WE all remember when, a few years ago the preparation of coal was nothing but a matter of having somebody at the face or somebody in the railroad car pick out the impurities; also the sizes were generally' made" over a bar screen. Anything that was black was coal; and the only matecia1 picked out was the slate or rock-impurities that could be distinguished by eye or by hefting. This was all right as long. & coal could be sold at. a good price. After all, we are all in business to -make the most money honestly out of a certain acreage of coal and a certain plant. For this purpose what is required is the greatest possible recovery of marketable coal and the highest market price.

THE Exposed Treasure gold-mine has, for the past four years, been one of the largest producing mines of Southern California, its annual output having constituted 1 per cent of the total gold and silver production of the entire State. At the present moment the property is idle, owing to the large quantity of water encountered oil the lower levels, which will require the installation of a powerful pumping-plant before operations can be recommenced. Moreover, a prompt change in the character of the ore has occurred at water-level, which makes imperative an extensive campaign of development in the region of the unoxidized ores before a plant adapted to their treatment can be definitely decided upon. The character of the changes encountered in these deeper ores makes the geology of this deposit a matter of importance, not only for the immediate district, but for the desert region of Southern California in general, where many mines exist having in the oxidized belt conditions that, in many respects, resemble those in the Exposed Treasure mine. The deposit is situated in an apparently isolated butte about 2.5 miles south from the town of Mojave, on the Mojave desert; The butte, though apparently isolated, is in fact geologically part of an extinct volcano, known as Soledad butte, which rises out of the plain 1,5 miles SW. of the mine, to an altitude of 4,650 ft. above sea-level. Other buttes also rise from the desert plain toward the south and east, and again to the westward, all being closely related geologically to Soledad butte,-the whole constituting a single system as to origin and time. THOSE acquainted with the fundamental differences between the, educational .systems of Great Britain and. the United States would hardly expect .the training of men for the petroleum industry to proceed along the same lines- in the two countries. The youth entering an English university is, except in the case of-the student from some of the British colonies or from foreign countries, almost invariably a product of the English "public school." This is in no sense comparable .with the American public school. It is a private institution, frequently of considerable age and heavily endowed. In many aspects it seems to be comparable with the American preparatory school. Yet to some extent its activities remind one of the first years of the undergraduate: course in the American college. Certainly it takes to-itself many of the social, functions of the American college.

The oil embargo and increasing disillusionment with nu- clear power have put this country's abundant coal reserves in growing demand. Both the government and industry are looking toward increased coal mining, and with this goes an increased interest in new and advanced methods of coal utilization. One advanced coal system stands out among the rest-magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Its high efficiency, strong probability of sulfur dioxide control, and limited consumption of cooling water place MHD in a unique position to help the power generation industry. Another point in MHD's favor is the capital costs of operation, which are lower than those of other advanced technologies. However, initial costs are higher and realization of a commercial MHD plant in this country may be more than a decade away.

CHILEAN mining in the public mind is rightly associated with copper. Chuquicamata with its great hill of copper-bearing granodiorite as well as Sewell and Potrerillos with mineralized volcanic necks together can supply a good proportion of the world's normal necessities of that metal. Chile is an extremely long and narrow country, averaging only 109 miles wide. Its eastern frontier is the Andes and it is on the western slopes of these mountains that the great copper deposits have been discovered. West of the Andes a great longitudinal depres sion has permitted accumulation of nitrates and other soluble salts in the arid north; in the north center it is hidden by a series of cross ranges, but in the center a moderate rainfall makes it the country's most important agricultural region. In the south this depression is drowned and gives rise to a series of straits and fiords. This enormous cleft in the earth's crust is separated from the sea by a coast range of moderate elevation which in the south is represented by a series of islands and mushroom-shaped peninsulas

In the quantitative interpretation of electric log data it is essential to know the formation factor, defined as the ratio of the resistivity of the formation 100 per cent saturated with brine to the resistivity of the brine.' This concept implies that the formation factor for any given rock is constant irrespective of the resistivity of the brine or solution with which it is saturated. It is apparent that this can be true only when the rock matrix is wholly non-conductive. As reservoir rocks may contain clay or shale having an appreciable conductance one may expect these constituents to influence the determination of true formation factor. The formation factor may be theoretically derived from log data by dividing the resistivity of the mud filtrate invaded formation by the resistivity of the mud filtrate. Such a method of calculntion has implicit in it the assumption that the fluids in the invaded formation are wholly replaced by mud filtrate. that the solid matrix is non-conducting, and that the formation factor of the invaded zone is identical with the formation factor of the uninvaded zone. Since the validity of the first two basic assumptions regarding the insulating character of porous matrices and the displacement of the interstitial fluids in porous media do not appear to be fully established, the formation factors of a number of cores and clay slurries have been measured under conditions suitable for verifying the assumptions and the extent of any errors inherent in them. CORE STUDIES Apparatus and Procedure Resistivity measurements were made on short cylindrical permeable cores which had been previously mounted in lucite.2 The cores were clamped by means of insulated bolts between brass plates about 5 cm square and 1 cm in thickness. The plates were provided with a ring seal to prevent leakage between them and the core mount, and had a centrally located orifice so that fluids could be flowed through the mounted core. The brass mounting plates were used as electrodes and any current flow between them necessarily passed only through the constituents of the intervening core. Fluid saturation of the core, and fluid flow through the core, were effected by a centrifugal pump connected to the outflow end of the core, thus providing a differential pressure across the core of approximately one atmosphere. The procedure used was first to evacuate each core by means of the pump and then to saturate the core with an aqueous sodium chloride solution of known resistivity. The resistance of the core was measured and flow of the solution through the core continued for sufficient time to establish a constant resistance reading. After equilibrium had been reached with one solution, another sodium chloride solution of a different resistivity was flowed through the core and the flow continued until a constant resistance reading was again obtained. This procedure was continued until resistance measurements of the core had been made with a series of solutions within a salinity range from 1.0N NaCl to distilled water. The data obtained enabled the apparent formation factor of given porous rocks when saturated with fluids of different resistivity to be computed and also provided information regarding the ability of an invading fluid to displace interstitial water from a core. Results Berea Sandstone — The first core examined was a specimen of Berea sandstone." This core had been cut essentially parallel to the bedding for permeability studies. The core was clamped in the core holder and saturated with 1.0N NaCl solution and the resistance determined. It was subsequently flushed and the resistance measured when saturated in turn with 0.1N, 0.025N, 0.01N, .005N sodium chloride solutions and finally with distilled water. The mining industry is guaranteed an important future because its products are indispensable. However, this can be anything from a brilliant, efficient, profitable future to one of being a heavy-handed, dull-witted claimant for public handouts, according to the caliber and training of the young men who enter the industry. Many views have been expressed about the type of education needed for today's mining industry. Criticisms have been aired to the point that further controversy amongst ourselves could be detrimental to both mining education and the mining industry. It is time we get together and start going somewhere. To canvass the various attitudes of mining educators, a questionnaire was sent to a group of these dedicated, intelligent men, whose primary interest is to help the industry and the profession. The following is a summary of their views.

In 1945, Hollomon' showed that after plastic yielding and prior to necking under simple tension, both ferrous and nonferrous materials are approximated by an equation of the following form: where, a = true stress K = strength coefficient 5 = true strain n = strain hardening exponent If a material is stress free, a plot of log o vs log 6 would be expected to be a straight line, the slope of which is the strain-hardening exponent (n) and the intercept on the ordinate axis for 6 = 1. is the logarithm of the strength coefficient K. It can be easily shown that the strain-hardening exponent in the above equation is equal to the total uniform elongation prior to necking. Thus, one can determine the total uniform elongation prior to necking from such a plot and, as pointed out by C. W. MacGregor, 2 it is the amount of strain prior to necking which determines the extent to which a material may be deep drawn. In the view of the current interest in the fabrication of beryllium shapes, it was thought that a knowledge of the strain-hardening exponent of cross-rolled beryllium sheet would be of general interest. Load-strain data after yielding and prior to necking was taken from the work of Greenspan,3 converted to true stress and true-plastic strain, and plotted on log-log paper as shown in Fig. 1. The value of Young's modulus E for beryllium was taken as 43 . l06 psi. The slope of this plot gave a value of 0.212 for the strain-hardening exponent (n) and the intercept on the ordinate axis a value of 105,000 for K. The total uniform elongation is thus 21.2 pct, in excellent agreement with the value estimated by Greenspan (about 20 pct). Furthermore,

Metallurgical changes in SAE 52100 ball-bearing components resulting from overload testing are described. Changes in microstructure, hardness, and resiclctal stresses crre discussed zuitlz re.ference to material cleanliness obtained by various steel-melting practices and are compared with work by otlzer investigators. Evidence is presented to show that the initialion and development of microstruc-tural alterations are characterized by two separate reactions: the appeavance of a "dark etchingJ' constituent, and "gray lines" or a light etclzing constituent. The dependency of these tzvo reactions on material cleunliness, running tirne, and contact stresses is discussed and a failure mode related to material cleanliness and microstructural transformation is proposed. THE study of ball- and roller-bearing contact fatigue has been paced by a strong emphasis on bears ing application performance. Particular attention has been paid to conditions that effect the spalling-type failure that is characteristic of rolling contact fatigue in through-hardened components. Some of the conditions investigated are lubrication and atmosphere,1-3 material characteristics and finish,475 and speed and design fa~tors."~ A typical spalling-type failure is shown in Fig. 1. The arrow shows the motion of the ball relative to the inner-ring race surface. The leading edge of the spall is usually sharper than the trailing edge. The race surface near the trailing edge also shows small dents caused by debris from the spall. In this type of testing very little metallurgical investigation is done on failed bearings. Emphasis is placed on test conditions and statistical analyses of endurance data. More basic work has been done relating micro-structural changes to fatigue performance. Dyer" and Wood, Cousland, and sargant9 have used mostly simple materials, such as single crystals and single-phase polycrystalline specimens, under simple alternating strain to identify a systematic process of fatigue damage. drutowski" was concerned primarily with the relationship between steel structure, contact stress, and energy losses in rolling contact. dones11 and Bush, Grube, and Robinson12 utilized changes in microstructure and residual stress in overload-tested rolling contact elements as a means of investigating the fatigue process. Work is being done on an ASME-sponsored contract,13 using both simple and complex materials, but there is still a long way to go before such theories as pore and void growth in simple structures can be applied to the relatively complex bearing steel microstructure. The purpose of this paper is to report on an investigation into the effect of steel cleanliness on the structural alteration and residual stress changes found in overload-tested ball bearings. Using these results and those of previous investigators, we will propose probable failure mechanisms in both overload- and normal load-tested ball bearings.14,15 PROCEDURE Ball bearings? 3208 size, were fabricated from SAE 52100 steel obtained by five different melting practices. The melting practices, chemistry, and inclusion ratings for the five lots of steel are summarized in Tables I and 11. The nonmetallic inclusion ratings were determined by the Jernkontoret method described in ASTM E45-51 Method A. This technique consists of microscopically examining a series of polished samples taken from specified locations in the ingots, billets, or bars. Each sample is surveyed at XlOO magnification and the inclusion types and sizes are compared to standard fields. Dr. Thwing speaks' of the carbon, but intimates that it is safe to have a temperature of -800° C., which we find to be rather dangerous on a great tiffany shales. It is not possible to include in this paper, limited as it is in scope, the many diverse steps toward the reduction of mine accidents that are taken in the mines that produce the nation's coal. Every coal-producing state has enacted laws covering proper mining practices, and the major portion of these are directly related to the safety of the mine employees. The United States Bureau of Mines, the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, The American Mining Congress, a number of national, regional and state organizations, as well as the coal technical press, have covered time and time again all of the '(do" and "don't" phases of mine operation that bear on the important question of mine and employee safety. Within the past 15 years The Union Pacific Coal Co, has attempted to put into practice in its mines in southern Wyoming these many good recommendations, finding some value in all, and yet, to secure substantial results, the management found it necessary to resort in the end to what might be referred to as i'extra-territorial" methods. It is the writer's purpose to show in this paper that marked and even extraordinary betterment, can be brought about when employer and employee work together with due sincerity. In presenting our own experience, one that has been duplicated in so far as results are concerned on numerous other properties, no theory of perfection of management exists; on the other hand, our organization feels that as long as our record of accidents remains as shown by even our latest and best performance we still have far to go. Safety work in some form has been carried on in and about the mining properties of The Union Pacific Coal Co. since the first mine was opened at the now long-abandoned town of Carbon, Wyo., in 1868. On June 30, 1903, an explosion and subsequent mine fire occurred in mine No. 1 at Hanna, taking 169 lives, and a second explosion occurred in the same mine on March 28, 1908, in which 59 additional lives were lost. Looking back with impartiality on the causes leading up to these two unfortunate disasters, we can only conclude that shooting from the solid, the absence of adequate ventilation, rock dusting, the use of water at the face to allay

The following experiments and researches were originally conducted by Dr. Heinrich Rcessler, chief of the German Gold and Silver Parting Establishment at Frankfort-on-the-Main, for the sole purpose of abating the nuisance created by the discharge into the air of the sulphurous and sulphuric acids generated in the process of parting bullion by sulphuric acid. The results achieved have, however, an important bearing not only on this process, but are of value in the manufacture of sulphuric acid and sulphate of copper from sulphurous gases derived from any source. It has now been in successful operation for a term of years at Dr. Roessler's own works, and has been lately introduced with satisfactory results at the royal mints of Kremnitz and Munich, and the well-known establishment of Johnson Mathey & Co., of London.

This report is a brief discussion of the impurity levels both in primary aluminum and super-purily alnminim in connection with raw materials and proc-essing methods. Particularly, truce amounls of im-purities were analyzed by introducing nittss-speclro-gruphy and nenlron-aclivalian analysis techniques. Vanadium and gallium content in primary aluminum metal corresponded to theor amounls in anode coke. but the nickel content in primary aluminum was hide-pendent oj its amount in the anode cake. Sulfur in the anode colic might result in an increase of the iron content in the molten metal in the reduction cell. The content of sodium and calcium increased with increasing bath ratio. In the holding furnacc sodium content decreased rapidly, and nonmetallic inclusions merit separated front the mollen metal. Three-layer elctrolysis was effectire in eliminating many impuri-ties with the exception of copper, aluminum oxide. aluminum nitride, and some rare-earth elements. THE amount of impurities and nonmetallic inclusions in aluminum metal depends on impurities in the raw materials and various production processes. This paper presents an investigation of the behavior of impurities and nonmetallic inclusions in aluminum during the electrolysis process, the period in the holding furnace, and the process of three-layer electrolysis. Chemical analysis and emission spectrometric analysis have generally been used as methods to determine small amounts of impurities in both primary aluminum and super-purity aluminum; however. mass spectrography and neutron-activation analysis have been recently introduced into this field, and trace amounts of impurities can accurately be determined by these latter methods. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Common impurities were determined by means of absorptiometric. polarographic, flame-photometric. and emission-spectrometric methods. However, in the determination of trace amounts of impurities and non-metallic inclusions, the following methods were applied. In the analyses of trace impurities by mass-spec- trographic analysis, samples were exposed in the vacuum spark of double-focus ing Mattauch-Herzog type mass spectrograph (Japan Electron Optics Laboratory, Ltd.). Ilford Q2 photographic plates were used as ion detectors. Fe was used as the internal standard, and the atomic concentration of each element was calculated by the following expression and converted into the weight concentration: where E, and Ei are the exposures (coulomb) when isotopes of the internal standard and impurity elements (on which the estimate is based) show the same density, X is the percent (atomic) concentration of the standard, IF and Ii are the percent abundances of the isotopes of the standard the impurity elements (on which the estimate is based), and Ms and hfi are the mass of the isotopes of the standard and impurity elements (on which the estimate is based). The coefficient of variation in this method is about 40 pct in the range of 0.1 to 1 ppm. In neutron-activation analysis, irradiations were done in the nuclear reactors TRIGA-I1 (neutron flux: 4.7 x 10 11 n per sq cm per sec; Rikkyo University) or JRR-2 (neutron flux: 2 x 1013 n per sq cm per sec: Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute). After the chemical separation, a NaI (3 by 3 in.) scintillator connected to a 256-channel y-ray spectrometer (R.C.L.) was used for counting and recording various activated impurities. The coefficient of variation in this method is about 20 pct. In the analyses of nonmetallic inclusions, aluminum-oxide determination was carried out according to Fischer's method, 3 as follows. A slice of sample was cut off and the surface was cleaned. It was dissolved in bromine-methanol. The solution was filtered and the residue was washed. The residue was fused with potassium bisulfate flux. Then it was dissolved in weak acid, and oxine solution was added. The aluminum oxinate was extracted with benzene. Finally, aluminum was determined absorptio-metrically. Aluminum nitride determination was carried out as follows. A slice of sample was cut off and the surface was cleaned.
