In determilling the relative rate and in fi~lding the point where different inlpurities containecl in copper-matte are eliminated during the process of a converter-blow, the follo~ving results were obtainecl : A converter was selected which was starting on its sccolld charge. EXISTING distribution data' for silicon between liquid iron and silver at steelmaking temperatures, 1500" to 1600°C, has made activity relationships in liquid silver-silicon alloys desirable as a method of determining the silicon activity in molten iron. To this end, through the use of radioactive Ag110 and the molecular beam technique described in a previous paper,' the vapor pressure of silver as a function of temperature has been measured over three silver-silicon alloys containing 3.9, 9.3, and 15.4 atomic pct (eutectic composition) silicon. The Sacaton open pit copper mine has recently been placed into production. Some problems have been encountered in maintaining grade control due to differences between early block estimates and actual production grade. A study was made using three methods for computing grade for 50' x 50' x 40' size blocks from exploration and development drill holes; 1) The polygonal method, 2) The inverse distance squared method, and 3) The geostatistical kriging method. The results of each were compared against a control block file created by using the assay results of all blast holes drilled in the ore over three benches of the new pit. Results indicate that the kriging technique gave better estimates for grade of individual blocks than did the other two methods for this particular deposit.

IN March 1949 the Calaveras Cement Co. was sued by five landowners whose properties are located in the vicinity of the plant. These landowners-all of them cattle ranchers-sued for dust damages of $120,338 and for an injunction preventing the company from casting dust upon their properties in injurious quantities. The issue was split, the jury deciding the amount of damages and the court handling the injunction features. The action came to trial before a jury in April of that year and resulted in damages being awarded in the amount of $7,508. A month later the court issued its injunction requiring recovery of stack dust to an 87 pct minimum.

Since World War II exploration geophysics has derived its scope from the following factors: first, the usual post-war interest in exploration to rebuild war-depleted reserves; second, the impetus supplied by the uranium prospecting boom; third, increased demand for natural resources due to the Korean War; fourth, the discovery of substantial metallic ore by geophysical means in Canada, the U. S., and other countries; and, finally, continuing discoveries of commercial oil by geophysical methods throughout the world. The past year's national business slump has severely curtailed mining exploration in general and correspondingly has brought about even greater reductions in applied geophysics in mining. Petroleum exploration, conceived and executed on a broader statistical basis than mining, has kept up its geophysical programs relatively well, although domestic work has been substantially reduced.

This article discusses methods of improving airborne capture by conventional dust suppression systems. The work was performed in a full-scale plywood model of a mine entry with a wooden mockup of a Joy 12 CM continuous miner. Dust was introduced at the front of the entry, and water sprays knocked down part of the dust cloud. Sampling in the return air determined the percentage dust reduction. Based on the results, guidelines are offered for continuous miner spray systems to control dust. Empirical relations have been developed to determine the effect of changes in water spray pressure on air movement, dust knockdown, and pollutant concentrations in the face return. Nozzle selection and arrangement are discussed for high dust knockdown efficiencies.

The bosh of No. 3 was originally the same as No. 2, the additional foot in diameter being the result of three months' cutting. Beginning with No. 1, which mas 5 feet 6 inches diameter, with tuyeres 5 feet 4 inches high, and cinder-tap four feet from bottom, great trouble was found in holding iron a proper length of time, four hours being the outside limit when working well, and two hours or less if working badly. During the early hours of Sunday morning last (the 6th inst.) there passed from our midst one of the most affable and estimable officers who, during our brief connection with the Depob, it has been our fortune to meet. Sidney A. Lang was born in Ontario in the year 1884 and lived in Toronto for a number of years. He ahtended Toronto University, where he displayed remarkable ability, and after graduating followed the profession of mining engineer. Being young and endowed with the spirit of adventure, he followed his profession in the mines of Chile and Peru; he could speak Spanish fluently. Always a reserved man, of refined tastes, it was difficult to induce him to relate some of his adventures in those countries so shrouded in mystery and romance. He joined the Canadian Engineers in Toronto as a sapper and shortly after came to this Depot.

ORIGINALLY the Babbitt experimental plant grinding circuit consisted of one rod mill 101/2 ft diam by 12 ft long in open circuit followed by two ball mills 101/2 ft diam* 12 ft long in parallel cir- the slow-speed ball mills. The next step was to improve rod mill operation by changing the speed of this mill. Such an attack would affect only one mill and would allow slower speed on the ball mills. The rod mill, as originally purchased, operated at 15.45 rpm. Additional pinions were purchased to test this mill at 16.45, 17.45, and 18.45 rpm. When the mill speed was increased by the use of these pinions, rod breakage with this short mill increased out of all proportion to the improved grinding, until at 18.45 rpm breakage became as high as 7 lb per

The flotation and, more importantly, the depression of calcite has been extensively studied, especially in terms of collector, pH, and metal ions. A basic laboratory study was undertaken to determine the effect of metal cation, pH, and hydrosol concentration on the flotation of calcite. Results indicate that at constant pH and soluble-silicate and metal-ion concentration, flotation of calcite decreases in the order: [ ] In the case of metal-silicate hydrosols, a higher pH of formation results in higher calcite flotation recovery. Data are insufficient to permit any conclusions regarding the behavior of mono- and trivalent ions. Possible theories to explain the foregoing observations are developed in the paper.

"For his creative efforts in explaining the electrochemistry of sulfide mineral leaching systems." Leaching reactions that occur during the dissolution of selected base metal sulfides and metals are considered in terms of surface reactions and the influence of intermediate or final products formed. These products may be solid layers, requiring solid phase diffusion for the reaction to proceed, or ions in solution that can influence the kinetics by controlling the mixed potential of the solid. Three general types of reactions are proposed to explain observed rates of reaction. Examples are presented for non-oxidative and oxidative leaching of galena (PbS), anodic dissolution and oxidative leaching of molybdenite (MoS2) and cyanidation of silver and gold.

IN recent years the constitution of the high-silver aluminum-silver alloys has been extensively investigated. Hansen1 has re-viewed the literature to 1935. More re-ently, Obinata and Hagiya,2 Hofmann and Volk,3 Taziri4 and Tishchenko5 have con-firmed the general features of the phase diagram in the region around 25 atomic per cent aluminum. In this paper we present the results of high-precision measurements of lattice con-stants of the silver-rich alpha solid solution in the homogeneous range and the neigh-boring two-phase regions. These results are used to establish the nature of the solid solution, the identity of directly measured densities with those calculated from lattice constants and the homogeneity limits of the alpha solid solution with respect to three different neighboring phases. A study of the earlier investigations indicated that the last two subjects in particular required new and accurate data.

Gravitational field anomalies have been observed over many igneous intrusives of medium (4000 sq km) to small (100 sq km) size in outcrop area. These studies give good results because the residual anomalies can be separated from larger-scale crustal anomalies and density contrasts usually are present. Although unique solutions are not possible, the analysis of the gravity anomalies place important limits on both the areal and depth extent of the intrusive bodies. Of all possible geophysical techniques, gravity studies offer the most promise in the determination of the shape in depth of intrusive bodies.
