The high cost of coal in Butte and the development of large amounts of cheap electric power from the Missouri river caused the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in 1908 to make an investigation as to the possibility of adapt- ing this cheap electric power for the operation of their many large hoisting plants. At this time electric power had already been adopted for practically all other power purposes around the mines, such as pumping, compressing air, etc. The map (Fig. 1) shows the location of the mines of the Butte mining district. Outlook for the district......................344 Introduction In an earlier report on the Sumpter quadrangle1 it was briefly stated that the quartz lodes of that region might be separated into several groups or belts on the basis of the kind and abundance of the minerals of which they are composed, and that these belts were disposed as areal zones around the principal intrusive mass of the region. When the opportunity to revisit the region was offered in 1929, as a result of a cooperative agreement between the State Mining Board of Oregon and the United States Geological Survey, it seemed advisable to pay particular attention to this feature of the lodes, in the hope that if the idea of zonal relations was confirmed it might serve as a guide in exploitation.

THIS paper presents, with the help of colored photomicrographs, the new method of mineral identification termed "selective iridescent filming." This method pertains to the field of determinative mineralogy, which it provides with tools for: (1) phase identification, (2) solid solution analysis. The method should be particularly useful in the applied fields of: (1) paragenesis of ore deposits, (2) mineral dressing, (3) mineral synthesis and study of phase equilibria.

If problems are opportunities in disguise, the mining industry certainly had plenty of "opportunities" in 1975. Considering the industry's generally lackluster 1975 profit record, and in view of the slowdown in inflation, there's some hope that 1976 might be a better year in spite of the increasing risks and uncertainties that plague the mining industry.

IsolatEd alloys of copper and silicon were prepared and examined by chemical methods more than one hundred years ago, but it was not until the work of Rudolfi l that the equilibrium relations were studied. The early history of the alloys was well described by Baradue-Muller 2 and need not be further discussed here. The diagram of Rudolfi, based entirely on thermal observations, showed sillcon to be soluble in copper up to 4.5 per cent. at 849" C., at which temperature there was a peritectic horizontal resulting from the formation of a ß phase with about 7.4 per cent. silicon from a and liquid with 7.85 per cent. silicon. This investigation was undertaken for the purpose of determining, in a systematic way, the effect of the rate of cooling of steels, heated to above the transformation range, on their various mechanical properties. This paper gives the results obtained in the investigation of the heat treatment of carbon steels carried out under the auspices of the Committee on The Heat Treatment of Carbon Steels of the Engineering Division, National Research Council. The objects of this committee, of which Dr. Henry M. Howe was chairman, were to increase knowledge of the influence of heat treatment on the mechanical properties of carbon steel. The mcthod pursued was to subject specimens of steel of the carbon contents most used for engineering work, 0.34 per cent., 0.52 per cent., and 0.75 per cent., to various heat treatments, and to test the mechanical properties thus induced. The steels were the same as were used by the committee on fatigue phenomena. This project was financed jointly by the U. S. Bureaus of Mines and Standards; industries and university laboratories have cooperated. A large part of the work was done at Doctor Howe's private laboratory. The committee consisted of F. B. Foley, H. AT. Boylston, H. C. Boynton, G. K. Burgess, H. J. French, J. H. Hall, Zay Jeffries, R. S. Johnston, F. C. Langenberg, H. F. Moore, E. H. Yeirce, H. S. Rawdon, W. E. Ruder and 11. J. Stagg. The first attempt to establish an equilibrium diagram of the lead-antimony series was made by Roland-Gosselinl in 1896. This investigation classified the system as a purely eutectiferous one, with the eutectic at 12.5 per cent. antimony and 228" C. In the next year, Stead2 placed the eutectic temperature at 247' C. The error in temperature made by Roland-Gosselin, however, has been perpetuated in the literature with a remarkable degree of persistency; this value was accepted by Campbell (1902), and Ewen (1910),3 and will be found in the last edition of Desch's3 Metallography (1922). Gonterman's investigation, made in 1907, was the most complete one available at the time .the present investigation was started. He concluded4 that the system was a simple eutectiferous one and placed the eutectic at 13 per cent. antimony and 247° C. Other investigations by Tammann (1907),5 Garbow (1909),6 Rudolfi (1910),7 Loebe (1911),8 and Leroux (1913)9 added little, if anything, to Gonterman's diagram. A number of investigations have been made of physical properties of the alloys. The electrical conductivity of the series was studied by Matthiessen (1860)10 and by A. W. Smith (1921);11 the thermoforce by Rudolfi (1910),12 and Pelabon (1923) ;13 the specific heat by Durrer

EXCEPT for the work of Guillet, who conducted a systematic investigation on the zinc-replacing value of nickel in brass, and extended his investigation with a view to developing commercial high zinc content nickel brasses, the author does not know of any systematic research on the subject. These test results scarcely justify the use of such quantities of so expensive a metal, and could have been obtained from ordinary commercial brass. For purposes of comparison, the physical properties of ordinary brasses, ranging from 70 per cent. to 50.1 per cent. Cu in both the cast and normalized1 conditions are included in Table 1. These incidentally furnish a useful standard of the properties of castings and of rolled, extruded and forged brass when correctly annealed. A close study of some of the well-known special brasses containing nickel reveals a series of alloys which bewilder by their complexity, and one can only hazard a guess at the function and commercial value of each of the many elements used.
