The detonation pressure of an explosive is a function of its density and its velocity of detonation (VOD) and relates directly to the degree and manner in which the explosive loads the surrounding rock. The suitabil- ity of an explosive to any particular situation is determined not so much by the total energy released but more by the rate at which it is released. As the science of rock blasting advances it is becoming economically more important to quantify explosive performance, particularly with respect to quality control and fragmentation. As part of a major explosive user, BHP Central Research Laboratories have developed a number of tech- niques to determine the detonation characteristics of explosives. These include a method of continuous velocity of detonation measurement based on the SLIFER principle. This not only enables the VOD of the explo- sive to be determined, but also has the versatility to allow factors such as under priming, slow run up, the effect of water, variable energy load- ing and the velocity of the shock wave in the stemming to be assessed. Multi point VOD systems have also been developed for more routine appli- cations. With a minor modification they can be used to determine the absolute delay of detonators accurately and economically. Direct deto- nation pressure measurement methods have also been developed based on piezoresistive techniques. Future developments include the incorpo- ration of all the above techniques into a single, portable package, allow- ing easy use on the mine site.

The Australian minerals sector has a shortage of skilled professionals to satisfy an industry that is experiencing renewed vitality. Graduate numbers are low throughout Australia and the world, while economic rationalisation is seeing many educational institutions downsize, or even close, their minerals-related programs. In addition to requiring more entry-level graduates, minerals producers are looking to update the skills of their current workforce to keep up with the industryÆs continuing technological revolution. To address the issue the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) endorsed collaboration between several Australian minerals producers and a team of universities to generate the Mineral Tertiary Education Council, or MTEC. MTEC recently initiated a venture to increase the availability of professionals with relevant skills to the minerals industry. Primarily aimed at delivering postgraduate programs, the initiative will allow graduates from other disciplines to æconvertÆ to the minerals sector as well as provide professional development training to an existing work force. This venture represents a novel approach in that courses will be delivered by more than one institution and will employ innovative teaching materials with flexible and remote delivery formats. The programs will cater specially for professional development in the minerals sector, which generally requires high flexibility due to the nature of work conditions and locations.

Narrow vein gold mineralisation generally contains both fine (<100 ¦m) and coarse (>100 ¦m) gold particles. The in situ size and shape, deportment, distribution and abundance of the particles controls deposit sampling characteristics, grade distribution and metallurgical properties. Particles can range from individual disseminated grains, clusters of particles and masses above 1 cm in size. At each end of the coarse-gold to fine-gold spectrum, the samplability of a deposit ranges from relatively simple for fine-grained disseminated gold particles, through to extremely difficult for very coarse particles. Deposits generally show a background grade of mineralisation dominated by disseminated fine gold particles. Drilling will resolve the background grade well, though is likely to considerably understate the grade related to the coarser gold particles. Gold mineralogy has a significant impact on metallurgy, with key factors affecting recovery being particle size, deportment, liberation parameters and silver content of gold minerals. For coarse gold particles the focus should be on liberation and the early removal of the particles from the mill circuit by gravity concentrators and gold traps. Finer particles will require more grinding to liberate prior to flotation or cyanide extraction. The determination of gold particle sizing is thus required to minimise evaluation and geometallurgical uncertainty and lower project risk.

Zinc and lead sulphide flotation con centrates containing from 0.02 to 0.20% Cd are roasted on an updraught sinter machine at the Cockle Creek Works of Sulphide Corp- oration Pty. Limited to provide sinter for simultaneous smelting of zinc and lead in an Imperial Smelting Furnace (I.S.F.). The major portion (about 85%) of cad- mium in concentrate feed to the Sinter Plant is eliminated with sinter fume and is rec- overed by weak acid leaching in the Cadmium Plant'followed by counter-current decantat- ion, ion exchange concentration, precipitat- ion of cadmium sponge and partial refining to caustic refined cadmium metal. Cadmium not eliminated during sintering is volatilised in the I.S.F. and subsequently recovered as zinc alloy by distillation in the zinc ref- ining columns of the Zinc Refluxer. The partially refined cadmium metal and cadmium- zinc alloy are blended as feed to the cadm- ium refining column where separation and recovery of cadmium is effected. Condensate from the column is further refined under caustic soda flux and cast into anode shapes. Production is 200 t.p.a. at 85% recovery of cadmium in concentrates. The emerging discipline of ægeometallurgyÆ is not new but is becoming increasingly recognised as a discrete and high-value activity that reflects an ongoing commercial and cultural trend towards more effective mine site integration and optimisation. The AMIRA International P843 æGeMIIIÆ project (Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling) is a major new cross discipline research collaboration designed to provide support for this emerging industry trend. The project is currently supported by 18 global mineral companies and involves collaboration between the CODES Centre of Excellence (University of Tasmania), JKMRC and BRC (University of Queensland) and CSIRO Exploration and Mining. These groups represent recognised research excellence in the fields of economic geology, automated core logging, advanced microscopy and process mineralogy, mineral processing, mine planning and resource optimisation. The needs and challenges of geometallurgy as an integrated activity will be outlined together with the ongoing contribution and aims of the AMIRA P843 æGeMIIIÆ project. The main emphasis is on development of predictive geometallurgical indices for key processing performance parameters that reflect inherent geological variability. The ultimate aim is to provide predictive indices of geometallurgical performance that can be confidently embedded into resource models and used for risk-defined mine planning and optimisation.

Studies by Tennent, Isokangas Pty Ltd (TIP) have indicated that underground quarrying of backfill may be a cost competitive option for providing backfill for specialised situations in underground mining. Situations where suitable bulk fill material may not be available on the surface, and where the total cost of setting up a fill distribution system are prohibitive, could favour the mining of fill material underground adjacent to the stopes being mined. Considerations include environmental impact, scheduling, surface constraints and total costs. The examples quoted in this paper, and the case studies are based on the authorsÆ personal observations and experience.

Technological advances evolve in different ways; many are the result of years of application of scientific method. i.e. Observation Deduction Hypothesis Proof In the mining industry, better explosives, drill bits or reagents are likely to evolve in this way. The scientific method is suited to the application of conventional management structures. Other advances are simply the result of a "brainstorm", or building a better mousetrap. Such inspiration probably resulted in "Split Set" rock bolts, or the first use of a vacuum cleaner principle for shaft mucking. Individual consultants can apply lateral thinking to generate such inspiration. In gathering material for the presentation of this paper, I sent a.letter to all members of the Mineral Industry Consultants Association asking them to nominate problems in the industry requiring investigation. The answers have been divided into two classifications - contract research underway and identified problems requiring solutions.

In conjunction with Orica Explosives, Worsley Alumina have managed a program of continuous improvement to their cap rock blasting over the last two years. Blasting conditions are challenging because of the hard and shallow nature of the material. Blasting costs must be controlled and the environmental consideration of noise and dust is critical. Worsley have sought to determine the optimum balance between drilling and blasting costs and fragmentation. As the cap rock has few inherent weaknesses, loader productivity is strongly controlled by the degree of fragmentation from blasting. The optimum blasting solution is also constrained by maintaining airblast levels at the surrounding residences below 115 dBL . The major blast design parameters optimised during the program were stemming type, stemming length, powder factor and blasthole diameter. A series of carefully managed trial blasts were fired during 1997 and 1998 to quantify the effect of these parameters. Fragmentation was digitally measured using OricaÆs Powerseive G technique. Shovel productivity, airblast levels and blasting costs were also quantified. As a result of the project, Worsley now have an increased knowledge of the key parameters driving blast performance, and their consequent impact on downstream processes, the environment and total mining cost.

The New Zealand (NZ) Transport Agency’s Waterview Connection will complete Auckland’s Western Ring Route, a 47 km north–south motorway alternative to Stage Highway 1. The project is being delivered by the Well-Connected Alliance comprising the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), Fletcher Construction, McConnell Dowell Constructors, Obayashi Corporation, Parsons Brinckerhoff NZ, Beca Infrastructure and Tonkin & Taylor.The project involves construction of 5 km of new motorway, nearly half of it underground connecting State Highway 20 (SH20) to State Highway 16 (SH16). The underground portion of the project incorporates twin 13.2 m inside diameter (ID) tunnels 2.4 km long, each carrying three traffic lanes, one for north-bound traffic and one for south-bound traffic. The tunnels are being driven by a 14.46 m outside diameter (OD) 2400 t, tunnel boring machine (TBM) shield that was assembled and launched at the southern portal. It will be turned and re-launched at the northern portal for the return drive to the southern portal where it will be disassembled. This paper presents two major temporary works elements contributing to the successful launch of the TBM: the TBM assembly crane platform and the TBM shove frame and associated components.Tunnel boring machine shield assembly – crane platformThe TBM shield was delivered to site in subassemblies ranging in weight from 100 to 380 t. It was initially proposed to use a 750 t crawler crane sitting above the tunnel portal headwall to assemble and disassemble the TBM. However, this did not have sufficient capacity to allow the TBM shield to advance clear of the tunnel before disassembly commences. To reduce the crane’s working radius a temporary steel crane platform was developed that is supported on the side walls of the tunnel approach trench. This has enabled a smaller, less expensive, 600 t crawler crane to be used and will allow the TBM shield to clear the tunnel before disassembly.Tunnel boring machine launch – temporary worksTo launch the TBM a purpose built steel frame was required for the TBM thrust rams to react against. The shove frame had to be able to transfer the thrust loads from the TBM shield to the ground below and thrust wall behind. A range of potential thrust loads and jacking patterns were examined to develop the design load cases for the shove frame. The shove frame was used to launch the TBM at the southern portal and to re-launch it at the northern portal. The Adavale Basin and Warrabin Trough are remnants of a much more extensive Devonian to Carboniferous depression which evolved through four tectonic stages; an initial period of rifting and three periods of foreland thrusting, which cannibalized much of the earlier depression. The Basin has subsequently been buried by sediments of the Galilee and Eromanga Basins.The Basin was initiated during the Early Devonian when the earlier cratonized Thompson Foldbelt rifted away to form a marginal sea comparable to the South China sea. This crustal extension was probably in a Northeast-Southwest direction. These initial rifts were the site of acid volcanism (Gumbarbo Formation) and later, deltaic and shallow marine facies (Eastwood Beds).

Expert systems have been employed in a number of areas for a considerable number of years. However, the traditional long development times associated with these systems have restricted their application. With the advent of powerful Expert System Development Tools such as COMDALE/X and the use of efficient development techniques, the time required can be drastically reduced. This results in the availability and applicability of this technology to a wide range of applications. This paper discusses some of the 'rules' which indicate amenability (or otherwise) of a particular problem to an expert system solution. Various problem types are examined and these are illustrated with reference to examples of their use at various operating sites.

The paper deals with the taking of soundings in connection with coal mining operations under part of the Pacific Ocean adjoining John Darling Colliery.INTRODUCTIONIn the early days of mining in the Newcastle District there did not appear to be any definite law specifying the limits to which mine workings, other than certain borings, could extend under tidal waters.As time went on, a figure of 120 ft. was fixed as the minimum thickness of strata between the roof of the seam and the sea bottom; beyond this mining operations are disallowed. The Western Australian gold industry has approximately 100 operating plants, mainly CIP/CIL. The nature of the State's rapidly expanding gold industry gave rise to concerns over management of the cyanide hazard, in that most plants are remote from major population centres, have a workforce with a high turn over and use highly saline process water. Approximately 4,500 workers in the industry have the potential to be exposed to cyanide in the course of their normal work.This paper outlines the risk management strategy developed by Government and industry to monitor atmospheric HCN gas in the work environment and the role of continuing education and training along with regular site inspections by Department of Mines Inspectors.

The Grasberg Mine is a copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) and located in the high equatorial mountains of the Indonesian province of Papua. The climate is alpine/subalpine with little seasonal variation in temperature or rainfall. The daily average temperature ranges from about 2¦C to 14¦C and the annual rainfall in the vicinity of the mine and overburden stockpiles is about 4000 mm to 5000 mm. Mining of the Grasberg open pit will continue until 2014 at which time approximately 2750 Mt of overburden will have been produced. Current overburden production rates are 200 Mt per annum. The current mill rate is 230 000 t/day from the Grasberg pit (190 000 t/day) and the underground operations (40 000 t/day). The acid rock drainage (ARD) issues associated with overburden from the Grasberg operations were identified early in the mining operation. Almost all overburden placed to date has been Potentially Acid Forming (PAF). Laboratory testing has identified four main overburden types: limestone and non-acid forming (Green waste), PAF low capacity (Blue waste) and PAF high capacity (Red waste), and Heavy Sulfide Zone (HSZ), which contains greater than 20 per cent pyrite. Waste type block modelling indicates that at least 30 per cent of the overburden production from 2003 to the end of Grasberg pit operations will be limestone. Strategies are being developed to maximise the beneficial use of limestone through strategic blending and placement for ARD mitigation and control.

"Column leach tests are used frequently to predict recoveries and reagent consumption for nickel laterite heap leaches. These column leaches often run for more than 100 days and therefore require long-term monitoring and data analysis to achieve the desired information. To minimise the cost and time required to obtain relevant information for nickel laterite heap leaching, we have developed a small-scale hydrogeometallurgical laboratory test to serve as a proxy to column, and by inference, heap leaching. In excess of 50 leach tests were conducted using four different small-scale proxy and column leach tests to compare predicted nickel recoveries, acid consumption and leach kinetics and to determine whether insight into potential scale-up effects can be obtained. The most promising proxy test was identified and we achieved a statistically significant recovery and acid consumption correlations between this test and the column leach tests. The accuracy of the small-scale tests was confirmed by column tests run on new laterite ores. The largest surface coal mine in North America requires complex materials handling infrastructure to fulfil the highly variable quality specifications of its contracts. These diverse demands, reflected in the arrival of numerous customer trains every day, necessitate the integration of information in every stage of production. To meet this goal, quality measurement, train line-up and mine planning processes are being integrated into local and remote control rooms. The effectiveness of such a system can only be measured by comparing decisions that are made with, and without, each of the individual integrated control systems. Traditionally, mine controllers use their experience, intuition or a variety of trial-and-error spreadsheets to determine the ideal materials handling flows needed to achieve the correct quality. These balanced decisions are complex since many factors must be considered such as the mine plan, fleet costs, quality variability and others; consequently mine controllers usually have widely varying success between crews.An evaluation model was developed to assess the impact of a decision support system (DSS) integrated in a control room for controlling the coal blending process. To this end, an ARENA-based simulator representing the whole production process can be used to pull performance and current materials handling settings directly either from the real-time systems in the mine, or from historical data. In this way, the same shift (breakdowns, cycle rates, etc) can be simulated and performance compared. Different settings of the DSS, in terms of what information is displayed and the methods for doing so, can be tested for effectiveness. The historical data are extracted directly from a corporate data warehouse, without altering the everyday working databases. At the same time, the simulator writes its results back into the same data warehouse structure, allowing the same KPI reports to be used to measure simulated shifts.

AND INTRODUCTION The Lochiel coal deposit, a large Tertiary soft brown coal deposit in the mid north of South Australia, is currently being investigated by the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) as a potential source of fuel for a base load power station. Feasibility studies indicated that the proposed dragline method of overburden removal was viable but economically sensitive to both highwail and dump batter angles. The unusual properties of the unconsolidated overburden sediments and the groundwater regime posed a number of intimately related hydrogeological and geotechnical questions which were addressed before and during the excavation of a trial pit. All strata at Lochiel are of soil strength, and artesian aquifers occur above and below the coal. From the initial evaluation of the deposit a number of hydrogeological questions were defined. These related to the rate at which the pore pressure in the silts is reduced by dewatering, the extent of the reduction in pore pressure due to prestripping, and the feasibility of dewatering and depressurising carbonaceous silty sand sequences. The site of the trial pit was selected to answer these and other questions from the basis of a detailed geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical understanding. The trial pit dewatering system simulated a full scale mine dewatering system and included ten pumped wells, twenty drainage wells, and nearly 400 monitoring instruments. It operated from September 1986 to June 1987. The excavation was carried out between February and May 1987.
