Traditionally, the development of a mineral resource project goes through a fairly set pattern of decisions from what commodities to search for; where to look; how to locate; what are the reserves; how can they be exploited with optimum returns for all stakeholders; where are the markets and what will be the price received; what financing arrangments? However, due to the unique nature of most mineral resource properties, the relative significance of individual parameters on the ultimate development decision will vary from project to project. Sensitivity analysis in its formal sense is most frequently related to the economic analysis of a project particularly in conjunction with the ultimate development decision making process, and acknowledges the uncertainty of the actual values with their impact on the corporate decision making yardsticks. In many cases, this analysis merely adds more values to confuse the decision makers who may well opt for some subjective rationale to overcome the numeric confusion. However, sensitivity analysis should be used more frequently to exploit the development dollar to its maximum, THROUGHOUT the phases leading to the development decision. It is essential to identify the critical inputs to the various decision tiers in a project as early as possible and direct the funds to ensure that these parameters are determined as accurately as possible. Examples are used to illustrate the need for an even-handed quantification of the parameters which affect the outcome of decisions en route to the final one while minimising the risk in making an optimum assessment in relation to development funds Available.

A comprehensive analysisof rock structures in non-oriented (axially oriented) drillcore is now available (Laing, in press). The system embodies new concepts which better equip the geologist and engineer to deal from the outset with optimising the acquisition of structural information in drillcore, logging, interpreting, and graphically presenting the results. The few existing techniques for determining orientations of structures are augmented by a wide range of new techniques, and all are brought together into two solution types by considering the underlying Euclidean geometries. Analysis of these solution types in terms of what data are required to implement each solution and what assumptions need to be made, leads to strategies which facilitate intelligent design of different drilling programs for blind and outcropping situations. Drillcorc is variably structurally fertile, depending on the number of different structures present. This concept fosters the selective logging only of the more fertile core. Drillholes are also variably fertile, depending on their orientational relationship to the structures in the host rocks. Structural parameters are either vectorial or non-vectorial. Vectorial structures parameters comprise normal structural orientations plus polar vectors like vergence, younging, shear sense and so on. They can be determined by one of two solution types: external solutions, which use an external reference structure to fix the drillcore and thus permit orientation of all structures within that core, and internal solutions, which use orientational data from a selected structure at three or more different drillhole orientation to determine the unique orientation of that structure, without reference to any external structure.

There are many important physical phenomena in mine ventilation which involve transient mass and heat transfer processes. These processes have been modeled using differential equations often solved with close form solution. Within the last two decades, many numerical schemes have been devised to solve these mass-transfer problems. Much of this effort has focused on variants of the finite element and finite difference methods. In this paper, the solution of mass transfer models in mine ventilation by finite difference technique is discussed. Specifically, the computational effort and the accuracy of the solution are presented.

The Bureau of Mineral Resources has been engaged in regional geological and geophysical field work in the Alligator River and Cobourg Peninsula area since 1971, following the discovery of major uranium deposits. Geophysical work commenced with a regional airborne magnetic and radiometric survey which was followed up by some helicopter and ground work in August 1973. The interpretation of the earlier radiometric work is presented in conjunction with the results obtained from the follow-up work. Analyses of 100 outcrop and drill core samples collected have provided basic information on the physical properties and concentrations of uranium and thorium in various rock types. The uranium determinations were made by X-ray fluorescence and delayed neutron analysis, good agreement being obtained between the two methods. X-ray fluorescence was the main analytical technique used because of its ability to produce both uranium and thorium determinations.

In seeking to improve the economic performance of mines, the management or human aspects are usually seen to be quite seperate from, and more significant than, the technical aspects. There are obvious aspects of industrial relations, man-management, skills training and supervision that are currently the focus of efforts to improve the productivity and quality of the mining process. However technology also has a lot to offer. Analysis of the costs involved suggests that innovations leading to improvement in the productivity of the excavation and transport of overburden and the recovery of coal (both in the mine and preperation plant) can lead to improvements in the economic performance of a mine that may outstrip the obvious non-technical or management opportunities for improvement. While there are some innovations currently being investigated within the industry that relate to the design of mining equipment, the type of machinery being used in open cut mines has not changed dramatically over the last twenty five years. It is also likely that mining equipment will remain essentially of the same form in the forseeable future. If significant improvements to mining performance are to be achieved other than by futher increases in the scale of machinery, then we need to seek ways to operate these same types of machines in a more productive and controlled manner. This paper discusses the identification of mining processes the improvement of which is likely to have a significant effect on mining costs and performance. Some areas of current research are discussed and potentially fruitful areas for future development are identified.

One of the responsibilities of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works is to provide a sewerage system for the metropolis of Melbourne which now contains over 2.5 million people. In providing this sewerage system it was necessary for the Board to embark on a large tunnelling programme some 20 years ago. As a result of this extensive tunnel construction programme, tunnel boring machines and shaft sinking methods have been developed to cope with the soft ground and soft to medium rock found in the southern and eastern areas of Melbourne where the majority of the recent tunnelling has been carried out. While in the last few years radical changes in construction methods have not been made, development has continued and improvements have been made, which have enabled the Board to extend the limits of the ground conditions in which it can efficiently construct shafts and also tunnels with boring Machines.

After review of the status of research on optirnisation of retreat longwall faces it is argued that an acceptable optimisation model must be based upon realistic cost data that take into account not only the face costs, but the total panel costs. These include the cost of development, face cost, removal and installation cost. The determined optimum length of a retreat longwall face is based upon a realistic model and actual costs.Parameters that influence the optimum face length have been varied over wide limits to allow determination of the sensitivity of the model and the effect of the parameters on the optimum face length. It is concluded that for medium production rates and medium system availability, the optimum face length of a retreat longwall face under Australian conditions lies between 180 and 220 metres.

Large GDP increases in the Pacific Rim countries have been accompanied by similarly large increases in demand for oil products. In the case of residual fuels, this demand has been tempered by the substitution of other energy products such as coal or gas.In the region's developing and newly industrialised nations, it has not been possible to make the very large investements in infrastructure which allow other energy sources to be used for transportation. As a result, GDP growth has been mirrored in the demand growth for automotive fuels. Other non-sustitutable products such as lubricants have also benefitted by the region's GDP growth.The combination of a number of years of sustained growth, coupled with increasing quality requirements is now stretching the upgrading capacity of the region's refineries. If, as seems likely, the region continues to enjoy a high GDP growth rate, then this will be accompanied by increasing reliance on finished products coming out of the Middle East. The owners of the most simple form of refinery in which crude is simply distilled and the naphtha reformed into petrol will face major capital investments. If they decide not to bear this cost, they will face increasing problems in selling their surplus residual fuel oil at an economic price. Quality will become an increasingly important issue. Not only in the well publicised areas such as unleaded petrol, but also for products such as lubricants which play a major role in the efficiency of modem equipment. Quality of service such as hours of opening, ease of access, and service station facilities will also become increasingly important as the oil companies use these to attract customers and gain brand differentiation.

The tailing retreatment project rated at 10 000 t/day commenced operations in October 1982. The operation consists of dredging, feed preparation, cyanide leaching and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold recovery followed by Zadra atmospheric stripping and electrowinning. For the first two years the operation was adversely affected by excessive cyanide consumption and low gold extraction. Investigations demonstrated that the very fine, or slime, fraction of the tailing was the dominant consumer of cyanide and dissolved oxygen. The plant flowsheet was subsequently modified by inclusion of 80 - 100 mm dia. cyclones for slimes separation and a 31 m dia. thickener for water recovery. Treatment of deslimed feed in the CIP plant has reduced sodium cyanide consumption from an average 1.85 kg/t to 1.15 kg/t. The reduced oxygen consumption by the CIP plant feed has resulted in higher dissolved oxygen levels, frequently reaching supersaturation after 4 to 5 h contact time. This has allowed much improved gold extraction from the existing CIP plant capacity. Gold extraction from the mixed pyritic siliceous tailing has improved from an average U prior to desliming to a current 57%. Investigations are continuing on the recovery of gold from the discarded slimes.

Gold recovery by the cyanidation process is often accompanied by the leaching of other species. This leads to the depletion of the level of free cyanide and oxygen available for gold cyanidation. The largest proportion of the consumed cyanide is diverted by the cyanicides (eg S, Cu, Zn, Fe, etc) into non-valuable complexes.COREMÆs Extractive Metallurgy team has been conducting a research program on the improvement of the gold cyanidation process. As a part of this program, the current study aims to investigate the effect of certain operating parameters on the reactions involved during preoxidation and cyanidation. Flotation tailings and single mineral samples such as pyrite, sphalerite and chalcopyrite, along with their different combinations, were analysed to highlight the influence of ore mineralogy on the operating conditions. The effects of different kinds of oxidants (oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, ferricyanide and ozone) and chemical additives (ammonium sulfate) were investigated.Experiments conducted in alkaline solutions reveal that mineralogy is a key parameter since pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite react quite differently during preoxidation and cyanidation. A significant increase in sulfur dissolution, especially on pyrite, was observed by applying preoxidation. H2O2 preoxidation showed a positive effect on increasing sulfate formation, a desirable by-product from the cyanide consumption point of view. Preoxidation of synthetic ores with ferricyanide resulted in boosting thiosulfate formation. Tests conducted on flotation tailings from a polymetallic mine revealed that a short preoxidation increases the dissolution of the ore leading to higher gold recovery and lower cyanide consumption. Regarding the formation of thiocyanate, the most undesirable by-product of the cyanidation, ferricyanide and ozone were found particularly efficient to hinder their formation. The Bottle Creek mine, when opened next month, will consist of three open cuts, Emu, VB and Boags, feeding ore to a central mill. The open cuts cover a strike length of 4.5 kilometres which forms part of a linear structure, which can be traced geochemically for 26.0 kilometres. With the exception of a few small gossanous outcrops at Emu, the deposits are completely covered with insitu laterite and alluvial overburden. Since its discovery in 1984, the deposit has been subjected to three major reverse circulation (RC) drilling programmes which have successively closed up the drill spacing on the main mineralized zone to 25m horizontally and less than 25m vertically. All resource calculations have been based primarily on samples of RC drill cuttings from these programmes. Ore reserve calculations have been completed after each drilling phase. They began with a simple polygonal technique, progressed through two sectional half-distance calculations and are now being completed with a 3-D geostatistical technique. Because of the style of mineralization, Norgold personnel paid particular attention to assessing the variability of the mineralization by using repeat samples, repeat analysis and diamond drill vs RC comparisons. In addition, close attention has been paid to obtaining an accurate estimate of the global SG of the ore bodies. Particular care has been taken to obtain complete drill intersections of the orebody and to maximize wet sample recoveries. Extensive re-sampling and re-analysis of samples has confirmed that Bottle Creek is unusual for an oxidized gold deposit in that all the gold appears to be very fine grained, and evenly distributed within the mineralized zone.

The Department of Mapping and Surveying (DMS), the Australian Key Centre in Land Information Studies (AKCLIS), the Department of Industry Development (DID) and the State Government Computer Centre (SGCC) are testing a regional information network in northern Queensland. Several study sites have been chosen by different groups of participants. The members of each common-interest group share their data for the site. They can also access datasets supplied by other organisations that are not directly involved in the particular study being undertaken. The participants include state government departments, local authorities, fed- eral organisations and the private sector. The participants communicate with computer systems in Brisbane via Q-Net. Q-Net is a pilot State government tele- communications network, established by the Department of Industry Development. Q-Net uses the communications sat- ellite AUSSAT 1 as the primary instrument of data transfer. The Q-Net network is a star system, with a Master Earth Station in Brisbane acting as a hub for radial earth stations, located throughout Queensland.

The aim of this research is to develop a model through which the appropriate paste recipe parameters, for example solid content and cement content, can be derived given the stope specific requirements such as stope dimensions, required strength and curing time. A large number of samples and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests were conducted at the Angas Zinc Mine (AZM) paste plant and testing facility. Samples were varied in tailings solids content, cement content and sand content. The results of this testing were modelled to determine the UCS relationship to each of the parameters. The output of this modelling was an easy-to-use program that outputs the design mixture given the stope dimensions and required stope backfill-curing time. This allowed flexibility within the mining schedule for curing times of cemented paste backfill stopes. The optimised schedule using the stope specific mix design, when compared to the standard 14-day curing time used previously, resulted in a smoother weekly mine production schedule. For the modelled 12-week period (one quarter) the 14-day curing time would result in an eight-day shutdown of the mill. The cost for each shutdown is in the order of $125 000/d. Due to the unique nature of each mine’s tailings, this exact outcome would not be directly applicable to another paste fill site. However, the process in this report could be followed for another site to achieve a system similar to the output of this project. There are a number of mineral processing operations which produce at some point a stream of hot particulates. At today's energy prices it becomes important to recover the energy held in the hot particulates. Sometimes it is convenient to use gas, e.g. in air pre- heating, and this will be appropriate in some circumstances. There are cases where it would be very useful if energy in the hot processed particles could be exchanged to the cold feed solids. This can be achieved within appropriate limitations by countercurrent heat exchangers comprised of parallel channels which contain, alternately, fluidized solids of 'hot' and 'cold' streams respectively. A pilot- plant has been built. Some calculations relating to industrial application will be Presented.

The Ambuklao hydroelectric dam was originally constructed in the 1950s in the remote and mountainous region of the northern Philippines. Following its construction the dam has suffered heavily due to siltation and a partial collapse of the intake structure due to a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the region in 1990. Between the years 1990 and 1999 the power station progressively lost its capacity to generate power. In 1999 the owner took the power station out of commission. The power station remained idle over the next 12 years. In 2008 the power station was sold to a new owner who commissioned the rehabilitation works.The rehabilitation project restored the operating status of the power station in June 2011 and increased its capacity from 75 MW to 105 MW. The civil contract of the rehabilitation project required the construction of a new intake structure behind an in situ rock coffer dam on the edge of the existing reservoir, new 6.2?m diameter × 124?m deep blind sunk shaft behind the intake structure, which connects to a new 6.8?m horseshoe profile headrace tunnel that ultimately connected onto the existing vertical penstocks which feed three No 35 MW Horizontal Turbines rated at 155?m head.The unique challenge in rehabilitating this existing hydropower station involved finding solutions that would conclusively deal with the challenging geological and hydrogeological conditions associated with excavating new tunnels and a drop shaft beneath a live dam.McConnell Dowell was awarded the civil works package for the rehabilitation works in August 2008. The Ambuklao rehabilitation program took 33 months to complete.Over 600?m of tunnels were excavated in highly weathered and often challenging geotechnical conditions via drill and blast with the extensive use of high-pressure fissure grouting to control groundwater ingress that was surcharged by the dam.This paper focuses on the use of high-pressure fissure grouting that took place to enable the excavation of the new waterway system and intake structure.CITATION:Bowskill, A and Harrison, C, 2014. Thick clay tills below potash mine tailings and brine ponds are important natural barriers protecting fresh water aquifers in Saskatchewan. Centrifuge modelling was applied to assess geochemical processes and impacts of dilute brine (0.1 M NaCl) migration through clay till core samples obtained from non saline, unoxidised clay till at a mine site. At accelerated gravity of 876 + g, during each day of centrifuge modelling, flow driven through a 52 mm length core simulated transport through a 45 m thick clay over ~2100 years. Hydraulic conductivity, monitored continuously before and during brine permeation, was low and relatively constant (8.5 + 10-12 m/s), confirming that confining stresses prevent permeability increase. Core density and porosity measurements confirmed that reactive transport occurred under realistic in situ conditions. Breakthrough (defined by C/C0 = 0.5) of non-reactive Cl- occurred at 25 days. The slight delay for Na+ breakthrough, associated with small increases in Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations in the effluent were attributed to ion exchange, but carbonate reactions were relatively unimportant. Cation exchange analysis of core samples was inconclusive without corrections for porewater Na+ and carbonate dissolution. Geochemical processes that were observed during centrifuge modelling were successfully simulated using the 1D geochemical transport code PHREEQC. Solute transport was dominated by diffusion with limited ion exchange to delay Na+ migration. Brine would not break through a 45 m thick clay for tens of thousands of years. Based on these findings, the thick clay till at this site, if laterally extensive and undisturbed by drilling activity, is likely to act as an effective natural barrier to vertical brine migration over the long term.

The True Pipe® in-line sampler was developed in an attempt to address the need for a mechanically reliable and correctly designed sampler to suit one-dimensional pressurised slurry pipelines, often found in metallurgical process plants but for which no reliable and representative sampling solution as yet exists.The design, whose operation is based on the principle of symmetry, is described by Dominique François-Bongarçon (2005) with the synchronous opening and closing of relevant valves. It representatively isolates portions of the particulate material stream at predetermined intervals for effective extraction of primary increments for subsequent sample compositing.Theory of Sampling applicable solutions have proven elusive in flowing pressurised particulate material streams, with various attempts to date not having formulated a viable, mechanically reliable and acceptable design.Compliance to sampling theory is critical, and a number of tests were conducted where certain operating parameters were altered to determine their influence and sensitivity on sampling representativeness.The results of the initial series of tests performed on a carefully designed rig are presented, with additional work discussed for necessary investigation in the near future.Getting closer to a robust, economic and correct design for this challenging application in the minerals industry may now not be that far away. Plant management staff will see improved metallurgical mineral balances around their process plants and significantly reduced sampling discrepancies, particularly in tailings applications. The productivity and economic success of a German hard coal mine is attributed to the high productivity of a small number of operation points; however high rates of production are associated with increased gas emission at the working sites. Therefore modem high technology is required in order to reach the planned production rate, since high methane concentrations often cause unplanned breakdowns in operation. The optimised simulation of gas emission is a fundamental planning tool for mine design as well as for determining the potential of a coal deposit and has increased in significance over the last years. Methane-INFO enables the three-dimensional, graphical simulation of a working site taking account of different aspects such as the mine design, ventilation, production rate, geology, seam quality, gas exhaustion, etc. The following paper gives a short overview over the benefits of the discussed system.
