Since the first commercial plant was built at Mount Isa, another twenty ISASMELT™ furnaces have come into commercial operation, and construction of new plants continues. The primary copper ISASMELT™ top submerged lance (TSL) technology continues to attract interest from potential users who seek to smelt productively. In addition to the known benefits of productivity and flexibility, ISASMELT™ operators have also achieved improvements to energy efficiency when switching from their previous technologies. The recent production statistics for operation at Tuticorin, India show that ISASMELT™ has taken the first steps into territory beyond 400,000 t/y (copper cathode basis) and this will likely be the scale chosen by future new copper smelters operating purely on a toll smelting basis. Good mechanical strength of green iron ore pellets is required to avoid breakage and excessive deformation during their handling and further processing. However, green balls with good resistance to handling are often too plastic, which impacts the bed permeability in induration furnaces. Measurements of plasticity, bed void fraction and green ball sphericity as well as bed permeability were carried out on various samples of green iron ore pellets having different mechanical strength. Results show that bed void fraction, sphericity and permeability all depend, to some extent, upon green ball mechanical strength (plasticity). Understanding and controlling the mechanical strength of green iron ore pellets would then help to maximize both the productivity of the induration process as well as the quality of fired pellets through a more stable firing process. Results of research work carried out at COREM, with the objective of improving green ball characterization methods, are presented in this paper.

Newmont Ghana Gold Limited?s Ahafo operation have been working with Metso Process Technology & Innovation (PTI) since early 2009 to increase mill throughput from a combination of controlled blasting practices and optimised primary crusher and grinding circuit conditions. For such Mineto- Mill projects, PTI?s methodology is termed Process Integration & Optimisation (PIO). Ahafo operate a SAG mill, ball mill and pebble crusher (SABC) circuit that processes a range of primary ore of varying hardness from different pits which is blended with soft oxide material. The PTI study focussed on ball mill limited material from the Apensu open pit. Following a benchmarking study of all blasting, crushing and grinding practices in January 2009, PTI recommended changes in both blasting and crushing conditions in order to generate a finer feed size to the SAG mill. Additional operating changes in the grinding circuit were recommended. A series of trials were conducted in November 2009 where three blasts were fired using a different blast design (hole diameter and explosive type) in the same area of the Apensu pit as the benchmarked material in January 2009. Top and bottom benches (or flitches) from each blast were sent exclusively to the grinding circuit and the material was tracked using PTI?s SmartTag? system. The results from the six trials showed a significant increase in primary ore throughput at a reduced blend of oxide material. Ahafo have since standardised on these modified blasting conditions for all Apensu ore zones and have been able to sustain higher throughput compared to historical performance on similar material. This paper summarises the phases of the PIO project, the changes made in operating practices and the outcomes of the blasting trials that validated the predicted increase in mill throughput.

"Pulverized limestone rock dust used in United States underground coal mines to prevent and suppress coal dust explosions must easily disperse by forces of a methane or coal dust explosion. Moisture in the mine environment causes caking of the dust. Colorado School of Mines researchers performed dispersibility tests in a full-size explosion test drift. Tests included conventional, hydrophobized, and rock dust approved for German mines. Conventional and German standard rock dust products partially agglomerate, which may not be effective in suppressing a coal dust explosion, while hydrophobic rock dust retains better dispersibility.INTRODUCTIONA coal dust explosion devastated the Upper Big Branch mine in 2010 resulting in the death of 29 miners, the worst mining accident in the United States since 1972. The explosion propagated through approximately 65 km of active mine workings, but was extinguished in areas that had been properly rock dusted (Page, 2011). Researchers have long studied and established the ability of inert limestone rock dust to suppress coal dust explosions, see Richmond et al. (1975), Cybulski (1975), and Sapko et al. (2000).To be effective, rock dust must contribute to a total inert content of > 80% by weight and 100% of rock dust particles must pass through an 850 µm sieve, while 70% of the rock dust must be finer than 74 µm. This is established in US regulations 30 CFR §75.2. Dry rock dust is a nuisance that prevents mining work downwind from rock dusting activities. To overcome this problem, dust manufacturers have proposed applying the rock dust as a wet slurry or foam. After drying, manufacturers expected the slurry or foam-applied dust to have the same explosion suppression capabilities as dry-applied rock dust.Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) designed and built a full-scale, underground Explosion Test Facility (ETF) at the CSM Edgar Experimental Mine in Idaho Springs, Colorado about 20 miles west of the CSM Golden, Colorado campus. To disperse the different rock dust products, researchers produced an air pressure pulse using a mesh array of PETN detonation cord. This method is simpler, more reproducible and safer than other methods considered, including methane-air explosions and a compressed air cannon. The detonation cord blasts produce a wind velocity of 30 to 50 m/s, the minimum velocity at which coal dust explosions can propagate, based on research by Nagy (1981) and Cybulski (1975)."

"Characterizing the spatial distribution of rock stresses is a challenge, especially in the geologically complex environments typically found at most metalliferous mines. Therefore, instead of focusing, specifically, on the task of making stress measurements, the engineer should instead attempt to develop a better understanding of the interaction between stress, mining geometry and rock mass behaviour. This paper demonstrates such an approach using a Canadian Shield hardrock mine case study, in which geomechanical models are used to relate stress, mining geometry, and rock mass properties to observed excavation response, and numerical modelling is used to better quantify this interaction.IntroductionUnderstanding how the mine geometry, field stresses and rock mass interact to produce the observed rock mass response to mining can be a significant challenge. Consider our present ability to quantify the basic geomechanical design input data. Mine geometry is normally quantified in more detail than is required for analysis purposes. Our understanding of rock mass strength and stiffness is far from complete, but established procedures do exist to obtain estimates of these parameters based on index and laboratory testing data and field mapping. Our ability to quantify field stresses is probably the most limited, in part because stress measurements are difficult and expensive to carry out, and in part because the stresses vary to an unknown degree from point to point within the rock mass. The engineer must, therefore, consider whether or not stress measurements are justified and, when they are, where the average stress state needs to be quantified and how many of which type of measurements will be required to determine the average stresses.Such was the case at Ansil mine, a massive sulphide deposit in hard rock located at a depth of more than one kilometre in the northern Québec portion of the Canadian Shield. The Ansil orebody was relatively rich, but small, with the potential for significant stress-related problems. As a result, geomechanical design had to be done carefully from the start – there would be little opportunity to modify the mining strategy once production had begun, and the economic consequences of stope dilution and rock mass instability would be severe. "There is general consensus that as the world continues to change at an ever-increasing pace, companies must continually adapt their operations in order to remain competitive. Those that change fast enough, survive; those that don’t, perish quickly. Today, we hear that it is not worth the time preparing corporate business plans as they are out-of-date before the ink is dry. Within the corporate environment of the 1990s, we must “think” strategically, be a “learning organization”, keep our costs low, focus on our core competencies, stay as flexible as possible and create value. So-called “sustainable competitive advantages” can be obsolete before a patent is issued — if its even worthwhile patenting the advancement. This is industry in the 1990s.Now, while all this radical change has been underway in the global industrial environment, what have Canada’s universities been doing to keep pace with the change affecting one of their major stakeholders? Have they adapted their products and services to suit the new market conditions? Have they built closer links to industry to try to understand how better to serve this important client? Do they welcome industry input as to how to redefine their mission, objectives, strategies or their course contents? Do their students graduate with skills ideally tailored for the global mining industry? In the era of communication, can they write high quality reports in English, never mind speak French or Spanish?In an effort to provide Canada’s engineering faculties with a “blueprint” for the future, the Canadian Academy of Engineering pre-pared a report entitled “Engineering Education in Canadian Universities”, published in August1993, which concluded with the following recommendations:"

Subsequent to the unbundling of the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) and the privatization of its constituent parts, the Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) represents a third of the original conglomerate. Now run by private hands as a sub group of Vedanta Resources Plc of India, KCM is strategizing on how best to deal with the operational issues of the organisation to resolve some of the difficult, logistical, environmental, mineralogical and metallurgical problems being encountered to tum them into opportunities as the company turns around. This paper reviews the options being put in place to provide appropriate solutions and strategies including the treatment of the highly siliceous low energy copper belt concentrates in its mining operations in Zambia.

A study to investigate the recovery of base metals, notably copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc and manganese from iron-free concentrated chloride solutions using ion exchange was undertaken. In such solutions, apart from nickel and, to a lesser extent manganese, these metals are present predominantly as complex anions, and therefore conventional separation techniques based on cationic resins are not applicable. The results demonstrated that zinc, copper and cobalt can all be separately recovered leaving nickel and manganese behind. Specifically, zinc is a major nuisance element in nickel and cobalt processing, and the testwork showed that it can be preferentially removed prior to copper and cobalt. Selective resins for both copper and cobalt were identified, and it was demonstrated that the strength of the chloride background matrix has a significant effect on the efficiency of separation. An additional major advantage in such systems is that stripping can mostly be effected with water. Finally, some observations are made on the hurdles that must be overcome when attempting to introduce and commercialise new technologies.

"The Loss Prevention Program and management style applied at Kidd Creek enabled them to maintain a 1.02/200 000 man-hours accident frequency over a 20-year period. Falconbridge Limited, Kidd Creek Division operates a major zinc, copper, silver mine, two gold mines and a metallurgical facility in Timmins, Ontario. The metallurgical site and the base metal mine are 17 miles apart and joined by their own railroad. The minesite consists of two shafts, one 3000 feet deep and the other to 5200 feet deep, as well as the necessary maintenance and service shops. The metallurgical site consists of a 14 000 STPD concentrator, a zinc refining plant, copper smelter, copper refinery, and the necessary maintenance shops. The two gold mining operations are adjacent to the metallurgical site.At the time of writing this paper the workforce consisted of some 2500 people divided between the two sites. Nine hundred and ninety-two employees are stationed at the minesite, with the remainder at the metallurgical site and gold mines. The workforce in the Timmins operation is non-unionized and reflects the belief that employee interests are well served.Beside providing competitive wages and an excellent benefit package, Kidd Creek takes special pride in its employee relations practices and continued efforts in communication.In each of the programs referred to, there have been equal involvement by both management and the employees. Each crew, under the direction of a supervisor, makes up its own health and safety committee. To maintain a successful Loss Prevention Program, it is essential that management and the employees work closely together and provide meaningful input and effort to succeed.At this point, refer to the lost time injury frequency as a measure of failure and refer to the opposite end of the scale as the measure of success. The ultimate goal of every operating company is to have a zero frequency, therefore denoting 100070 success. The company uses most of the tangible safety aids found in other mining operations, such as safety posters, safety reminders, check lists, and the use of the Neil George Safety System. The difference is the manner and style of management at the Kidd Creek Division. Their ""open door"" policy and the close association, between management and the employees, has always served them well. Also, at Kidd Creek they believe they have a well-trained and dedicated workforce."

About 1973 the abrupt decrease in crude oil shipments due to political action by Middle Eastern suppliers, caused a shortage and a steep price rise. In response, Canada had to develop strategies of diminishing consumption and increasing production in both traditional and environmentally friendly resources. To clarify the situation in Canada, there are brief histories of energy (discovery, pipelines), manufacturing and science development, 1800-1970. Energy strategies, both nationally and in Quebec, succeeded in curbing consumption and in expanding production while fostering research in renewable sources. The industry-sector committees provided free exchange of conservation techniques through the federal energy ministry, with progress reports issued annually. Pipeline history in North America is reviewed along with manufacture and construction plans in Canada. Considerable success in all the aspects provided long lasting benefits, but after the embargo was lifted, many research initiatives were gradually abandoned for political reasons. Sustainability is the goal; society must conduct conserver analysis, legislation and action to enhance it.

"With the increase of shaft excavation depth, the thickness of the shaft lining increases sharply. It is difficult to reduce thickness of lining effectively by improving high-strength concrete performance. The concept of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is that surrounding rock plays a certain role in tunnel support. The solution should be to find the correct relationship between shaft lining thickness and rock strength, which is related with the interaction between the surrounding rock and concrete lining. The plane strain mechanics model is introduced to calculate lining thickness. Shaft lining design of Cixi Colliery in China is completed with the mechanics-based method proposed in this study. The lining design is verified through numerical simulation and field monitoring. The simulation results show that the maximum mises stress is located at the inner edge of the shaft lining. The increase of lining thickness cannot effectively reduce concrete grade. The monitoring results indicate that a lining design thickness of 900mm with C60 concrete, is safe and reliable in the shaft over 1000metres.This analytical design method can well be referenced in similar deep shaft projects.INTRODUCTION The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), thought to have helped revolutionize the modern tunneling method, is the most extensive design philosophy and construction principle in today's tunnel engineering. It began to attract attention in the 1960s based on the work of Ladislaus von Rabcewicz, Leopold Müller, and Franz Pacher in Austria[1]. NATM was originally developed for tunneling in depth and in high situ-stress conditions in the Alps. The history of sequential excavation was reviewed, which highlights the progress of tunnel design and construction in Europe after NATM[2]. Structural conditions were introduced into the equilibrium of tunnels in NATM, and the additional force was estimated to stabilize the excavation of the tunnel[3].From the perspective of applied mechanics, there was no accuracy theory to explain the interaction between the tunnel structure and the surrounding ground. Wear has been estimated to cost the Canadian mining/mineral processing industry over $15 billion per year mainly for repair/replacement of worn parts in 2013. The associated production loss is difficult to quantify but add considerably to the problem. The Canadian oil sands sector which has to deal with extremely abrasive and erosive solids, has traditionally incurred extremely severe and often unique attack. Demonstrable progress in mitigating the wear problems has been achieved through materials development, more informed materials selections, and better component and operation condition designs. An integral contributor to these advances is a long-term collaborative research partnership between NRC and the mining/supply industry. In this paper, this continuing collaboration will be described. A main focus is to identify degradation mechanisms occurring in the most severe and important service applications and to correlate these findings with laboratory test data. Relevant abrasion and erosion (often combined with corrosion) properties have been established and correlated with composition and microstructures for all classes of resistant materials ranging from relatively soft elastomers to ultra-hard ceramics. A comprehensive wear properties database has been compiled. This capability has been instrumental in facilitating the development of improved materials, optimizing materials fitness/selection for service, wear failure analysis, and quality assurance.

ABSTRACT: The Victor diamond mine is located in the James Bay lowlands, 90 km west of the First Nations village of Attawapiskat. The project was the first of its kind in northern Ontario. The process plant was designed to produce a 95 to 98% by weight diamond concentrate through three stages of comminution, dense medium separation, and proprietary X-ray technology for final recovery. The plant was commissioned over a period of six months, commencing prior to substantial completion of construction. Through effective planning of the commissioning phase, the Victor mine start-up was safely completed nine months ahead of schedule.

"Energy efficiency in mining and minerals processing has attracted considerable public and industry attention because of the significant quantities of energy consumption involved. In this context the question of what are worthwhile targets for energy efficiency improvements ought to be of the highest priority. It is however worth taking a step back to avoid falling in the trap of taking preconceived ideas that have been reiterated repeatedly before as gospel. The aim of this paper is to highlight areas where new or alternative approaches could potentially be the better way forward. Some may come as a surprise to conventional industry thinking. Ultimately any such solutions are attractive to practitioners not just in an environmental but also in an economic sense, and hence should be targeted through applied research and development efforts. This paper highlights key aspects of each group of opportunities and some of the individual approaches to provide an overview of the current status quo.MINING INDUSTRY POWER UTILISATION – WHERE IS THE BIGGEST BANG FOR THE BUCK?The question of where is the biggest bang for the buck when trying to determine worthwhile targets for energy efficiency improvements has not always been reported on broadly enough, typically because industry practitioners operate in specific areas of expertise and comfort zone. Looking beyond the familiar doesn’t always come easy. Any technology or methodology consideration to address energy efficiency needs to take into account the context of alternative opportunities of superior value or risks not achieving desired uptake. The following sub-chapters have been ordered by magnitude of improvement potential as best as is possible, starting with the biggest first, and the smallest last. Some may be a surprise relative to conventional mining industry thinking."

"A novel reagent-free method of extracting gold from gravity middling concentrates in the Yukon placer fields is presented in this paper. This method exploits the malleability of gold by submitting concentrates to grinding in a rod mill. Brittle waste minerals are effectively reduced, whereas malleable gold particles are flattened and are then extracted by classification through sieves. Recoveries in the field using a laboratory-sized rod mill regularly exceeded 90%, whereas correlation laboratory tests indicated recovery to be most sensitive to the mill charge size. This method has broad potential, including application to the gravity circuits of large hard-rock processing circuits.RÉSUMÉ Cet article présente une nouvelle méthode sans agents réactifs d’extraction de l’or dans les concentrés gravimétriques mixtes que l’on trouve dans les districts placériens du Yukon. Cette méthode exploite la malléabilité de l’or en broyant des concentrés dans un broyeur à barres. Les déchets miniers cassants sont bien réduits, alors que les particules d’or malléables sont écrasées puis extraites par classification au travers de cribles. Si les récupérations sur le site à l’aide d’un broyeur à barres de laboratoire excèdent 90 %, les essais de concordance en laboratoire indiquent que la récupération est très sensible à la taille de la charge du broyeur. Cette méthode présente un grand potentiel, notamment une application possible aux circuits gravimétriques des grands circuits de traitement des roches dures.INTRODUCTIONExploiting the high density of gold to separate it from waste materials is the oldest known mineral processing technique. This basic technique is still widely used in gravity concentration circuits today; however, gravity processing invariably results in high-value middlings, especially in the Yukon placer gold fields. In addition to having a uniquely high density, gold is also the most malleable metal. This unique malleability can be exploited to extract gold from otherwise inaccessible gravity middlings.The Yukon placer gold industry has been continuously ongoing since the 1860s, and today produces approximately 60,000 oz t (1.87 million grams) of crude gold annually, most of which is from the Klondike region near Dawson City (Van Loon & Bond, 2014). It is important to note that Yukon placer miners do not use any chemical extraction methods; rather, gravity upgrading methods are the sole processing techniques used. Placer deposits are typically coarse, well liberated, and naturally gravity concentrated and recoverable, thus making more expensive chemical extraction unnecessary (Mitchell, Evans, & Styles, 1997). Furthermore, a strict permitting regime, environmental concerns, lack of expertise, and fear of repercussions from regulators prevent miners from attempting more advanced processing methods, such as flotation or cyanidation. Even simple chemical extractions like mercury amalgamation have not been implemented for decades, with one observer noting that, as many as 30 years ago, “the art of mercury for amalgamating appear[ed] to be dying [in the Yukon]” (Osler, 1983)."

This paper focuses on the dissolution of various Manganese based compact additions into liquid Magnesium. The experimental procedure employed cylindrical compacts with various Manganese compositions. The various temperatures of the additions and the Magnesium bath were measured simultaneously during the immersion of the additions into Magnesium bath. The exothermicity level of these additions during their dissolution into liquid Magnesium was determined. The relation of the exothermicity level with the dissolution kinetics was also examined. In addition, SEM and EDX work was conducted for additions, which were withdrawn from the Magnesium bath. Finally, the recovery of these additions was estimated by taking samples from the Magnesium bath and conducting ICP analyses.

Numerical simulations of straight tube hydroforming of a dual phase steel were performed using both upper and lower bound constitutive models for porous ductile materials. The Gurson model is based upon an upper bound approximation to the material behavior and thus overestimates formability. Conversely, a lower bound solution to Gurson's unit cell geometry was developed by Sun and Wang to provide a conservative estimate of formability. The effect of a compressive axial load (end-feed) on damage development and tube formability is investigated. The resulting upper and lower bound models successfully captured the experimentally determined burst pressure, formability and failure location.

"This article describes the project development and successful implementation of a particle sorter at the Kensington mine. The Kensington underground gold mine and associated milling facilities are located within the Berners Bay Mining District on the east side of Lynn Canal about 45 miles north-northwest of Juneau, Alaska. The paper describes the project from concept, through the development phase, including test work confirming feasibility, to a discussion of operational data and includes shared experiences from operation and maintenance. The project has proven successful in recovering gold that was previously lost to the waste dump and has already resulted in a positive return on investment. The payback was achieved in less than one year.INTRODUCTION The first paragraphs of this paper describe Coeur Mining and the Kensington Mine, its history, geology, mining operation and mill. The second part of this paper gives a quick introduction to sensor-based sorting in general and X-ray transmission sorting (XRT) in particular. This article does not cover costs or economic impacts apart from the pay-back period for the investment at Kensington. Interested readers find more in information on this in the literature (Kleine & Wotruba, 2010; Robben, 2013). Since the publication about XRT sorting at TGME in Pilgrim’s Rest (Kleine, Riedel, Ketelhodt, & Murray, 2010), this is the first time that a comprehensive data set on gold ore sorting using XRT is published. Following chapters highlight the aim of the project for Coeur Kensington, project development through testing and operation before concluding. ABOUT COEUR MINING’S KENSINGTON OPERATION Coeur Mining is the largest U.S.-based silver producer and a significant gold producer with five precious metals mines in the Americas employing approximately 2,100 people. Coeur produces from its wholly owned operations: the Palmarejo silver-gold mine in Mexico, the San Bartolomé silver mine in Bolivia, the Rochester silver-gold mine in Nevada, the Kensington gold mine in Alaska, and the Wharf gold mine in South Dakota. The Company also has a non-operating interest in the Endeavor mine in Australia in addition to royalties on the Cerro Bayo mine in Chile, the El Gallo complex in Mexico, the Zaruma mine in Ecuador, and the Correnso mine in New Zealand. ABSTRACT Segregation of sphalerite minerals in zinc concentrates into christophite, marmatite and ordinary sphalerite by means of magnetic fractionation is investigated. A Frantz ferromagnetic filter, 1.2 amp., and a Dings magnet, 0.3 amp., is used to fractionate seven zinc concentrates produced in the Province of Quebec. The Dings magnetic product contains the pyrrhotite, and the sphalerite as christophite. The Frantz magnetic product contains sphalerite as marmatite, while the Frantz nonmagnetic product contains ordinary sphalerite. The results indicate that the magnetic susceptibility of sphalerite increases with increasing isomorphous iron content and that a satisfactory separation into christophite, marmaite, and ordinary sphalerite may be accomplished by magnetic fractionation. INTRODUCTION SPHALERITE, the chief ore of zinc, is almost never pure zinc sulphide. Iron is almost always present isomorphously replacing an ?equivalent amount of zinc. What may be referred to as 'ordinary' sphalerite contains up to 10 per cent iron. More highly ferriferous varieties, with 10 to 26 per cent or more iron, have been named marmatite .and christophite.

Altered and unaltered coal from the Star-Key Mine near Edmonton, Alberta has been tested under compression and under tension. The test results showed that altered coal samples have an appreciably lower strength than unaltered coal. Altered coal samples do not give a linear load-displacement curve, peak strengths are poorly defined and yielding is observed over a range of loads, so the material can be regarded as relatively plastic. However, unaltered coal samples produce a linear loading curve with a high tangential modulus and an easily distinguished peak strength at which there is a sudden brittle failure. These findings lead to important differences in the theoretical design of ribs and pillars in underground mines in the two coal types. The substantial differences in the strength properties and behaviour of the two types of coal are governed by a higher intensity of cracks in the weathered coal. Two causes of the additional cracking can be suggested-subaerial weathering and subterranean weathering of the coal.
