Recently equations have been presented by Rose and Bruce' and by Rose², showing how the relative permeability of a reservoir rock may be determined from the capillary character of the rock. In particular, equations were developed to show the relationship between capillary pressure and the effective permeability to the wetting phase in a poly-phase flow system. The equations are as follows (nomenclature the same as in the Rose and Bruce paper) Rose and Bruce assume that the average length of path (L,), which the wetting fluid follows in flowing through a porous media is independent of the saturation to the wetting phase, so that 1 is a constant dependent only on the k rock, and the permeability to the wetting phase is a function of the saturation and of the capillnry pressure: In measuring the flow of ekctric current through partially saturated core samples, it has been observed that the electrical resistance usually is not a simple linear function of saturation. This fact indicates that the average length of path in the flow of electric current is not independent of saturation, but rather that the tortuosity of the path depends upon the average saturation to the conducting fluid as well as upon the characteristics of the rock. itself. Inasmuch as the flow of fluid and the flow of electric current in many respects are analogous, it may be indicated further that the length of path for fluid also may not be independent of saturation. The following relationship can be derived to express the resistance to flow of electric current through a core sample partially saturated with conductive wetting phase, the non-wetting phase being non-conductive: where L is the average length of path followed by the current in flowing through a length L of partially saturated core, where L is the length of current path when the core is fully saturated, and where Rs and R, are the specific resistivities of the partially saturated and saturated core sample, respectively. It will be noted that R., the specific resistivity of the core sample when S, = 1.0, is equal to the "formation resistivity factor"' multiplied by the specific resistivity of the saturating fluid. If it be assumed that the average lengths of path for fluid flow and for the flow of electric current are the same, then equation (5) may be combined with equations (l), (2) and (3) to give the following relationship: The above equation suggests including a correction for tortuosity when calculating the relative permeability of a reservoir rock to a wetting phase. The correction factor may be obtained from the resistivity-saturation relationship. THERE are about sixty bodies which chemists call elements ; the simplest forms of matter which they have been able to extract from the rocky crust of our earth, its waters, and its atmosphere. These substances are distributed in very unequal quantities, and in very different manners. As regards the frequency of these elements in nature, neglecting for the present those which constitute air and water, and confining ourselves to the solid matters of the earth's crust, there are a few which are exceedingly abundant, making up nine-tenths, if not ninety-five hundredths, of the rocks so far as known to us. The elements of which silica, alumina, lime, magnesia, potash, and soda are oxides, are very common, and occur almost everywhere. There are others which are much rarer, being found in comparatively small quantities. Many of these rarer elements are, however, of great importance in the economy of nature. Such are the common metals and other substances used in the arts, which occur in nature in quantities relatively very minute, but which have been collected by various agencies, and thus made available for the wants of man. It is chiefly of the well-known metals, iron, copper, silver, and gold, that I propose to speak to-night ; but there are two other elements not classed among the metals, which I shall notice for the reason that their history is extremely important, and will, moreover, enable , us to comprehend more clearly some points in that of the metals themselves. AS the pioneer operation treating the mixed lead- zinc-iron ores from the district tributary to the Salt Lake Valley, the International Smelting Co.'s plant has offered an extremely interesting and instructive opportunity to study some phases of this problem. Basically, there were two main reason for our attempting to work out a successful operation for the separation and concentration of the values contained in the rather widespread deposits of these so- called lead-zinc ores. In the first place, the time was ripe and demanded some method of curtailing the economic waste resulting from the costs of past and present practice of smelting ores of this character, or rather, those ores which could stand the charges inherent with smelting them. Secondly, but rather primarily with us, we believe that such a solution would greatly in- crease in general the production of lead in the district tributary to the Salt Lake Valley. It is generally known that there were and are three relatively large lead smelting plants in the Salt Lake Valley and the decreasing production of correspondingly clean lead ores was not efficient to justify the existence of all three. We could not hope for better lead smelting metallurgy nor more efficient business management than was being practised, so the only prospect was to at- tempt to work out some way to increase the primary production and thus widen the scope of operations.

Recent discovery at Mount Isa of copper mineralization in commercial amount at a depth of 1000 ft., coinciding with downward termination of ore at about the same depth within the larger silver-lead-zinc lenses that have been the standby of Mount Isa's production to date, has been cited as an example in support of mineral zoning. A previous paper by the author and Graham Hall1 furnished a detailed description of the geology of the ore at Mount Isa as exposed up to that time, but necessarily dealt mainly with the silver-lead-zinc mineralization. Most of the geologic facts that constitute the first half of the present paper were set forth in the previous one in much greater detail, with full supporting evidence for the facts cited. The large amount of underground development (approximately 20 miles) and the extensive exploration carried out by diamond drilling (100,000 ft.) at Mount Isa, added to extensive microscope work conducted over a period of years, both by the company's staff and by others, had made possible the calculation within fairly close limits of mineralogical composition of the principal mineralized block of ground down to 1000-ft. depth, and had established closely the mineral succession, with reasons for deposition of the various minerals in the patterns now occupied by them. The geologic facts as outlined in the previous paper remain as stated; but because substantial development within the new copper ore body and further exploratory diamond drilling within the new silver-lead-zinc area (Racecourse) have taken place since that paper was written, statements and figures relating to those two areas in the present paper supersede those furnished in the previous one. The recent work likewise has established more clearly the paragenetic relationship between the chalco-pyrite and galena. Evidence confirming the relationship is furnished in the present paper. H. 0. Hofman, Boston, Mass. (communication to the Secretary*) :—The experimental demonstration by Professor H. Ries, of the fact that a mixture of clay and finely-ground flux will melt more readily than one in which the flux is less fine and therefore less intimately mixed, is very striking, and will be appreciated especially by those who have to discuss, before classes of students, fusions on a small or a large scale. The statement, that I " rather disputed" the influence of size of flux-particles on the ease with which fire-clay mixtures fused, is an erroneous inference from the paper written by Mr. B. Stoughton and myself in 1898.' We did not undertake to study the influence upon fusibility of the sizes of the particles, either of clay or flux. What we did try to find out was, whether the common practice of finely grinding raw or burnt clay, or a mixture of the two, before testing with Seger cones for resistance to heat and to fluxes, xould give the same results as if the materials were tested just as they were going to be

Metallic bismuth was known in the Middle Ages and the name is supposed to come from the German Wismut. The origin of the German name is uncertain. References to bismuth are found in the writings of Valentine, Paracelsus, and Agricola between 1450 and 1550. Early specimens of bismuth were very impure and often were confused with antimony, tin, and zinc. About the middle of the eighteenth century, J. H. Pott, C. J. Geoffroy, and Torbern Bergman succeeded in producing fairly pure bismuth and showed it to be an elementary metal similar in many respects to lead.

TAXES in general are onerous and are not a pleas- ant subject for discourse. There are, however, some very cogent reasons why we should dedicate a part of our thoughts and services to the solution of our taxation problems: The happiness of every individual in the United States depends on the maintenance of a stable government. The collection of taxes is an indispensable function of a stable government, and the power to collect taxes depends in part on the question whether taxes are fair and equitable. As representatives of the mining industry it is our duty to .protect it from tax burdens that are discriminatory or- unjust, As citizens we find that taxation is incessantly endeavouring to unravel the knots in our purse-strings. Many members of the Institute may be consulted .by clients on taxation problems, especially the phases which re- late to depletion and valuation. It is the hope of the writer that the discussion of some of the current depletion and valuation problems will stimulate interest in the problems, and as a consequence of this new interest facts will be ventilated, opinions rendered and services performed, which will be a means of solving the problems to the satisfaction of all parties interested.

NEED for some simple method of determining tonnages in mill circuits has always been felt by operators and consultants alike. To meet this demand the following method was evolved and has been found accurate and practical after considerable testing on various mill flows. The essence of the method is to add a chemical at a uniform rate to a mill flow, such as a launder conveying pulp, and then determine the concentration of the added chemical in a sample of the pulp. From this procedure the tonnage can be calculated. Common table salt has proved the most satisfactory chemical for ordinary conditions. It has many decided advantages for use in tonnage determinations, among them being the following:

THOSE chemists (they are still greatly in the minority) who use the spectroscope, use it very often, and find it almost indispensable. As a means of detecting minute quantities of the metals it is unrivalled. A metal can be readily distinguished in the presence of any other element, compound, or mixture without the necessity of separation. The qualitative analysis of the metallic constituents of a substance, which the spectroscope gives so easily, is a sure basis for planning a chemical analysis. As the determination of each element proceeds the purity of precipitates may be checked as often as desired. If, possessing these advantages, the spectroscope has been neglected in general chemistry, it is not surprising that it was neglected in metallurgical chemistry; for many of the impurities which are of industrial interest, even when they are present in a metal or alloy in small quantities, are not then always easily detected by the examination of their visible spectrum. The history of the development of the art has been given in Bureau of Standards Scientific Paper No. 444.

C. N. FEnner, New York City (communication to the Secretary) : A possible explanation of some of the' phenomena of amalgamation cited by Mr. Bayliss and others has occurred to me. We know that if, to a quantity of mercury, gold and silver are added until a putty-like paste is formed, and if this mass is spread on a flat surface and pressure is applied, a more fluid portion of the mercury will be squeezed out from the rest, carrying gold and silver with it. The proportion of gold to silver will depend, I think, upon various causes and conditions—the relative chemical affinity which gold and silver have for mercury; the amount of pressure used; the presence of other metals:

OpeRations on the Texas Gulf Coast during 1936 increased materially over 1935. A number of new fields were discovered and a few of the older fields were extended, both by the discovery of deeper pay sands and by lateral expansion of the known producing horizons. Twenty-seven new fields have been discovered, of which 25 are oil fields and the others are gas fields that have every indication of becoming oil-producing areas. Amelia, Anahuac, Bay City, North Pettus, Placedo, Pickett Ridge and Tomoconnor have had major extensions. Production for 1936 amounted to 91,224,844 bbl., an increase of 21,627,033 bbl., or 31 per cent, over the 1935 production of 69,597,811 bbl. The number of producing wells at the end of 1936 was 6727, as compared with 4851 at the end of 1935. Proration has continued in force, thus decreasing the rate of depletion and the number of abandonments normally expected. New Fields A brief discussion of the new fields follows, in addition to Tables 1 and 2, which contain the general data on these fields. Aransas (McCampbell).-Buckingham and McCampbell No. 1 McCampbell was drilled to 7501 ft., then plugged back to 6560 ft. and completed in the Marginulina for a 100-bbl. flowing well on July 18. Bee County.—The Voss field, discovered by Swiger and Devonian's No. 1 Voss, and the Holzmark field, discovered by Miller and Donzis on the Holzmark farm, are both of the same type structurally and are caused by folding against a fault, one field being on one side of a fault and the other on the opposite side of the same fault. Brooks County.—-Standard Oil Company of Texas Garcia No. 1, the discovery well in the Alta Mew field, and Dick Young's Singer No. 1, the discovery well of Alta Verde, appear to indicate small fields. Garcia No. 1 was drilled to 8022 ft. and plugged back to 2485 ft., at which depth the well made 189 barrels. This paper reports the results of studies of the impact properties of quenched and tempered alloy-steel plates as a function of sulfur content. It was found that the impact energy levels decreased continuously as the sulfur content increased and that there was a straight-line relationship between impact energy and sulfur content when plotted on logarithmic coordinates. Cross rolling raised the level of these Lines for transverse tests and lowered the level for logitudinal tests proportionately to the amount of cross rolling. ALTHOUGH it has been generally recognized that, for applications in which notch toughness is critical, the sulfur content of the steels used should be held to a low value, quantitative information on the effect of sulfur on notch toughness has not been available. For such applications, it is a common practice to specify minimum impact values, and in order that these may be met consistently it is important that the steel producer know quantitatively the effect of sulfur on notch toughness so that realistic sulfur content limits can be applied to the steels they produce. In many instances, particularly in flat-rolled products, impact properties are specified in the direction transverse to the principal rolling direction, so that the factors affecting the anisotropy or directionality of impact properties are also of concern to the steel producer. For some applications, furthermore, it is a common practice to increase the sulfur content of steels in order to improve their machinability, and, in such instances, the effect of this practice on notch toughness may often be of concern. This paper reports on an investigation, carried out at Battelle Memorial Institute, designed to furnish this quantitative information on the effect of sulfur on notch toughness and also to furnish further information on the factors affecting the anisotropy of impact properties in wrought heat-treated alloy steels. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental steels were of intended base analysis: 0.30 pct C, 0.80 pct Mn, 0.25 pct Si, 2.5 pct Ni, 0.80 pct Cr, and 0.45 pct Mo. Steels were made with sulfur contents varying from 0.005 to 0.179 pct. The steels were prepared from 600-lb induction-furnace melts. Steels containing 0.020 pct or more sulfur (at meltdown) were melted from a charge of ingot iron (except for one heat): lower-sulfur steels were made from electrolytic iron. The charge consisted of ingot or electrolytic iron, ferrosilicon to give 0.10 pct Si, and ferromanganese to give 0.05 pct Mn. At meltdown, electrolytic nickel, ferromolybdenum, iron phosphide, and pyrite were added followed in sequence by ferrochromium, sili-comanganese, ferrosilicon, and ferromanganese. The slag was then removed and graphite added to give the desired carbon content. Bath temperature was adjusted to 2850°F and, when no other additions were to follow, 2 lb per ton of aluminum was added, immediately before tapping. Compositions of the experimental steels appear in Table I. Analyses are from single determinations, except sulfur which was analyzed in duplicate. A test sample (3 in. in diam by 6 in. long) and a 575-1b ingot were poured from each heat. The test sample was poured in a sand mold; the cooling rates of the test sample and the large ingot were approximately the same. Chemical analysis chips and metal lographic specimens were taken from the test samples. The ingot was 8 in. sq at the base and 9 in. sq at the top. A 5 X 5 X 6-in. sand mold hot top was completely filled in teeming the ingot. After solidification, the mold was stripped from the ingot which cooled to room temperature. Ingots were reheated to 2250"F and rolled to 1.9-in. slabs on a commercial mill. The slabs were box-cooled to room temperature. Sections of the 1.9-in. slabs were heated to 2250°F and rolled on a Battelle laboratory mill according to one of three schedules: 1) rolled straightaway to 0.5-in. plate; 2) rolled straightaway to 1.3-in. thickness, then cross rolled to 0.5-in. plate (29 pct cross rolling); or 3) cross rolled from 1.9-in. to 0.5-in.-thick plate (46 pct cross rolling). The 0.5-in.-straight- or cross-rolled plates were normalized at 1700°F for 1 hr and then water quenched from 1600°F. Plates were then tempered 2 hr at 1240°, 1170°, 1080°, or 860°F to obtain Rockwell C hardness of 25, 30, 35, and 40, respectively. Tempering was followed by quenching to room temperature to avoid temper embrittlement. Slack-quenched plates were isothermally transformed for 26 min at 800°F, quenched, and tempered 2 hr at 1170°F. Pearlitic microstructures were obtained by holding 168 hr at 1200° F, followed by quenching. Charpy V-notch specimens were taken both transverse and longitudinal to the main rolling direction, notched perpendicular to the plate surface, and tested. SEVEN years ago there was installed in the hospital of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co. at Kellogg, Idaho, an ultra-violet ray quartz lamp, the standard equipment which is found everywhere in the offices of physicians and among usual hospital equipment. The use of this lamp was con- fined largely to treatment of pathological cases, still treatment of under-nourished children, run-down anemic people, both men and women, and, as a general tonic, was part of the routine hospital procedure. At the latitude of the Ceur d'Alene district and especially because of the position of the towns in deep canyons, with much overcast and cloudy weather, sunshine is not plentiful at any time of the year; for many of the winter months there is scarcely any. Underground workers, particularly during the winter, have little sun- shine; it is not unusual to have none at all for weeks at a time. Treatment by the ultra-violet ray lamp in the hospital has resulted in many extraordinary benefits but the use of the lamp is expensive and limited. Some weeks ago attention was directed to the automatic solarium equipment of the Burdick Corporation. The doctors strongly recommended the increased use of the ultra-violet lamp for its curative powers and tonic effects, urging that it be made accessible to all employees. Real interest was . . also displayed by employees with the possibility of securing ultra-violet ray treatment for themselves and families under better conditions than it was possible to have by the limited use of the lamp at the hospital. This resulted in the installation of the so-called sun room or automatic solarium as an adjunct to the mine change-house. An annex was built to the change-house, with dressing rooms for women, children and men from other departments, and the outfit put into use on Sept. 5, 1929. The application of the law of supply and demand to the sale of crude oil is generally conceded, but the motives underlying the buyer's (refiner's) demands are not always obvious to the seller (producer). In some cases this obscurity has led to the conclusion that the refiner may be unnecessarily particular when he selects one crude and rejects another. This preference, however, is very largely the reflection of the refiner's product demands and the quality of the stocks obtainable from the selected crude. The purpose of this paper is to point out critical characteristics of the major classes of refined products and to show how crudes vary in their suitability for such products. With relatively few exceptions, available processing methods and addition agents make it theoretically possible to produce any type of refined product from any crude source, although it may not be economi-cally sound to do so. The widespread application of thermal cracking for converting higher boiling stocks into gasoline is well known. More recently cracking and refining in the presence of catalysts9 have been developed, as well as various processes for polymerizing lighter hydro-carbons into gasolines having desirable characteristics.6 For several years, selective solvents have been applied commercially to refining inferior quality kerosene, Diesel fuel and lubricating oil distillates .3 Improved methods for refining lubricating oils from crude residua,4 formerly suitable only for fuel, are now in use and a number of special solvent processes are available for dewaxing lubricating oils to low pour point.5 These improved refining methods have been developed not only to meet the demand for improved product quality but also to enable the refiner to obtain quality products from crude sources that would not yield such products by the older refining methods. In many cases, the utilization of these modern refining tools necessi-tates an appreciable expenditure for equipment as well as added manufac-turing costs, and their application therefore must be justified economically. Despite the availability of such tools, the added processing costs involved and yields obtainable may render their application entirely impractical. The economical recovery of the valuable constituents from the effluent of gas-con-densate wells has developed into a problem of balancing the cost of recovery against the cost of compressing the residual gas back into the formation. A possible method of extracting the gasoline and distillate from the natural gas is by oil absorption at high pressures. In order to design and evaluate an absorption plant, fundamental data on the composition of the coexisting hydro- carbon vapor and liquid phases at various temperatures and pressures are essential. A review of the literature indicated that the necessary data for the design of such plants are lacking. The nearest approach to desired published data is that of Katz and Hackmuth,~ who experimentally deter-mined the composition of the coexisting vapor and liquid phases in a natural gas-crude oil system at pressures up to 3000 lb. per sq. in. and at temperatures from 40' to zoo°F. This paper presents the results of the experimental determination of the equilib-rium distribution of the hydrocarbons methane through hexane between natural gas and a typical absorber oil. The ranges of temperature and pressure chosen were from 33' to r8oUF. and from 100 to 5000 lb. per sq. inch. Materials The absorber oil was a typical naturally occurring, Straw-colored distillate that had previously been steam-distilled to an initial boiling point of 300 F. The physical and chemical properties, including the results of an Engler distillation, are presented in Table I. See refrence I. The n-hexane was obtained from the Ohio Chemical and Manufacturing Co., Cleveland, Ohio. This liquid had a boiling range of from 149" to 152.6'F., with a density of 0.667 at 60°F. and a molecular weight of 85 by benzene freezing-point depression. The propane, isobutane, wbu-tane, isopentane and n-pentane were ob-ta,ined from the Philgas Department of the Phillips Petroleum Co. Certified analyses of these compounds showed their purity to be in excess of 99.5 per cent and they were riot further purified.
