A number of Cu-SiO, and Cu-A1203 alloys of low oxide content, produced by internal oxidation of copper-silicon and copper-aluminum dilute solid solutions, were exposed at temperatures up to 1050°C for fairly long times to bring about partial or total re crystallization. The creep-rupture properties of these re crystallized alloys were compared to those in the as-extruded condition at 450° C. Some of the alloys were cold worked after re crystallization to note changes in creep-rupture properties, also at 450OC. SINCE the introduction of the SAP alloy in 1949,~ many studies have been carried out on similar oxide and intermetallic dispersion hardened alloys to determine properties and to establish the mechanisms involved in the strengthening process which led to stable, high-temperature behavior.'-' To date, it has been indicated that, however achieved, the structure should be composed of a continuous ductile metal matrix in which is dispersed a fine, submicron size, hard, insoluble second phase (or at least, essentially insoluble at temperatures very near the melting point), with a submicron or near submicron interparticle spacing. Stored energy, obtained by a high strain rate deformation process appears desirable, as an additional strengthening means beyond pure dispersion.=

The Moffat tunnel passes through the continental divide about 50 miles west of Denver, Colo., on the Denver & Salt Lake R. R.: It is 16 ft. wide, 24 ft. high, and 32,383 ft. long, a distance of a little more than 6 miles. The advantages accruing from its construction may be briefly summarized as follows: The tunnel eliminates 27 miles of grade averaging more than 3.5 per cent. and actually running well over 4 per cent. in many places, and changes the steepest grade from 4.5 to 2 per cent. It reduced the peak of the railroad from 11,660 to 9249 ft. which enables one engine to pull four times as much freight as it could before the tunnel was built. If the Denver & Salt Lake R. R. completes its line, this road will shorten the distance between Denver and Salt Lake City by 200 miles and will have no steeper grades than the lines now connecting the two cities. The proposal to drive the tunnel through the divide dates back about 25 years and D. H. Moffat, who was the leading spirit in the organization of the Denver & Salt Lake R. R. spent much of his time and energy in efforts to raise money for the tunnel that bears his name. He was unsuccessful and died before the work was started. In 1920 an effort was made to obtain state legislation favoring a bond issue to finance three important railroad tunnels in Colorado but the measure was defeated, largely through the efforts of the citizens of the region near Pueblo. A few years later devastating floods caused the Pueblo voters to seek relief from the state and at this time they withdrew their objection to the tunnel bond issue. As a result, a $6,720,000 bond was issued to finance the Moffat tunnel. Construction bids were so high that the work was finally allotted on a scheme analogous to a cost-plus basis. The contract was awarded to Hitchcock and Tinckler, who are paid a fee of $140,000 for driving the tunnel. All bills are paid by the Moffat Tunnel Commission. The contract was let Sept. 19, 1923, and Hitchcock and Tinckler agreed to complete the work by July 19, 1927. In this paper, a numerical model for determining the stress and displacement fields around a crack of arbitrary geometry in a linear elastic medium is described. Accuracy and computational speed were the main considerations in selecting the numerical method and Propagation criteria used to model the growing crack. Some results regarding the stresses and displacements around a two-dimensional crack of arbitrary geometry are discussed.

Drilling in the Oligocene potash basin of Alsace prior to 1927 had shown important differences of level in the salt beds thus encountered. TO explain this a somewhat unsatisfactory hypothesis of faulting had been advanced. During the latter part of 1926 and the beginning of 1927 our firm was engaged by two organizations1 for the purpose of trying to supplement, by an electrical survey, the geological data this far collected. As a result of this exploration it was possible to affirm that salt dome structures were present in the Oligocene basin of the Upper Rhine, something heretofore absolutely unknown in that region. Two salt domes were actually outlined: one, near Meyenheim, was made the subject of a communication to the Academy of Sciences, by G. Friedel;2 the other, near Hetten-schlag, was briefly discussed by C. and M. Schlumberger3 before the same academy. The purpose of this paper is to indicate the stratigraphic and structural conditions of the area where these salt domes were found; to discuss the results of the electrical survey which led to the location of the domes; and to indicate the new geological outlookwhich such a discovery suggests. Stratigraphy In the southern part of the Rhine graben the Oligocene rests almost directly on the Middle Jurassic and consists, in ascending order, of: 1. Green marls, not salt-bearing, composed of fresh and brackish water deposits. 2. Middle stage, salt-bearing, consisting of lower-schistose marls and upper, variegated marls. 3. Blue marls, not salt-bearing, but including gypsum deposits; hence sediments laid down in a bay more or less connected with the sea.

INTRODUCTION The financial structure of the mining industry has changed strikingly over the last thirty years. The changes that have taken place in the last ten years include both the acceleration of adverse trends in familiar balance sheet numbers and ratios, and the subtle but extensive increase in the complexity and diversity of funding sources, both on and off the balance sheet. The objectives of this paper are: 1. to briefly trace the evolution of trends in the mining industry's financial structure; 2. to focus in more detail on changes in the last decade; and 3. to analyze those trends both within the framework of capital structure theory, and in the context of changes in business and economic conditions. This survey focuses primarily on the mining companies listed on the major U.S. stock exchanges, since financial data for these firms are readily available. The producers of minerals are a diverse lot, however, and the quantitative data on "the mineral industry" as characterized in this survey fails to encompass the financial arrangements for the bulk of production worldwide, whether owned by governments or private-sector enterprises. Even large portions of the U.S. minerals industry - subsidiaries of still larger firms, medium-sized privately-held companies, and the small miners - were not included in the quantitative part of the analysis. THE EVOLUTION OF THE INDUSTRY'S FINANCIAL STRUCTURE In the aftermath of the business failures of the Great Depression, most borrowers and lenders considered minimal debt on the balance sheet the soundest policy. By the 1950's, however, a body of literature was developing which demonstrated that the use of leverage could improve the value of the firm, given a corporate tax structure which allows interest, but not dividends, to be deducted from income. Optimal Capital Structure The objective of undertaking a new project is to improve the wealth of the current owners of the firm. If internally-generated funds are insufficient to allow growth at the desired rate, the company can raise funds either by issuing new equity, or by incurring debt. The most attractive source is the one which will provide the funds for the lowest cost. Both stockholders and lenders expect to receive compensation for use of their funds at a rate which reflects two things: (1) the return they could earn in alternative investments, and (2) the riskiness of the projected return. Factors which increase business risk include the variability of demand, sales prices and input prices, and "operating leverage", or the proportion of fixed to variable costs. In addition, from the investors' point of view, the use of financial leverage concentrates risk onto the shareholders, because lenders enjoy a prior claim in the event of bankruptcy. So although financial leverage can increase a project's expected rate of return, and therefore, presumably, earnings per share, too much debt will be perceived as uncomfortably risky by equity investors, and have a negative effect on stock prices. In theory, then, there should be an optimal level of debt which the firm's managers should seek to obtain in its financial structure. The desirable proportion of debt should in general be lower for a firm with a higher inherent business risk. In addition to their own judgement, financial managers are sensitive to the attitudes of lenders, rating agencies, and investment bankers in setting financial targets (Scott and Johnson). In practice, financial structure will also depend upon the company's growth rate and level of profitability, and conditions in the capital markets at a given time.

The cross-measure borehole system is a common method of controlling gob gas throughout Europe. Drainage holes are drilled into the strata adjacent to the coalbed being mined. Removal of the coal on a longwall panel relaxes and fractures the adjacent strata, enabling these holes to draw out the methane. A test in the Upper Kittanning Coalbed demonstrated the capture of 50% of the total methane generated by the mining operation. A test in the Pittsburgh Coal bed was not as effective.

THE first trial of longhole drilling of raises began in June 1949 at the Holden mine, Chelan Div., Howe Sound Co. The cost of this raise was about the same as the average cost of raising by normal methods which was sufficiently encouraging to give the method further trial. At Holden, the Noranda method of blasthole drilling is used except that percussion drills have replaced diamond drills for making blastholes in all but certain special situations. Two thirds of these holes are between 40 and 70 ft long.

Phosphate clay wastes, as currently produced, leave montmorillonite clay in a highly dispersed and disintegrated form. Alternative processing, where the extent of swelling and self-disintegration of such clays is controlled or limited, may result in improved settling and consolidation behavior. In this study, a method to control montmorillonite dispersion, through preservation of clay tactoids, was examined. Through this process, significant improvements in settling rates and sediment solids concentrations were achieved in both pure clay systems and on simulated phosphate clay wastes.

Both water pollution and proposed solid waste disposal regulations have a definite effect on the copper leaching industry and some of the major factors affecting the industry are discussed in this paper. New developments of the NPDES are discussed with emphasis on the ‘toxic’ or priority pollutants, and EPA’s philosophy on the control of these pollutants. The protection of groundwater is the prime aim of RCRA through solid/hazardous waste management. Some of the major elements of the RCRA regulations that will effect the copper leaching industry are discussed.

A mathematical model of the Western Holdings gold concentrator in South Africa was generated by multiple regression analysis of routine plant operating data. Interpretation of the computer results and application of the model indicated that significant economic improvement in gold recovery could be realized by relatively minor modifications to the circuit. The modifications made are described and the economic benefits resulting from the increased gold production are assessed. Comparison, of the projections of the mathematical model with actual plant performance is illustrated.

MANY investigators, in their discussions, have reasoned that the ductile-brittle transition in iron could be explained by the intrusion of cleavage into the normal slip process. The purpose of this note is to apply the laws of critical normal stress for cleavage and critical shear stress for slip to explain the orientation and temperature dependence of the ductile-brittle transition in body-centered cubic metals. It will be found that within a certain temperature range, single crystals tested in tension will cleave or slip, depending on their orientation. J. M. TIPPETT? Colorado Springs, Co1o.-There are several points which offer ground for discussion, although the authors' indicated results leave small chance for argument. Under classification of the ores as they come to the mill, it will be noted that these are classified according to their lime contents. In previous years the classification was based upon sulfur contents, CaO not being considered; class A would be called the oxidized ore and class B the sulfides. Classification according to CaO is the first public indication that a decided change in the ore has necessitated improved methods of treatment. The very serious effect that CaO, even in small quantities, has upon extraction has been noted for some years.

Frequent reference has been made to the increased domestic gasoline demand recorded for 1931. This increase was in the neighborhood of 7,000,000 bbl. Although smaller relatively than that to which the oil industry had become accustomed by virtue of the experience of preceding years, the increase was of substantial amount, particularly at a time when any increase at all could be regarded with eminent satisfaction. Less has been said, however, of the 18,000,000 bbl. decline in gasoline shipments to territories and foreign countries. When the loss of business outside the United States is combined with the domestic increase, there results a net loss of some 11,000,000 bbl. in total gasoline demand. The gain of 2 per cent in domestic sales gives way to a loss of 2.5 per cent in total domestic and foreign sales. The United States actually has been losing ground in the international gasoline market since 1924, when shipments from this country equaled 72 per cent of the gasoline shipments from the leading gasoline-producing countries of the world. A loss in relative standing was recorded with each succeeding year. As long, however, as gasoline shipments showed an actual increase, the loss in relative standing was of little concern. Foreign producing centers annually supplied an increasing share of the foreign gasoline markets, but, until the past year, the demand abroad continued to increase at a pace which could accommodate all of the increased output of foreign plants and yet require increasing quantities from the United States. It was not until 1931 that the various factors were combined so as to produce an actual and substantial decrease in the foreign demand for United States gasoline. Consumption in foreign countries generally declined, while the output of foreign refineries and the foreign manufacture of substitute fuels continued to increase. From our own viewpoint, this meant a loss of some 18,000,000 bbl. of gasoline business in foreign countries, one-half of it probably due to the lowering in foreign demand and the other half to the increased output of foreign refineries and the increased utilization of substitute fuels.

INTRODUCTION Forecasting of metal and mineral prices is a complex and hazardous undertaking. In order to accurately forecast prices, the complexities of both marketing and production must be modeled for each commodity. Even with the most detailed model, the economy may change unexpectedly, invalidating the forecast. Because of these factors, this chapter will not attempt to present specific methods for price estimation. It will, however, review the fundamentals of price forecasting as applied to planning and design of the final pit shell. Recognizing that no price estimate can be exact, sensitivity analysis will be reviewed as an approach to coping with these unknown variations.

Results of a long-term program of electrical parameter measurement in underground coal mine working sections, performed by The Pennsylvania State University under US Bureau of Mines (USBM) sponsorship, are utilized as the basis for an analysis of the electrical energy requirements during operation. A model section is hypothesized, developed from the average or most representative characteristics as determined from tabulations of the measurements. Performance factors of the model section's machine complement are then analyzed, particularly with regard to the energy required per ton of raw coal cut and delivered from the section. Results are given in kilowatt -hours per ton.

Among these is productivity, a term ranking for widespread misunderstanding with mineral self-sufficiency and mineral conservation. Each interpretation of these words tends to emphasize a single aspect and either minimize or ignore the complex dynamic system of things that influence the Nations mineral productiveness. This paper1, abstracted from a monograph on lead now being prepared for publication by the Bureau of Mines, not only sheds light on the trend of productivity in the lead-zinc mining industry but it presents the basis for forming a common general notion of what the term productivity implies.
