"The introduction of an amendment to the Mines Regulation Act in the Province of British Columbia, passed in July 1974, and similar amendments since enacted by other provinces introduced the Canadian underground mining industry to the use of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids.Few, if any, of the hydraulic circuits in use in underground mining at that time were specifically designed for use with fire-resistant fluids, compared with the increasing number of such circuits conceived and in production today. The technology required in designing equipment for use with fire-resistant fluids may be likened to that associated with conventional mineral oils, but, in many respects, a variety of additional and / or alternative considerations must be taken into account. The fast-increasing use and development of fire-resistant fluids throughout all facets of industry, world wide, during the past 20 years has led to a whole new technology in system construction and component design, whereby acceptable performance can be achieved . However , the transition from conventional mineral hydraulic oils has not been without its problems, particularly when retro-fit of existing units was involved."

"INCO Limited purchased a custom designed mobile hoist rope winder/tensioner in 1988 from TimberLand Equipment Limited to handle Large hoist ropes and serve as an emergency hoist. This paper describes the operation of the winder/tensioner and some of the different applications that the machine has been used to handle large loads.IntroductionINCO Limited operates 24 mine hoists in the Ontario Division and has approximately 50 miles of mine hoist rope hanging in the shaft plus an equal amount on spare reels. The mine hoist ropes range in size from )( inch to 2.305 inches in diameter with the majority being 1 3/4 inches and above. Prior to the procurement of a new high powered winder/tensioner in 1988, the mine hoist ropes were handled with a variety of methods and equipment using hydraulic or pneumatic powered reel winders. The largest such reel winder has a pull rating of 8000 Ibs and travels approximately 40 ft/min. Head ropes for the tower mounted friction hoists were installed and removed using a magazine on the hoist drum to wind and unwind the rope because the loads were greater than the capacity of the existing machinery. It was recognized that a large high capacity machine would improve the productivity for handling the larger hoist ropes and a feasibility study was undertaken to determine the parameters for such a machine."

The initial attempt to gain access to the potash beds was unsuccessful, however, subsequent attempts were successful and today there are ten operating potash mines in Saskatchewan. "Abstract - Natural gamma-ray measurements were made in the GSC Smeaton drillhole as part of the borehole geophysical classification of kimberlite pipe 169. In addition, forty samples of Cretaceous sediments (shales, siltstones, and sandstones) and thirty-five kimberlite samples, selected from the drill core, were analyzed for major and trace elements. These elements included potassium (K), uranium (U), and thorium (Th), which are the main naturally-occurring radioactive elements.Different phases of the kimberlite, and the Cretaceous sediments which show variations in the gamma-ray activity, can be easily delineated on the gamma-ray logs. The gamma-ray logs indicate that the radioactivity in the kimberlite derives mainly from Th, and, to a lesser extent, U. Most of the kimberlite units are enriched in Th and U relative to the Cretaceous sediments, and these radioelements are mainly hosted by accessory apatite and perovskite, and minor zircon. Potassium concentrations are low in the kimberlite. The higher K concentration in the sediments clearly distinguishes the Cretaceous sediments from the kimberlite.The U/K and Th/K ratios show important and distinct differences between the two major types of volcaniclastic kimberlite. Kimberlite lapillistones have higher U/K and Th/K ratios than the olivine crystal tuffs. Furthermore, standardized U/K and Th/K geophysical logs can be used to separate marine reworked olivine shoreface sands from other shallow marine sediments that contain kimberlitic detritus. The identification of different phases and/or stratigraphic facies of kimberlite on the basis of radioelement distributions means that gamma-ray spectrometry can assist exploration, particularly in regard to diamond grade distribution."

Tunnel sealing experiment (TSX) was conducted between 1997 and 2004 in the Canadian URL located in Manitoba. In the experiment, a tunnel was excavated parallel to the maximum principal stress direction, filled with sand and sealed with bulkheads at both ends. It was then pressurized and heated by injecting hot water. The rock mass response was monitored with seismic methods. The main interest in the numerical simulation was the damage formed during the heating phase. The large-scale PFC2D models replicated a central plane- strain section of the TSX chamber. The models captured the first-order phenomena observed in-situ displaying the difference in the damage in the roof and floor regions, respectively. This difference was due to the filling material confinement of about 100 kPa on the tunnel floor, which occurred in the course of the heated experiment.

When rivers are contaminated from industrial operations, as often occurs near repositories of spent mine tailings, decision-support tools can be critically important in evaluating the effectiveness of various engineering impact-management measures. Even where data describing river flows and quality are sparse, simple mixing-zone models can be constructed that can contribute greatly to understanding how impact-management measures can differentially affect existing river-chemistry regimes. There can be circumstances where accumulated surface waters near contaminated land can bear contaminant loadings that could be acceptable to river regimes if there were methods available to evaluate optional discharge rates and to predict post-mixing consequences on river chemistry. Nomographs can be constructed to evaluate discharge regimes that appear capable of releasing contaminated accumulated pond water without compromising water quality in a nearby river. River-mixing zone models also contribute to predicting rates of acceptable discharge and release to the receiving environment.

Following the closure of the Glencore Zinc Brunswick mine, the Glencore Brunswick Smelter has transitioned to treating external feeds, and currently treats a number of secondary Pb-Zn concentrates. Processing these concentrates has in some cases been challenging due to the diverse mineralogy of the feeds. Certain feeds are difficult to ignite or show inadequate sulphur removal during oxidation on the sinter strand, while in other cases, combinations of feeds produce a sinter with unsuitable properties for further handling. This paper discusses two methods developed in collaboration with XPS Consulting & Testwork Services to characterize these feeds prior to processing them and to identify which ones are most likely to pose challenges during processing.

Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) allows for the nano-scale exploration of materials at unprecedented resolution and sensitivity. In this paper, we combine this approach with electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) to analyze the carbon distribution in residual solids found in solvent-diluted bitumen product extracted from Alberta oil sands. Major components of these contaminant solids are ultrafine clays. Biwettable clays have been associated with the formation of solid-stabilized water-in-oil emulsion, which are known to increase the content of both water and mineral solids in the final bitumen product. We demonstrate that the residual solids present in bitumen product contain carbon intermixed with mineral particles of various size and shape. By probing the carbon content at the nanometer scale with the high chemical sensitivity of EELS, we provide direct evidence of carbon intermixing with clay platelets. This clay-organic association at the nanometer-scale will contribute to the biwettable, hydrophobic character of the platelets, and will therefore play a crucial role in the bitumen extraction process
