Environmental considerations were key factors in the design of the Ranger Uranium Mines treatment plant. The mine is located adjacent to the Kakadu National Park and has an average rainfall of 1.6m per annum. Initially, no contaminated water or liquid effluents are to be released from the project area and thus water management is a key design and operating fact. Particulate and gas emission criteria influenced design as did occupational hygiene factors (dust, radon, housekeeping, maintenance access). Equipment selection and engineering standards were conservative and resulted in the plant attaining design performance in less than three months from the date of commissioning. A number of mechanical and operational problems were experienced and are discussed in the paper, however none of these problems have had a significant effect on production.

This paper describes several sources of external dilution affecting the stope walls during underground sub-level and bench stoping. Factors which control ground behaviour such as the geometry of the openings, the influence of geological discontinuities, stress re-distribution and blasting practices are discussed. Crown stope instability due to stress concentrations induced by changes in the excavation geometry, is discussed and the most efficient ways to sequence blasting within a stope are analysed. Effects of undercutting by blasting, blast damage in the near field and cut-off slot blast designs are analysed. The influence of dynamic loading on the exposed walls as well as the practice of blasting fill passes within stope crowns are discussed.

PT Newmont Minahasa Raya (PT NMR) is an Indonesian joint venture subsidiary of the Newmont Gold Company of Denver, Colorado, USA. PT Newmont Minahasa Raya operates a 700 000 tonne per annum gold plant in the Minahasa region of North Sulawesi, Indonesia. At full capacity the plant is expected to produce an average of 150 000 to 180 000 ounces of gold per year until the year 2007 based on current existing reserves.Exploration began in 1986 and high grade mineralisation was discovered in 1988. Subsequent drilling defined a resource of approximately 2000 000' ounces. Reserves as of 1 January 1997 were 7 035 000 tonnes grading 8.46 grams per tonne, for 1 913 000 contained ounces. Metallurgical testwork commenced in 1991. Construction of the plant started in late-1994 and the first gold was poured in March 1996.

The purpose of this paper is to therefore investigate the hydrogeological characteristics of tailings, coarse and mixed rejects from coal processing to enable better understanding of the potential for undrained behaviours in coal mine spoil piles. This is achieved by analysing the results from permeability and oedometer testing of tailings, coarse rejects and mixtures thereof. Focus is given to the effect that tailings content has on the behaviour of mixed rejects, the transition point between drained and undrained material behaviours, and the evolution of properties with increasing stress that would occur with increased depth of burial in a mine spoil pile. The implications of the findings are discussed with respect to spoil pile stability.

The following is based on two examples of emission control with coal fired power stations as practised in Germany at Heilbronn Block 7 power station and the Rheinbraun coal combined power station with integrated high-temperature Winkler system (HTW). Heilbronn Block 7 demonstrates the successful emission control of sulphur and nitrogen oxides and the (HTW) system the reduction of the specific carbon dioxide emission. Both were sparked off by legislation which demanded certain emission control standards. Since the early eighties environment protection has been a matter of heated public debate in the European Community. A recent survey in Germany showed unemployment as being the only subject matter more frequently in the minds of people than environment protection. A new kind of forest devastation in areas away from industry has caused investigations by several government departments and private enterprise. Because of lack of conclusive evidence so far, the principle of PRECAUTION has replaced the CONCLUSIVE evidence as a base for new legislation concerning the environment. The new legislative standards for nitrogen oxide emissions in Germany for example have reduced NOx emissions of power stations from 1000 mg NOx per cubic metre of flue gas in the beginning of 1983 to 200 mg NOx per cubic metre of flue gas in April 1984. These new standards were enshrined in legislation when research provided some evidence linking nitrogen oxide emissions through photo-chemical reactions with forest devastation. Thirty European countries signed a treaty in 1983 expressing their concern about air pollution and their willingness to co-operate with each other in controlling large scale emissions.

Lungfish and crayfish inhabit continental ecosystems similar to those of their ancient counterparts in the Permian (lungfish) and Triassic (crayfish) Periods, exhibiting similar burrowing behaviors to live, breed, and escape desiccation. Identification of their burrows in the geologic record when body fossils are absent has relied on the overall gross morphology of the burrows and the process of elimination. A method of burrow identification has been developed by evaluating burrow structures in an attempt to designate architectural and surficial burrow morphologies that uniquely reflect the distinctive burrowing mechanism of a particular organism. The information from this method defines the burrowing signatures of an organism, enabling the differentiation of their burrows even when fossil evidence is lacking.The lungfish constructed simple, vertical burrows with bulbous terminations. The burrow walls exhibit fine, horizontal to sub-horizontal striae and vertical to sub-vertical striae near the top of the bulbous terminus, reflecting a burrowing style similar to modern burrowing lungfish. The crayfish constructed simple, vertical burrows to complex burrows with multiple branching and chamber development. The burrow surface ornamentations exhibit horizontal to sub-horizontal ridges, vertical to sub-vertical groupings of scratches, mud- and lag-liners, knobby and hummocky textures, and body impressions, which reflect the burrowing mechanism of the crayfish.

The phosphatic overburden of Christmas Island is a lateritic soil and consists dominantly of crandallite and millisite. These minerals are polymorphs of general formula, (Na,K)x Ca2-x (Al, Fe)6 (PO4)4 (OH)10-x (2+x) H2O. Iron occurs only in millisite. Both minerals exhibit similar thermal transformations, dehydroxylating near 600¦C and recrystallizing above 800¦C. Dehydroxylation results in crystal structure collapse but retention of crystal morphology. Ggethite, boehmite and apatite are minor constituents of some-of the phosphatic Soils.

In recent years there has been a trend among mining companies to diversify exploration and development away from the countries that have dominated mining activity for the latter half of this century. With some exceptions, this trend is accelerating and is a function of the recognition that many parts of the world, with no previous exposure to modern exploration, are endowed with considerable mineral potential. In addition coincident with changing political and economic circumstances, many countries have recognised the benefits of attracting international mining investment and have radically changed policies, fiscal and legal regimes so as to encourage exploration and mining. Some countries, however, have not readily accepted mining for cultural or social reasons and have yet to make effective changes to mining legislation. For historical reasons, other countries may have little or no direct experience of western economics, nor may they fully recognise the need for stability and competitive fiscal and legal systems to attract foreign investment. Not all ventures in new countries have been commercial successes and there have been some lamentable and recent lapses from grace. In the upper coal surface in the Latrobe Valley, craters known locally as fireholes have developed due to prehistoric coal fires. They can be several hundred metres across and up to fifty metres deep, and are now filled with overburden materials varying from hard baked clays to very soft lacustrine clays. In addition to reducing coal reserves, continuous mining operations are seriously affected by fireholes. Large undulations in the upper coal surface result in a mixture of coal and overburden on the upper mining levels. The very soft lacustrine clays are unstable in the mine batters and the overburden dump, are difficult to handle on the bucket wheel excavator/conveyer system, and have insufficient bearing capacity for the large bucket wheel excavators. Early identification is essen- tial and both drilling and dynamic core penetrometer have been exten- sively used. However, this has not proved adequate in locating and defining the extent of all fireholes, due largely to their irregular shape. To overcome this a range of geophysical techniques has been trialled with very promising results. A trial area has been covered on a twenty metre grid using gravity and Geonics EM34 conductivity measurements and the same area has been covered at a closer spacing with high resolution magnetics. Image processing of contoured magnetic, EM34 conductivity and residual gravity data has resulted in very good correlation with drilling data.

External and internal challenges in mining are increasing the difficulty and complexity of operating mines. The external mining environment has a big impact on mining operations and is driving the focus on safety, sustainable mining, green issues, profitability and productivity. There is a very high emphasis on ‘reducing cost to improve’, lower mining and beneficiation costs by eliminating waste/inefficiencies (reduce people, use less consumables, multiskilling, etc). The internal mining environment is getting tougher to operate in, with the deposits being more difficult to mine, more difficult to manage due to external pressure along with issues associated with maintaining quality, etc.Technological and environmental developments too numerous to mention, mean that cost control models, reduction in human resource numbers, as well as other drastic measures to curtail expenditure and increase profitability have become part of everyday business. The capability to manage the mining environment in a systemic manner has been lacking and this increases the pressure for performance on those individuals operating and managing mines.Working smarter has become crucial to ensure that businesses optimise the use of their resources, become more safety conscious, more productive and remain cost-effective, while recognising the importance of sustainable mining now and in the future. The logic of determining and managing to the capability of the mining value chain will be examined and the underlying assumptions or beliefs guiding behaviour and decision-making will be highlighted.In order to identify the obstacles in the mining value chain that hinder achievement of its full potential, the following questions have to be asked:What are the factors that influence the performance of a mining value chain?What is the design capacity of the mine?How can the inherent flow and value capacity of a mine be determined?What types of solutions will allow a mine to operate at its inherent flow and value capacity?This article will discuss the way we plan, measure, assess and manage the mine value chain, by addressing the following factors:balanced capacity versus flow and value capacity designthe use of averagingoptimising individual components in a value chain versus optimising the whole value chain.Optimising flow and value through the mining value chain is one of the three pillars of Mineral Resource Throughput Management (MR™). With a view to characterising activated carbons with respect to their ability to adsorb gold from cyanide solutions, an attempt was made to establish correlations between the equilibrium capacity constant of the activated carbon for gold (k value) and five other parameters. These parameters were percentage ash content, iodine number, methylene blue value, surface area, and pH respectively. Twenty four different proprietary brand activated carbon products were examined, the correlations being established by means of linear regression analysis. It was shown that a significant correlation only existed between k and pH value. This was interpreted in terms of the presence of oxide complexes on the activated carbon surface. Further test specifications as developed at the Anglo American Research Laboratories are also outlined with a view to the selection of activated carbons suitable for use in' a carbon-in-pulp operation. Methods for assessing both the capacity and the kinetic response of carbons for gold adsorption are presented, while the measurement of attrition resistance, particle size distribution and moisture and solubles content is also outlined. The measurement of the capacity constant for gold adsorption together with attrition resistance are considered to be necessary in the initial selection of a suitable carbon.

The management of wear surfaces in mining operations has remained largely unchanged since the inception of mining. Sacrificial wear liners are installed on the inside of chutes, hoppers and other equipment used to transfer bulk ore to protect the asset from abrasive wear caused by the flow of material. These liners are generally replaced at fixed intervals which may be determined based on historical wear rates or may be driven by other maintenance requirements for that asset. This approach does not always yield satisfactory results, especially for critical assets where the impact of downtime on production can be substantial. For such assets, a condition-based maintenance strategy has the potential to significantly increase productivity and reduce the total cost of ownership associated with the asset. However, for such a strategy to be successful, timely information on the actual condition (remaining thickness) of the wear liners is essential. This paper describes the development and implementation of a wear monitoring system that can be used to remotely and continuously report on remaining liner material thickness in real time. It details some of the challenges that were overcome when developing the system, including the design of a patented thickness measuring system that can be used in a variety of liner materials and is tolerant to the presence of ore on the wear surface. The paper also explains how a cloud-based approach enables data from the wear sensors to be integrated into external systems such as a data historian, which has been demonstrated through a collaborative project with one of the largest iron ore producers in the Pilbara. This ability to combine real time liner thickness information with other data sources, such as throughput, provides the foundation for the transition to a condition-based maintenance strategy.

To substantially reduce, if not eliminate, carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from ironmaking it is necessary to convert from blast furnace (BF) ironmaking using coking coal as the reductant to direct reduction (DR) ironmaking using hydrogen (H₂) and green electricity. Currently, almost all natural gas (NG) based direct reduced iron (DRI) production utilises iron oxide pellets in shaft furnaces, as opposed to fines in fluidised beds. Also, these pellets are ordinarily produced from high-grade magnetite concentrate, rather than hematite and goethite with typically higher gangue contents. The use of high-grade magnetite concentrate is driven by the preference to melt DRI in conventional electric arc furnaces (EAFs), thereby avoiding the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) for making crude steel (CS). However, in replacing BF with DR ironmaking it is not economically feasible to source enough high-grade magnetite to replace the lower grade hematite and goethite currently consumed. That is not to say that hematite and goethite, or even low-grade magnetite, cannot be used in DR ironmaking. However, their higher gangue content, resulting in higher slag production, requires that the EAF producing CS be replaced with a submerged arc furnace (SAF) that will produce pig iron (PI) for the BOF as does the BF. Here, critical issues to be addressed are, what are the technicalities in replacing high-grade magnetite concentrate with hematite and goethite and NG with H₂ in DRI pellet production and melting? This paper summarises certain relevant published information on DRI pellet research, test work and production together with relevant information on Pilbara ores. It attempts to illustrate the inter- relationship of composition and processing conditions on DRI pellet properties. It is intended to serve as a rudimentary guide to understanding the complexities of formulation, testing, evaluation, production and goethite and offer insight into this challenge.

Blasting, particularly bench blasting, uses finite length cylinders of explosive close to two free faces. The rock to be blasted is usually intersected by a complex 3-D system of joints. To fully simulate a blast, a 3-D dynamic model is required. It is shown that the static stress distribution around a long cylinder can be reproduced by superposing the static stress distribution of a suitable chain of spheres. Thus, the dynamic results for individual spheres given by Favreau (1969) can now be substituted for the static results to give a dynamic model of the stress distribution around a long cylinder. Comparison of measured and computed waveforms show that the measured waveforms are much more attenuated and dispersed than expected. The consequences for explosive evaluation and design are Discussed.

The San Vicente stratabound zinc-lead rhythmite deposit, Peru, is hosted in carbonates of the Late Triassic - Early Jurassic Pucara Group. These strata were deposited in a large, shallow water, carbonate platform which extended nearly continuously for 150 kilometers (north-south) in the eastern part of the Pucara basin.The distinctive sulfide-bearing rhythmites occur in three dolomite units which, from bottom to top, include the San Judas horizon with one sulfide-bearing manto; the San Vicente horizon with seven sulfide-bearing mantos including the main ore horizon; and the Alfonso horizon with three sulfide-bearing mantos. The dark gray sulfide-bearing dolostone layers range in thickness from a few millimeters to a few centimeters and contain variable amounts of carbonaceous material, pyrite, quartz, fine-grained sphalerite and galena. They are bordered on each side by selvages of yellow to red-brown coarse-grained sphalerite containing minor amounts of galena. Coarsely crystalline white or gray sparry dolomite is found between the coarse-grained sphalerite layers. Although commonly stratiform and uniform in thickness, the dark layers curve, "pinch out," coalesce, and form "islands" and "peninsulas."Mineral replacement textures, the paragenetic sequence, and presence of sparry dolomite, bitumen, intraformational breccias and isotope data support a hydrothermal replacement origin by metal-bearing solutions that deposited the ore and related minerals in space previously occupied by dolomite and evaporite minerals. The alignment of the Zn -Pb deposits, and at San Vicente the orientation of the mantos, the spatially and temporally associated igneous sills and the tourmaline-bearing sandstone support hydrothermal mineralization driven by a magmatic heat source in a tensional regime.

A model based on non-steady state has been developed for dissolution and diffusion in porous ore particles. Results from the particular model have been incorporated, as a rate term, into a global, heap-scale model based on a plug flow reactor at unsteady state. The global model can be used to consider leaching by aqueous-phase reagents in equilibrium with a gas- phase component, such as oxygen gas, as well as strictly aqueous-phase reagents, such as cyanide. The flexibility of the model even allows predic- tion of the outcomes of using reagent sideflow injection in large heaps. Data from column leaching tests are compared to the model, and their relationship is discussed.

Conveyor belt haulage offers the advan tages of continuity of operation, minimum labour requirements, and the ability to handle large volumes of material over extended periods. However, breakdown of critical con- veyors in the system can cause undue and substantial losses in production output at the working faces, unless adequate surge bin capacity is incorporated in the haulage system. A conveyor belt simulation programme, code name 'Beltsim' was developed by Bucklen et al (1968) at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in the U.S.A. and provides a quantitative measure of the performance of a conveyor belt network design. A limitation still exists with the computer programme and involves the inability of the programme to predict the necessary surge bin capacity to overcome conveyor belt downtime. The computer programme was modified to overcome this limitation, to simulate a con- veyor belt breakdown, and to provide a quantitative prediction of the surge bin capacity necessary to permit a modern mining system to operate effectively and continuously.

As shallow coal reserves with easier mining conditions are exhausted, future deep coal mining with difficult mining conditions may face significant economic, technical and environmental challenges. Moreover, due to increased coal production capacity with the new generation longwall systems, predicting adverse mining conditions has become more important than ever before. The potential impact of these difficult conditions is an increase in mining risks and costs. Reliable prediction of rock mass deformation, mine stability and mine water inflow is not only essential for improving mine safety and reduction of coal production costs, but it is also important for the assessment and management of the environmental impact of mining. This paper briefly describes an integrated approach to mine groundwater simulation and prediction. Central to this integrated approach is a three-dimensional computer code called COSFLOW, developed by CSIRO of Australia in collaboration with NEDO and JCOAL of Japan to address the pressing issues of mine water management. COSFLOW incorporates unique features that make it ideal for the simulation of coal mining and examining the interaction between rock fracture, aquifer interference and water flow. This paper also presents an example of an application of the integrated approach and COSFLOW in water inflow prediction at Springvale Mine in New South Wales.

This paper covers the key issues such as orebody geometry and grade, geotechnical data and metallurgical response. These must be considered in selecting a mining system for a new orebody. It then focusses on the advantages of open pit mining over underground mining particularly in the areas of costs, speed of development and safety. Environmental issues with waste storage is the only negative which emerges. Consequently, the majority of new large mine developments continue to be open pits. It is also demonstrated that underground mining continues to play an important role, particulary for high-grade deposits at depth. The impact on ore recoveries of recent developments in stabilised fill technology in underground mining is also highlighted. The importance of economics to the decision on mining method is continually emphasised as maximising orebody value should be the prime objective of this Work.

The management of waste from mining operations is a significant aspect of bringing a mineral commodity to final market. The ore beneficiation process and transport/disposal of waste involves significant consumption of costly resources. A number of options exist to dispose of mill waste on surface and as a backfill material. These range in complexity, risk, capital cost, operating cost and ultimately business performance. This paper discusses the value delivered to a business in using dewatering systems including paste as opposed to conventional slurry tailings disposals. This is illustrated through various case studies and serves to demonstrate how paste can add value and reduce risk to a successful business.
