The study of the plastic deformation and recrystallization of metals has been the subject of many investigations. In regard to the simple deformational processes, such as tension and compression, the early knowledge gained from studies of polycrystalline material has been supplemented by many significant researches on the behavior of single crystals. Unfortunately, this has not been true for more complicated deformational processes. As far back as 1927, G. I. Taylor1 wrote: It is impossible in the present state of knowledge to do more than give a possible reason why (face-centered cubic) crystals set themselves with a (110) direction in the plane of rolling, and at right angles to the direction of rolling. The explanation of why the orientation of the crystal axes round the transverse direction is what it is, must be left till the distortion of metals, and particularly single crystals of metals in the process of rolling, has been studied in greater detail. That this gap in the systematic study of deformation and recrystallization has not yet been filled was indicated by C. H. Samans, who wrote in 1934 that "only four investigations upon cold-rolled single crystals of any of the face-centered cubic metals have been reported in the literature." Of these four studies, only those of S. Tanaka3 and T. Sakaoj4 both of whom worked with aluminum crystals, had quantitative significance. The other two, carried out by F. Wever5 and W. G. Burgers16 were of a qualitative nature. It is our hope that the present investigation may contribute something to the knowledge necessary for a rationalization of the origin of rolling textures in terms of the known behavior of single crystals, and may add pertinent information concerning the recrystallization characteristics of deformed single crystals.

THE history of the froth flotation of coal is relatively short. The flotation process was applied to fine-coal cleaning about the time of the end of World War I. Coal flotation finds more widespread use in Europe than in the United States and is used on a commercial scale in nearly all major coal-producing countries in the world. In Fig. 1 the general arrangement of a froth-flotation plant at a British colliery is shown. GENERAL FEATIJIEES OF THE PROCESS Application The flotation process is applicable to the cleaning of the fine sizes, particularly minus 48-mesh coal, although it may be used on sizes as coarse as 1/8 in. Since most cleaning processes usually are not effective on sizes smaller than 48-mesh and certainly not effective on minus 100- mesh, the froth-flotation process offers a solution to the problem of cleaning these sizes. This process consists-of agitating the feed pulp with a small amount of reagents, usually 1.0 to 2 ½ lb. per ton of feed in the presence of water and air; the reagents help to form small bubbles that collect on the particles having a greater affinity for the bubble surface than for the water surface, in this case the fine coal, and the bubbles buoy these particles to the surface to form the frothor concentrate. Slate and shale particles remain wetted and suspended in the water to be drawn off as tailing. The frothers commonly used in coal flotation are cresylic acid, pine oil, and alcohols. More expensive frothers, used in ore flotation, work satisfactorily but do not compare with these cheaper reagents for over-all cost. Collectors- used are low-grade petroleum fractions, such as cheap, partly refined fuel oil, or lubricating oil, sometimes mixed with small amounts of kerosene. With the rapid development of Canadian industries calling for the use of fire-brick for the lining of furnaces or cement-kilns, for constructing brick-kilns or coke-ovens, for lead-furnaces, etc., the question has often arisen whether the provirices within the Dominion have not the necessary raw materials for the manufacture of such refractory wares. As an indication for the need of such products in Canada, me find that the imports in 1910 amounted in value to $519,454. The materials came in part from Great Britain, and part from the United States. Those supplied by the latter country are obtained largely from Pennsylvania and Ohio, and when shipped to distant points, such as British Columbia, the item of transportation is a serious factor. Scotch fire-brick is used both in eastern and western Canada, but in the latter case the shipments are made by water route to Vancouver. During the past four years I have been investigating the clay-deposits of Canada, for the Canadian Geological Survey, and while all types of clay have been included in the study, special pains have been taken to ascertain the occurrence of refractory clays. As a result of this work we are able to report on the existence of beds of refractory clays at the followiug localities: Inverness and Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia; St. Remi, d'Amherst, Quebec; Dirt Hills and Cypress Hills, Saskatchewan; Sumas Mountain, near Clayburn, B. C., and Kyuquot, on northwestern Vancouver Island. A map of Canada, showing the fire-clay deposits, is given in Fig. 1. It is possible that other deposits may be discovered in the future in districts remotely located from the present lines of railroad.

DURING the past 4 or 5 years, much has been added to the detailed geologic knowledge of the Mesabi Range. This has not been in the direction of discovery of any new fundamental facts, but of detailed study, subdivision and correlation of different parts of the whole formation and of individual orebodies. Prior to this time, mining engineers in the district were so engaged with the commercial interests of exploring and developing orebodies that close geologic study and subdivision was done in only a few instances. The demand for refinements of work in this direction has caused caused extensive structural subdivision and correlation to he done in all exploration work during the past 4 years by the engineers of the Oliver Iron Mining Co. Such work has become a commercial necessity rather than a scientific refinement, and at the present time is being extended to all parts of the Range. In the summer of 1914, the author of this paper wrote a series of articles on the orebodies and special features of the Mesabi Range, which was published in the Engineering and Mining Journal, issues of July 17 to Aug. 7, 1915. Since that time studies of subdivision of the iron-formation have been extended considerably. The principle feature of this paper is the presentation of the subdivisions of the iron-formation. To this is added a discussion of the relations of the orebodies to the gentle folding and fracturing of the formation, and special features of the Range. The outline will he as follows: I. General geology. II. Subdivision of Biwabik iron-formation. III. Relation of orebodies to folding and fracturing of the iron-formation. IV. Special features. Acknowledgment is due to W. J. A stability criterion for a lamellar eutectic interface was derived previously1 assuming that the wavelength, A,. of the perturbation which grows most rapidly is much larger than the lamellar spacing. A. This assumption was required to permit averaging of both the interface temperature and composition over the complicated geometry of a lamellae. If this assumption is invalid, as has been suggested.2,3 then the problem becomes too complicated to solve completely. The first of these analyses1 did not calculate the wavelength. A,. of the initially unstable perturbation. whereas the more recent analysis.' which led to a contradiction of this assumption. did not include one of the key factors for determining this wavelength. To rigorously determine the wavelength, the effect of the curvature of the perturbed interface (not considered by either of the above treatments) must be included. By omitting this term, one would be led to an incorrect conclusion regarding the magnitude of A,. but to an accurate criterion for stability as evidenced by the excellent agreement with experimental observations.' In the case of single-phase alloys. the critical wavelength. A,. for instability can be calculated from the Mullins and Sekerka4 (M.S.) analysis which includes the effects of capillarity. In the following discussion, the M.S. analysis is applied to lamellar eutectics and the critical wavelengths calculated for reasonable growth conditions in Pb-Sn eutectic alloys. In order to apply the M.S. analysis to eutectics. one may substitute i) the effective liquidus slope.1 m*. for the single-phase liquidus slope and ii) the ratio of the bulk alloy composition. (Read at the Philadelphia Meeting, February, 1878.) THE manufacture of ferromanganese in the blast furnace having been the subject of considerable attention in the Institute, I beg to put on record a contribution to the discussion from a quarter hitherto not directly represented, namely, the St. Louis furnaces, near Marseilles in France, belonging to a company of which M. Jordan, a member of the Institute, is Managing Director. These furnaces commenced in 1862 to manufacture specular pig (fontes à facettes) containing from three to six per cent. of manganese. In 1864 the regular production of spiegeleisen (fontes miroitantes), containing seven to ten per cent, of manganese, was inaugurated. At that time the Rhine was the only locality of this manufacture, and the Bessemer works of England and France obtained from Germany all their spiegel. From 1864 to the present time, the St. Louis furnaces have been advancing steadily the percentage of manganese in their product. From ferromanganese of thirty per cent. they had arrived, about two years ago, at a product containing seventy to seventy-five per cent., and for some time past they have been turning out what, as M. Jordan remarks, may fairly be termed fonte de manganese, or manganese pig, instead of iron, since the percentage of iron it contains is not more than 8.5, while the percentage of manganese is 85, or ten times as great. This very high grade material has a peculiar appearance, entirely different from that of ordinary cast iron or spiegel. It is granular, and steely gray in color. The following analyses, communicated to the Société to des Ingenieurs Oivils, by M. Jordan, show the composition of various products of the St. Louis furnaces :

F. M. Lewis—I believe that density recorders are a prerequisite to all well operated ore concentrators. Well designed density instruments are very accurate and give an excellent record of the steadiness of the operation. Controlling the density of a pulp with an instrument, as described by Mr. Bean, is new and the experiences in developing this controller at the American Cyanimid Co.'s Mineral Dressing Laboratory are very interesting and should be extremely helpful to others who are planning on designing or installing controlling density instruments. Instruments for recording the density of the classifier overflow or flotation feed are rather common in ore concentrators, but there are a number of profitable uses for these instruments that are not too well known. Density recorders with bubble tubes submerged to different depth in a classifier pool give an excellent record of the classifier operation. The loading and unloading of the machine, that is so easily masked in the density of the overflow, can be easily recorded if the instrument is installed at some depth in the classifier pool. On some occasions, two instruments with bubble tubes at different depths give a more candid picture of the irregularities in the classifier operation. When cleaner machines are operated in closed circuit with roughers, a record of the density of the cleaner tails will indicate the circulating load in the circuit and is very helpful in coordinating different operators, because quite often the circulating load will be increasing for some time before the analyses of the products will change. Density recorders are used to record the variations in the dilution of the underflow from thickening tanks and in at least one plant the instrument controls the underflow.

I would like to commend the author on his description of Pinto Valley's plant, and its interesting innovations. The author's discussion of 18 ft in diameter by 21 ft long primary ball mills (the largest wet ball mills made to date) is of considerable importance to those who have been engaged in the field of studying ball mill liner wear as it relates to various grinding installations. While it is stated that the mills have operated on a fixed tonnage and therefore it has been difficult to determine the best liner pattern, calculations from the data in the paper indicates that for mills 1, 2, 5, and 6, the tonnage per hour varies from a low of 223 for mill No. 1, up to a high of 314, for mill No. 2, while mills 5 and 6 calculate 285 and 246, respectively. Analysis of the wear patterns for the single wave liners used in mill No. 1 as compared to the double wave liners in mill No. 2, suggests that the author's data may tell more than he suspects about liner wear to be expected and thus what should be a best pattern selection from what may appear to be only limited hours of operation. [Fig. A] is a reproduction of author's [Fig. 10], to which wear forecast patterns [F-1 and F-2] have been added. Forecasts are based on many previous studies of large diameter ball mill operations over many years of field service. Calculations from the first-wear pattern provide an initial wear rate of only 13 lb of liner per 100 sq ft of shell liner surface per day, or 0.031 lb per to: ground. IN a recent article,1 the authors reported the results of an X-ray investigation on the range of solid solutions that occurs in the iron-oxygen system in the vicinity of the compound FeO, which frequently is called "Wüstite." The object of that investigation was primarily to study the unusual type of solid solution phenomena involved in this range. Briefly summarized the results were: 1. The NaCl type of lattice found by earlier workers was confirmed. 2. The lattice dimensions decrease rapidly with decrease in iron content. 3. No alloy that was a homogeneous single phase was ever found at compositions beyond 76.80 per cent Fe, while the theoretical iron content of FeO is 77.73 per cent Fe. 4. Measurements of the densities and lattice constants led to the conclusion that the form of substitution was complex, an FeO group being replaced by oxygen. Such a substitution, of course, is equivalent to removing an iron atom (or ion). The ideal unit cell of FeO can be con-sidered as containing four groups of FeO and, thus, when this type of substitution takes place, there remain in the unit cell three FeO groups and an oxygen, or a total of seven atoms with a gross formula of Fe304 instead of the original Fe404. 5. This was the only interpretation that would fit the experimental results and at the same time be consistent with (a) the previously deter-mined fact that the FeO lattice is ionic (i. e., consists of Fe++ and 0= ions) and (b) the chemical fact that as the oxygen content of the substance increases, ferrous iron becomes oxidized to ferric iron. The experimental results of this investigation are included in Fig. 1.

Many investigations have shown that the manganese enhances the deoxidation power of silicon. Here it is suggested that this phenomenon could be explained in terms of the formation of impure silica. Data of Hilty and Crafts on the Fe-Mn-Si-O System has been evaluated on the basis of the reaction S_i + 20 = (SiO2) where (SiO2) denotes silica of variable activity. The activity of silica in this system is a function of aMn/aSi and the temperature, and can be described by the equation 12700 l°gaSiOz = -6.85+ - - 0.5 log aMn /asi PRACTICAL melting experience has shown that it is helpful to maintain a certain range of Mn/Si ratio in deoxidizing quality alloy steels. Herty,1 as early as 1932, reported a strong association between manganese and silicon as did schenck2 and Korber and Oelsen3 in later work. More recently, Hilty and crafts4 have studied the solubility of oxygen in the Fe-Si-O system, both with and without manganese. Their study confirmed the marked ability of manganese to increase the deoxidizing power of silicon. This phenomenon has remained unexplained in the liter,ature5 since it has been shown that manganese has virtually no influence on the activity coefficients of silicon or oxygen.= In this paper, an explanation for the role of manganese is suggested and equations are devised for quantitatively describing this influence. DISCUSSION Hilty and crafts4 equilibrated their melts under an argon atmosphere and the system established equilibrium with a self-generated slag which was not always the oxide of lowest free energy. INTRODUCTION The development of refining processes involving gas injection into liquid metals has seen the evolution of a variety of designs [I]. During the last few years or so the top, bottom and side blown processes have, essentially, been combined to produce a series of mixed gas blowing schemes (eg. the LBE [2,3] and LD-OB processes [4,5]). Although, a variety of mixed gas blowing processes have been carefully engineered and recorded operational experience now attests to their effectiveness, optimising their design and operational performance is another matter. Detailed process analysis of such operations is impeded by the complex nature of the physical and chemical processes involved: . fluid flow behaviour of the liquid metal and injected gases, . chemical reactions in the vessel, . mass and heat transfer within the fluid phases in the vessel, . influence of the geometry (eg. location of the tuyeres, etc.), . monitoring the operational performance. By and large, design and operating parameters evolve from a combination of laboratory scale experiments, pilot plant work and, of course, practical engineering experience. Conventionally, the gas-liquid system used to model the industrial process is air-water, for a number of valid reasons including – . visual demonstration plus geometric and (to some extent) dynamic similarity, . the fact that the system demonstrates, at least, qualitatively many of the complex features of gas injection - interaction between the gas and the liquid - the nature of the gas flow behaviour - qualitative indications of mass transfer rates Important experimental contributions to the understanding of gas liquid systems include the work of Brimacombe [6], Wraith [7], T.Robertson [8], D.Robertson [9], Guthrie [10] and Szekely [11] (these references provide starting points to identify the major published work in this area). Although air-water systems have been instrumental in providing a great deal of qualitative insight into the fluid flow behaviour of the processes, reliable quantitative predictions are more problematic. A number of workers (notably Brimacombe and colleagues [6, 12])have demonstrated that different gas-liquid systems can lead to wide variations in behaviour. Other limitations of physical modelling include the assumptions of isothermal flow, scale- up of turbulent flow behaviour and the inability to directly include the effects of chemical reactions. The above limitations in physical modelling, therefore, yield a natural role for mathematical modelling provided that it can be made comprehensive enough whilst remaining cost-effective. The major physical processes involved in gas injection systems may be summarised as . behaviour of the gas envelope structure in moving through the liquid metal . the global movement of the liquid metal . momentum interaction between the liquid metal and the injected gas . heat transfer and mass exchange via the chemical react ions. The behaviour of gas envelopes forming at a tuyere and then moving through the liquid has been investigated thoroughly by a large number of workers. Such models are generally based upon simple physic- al concepts derived from visual observation. An early model by Davidson and Schuler (DS), based upon a force balance between the liquid inertia and a combination of the bouyancy and momentum forces on the envelope, has proved to be a useful tool in predicting bubble volumes at detachment [13]. The DS model has been successfully modified in a number of ways [14-17] to cope with heat transfer and reactive transfer rates, etc. Furthermore, the basic ideas summarised above have also been confirmed on industrial converters by both Guthrie [I8] and Brimacombe [19]. Models have also been developed to predict the behaviour of the "chemical" component of some gas-liquid systems. However, one thing is clear; all gas-liquid reactive systems are governed by the degree to which effective mixing occurs. As such, the processes are dominated by the behaviour of the heat and mass exchange of the two phase fluid flow system. Although the earliest use of rubber-tired haulage was in Illinois in 1936, the first unit of this type of equipment used in West Virginia was shipped into the state in 1938. All units placed in West Virginia mines have been of the shuttle-car type. The Katherine Coal Mining Co., at Lumberport, W. Va., was the second company in the United States to install shuttle cars and the Gay Coal and Coke Co., at Mt. Gay, W. Va., was the first company in the country to install the thin-bed type of shuttle car. On Oct. 8, 1940, nine companies in the state were using 41 shuttle cars, of which 10 cars at three mines were of the thin-bed type. All shuttle cars of the low type were in the southern fields and all of the high type were in northern West Virginia. At that time several units were in the process of delivery. The data in this paper were collected in the field by Mr. Schroder in connection with graduate work on mechanical loading of coal in West Virginia by mobile loaders. In the course of his field work he visited five mines in the state that were using shuttle cars. All of these mines were in high-volatile coal beds of strong structure. The more pertinent data obtained at the mines visited are given in Table I. The maximum distance of shuttle-car haul is the distance between the transfer station and the farthermost place. Tonnage per loading unit per foot of bed thickness is to some degree a measure of relative efficiency, especially if the different operations are working the same bed or have somewhat similar conditions. THE idea of economical production is usually associated with large operations, tonnages, and mines, with even larger capital behind them. Nevertheless many small mines operate in the shadow of large competitors and make a good showing on the capital invested despite larger overhead expenses. For the purpose of this discussion I will divide the cost of production into classes, and specify opposite each the approximate percentage expended thereon: 1. Labor, including miners and company men; 60 to 75 per cent. 2: Development, including all necessary yardage, room turning, crosscuts, etc.; 7 to 12 per cent. 3. Deadwork, covering payment to miners for handling falls, drawslate, or faults, rock work, water, and in general, all nonproductive labor; 3 to 7 per cent. 4. Supplies: mine timbers, oil, brattice material, lumber, cement, and repairs to equipment; 2 to 6 per cent. 5. Expense: management, selling, office, taxes, etc.; 1 to 5 per cent. 6. Depreciation of coal reserves and royalties; 6 to 10 per cent. 7. Depreciation of equipment and interest on capital invested; 1 to 3 per cent. 8. Fuel; ½ to 1 ½ per cent. The labor cost for a small mine is relatively much lower than for a large mine, particularly the sum paid to company men. Idle-pay expense is cut to a minimum; the labor item being larger than all the others together, a saving in labor makes a decided showing on the total cost. The development charges in small and large mines are about the same. There should be a small showing on the Beadwork item in favor of the small mine. The unit cost for supplies is usually small in the small mine. The operator of the small mine finds, owing to a limited tonnage, that the expenses of management, selling, etc., are abnormally high.

THE year 1923 has seen new developments in the only French wells, i.e., those of Pechelbronn, Alsace. The output of the two pits now in operation totaled more than 75,000 tons, although there was a two months' strike. It is expected that 1924 will see an output of 85,000 tons; and 1925, 100,000 tons. A new pit has just been put in operation (fourth pit; the third not being in operation). The oil and the oil sands are extracted at a depth of 350 meters. Special attention has been given to the development of the distillation and refinery plants, particularly the manufacturing of lubricating oils. The present output of the lubricating-oil factories is approximately 20,000 tons neutral oils; 20,000 tons spindle oils, together with 2000 tons of paraffin. Engineers are introducing the most modern American processes of refinery and distillation. The company has 3000 employees. The capital of the company has just been increased from 45,000,000 francs to 81,000,000 francs. Some other drilling has been done in the Auvergne and Landes districts, and some oil has been found, but in too small quantities for commercial operation. Great hopes, however, are entertained of finding large quantities of oil, and the French Chambers have voted a special fund of 20,000,000 francs for investigating oil in France. Much work has also been done in the Colonies but without much success; oil is found in different districts of Tunis, but in relatively small quantities. In Morocco, drillings have not been successful. A prospecting mission recently returned from Madagascar gave an optimistic report concerning the oil conditions on the Island. Prospectings are being made also in French Indo-China. The present domestic yearly consumption is about: Gasoline 750,000 metric tons, kerosene 70,000 metric tons, automobile lubricating oil 75,000 metric tons.

The solid solubility of lithium in aluminum was determined by two independent techniques, electrical resistivity and microhardness, and the results are in close agreement. The solubility limits X-ray diffraction studies of the intermetallic compound LiAl indicate that its composition is nearly independent of temperature when in equilibrium with the terminal solid solution of aluminum. THE investigation of the aluminum-rich portion of the aluminum-lithium system at the Savannah River Laboratory was prompted by the observation that over-aged alloys consistently differed from the equilibrium states predicted by the latest published diagrams. Chemical analyses of these alloys showed their impurity contents to be quite low; therefore, the results obtained should have very nearly coincided with true equilibrium. A survey of the literature disclosed that previous studies had been made with metallographicig or electrical resistivity methods,4'5 but that agreement between results and technique was poor as evidenced in Fig. 1, which also includes the present results for comparison. The discrepancies have been attributed to impurities,3 and this is undoubtedly true in the early work.1'4'5 The latest Studies,''~ conducted with starting materials of higher purity, employed metallographic analysis, a technique that is quite sensitive to local homogeneity and depends strongly on subjective interpretation. In the present work the problem of defining solubility limits was approached in two ways. The first measured a physical property, electrical resistivity, at the equilibrium temperature. The second, a micro-hardness characterization of a diffusion zone, is a room temperature evaluation of a mechanical property under conditions removed from equilibrium. A close correlation between two such basically different approaches would strongly justify confidence in the results. Will the nickel oxide affect the rate of corrosion in a double sulfate solution; or will the nickel oxide dissolve in a double sulfate solution? I would also like to ask whether a 98 per cent. pure nickel anode will corrode as fast as a 96 per cent. nickel anode; whether electrolytic nickel will corrode less rapidly than nickel containing a small amount of carbon; and whether the materials some-times used in coating molds for casting nickel anodes will affect the rate of corrosion of the anode? In other words, whether an electrically non conducting coating is likely to be present that will prevent the nickel anode from corroding rapidly. JOHN F. THOMPSON.-The nickel oxide will not dissolve in the double sulfate solution, as far as we know. We do not make the ordinary nickel anode of commerce, but we supply nickel to the nickel anode makers. Those makers almost invariably buy a high-carbon nickel shot, ranging around 0.45 per cent. carbon. In their process, they even further, car-burize it so as to get nickel that will melt easily and be fluid enough to fill the mold, so that the ordinary cast anode on the market is unquestion-ably oxide free. The only time that such an anode will have oxide will be through an error in melting. Some cupola makers of anodes have had trouble with oxidation, but as a rule the anodes are thoroughly carburized; so much so that they probably carry a couple of per cent. of carbon of which around. 1.6 per cent. is graphite.
