Low-temPeRatUre carbonization needs no introduction to the literature on coal. This paper will attempt no review of that literature; it tells the story of the commercial development of one of the processes for carbonizing coal at so-called low temperatures, dealing with the technology and economics of the process rather than with the design of equipment. The process used is that covered by the patents of C. B. Wisner, with improvements and changes made by the Pittsburgh Coal Carbonization Co. The important and novel feature of the process is the phenomenon of making the product in ball form (Fig. 1). Melting coal dust into smokeless solid fuel in an apparatus as simple as a revolving cylinder of ordinary mild steel has been proved to be practical. Furthermore, it has been found that the process has a wide application, for by applying a knowledge of why and how this balling action is accomplished, the apparatus can be designed and adapted to treat any coal that has a certain minimum agglutinating property. The operating plant is 20 miles west of Pittsburgh, adjacent to the Champion preparation plant of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. The coal used is cleaned minus ?-in. or finer sizes. The products are low-tem-perature coke, tar and tar products. Present capacity is 7000 tons per month of low-temperature coke and 140,000 gal. of tar. There is no surplus gas for sale, and none of the light oils are stripped from the gas. The coke is marketed in two sizes, 1 to 2 in. and 1 to 6 in., through retail coal dealers for domestic consumption in hand-fired furnaces, and for fireplace fuel. The smaller size is bagged by dealers. Crude tar and many distillates and road tars are sold. It has been found that sulfur can be more easily removed in racunm than in hydrogen and thai this process was hindered by the prescrzce of INCLUSIONS play an essential role in the development of cube-on-edge texture in Si-Fe. Their function consists in restraining the growth of primary grains up to about 900°C and in passing subsequently into solution at higher temperatures. This process is accompanied by the selective growth of secondary grains with (110)[001] orientation. The general effect of inclusions depends on such factors as the type of impurities, their amount. dispersion and stability, the conditions of diffusion in the space of lattice of metal, and the reactions at the metal/gas interface. In recent years, some of these factors were the subject of a special investigation. A positive influence of Mns, siN,' and vN3 has been established. The quantity of impurities4 and their dispersion5 have been found to be of major importance. Attention was called to the vital importance of diffusion and the conditions under which the impurities are removed from metal., It has also been demonstrated that in Fe-Si alloys by the techniques of powder metallurgy a special opportunity exists to obtain the (110)[001] type texture. 6 The aim of this work was to conduct qualitative investigations on the influence of inclusion stability on the development of cube-on-edge texture in a metal containing approximately 3 pct Si. Experiments were carried out on cast alloys and on those manufactured by powder-metallurgy techniques. The results obtained from these experiments were utilized to explain the phenomena involved and to analyze the relationships between stable and unstable inclusions and the magnetic properties of alloys. EXPERIMENTS AND RESULTS The raw materials used in these experiments were the powder of carbonyl iron with the analysis (in pct) 0.044 C, 0.01 Mn, 0.005 Si, 0.009 P, 0.002 S, traces of Cu, 0.06 Ni, 0.0015 Al, 0.03 Cr, 0.02 Mo, 0.01 Ti, 0.002 Co, traces of Pb, and the powder of silicon containing 94.14 Si, 0.003 S, 0.048 C. The powders were ground and mechanically mixed in 100-g batches. and then pressed at 9 tons per sq cm into 74 by 24 by 8 mm blocks. Sintering was carried out at 1100°C for 12 hr in vacuum (2 x lo-' Tr) or in hydrogen. In this instance the material was heated slowly and subjected to prolonged soaking at 350°, 650°, and 750 2C, respectively, to secure reduction of ferro-oxides. This was checked by making measurements of the dew point, which was found to change from -15" to -35°C after reduction. The compacts after sintering were hot-rolled to 2.4 mm, annealed at 800 C, and finally cold-reduced to 0.35 mm with intermediate annealing at 800°C at a gage of about 0.8 mm. THE orientation relationships resulting from allotropic transforma-tions and the formation of segregate structures in metals and alloys have been the subject of the eight earlier papers in this series1. A brief summary of orientation studies has also been given by Sachs2. A survey of these papers discloses that the factors that determine the orientation relationship of a precipitated phase to its parent solid solution, as Well as the outward form and appearance of the new phase, are not completely understood. It is now evident that crystallographically analogous systems, as a rule, exhibit the same type of Widmanstätten figure and orientation relations, so that useful information is not to be expected from examination of a new alloy involving lattice combinations of which the orientation relationships are already known. Therefore, the determina-tion of the relations existing between lattice types that have not already been studied seems to be the most promising mode of attack upon the problem; both of the systems reported in this paper represent new com-binations of lattice types.

Phase changes in as-cast alloys in the Ni2 CoCr-Ni, Ti-NSAl system containing 0.1 wt pct C were studied after heat treatment at 1650°F. It was found that a vegion of CrCo-type s was developed in this system after I1000 hr. The tendency for s formation was dePendent upon the aluminum and litanium content, the s -forming tendency generally becoming more pro-nounced as the latter two elements are increased. s lended to form in interdendritic regioues and was associated with solutioning- of- carbide phases. Electron- vacancy computations for prediction of s formation on these alloys mere in sufficient agreement with what was observed experimentally to indicate that the method should be of value in assessing a-forming potential in cast alloys. However, the correlation of electrotz- vacancy numbers may not be as favorable in cast as cormpared to wrought alloys. THE increasing use of high-temperature alloys for longer times at higher temperatures has resulted in a real need for obtaining information on the phase changes taking place in these alloys since these changes often have a direct effect on properties. This paper reports on a study of the phase changes in Ni-Cr-Co-Al-Ti alloys after prolonged heating at 1650°F. The alloys were selected from the pseudo-ternary system Ni2CoCr-Ni3Ti-Ni3Al and this system was chosen because it is the basis of many of the newer cast commercial superalloys. The attempt here was not to define accurately the boundaries of s formation in the NizCoCr-Ni3Ti-Ni3Al system but to delineate the phase transformations taking place upon heating alloys covering a wide range of chemistries in this system. An addition of carbon was made to all alloys to further simulate commercial alloys. It was hoped that the information generated in this manner would be of more direct use to superalloy designers than an equilibrium diagram approach since commercial alloys generally have outlived their usefulness when equilibrium is attained. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were vacuum-melted from carbonyl-nickel pellet, vacuum-grade chromium, electrolytic cobalt, high-purity aluminum and titanium, and spec-trographic-grade carbon.

The flexure of geologic strata, a phenomenon of interest to geologists and mining engineers alike, is examined as a sheet bending problem in Coulomb plasticity. Fonnulae for the distribution of stress, strain, and displacement increments; volume change; change in the length of the central surface; and power of dissipation, as well as for the neutral surface shift are given. Strains of any magnitude are considered. The analysis shows that deeply buried strata may bend and develop "tensile" cracks under generally compressive states of stress. It is also shown that bed separation and high capacity props are desirable in mechanized longwall mining, a result in keeping with operating experience. Although speculative at this time, the analysis provides a rational working hypothesis as regards the problem of strata flexure and control. | he purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the flexure of geologic strata as a problem in the bending of a sheet of material failing in accordance with a Mohr-Coulomb criterion. The flexure of strata has an obvious academic interest to the geologist concerned with the mechanics of folding. It is of interest to the economic geologist as it relates to the structural control of certain types of ore deposits. It has an intimate association with mine subsidence phenomena, and is of concern to the mining engineer. Strata flexure is also the dominant feature of roof behavior about longwall workings. An improved understanding of strata flexure through a rational mechanical analysis thus appears desirable not only from the academic view but from the economic one as well. In the field, the most commonly observed feature of folding, subsidence, and longwall roof behavior is the permanent and therefore inelastic nature of the strata movement. Fig. 1 illustrates the physical disposition of strata in the vicinity of a longwall face. Inasmuch as most rocks (with the possible exception of certain evaporites) do not exhibit significant viscoelastic behavior, at least not over time spans of engineering interest, a plastic analysis is indicated. The analysis is meant to apply to strata whose deformation is dominantly that of bending such as might be expected in the remote roof about a longwall face.

The early work of Terzaghi1 showed that the true stress state of a rock can be expressed by the principle of effective stress. This principle states that effective stress is equal to total applied stress minus the pore pressure. Since the introduction of this principle, a great effort has been made to measure the pore pressure of rocks so that the true stress state can be determined. For clean, permeable sandstones, it is usually found that the effective stress principle can easily be applied. Direct measurement of the pore pressure is achieved with a hydraulic pressure device and the effective stress state thereby computed. However, for fine-grained rocks which contain large amounts of clay (referred to herein as shales), pore pressure measurements are usually quite difficult because of the adsorptive forces of the clay platelets, which produce negative internal pressures. No suitable device is known for measuring internal pressures of dry shales; the effective stress approach is therefore not feasible and data are usually presented in another form. As an example, data from compressive strength tests are presented as a function of rock wetness, rather than effective confining stress. The work of Belopoloskii2 and Colback and Wiid3 are examples of such data. It was pointed out by Lambe and Whitman4 that a better way must be found to express the effective stress of argillaceous rocks. The information presented herein is an attempt to fill that need. Various authors have been able to measure moderate negative pore pressures (0-240 psi) within rather wet, argillaceous rocks by means of various pore pressure devices. In 1961 Lambe5 resented information which shows that pore pressures in argillaceous rocks are indeed negative ; he presented values of suction pressure as low as - 14 psi. Likewise,

The Evergreen mine, located at Apex, in the northern part of Gilpin county, Colorado, has opened a very peculiar and interesting copper-deposit, in which both bornite and chalcopyrite occur as rock-minerals. The country-rocks are crystalline schists cut by dikes of granu-lite and of pegmatite. At the Evergreen property they have been cut by a dike of a uew kind of eruptive rock, to which I have given the name " Evergreenite." The rock is composed of quartz, alkali feldspars, orthoclase and albite (often interlocked as microperthite), with augite of the ægirine variety and long needles of enstatite and diallage. For reasons stated below, I believe the dike to be of Tertiary age. It is easily traced on the surface of the ground, from a point in the bottom of Pine creek, about a mile below Apex, to the top of Nevada hill, 1,500 ft. beyond and 600 ft. above it. (See Fig. 1.) It varies from 3 to 12 ft. in width, and is bounded on both sides by contact-zones about 60 ft. wide, in which the crystalline schists have been changed into pseudo-quartzites or pseudo-gneisees, according to the injection of an excess of quartz or of feldspars through the special layer of the schists. The most interesting feature is the presence of the pyroxenes, which are always found, though in very variable proportions from place to place, in the layers of these metamorphosed crystalline schists. The dike has torn from its walls a large number of fragments of the wall-rock. It must have been in a viscous state when that happened, because these fragments of the wall-rock do not show any sign of resorption or of assimilation by the magma. In places they are so distinct and so numerous that the rock looks to the naked eye like a pseudo-breccia, of which, never-

DURING the summer of 1916, while on a visit to the United States Agricultural Experiment Station at Mayaguez, Porto Rico, the writers were told by D. W. May, the director, that an occurrence of manganese ore had been reported from the mesa southeast of Mayaguez. A visit to the locality showed that the mesa is covered by a mantle of bright red soil resting upon serpentine. On account of the similarity of this occurrence to the extensive iron deposits of northeastern Cuba, it was thought that a brief description based upon a two days' reconnaissance survey of the area would be of scientific interest. The shank, to give good service, should not upset nor should it cause excessive wear on the various parts of the machine. To fulfill these requirements, the steel must have a certain hardness—that is, resistance to deformation. The hardness is expressed in conventional terms, as Brinell or scleroscope number. Before deciding on the hardness that is proper, several factors should be considered; the most important are: type of drill steel used (whether hollow or solid), length of steel, nature of ground, air pressure, and hardness of hammer or anvil block (usually 600 Brinell). These are not all, but they are the most cogent ones. Without doubt, it would be better to use a shank that is too soft than one that is too hard. Most satisfactory service will be obtained from shanks that are just hard enough to resist any tendency to upset. To express the proper hardness in terms of Brinell numbers would mean a great many tests over a long period of time, or a study of drill steels that are being used successfully in the various districts. To obtain some information along this line, the persons making this investigation requested, a number of companies to send to them drill shanks that had been given the usual treatment at that mine. The results of the hardness tests are given in Table 1. The hardness values given in Table 2 are those of shanks known to have been quenched in water and drawn. These results show that where water quenching and drawing are in vogue the hardness is rarely under 400 Brinell.

This paper presents the results of a series of experiments made in the metallurgical laboratory of Columbia University, New Pork City. The object of the investigation was to determine, as far as possible, the changes in micro-structure and physical properties caused by short periods of heat-treatment and the longer malleable cast-iron process. It was proposed to do this by means of micro-photographs, heating- and cooling-curves, and tensile tests after the various heat-treatments. I. Micro-Constituents of Iron and Steel. The list of the micro-constituents of iron and steel has grown till now it includes seven different substances, called ferrite, cementite, pearlite,* martensite, austenite, sorbite and troosite. Only the first five of these are mentioned in this paper, to facilitate the understanding of which, the following brief definitions are given: 1. Ferrite (named by Prof. Howe) is, chemically, iron free from carbon. It is the softest of the constituents, and is not colored by etching, except when long-continued. Under the microscope it is easily determined by its regular polygonal etructure; or, if structureless, as in malleable cast-iron, by the ease with which it is scratched. Ferrite appears in mild steel in small amount, in grey cast-iron, and in malleable cast-iron. 2. Cementite (also named by Prof. Howe) is now generally conceded to have the formula Fe3C. It is the hardest of the micro-constituents, having the hardness indicated by 7 of the mineralogical scale; and hence it is always left in relief after

MOST of the treatises on metallurgy intimate that simultaneously with the development by the atomic physicist of a really satisfactory theory of the atom will be inaugurated a new epoch in the science of metals. Metallurgically and metaphorically, we shall dwell in the Utopia of Sir Thomas More. It is my privilege this afternoon to demonstrate that this state has not arrived. An atom is a miniature planetary system consisting of a positively charged nuclear sun about which revolve electrons each carrying the negative charge e. The charge on the nucleus is + Ze where Z is the atomic number and the number of planetary electrons in a neutral atom is equal to Z. These electrons are arranged in several groups having different binding energies. Ordinary x-ray phenomena relate to processes occurring deep within the atom, usually with electrons in the so-called K or L shells. Such electrons in the heavier atoms are so closely bound to the nucleus that the forces exerted by neighboring atoms in a solid are relatively inappreciable. For most practical x-ray investigation, the atom may, be considered as in the gaseous phase completely isolated from its neighbors. The K radiation from an element in the gaseous state, in the solid or liquid phase, or even in combination with other elements in all its possible valences, is almost identical. ? Electrical-resistivity )measurments were made be-trueetz room temperatrive and 1.5 oK on five different stocks of cerium metal, and the results were correlated with the types, amounts, and distribution of the impurities present. Magnesium, which appeared to be distributed as a solute throughout the cerium matrix, was found to have a large effect on the residual resistivity, 1 at. pct Mg being sufficient to increase the residual resistivity by about 10 microhm-cm. The formation of ß by repeated thermal cycling between room temperature and liquid-helium temperature is attributed to the deformation and faulting that occurs during the ? D a transformation. In preparation for starting a proposed study of cerium-rich alloys, we examined samples from severa1 stocks of cerium metal in order to choose the purest stock for future use in making the alloys. Low-temperature electrical-resistivity data were used to gain initial information about the purities of the stocks. Additional information was subsequently obtained from chemical analyses, density measurements, optical metallography, and electron-micro-probe analyses. Cerium that has been annealed at high temperature and cooled to room temperature has the fee crystal structure (? phase) with a = 5.16Å. When cooled further, in the region between about 250" and 150°K, some of the fee phase transforms to the double hcp form (ß phase) with a = 3.68 and c = 11.92Å. The remainder of the room-temperature fee form (and perhaps some of the hexagonal phase) transforms electronically in the vicinity of 100° K to the more dense or "collapsed" fee form (a phase), a - 4.85A, by transferring about 0.5 electron per atom from the 4f level to the valence band. Very little work related specifically to the effects of impurities on the physical properties of cerium has been reported in the literature. Gaume-Mahn1, 2 has studied the effects of calcium, magnesium. iron, silicon, and tantalum on the electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility of cerium between 60o and 300°K. Gschneidner, Elliott, and McDonald3 have discussed the effects of total impurity content on the hysteresis of the a —? (reversible) transformation and on the formation of the 4 and "a-? intermediate" phases. Smith and Morrice* have reported the effect of total impurity content on the resistivity of cerium at 4 and 293°K. In none of these reports, however, is it apparent that the distributions of the impurities were determined, L.r., whether the impurities were present in inclusions or in solid solution in the matrix is not mentioned; nor does it appear that the phase purity of the cerium was always considered. In the present study, five different stocks of cerium were involved. One was represented by a single sample of electrowon cerium, which was all that had remained from a stock of high-purity material obtained from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Reno, Nev., in 1959. The other four stocks were recently purchased from commercial sources and were specified to be 99.9 wt pct pure. EXPERIMENTAL Cerium stocks designated as #1, #2, #4, and #5 were obtained from commercial suppliers for the specific purpose of finding a reliable source of high-purity cerium. Although the purity level of the cerium was specified to be 99.9 pet, the specifications did not include limits as to the amounts of various impurities that would be acceptable. Consequently the chemical analyses of the different stocks varied widely. Stock #3, which had been obtained from the U.S. Bureau of Mines and which was the purest on the basis of chemical analyses, consisted of a single specimen of electrowon cerium. THE PURPOSE OF THIS PAPER is to give a brief picture of present day magnesium rolling practice, to elaborate on laboratory and development rolling experiments; and finally, to discuss the possible Future rolling of magnesium. The present production practice is so varied between various mills that it can only he concluded that no single producer is now using a process that is outstandingly superior to others. In view of this, only the general features of present day production practice have been presented and attention is focussed on the results of laboratory find development rolling of magnesium-base alloys as indications of the Future trend of magnesium rolling. MAGNESIUM ROLLING LITERATURE The literature relating to magnesium rolling is divided into three groups: the deformation mechanisms of the hexagonal magnesium crystals, the metallurgical aspects and laboratory type experiments in rolling, and finally, the articles on production rolling methods. This literature was reviewed and is summarized below. In the first group of references, the existence of basal slip in magnesium single crystals was shown by Schiebold and Siebel1 and of {102} twinning by Mathewson and Phillips2, Schmid3 predicted and partially established {101} slip at hot working temperatures. The principal object of an underground coal mine transportation system is to move coal from the face where it is produced to the outside of the mine where it is prepared for market. In addition to the movement of coal, a transportation system must also move supply materials to the inside ; it must move men in and out of the mine ; and it must move rock and other debris out of the mine for disposal. Usually, mine haulage is divided into three categories named for the various areas of the mine served : 1) Pace Haulage. This is used at face from the mining machine to the intermediate transport system. 2) Intermediate or Secondary Haulage. Generally this is used between face haulage and main haulage. Sometimes this is merely an extension of the main haulage. 3) Main Haulage. This extends from the secondary haulage to the outside and is usually either a track or conveyor system, sometimes a combination of both. Transportation modes of coal in the various areas pose different problems, but the whole system must be synchronized. For instance, at the face the coal should be removed quickly from the various places to facilitate the movement of machines, whereas the intermediate system just passes the same coal on to the main transportation system. Selection of the transportation system must be based on the seam height, mining methods used to extract the coal, capacity required, ease of coal handling, and haulage efficiency. When driving rooms, mine cars can be used. They often simplify supply haulage and rock handling because they can also handle these items. Conveyors could be used and would have a greater haulage capacity but they cannot handle supplies easily or segregate the rock. When using a different mining method, such as longwall, mine cars cannot be used because there is not sufficient space to move the cars at the face nor can the cars haul the coal without delays which would cause excessive losses in production. IN a former paper laid before the Institute, entitled Lead and Silver Smelting in Chicago, I endeavored to give a description of the manner in which argentiferous lead ores from the far West were treated in that city, and also described the method employed in the desilverization of the silver-lead produced from the ores. It will perhaps be remembered, that very siliceous ores, principally from the Emma mine, Utah, containing over 40 per cent. of silicic acid, were then being treated at the works of the Chicago Silver Smelting and Refining Company in the reverberatory furnace, with the use of metallic iron, in the form of borings, as a precipitating medium for the lead ; and that the extraction of the silver from the resulting bullion was effected by the Balbach process. The Swansea Works, also the works at Brighton, just outside of this city, and those of S. P. Lunt, were at that time treating ore of a similar character by the same method. The inadequacy of the process for the ores then under treatment was, in a manner, pointed out by me in the paper above referred to. Since the time of its writing, many and important improvements have been made in the metallurgical treatment of Western ores in Chicago. Most ores are now roasted previous to reduction, and the latter operation is conducted in the shaft-furnace instead of the reverberatory. Such is the fact at least at the Swansea Works, the largest in the city, and here it was where the first steps were taken in this direction. In selecting these works as the subject of this paper, I am in hopes that the description given of the various metallurgical operations, as they are there now conducted, will serve to give an idea of the improvements introduced

Pegmatites occur in abundance in certain areas of South West Africa and in adjacent parts of northern Cape Province in the Union of South Africa. Some of the pegmatite deposits were prospected before World War I, and intermittent mining was done during the period between the two World Wars. The deposits of the Jooste lithium mines became an important source of lepidolite, and beryl, columbite-tantalite, wolframite, and other minerals were produced. Since World War I1 prospecting and mining have been carried on vigorously, with the result that South West Africa produced nearly 3000 tons of beryl during 1949 through 1953, together with more than 40,000 tons of lithium minerals, chiefly lepidolite and petalite. Small amounts of tantalite, columbite, and other minerals have also been produced during the postwar period. Most of this mineral production has come from two pegmatite areas roughly outlined in Fig. 1. One is the Karibib-Omaruru area of north central South West Africa. The second is the northeastern part of the Orange River pegmatite area, which extends into adjacent parts of Namaqualand, in northern Cape Province of the Union of South Africa

There is an underlying surge to mining in the Philippines." So said A. R. "Ham" Reed, general manager Itogon-Suyoc Mines, Inc., to this reporter last November. Itogon-Suyoc is a small company with a struggling gold mine, a mixed sulfide mine and some prospects. In the Republic of Philippines (ROP), politics, which have an effect on mining, create some uncertainties. By July 1974, no mining company may have more than 40% foreign ownership. The ownership provision is a matter of concern to such important companies as Atlas and Benguet Consolidated and is generally considered a deterrent to new foreign investment. Under these circumstances, Reed's comments are of interest. On foreign prospectors: Don't come in cold; find a Philippine partner or buy into a company already here. Physical conditions of exploration are tough-terrain, communications -but the mineral potential is excellent.

One of the major problems of operation in the anthracite industry is the disposal and handling of refuse—not because of its complexity but because of the quantity and type of material involved. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the kinds of refuse, methods of disposal, quantities of material to be handled and equipment used, together with present day application at specific operations in the Northern, Eastern Middle, Western Middle and Southern anthracite fields. For the purpose of this paper, refuse is considered to be any material that has no present or foreseeable future value and that must be handled and disposed of in the process of mining and preparing anthracite for market. Included in this classification are tunnel rock, mine rock, cleaner plant refuse, breaker refuse, old timber, ashes and silt. Disposal Methods Old timber is disposed of either by burning or by depositing on the refuse bank. Burning is preferred because timber on the refuse bank is a potential fire hazard. Ashes are deposited on a separate bank, mixed with other refuse, or flushed into old mine workings. In many places, the latter practice has caused considerable difficulty in preparation of coal mined from these areas. In depositing ashes on the surface, it is wise to refrain from mixing them with material containing coal as such contamination may prevent reclamation of the coal in future years. Tunnel work, mine rock, cleaner plant and breaker refuse compose the bulk of the material to be disposed of and handled, and are referred to collectively as "refuse" in this paper. Waste material in or adjacent to the coal beds may be removed at the working face wherever possible. This can be done in flat or lightly pitching beds, and in the Northern field represents a sizable percentage of this type of refuse handled. In the other three coal fields, this method of disposal cannot often be used. Refuse not removed at the working face is taken to the surface and generally is deposited on banks; occasionally it is crushed and flushed into old mine workings. Breaker refuse often is used for constructing berms for silt-retention basins. Disposal Problems The problem of handling refuse is different for each operation, owing to topographical conditions, quantity of material to be handled, anticipated requirements and types of equipment in use elsewhere at the operation. Preparation plants with limited refuse-disposal areas, excessive grades to reach the required elevation and long hauls to disposal areas not readily accessible require the selection of equipment to best meet the conditions. This paper describes a technique of polishing and etching specimens of open-hearth furnace slags or hearth aggregates for identification of the crystalline constituents —lime (CaO), tricalcium silicate (3CaO.SiO2), dicalcium silicate (2CaO.-SiO2), rnonticellite (CaO.MgO.SiO2), or forsterile (2MgO.SiO2), with especial em-phasis on the mineral merwinite (3CaO.-MgO.2SiO2). With proper standardization, this identification does not require the use of the petrographic microscope. The composition of basic open-hearth slags and furnace bottoms falls, almost without exception, within systems containing CaO, MgO, 'IFeO,,, MnO and SiOz, in which the number of basic molecules so greatly exceeds the orthosilicate ratio (two molecules of base to one of silica) that free basic oxides, and combinations between them such as alumi-nates or ferrites, are present in cooled specimens. Orthosilicates of (CaO + NgO) are the most common in such specimens, since in nearly all cases, except premelt slags, the molecular ratio of (CaO + MgO) to SiO, is more than 2 to I. When sufficient lime is available it combines with the silica to form dicalcium silicate (2Ca0.Si02), which contains little, if any, IvfgO, FeO or MnO in solid solution whereas the latter oxides combine to form the oxide solid solution known as periclase. If the lime present is insufficient to form dicalcium silicate (2Ca0.Si02) it combines with Mgo to form either merwillite or moIlticellite (SiOz); these minerals take little if any FeO or MnO into solid solution and the remaining MgO, FeO and hInO combine as periclase. This generalization seems to be valid for basic slags and furnace bottoms, since minerals such as Ca0.MnOSi02 and CaO.FeO.SiOz are found only in slags in which the lime-silica ratio is less than 2 and are not observed in 'pecimens from furnace bottoms. The identification of crystalline constituents in such materials, especially of fine crystals in the groundmass, is difficult under the petrographic microscope. They are often masked by their neighbors because of their small size in relation to the thickness of the thin section and because of the presence of Opaque Or colored constituents. The indices of refraction and the optical sign of the mineral are sometimes difficult to determine because of the small size or because Of twinning or of inclusions within the crystal. Moreover, the positive identification of merwinite (3Ca0.Mg0.2Si02) from its optical properties is usually difficult in the presence of dicalcium silicate (zCaO.SiO2).
