Geoscan is used for multi-elemental analysis of conveyed bulk materials in real time. It has been used for coal analysis since the 1990s, in the cement industry, and since 2003 for measuring mineral ore quality. Geoscan-M has proven performance and demonstrated paybacks of weeks or months, in iron ore, manganese, copper, zinc-lead and phosphate industries. Geoscan-M measures continuously through the full bed depth and is unaffected by belt speed, particle size, layering and dust levels. Increments of two minutes (typically one to five minutes) are accurately measured and provide the plant operators with tonnage weighted results of each element within seconds.A Geoscan installed after crushing is able to measure quality shortly after mining. The analysis results can be used to divert the increments based on composition, such as diverting waste for disposal and diverting marginal material to a stockpile for processing at a later date. The bulk sorting process allows different qualities to be placed into relevant stockpiles for subsequent blending. Material meeting product DSO (Direct Shipping Ore) quality can bypass a beneficiation circuit to prevent unnecessary treatment costs. An analyser in a blending application enables proportioning of different quality feed materials from multiple stockpiles to achieve a desired compositional consistency for process feed. The parameter used for decisions may be; a) primary metal content, e.g. Cu, Fe, P, etc. b) deleterious component content, e.g. Mg as an indicator of talc content, c) process parameter content, or a combination of these. Process parameter content may be the elemental ratio between critical components, e.g. Cu:S ratio, Fe:Si ratio, basicity, Lime Saturation Factor, etc. or the content of an “indicator” element, e.g. Si as an indicator of material hardness or grindability.Measurement of the composition in real time enables prompt feedback to the mining operators and also feed forward to the process operators. Compositional variability can be critical in the process and advance warning enables appropriate reactions prior to processing. This may include modifying the feed rate, changing the feed blend (through additives), or modifying reagent dosing in anticipation of a change in feed quality. Benefits include, but are not limited to; reducing waste processing, improved feed grade stability, reducing energy, water and grinding media consumption, producing less tailings, increasing process efficiency, higher metal recovery, better plant utilisation, reducing plant downtime, better utilising mined material, all achieved using the same process plant throughput capacity.CITATION:Kurth, H, 2015. Titanium and Zirconium Industries Pty. Ltd. separates rutile and zircon from heavy mineral concentrate recovered from sand dunes on the east coast of North Stradbroke Island, Queensland. Separation plant feed is delivered to Dunwich, on the west coast, by a seven mile aerial ropeway traversing the island. Mining and concentration is effected by two floating dredge-concentrators now operating on the beach 31; miles from the aerial ropeway terminal. Heavy mineral concentrate is transported hydraulically from the dredges to the ropeway through a 6 in. pipeline. Six pumps in series deliver 24 ton/hr of dry solids in a pulp containing 13 per cent solids. For maximum economy the transfer pumping system is controlled deliberately to cause transportation in the zone of incipient settlement of solids, ieat velocities below the limit deposit velocity for the particular pipe diameter, pulp density, and specific gravity of solids. Automatic density control, based on a combination of power consumption and pipeline pressure, eliminates the danger of plugging the line but periodic flushing is necessary to remove gradual accumulation of solids in the bottom of the pipe. After 15 months operation the pipeline was descaled with hydrochloric acid to remove severe blistering with rust nodules, regrowth of which is now prevented by continuous injection of inhibitors. After transporting 100,000 tons of heavy mineral the average wear on the steel portion of the pipeline was 0·01 in. and indications are that wear on the asbestos cement portion is less.DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONSGeographyTitanium & Zirconium Industries Pty. Management of solid mine wastes, particularly waste rock, requires careful planning to reduce the likelihood of sulfide oxidation, and generation of acid rock drainage (ARD). Waste management strategies must focus on obtaining a thorough understanding of the environmental characteristics of future waste rock materials. In this study, a waste management strategy for characterising underground waste rock was developed at a polymetallic underground mine in western Tasmania to determine which materials were appropriate for surficial placement. The criteria for surficial placement set by the regulator were that materials had to be non-acid forming and non-metalliferous. A range of cost-effective field-based tools, mineralogical assessments and mineral chemistry techniques were used on a suite of representative drill core material to determine an appropriate waste management strategy. Ultimately, a modified geochemistry–mineralogy–texture–geometallurgy (GMTG) approach was designed, whereby geoenvironmental focused logging and simple prescreening tools such as paste pH and sulfur analyses were used at stage-one; routine acid base accounting and leachate tests at stage-two; and validation tools including X-ray diffractometry and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICPMS) at stage-three. This approach should be considered for other mine sites at early and operational life-of-mine stages with similar deposit characteristics, to ensure correct screening and placement of potentially hazardous waste materials in suitable above-ground waste repositories or mined-out mine sections.CITATION:Parbhakar-Fox, A and Lottermoser, B G, 2017. Sublevel caving (SLC) is a mining method adopted in a wide range of mining depths and ground conditions with various layouts adopted to suit orebody geometry. Sublevel caving offers more flexibility and versatility compared to other cave mining methods and is a low cost alternative to open stoping. SLC also has the advantage that stopes are not required to remain stable during production, and no backfill is required. This flexibility combined with increasing pressure on mines to target deeper and lower grade mineralisation has led to increased uptake of the method. The implementation of SLC mining methods across a wide range of mining depths and rock mass conditions has led to ground control practices which vary globally from mine to mine. To date, there has been limited documentation of ground control practices in SLC mining and few benchmarks available in the literature. This paper describes the main findings from a global benchmark of sublevel cave mines conducted over three years as part of the Caving 2040 research consortium. The purpose of the project was to document and compare operational practices, technical aspects and hazard management techniques across SLC mines around the world. The review included 21 mines spread over four continents and 17 different mining companies. This paper provides an overview of geotechnical conditions, challenges and ground control practices at each of the benchmarked SLC mines. Mine design and sequencing practices adopted for ground control purposes and hazard mitigation are provided with case studies. The impact of depth and rock mass conditions on mining productivity and development rates is also described.

A device is described which is suitable for the automatic sampling of dust in dust laden flue gases. This device, called a Venturi Sampler, consists of two pipes each fitted with a suitably designed venturi.Both pipes are placed in the flue where one acts as an open-ended reference tube and the other as the actual sampling tube.The gas sampling rate is automatically controlled so as to maintain a zero differential pressure between pressure tappings in the two venturi throats. The venturies are so designed that under these conditions the gas velocity in the sampling pipe is always equal to the free gas velocity in the flue-that is isokinetfc sampling conditions are maintained.INTRODUCTIONThere is a constant need in industry for regular and accurate assessments of dust losses, both to assist in improving operating efficiencies in order to minimize losses, and to obtain accurate metallurgical balances. In many cases where sampling is carried out in dust laden gases, the existing sampling methods are both laborious and inaccurate, and often make no provision for changes in flue gas velocity while sampling is in progress.In the majority of cases where a measurement of dust losses in a stack or flue is required, a preliminary velocity survey is made with a pitot tube to establish the gas velocity at each of the points at which samples are to be taken. The sample of gas (and dust) is withdrawn through a tube connected via a flowmeter to an exhausting apparatus. Some means of removing the dust from the gas sample is placed in circuit ahead of the exhausting apparatus. Cook Colliery currently mines in the Argo Seam, beneath old workings in an overlying seam. The Argo seam is up to 4.8 m thick and a continuous haulage system behind an ABM25 is used to develop first workings. Current partial secondary extraction utilises floor stripping and pocketing or sumping first working pillars on retreat. The following paper summarises this recent secondary extraction experience, particularly from a geotechnical perspective, but also considering production and ventilation issues. Outcomes and learnings are presented for mining in this challenging and close multi-seam environment. The sealed castor seam workings are within 20 m, and vary from unmined areas to large first working pillars, to partial extraction panels and full extraction panels. High stress remnant pillars and goaf-edges are notable mining considerations. The mining environment is further complicated by faulting, thrust zones and weak laminated roof.

A unique sluicing process for recovering tailing impounded in a valley was developed by Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd., West Coast Mines, Rosebery, Tasmania.Earthmoving equipment could not be used as most of the material to be recovered was semi-fluid. A conventional sluking method was also impracticable as there was no suitable working face from which the process could be commenced.Operations started from a flat surface, using special techniques for sinking through the tailing and establishing producing working faces as the sinking process continued.After about 2 years the bottom of the dam was reached and conventional sluicing methods could be used.

The rotary drilling of rocks is widespread technology in mining and in tunnelling. The paper describes the results of research by aim to find relationships between optimal drilling and sound signal of drilling machine. The optimisation criterion has been formulated as the minimisation of specific energy with maximal effective speed of drilling in process of the rock disintegration. The research in this field has been made on experimental drilling stand. Our monitoring system has measured following variables: the pressing force of core drill, the revolutions of drilling head, the length of drilling, the time, the power, and the acoustic signals. For measurement of acoustic signals have been used very sensitively sound meter MEDIATOR 2238. From this measurements have been processed acoustic spectrums. Then we are found relationships between optimal control of drilling and composition of acoustic spectrum. On base of experimental results, we can formulate the optimal control following: æTo achieve the minimum difference between the equivalent sound level at the load and idle modes only at the representative frequency (f = 1000 Hz)Æ. The representative frequency dependences on type of the rock New method based on these relationships enables the optimal control of drilling machine by using measured acoustic signals only.

This paper is dedicated to the memory of our friend Peter McKenzie who contributed much to the knowledge of the New South Wales Coalfields.ABSTRACTA fossil river system was recently mapped over parts of the Southern Coalfield, N.S.W. This river system occurs in the roof strata of the Bulli Seam. Sandstone of a fluvial nature was deposited in its course. The sandstone exhibits strong sedimentary vectorial properties and has a marked influence on strata-control in colliery workings.The sedimentary features analysed indicate an approximate S200W flow direction. Petrological studies reveal a clastic, well-cemented sedimentologically and structurally anistropic rock type. Washouts have been found and isopach maps of both sandstone and underlying roof-strata have been compiled. Relevant measurements were carried out in existing colliery workings and on bore cores.Optical determinations of feldspars revealed the presence of plagiocIase feldspars with few exceptions. Most of the feldspars are altered to clay minerals. It was found that a geographical trend exists in the distribution of feldspars, with more basic plagioclase in the northern part of the field.The source area of the fluvial sandstone lies to the north of the Southern Coalfield.Petrofabric analyses were done on several specimens of the fluvial sandstone. In the vicinity of major disturbances, penetrative fabrics were discovered.Calcites (e, 0112), micas (001), and quartz (crystalIo graphic c) show preferred orientations.

The Velvet gold orebody (153 Koz Au) is located near the Kanowna Belle gold deposit in the Boorara Domain of the Kalgoorlie Terrane, a subdivision of the Archaean Eastern Goldfields Superterrane (Swager et al, 1990). Gold mineralisation at Velvet is hosted within an intrusion of intermediate composition that broadly follows a sub vertical hanging wall splay of the Fitzroy Shear Zone.Velvet was discovered in 2003 during an underground exploration drilling program targeting potential strike extensions to the Kanowna Belle deposit. Diamond drill hole KDU1595 returned a downhole intercept of 36 m grading 4.6 ppm Au approximately 500 m west of the deposit and at a vertical depth of 700 m below surface in the immediate hanging wall of the primary Kanowna Belle host structure, the Fitzroy Shear Zone. Subsequent drilling completed following the initial discovery, from both surface and underground collar positions, failed to replicate this result.In 2014, KDU1595 was resurveyed gyroscopically and the mineralised intercept correctly located. Additional drilling was undertaken to follow-up the repositioned discovery hole. Challenges included poor drilling angles through the Fitzroy Shear Zone, excessive deviation during drilling and the unknown geometry of the target. Navigational drilling helped to successfully penetrate the Fitzroy Shear Zone and in April 2015, drill hole KDU3234 returned a significant downhole intercept of 45 m grading 5.6 ppm Au.Additional drilling success resulted in a decision to develop a 600 m drive to serve as a dual-purpose access for further exploration and mining. This was a potential risk considering that the orebody geometry was unknown and all significant drilling results were clustered within a 50 m × 50 m panel. Development commenced in June 2015 and the first ore cut taken in April 2016. Geological mapping and structural interpretation, together with multi-element and spectral analysis of drill samples has enabled several other target areas to be identified for exploration. The Velvet mining area is critical to continued production at Kanowna Belle. Geological understanding must advance as mining progresses to ensure continued resource growth and optimal extraction of reserves.CITATION:Lorusso, G, Rogers, J and Tripp, G, 2017. In general, the metallurgical industry has so far been slower than the chemical industry to adopt ion exchange materials for industrial processes. The atomic energy industry presents a marked exception to this general situation, and the literature shows a rapidly increasing use of ion exchange techniques for the recovery of atomic energy metals on scales ranging from the ultra micro up to that of the largest mining operations. In many cases, the processes used would be equally applicable to more common metals and it is hoped that this review will be of interest to metallurgists outside the specialised atomic energy field. The review is intended to describe developments of ion exchange processes made during the last three years. Earlier studies have been summarised by Kunin and Preuss (1956) and Roland (1957). In order to restrict the number of references discussed, purely analytical procedures have been omitted and only those processes which have been conducted on a reasonably large scale or which, from their nature, areclearly capable of being upscaled, have been considered. This paper presents a three-dimensional analysis of a trapezoidal-shaped segmental tunnel lining for a recent tunnelling project in Sydney. Two- dimensional analyses, hand calculations and equipment selection defined the lining geometry and loads. The analysis, which was undertaken using 3DEC (Itasca), included a complete ring of six segments bolted together to assess the impact of imperfectly built rings. Asymmetry was induced in the analysis by unfavourable positioning of segments within construction tolerances. Model output includes displacement and stress within the entire ring and normal, shear and bending moments at the joints. For the case analysed, the results suggest a 10 mm construction tolerance increases normal and shear stresses along the radial joints by approximately 25 per cent and 15 per cent, respectively and up to a doubling of the induced moments.

In 1976 the Pitjantjatjara Council was established under the Associations Incorporation Act 1985 (SA), for the initial purpose of organising and bringing together three similar Indigenous groups. These members of the Pitjantjatjara Council of Central Australia were demanding land rights and to legally protect their traditional lands. The Land Rights movement was more focused on the South Australian Government that became more receptive to the general notion that Aboriginal freehold land could be attainable.For almost five years, Pitjantjatjara CouncilÆs intense negotiations took place with the Dunstan and Tonkin Governments culminating in the final passage of legislation by 1981. A bi-partisan approach by Government and opposition applauded by all South Australians for its mature and socially responsible actions, in line with the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth). Despite the similarities between South Australian and the Northern Territory Land Rights legislation, there still remains one obvious distinction. In the Northern Territory case, its legislation established æLand CouncilsÆ as statutory authorities that are responsible for the management and use of designated Aboriginal lands. On the other hand, South Australian legislation fails to include any reference to æLand CouncilsÆ as defined in the Northern Territory Act. The intention of establishing such æLand CouncilsÆ in the Northern Territory was, and is to provide legal, anthropological and other expect advisers that respond to the wishes and opinions of Traditional Aboriginal Owners. Negotiations between mining companies and Land Councils, will, after the granting of mining leases, monies are then transferred to those Councils being a percentage of royalty entitlements. While the Pitjantjatjara Land Rights Act 1981 (SA) (Act) does provide royalty arrangements to Anangu Pitjantjatjara (AP), a body corporate pursuant to the Act as a Landholding Body (and not as a æLand CouncilÆ), it does not provide any royalty payments for the legal and anthropological services by the Pitjantjatjara Council for providing essentially similar services as the Northern Territory Land Councils. The limited services by AP do provide complimentary services from other organisations û including the Pitjantjatjara Council. There are approximately 4000 Anangu members who reside on AP Lands and more than 1000 other Anangu members live near AP Lands in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. These people are defined as APÆs æTraditional OwnersÆ by virtue of their affiliation to portions of AP Lands. As a result, the depth and understanding of spiritual beliefs and customs are strongly present as it relates to the whole of the Lands. Most of these members reside at permanent communities that spread unevenly about the northern and south-western parts of AP Lands. In addition, there are numerous æHomelandsÆ where families and extended families have establish homes, with electricity and water supplies on those Traditional Lands (see Appendix 1 and 2 of this paper depicting the map showing AP Lands and also showing stunning photographs taken during late last year). All roads and airstrips are unsealed between communities and Homelands and the essential services to all communities are limited and costly to provide, and require continuous upgrading. Capital expenditure on infrastructure is sorely needed and alarming levels of unemployment is of serious concern. Tjilpi (older) Anangu members have continually discuss the urgency to provide employment and education for the future of their children and grandchildren while balancing the needs of maintaining cultural and spiritual considerations. It is thus a growing realisation by many Traditional Owners that long-term benefits occur as a result of exploration and production of oil or minerals. There are promising results from Primary Industry and Resources of South AustraliaÆs (PIRSA) Aero-magnetic Surveys on the Musgrave and Mann Ranges and soon to be completed surveys of the remaining southern half of AP Lands (see Appendix 3). PIRSA and mining companies û such as Rio Tinto Exploration Pty Ltd and Delta Gold NL û have been more conscious of the necessity for improving the dissemination of information to Traditional Owners and to AP members. With recent findings of large nickel deposits just over the border in Western Australia, there is a strong indication that discoveries may occur on AP Lands as similar geological information is present on the east Musgrave Block. Consequently there are concerted efforts by the legal and anthropological services of the Pitjantjatjara Council to arrange Workshops and Summit meeting to give extra information û particularly information concerning the true effect of large-scale mining operations û to members to properly consider these proposals. Pitjantjatjara Council will play a major role in any decisions effecting Traditional Owners and AP, and will ensure orderly and professional services when dealing with legal, cultural and sensitive matters. This paper addresses the historical and current relationship between Pitjantjatjara Council and AP, with an emphasis on mining operations on AP Lands. It argues that future economic and social development on AP Lands hinge predominantly on the legal recognition of the Pitjantjatjara Council for its ongoing role, responsibilities and protection afforded to AP and its Traditional Owners.

Whilst the wider community is both a large consumer of mineral products and relies on mineral exports for much of the wealth which sustains it, the community generally has a poor perception of the minerals industry.   The role of professionals and The AusIMM in the "New Economy" minerals industry is reviewed. The new structure of The Institute is vital as we move forward in times of globalisation, rationalism, increasing litigation, criminalisation of risk and increased focus on corporate governance. This address looks forward to ways The AusIMM and professionals of the future are positioning themselves for these and other challenges.
