Sec. 1. The membership of the Institute shall comprise six classes, namely: 1. Members; 2. Honorary Members; 3. Senior Members; 4. Associates; 5. Junior Members; 6. Rocky Mountain Members. All shall be equally entitled to the privileges of membership, excepting that no member of any class whom residence shall be outside of the United States of America, except those residing in Mexico and Canada, shall be entitled to vote. SEC. 2. Members: A person to be eligible for election or transfer into the claw of Member must be at least 27 years of age and must have had at least six years' employment in the practice of engineering, mining, geology, metallurgy, or chemistry, during at least three years of which he must have held positions of responsibility in one or more of these fields. This shall not apply to Rocky Mountain members.

1. Introduction.-THE methods of production of sound steel ingots have been described in several papers read recently before this Institute. It was thought by Director Stratton, of the U. S. Bureau of Standards, and ourselves to be of sufficient interest and importance, as a further contribution to this subject, to compare the properties of rails rolled in one mill according to American practice, from several types of ingot of substantially the same chemical composition but cast by several processes; and to compare in considerable detail the properties of an ingot manufactured by the Hadfield special-feeding process and one of the usual type for rolling into rails. We are greatly indebted to F. W. Wood, President of the Maryland Steel Co., who made this investigation possible by kindly placing his rail mill at our disposal; and he and his associates at Sparrows Point did everything possible to make the experiment a success, including the execution of several of the tests and analyses. 2. Classification and Manufacture of Ingots.-Of the ingots used in this investigation, eight were made in Sheffield and furnished by Sir Robert Hadfield, and one was made and furnished by an American steel company,' as a comparison ingot, and was supposed to represent the usual type of ingot from which rails are made.

If we are lucky," says Hollis M. Dole, Assistant Secretary of the Interior, "coal, uranium and hydropower will provide us with maybe a third of the energy we require in 1985. The other two- thirds will have to be made available in liquid and gaseous form." Luck, however, may have run out, for if the facts and figures relating to supply and demand of natural gas over the next 20 years prove accurate, the United States may fall short in its attempts to bring the energy crisis under control. By the year 1990 the world will need to consume a minimum 150 quadrillion Btu of energy with gas requirements running as high as 42-43 trillion cu ft. By 1990, the U.S. alone will require 45-46 trillion cu ft. To meet anticipated demand, this country will have to overcome a deficiency of about 20 trillion cu ft since, by all pragmatic estimates, it will produce only 15-20 trillion cu ft of gas. The importation of natural gas into the U.S. will help but will not solve the problem. Adequate gas supplies will have to be supplied domestically. The Arctic, with its predicted huge reserves of gas, combined with imports of liquid natural gas (LNG) may provide as much as 15% of the 45-46 trillion figure, however, such reserves will not come into play as quickly as originally thought. The Alaskan gas fields, for instance, will provide a substantial supplement to domestic gas needs, but only after 1976.

INTRODUCTION For a number of reasons, the mineral processing industry has been slow to adopt significant automation of its processes. Most ore grinding operations can be operated manually so the pressure for automation to run the process has not been there. Furthermore, many plants had proven over years of operation that manual operation would produce a profit, so why automate? Until recently, the instrumentation necessary for automation of the grinding process was not available. All this has now changed, however. Increasing costs for labor, fuel, power, grinding media, reagants, and capital equipment have not been matched by the market price of the finished product. This cost-price squeeze has made it mandatory to reduce operating costs and improve the efficiency of the process to remain profitable. A number of other factors have added to the direct operating cost to make the problem even worse. These include environmental pressures to conserve natural resources and reduce smelter stack emissions; increased competition--especially from developing countries, varying economic conditions, stockpiling, governmental controls, and to top it all off, lower grade ore bodies. Although many of these other influences are good overall, they take their toll in cost per ton of delivered product. Fortunately, many operators are finding the solution to the cost-price squeeze in instrumentation and process control. Automated processes yield tighter spec. products, require less operating labor, produce more product from a given plant, and reduce unit cost by increasing process efficiency. The plant manager has a "handle" on the plant through process control so that he can change operating modes as economics dictate by changing the set point of some process controllers. He can even respond to economic conditions by switching control strategies from one that maximizes production to one that maximizes recovery, or minimizes unit cost, etc. This has all been made possible by the advent of on-line analytical instruments and practical process control computers. On-stream particle size (1), x-ray, and silica analyzers are now available and in use in many plants. Digital computer hardware and software has become practical so operators can use it without trying to become computer experts. The reesistivity of Cu-Pd alloys of 9.6 to 29 pct Pd alloys was measured after plastic deformzation in tension. For all compositions a continzting decrease in resistivity with increasing plastic strain was observed. By comparison with the results of Damask on a brass ad Cu3Au, it was deduced that these anonzalous decreases in resistivity are due to the decrease in short-vunge order caused by cold work. An anomalous decrease in the resistivity of cold-worked CU-Pd alloys was first reported by Jaumot and Sawatzky.' They observed decreases in the electrical resistivity when disordered Cu-Pd alloys drawing at room temperature. Recently, a similar anomaly was reported by Aarts and Houston-Mac-Mi1lan2 in Ag-Pd alloys containing 10 to 45 pct Pd. The plastic deformation in this case was produced by tensile strain at liquid-nitrogen temperatures. For AE-Pd alloys the relative resistivity change becomes positive for tensile strains of about 20 pct.

In 1915, H. A. Guess, Vice President of American Smelting & Refining Co., in charge of its Mining Department, learned that the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Co., Ltd., a pulpwood and paper-mill enterprise, had found upon its large concession in Newfoundland, and had opened up by shaft to the third level and some drifting, a lenticular orebody indicating about 100,000 tons, as an extremely fine-grained sulfide ore, averaging about 0.05 oz. Au, 4 oz. Ag, 1.5 per cent Cu, 10 per cent Pb, 18 per cent Zn; and that having sent parcels of this ore to Minerals Separation, Ltd., and various other metallurgical testing concerns without obtaining any success in commercial separations thereof, had discontinued work thereon and let the workings fill. Mr. Guess wrote to the general manager of that company and obtained a few hundred pounds of the typical ore, which he sent to his company's metallurgical testing laboratory at Flat River, Mo., outlining various flotation tests desired thereon, in an endeavor to obtain separation into a commercial lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate. But the art of flotation had not then progressed far enough to treat such ore, the galena and zinc blende being so fine grained that grinding to about 300 mesh was required to release the mineral particles in their gangue. Mr. Guess had flotation and other tests continued upon this ore from time to time with whatever new reagents and flotation devices were evolved as time went on, and finally, in 1925, he succeeded in effecting in his company's testing plant, then at Wallace, Idaho, separations into lead concentrates and zinc concentrates of satisfactory commercial grade. Mr. Guess then proceeded to unwater, examine and sample the property and made with the owners a partnership operating agreement upon the mine itself and a considerable area surrounding it, and in the early summer of 1926 began to prospect for additional orebodies, utilizing for such prospecting geophysical methods under the direction of Hans Lundberg, methods which up to that time had been little used in mining in the western hemisphere. This geophysical work found two large flat-lying orebodies of a type precisely similar to the smaller body of the original discovery. The larger orebody, some 3500 ft. west of the original

GENTLEMEN Submitted herewith are the report of the Treasurer for the year 1938 and reports for the same year of the following standing committees: Admissions, Membership, Papers and Publications, Mining and Metal¬lurgy (Magazine), Library, Speakers for Local Sections and Student Societies, and Student Relations. To these reports members are referred for further details. Membership.-The end of the year 1938 saw Institute membership at an all-time peak: 12,474, made up of 2898 Student Associates and 9576 members of other classifications. The next highest level had been reached at the end of 1921 when corresponding figures were: total, 10,329; student members, 1450; all other classifications, 8879. The net gain for the year was 1495, of which 751 were Student Associates and 744 in the other categories. Two factors contribute to the growth of membership: (1) the enrolment of new members; and (2) the retention of members already on the roll as reflected in a relatively small number of resignations and suspensions for nonpayment of dues. For the first, much credit goes properly to the general Membership Committee that functioned for a second year under the chairmanship of Clyde E. Williams. With the cooperation of Institute members in general, to whom Mr. Williams expresses appreciation in his report, the Committee has been successful in acquainting eligible nonmembers with the purposes, activities and advantages of the Institute. The result has been the receipt during the year of 1162 applications, exclusive of Student Associates. This compares with 1212 during 1937 and 1266 during 1936. However, in considering this modest decline, account must be taken of the somewhat less prosperous conditions prevailing in the mineral industries and, consequently, among engineers engaged ?in those industries.

New Jersey, Florida, and Canadian ilmenites were reduced with hydrogen or coke under various experimental conditions and the phase changes occurring in the ilmenite upon reduction have been studied by microscopic examination of polished sections and by X-ray diffraction. The products formed were dependent upon the type of ilmenite, temperature, time and reducing agent. Of the reducing agents, hydrogen was the more effective at lower temperatures. 1 HE possible utilization of ilmenite as a source of both iron and titanium has resulted in the development of a number of methods for the separation of the iron and titanium content. Slagging processes as currently used in Canada are typical of such methods. Somewhat less attention has been given industrially to the reduction of the iron content at less than the slagging temperature. Although references maybe found to such work, in general only one type of ilmenite, either natural or synthetic, has been studied by each author. We have attempted to draw some relationship between the results of experimental reduction and the type of deposit from which the ilmenite was derived, as evidenced by phases occurring in the ores and in the reduction products. Ilmenite ores having from 27 to 61 pct titanium dioxide were included in this study and in each case reduction was carried out at such temperatures that only limited coalescence of the particulate iron product occurred within the ilmenite grains. The history of the individual ilmenite samples and the temperature of reduction were found to determine the occurrence of various phases and the mode of distribution of the iron. REVIEW OF EARLIER WORK ON REDUCTION One of the earliest references to the reduction of ilmenite at less than the slagging temperature was made in 1917.' The metallic iron produced was_____ leached out by the action of dilute sulfuric or hydrochloric acid, to leave a product high in titanium dioxide. Subsequent to this, numerous patents2-'? and other references13"21 have appeared concerning reduction of ilmenite by carbon, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, coal gas, water gas, or the like in the absence of fluxing agents. Mineragraphic examinations were not reported, and in the main, the only examinations made were chemical analyses. However, in two cases3,13, titanium suboxides were reported in the products and in one case2' rutile was reported, in addition to metallic iron. Both were identified by X-ray diffraction. While reductions in the absence of fluxing agents were generally followed by either a wet or dry chemical process for removal of the metallic iron, a Canadian source17 reported removal of the metallic iron by magnetic separation. By the addition of fluxing agents during reduction, the metallic iron has been coalesced into "pearls." Each reference to such a process23-28 has shown that the coalesced iron could be removed by magnetic or gravity means after the product was crushed. In the absence of fluxes, the coalescence did not generally occur. The major part of the present study has been limited to reductions without fluxing agents in order to determine the primary reactions of naturally occurring ilmenites. Titaniferous iron ores have also been studied,29-33 17, l9 their reduction having been used as the basis of a commercial process for beneficiation of such ores in Norway29 and more recently considered in the United States34,35. SINCE it was introduced in 1943 to recover chromite from Oregon beach sands, the Humphreys spiral concentrator has proved successful in several fields of wet mineral beneficiation. By the end of 1957, 9390 Humphreys spirals had been manufactured. Most of these are still in service. The spiral does not offer a panacea for all mineral dressing problems. Its proper application can best be determined by test work. Spirals present a unique advantage for the metallurgist to make tests in a full-size machine rather than a miniature model, without the risk involved in scaling up results. With only 10 to 40 lb of sample, the operator of a closed circuit test unit employing a full-size Humphreys spiral can conduct preliminary tests with full-scale loadings of 0.5 to 2.5 tph. With larger samples, from 300 to 500 lb, he can run longer multi-stage tests to obtain reliable data for the next step-pilot plant design. The manufacturer of the Humphreys spiral concentrator maintains a fully equipped ore dressing laboratory and by insisting on test work prior to sales has largely prevented misapplication of the spiral.

Developments in reverberatory furnace practice at Noranda over the period 1928 to 1953 are described. Features of interest are increasing furnace tonnage from 700 to 2000 tons per furnace day, the use of the suspended basic roof, and improvements in furnace fuel ratio. Points of comparison and contrast between Canadian and American furnace practice are given. OPERATIONS at the Noranda smelter have been described in a series of papers published between 1930 and 1945.1-4 In the present paper the development of reverberatory furnace practice over the 25 year period from the beginning of operations up to the present time will be reviewed and current furnace practice will be described in some detail. Particular attention will be given to those features which are characteristic of Canadian practice: first, the use of the suspended basic roof; second, the deliberate driving of furnaces to give tonnages in the range of 1400 to 2000 tons of solid charge per furnace day; and third, the continuous operation of furnaces at high tonnage for many years without any extended shutdown for repairs or rebuilding. Finally, points of comparison and contrast between reverberatory furnace practice in Canada and the United States will be discussed. The Noranda smelter, which started in December 1927, was built for the reduction of ore from the Horne mine where early development had shown a comparatively small tonnage of rich cop-per-gold ore of a grade and character which would require direct smelting. The smelter was designed for a capacity of 1000 tons of ore a day and originally consisted of eight roasters, two reverberatory furnaces, and two converters, together with necessary auxiliaries. The discovery of a large new body of ore in 1928 made it necessary to increase both the size and the scope of the reduction plant. A mill which was ultimately brought to a capacity of 3000 tons a day was built for concentrating low grade ore and in addition the capacity of the smelting plant had to be greatly expanded, so that for the next fifteen years every effort in the smelter was directed toward achieving maximum tonnage. Because the layout and design of the smelter made it impracticable to add a third furnace, it was necessary to increase the tonnage on the two original furnaces by improvements in furnace design and operation, roasting and converting equipment being added as required to meet the demands of increased furnace capacity. The smelter tonnage, which reached a peak in 1941, was curtailed in 1944 when it became necessary to operate on a one-furnace basis because of a reduction in the output of the Horne mine due to a shortage of labor. Two-furnace operation at a moderate tonnage was resumed in 1949. In the early years the smelter tonnage was made up almost entirely of Noranda ores and concentrates. However, since 1937 an increasing tonnage of ores and concentrates from other mines has been treated in the smelter. In recent years, with decreased production from the Horne mine, copper concentrates from several mines in the district, treated on a custom basis, have formed an important part of the smelter tonnage. THE mining and removal of coal from two or more beds, either simultaneously or consecutively, in vertically adjacent areas have always been matters of concern to mine operators from both operating and recovery points of view. However, with the progressive introduction and use of electrical and mechanical facilities, such problems assume even greater proportions. In this paper typical cases occuring in Cambia County, Pa., are given and procedures whereby such problems may be greatly reduced, if not entirely eliminated, are suggested.

Radiotracers were demonstrated to be of considerable value in a study of the interaction of dithiophosphate with galena. The interaction had characteristics of both chemisorption and chemical reaction, being complex because of the nature of the galena surface. Sorption was rapid and markedly reversible, and flotation occurred at relatively small amounts of dithiophosphate sorbed.
