The data we need most in connection with the brasses are the vapor tension of the zinc from the brasses at different temperatures, the heat of combination of zinc With copper to form different kinds of brasses, and the latent heat of fusion of these brasses at the melting temperature.

Belting worth thousands of dollars can be ruined in a few minutes because of careless maintenance or lack of maintenance. Proper belt conveyor maintenance means having a clean conveyor system at all times. The belt line should be visually inspected during each shift. Equipped with proper maintenance instructions, one belt man can patrol a belt line of 2 to 3 km (1.5 to 2 miles). His duties would be to lubricate drives and idlers (except sealed-for- life type), maintain belt and conveyor frame alignment, detect sticking idlers, and maintain an unobstructed right-of-way.

Most of the early coal production in Tennessee was for iron-making, and here, contrary to the usual custom, coal was used in the early furnaces before charcoal was. There was no salt industry of any volume. A considerable quantity of the coal used in the state before the Civil War was brought down the Cumberland River from eastern Kentucky, and both Pittsburgh coal and coal from the river mines in Kentucky was brought up the Tennessee River. The Memphis market was supplied almost entirely by river from Pittsburgh seam mines until the end of the period. The available data did not permit the production by counties to be estimated. [ ]

The experiences of Canex Placer Ltd. in establishing vegetation on a lead-zinc tailing pond are presented, hoping others with similar challenges will be benefited. History The tailing ponds are the result of 23 years of mining and milling operations, which ceased in August 1970. Roughly 7.9 million tons of lead-zinc ore were removed in that time. The ponds are located between Salmo River and B.C. Highway 3, about 8 miles north of Nelway near the Canada-U.S. border.

CYCLONE thickeners are "hydraulic centrifuges" designed either to produce a maximum practical separation between the water and solids of a feed slurry or to classify the slurry solids according to particle settling rate. The possibilities of utilizing the thickener to "close" plant water circuits have been investigated.

These are distributed without charge. Through a unique Department of Commerce program a group of US mining equipment manufacturers spent 18 fruitful days in the, Far East, meeting with government and industry leaders in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philip¬pines. The US Mining and Exploration Equipment Semi¬nar Mission, held April 3-20, 1979, was sponsored by the Special Activities Group of the Commerce Department's Office of International Marketing. The program included a series of technical overview papers presented by the manufacturers, aimed at promoting the sale of US products and services throughout the world.

The Mining and Metallurgical Club of the University of Toronto held a very successful meeting at the Engineers' Club on Jan. 29, 1917. Interesting papers on the Arizona Mining Districts and on the Creighton Mine at Sudbury were read. Several members of the freshman class who have changed from other branches of engineering to mining have been taken into the Club, so that we are now booming. We are also making an attempt to have more of our members apply for junior membership in the Institute, and hope to report favorably along these lines in the near future. C. A. The Chairmen of several of the technical committees report that papers on subjects of timely interest in their respective branches have been promised. David H. Browne, who was appointed Chairman of the Committee on Arrangements, has organized his committee for active work. Members are urged to make their plans now to be present at this meeting to avail themselves of the pleasant opportunity for greeting old friends and making new ones among those engaged in the same profession.
