste in saliniferous formations.

This paper presents methods of implementation and the added value that can be achieved by connecting personnel tracking systems and alarm-broadcasting systems. The authors point out the functions of the two systems that enable cooperation between them. Methods for connecting the systems on the surface and underground areas of mines require some intervention in both systems, so the authors point out a possible phased approach to introducing cooperation methods. Due to the fact that tracking systems in Polish mines are at an early stage of implementation, the article aims to provide new functionality, attempts to identify the needs of future users, and describes the experience of both production companies in terms of the development of cooperation methods.
