The fall meeting of the. Institute of Metals Division will be held in Philadelphia on Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. All meetings will be held in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Broad and Walnut Streets, which is also the hotel headquarters. As this meeting is being held in conjunction with the meeting of the American Foundrymen's Association, the members of the Institute will have the privileges of the exhibit of the Foundrymen's Association. This, it is expected, will be one of the largest exhibits made in this country. On Monday evening, Sept. 29, there will be a meeting, in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, of former officers and members of the Executive Committee of the Institute. It is requested that all officers and Committee members, the present as well as the past, will arrange to be present.

MORE and more hydrocyclones are being installed in beneficiation plants. This recent rapid increase is of special interest in the history of beneficiation, since development of the hydro- cyclone appears to have swung in a circle. To avoid any chance of confusion, it would be well first to review the accepted definitions. The size of a cyclone is expressed as the diameter of the cylindrical section. Size of the inlet orifice- which may be circular, square, or rectangular- is expressed as a diameter, or as width and length, or as an area (in square inches). The angle of a cyclone is expressed as the total included angle. The overflow or finest classification fraction leaves the cyclone through the vortex finder. The underflow or coarsest classification fraction leaves through the apex opening.

A novel two-stage froth flotation process for the recovery of pure magnesite from low grade ores is described. The process consists of a first-stage, magnesite flotation step where a rougher magnesite concentrate is floated with amine collectors. The first-stage froth concentrate is then repulped in fresh water, and quartenary ammonium salt and fuel oil are added to float the remaining impurities. The results from laboratory batch tests show that a high-grade magnesite concentrate assaying 0.99-0.20% Si02 and 2.84-0.46%a Ca0 can be produced. Regulation of the variables controlling magnesite froth flotation also allows the variation of the ratio % Ca0: % SiO2, between the acceptable limits 0.32 to 5.79. This ratio is important to the quality of dead-burned magnesite.

MOST roof bolts are used in mines with bedded roofs, but it has not been determined to what degree thin-bedded roofs can be reinforced by bolting if there is no thick member in which to anchor the bolts, or what function the bolts must perform in such a case. Owing to widespread practice of sys- tematic bolting to support thin-bedded roofs, moreover, it is desirable to design roof-bolting systems on a quantitative basis. Specifically, a solution to the following problem is required: For a roof composed of beds of given thickness and physical properties, what is the optimum length, spacing, orientation, and tightness of bolts consistent with safety and economy? The investigation reviewed here has produced a functional equation to evaluate these variables and establish basic principles of roof bolting.

The discovery of prolific oil wells in old territory hitherto regarded as doubtful, if not worthless, and the rapid extension of a gas pool opened late in 1938 were the most interesting petroleum features in West Virginia during 1939. Oil activity in general was slow because of crude prices that were still fairly low at the end of the year, although substantially increased above those in January. Fewer oil wells were completed, but the average results were better than in 1938. Fewer gas wells, also, were completed, with greatly lessened average initial production. Many old oil and gas wells were abandoned, so that the total number of active wells has not changed appreciably. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other sources, shows that 561 new wells were drilled, resulting in 101 new oil wells with 2261 bbl. of daily initial production; 366 new gas wells with 602,400,000 cu. ft. of daily open flow; and 94 dry holes. Besides these new wells, 61 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 12 bbl. and 13,328,000 cn. ft. of added production. On the new wells the oil average was 22.38 bbl. per well per day; and the gas average was 1,645,900 cu. ft. per well per day; the ratio of dry holes to completions was 16.76 per cent. From an exploratory standpoint one partly discredited oil area was revived by good new production, and another small oil pool may have been opened. Some of the results in gas exploration will require more drilling for true appraisal. It is certain, though, that one very considerable gas field in the sands of Mississippian age has been proved; and there is a probability of six new pools in the Middle Devonian shale. In the Oriskany sand (L. Dev.) the Elk-Poca pool has been extended considerably farther northwest into Jackson County; and farther north in Jackson County two widely separated wells, which may be pool openers, have been successfully completed. On the other hand, several important wildcats in various counties have been dry. Stratigraphically lower, some additional wells have been completed in the Newburg sand (Sil.) and one small producer has been completed in the Clinton sand (Sil.), the importance of which can scarcely be overestimated, because no Clinton production has previously been found in the state, although at least seven wells have been drilled through the sand.

Discussion of the paper of W. P. LASS, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 103, July, 1915, pp. 1443 to 1447. ROBERT M. KEENEY, Somersville, Conn. (communication to the Secretary *).-There is not only a possibility of improvement in present methods of treatment of the byproducts of refining in the cyanide plant by the use of the electric furnace, but also in melting and refining of gold precipitate. This interesting paper by Mr. Lass shows an electric furnace in successful operation in a large plant for the treatment of by-products. Electric melting of cyanide precipitate is a cheaper form of treatment in many cases than any of the combustion methods now used because of the high cost of oil, coke or coal in many camps, while on the other hand electric power may be had cheaply, especially in a place where there is possibility of development of high-head hydro-electric plants for power purposes. Also, if the oil-fired tilting furnace is used for direct melting of the precipitate, as is the case at many small mills, a great saving in cost is made by the use of the electric furnace because of the high crucible cost in melting with the tilting furnace. A study of this paper indicates the cost of the operation approximately. Consider all the fluxes to be turned in as byproducts and coke at $18 per ton.

Mother Earth has had a long life extending over two billion years, during which time she has changed from a mass of incandescent gases to her present form, exhibiting a density stratification from the extremely tenuous gases of the stratosphere to the heavy central nickeliron core. Man is now mining all the principal divisions of Mother Earth except the centrosphere. Nitrogen, oxygen, neon, and other rarer gases are being recovered from the air; magnesium, bromium, potash, borates, and other salts from lakes and seas; brines, medicinal mineral waters, and great quantities of water for domestic and industrial uses from surface and subsurface reservoirs; and, from the rocky crust, many minerals and fuels for our present industrial civilization as well as plants and animals for food and shelter. Productivity of soil is influenced both positively and negatively by man. There is some cause to bewail what may be considered a wasteful influence of men on soil. The general situation is bad in spots but not hopeless. The passing of large areas of fertile land in some areas is merely to be noted and not to be mourned. These lands could not have been used without decrease in their fertility. The productivity factor is affected by human activities. Many soils in the eastern and southern states are far richer and more productive now than they were at any previous time. Arctic soils are not productive

SURFACE effects in the deformation of metal single crystals have been noted by a variety of workers.&apos; A large majority of these experiments have used surface roughening or a second chemical constituent at the surface. We performed the following experiment to see how the presence of a fine polycrystalline layer influenced the stress-strain behavior of single crystals of zinc. Spherical single crystals oriented for single slip were acid-machined into cylindrical dumbbell-shape shear specimens having a gage length of 3.2 mm and a cross section of 20 sq mm. The crystals were then deformed varying amounts at the surface of the gage section with emery paper. Following this treatment, the crystals were heated for approximately 8 hr at 200°C. This resulted in a polycrystalline surface layer, with an observed grain size of approximately 1/10 mm in diameter. Deformation of these crystals was undertaken at 78°K in pure shear, the shear direction <1120> lying in the basal plane. The deformation apparatus has been described elsewhere.2 The presence of a polycrystalline layer markedly raises the first observed plastic deformation, as can be seen from Fig. 1. This yield stress is then followed by a region of low work hardening comparable to that observed in shear tests on similar untreated zinc single crystals. However, the extent of easy glide is quite seriously curtailed, and is followed by a more rapid increase in work hardening, reminiscent of Stage II observed in the deformation of fcc crystals. The higher yield can probably be attributed to the difficulty of penetrating the grain boundaries by dis locations from sources interior to the boundaries. If we associate this yield stress with this breakthrough, then we might expect that more dislocations would be trapped in the crystal than is normally the case. If there is an increased density of trapped dislocations, this could lead to an increase in the amount of trapping with increasing strain, giving a larger strain hardening in the crystal. Although other explanations can be given, it is quite tempting to characterize the region of increased work hardening as a manifestation of Stage II-type deformation. This seems reasonable if the polycrystalline layer is quite efficient in holding up a large number of dislocations. In zinc crystals, since it is well-known that the slip distance can be as large as the specimen dimensions, one would only expect to entrap a large number of dislocation with very large crystals or by applying surface layers. If this interpretation of increased strain hardening is correct, it might present a method of studying Stage II in single crystals of zinc. * A complete magnetic picture of the Mesabi range is now available for the first time with the release of 21 additional maps based on the aeromagnetic survey of 30,000 square miles made jointly by the USGS and the Minnesota Geological Survey. A potential iron formation with a magnetic pattern remarkably like that of the Mesabi iron range lies buried beneath the glacial drift in a wide belt extending some 30 miles across the northwest corner of Itasca County in north central Minnesota. Identification of three new uranium minerals by the USGS was recently announced. The new minerals, andersonite, swartzite, and bayleyite are, respectively, hydrous uranyl carbonates of magnesium, of sodium and calcium, and of calcium and magnesium. They were first observed by Charles A. Anderson, Survey geologist, in a coating on gypsum on the 300-ft level of the Hillside mine, Yavapai County, Arizona. International Minerals and Chemical Corp. has announced a $4,000,000 expansion and development program in the Polk County phosphate fields in Florida, Plants for the manufacture of multiple superphosphate and phosphate chemicals including dicalcium p osphate for animal feed and chemical purposes, and a sulphuric acid are planned. Office building, machine shop, warehouse, and laboratory are also scheduled for erection. A new type of tramp iron detector is being used on the conveyor belt feeder at the South Agnew stripping operation. It is made of an alloy of aluminum, nickel and cobalt and does not have any electric coils. The alloy, known as Alnico, is remarkable for the permanence and intensity of the magnetism which it retains. The detector was made by Dings Magnetic Separator Co. and it is probable that Alnico will be used in magnetic separators. The American Society of Engineering Education estimates that unless the percentage of high school graduates entering engineering colleges is increased, there is a strong possibility that instead of a large surplus of engineering graduates, which has been propehsied rather widely, there will soon be fewer engineering graduates available than are needed annually by our national economy. This conclusion is reached from a survey that shows that engineering enrollments are only slightly higher than prewar whereas industrial expansion is increasing the need for engineers. * The natural resources of Korea are being investigated under ECA sponsorship. E.J. Longyear has just embarked 8 crews for that country; two drills are scheduled for base metal search while six are slated for development of coal reserves. An innovation in the development work in the iron country has been the adoption of the Drill-Mobile, jumbo-mounted drills on rubber-tired carriage, by Cleveland-Cliffs at the Mather A and B mines. The machine is being used to cut stations in the new Mathed B shaft and for driving development headings at the Mather A.

No important producing developments took place in Colombia during the year 1928. This was at least partly due to the paralysis of operations by the passage, during the latter part of 1927, of a law which was regarded by the oil companies as confiscatory and unjust, and the promulgation of exceedingly stringent regulations of this law under decree No. 150, published Jan. 28, 1928. This decree, which contained 24 articles, practically prevented not only producing operations by the oil companies but even such activities as geological explorations and surveying, as severe fines were imposed for the possession of maps not registered with the Ministry of Industries. Both this regulatory decree and the law were subject to attack in the courts by several of the oil companies. The regulatory decree was suspended May 22 by Presidential proclamation, until the suits against it are decided by the Supreme Court and Council of State. Though another law was introduced into the Colombian Congress at a later date, no action was taken on it, and at the time of the writing of this paper, it would appear that no oil bill will pass the Colombian Congress during the present session. The Barco concession, which was revoked in February, 1926, still continues an unsettled matter, although there have been rumors that the government was attempting to come to some decision on this rather difficult question. A hopeful sign toward the close of the year was the settlement of negotiations with the Tropical Oil Co. over the acceptance of the payment for royalties due the government from that company. This settlement, which covered a royalty on crude oil produced from June 30, 1926 to June 30, 1928, represented a cash payment for approximately 3,000,000 barrels. It is to be hoped that during the coming year the Colombian government will see its way clear to clarify its position on petroleum legislation. A good augury for the future was the statement made by President Abadia Mendez on New Year&apos;s Day, in which he courageously admitted the errors of previous legislation and said, regarding oil, "Very soon

Some time ago a study was initiated at the Colorado School of Mines in an effort to arrive at a better understanding of the stress fields developed within drill bits under dynamic loading and the influence that these stress fields could have on the failure of the bits. Particular emphasis has been given to the influence that bit shape has on the establishment of highly localized, potentially destructive stress inhomogeneities within the bit. The study has been divided into three phases involving three velocity regimes: impacts at very low velocities, 0 to 20 ft/sec, a velocity range in which dynamic effects are just beginning to be found; impacts at velocities ranging from 20 to several hundred ft/sec, a range commonly encountered in practical drilling operations; and impulsive loading through the detonation of explosives, a region in which the dynamic effects are greatly exaggerated and made more identifiable. The ultimate objective is to provide basic data which will enable the mitigation through judicious design of the frequency and severity of these transient concentrations of intense stress, thereby prolonging and increasing drill efficiency. This paper presents results of the third phase of this study — the development of a better understanding of the dynamics and mechanics of failures caused by transient stress-wave interactions. The impulsive loading or transient waves in these experiments were generated by detonating small explosive charges placed on the ends of Plexiglas cylindrical rods terminating in truncated cones. Under such intense loading, dynamic effects are greatly exaggerated and, hence, made more identifiable. The explosion generates a high-intensity transient stress disturbance which moves through the rod, reflects from surfaces which lie in its path, and establishes momentarily narrow regions of high concentrations of stress where failure of fracture may occur. The peregrinations of these waves, their interactions and their effects have already been described in the literature (see, for example, Refs. 1 and 2). The locations and extent of the regions quite apparently are strongly dependent on specimen shape, making it possible through judicious shaping of specimens to relocate the highly stressed regions, minimize their extent, or eliminate them entirely. These experiments were designed, first, to identify more clearly the vulnerable regions in geometries relevant to drill-bit design and, then, to modify these regions in a predictable way by changing specimen shape. Through this latter process, it is anticipated that better bit design might evolve. The specimens used in the experiments were cylindrical rods, 1 1/2 and 1 1/8 in. in diameter, ended by a truncated cone, with the cone angles ranging from 45° to 130°. Upper cone face diameters were 1/2, 3/4, or 1 in. A small plastic-covered electric blasting cap detonated on the axis of the specimen produced the spherical shock wave. The detonators used were Olin Mathieson No. 6, which induced into the rod a transient saw-toothed stress disturbance of about 3-microseconds duration, corresponding to a wave length of 0.3 in. in the Plexiglas. Five distinct systems of fracture were observed: (1) along the axis of the rod, a lower system of fractures, the cracks focusing around one point for specimens having cone angles of 80° and 90° and, as the cone angle was increased, spreading downward; (2) just above these fractures, an upper system of fractures composed of horizontal cracks observable in some specimens but not of any appreciable extent; (3) a third system of axial cracks still above the latter, observable in the small cone-angle specimens; (4) in the upper part of the specimen, a system of radial fractures extending from the blasting point; and (5) circular spalling due to reflection of the wave on the boundary of the cylinder. Only the first three systems, the axial fractures, are examined here. LOWER TENSILE FRACTURE SYSTEM The first, lower system of tensile fractures, shown in the photograph of Fig. 1, was observed in almost all of the specimens. Wide attention is being placed upon various methods for cleaning the fine sizes of bituminous coals. The author describes and analyzes the results achieved on wet concentrating tables of modern design on unclassified feeds of —Vz in. particle sizes, including tests on high-sulphur coals. THE increased economic necessity of cleaning the small sizes of coal has forced wide attention upon various methods or processes being used. Although numerous cleaning plants in the past have been cleaning coal smaller than Vz or % in., the large quantities of higher ash fines being produced by mechanical mining and the need for cleaner coal under competitive market conditions have brought about many new installations of fine-coal cleaning plants. Of various methods used, one of the more popular types is the wet concentrating table. Approximately 525 tables have been installed in the United States in the past four years of which 320 have been installed in 20, large new plants. There are now probably 1600 tables of all types in existence in this country for cleaning coal. The purpose of this paper is to describe the cleaning of fine coal by wet concentrating tables. Its scope is confined to a discussion of the theory of tabling and some of the factors entering into tabling action, a description of the Deister SuperDuty diagonal-deck coal table and a discussion of the results of tabling various fine sizes of coals. Al- though tables have been used for cleaning coal as coarse as 2 in. and favorable results are reported, this paper is limited to reporting on the results of cleaning coal fines from 1/2 in. down. Also, although it is well known that the performance of tables is even superior under classified or closely sized feed conditions, this paper concerns itself with the results achieved by tabling unclassified feeds. History of Wet Concentrating Tables The wet concentration of minerals by some form of tabling is quite old, starting originally from fixed, smooth surfaced, tilted boards taking advantage of the laminar flow of liquid films and the separation of minerals according to specific gravity. By taking advantage of the fundamental difference between screening and classification—namely, that specific gravity has no effect on screening but is one of the important factors in classification—a combination of the two may be used as a process of mineral concentration. Although this fact is not new, so far as is known it has had little or no commercial application. The scheme is not presented now as a process for producing finished products but rather as a preliminary operation rejecting part of the barren material from an ore before it is subjected to more costly treatment. That is largely the function of the new heavy-media concentration processes that have been widely accepted. Original installation costs for the present sink-float processes are relatively high, however, which confines their use to operations where large tonnages are handled. Sink-float has been successful on only the relatively coarse (approximately plus 10-mesh) portion of an ore, and it is in this same range that classification screening can function most satisfactorily. Theoretically, there is no upper limit to the size of particles that can be handled in a sink-float operation, but the degree of liberation in the very large pieces usually limits this. With classification screening, particles from % to % in. would be the largest that could be handled, but the lower range could be extended somewhat below 10 mesh. In order to take full advantage of the difference in specific gravities of the minerals being separated, sorting in the classifier should be under as extreme hindered-settling conditions as possible. Laboratory tests have been made on a galena ore and on an artificial mixture of quartz and magnesite to determine the separations that may be expected. Although more than one scheme may be followed, in these tests the separations were made by cutting the underflow from the classifier as a concentrate and then screening the overflow. By taking advantage of the fundamental difference between screening and classification—namely, that specific gravity has no effect on screening but is one of the important factors in classification—a combination of the two may be used as a process of mineral concentration. Although this fact is not new, so far as is known it has had little or no commercial application. The scheme is not presented now as a process for producing finished products but rather as a preliminary operation rejecting part of the barren material from an ore before it is subjected to more costly treatment. That is largely the function of the new heavy-media concentration processes that have been widely accepted. Original installation costs for the present sink-float processes are relatively high, however, which confines their use to operations where large tonnages are handled. Sink-float has been successful on only the relatively coarse (approximately plus 10-mesh) portion of an ore, and it is in this same range that classification screening can function most satisfactorily. Theoretically, there is no upper limit to the size of particles that can be handled in a sink-float operation, but the degree of liberation in the very large pieces usually limits this. With classification screening, particles from % to % in. would be the largest that could be handled, but the lower range could be extended somewhat below 10 mesh. In order to take full advantage of the difference in specific gravities of the minerals being separated, sorting in the classifier should be under as extreme hindered-settling conditions as possible. Laboratory tests have been made on a galena ore and on an artificial mixture of quartz and magnesite to determine the separations that may be expected. Although more than one scheme may be followed, in these tests the separations were made by cutting the underflow from the classifier as a concentrate and then screening the overflow. Wide attention is being placed upon various methods for cleaning the fine sizes of bituminous coals. The author describes and analyzes the results achieved on wet concentrating tables of modern design on unclassified feeds of —Vz in. particle sizes, including tests on high-sulphur coals. THE increased economic necessity of cleaning the small sizes of coal has forced wide attention upon various methods or processes being used. Although numerous cleaning plants in the past have been cleaning coal smaller than Vz or % in., the large quantities of higher ash fines being produced by mechanical mining and the need for cleaner coal under competitive market conditions have brought about many new installations of fine-coal cleaning plants. Of various methods used, one of the more popular types is the wet concentrating table. Approximately 525 tables have been installed in the United States in the past four years of which 320 have been installed in 20, large new plants. There are now probably 1600 tables of all types in existence in this country for cleaning coal. The purpose of this paper is to describe the cleaning of fine coal by wet concentrating tables. Its scope is confined to a discussion of the theory of tabling and some of the factors entering into tabling action, a description of the Deister SuperDuty diagonal-deck coal table and a discussion of the results of tabling various fine sizes of coals. Al- though tables have been used for cleaning coal as coarse as 2 in. and favorable results are reported, this paper is limited to reporting on the results of cleaning coal fines from 1/2 in. down. Also, although it is well known that the performance of tables is even superior under classified or closely sized feed conditions, this paper concerns itself with the results achieved by tabling unclassified feeds. History of Wet Concentrating Tables The wet concentration of minerals by some form of tabling is quite old, starting originally from fixed, smooth surfaced, tilted boards taking advantage of the laminar flow of liquid films and the separation of minerals according to specific gravity. This paper describes the operation of two kerosine flotation plants in Alabama for cleaning —10 mesh bituminous coal. One plant treats washer sludge, the other raw coal. Data on capacity efficiency and capital and operating costs is given. Methods for increasing cell capacity are discussed. IN cleaning coal it has long been recognized that methods which give excellent results for the coarser sizes may give poor or even no cleaning for the finer sizes. Effective cleaning of the fines, therefore, is usually a separate and distinct problem. For many years the problem of fines was considered of relatively minor importance. Now there is growing interest in methods of cleaning the fine sizes of coal because: 1. There are more fines. Increasing mechanization and the adoption of full seam mining methods have resulted in the production of a greater percentage of smaller particles than were produced by hand loading methods. 2. The fines have deteriorated in quality. The same causes that have led to increased quantity have also operated to decrease quality through greater contamination with slate, rock, and other diluents. 3. The fines have become more valuable. When coal was comparatively cheap, loss of the finer sizes was tolerated but, with the rapid increase in the cost of mining coal, it has become imperative that the maximum amount of clean coal be recovered from the mixture of coal and rock delivered to the tipple. 4. In many cases, the fines have become a stream pollution problem. Increasing governmental activity and legislation to prevent stream pollution often have made it necessary to retain the fine material which formerly was permitted to escape with the washer effluent into flowing streams. The Sloss-Sheffield Steel and Iron Co. operates four coal mines, all within a 20-mile radius of Birmingham, Ala., with a total annual production of 1,-250,000 tons of washed coal. Three of these mines are in the Mary Lee seam and one in the Jefferson seam. Although some steam and domestic coals are produced, the major portion of the coal is used to make coke for blast furnace operation. Fine coal is desirable for coking, and all the coal so used by Sloss is crushed to 1/4 in. Therefore, there is no problem of an outlet for even the finest sizes of coal. Since the coal is used for metallurgical purposes, low ash is of greater importance than would be the case if it were used for steam generation or domestic heating. Based on present blast furnace practice at Sloss, it is calculated that each percentage of ash in the coal carries a penalty of $0.22 per ton of coal. Thus there is a considerable margin for operating costs in a fine coal cleaning method that will result in materially lowering the ash content of the cleaned coal. Development of Fine Coal Cleaning Problem In 1942 Sloss reopened its Bessie mine and constructed at this location a new preparation plant to clean 11/4 in. x 0 coal from the Mary Lee seam.
