MORE men are killed and injured in the metal mines of the United States from falls of rock and ore than from any other cause. Dan Harrington, of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, recently stated that "falls of men and material continue to take about 50 per cent of the lives annually lost in our mines (coal or metal) and this kind of accident is now and has been one of the most difficult to prevent." The fact that comparatively little has recently been written on this important subject for the benefit of the metal miner is the incentive for the present paper. Little will be said that will be new, but I hope to place fresh emphasis on certain well-known' principles' and to reiterate and stress previously stated rules so that the average experienced miner, as well as his buddy who may not be so experienced,' will sit up and take notice. It is not within the scope of this paper to discuss mining methods from the standpoint of safety and the prevention of accidents from falls of rock. It is up to the mine management to select the system of mining best suited to the character of the ore deposit and its wall conditions. This is something that the miner can do little about; although in many mines the management encourages the workmen to make suggestions that will improve existing

The revolution in equipment for blasthole drilling, ore loading, and ore hauling has been so rapid over the last ten years that it has generated an important new profit potential in the mining industry. With the new high-capacity machinery now available, it is possible for a mining enterprise to earn a profit from larger and lower grade orebodies than ever before despite the ever-increasing burden of rising costs. Just what such equipment can accomplish when coupled with improved mining practice has been demonstrated with startling success at the No. 1 mine of Minerva Oil Co. near Cave-in-Rock in Hardin County, Ill. The No. 1 is an underground operation which has been producing fluorspar and zinc ores and concentrates continuously since 1944. A few years ago, when the mine neared the familiar cross-roads where rising costs, increasing tonnages, and relatively static product prices converge, company officials decided to bolster the operation with new mobile equipment. They chose three machines which proved so effective that output at the No. 1 doubled between 1963 and 1965,while costs dropped by about 40% in the same period.

T. D. Yensen.*—As my information is of a negative nature, I think it belongs under this paper. We are particularly interested in magnetic materials and we would like very much on occasions to make use of powder metallurgy. We have tried repeatedly to use powder metallurgy in preparing our nickel alloys but always. with negative results; that is, we cannot get as good magnetic properties by powder metallurgy as we can by starting with a molten material. We have tried by all possible means to make materials' like 50 per cent iron-nickel alloys by powder metallurgy. The compacts can be regularly lorged and rolled but no matter what we do in the way of annealing, the magnetic properties come out very much poorer than if we start with molten material. F. V. Lenel. †—I want to mention one characteristic of articles made from metal powders which distinguishes them from die castings; that is, their wear resistance. Die castings usually are made from zinc or aluminum alloys and a few copper-zinc alloys; all of them are comparatively soft and not very wear resistant. I know of a number of cases where powder metallurgy rather than the die-casting method was used for producing a certain part because higher wear resistance was needed than could be attained in die castings. A, J. LanghammeR.*—The subject of powder metallurgy is somewhat difficult to discuss, and portray, in the time that his been allotted. Most of you would rightly be bored if we went into details. However, I will cite one incident that possibly will help illustrate some of the potentials. Last summer I was in Washington and met Navy officials for the purpose of studying the possibility of making a certain part by powder metallurgy. The part is highly intricate and I happened to remark that the material cost would be high; that is, the cost on one raw material. Promptly a high-ranking Navy officer said: "Mr. Langhammer, if you must pay x dollars a pound for the raw material, but achieve the desired results, the cost of the finished part would still be low."

In October 1939, a drilling program was commenced on the Atlantic seaboard of Brazil, with three steam rotary rigs of medium capacity. One of these was assigned to the State of Alagbas and the other two to the State of Bahia. During the remaining few months of 1939 and during the year 1940, some eight wells were drilled, two in Alagbas and six in Bahia. Two small producers were found in the latter state. In early 1941 three medium-weight Diesel rigs were added to the equipment, thus permitting the drilling of some 15 wells during the year 1941. The two small producers found in 1940 in the State of Rahia were near the city of Silo Salvador. In 1941 three additional small wells were brought in, in the same area, and a further producer on an isolated structure some 75 km. to the northwest of this production. No commercial production has been found in the State of Alagbas. Approximately 26 wells have been drilled or are drilling, six of which are producers— five in one area and one in another. The program for 1942 calls for the development of the two areas in which wells have been found and also the drilling of several wildcat structures located either by geophysics or surface geology. All production in the area of the several producing wells is somewhat less than 2000 ft. and in the other area about 3800 ft. The area of the several wells is known as the Lobato field, and is practically within the city limits of Sao Salvador. The area 75 km. northwest of the city will be known as the Candeias field.

When the first Earth Resources Technology satellite (ERTS-A) is orbited by NASA next year, mineral exploration is expected to take a giant leap forward. There are many inherent advantages in going to space to study large regions of the earth, as existing space data have shown. A preview of what can be expected has already been provided by Gemini and Apollo color photographs taken over many parts of the world in the equatorial belt to 30ºN and S latitude. These comprehensive views cover some 100 sq mi, depicting prominent geologic features in a regional context. Placed side by side with mosaics of aerial photographs covering identical areas, the space pictures point up many inadequacies in the present airborne methods of data acquisition. To obtain a regional picture from aircraft, one must piece together many bits of data, and the final result suffers from variations in lighting and photographic reproduction that may obscure features important to the mineral explorer. By contrast, space photographs provide unsegmented synoptic views of large areas as they appear in a single instant under uniform lighting conditions.

A froth flotation plant to recover byproduct molybdenite must be designed specifically for the selected separation process and the type of ore being treated. However, some general rules concerning byproduct molybdenite plant design can be suggested that would be valid for most processes. The term byproduct molybdenite in this paper is limited to the recovery of molybdenite from copper porphyry ores, which essentially amounts to selectively separating molybdenite from copper and iron sulfide concentrates. In addition, most of the discussions would apply only to the almost universally used approach of floating the molybdenite and depressing the copper and iron sulfide minerals. Thickener It is considered essential that the feed to a byproduct molybdenite plant be thickened prior to being treated for molybdenite recovery for the following reasons: 1) Thickening allows the rougher and any preconditioning stages to be operated consistently at the optimum percent solids. 2) Generally, the size of equipment used for pretreatment and the rougher flotation is considerably smaller and less expensive than if the copper flotation concentrates were treated directly. 3) The removal of as much water as practical by thickening removes flotation reagents added in the copper flotation circuit, especially frother which can be quite troublesome in a byproduct molybdenite plant. Although thickening of the molybdenite plant feed has long been recognized as necessary to optimum metallurigcal results, very often this area has been designed poorly. The thickener should be sized so that it can produce a consistent thickened product containing 60 to 65% solids without the use of flocculants. Some plants are only able to thicken to 45 to 50% solids consistently while other plants let the percent solids vary from 45 to 60% over a 24-hr period. While the former is more desirable than the latter, in many cases better metallurgical results could be obtained if the percent solids could be held consistently close to 60%. Probably the simplest and most satisfactory system of handling the thickener underflow is to spigot it into a sump, using a sphincter type valve for the orifice, controlled by a density meter. Another satisfactory approach is to use an ODS type pump to meter the underflow. There are other methods of handling thickener underflow which work satisfactorily as long as the amount of copper concentrates entering the thickener is relatively uniform. However, they often fail to operate satisfactorily when there are large fluctuations in the thickener feed rate due to fluctuations in ore tonnage and/or copper grade. If the percent solids in the plant feed could be held close to 65%. There is the possibility the molybdenite plant tailing would not have to be thickened prior to the copper filter plant. This means that the molybdenite rougher float would have to be conducted at 45 to 50% solids with all the cleaner tailings returned to the rougher for dilution. Admittedly, in some situations this approach would be impossible, but if capital or plant area is limited, it should be considered.

TWENTY-TWO sections and all four of the divisions sent delegates to the annual meeting. They became so interested in the wide ranging dis6ussion of old and yet ever-new problems of Institute affairs that three instead of two sessions scheduled were necessary. Monday morning the meeting assembled with President Bassett presiding in the absence of President-elect Tally, who had been called to Baltimore by the serious illness of a brother. Thursday morning Vice-president Turner presided until Mr. Tally appeared after which the latter guided the sessions. Since reports from all of the active sections save one had been mimeographed and sent in advance to the delegates, detailed reports from each were dispensed with. The discussions dealt largely with membership problems, both local and national, with financing, speakers and programs, visits from national officers, and the conduct of the annual meeting. Many interesting and constructive suggestions were made and will be reported back to the sections by the delegates.

Gary Works No. 1 BOP Shop is a three furnace shop which went into operation December, 1965. The heat size is over 200 tons, with a substantial percentage of the production used to feed a Continuous Slab Caster. Vessels are driven by a shaft mounted bull gear and main housing utilizing eight 35 HP flange mounted motors and primary gear reducers. Torque absorption is controlled by two spring actuated torque arms. At 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 6, 1970, as "E" furnace was being turned down for a preliminary test, the drive side trunnion bearing failed. The furnace dropped slightly and shifted several inches north in the direction of the drive unit. The decision was made to tap the heat which was done without incident and the vessel uprighted. No attempt was made to completely drain the slag from the vessel, so as to avoid any further damage to the trunnion shaft bearing surface. The bearing failure occurred approximately four years and eight months after start up of the shop. Unfortunately ?M? furnace had gone down for a normal reline two days prior to the bearing failure, leaving the shop with only one operating furnace.

Ira B. Joralemon, one of the world's most noted mining geologists, died last year at the age of 91. "His long professional career," says Donald H. McLaughlin, chairman of the executive committee at Homestake Mining Co., "covered an epoch in the history of mining that was unique in its opportunities and achievements," adding that many mining companies (Bunker Hill, Bralorne Mining, Copper Range, Anaconda, Newmont, Phelps Dodge, Homestake, etc.) greatly benefited from Joralemon's experience and wisdom.

The petroleum industry is confronted with the problem of conservalion. This is not a simple problem in view of a wide difference of opinion among authorities as to whether conservation is necessary and the specific direction that it should take. Many writers accuse the petroleum industry of wasting the natural resources of the country. Others link the consuming public with the industry in this waste. Let us define our terms; agree, if possible, on where and when waste occurs in connection with either the recovery or use of petroleum and select such plans for conservation as appear most practical. A plan for conserv3tion which appears to be logical today may not meet the problem tomorrow. The conservation of petroleum is closely linked with the advancement of marly arts and sciences and as these advance, the plan of conservation has to change. The need for conservation does not necessarily rest upon the elimination of waste. There is not necessarily a fixed connection between waste and conservation. Conservation may be necessary or desirable although there is no waste. Definitions Waste: Useless or unnecessary expenditure. Conservation: The preservation of the natural resources for economical use. Both definitions contain adjectives the interpretation of which is extremely difficult. It is the determination of what expenditures are "unnecessary" or what uses are "economical" that will require study and agreement. If one lets his automobile engine run in cold weather in order to keep it hot, it is difficult to measure that necessity. If an automobile is driven two blocks, when the driver is physically capable of walking, what is the measure of necessity. This question is in the realm of one of the oldest of sociological problems, "What is a luxury?"—a problem which has not been solved. The history of society indicates that the measure of a man's wealth has been the measure of necessity. What he can afford to buy without stinting himself in some other direction, is not a luxury to him and, if it fulfills his desires, may be considered his necessity.

The accumulation of paraffin deposits in tubular goods has been recognized as a major production problem since the inception of the petroleum industry. This problem is not limited to any particular geographical area nor is it limited to a specific type of crude oil.' Generally speaking, "paraffin" deposition pertains to the deposition of any predominately organic material in flow lines, and possibly even at the sand face, which would hamper the production of oil. In some fields, a continuous effort is required to remove deposits of paraffin and in order to accomplish this, many unique methods have been devised. The best solution to this problem, however, is to prevent the formation of such deposits. One method which has been tried in a number of fields is the use of plastic pipe. The purpose of this investigation is to compare the relative effectiveness of several plastic materials to aid in the reduction or prevention of paraffin accumulations in surface flow lines. COMPOSITlON OF PARAFFIN DEPOSITS By definition, paraffin deposits are those materials which are insoluble in crude oil at the prevailing producing conditions of temperature and pressure. Such deposits1 s usually consist of small particles of petroleum wax intermixed with resins, asphaltic material, and crude oil. They may also contain a variety of foreign materials such as sand, silt, water, various metal oxides, sulfates and carbonates of iron. barium, and calcium. The petroleum waxes deposited in flow strings usually consist of both a "hard" and a "soft" wax fraction. These waxes are largely aliphatic hydrocarbons with smaller amounts of aromatic and naphthenic compounds. Nathan' has classified the hard and soft wax fractions. The aliphatic hydrocarbons present are those of high molecular weight with high melting points. Reistle3 pointed out that these high molecular weight compounds first separate from the oil due to a sharp decrease in solubility as the melting point increases. The identification of the resins and asphaltic materials rests, at present, on an arbitrary solubility procedure. Under certain conditions, materials which are insoluble in pentane (ASTM D-893) are defined as resins and asphalts. Subgrouping of these materials is made on decreasing solubility in benzene and carbon disul-fide. Shock' found some correlation be-tween the solvent response and the pentane insoluble content of paraftins: higher pentane insoluble fractions are less soluble in any of the commonly used commercial solvents. PARAFFIN CONTROL METHODS The methods used in oil fields to prevent and remove paraffin accumulations can be grouped into four general classes: (1) operative methods, (2) physical methods, (3) chemical methods, and (4) combination of any of these. Operative methods attempt to prevent the formation of paraffin deposits while the other methods are concerned primarily with the removal of these deposits. Plastic coated pipe has been used for a number of years to prevent cor- rosion in wells, and in manv instances paraffin deposits have -been greatly reduced. Field observations have indicated that plastic coated pipe not only reduced paraffin accumulation but in some cases eliminated deposition completely; however, data are needed to demonstrate the relative effectiveness of plastic materials. Deposition Apparatus The pipe used to determine the effect of velocity on rates of deposition was %- and 2-in. nominal diameter, and 5 ft in length. Steel, butyrate, rigid PVC, kralastic resin-type plastic pipes, epoxy coated pipe, PVC lined glass fiber pipe, and aluminum pipe were tested. Steel pipe was used as a control. Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of the apparatus showing the relative position of the separate units making up the equipment. In order to facilitate the installation and removal of the test pipes in the apparatus, O-ring seals capable of sustaining pressures of 50 psi were provided at each end. Test pipes were submerged in a cold water bath maintained at or below room temperature by circulating water through copper cooling coils packed in ice. A hot water bath equipped with immersion-type heaters, stirrers, and a thermoregulator was used to maintain the temperature of the oil prior to introduction into the piping manifold. The capacity of the oil reservoir was 30 gal. A 33-gal/min centrifugal pump, capable of producing turbulent flow velocities in the test pipes, was used to circulate the oil through the system when using %-in. pipe; and a 70-galjmin centrifugal pump was used in later tests using 2-in. pipe. (communication to the Secretary, February, 1897): I have read Mr. Austin's paper with considerable interest, more especially as the designing and study of such works have been an attractive occupation for me during the last twenty-five years. Mr. Austin says that a " plant on a terraced site has generally been considered the most advantageous," and also that " many advocate a level site," while he himself " is disposed to advocate a modification of the latter plan, utilizing an extended surface with a moderate slope."* Among the advocates of the terraced sites as against level ones, I do not recollect ever meeting a metallurgist who had even made an attempt to plan his works for level ground, or who had, in a lucid interval, figured how much he gained or lost by one or the other method. The average metallurgist starts with the assumption that it is rational to conduct his material down hill because its movement is aided by gravity, while to elevate ore or furnace-material by machinery he vaguely believes to be not alone wrong in principle, but also unnecessarily expensive. TO certain people the name of Northern Rhodesia brings only a vague recollection of a distant country somewhere in Africa; to others, it means a big game territory and the opportunity for excellent shooting; to some, a land of sunshine and peace; but to mining men the name signifies the land where the latest discoveries of copper ore are astonishing the mining world and bid fair, in a few years, to make Northern Rhodesia one of the largest copper- producing countries. There is a fascination about this part of the globe that is somewhat similar to southern California, and at the same time there is that feeling of mystery peculiar to a tropical climate. Perhaps it is the isolation, the fear of wild animals, or the influence of an undefinable something which cannot be expressed.

(communication to the Secretary*) :—In order to throw some light on this interesting subject, a series of experiments were made with strips of mild steel, containing about 0.14 per cent. of C and 0.22 per cent. of Ma. These strips were thoroughly cleaned and brightened before use, salts were added to distilled water until it corresponded as nearly as possible to the analysis given by Mr. Lee, and in this water at different temperatures were placed four strips of steel; while four other strips, at corresponding temperatures, were placed in the water used at the Washoe Reduction Works. The latter plant has had no trouble from corrosion of furnace-jackets, pipe-lines or boilers. The analysis of the water used at the Washoe works is: Grains er U. S. Gallon. CaCO3........... 2.92 CaSO3........... 0.76 MgCI3........... 0.64 MgCO3........... 0.58 A1203........... 0.12 Fe2O3........... 0.12 SiO2........... 0.58 NaCl........... 0.35 Organic matter, etc.,........ 1.16 7.23 This water is neutral to litmus; while the artificial Copper Queen water was very slightly alkaline, which Mr. Lee informs us is also true of the water at Douglas. Both waters mere well aerated by pouring from beaker to beaker, and by blowing in air from the experimenter's lungs. The results of these tests, given in Table I., show that there is no significant difference between the effects of the two waters.
