"Spontaneous combustion has always been a problem in coal mines and is identified mainly with the mining of low-rank coals. The liability of coals to spontaneous heating is only one of the factors in determining whether spontaneous combustion will occur. However, knowledge of the relative oxidizability of the coal is a useful factor to take into consideration when selecting new coal seams and mining methods for future mine development.Four methods (static isothermal, ignitability, adiabatic and dynamic) have been used to compare the relative liability of Canadian coal to spontaneous combustion and to investigate the mechanism of spontaneous combustion of these coals. Among these f our methods, the static isothermal method is considered to be the best indicator of the susceptibility of various coals to spontaneous combustion. Western mountain coal adsorbs more oxygen and has a higher tendency to undergo spontaneous combustion than the Harbour seam coal of Nova Scotia. It has also been observed that a higher methane content in coal will indicate a lower liability to spontaneous heating."

DURING the past year the Cadillac-Malanie area in northwestern Quebec has been catapulted to the front as one of Canada's most active gold mining districts. Late in 1934 the area was lolling along in the doldrums, with one producing mine and a handful of active prospects. 1935 passed with only slightly increased activity, but saw the start of production at Canadian Malartic mine. Lightning struck in April, 1936, when a new and phenomenally rich ore-body was found in O'Brien Gold mine, and by midsummer the camp was ablaze with activity. An important new discovery on the Pan-Canadian property, and pleasing underground developments at Sladen Malarric, East Malartic, and Lapa Cadillac, in addition to other new developments, lent fodder to the flame, and at present several dozen properties are being actively developed. For the past three seasons, the Geological Survey of Canada has been engaged in a fairly detailed study of the geology and mineral deposits across Cadillac, Malarric, and Fourniere townships. Ir is the purpose of this paper to present a brief preliminary statement of the structural and economic geology and to discuss some of the more important problems that have been found to exist. The reader is requested to remember that the paper is a preliminary one and that therefore the conclusions presented are open to revision. It is impossible to make full acknowledgment for help received, for the writers are indebted to practically every operator and prospector in the area for generous co-operation in the work, and to several private, provincial, and federal geologists for data and frank discussion of problems encountered. Over a score of student assistants from McGill, Queen's, and Toronto have given excellent service. Published reports by Wilson, Cooke, James, Mawdsley, L. V. Bell, and J. J. "Wollastonite (CaSiO3]) is experiencing increased usage in a variety of applications, such as fillers in paints, plastics and resins, as an extender to replace both non-fibrous and fibrous materials (e.g. asbestos), and in the glass and ceramics industries. Significant new deposits of wollastonite have been discovered in Marmora Township, about 175 km northeast of Toronto. The geological setting of these large-tonnage. High grade deposits has recently been investigated to assess the possibility of their development. A preliminary study of the chemistry, as well as the mineralogy of six occurrences is presented. Based upon this information, it is suggested that several of the deposits have an excellent development potential.INTRODUCTIONWollastonite is an anhydrous calcium metasilicate (CaSiO3), with a theoretical composition of 48.3% CaO and 51.7% SiO2; the calcium may be partially replaced by iron, manganese, magnesium, and strontium. Commonly associated minerals include diopside, tremolite, idocrase, grossularite andradite, quartz, and calcite. Wollastonite forms as a contact metamorphic mineral within impure limestone near intrusive bodies of granite, or other acidic rocks, as the result of metasomatism of calcareous sedimentary rocks, or by the crystallization of certain magmas (e.g. carbonautes). Generally, the reaction of calcite with silica to produce wollastonite occurs when siliceous hydrothermal fluids from a granitic intrusion or primary silica in the limestone/marble react with calcite in limestone at temperatures between 450°C and 600°C."

"In the two years since their introduction, Friction Rock Stabilizershave replaced40 per cent of the previously used fixtures in the metal and non-metal mines in the United States. The Friction Rock Stabilizer, or ""Split Set "" , is a mechanical rock stabilizing system which uses friction to prevent rock movement . The Split Set is a tapered, rolled, steel tube that is slotted along its length. As it is driven into a drilled hole smaller than its diameter, it compresses, pre-loading the surrounding rock. This paper discusses the uses and acceptance of the friction rock stabilizer in mines in the United States. IntroductionFriction Rock Stabilizers, commonly called Split Set™· Stabilizers, have been under development by the author and Ingersoll-Rand Company since early 1973. Five years of intensive laboratory and field testing led to their introduction to the metal mines in the United States in the fall of 1976. Actual sales started in February of 1977and, to date, over five million units have been marketed to metal mines. The present rate of usage is near 3 V2 million units per year, which is approximately 50070 of all roof fixtures used in the United States metal mining industry,Richard Hoppe, senior editor of Engineering & Mining Journal. , in an article in the February 1979 issue entitled ""Winning the Battle Against Bad Ground"", said: ""In hardrock mining operations in the western U.S., particularly underground uranium mines where exceedingly difficult ground is common, no roof support system has been accepted more quickly than the Split Set friction bolt invented by Dr. James J . Scott and developed by Ingersoll-Rand Co."" This paper describes how Friction Rock Stabilizers function and presents technical data to show the uniqueness of such systems."

Acid mine drainage (AMD), which is a major source of mining pollution, often contains ferric and/or ferrous ions together with several toxic elements. The ferric and ferrous ions in AMD precipitate in several mineralogical forms after neutralization, and the ferric/ferrous precipitates become the main component of the sludge generated after AMD treatment. The precipitates are also good absorbents for several toxic elements. To avoid generation of voluminous sludges and the re-dissolution of toxic elements from the sludge, it is very important to generate well-draining and efficiently adsorbing sludges by controlling the mineralogical form of the ferric/ferrous precipitates. Green rust, which is ferric and ferrous hydroxide, is a double layer hydroxide which is able to sorb several toxic elements. The green rust transforms to goethite or lepidocrocite by rapid oxidation, whereas it transforms to magnetite at ambient temperature by slow oxidation. The magnetite is also good absorbent especially for toxic cations and it makes a compact sludge due to its magnetic properties. We investigated the magnetite generation process at ambient temperature in detail. The magnetite generation process can be divided into three steps; (i) oxidation of Fe(II), (ii) Fe(II) surface complexation to Fe(III) hydroxide, and (iii) crystallization of magnetite. More magnetite can form when the oxidation rate is slower than the crystallization rate, and optimum conditions for its formation are at pH 9.5 with mild agitation. Ferrihydrite is the most common precipitate and it is able to sorb many different toxic elements. However, it drains badly and its solid/liquid separation properties are poor. We investigated the removal mechanism of several toxic elements by co-precipitation with ferrihydrite. We confirmed that the removal mechanism by co-precipitation partly involved surface precipitation when the initial ratio of toxic elements to ferric ion was high, although the main mechanism was always surface complexation. When surface precipitation occurred, highly efficient toxic element removal with ferrihydrite could be achieved.

"In addition to the actual energy consumed, billing is dependent on the peak load and the power factor. The lower the power factor goes, the higher will be the penalty the consumer pays. The principles of a power factor regulator, the two ways of improving the power factor and methods for calculating the capacitor values required will be described.The rate structure of the utility company is founded on three cornerstones: the energy consumed during a given period of time and two penalties imposed when the power factor is low or the power demand is high. Even though the normal consumption of a customer might be 10 kW, with a peak demand of 20 kW only once a month, the wiring and associated equipment at the input to the customer's plant will have to accommodate this peak demand. The power company has no means of forecasting these demands and cannot therefore provide the additional equipment necessary. So it exacts a penalty, and the customer must take all possible steps to avoid these peak power demands. This can be accomplished by using an automatic peak load regulator which will selectively disconnect the loads which are not essential in the operation of a plant .The principles of such a controller will be described.Principles of power factor regulatorsThe operating principles of a power factor regulator will now be described. It might be asked why the power factor of an electrical installation in a mine, or a factory, should be corrected at all, but there is a simple answer. "Geographic information systems (GIS) provide an efficient means for the recording, manipulation, revision, display and analysis of spatially referenced data. GIS are widely used at the exploration stage of mine development, and are increasingly used for reclamation planning. The ability of a GIS to perform spatial searches and query spatially referenced data make it a powerful tool for use at all stages of mine development. As the amount of data available for analysis increases, so does the power and flexibility of GIS as a planning tool.Starting from the exploration database, this paper describes how a GIS can be used for the development of mining plans based on topography, geology and mineralization information stored in a relational database. Planning decisions approaching the optimal can then be made for a wide range of parameters, including stockpile and waste dump locations, the location of potentially acid generating and neutralizing material for dump design, profitable and risk-controlled mine extraction sequencing, and haul road locations. This is made possible by the overlay and buffer analysis capabilities of a GIS which are explored and exploited to produce a continuous mine production planning program, as well as site remediation and reclamation using a successful case study. The Ore and ProductsThe mines in the Saskatoon area — Agrium, PCS-Cory, PCS-Allan, PCS-Patience Lake, PCS-Lanigan and IMC-Colonsay — extract the ore from the Patience Lake member. The mines in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan — IMC-K1 and K2, PCSRocanville — extract from the Esterhazy member, while IMC-Belle Plaine, near Regina, solution mines potassium chloride from both potash-bearing members.Ore from the Patience Lake member is a medium-grained mixture of sylvite and halite, with a KCl content of 36%, insolubles averaging up to 5.5%, and little or no carnallite.The ore from the Esterhazy member is a coarse-grained mixture of sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl) with a small amount of water insolubles, and some carnallite (a K-Mg chloride). Average run-of-mine grades are about 30% KCl."

Production figures for the main metal products - zinc, lead, silver and gold - are provided.IntroductionIncorporated in 1906, Cominco Ltd. is an integrated natural resource company with principal activities in mining, smelting and refining, mineral exploration, fertilizer production and electrical power generation.Cominco is one of the world's largest producers of zinc and lead, accoW1ting for about 10070 of mine production in the western world. The company also produces and sells copper concentrate, copper sulphate, copper arsenate, sodium antirnonate, silver, gold, cadmium, bismuth, indium, and germanium dioxide and a range of fertilizers and sulphur products.Zinc OperationsRoastingThe roasters currently treat about 1400 t/d of zinc concentrates. Over half of the total concentrate treated originates from the Red Dog Mine in Alaska. During the summer, concentrate is shipped from Alaska to Vancouver where it is loaded into rail cars and hauled inland, transferred to trucks and delivered to Trail. The remainder of the roaster feed is made up of Sullivan concentrate and various custom concentrates. These arrive either by train or by truck.There are three roasters available for roasting the concentrate. The two major roasters are Lurgi fluid bed units. Each Lurgi roaster can process concentrate at about 1:7 tonnes per hour (tlb). A smaller Cominco suspension roaster with a capacity of 10 tlb is also used. The flowsheet for the high temperature section of the fluid bed circuit is shown in Figure 1.Concentrates fed to fluid bed roasting are conditioned with 7 1/min water to give 8% moisture in feed. Two slinger belts throw the mixture into the fluidized bed. The fluid bed roasters are 10.4 m in diameter with a bed depth of 1 m. Grate area is 84 m2• Normal operating conditions include bed temperatures of 930°C to 950°C, fluidizing air at 750 Nm3/min and a wind box pressure of 2000 mm H2O."

"A significant development in froth flotation technology has been the emerging industrial acceptance of column flotation during the past few years. Flotation columns are being employed now in several Canadian base metal concentrators and they are being considered f or a wide range of flotation applications throughout North and South America. Since the operating principles of a column differ markedly from those of conventional flotation machines, and have been poorly understood, scale-up of columns has been difficult. This paper describes a methodology f or translating laboratory column data to industrial operation.The scale-up model utilizes kin etic data that is obtained from a series of laboratory column experiments; the laboratory column can be as short as 2 m. For modelling purposes the column is considered to consist of two zones: the collection zone, where particle recovery occurs, and the cleaning zone, a packed bubble bed generated by downward flowing wash water. Mixing conditions in the collection zone have been characterized using the results of tracer experiments on plant columns at Mines Gaspe. The same experiments demonstrated the nearly complete suppression of entrained gangue minerals that is attained in the cleaning zone. The model explicitly accounts for both the collection zone and cleaning zone recoveries and allows for the effects of bubble overloading. Results of column scale-up experiments at Gibraltar Mines are presented."

"The largest Canadian Lamella thickener installation to date, with 13,600 square feet of effective clarification area, is being successfully operated at the Rocanville Division of the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan. This paper describes the operational principles and design features of the Lamella thickener, the testwork leading to its specification f or the Rocanville phase two expansion project and a review of the performance of the full- size unit which was ultimately installed.IntroductionThickening equipment operating in the Saskatchewan potash industry is generally situated within the main refinery building or a separate insulated an d he a ted structure due to the harsh winter climate and the need to closely control plant brine temperatures to en sure good flotation circuit performance Because these thickeners process large volumes of slurries, conventional basin-type designs tend to be large, ranging up to 46 metres in diameter or more. As part of the general effort to minimize capital costs, the potash industry has begun investigating the use of alternate high capacity, compact thickener designs. In this regard, PCS Rocanville undertook a program in 1978 to evaluate a LamellaTM thickener and one other type of ‘High Rate' thickener as alternatives to a conventional design for the phase two expansion project.This paper describes the operational principles and design features o f the Lamella thickener (manufactured by Axel Johnson lnc.), the testwork leading to the specification of a Lamella for the Rocanville expansion project and are view of the performance of the full size unit (1486 m2 of the effective settling area) which was ultimately installed and is now successfully operating in the Rocanville plant."

"Titanium dioxide pigment plants using the so-called “chloride process” produce considerable amounts of chloride waste, which contains predominantly iron chloride. In most cases, this waste is dissolved in a weak hydrochloric acid solution and then neutralised. The metal content of the waste is dumped as hydroxide sludge, while its chloride content is lost in an effluent.Rio Tinto Iron & Titanium has developed a new proprietary process whereby pure metallic iron and chlorine gas are recovered from chloride waste by electrolysis. This process uses a two compartment cell separated by an anion exchange membrane to prevent iron cycling between its trivalent and divalent valence. The cathode is made of titanium Grade 7, while the anode is a dimensionally stable one of the type “metal–mixed metal oxide” (MMO) for the evolution of chlorine gas. The catholyte is concentrated and pH-adjusted iron-rich chloride solution originating from chloride waste. The anolyte is recirculating solution containing alkali or alkali earth chlorides such as MgCl2, NaCl, etc. Current efficiencies above 90% can be achieved at temperatures about 80°C using catholyte solutions almost saturated in iron chloride and other chlorides.In this paper, we discuss the details of this process, and how this could be integrated within a chloride pigment plant for the treatment of chloride wastes."

"Modular Mining's computerized LHD position monitoring and dispatching system commenced operation at the De Beers Finsch Mine in mid- J99J. A sophisticated blend of proven and new technologies links the dispatcher at the workstation console on the surface with the LHD operators several hundred metres below. The dispatcher allocates each LHD to a priority tip and loading drive based on instructions provided by the miners and shift bosses underground. LHD operators receive tip and loading drive allocations on the vehicle computer console which communicates data via a Leaky Feeder radio network. The operators interact with the console to notify the dispatcher of delays, breakdowns, and changes in tip and tunnel status. The underground terminal displays allow shift bosses to monitor the progress of the LHDs as they pass infrared beacons (IRs) located in the tips loading drives and rim tunnel main haulage ways. The terminals also provide on-line statistics for the current and previous shifts. Future enhancements include optimized dispatching and interfacing to a PLC system controlling ventilation. Further, token ring-based loop UHF radios are being investigated as an alternative to the Leaky Feeder data radio network. IntroductionFinsch first contacted Modular about an LHD monitoring and dispatching system in late 1988. At that time, Modular declined a request for a formal quotation but agreed to perform an engineering feasibility study. The study was issued in mid-1989 and confirmed Finsch's belief that an underground system could be developed with technology available at that time. A contract for the system was signed the following year and, in May of 1991, the system began operation. By the end of 1991, LHDs on both production levels of the mine were under the control of the system."

Rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of lanthanides elements which have been widely used in the electronic, petrochemistry, metallurgy, and defense industries. Their demand has increased sharply in the past decade with the boom in electronic device production. Some countries now consider them strategic metals for the future and it has been forecasted that REEs may become a dominant contributor to global economy. In the wake of REE exploration, mining and processing, concern has grown over occupational and community health issues and risks. A portion of available literature on this topic however is written in the Chinese language, and thus research information related to health and REE mining is not readily accessible to mineral development planners in countries such as Canada, where REE mining is now evolving. As REEs also represent an important commodity, primarily stemming from Chinese production, it is important to begin to understand the potential health costs related to this mining sector. There are two main objectives of this paper. The first is to present an overview of REE mining with a focus on geological characteristics, global production and uses with particular attention to the main producer: China. The second is to present the results of a literature review (using both Chinese and English sources) on REE mining and health and identifies key occupational and community health issues that require consideration. This paper concludes by identifying some critical issues this sector needs to address to ensure the sustainable development of this mining activity.

"Concentrate dewatering operations have a significant influence on the economics of base metal beneficiation. The expenditures f or energy and labour per tonne of product are high. The relatively low efficiencies of standard techniques present inducements for process modifications. Development efforts at several Noranda concentrators led to process changes which improved productivity, namely, agitated pulp storage in large vessels, process automation and pressure filtration.IntroductionA program was initiated in 1968 with the aim of improving utilization of manpower and equipment in dewatering operations. The following considerations motivated us in this effort: Firstly, filters and dryers had traditionally been operated continuously and in step with grinding and flotation circuits. The demand for labour and equipment operating time was fixed and was not determined by the rate of concentrate production.Secondly, dewatering equipment had usually been designed to handle the concentrate tonnages which were produced when mill feed grades were high; therefore the equipment operated at less than capacity when treating ores of average metal content. The first goal was the separation of the flotation process from concentrate dewatering by development of a practical storage system for concentrate pulps . A second objective was the gradual introduction of dependable automatic controls. The steep increase in energy costs after 1973 added urgency to the search for dewatering processes which were highly energy efficient."

"A morphological and chemical study of the Great Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. (GCOS) fly ash has been carried out. Extensive scanning electron microscopy, as well as light microscopy, showed that the GCOS fly ash consists of two fractions, one composed of unburnt or partially burnt irregular-shaped carbon particles and an ash fraction composed of transparent and opaque, often coloured, glassy spherical particles-some of them cenospheres (hollow spheres) and the others plerospheres (hollow spheres packed with smaller spheres). Microcrystals (0.1 to 0.3 um long) growing on the inner and outer surfaces of some of the spheres were also noted and found to contain more Fe, Ti, Ni and V than the spheres.The carbon-free GCOS fly ash particle size follows a lognormal distribution, with a geometric median particle size (by count) of3.8um and a geometric standard deviation of 1.84. IntroductionCanada's current energy situation strongly suggests that oil from the Alberta tar sands deposits will probably be recovered more extensively in the future. Today's commercially proven technology to recover oil from the Athabasca tar sands, as practised by Great Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. (GCOS), involves two major operations, namely: separation of the bitumen from the sand and upgrading of the bitumen to refinery oil; the production of significant amounts of petroleum coke and sulphur during the bitumen upgrading process. The bulk of the petroleum coke is burnt in boilers to fulfill the energy requirements of the entire operation. The boiler ash, which contains appreciable amounts of metals, such as vanadium, nickel, titanium, iron, aluminum and other elements, is collected in the boiler hoppers and cyclones of the petroleum coke-fired steam generation plants. Thus, as well as representing a petroleum resource, the tar sands represent a resource for vanadium and possibly other metals providing that metal recovery processes can be developed."

They are used by many kinds of individuals in many kind s of situations. Prospectors commonly take royalty interests back when they transfer claims to development companies. Mining companies disposing of undeveloped (or sometimes even developed) properties are often paid at least in part by royalties. Royalties are even used by institutional investors with no other connection with the resource industry.Such different royalty holders have different investment goals, different cash flow requirements, and different risk / return preferences. These differences have given rise to a number of different royalty type s. These types range from the simplest cents-per-ton royalty (where the operator pays a royalty at a fixed rate per ton milled) to net smelter return or ""NSR"" royalties (where the royalty is based on a percentage of the operator's NSR) all the way to net profit interest or ""NPI"" royalties (where the royalty is based on the operator's bottom-line net profit),The fundamental difference between the many royalty types is in the risk/ return relationship. The cents-per-ton royalty, for example, is relatively risk-free. Of the many economic factors which affect a mine, the only one which will affect the royalty holder is the amount of ore physically milled. On the other hand, the potential for significant gains under a cents-per-ton royalty is also very limited. The royalty holder will not share in any increases in the market price of the end product or any cost reductions achieved by the producer."

It is necessary to understand the characteristics, phase changes and chemical reactions of flue dusts introduced from a furnace to an off-gas line in order to achieve the stable operation and the improvement. This study is to develop the dust reaction model for chemical reactions of dusts in an uptake shaft of smelting furnace and a waste heat boiler. Phase equilibria and reaction paths in this system were determined by thermodynamic calculation with experimental and industrial data. The oxidation reaction rate of dusts was determined by the gas film mass transfer controlling. And the sulfation reaction rate was evaluated by the unreacted shrinking core model. Kinetic parameters were estimated by reference data including industrial ones. The present study with the developed model shows various effects of temperatures, dust particle sizes, and O2 gas partial pressures on dust reactions. INTRODUCTION The flue dusts from a copper smelting furnace move along a furnace off-gas stream into an uptake shaft and a waste heat boiler (WHB) and electrostatic precipitator(s). It is necessary to control the dust quality in order to stabilize the operation because the sticking behaviors differ depending on the phase of dusts. Phase changes of dusts are caused by chemical reactions at given conditions such as temperature and partial pressure of gases. Therefore, it is required to understand the phase changes and chemical reactions of dusts in order to perform the improvement and stable operation. The present study carried out the investigation to understand their fundamental knowledge. Especially, this study was focused on the kinetics of chemical reactions of flue dusts, developed the model. In particular, the scope of development and utilization of the model was defined as the uptake shaft of the Mitsubishi S furnace and the S-WHB radiation section in the Onsan smelter. Information needed for the modeling work referred to data from these processes.

"The efficiency of operation and life of an advancing longwall coalface depends, to a great extent. on the face-end roof strata conditions and the stability of the gateroads. The factors that influence the rate of closure of gateroads are examined, in particular the gateside pack and the coal rib (crush) pillars. The performance of mechanized packing systems is briefly discussed. Gateroad deformation surveys were carried out at two coal mines to determine the influence of the rib pillar width on gateroad stability; also, the influence of the gateside pack on the immediate roof and floor strata is analyzed based on strata bed displacement measurements from instruments installed in the gateroad and pack-hole of a longwall advancing face operating in a thick seam (7.55 m). The design of face-end layouts can be aided by knowledge of strata control parameters, such as the effective loading of the immediate roof strata , convergence of the roof and floor, magnitude and distribution of fractures in the roof strata around the face-end , optimum placement of supports, coal seam thickness and strength characteristics, geometry of layout and interaction from neighbouring workings. Generally, the gateroad is formed by one of three face-end methods: (a) advanced headings, (b) in-line system (gateroad formed at the face) or (c) conventional ripping with or without stable elimination (also halfheading). The quality of gateroad is influenced principally by the face-end system employed, standard of gateside pack and width of pillar. A good standard of gateroad is generally achieved by employing the half-heading face-end system, the gateside pack and coal rib pillar having comparative support/ yield (stiffness factor) characteristics. However, the halfheading is often not favoured due to face operation restrictions."
