The process of evaluating orebodies at the feasibility study stage is extremely important. In recent times many groups have indicated that they would like ore reserve estimation to be numeric and objective. Whilst sampling, geological, mining and mathematical principles may be used to analyse the data, all ore reserve methods require the use of experience factors and as such are value j ddgment statements.

The problem of instantaneous outbursts remains unsolved after over a century of events and the investigation of the mechanism of the phenomenon and means of treating it. Outbursts have occurred of up to 5,000 tonnes with perhaps up to 500,000 m3 of accompanying gas, either methane (CH4) or carbon dioxide (C02) or mixtures. The low density of CH4 and the high density of CO2 give particular problems. Australia with both gases has experienced outbursts for 85 years with fatalities as recent as 1978. The Bulli Seam of the Illawarra area of the Sydney Basin is affected and outbursts with both CH4 and CO2 occur. The Northern and Central Bowen Basin also experiences outbursts with both gases. Proneness of affected mines is related to the high rank of the'coal and the proneness of the seams-is localised according to depth, gassiness, structure and development geometry. Proneness may be reduced by appropriate choice of mining methods. In addition to outbursting mines other mines have symptomatic phenomena. Traditional preventive methods have been used and control by induce- ment has been practised. It is no longer adequate in running mines and quarries to simply select the best equipment. Today's competitive international commodity markets demand superior efficiency. This requires efficient production and commercial processes together with systematic involvement of people in continuous improvement of processes. True Total Quality of Management (True TQM) principles provide an operating philosophy for maximising productivity and minimising unit costs of output. Unfortunately, even though these principles are proven in all industry sectors worldwide, they have not always been used correctly. This paper describes basic methodology for correct use of these principles to successfully improve the productivity of rock breakage production processes.

In an environment of lower zinc prices, falling revenues and reducing zinc feed grades, Century mine implemented a fast-tracked capital upgrade program in less than 15 months. The program was designed to increase ore milling throughput capacity by 20 per cent and optimise the capacity of the flotation plant to increase zinc recovery by approximately 2.5 per cent whilst maintaining final zinc concentrate grade.A key aspect of this program was minimising capital expenditure by better utilising existing capacity and only adding capacity where absolutely required to address critical processing bottlenecks. By gaining an understanding of plant process bottlenecks and future ore blends, and by carefully selecting appropriate technologies for particular specific flotation applications, maximum return on minimal capital investment was achieved.The close collaborative work achieved between the metallurgy processing department and other operational departments on-site was also critical to the success of this project. This work increased the mining and processing capacity of the mine and port site respectively, such that the full value of the process plant modification could be achieved.Capital payback on this investment was achieved in approximately three and a half months.This case study demonstrates the extra value to a mining business that can be achieved through fully understanding the mining/processing value chain and by careful targeted action to address critical bottlenecks in the processing chain from the mine through to the port site.CITATION:Akroyd, T J, Wynn, R and Costa, C, 2014. At Cominco's Zinc Refinery at Trail, British Columbia impurities are removed from zinc sulphate electrolyte by a two-stage purification process using zinc dust. Copper, cadmium and thallium are removed in the first stage whereas cobalt is removed in the second stage. Cobalt removal kinetics are affected by soluble antimony and copper additions to the electrolyte. This study was focused on the kinetics of cobalt removal by zinc powder cementation. Experimental variables included copper and antimony concentrations, pH and temperature. Common organic additives employed in zinc plants were studied to determine potential interactions with the cobalt removal process. Cementation products obtained from laboratory experiments and plant practice were studied using SEM. A number of significant results were obtained: 1. Copper and antimony ions were sustantially removed from solution during the early stages of the cementation reaction (within the first 15 minutes). Cobalt cementation kinetics are slow and follow a first order kinetic regime. 2. A drop in the cobalt removal rates can be correlated with a rise in the Eh of the slurry. 3. Ligninsulphonate, Percol 351 and animal glue at levels of 2 mg/L significantly impede cobalt cementation.

In mining and remote areas of resource industry, there has been a development towards lacking emergency medical first aid response, that creates a potential disadvantage for patients after work accidents and other medical emergencies compared to standard population. This raises the question how a professional emergency medical coverage can be provided underground, taking into account lacking medical professionals in small resource companies combined with long rescue times. Aiming on the closure of this gap, a team of the mine rescue brigade from the Research and Training Mine Reiche Zeche (Forschungs-und Lehrbergwerk (FLB) Reiche Zeche) of the TUBAF Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg in Freiberg/Germany and its cooperating emergency departments of the Freiberg District Hospital and the Zeisigwaldkliniken Bethanien Chemnitz developed a totally new rescue concept using elements from tactical medicine and advanced emergency medicine combined with a specifically designed compact equipment and a highly standardised teaching curriculum. A fully new standardised and condensed tactical medical approach was developed including specifically adjusted equipment, and was taught in a didactically optimised way within 16 lessons in two days. Objective Structured Practical Examinations (OSPE) using manikins and simulated patients were conducted and compared to the identical exam of the reference group, which consisted of advanced paramedics. The standardised tactical medical scheme includes vital functions and body checks, advanced life support, nasal and intraosseous drug application, supraglottic airway management, artificial ventilation, thoracocentesis, bleeding control including tourniquet, fracture repositioning and splinting, transport bedding and thermal preservation. The developed Tactical Medical Mining Rescue (TMR) concept was subsequently included in the German guidelines for mine rescue services in 2022 and is already implemented in many companies in Germany and several international projects.

Hydro-economics is a field of research that analyses water resources from a multi-disciplinary approach (Harou et al., 2009). These models generally include one component that describes the water resources of the catchment being analysed (e.g. the physical behaviour of water), an economic component that describes users’ water demand function (changes of willingness to pay relative to availability) and a coupling methodology. These models go beyond calculating cash flows for water investments and analyse the economic behaviour of users when facing water shortages or surplus. In other words, water demand curves are defined for each water user (e.g. urban, agriculture, mining, environmental and hydropower), and they are used to retrofit the water resources component. As a result, the model approximates the catchment scale response to droughts and wet periods, including the effects of water markets, restrictions, recycling, water sharing and any cooperative efforts by users to adjust to changing climate conditions.These models are usually focused on agriculture and urban users, the main water consumers in most catchments, but they have sometimes included environmental, industrial and hydropower users (Bekchanov, Sood, & Jeuland, 2015). Nevertheless, although a relevant user of water in several catchments, the mining industry has been rarely included. This paper is part of an ongoing project that addresses this gap by developing a hydro-economic model in the upper section of the Aconcagua River in Chile. The throughput of a HP-roller mill is determined by the acceleration of the feed material within acceleration zone and introduction into the compression zone. Both processes depend on the internal friction and the friction of the material on the roller surface which is influenced by the surface structure and adhering of material. The particle motion in the acceleration zone has been investigated with high speed videos showing the effect of the centrifugal force and the slip on the roller surface. The throughput is discussed in the term of the specific throughput which can be approximated by a linear function characterised by the throughput number and the throughput elasticity. The throughput number is a helpful measure for investigating the influence of the feed material and the surface structure. The experimental results give some guidance for chosing an optimum corrugation profile.

There are several technologies available for thickening and dewatering of mining process slurries. The most commonly used are thickeners and filters, but technological developments have made solid bowl decanter centrifuges a viable option and their use, as a modern and alternative technology, is being considered more and more. In terms of tailings, the main goal for all mine operations is to minimize operating costs and the environmental impact of the disposed material. The high potential risk of wet tailings storage in tailings dams is causing this technology to become unpopular, and there is a strong drive in many parts of the world, by governments, communities and environmental agencies to limit any further construction and use of such facilities. For the alternative disposal method of dry disposal of tailings, two aspects of the process have to be evaluated, namely the maximum dryness of the separated solids and the maximum liquid recovery. For most mining operations dry disposal is a new concept. Presenting these companies with examples of operations where this processing option has been successfully applied and proven, will help them to adapt to the changing requirements in the future. Focus has been placed on adapting decanter centrifuges to the mining environment. Modern decanters stand out in terms of their small footprint, low water demand, high availability and their high degree of automation, combined with the excellent cost / performance ratio. Decanter centrifuges have started to play a key role in applications such as tailing dewatering, drilling and tunnelling muds processing, hydrometallurgical processes of gold, nickel or zinc and separating crud in solvent extraction plants. This paper will present advantages of decanter centrifuges compared to the traditional technology and corroborate these advantages by case studies.

Degussa's PAL-system (peroxide assisted leach) has been proven to be more economical than the conventional cyanidation technique. Significant in- creases in the gold recovery have been reported, accompanied by savings in cyanide. Accelerated extraction kinetics and modified reagent demands necessitate a redesign of the conventional cyanidation plant. The South African Osprey Mine is presented as an example of a successful PAL-application. Based on the plant and laboratory data it is shown that the redesign of the flowsheet can be an important factor for the effectiveness of a metallurgical plant. In the case of the Osprey Mine, the PAL-technology all ows a modification of the current preoxidation-ClPcircuit to two separate CIL-plants to treat run-of-mine ore and old tailings dumps. A doubling of the throughput is possible without enlargement of the plant. This innovation in the field of gold extraction, the combination of the PAL-process with a redesign of the metallurgical plant, can be considered as a basis for a more profitable gold mine.

The Paddington I and proposed Paddington II Pits are both located in what is, by Eastern Goldfields standards, a large tonnage-low grade orebody. The Pits have been designed to supply ore to a substantial Treatment Plant at the designed rate of 875,000 tpa. (This throughput is currently being increased to 1,200,000 tpa).Generally the orebody lends itself to large tonnage mining techniques, relying on only a relatively small amount of sampling. The surface enrichment zone and depleted zone are reasonably complex and require more intensive grade control and sampling techniques as typically utilised in many surface mines in the Eastern Goldfields, although as experience and understanding of the nature of the orebody was gained, less sampling became necessary.

It looks into the rock mechanic aspects, especially the high stress levels that will occur, and the hazard of rockbursts. This review paper presents an integrated and practical insight to blasting geology and its importance. This approach involves developing blasting objective up front and implementing geology specific blast designs. The author refers to this approach as ‘starting at both ends’. There are many human-imposed controls on blasting operations, such as: safety, security, legislative, company standards, heritage, and environmental constraints. Thus it is possible for some operators to lose sight of the controls imposed by nature. This paper demonstrates how site geology controls or influences many aspects of the rock breaking processes and how a focus on this aspect has potential to add considerable value to mining operations. It is obvious that mining companies concentrate their efforts on economic/ore geology (good rock geology). However it is the author’s experience that they also concentrate on engineering geology (bad rock geology) only when forced to do so by the ground conditions, but seem to run out of puff before they apply blasting geology (big rock geology). This paper contains five main sections. In the first section, the impact of geological controls on blasthole drilling is briefly discussed in terms of drill selection, penetration rates, bit wear, blasthole stability, blasthole deviation, and health precautions. In the second section the geological controls on aspects of geometric design are reviewed. These include: hazardous minerals, valuable minerals, selection of the blasting techniques, geological structures, blasting direction, and blasting geometry. Section three overlaps with the geometric design section and deals with aspects related to explosives. Topics addressed include selecting the explosive type based on geology, distribution of explosive charge in space and time, explosive performance, and the rock response to explosive loading. In the fourth section, examples are given of the operational complexity needed to implement a blast to cater for difficult bench geologies, environment constraints, past mining (voids) and need for a high degree of quality control. Section five demonstrates geological controls on blast results. Blasting results include the muck pile characteristics, downstream handling and processing, damage to the remaining rock, and blasting emissions.

This has facilitated the economic optimisation of the resource. Optimisation has been achieved by the timely collection and presentation of data and the use of these data to reduce costs and improve planning procedures.In particular the following issues have been addressed:ò the reduction of the impact of the mining activity on the adjacent urban population centre,ò implementation of safety procedures for mining through underground voids,ò the determination of the optimum bench height and mining method for ore production benches and blast design. This system is fundamentally based on maintaining a high degree of selectivity while achieving a balance of relatively low unit operating costs,ò assessment of the comparable benefits of contractor versus owner operated earth moving equipment, andò the development of effective ore body models, production reconciliation and the long term mine planning procedures to facilitate effective strategic planning.

Sophisticated control systems require sufficient and reliable information from the process to be controlled. At the Pyhasalmi concentrator two novel measurements, a particle size indicator (PSI) and a mill level monitor (MLM), have led to significant progress in the control of the grinding circuit. The PSI and the MLM measurements have brought additional information from the process. The PSI has been an absolute prerequisite for determining the overall grinding circuit efficiency and the design of the integrated grinding and flotation control system. The MLM measurement has enabled studies on the volumetric filling of a mill to be utilised for maximising the mill throughput. The paper describes the operation principles of the PSI and MLM devices and the additional process information received. The results of a metallurgical pre-control audit are discussed and finally the design of the integrated control system is outlined.

Recent and on-going studies on the leaching of gold, the properties and activity of carbon, developments in the elution of gold from carbon, and methods of recovering gold from solution are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on Australian contributions, and their impact on gold metallurgy. Consideration is given to the future development of selective solvent extractants, ion exchange resins or alternative reagents for cyanide.

The dielectric properties of practically all oxide and sulphide ore minerals are such that they heat rapidly when irradiated with microwaves particularly at the standard frequency of 2450 MHz. The presence of carbon or low rank coal mixed with the minerals still further enhances the heating rate. Amongst the patented technologies being investigated are: (i) the direct reduction of oxides with or without carbon included in the pellets or briquettes; (ii) microwave precursor heating of composites ahead of smelt reduction; (iii) microwave smelting of ore or concentrate mixtures with carbon, sometimes assisted with oxygen. Microwaves appear to stimulate endothermic reduction reactions as readily as they do exothermic oxidation reactions. Being a method of achieving "bulk" heating, composites or columns of ore-char blends rapidly heat throughout rather than from the outside inwards as in conventional heating. The microwaves of themselves do not generate any gas - the only gases to be cleaned are the products of reaction in the composites or blends, plus the products of oxygen smelting. In the case of sulphide composites, depending on the quantity and type of low rank coal or char present, sulphur may be eliminated, and collected, in the elemental form. Furthermore, reactions seem to take place at lower temperatures than in conventional smelting but no doubt at the "points" where actual reactions are taking place the atomic or molecular vibrations are such as to satisfy the laws of thermodynamics. Examples are given of the production of unusual products of smelting sulphide concentrates and also the alloys produced from refractory minerals such as chromite and ilmenite. The techniques have been used to produce products with as wide a range of melting points as relatively pure tin and tungsten-molybdenum alloys. Special equipment is being designed and evaluated for these new fields of pyrometallurgy.

lbis new concept in geology is introduced by a reinteipretation of the Archaean stratigraphy of the greenstone belts of the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia. Evidence is presented to show that the recorded Archaean succession of the Eastern Goldfields Province is composed of two distinct groups of mafic/ultrarnafic and felsic igneous rocks which, together with sediments, form alternating sequences represented by Cycles 1 to 4; Cycle 5 consists entirely of sediments. Recorded stratigraphy for the Murchison and corre1atives of the Southern Cross Subprovinces conform to this pattern. The five basic components are referred to as Unit 1 to Unit 5. A major erosional unconformity between Units 3 and 4 extending across the Craton is identified as a locus of potential major gold occurrence, including fossil placers, where suitable structural situations exist; Units 1 and 3 are identified as potential hosts of gold and nickel deposits; Units 2 and 4 for gold and base metals.

The zeta potential on the surface of activated orit carbon were estimated in lhe presence of selected cations and anions that are normally associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area of Western Australia. Additions of such ions to solution of varying pH shifted the isoelectric point of carbon from pH 4.45 to pH 7-8.3, while the anions moved Lhc isoelectric point 10 less than pH 3.2. In the presence of gold cyanide SoluLion additions of spectator ions indicated the isoelecLric poilll to be aL pH less than 3.2; the only exception was for Fe" ion where the isoelecLric point was at pH 5.9. The decrease in zeta potential appeared to be related to the counter-ions present. The decrease may also be related to the adsorption of hydroxyl ion complexes that are likely to be formed when cations are present in the solutions.Gold adsorpLion by activated orit carbon from gold cyanide solution seem to be indicated by the magnitude of zeta potential on the carbon surface. An attempt is made to relate gold adsorption and zeta potential on carbon surface with the pH of the medium.
