Professional engineers of today require a wide array of experience and knowledge. It is true that commonly engineering degrees do teach the technical requirements well, but do fall short in the way of teaching other non-technical issues of professionalism to the student. Today calls for an engineer who does not only have a high standard of the technical knowledge required for their degree, but also has a broad range of experience in areas that are becoming increasingly important in engineering. The importance of social responsibility, liability and interpersonal relations is high. Through the face of the changing world, it has become clear that there is a need for a new type of engineer, who has a broad range of expertise, as well as the typical technical abilities required. This paper will outline these non-technical issues and propose ways of combining these ideas into the mainstream engineering degree.

The smelter building at Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex, Iran, houses two reverberatory furnaces and five Pierce-Smith converters. Under normal operating conditions SO2 emissions fill the building, posing a major health problem for all workers in the building, and reducing their ability to maintain the plant. The converter fume extraction system was analysed using plant measurements, engineering modelling of the entire system and CFD modelling of the extraction hoods. By applying fundamental engineering concepts, a user-interactive computer program was developed that enabled plant engineers and operators to gain a detailed understanding of the system. In conjunction with plant measurements, the model quantified the amount of inleakage throughout the system, identifying it as a significant contributor to the poor extraction performance. Furthermore, it enabled investigation of the effects of hood gates, converters on line, hood dampers, flue insulation, electrostatic precipitator (ESP) operation, and inclusion of an acid plant. The model gave unprecedented insight into the operation of a counterintuitive buoyancy-driven extraction system.

Simultaneous mass-balancing of a mineral processing flow sheet results in adjustments to each data point that reflects the accuracy and precision across the full set of data. In this way, all the good work that goes into designing the sampling and analysis protocol for each sample point is leveraged in order to produce a æbetterÆ set of balanced numbers for every sample point in the circuit. Few operating plants employ whole of circuit balancing techniques to produce reported operating results. This situation is changing with the application of mass balancing technology which utilises redundant data for production accounting and metal reconciliation from product to ore source across multiple phases and multiple time periods. Mine and plant data can now generate credible information to improve productivity. Mine and plant personnel can now use consistent data sets for review and planning. Decisions based on balanced data can be made quicker and with increased confidence.

Pine Creek Goldfields Limited (PCG) is rehabilitating the Enterprise Pit to an aquatic habitat and potential water resource. This paper discusses the development and implementation of that plan. Pine Creek Goldfields Ltd's Enterprise Mine is located approximately 230 km south of Darwin. Open cut mining of the orebody commenced in 1985 and continued for eight years with 14 million m3 of ore and overburden extracted. Geochemical testing of exposed rock types in the pit has demonstrated a propensity to produce acid, and dissolved metals. A plan of management has been developed and implemented to minimise the risk of acid formation and improve the overall water quality in the final void. In developing the plan prime consideration was given to reducing the potential for pit water to impact upon the regional groundwater. An interception system was constructed on Pine Creek to divert approximately 9 km2 of upper catchment into the northern end of the Pit. Construction of the diversion system was completed in December 1993 and a comprehensive surface and groundwater monitoring program initiated. The monitoring program and associated studies are also discussed.

A real-time load-haul-dump (LHD) dispatch optimisation tool has been deployed at Panel Cave 1 and Panel Cave 2 at Newcrest’s Cadia Valley Operations. The tool, known as ORB, is the first known successful implementation of an optimisation-based, autonomous, real-time dispatch tool, custombuilt for underground mining operations. ORB can co-ordinate the optimal dispatch of LHD’s in a block cave to achieve a range of objectives while adhering to draw compliance and geotechnical constraints. It is an example of highly automated short-term interval control. This paper starts by outlining the pre-existing business planning process, detailing the simple logic that produced the daily draw order. Next, the motivations for a real-time dispatch tool are presented, drawing comparison to the limitations in existing planning processes and how these can be overcome through an optimisation-based, autonomous, real-time dispatch tool. Subsequently, the paper details the Ratio Bogging Draw Strategy, through which tonnes targets are expressed continuously on draw bells or draw points as a ratio of total cumulative cave draw. This signifies artificial planning boundaries are removed and that draw targets are linked within a cave; such that tonnes are unlocked by bogging other parts of the cave, instead of as a function of time. This creates incentive within the target mechanism for fixing and bogging struggling draw areas whilst allowing uncapped progress if all draw targets are progressing within compliance. Furthermore, the optimisation tool developed is outlined, including the data it uses and the objectives it optimises. Finally, detail on the improvements to operations the implementation of this tool has brought, and the business process change it has facilitated are presented using Newcrest’s Cadia Valley Operations as a case study.

There is currently in the mining industry, as well as in other industries, a movement seeking to increase investments in decarbonisation processes to help combat global warming. Among some initiatives taken is replacing diesel-powered mobile equipment in the mines with electricity-powered equipment, such as electric off-highway trucks or even belt conveyors in the mining operation. Samarco is a Brazilian mining company that since its conception has used a conveyor belt mining system in its mining operation, using only a small number of trucks to complement the mining process. This mining process that combines conveyor belts and trucks has brought environmental gains for the company since the environmental impact of conventional truck-only mining is greater than that of the combined system. To measure these gains, a medium-term mining plan was developed in which two fleet scenarios were detailed. One scenario contemplated a high level of detail of belt mining seeking its maximisation, while the other considered the operation performed 100 per cent by trucks, eliminating the use of conveyor belts. Through the comparison of these two scenarios, it was possible to make an inventory of atmospheric emissions and greenhouse gases for each one of them considering data such as types of equipment, diesel consumption, total distance travelled and energy consumption. The results showed that the fleet scenario with conveyor belts results in periods with up to 15 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions and 37 per cent less total particulates compared with the truck-only scenario. Therefore, the results confirm the environmental benefits of the method and the need to look for ways to even expand it in future operations through a study to identify the potential areas in the long-term mining plan.

Canada’s Quebec province operates 26 metal mines, 19 of which are producing gold and generating over C$1.8 billion (US$1.3 billion) annually. In all those mines, numerous samples of rock are collected and analysed daily in laboratories in order to determine their gold content. However, laboratory results are generally available within 48 hours of sampling (depending on the number of samples received by the laboratory and the priority of the results), thus potentially slowing down mining activities. In an attempt to find a solution for delayed laboratory results, Laval University, in partnership with the National Research Council Canada (NRC), the National Institute for Scientific Research (INRS) and four mining companies (Agnico Eagle, Canadian Malartic, Hecla Québec and Iamgold) have launched the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) project for in situ real-time mining sample analysis. This work aims to minimise the amount of LIBS point sampling necessary to be representative of a full scan of the analysed area. Eight sampling patterns are investigated. A statistical analysis of the data was performed by varying the pattern steps. Results show that two of the patterns, 1 and 5 (single diagonal crossing the stratification of the samples with opposite slopes) minimise the amount of point sampling while remaining representative. The most successful results are obtained from steps which are greater than 6. In terms of the type of material, pattern 5 and steps 9 are better for core sampling, while pattern 1 and steps 8 are better for rock sampling. The geological explanation for these results is the heterogeneous distribution of gold in the sample which seems to be more homogeneous in the rocks than in the core sample due to the small rock size. "The requirement for environmental approvals and associated environmental impact assessments (EIAs) is now commonly regarded as a key milestone and body of work during project development. EIAs can be undertaken at various phases during project development, generally either:\ during the scoping or prefeasibility studies, where limited project information is available and the mitigation and management measures of the EIA become a set of criteria and commitments that control project design during the feasibility study, as an iterative approach whereby mitigation and management measures are developed through an integrated process with the engineering team, and measures are included in the feasibility study cost model following the feasibility study, where detailed project design information is available, the cost model is complete, and the EIA is an assessment of a fixed project with limited opportunities for mitigation and management measures to be integrated into engineering design. This paper investigates the advantages of integrating EIA into life-of-mine planning during the feasibility study phase, using the Tampakan Copper-Gold Project (the Project) as a case study. The Tampakan Project is located in the Philippines on the southern island of Mindanao. The Project involves the proposed development of three main areas of infrastructure:a large-scale, open pit copper-gold mine and associated mine site infrastructure (including tailings and mine waste storages, fresh water dam, concentrator, etc) a power station, port and filter plant (PPFP), located approximately 60 km from the mine a pipeline and transmission line linking the mine and PPFP sites.Examples of engineering measures developed through an iterative process to mitigate and manage predicted environmental and social impacts include design of water management infrastructure, modification of the disturbance footprint (eg roads realigned to avoid critical habitat) and realignment of project infrastructure to minimise impacted water catchments.CITATION:Blunt, J and Jones, J, 2012. During the pyrometallurgical processes, a substantial quantity of high-temperature ironmaking and steelmaking slags, generated at temperatures ranging from 1400 to 1600°C, is wasted, as the heat contained in these slags is released into the environment during the tapping process without effective utilisation. On the other hand, a significant amount of energy is required to reheat the cold materials for the manufacturing of glass and mineral-wool, often necessitating the addition of high-silica materials to facilitate the production process. In this study, an innovative approach is presented to harness the heat present in molten metallurgical slags to directly produce new raw materials for glass and mineral-wool manufacturing while simultaneously reducing energy consumption and mitigating CO2 emissions. The theoretical amount of waste glass that can be effectively added in the process has been estimated via thermodynamic calculation. Experimental assessments were conducted to examine the impact of high-silica waste materials on the dissolution, melting and fluidity. Potential recipes for glass and mineral-wool manufacturing were suggested and an assessment of the energy savings, and reduction in CO2 emissions with manufacturing of glass and mineral-wool using this innovative approach were included. It was determined that the processes could lead to a reduction of over 26 kg of CO2 emissions per 100 kg of new material used, primarily due to the utilisation of heat from slag and the accelerated smelting process.

Fibre-reinforced geopolymer concrete (FRGC) contains no Portland cement or steel reinforcement, but instead uses synthetic fibre reinforcement and a geopolymer binder. The use of geopolymer binder in lieu of Portland cement reduces the concrete’s embedded energy (CO2 emissions) whilst the use of synthetic fibres eliminates the issue of reinforcement corrosion, thus enhancing the overall long-term durability of concrete. This paper presents the development of FRGC during a three-year project funded by the Victorian Science Agenda and a consortium of five organisations. The work involved laboratory and field trials and the production of prototype tunnel segments that have been subject to durability and fire testing.FRGC has exceeded the performance of the Portland cement-based control mix in terms of flexural strength, chloride diffusion, water sorptivity and drying shrinkage. Furthermore, the FRGC segments subjected to a simulated hydrocarbon fire test did not exhibit explosive spalling; however, the creep of FRGC was approximately three times that of the steel fibre-reinforced Portland cement-based control mix. The compressive strength and tensile splitting strength of the FRGC were also lower than the control mix. These differences need to be allowed for in the design using FRGC.Prototype bolted tunnel segments of up to 0.8?t mass have been produced from FRGC using standard production techniques and ambient curing. These were successfully produced within a 24-hour production cycle. Cut sections through the segments showed good compaction and even distribution of fibres. The estimated carbon footprint of tunnel segments produced using FRGC is approximately 70 per cent less than that of Portland cement-based segments containing 25 per cent fly ash and steel reinforcement.The results to date indicate that FRGC has the potential to produce a new generation of tunnel segments and, in general, precast concrete products with increased durability and substantially reduced carbon emissions compared to the Portland cement-based concrete with steel reinforcement.A summary of further research carried out by CH2M HILL into a complete elimination of ferrous inserts from segmental concrete tunnel lining is also summarised in this paper. For the mineral industry, sustainability seems to mean socially positive and ecologically neutral mineral extraction. Mines are financed and developed in response to demand for their products. The purpose of my paper is to indicate the potential dimension of demand. As part of an unrelated study which I undertook ten years ago, it became apparent that there is a persistent relationship within communities between infant mortality and mineral use; greater mineral use corresponds to a lower rate of infant mortality. This comes as no surprise; sufficient potable water, a reliable supply of food, hygienic waste disposal, hot water and refrigeration all improve the chances of survival of the more vulnerable members of any community. The predictable provision of these facilities requires the application of minerals. This relationship is supported by a table (Appendix 1) included in the UNICEF publication, æThe State of the WorldÆs Children 2001Æ. This table lists regional infant mortality rate (IMR) statistics from around the world, including a listing for æindustrialised countriesÆ. Such countries experience an IMR lower by an order of magnitude than any other region. æIndustrialisedÆ inevitably involves the use of metallic and energy minerals. The principal use of copper is in the generation and distribution of power; it is fundamental to any industrialisation. IMR is a valuable connection because it quantifies caring for the young, a vital strategic driver of human behaviour independent of time, place, fashion or economic circumstances. I have tabulated the population, IMR and the copper demand per head of population for countries containing over 99 per cent of the population of the world in the years 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1989, and 1999. These countries have been consolidated into four groups, Very High, High, Medium and Low rates of infant mortality (UNICEF has used this terminology; the Low group includes all the æindustrialised countriesÆ). The purpose of this consolidation was to reduce the volume of work, to dampen out the impact of regional wars and business cycles, and to dampen out the variable quality of information. Based on the pattern of the copper demand, population and IMR over the last 50 years, I have projected the likely copper demand in 50 years time. A dominant feature of my tabulation is the increase per decade in copper use per head and a corresponding reduction of the IMR. The word æuseÆ is preferred to æconsumptionÆ because it is estimated that over 80 per cent of all the copper ever mined is still in circulation There are two major influences at work; one is the absolute increase in population (UN estimates for 2050 are updated periodically) and the second is the movement of countries into a higher pattern of use and lower IMR. For example the Medium group in 1989 had an infant mortality rate approximating that of the Low group in 1960. With the population of the Medium group (which includes Russia and China) forecast to reach 2.6 billion in 2050, the world copper demand in that year will be significantly greater than the present figure. Nevertheless it will not be as great relatively as the increase of over 300 per cent in the last 50 years.

The 2 Moz Vogue mineral resource is a recent discovery at the Sunrise Dam gold mine (SDGM), lying approximately 600 m vertically below the Sunrise Dam open pit. Unlike most other lodes, which are dominated either by steep vein sets or shallow high-strain (shear) zones, it lies broadly in the hinge of a folded felsic porphyry body, where it cuts intermediate volcanic lavas and volcaniclastic rocks and is not specifically concentrated at a lithofacies contact. The mineralisation is controlled by a complex interplay of moderate to shallow, west-dipping high-strain zones that are transected by irregular and discontinuous high-grade, north-west-, north–south- and east–west-trending breccia sheets that initially caused problems with attempts to model broad domains. However, by combining the structural controls and styles with the distribution of gold, arsenic, sulfur and antimony, we have improved opportunities for scheduling, extracting and processing the most appropriate material considering the current mining and processing constraints.The early delineation process for the Vogue lode revealed a significant mineral resource for the SDGM, coupled with the recognition of some potentially difficult downstream implications for mining and processing. The ultimate success of mining at Vogue will be a consequence of combining standardised data collection and geological modelling techniques with the results of the novel innovative techniques applied at an early stage of the project.Innovation (in the truest sense) drives change and application to deliver efficient and effective outcomes. Initial data generation and interpretation in lodes above Vogue provided a sound geological model based on strong structural foundations, leading to ideas that could be tested and validated by stress inversion analysis and modelling simulations. Geomechanical modelling simulations, based on the structural analysis, then provided an insight into both the structural and fluid evolution of the system and highlighted target areas. This promoted support for deeper drilling and sampling, which lead to the discovery of Vogue.With additional data, the structural model for Vogue was re-engineered through combination with geochemical and hyperspectral analysis and detailed geological and geostatistical domaining. Initial poor results from metallurgical tests from a small batch sample refocused efforts to undertake mineral and chemical characterisation and profiling (geometallurgy) and combine this data with the composite geological-structural-geochemical model. The main direction in the mechanisation in the mines of the Donbas and the USSR is long-face technology with complexes on the base of hydraulic supports. On the base of the 30 year old experience of exploitation of the coal clearing systems the serious data about the behaviour of the contained rock, display of underground pressure 'on longwalls and preparatory workings have been accumulated. Exploitation works in mines of the USSR are carried out at different depths: from 1000m to 1200m. There are 26 mines in Donbas, which exceed the depth of 1000m. It is the mines of Donbas, where is a rich experience of the exploitation of coal seams in various conditions. Besides, there are wide variations on the factors of the extraction thickness, depth of seam, angle of dip, occurrence of gas dynamics and others. In many scientific establishments, and in Donetsk Polytechnical Institute also, there are scientific research/results, which can be of interest for the coal mining countries.The volume of coal mining from longwall system-mechanised walls in Donbas became stable at the end of the 70s at level of 70 percent. All the efforts to increase this level have not given any notable results, not saying about the technical-economical data, which gradually deteriorate. It shows that positive progress in using the technology for the long walls is over and it is necessary to find new ways of mechanisation of coal winning.

Precast concrete segmental linings have enjoyed widespread use around the world, and are the lining type of choice for tunnels constructed using a shielded tunnel boring machine. However, there is significant variation in the design of such linings from one country to the next in such areas as materials, geometry, fixtures and fittings, waterproofing and reinforcement to name but a few. This arises because the speed at which the technology has developed within some countries and regions has sometimes outstripped the transfer of such technologies to the rest of the world.This paper provides some insights into the variations in lining design in different parts of the world with the aim of providing designers and constructors alike a reference for the different methods adopted. It provides a context for these developments by briefly summarising historical reviews of this subject before looking at some of the developments around the world over the last 15–20 years. The developments are presented with some reference to the reasons for implementation, and the advantages and limitations commented on. "The Cerro Corona mine consists of a Cu-Au porphyry deposit located in the Andes of northern Peru. The deposit comprises a typical Cu-Au multiphase porphyry mineralisation that has been overprinted by an epithermal event. This has generated a complex pattern of argillic alteration facies, which was accompanied by a locally structural-controlled Au-Cu mineralisation with the presence of gold and limited Cu sulfides and sulfosalts. These features, along with the porphyry-style mineralisation, produced a multifaceted occurrence of gold.Since the beginning of operations at Cerro Corona in 2008 there has been a continuous improvement of the geological and mineralogical knowledge. All mineralogical studies have mainly focused on host rock types and, to a lesser extent, alteration minerals, but little work has been done on the mineralisation itself. As a consequence, limited mineralogical information was available for use in the process optimisation initiatives.In the last two years, a series of mineralogical characterisation studies were undertaken with two main goals. First, to gain an understanding of the mineralisation genesis and second, to obtain a detailed characterisation of copper and gold minerals to support ongoing process optimisation. The first goal was achieved by conventional optical microscopy while the second required electronic microscopy and other microanalyses due to the necessity of quantifying several minerals of interest for the processing.The results were used to refine pre-existing geometallurgical domains, explain copper and gold losses in the flotation process and to some extent, improve copper and gold recoveries. The mineralogical characterisation is an ongoing work. "Recent project failures have called into question the use and relevance of benchmarking and independent reviews, forcing a rethink of traditional processes and procedures.With cost estimates and schedules dramatically varying from lows seen around the global financial crisis to peaks experienced in the recent mining boom, benchmarking has ranged between essential and misleading.Profound shifts are now underway in future project delivery strategies as the market moves away from cost-plus engineering, procurement and construction management. The current trends in project implementation are to utilise more lump-sum design and construct or fixed-price supply and construct contracts. This trend will remove transparency in detailed cost information by reducing the sources and clarity of cost data.Independent peer reviews (IPRs) of studies and investment recommendations performed over the last decade have both failed to prevent flawed or deficient projects from proceeding to approval and funding, and been successful in ensuring that owners did not proceed with doomed investments.In recent times, it has been recognised by some owners, contractors and engineers that traditional benchmarking checks or IPRs, or a combination of both, will not necessarily produce reliable assessments of study conclusions and of the forecasts of project outcomes. To be of value, the benchmarking process now also needs to recognise the highly volatile responses from the engineering and construction industry to the current and future markets for their services.Similarly, reviewers who draw upon benchmarks of past project experiences on an understanding of the things that shaped and influenced their outcomes need to be more aware of how a future dynamic market may impact the outcome of the projects and raise warning flags accordingly.With the commodity cycle currently approaching what is hoped is its bottom, ensuring that benchmarking and independent reviews evolve into reliable, transparent and worthwhile processes becomes even more important. The Synthetic Rutile (SR) plant operations, North Capel, produce electrostatic precipitator (ESP) fume and kiln scrubber residue. Typically ESP contains about 18 per cent Ti, 13 per cent Fe, 0.5 per cent Mn, eight per cent Si, six per cent Al, 16 per cent C, 0.9 per cent Zn, 0.6 per cent Pb, 300 ppm As, 300 ppm Cr and 5 ppm Cd. These wastes are held in a storage dam together with neutralised acid effluent (AE) liquor. A project was initiated to treat the fume and produce a benign residue that could be delivered to landfill, reducing dam space storage. Plant AE, containing free acid (9 - 14 g/L), Fe (6 - 7 g/L) and Mn (1 g/L), was used to leach ESP. The degree of extraction achieved for various elements include about 20 per cent Zn, almost 50 per cent As, five per cent Al, 0.4 per cent Pb and 15 per cent Cd. Extraction was most effective at pH The residue from AE leaching still contained Pb. TCLP tests of the leach residue produced Pb extraction significantly higher than the 0.1 ppm stipulated by Class 2 landfill guidelines. Other elements (eg As, Cd, Cr) successfully met the limits. Further leaching of the residue with EDTA extracted up to 65 per cent of Pb content. TCLP tests on treated residue showed Pb leaching potential of Lead was removed from the leach circuit as the sulphate by acidification of EDTA leach liquor, allowing EDTA to be recycled. The study showed that one waste stream can be used to treat another and help reduce plant waste.

"Cayeli Bakir Isletmeleri is an underground copper-zinc mine in turkey. The ore is highly variable with feed grades ranging from 1–4 per cent copper and 1–10 per cent zinc. Due to this variability, ore characterisation and blending strategies are crucial for performance optimisation.This paper presents a case study for a multidisciplinary approach to process optimisation, integrating Geometallurgical and advanced control methods to achieve optimised plant performance. The results from comprehensive metallurgical tests and surveys were used to develop a mathematical model utilising SGS’s Integrated Geometallurgical Simulator® (version number 2.5.24.0). The model was employed to determine the most appropriate operational settings required to ensure that optimised grades and recoveries are achieved for each ore type.SGS’s Modular Expert Technology (MET) expert system was then implemented to target these optimum operational ranges utilising online grade and froth velocity measurements. At the mining industry, there are several uncertainties that may affect the mobile mining equipment fleet sizing and usage, such as commodity supply and demand, which impacts the mineral price, environmental licenses to allow operations and strategic decisions made by the own mining company. Due to that, it may happen to acquire a mobile mining equipment for a specific site and before it finishes the entire forecasted life cycle, the machine gets idle on that operation and a decision must be made regarding this matter. On large mining companies with several sites, equipment transfer provides a good solution to solve this issue and at the same time it provides operational flexibility and allows to use the equipment until the initially planned working hours. This article presents a method to compare technically and financially whether it’s more feasible to transfer a used equipment or to buy a new one. In other words, we will compare a brand-new machine versus a used one in terms of safety, net present value (NPV) considering both capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operational expenditures (OPEX), technological obsolescence, risks, equipment maintenance reliability and lead times. Although it’s not the main purpose of the paper, it will also be briefly discussed the importance of having a considerable amount of backup equipment to handle low likelihood and high consequence risks that may materialise. This backup equipment portfolio is particularly important to avoid loss of sales and profits in case the production plan changes and it demands further equipment than initially planned to cope with the forecasted production.

"There have always been development projects that fall short of expectations. In the last decade, we have seen more than the usual number of mining and oil/gas development projects taking significantly longer to develop and costing materially more than expected. The recent resource-equity market slump proves that investors are now far more cautious about investing new capital in the mineral and petroleum resources sector.What have we learned since 2005? Why have projects missed their targets? Why do investors often feel misled?Valuation of a project and the estimation of value is a more complex process than the evaluation of the merits of project development. The merit of project development can be clear from a prefeasibility evaluation, but this is no reason to skip the rigour of a feasibility study. The valuation of any project that is developed with any added risk should be discounted for this added risk.The development of a project impacts on other stakeholders, and the indirect cost of these impacts can have material implications for the cost structure, time and ultimate valuation of the project for its financial backers. The development of new projects (and thereby supply) can also have an impact on commodity prices, and therefore an impact on returns for financial backers.This paper will provide commentary on the author’s experiences and observations as a project developer and operator for 25 years, before becoming a project financier a decade ago.CITATION:Rozman, L I, 2016.
