The colliery is owned by the BHP Collieries Proprietary Ltd., the principal shareholders being the Broken Hill Pty. Company Ltd. and Hebburn Limited.It is situated due west of Newcastle and 6 south-east of Cessnock, N.S.W., and is conneeted by 36 miles of railway to the port of Neweastle. Of this mileage, 3 miles are owned by the Company, 3 by Hebburn Limited, 9 by the South Maitland Railways Ltd., and 21miles by the Government Railways.The seam worked is known as the Main Greta Seam of the Greta Coal Measures and is on the southern slope of the Lochinvar anticline.At the shaft, the seam is 1190 ft. below the surface, and the section of the coal measures is:-Upper or Main Seam, . 24 ft. 0 in.Conglomerate and shale 70 ft. 0 in.'Middle Seam 8 in.Conglomerate 25 ft. 0 in,Bottom Seam 1 ft. 2 in.These lie between two marine measures, and are the lower coal series of the permo-carboniferous period.Only the upper seam is workable in this area, the lower seams being too thin for eompetitive working. The section of the workable seam at the shafts is as shown on Fig. 1.Unfortunately, only the lower 12 ft. 5 in. of the seam is saleable.

BHP Diamonds and their joint-venture participants DiaMet Minerals, Chuck Fipke and Stewart Blusson are currently developing Canada's first commercial diamond mine in the arctic barren lands of the Northwest Territories (NWT) of Canada. The paper reviews the early history of the project leading up to the discovery of the first kimberlite pipe in September 1991, diamond exploration techniques and the subsequent advanced exploration and development work carried out at the site. In many aspects, this exploration work represented a development project in itself. Coinciding with the advanced exploration work, the project team prepared an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and went through federal review of the project at the highest level. Prior to mine development, exploration drilling within the Luise Caldera on Niolam Island encountered gold mineralisation to the northwest of the main Minifie and Lienetz orebodies. This mineralisation was referred to as the Kapit orebody, and ten diamond drill holes were subsequently completed over the area to investigate its economic potential. Several significant mineralised intercepts were returned. These were interpreted using the orebody model developed for Lihir at that time which invoked a strong horizontal control to mineralisation. Additional consideration was given to the elevated geothermal temperatures encountered, the proximity of the mineralisation to the ocean, and its perceived depth below sea level, resulting in the Kapit area being given a low priority for follow up investigation. As a result, no further work was completed over Kapit until recently. The Kapit orebody was the target of an intense diamond drilling programme during 2002/2003. Data from this latest round of drilling has significantly improved understanding of the mineralisation and associated geology. The significant orebody now delineated at Kapit substantially differs from past interpretations, and the latest data has upgraded its economic potential. A resource estimate and other critical studies completed in 2003 enabled an updated reserve statement to be issued in February 2004 including the Kapit mineralisation for the first time. Total Probable Reserves at Kapit stand at 25.2 million tonnes (Mt) at 5.28 grams of gold per tonne (g Au/t), for a total of 4.3 million ounces (Moz) of contained gold.

The Kidston Gold Mine i s located in northern Queensland some 2 Ukm northwest of Townsville. I t is the largest gold mine in Australia and produces approximately 25 percent of Australia's gold and one percent of the world's gold.Initially, traditional mining industry management approaches resulted in the rejection of what appeared to be an attractive low-grade deposit as an uneconomic proposition. Critical re-examination revealed that the rejection was based upon managerial inflexibility and traditionally over-conservative methods of mine evaluation, construction, operation, projected commodity prices and contingency factors. The objectives of grade control remain unchanged but new methods are being developed to attain them. Since the early-1990s, an improvement in the power of mine site computers has made the geostatistical tools of conditional simulation more accessible. Optimisation of the grade control process on mine sites now involves two stages: optimisation of the sampling regime and optimisation of the interpretation of ore and waste boundaries. Optimisation of the sampling regime first requires an understanding of the nature of the mineralisation and in particular the impact of particle size on the sampling precision. This relationship, termed the Fundamental Error of sampling, enables an optimum subsampling protocol to be defined for the sample preparation and assaying. However, the actual sample collection method, whether drilling or trenching, must be correctly selected and the sampling grid should be optimised. The relative costs and benefits of various alternative sampling methods and grids can be determined using the method discussed. The use of the grade control data can also be optimised. In the past ore and waste boundaries were often defined using a linear interpolation algorithm that smoothed the data (such as polygonal, sectional, inverse distance squared or even kriging methods). Frequently the relative impact of ore loss and dilution could not be estimated. Conditional simulation to generate equiprobable alternative maps (realisations) can now be adopted to address these issues. A transfer function is then used to evaluate the similarities and differences between the maps. The Ore Block Optimisation (OBO¬) process is a transfer function that produces a three-dimensional model of the optimal ore block outlines. This provides a clear guide for the mining geologist to refine and mine. The nature of the transfer function and the inputs and outputs are discussed. In the past, reconciliation has been the `acid test' for any grade control system. Any ore blocking method based on conditional simulation can make use of the exhaustive data set to ensure that reconciliation between prediction and production will improve significantly. The OBO¬ method provides a guide to the mining geologist to ensure that the best ore blocks are mined. Misclassification between ore and waste is reduced, ore loss and dilution are minimised (and are measurable) and ore is optimally assigned to stockpiles of various cut-off grades. These advantages significantly enhance mine profitability and control of the mined grade.

Discovered in 1954 and mined since 1966, the X41 copper orebodies have produced over 143 Mt @ 3.3 per cent copper. By June 2002 the production from these orebodies had depleted the Mineral Resource to 36.6 Mt @ 2.8 per cent Cu (including 31.5 Mt @ 2.5 per cent Cu combined 2002 Ore Reserve). Mine production will ramp down to cessation beyond ten years. The 2002 Copper Business Study was commissioned to review the status of the Mount Isa copper business and to optimise the long-term strategy of the operations. The study resulted in a vastly improved geological and geostatistical model, and financial studies led to the optimisation of mine cut-off grades. Utilising these new models, a near-mine target generation workshop was conducted by the copper stream geology team. The workshop focussed on exploration for new ore sources and the extension of existing orebodies to supplement the Mineral Resource inventory for future conversion to Ore Reserves. Several prospective targets were identified and the Conceptual Northern 1100 Drilling program was subsequently designed. This paper shall discuss the practicalities of near-mine target generation in Mount Isa, the issues faced when locating and preparing drill sites in a mature mine environment, and the preliminary results of the drilling program so far.

Dr Eric Bumstead is to be commended for his recent paper on gold analysis, published in the March 1984 Proceedings. It is not often that someone in industry, rather than academia, takes the time to collect and report on such a volume of data, data which is of interest to everyone involved in gold exploration and development.After reading the paper I felt, as a geochemist and as ayer, that there was another side to this whole question of analysis that few people are aware of, i.e. the problem facing a laboratory and how the laboratory can try to give the customer maximum value for money spent.Analyses for gold are carried out for different reasons, depending on the aims of the geologist or metallurgist who presents the samples. These can broadly be separated into three classes, to answer the following questions.1. "Is there any gold in this sample?"2. "Approximately how much gold is there in this sample?"3. "How much gold is there in this sample?"In every case there is a different balance between accuracy and precision, cost and avoiding chemical problems. By "chemical problems", I mean such possibilities as samples containing high levels of sulphides, gold present as tellurides, cyanide being present, contamination with mercury, and other mineralogical oddities, plus problems such as samples containing grease.There is no such thing as one assay to cover all possibilities.Samples in category I come mostly from early stages of exploration.There are often large numbers of samples, their mineralogy is not well known and hence chemical problems could exist, but the explorer wants assays at a minimum level of precision and expects minimum cost. These characteristics do not easily come together, for although the precision required is low, the accuracy required is high at low levels. A small positive result when the true answer is nil could lead to a fruitless search and a waste of money. Conversely, a nil result, when the true answer is a small but significant level of gold, could lead to the passing over of an area that may warrant further work.Because there are conflicting requirements for this type of assay, the methods chosen must be a compromise and different assayers will balance these requirements differently and come to different conclusions. The methods cover sample preparation, assay sample size and variations in assay techniques.

"This study investigates the dual function of a temperature responsive anionic co-polymer of poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) as a selective flocculant/flotation collector. PNIPAM is used for separating hematite from 50:50 mixtures of hematite and quartz, at a variety of particle sizes. The performance of PNIPAM in this system is compared to that of conventional flotation collectors: sodium oleate and sodium dodecyl sulfate. The results of the study demonstrate that anionic PNIPAM used at 50¦C (above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST)) is the most effective flotation collector for hematite particles in the size range between 10 and 20 ¦m. This is attributed to the increased probability of both particle/bubble collision and particle/bubble attachment through the formation of hydrophobic hematite aggregates. Anionic PNIPAM used at 50¦C also produced the highest hematite recoveries for very fine hematite particles (circa 1 ¦m). However this recovery was completely unselective. This lack of selectivity is partially attributed to the activation of quartz particles by PNIPAM, but is thought to mainly occur as a result of entrapment of quartz particles within the matrix of hematite aggregates.CITATION:Forbes, E and Franks, G V, 2013. To control the airblast from blasting to regulatory limits at environmentally sensitive sites near the Collinsville Coal Mining Operations, it has been necessary for Thiess Mining to incorporate a wavefront reinforcement analysis model in the predictive environmental airblast design. Controlling airblast from cast blasting 70 m high faces with 2000-3000 kg of explosives per hole within 700 m of houses presents a considerable challenge to the blasting personnel. This paper describes the model used and summarises the results of an investigation designed to quantify the increase in airblast indicated by wavefront reinforcement diagrams to further calibrate the model for future prediction.

By 1996 ground control-related problems at Brunswick Mine had raised serious concerns regarding the safe and economical extraction of large portions of the reserves. These difficulties were mainly caused by high stress levels in pillars, instabilities resulting from wide spans supported by ageing support elements, and chronic difficulties supplying rock fill from the surface quarry to the underground workings, which resulted in many large voids remaining open for long periods of time. Significant changes have been implemented at the site since 1996, amongst which were a change of mining method, the introduction of paste backfill, the establishment of stress management measures, and the introduction of shotcrete on a large-scale. This paper focuses on the regional ground conditions associated with both the previously used primary-secondary mining method and the newly implemented pyramidal pillarless technique, as well as on some of the stress management measures implemented at the mine.

The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has developed an airborne sensor, the SWIR Full Spectrum Imager (SFSI) which detects in the Short Wave Infrared range of the solar spectrum from 1220 to 2420nm. In June of 1995, a demonstration flight was undertaken in the state of Nevada with the support of the companies listed above. The focus of the flight was to collect image data over well known mineral deposits with the objective of evaluating the applicability of this sensor to alteration mineral mapping. Some of the Nevada sites chosen include Cuprite and Goldfield, volcanic hosted acid sulfate systems; Yerington, a structurally complex porphyry copper deposit; and Virginia City, a Quartz- Sericite-Pyrite vein system with advanced argillic pods. Ground spectral data was collected with the PIMA-II spectrometer. Solar reflectance calibration was done by Desert Research Institute personnel at Virginia City and Cuprite. This paper will discuss the configuration of the sensor and present image and ground data for Goldfield and Virginia City.

The use of compressive crushing equipment such as gyratory crushers within minerals processing plants can potentially generate large quantities of dust. Remedies to this problem include the retrofitting of shrouds, enclosures, local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems and water suppression systems. The single or combined application of these systems must be optimised to ensure they operate efficiently. It is desirable that the future design planning of such facilities include integrated dust suppression and/or removal systems to ensure material delivery rates are maintained and the welfare of the workforce is protected. The characteristic release of dust and the disturbance to the surrounding ventilation airflow is investigated by the construction and solution of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models validated by data obtained from scale experiments. A 3D computational model was constructed using the FluentTM CFD software to represent the background ventilation regime within an underground crushing installation. The falling ore is represented as a continuum granular fluid falling under gravity from the raised bed of the dump truck. Transient path lines are computed to simulate the updraft airflow generated by the tipping process and indicate the dispersion path of any entrained dust. The relationships between the falling ore material, the displaced air and the shear induced flow are determined by an analysis of the computed volume/mass flow rates predicted across the crusher opening. An analysis of the airflow patterns predicted by the CFD simulation models indicates strong shear flows induced between the tipped material and the surrounding airflow in the vicinity of the crusher during tipping, and a strong influence of the background ventilation regime on the path taken by this shear flow. Scale experimental studies were conducted to characterise the induced shear flow and visualise the potential entrainment and transport of dust. An analysis of these experiments is presented.

The ability to simulate the stability of post-mining landscapes over time scales ranging from decades to millennia is a critical element in the assessment of closure designs for uranium mines. Landscape Evolution Modelling (LEM) technologies provide a means to simulate and assess the long-term geomorphic stability of a conceptual rehabilitated landform for periods of thousands of years. However, a major issue with simulations derived from long-term modelling are the limitations associated with the data inputs. Specifically, simulations which utilise historic rainfall data only represent the variability of rainfall events that have occurred over a relatively short period. Consequently, these simulations run the risk of not accounting for the full range of rainfall variability that might be expected over an extended period of up to 10 000 years. Therefore, for this study a probabilistic approach was adopted to generate a stochastic synthetic rainfall data set to produce a series of unique rainfall scenarios, each representing a simulated period of 100 years. Importantly, utilising such an approach allows uncertainty in predictions to be better accounted for and provides a range or probability of likely outcomes.In this study, the effect of ten individual rainfall scenarios are assessed in terms of their impact on the predicted erosion and denudations rates produced by the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM for a conceptual rehabilitated landform of the Ranger Uranium Mine (RUM) in the Northern Territory of Australia, focusing on the Corridor Creek catchment (Figure 1). While legislation requires this site to be erosionally stable for at least 10 000 years (Commonwealth of Australia, 1987), here the focus is on the first one hundred years of landscape evolution, as this is the period in which erosion is expected to be higher, with limited vegetation cover or pedogenic development in the initial decades after rehabilitation. To obtain the rock type-I crack propagation process accurately, a novel fixture is used to make the prefabricated crack of rock propagation along the predetermined direction. In this study, the crack propagation process of rock is monitored with the digital image correlation method (DICM), and a mechanical model of crack directional propagation was established. The results show that the simple crack directional propagation device can effectively realise the stable propagation of type-I crack along the predetermined direction, the crack initiation angle is less than 10°, and the deviation between the peak strength of crack propagation calculated by a simplified mechanical model and the tensile strength of Brazilian splitting is 22.76 per cent and 7.53 per cent, respectively. According to the deformation field evolution law, crack propagation can be divided into three stages: microcrack development, main crack propagation, and main crack propagation. As for the rock type-I crack initiation and propagation mechanism, before reaching the peak strength, the prefabricated crack tip is subjected to maximum tensile stress; the elastic energy increases rapidly, and the dissipation energy increases slowly; after the peak strength, elastic energy exceeds its energy storage limit and released rapidly, and most of the input energy is converted into dissipation energy, which makes the crack propagation rapidly. The crack directional propagation device will be further optimised and improved, and it is expected to provide a new method for the study of crack propagation mechanism, rock failure precursor information and crack arrest principle, etc. It will also provide theoretical references for the optimisation of coal strata directional blasting, fracturing, fracture arrest, and other related technologies in geotechnical engineering.

Grinding circuits are used in most mineral processing plants. Their widespread application makes the efficient running of the circuits essential to almost all resource projects. This paper will show that, with the application of modern multivariable control techniques, improved plant performance can be obtained when compared with conventional single loop control strategies. Results are presented for a simulated closed-circuit ball mill.The grinding circuit was controlled using the rod-mill water and primary and secondary sump dilution flowrates as the manipulated variables. Variables controlled were the primary cyclone feed flowrate, the primary cyclone feed density and the particle-size measurement (percentage smaller than 75 um).

The Dinkidi Cu-Au porphyry deposit is situated in the Caraballo Range of North Luzon, Philippines. Although comparatively small, Dinkidi has unusually high gold grades with drilling by Climax-Arimco Mining Corporation delineating a 110 Mt orebody at 1.2 g/t gold and 0.5 per cent copper. The magmatic-hydrothermal evolution of Dinkidi records a distinctive switch in mineralisation from an early orthoclase-dominated Au-rich assemblage, typical of alkaline porphyry systems, to a later quartz stockwork Au-Cu rich assemblage typical of most calc-alkaline to shoshonitic porphyry systems. The early orthoclase-dominated stage is associated with the intrusion and crystallisation of a variably-textured clinopyroxene-syenite dyke that contains high-grade (5 - 20 g/t) gold mineralisation. We consider this dyke to be a Cu-Au porphyry analogue to the pegmatites found in granitic systems. Dinkidi is hosted within the Early Miocene Didipio Igneous Complex. This alkaline igneous complex is comprised of early unmineralised gabbros (pyroxene-plagioclase cumulates), clinopyroxenites (pyroxene cummulates), diorites and monzodiorites that have been intruded by a large, weakly mineralised monzonite pluton. The Dinkidi deposit is located at the southern margin of the monzonite pluton. Mineralisation is hosted within a composite monzonite stock. Within the stock, an 800 metres by ~200 metres (plan section) elongate monzonite stock (Tunja Monzonite) predates and hosts the bulk of the Au-Cu mineralisation. This has been intruded by the thin (10 to 30 m wide), highly mineralised variably-textured magnetite- and clinopyroxene- phyric syenite pegmatite (the Balut Dyke). The youngest phases of the composite stock are leucocratic quartz-monzonite porphyry (Quan Porphyry) that grades texturally, in its core, into a post-mineralisation crystal-crowded quartz-syenite (Bufu Felsite). The late-stage Bufu Felsite is inferred to be the source of much of the Cu-Au mineralisation. The Didipio Igneous Complex has intruded a sequence of Late Oligocene alkaline andesitic lavas and volcaniclastics and overlying potassic dacitic lavas. Whole rock geochemical analyses indicate that the intrusions and the potassic dacite lavas in the surrounding region are co-magmatic. Five main stages of hydrothermal activity are recorded at Dinkidi. An unmineralised K-silicate (biotite-magnetite) alteration assemblage formed during the intrusion of the Tunja Monzonite stock. The diorites surrounding the stock display intense selectively pervasive biotite and magnetite alteration and are cut by an extensive network of orthoclase veins and monzonite dykes. The orthoclase-dominated assemblages of Stage Two carry substantial high-grade Au mineralisation and are associated with the intrusion of the Balut Dyke. The emplacement of this unusual dyke is associated with emplacement of pegmatitic clinopyroxene-orthoclase-magnetite¦sulphide dykes, localised orthoclase flooding along the margins of the dyke, and subsequent emplacement of an extensive orthoclase-actinolite-bornite¦chalcopyrite-fluorite stock-work, and development of widespread selectively pervasive actinolite alteration. The main stage of Au-Cu mineralisation at Dinkidi is intimately associated with the intrusion and initial crystallisation of the leuco-monzonite porphyry (Quan Porphyry) and emplacement of a quartz stockwork followed by carbonate-sulphide deposition and intense vein-related sericite and carbonate alteration assemblages. The quartz stockwork formed synchronous with the deposition of the æBugoy QuartzoliteÆ, a very coarse grained mosaic of quartz-orthoclase-perthite along the walls and top of the crystallising intrusion. Stage 3 was terminated by crystallisation of the distinctively vuggy Bufu quartz-syenite phase in the core of the intrusive, with associated antiperthite veins, and the subsequent explosive brecciation of the roof of the intrusion, forming a quartz-fragment breccia from the Bugoy Quartzolite. Retrograde metasomatism during Stage Four was intimately associated with the emplacement of extensive, late-stage carbonate, silica and zeolite veins and widespread selectively pervasive carbonate alteration. The last hydrothermal stage at Dinkidi, Stage 5, is comprised of strong selectively pervasive clay alteration and is associated with fault-related brecciation of the Dinkidi stock.

The project management and construction plans adopted by Davy McKee for the Cooper Basin Liquids Project resulted in a project notable for the Relatively short duration from initiation of the design through to liquids production. Two locations were involved, one at Moomba in the far northeast of South Australia some 800 km from Adelaide, and the other at Port Bonython some 40 km from Whyalla. Total expenditure by the owners at the two sites was in excess of $600 million. Matters covered include organisation, transport, construction, industrial relations, project services and commissioning.

The results of a geostatistical analysis of geochemical data obtained from field measurements are described in the paper. Q values derived from seismic signal rise times for different travel paths in the rock masses were used in the study. Cross-hole seismic measurements made at surface and underground sites formed the basis for the work. Geostatistical estimation of average l/Q values for area of the rock were compared with geological interpretions of rock type distributions. Reasonable correlations were obtained between the two methods of rock quality estimation.

The earliest caveman, very much a minority group, in the face of great adversity and person- al peril, had to take his livelihood by stealth or force of arms - aided by some degree of reas- on and ingenuity. He was pretty much a law unto himself. As time went on, his type became more numerous; and, after bumping heads with the- tough bloke who lived in the cave across the valley, he decided that perhaps he ought to try to get along with him. Perhaps he could trade some over-ripe emu meat for that `roo skin that he had tried to take. Then too, next time he wants a woman, he had better use a lighter club and just stun her a little - that last one was pretty badly bashed. Perhaps he should keep her around the cave and train her to keep the fire going, gather some roots, and skin the game. Those joeys of hers are kind of cute too. Of course they eat, and it would necessitate bringing in more food. So man gained increasing responsib- ilities to his family and neighbours. He domesticated animals, learned that he could cultivate certain plants that were palat- able and would supplement the meat diet, and found that he could modify earth materials to make tools - he became a grazier, a farmer, a miner and a manufacturer. He ceased to be nom- adic and community life came into being. This complicated life and made more rules essential.

The manganese ore of Groote Eylandt is a shallow sedimentary deposit of Cretaceous age. There are a number of deposits which vary greatly in ore texture, density, percentage of matrix and thickness. The thickness in the present five operating quarries varies from 1-5 metres. The mine output in 1973 was 3 million tonnes of which 60% was blasted, the remainder ripped and bulldozed. The shallow deposit and its varying thickness create rather unique blasting problems which must be overcome in order to produce a minimum overall mining cost but not necessarily resulting in a minimum drilling and blasting cost per tonne. Future planning envisages the introduction of site mixed slurry explosives following test work and the application of a twin boom single operator rotary percussion drill. The paper outlines the overall developments,present and envisaged practices and the reasons for these changes.
