Six or seven years ago the United States Bureau of Mines started development of instruments for the purpose of accurately measuring the vibrational movement of the earth in the vicinity of quarry blasts. For this work a new type of seismometer has been developed. A number of these have been constructed, the accessory field equipment has been assembled, and approximately 200 field tests of actual quarry, blasts have been made. The results of some of these tests have been published 2/ and others are the subject of two manuscripts now in preparation. So far the attention of the investigation has been centered on ascertaining the characteristics and behavior of the ground vibrations. Occasionally, when opportunity arose, measurements of the vibrations occurring in houses or other structures caused by-quarry blasts were made, but without any attempt at direct correlation or interpretation. During 1936 the National Bureau of Standards conducted some experiments to determine the normal vibrations to which the wells and floors of buildings are subject. Cooperation of the Bureau of Mines was requested in measuring the displace-ment. This afforded an opportunity to study the affect of mechanically induced vibrations end make limited comparison with previous records of vibrations from blasting. This paper deals with the experiments made in cooperation with the Bureau of Standards and includes some comparisons with effects from quarry shots. The results are in the nature of a progress report only, and are not intended to draw definite conclusions. These tests were concerned with the determination of the maximum amplitudes of vibration possible in the floors and walls of a typical dwelling when subjected to commonly experienced vibrations. The dwelling tested was obtained by the National Bureau of Standards. It was a large four-story stucco building, 41 ft. south of the southerly curb of Park Road, in Washington, D.C., which was constructed about 1900 and was supported on overburden. The basement floor elevation was approximately that of the pavement of Park Road, Park Road runs east and west; the front door of the house faced north.

In order to obtain a better insight into the pressure-volume relationship of reservoir rocks a theory of pore and rock bulk volume variations is presented. The theory is independent of the shape of the pores but is restricted to isotropic porous media built up of continuous homogeneous matrix material. The main conclusion obtained from this theory is that only three elastic constants and three viscous constants are required for describing pore and rock bulk volume variations if the porosity is explicitly introduced into the treatment. In addition, reasonable approximations are introduced for various types of reservoir rock, e.g., sandstones, limestones, and shales, which lead to further simplifications of the basic formulas. In consequence there is then a further reduction in the number of deformation constants which have to be determined experimentally. It is shown how measurements of these remaining deformation constants can be performed most conveniently. Finally the application of the theory to reservoir studies is discussed and the translation of experimental results obtained in the laboratory into reservoir behavior is considered. INTRODUCTION The decline of fluid pressure in connection with the withdrawal of fluid from an underground reservoir gives rise to a change in volume of both reservoir fluids and reservoir rock. The volume variation of the reservoir rock results in a decrease of both the pore volume and the total volume of the fluid-filled formation. Whereas the variation in volume of the reservoir fluids with pressure is usually known from PVT analysis, that in the volume of the porous medium is rarely measured, as it is considered of minor importance in reservoir engineering. Nevertheless, certain experimental results' suggest that in a number of cases the neglection of the variation in pore volume may introduce errors into material balance calculations of reservoirs producing above the bubble point. Only a few experimental results on the compressibility of porous rocks have been published. The compressibility of pure quartz and of calcite can be found in a paper by Adams and Williamson'. Botset and Reed' carried out some experiments on the compressibility of loose sands, while Carpenter and Spencer' measured the compressibility of a number of consolidated sandstones, which data were supplemented by Hughes and Cooke5. Hall' finally reported a number of experiments designed to study the influence of the porosity on the compressibility of oil-bearing formations, from which it appeared that, particularly in the low porosity range, the compressibility of the pore volume is important enough to be taken into account. Difficulties, however, arise in applying these experimental results to field cases. This is partly due to the fragmentary nature of the published data. Yet even if more complete data were available, the need for a theoretical background would be strongly felt. Such a background can be partially found in studies carried out by Biot,6,7 who published a theory of elastic deformations of porous materials and their influence on fluid displacement within the pores, by Lubinski8, who studied the stress distribution in an elastic porous medium neglecting pore compressibility, and by Gass-mann" who mathematically analysed the elasticity of packings of spheres. The contributions of Biot intro-duce a number of deformation constants which are impractical for reservoir rocks from an aspect of experi-mental determination. The problem of heat treating high-speed steel becomes more and more important as the design of cutters becomes more and more complicated in increasing the efficiency of mechanical operations. Hundreds of dollars' are spent in the design and manufacture-of milling cutters of special form ,for rapid production of duplicate or interchangeable parts, and then, as the heat treatment is faulty on the one hand, or scientifically executed on the other, the tool fails after a few operations, or its efficiency is greatly increased. The practical operation of giving these complicated tools the right temperature necessary to bring out the best cutting qualities, and at the same time bring the tool out "clean," is a difficult: one and calls for no small amount of skill. In order to be on the safe side, the average tool hardener uses a temperature much too low to give the best results with the high-speed steel he uses. In the case of cutters which are finished to a given diameter before hardening, it is impossible to grind the tool after hardening, so that it is essential that the surface be-protected from oxidizing or de-carbonizing. It is the aim of this paper to describe some experiments on hardening high-speed steel, in which metallographic means were used to determine the correct hardening temperatures. The accompanying table and plates show the results of hardening experiments on five different high-speed steels. Population growth in industrialized economies constitutes an automatic stimulus for expansion of the construction and chemical processing industries, which are a big market for industrial minerals. Of the total value of mineral production in the United States, excluding fuels, about 70 % results from the production of industrial minerals. The value of industrial mineral production rose more than 10 % between 1961 and 1962. A similar growth has occurred during 1963. During the decade 1952-1962, the production of industrial minerals increased in value by 98%, in contrast to an increase of 60% in the value of the gross national product. The accompanying table shows the percentage change in the production of various industrial minerals from 1952-1962, as well as from 1961-1962.

He then went to Princeton and was granted his doctor's degree in physical chemistry in 1924. Two years as head of the department of chemistry at Juniata College, followed by a like period as National Research fellow at Harvard, working with T. W. Richards and Albert Sauveuir, satisfied Bob's immediate affections for college and university life and prepared him to turn temporarily to other fields.

Combination of gravity data and density logs makes it possible to determine the structural relief. Under a wide class of geologic conditions, the solution is unique, or limited to a single parametric system of solutions. As a useful byproduct, the method yields a new way to construct derivative maps, continue the field up or down, subtract regional anomalies, and perform smoothing. In the past, the problem of interpreting gravity anomalies in terms of structural geology was solved along two main lines: 1) A body of a certain shape and density contrast was assumed and the corresponding gravity anomaly calculated, analytically for simple bodies, graphically and/or numerically for more complex ones; then the computed anomaly was compared with the observed one, and the assumed shape corrected according to the differences between the two. 2) The anomaly is assumed to come from a warped interface between two media of different density; the relief of the warping is assumed small compared to the depth of burial, so that the structure can be approximated by a flat horizontal surface of variable density distribution. The first method is a standard technique, described in every text book on applied geophysics, and is well applicable, for bodies with predominant vertical dimension. The second one, probably first used by Tsuboi and Fuchida,' is mathematically more elegant. It applies to the fashionable field of integral transforms (Bullard and Cooper, 2 Tomoda and Aki, 3 Dean 4) and is useful mainly in cases when the vertical relief of the structures is comparatively small. 30th methods, tacitly or openly, assume a density discontinuity across the boundary of the two media, while within each medium the density is constant. A review of the movement of coal in water is undertaken from a practical rather than a theoretical view point. Installations are described in which coal is transported on gradients down to 2.5' and others which move coal at a water-coal ratio of 1:l by weight. The water cycle of the hydraulic mining system is discussed. In many applications this can be a closed circuit. The coal dewatering system is illustrated, making particular reference to the problems of storage of coal-water mixtures between the mine and the plant. Water treatment is done in thickeners down to 100 ppm which is normally sufficient for re-circulating through high pressure pumps and monitors.

Meramec Mining Co., a joint venture of Bethlehem Steel Corp. and St. Joe Minerals Corp., mines and pelletizes iron ore at the Pea Ridge mine. The Pea Ridge property is located near Sullivan, Miss., about 113 km (70 miles) southwest of St. Louis. The ore body was delineated in the mid-1950's by St. Joe during a lead exploration program. The first test holes drilled on the Pea Ridge magnetic anomaly revealed the presence of a large magnetite deposit; further drilling in 1956 and 1957 confirmed that the ore body was mineable. Meramec Mining Co. was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began late in the year. Production began in April 1964. The ore body is overlain by about 400 m (1300 ft) of flat-bedded sediments. It is tabular, about 800 m (2600 ft) long and up to 180 m (1600 ft) thick. It dips about 80° and is of unknown depth. The ore is mainly high-grade magnetite with small zones of specular hematite. The wall rock is a Precambrian rhyolite porphyry.

Butte mining district contains extensive manganese vein deposits forming a peripheral zone. Oxidation in the veins studied usually extends to a depth of about 75 ft. Secondary minerals formed by oxidation were found to be ramsdellite—always accompanied by intermixed pyrolusite—and cryptomelane. Enrichment of the gossan is accomplished by reduction of weight upon oxidation; theoretical enrichment is 32.2 pct. Additional enrichment is caused by leaching of soluble minerals, particularly calcium and magnesium carbonates. BUTTE mining district contains extensive manganese vein deposits in the outer zone, surrounding the copper and zinc deposits and corresponding to the well known silver zone. This article describes the mineralogy of the manganese veins, the oxidation and enrichment processes, and the use of this information in prospecting. Information was derived from a study of the Emma, Star West, Tzarena, and Norwich mines, selected as representative of the district. Vein exposures at these mines were mapped, studied, and sampled on the outcrops and throughout the oxidized zone. Specimens were cut and polished for minera-graphic examination, identification, and textural studies. Knowledge of the manganese oxide minerals is scanty, previous information having been rendered obsolete by publication of the first correctly identified list of manganese oxide minerals by Fleischer and Richmond in 1943. Positive identification of the manganese oxides is possible only by X-ray analysis. Identifications for this study were made by the author with a Phillip's Diffractometer at the Montana School of Mines and confirmed by Lester Zeihen of The Anaconda Co., using a Norelco X-ray camera. It was necessiary to re-evaluate some X-ray data, as published patterns of several manganese oxides proved to be of mixtures, mostly showing pyrolusite as a contaminant. Perhaps the most useful information on oxidation and enrichment of manganese is presented in recent books by Goldschmidt1 and Rankama and Sahama.2 While their hypotheses are not conclusively proved, all laboratory and field evidence has served to substantiate them. This information was very useful in this study. Mineralogy: The primary minerals of the manganese veins are chiefly rhodochrosite and quartz. Rhodonite is abundant in the northern part of the district and in places has been found to comprise over a third of the vein matter. A variable but generally small amount of sulfides may be present, principally pyrite and silver minerals. Sphalerite is progressively more abundant near the zinc zone. Rhodochrosite is believed to form complete iso-morphous series with siderite, ankerite, and calcite. Some variation into these compositions is common, and the intermediate forms are termed manganosid-erite, manganankerite, and rnanganocalcite. Much of the rhodochrosite is remarkably pure. Other manganese minerals in the district include huebner-ite, alabandite, and helvite. Ramsdellite (MnO2, orthorhnmbic) is the principal manganese oxide mineral, comprising perhaps two-thirds of the total oxides. It is dull to iron black, and generally massive or platy in structure. A prominent platy cleavage is the only distinguishing megascopic characteristic. Pyrolusite (MnO2, tetragonal) is next most abundant to ramsdellite, with which it is usually intimately mixed. The luster is often brighter or more metallic than in ramsdellite, and needle-like crystals are diagnostic. Pyrolusite is common in small cavities formed by oxidation of pyrite grains. It is relatively abundant in zones of high limonite content. Cryptomelane (KMnO16 tetragonal ?) is rare in the outcrop, but becomes more abundant with depth. At depths of several hundred feet it is the principal oxide. Although its appearance varies, a blue-black flinty luster and blocky to conchoidal fracture are most common. A potassium flame test will identify this mineral. Hardness of all three oxides varies from 2 to 6. The three are quite commonly intermixed, and their textures can vary greatly. The commonest textures are massive or colloform, representative of colloidal deposition, or vuggy and boxwork textures, formed by partial leaching and oxidation in place. A box-work of either ramsdellite or chalcedony is formed after rhodochrosite rhombs and is indicative of ore shoots in this district. Some replacement of both quartz and the granitic wallrock by ramsdellite has been noted, but most of the oxide was deposited as a fissure filling by fine particles. No trace of manganite, hausmannite, braunite, or manganosite was found. No minerals of the psilome-lane group were detected besides cryptomelane. Amorphous MnO, was found at several spots. A specimen of oxide coated with yellow barite crystals was amorphous and not psilomelane (BaMn9O18. 2H2O). Voids formed by the leaching of sphalerite were coated with cryptomelane, not hetaerolite (ZnMn2O4) as might be expected. The difficulty of finding new ore bodies, the complexities of patenting them when they are found, and the absence of incentive legislation for exploration have limited mining exploration in the United States mostly to the big companies. This situation, coupled with ECA spending abroad, has caused American capital to look outside our national boundaries for investment opportunities which are further made attractive by some relaxing of restrictions to gain American dollars and patronage.

THE detonation of a high-explosive charge having a metal-lined conical cavity (shaped charge) results in a fast-moving jet and a slow-moving slug.1-4 Clark and Bruckner reported the metallographic studies of a cast-iron slug. The present note describes the metallographic studies of a copper slug and discusses the principle of flow involved. The shaped charge consisted of a 5-cm diam cylinder of cast high explosive (60-40 RDX-TNT mixture) having a 45 deg and 0.16-cm thick copper cone. The copper (99.5 pct purity) had a grain size of 0.06 to 0.08 mm diam and a hardness of 65 to 75 Hv. These were fired into a deep container of water and the slugs were recovered undamaged. The longitudinal and transverse sections of the slug were polished, etched, and examined for mi-crostructural changes. Macroexamination revealed a radial grain flow inwards towards the center and a downward component of flow towards the base of the slug. Fig. 1 shows schematically the micro-structural changes observed on the longitudinal section of the slug. The region D near the apex and also along the outer surface of the slug was characterized by the presence of heavily deformed and twinned grains.
