There were no radical changes in the petroleum situation in the Russian Soviet Union during the 1926 to 1927 operating year. The developments of the previous year were continued, but the major undertakings were far from being completed. The pipe lines from Baku to Batum and from Grozny to Touapse, and the large refineries on the Black Sea are delayed in their completion by the insufficient authorizations; until their completion the changes in the general situation will be necessarily of a halfway nature. The marketing situation was subject to much controversy during the past year and, though certain statements are quite true, the bulk of the criticism against the petroleum industry hardly deserves mention. The home market in Russia is steadily growing, with the per capita kerosene consumption already exceeding the prewar figure and fuel oil consumption obviously gaining. The foreign trade is making rapid and well-grounded success, but continues to suffer from low world quotations. There is no apparent sacrifice of home consumers in favor of export trade. The production of all Russian fields increased by 13,750,000 bbl. as compared with the 1925 to 1926 operating year, and next year's program anticipates a further increase of 9,720,000 bbl. (Table 1). The increased and improved refining facilities will make the real gain in production in the next year even larger than these figures indicate.

In this presentation, concepts of the formation and evolution of the universe, the earth, and the cyclic civilizations of man are broadly outlined. The 5 billion or more years of the universe and the 4% billion years of the earth are contrasted to the 5000 years of modern society and the 100 years of objective scientific breakthrough. THE UNIVERSE Let us start back as far as possible, to the beginnings of this universe, some 5 billion or more years ago. This is a time interval that can be crudely underestimated by the moon-earth tidal friction effects that have increased the length of the day by about 1/1000 second per century — from a 5 to 7 hour day to its present 24 — and have moved the moon away at 5 inches per year to its present 240,000 miles. The oldest stony meteorites from interplanetary space give an age dating of some 4.6 billion years, approximating the time of formation of our earth. Further, certain stars pulsate, the period of pulsation being related to their absolute brightness. Measuring apparent brightness and comparing, gives the distance away. Thus Hubble and Shapley of Harvard, from 1925 on, were able to show that the universe reached as far as our telescopes could scan. The Doppler shift of the hydrogen red lines could only mean that the nebulae, or galaxies, were moving away away at velocities increasing with their distances, by 180 km/sec velocity increase for every million light year's distance. In short, the universe is expanding like an exploded bomb. Comparing the velocity increase per million light year's distance again indicates a zero time of some 5 billion years' Thus it appears that this universe had a finite beginning. Physical measurements and present theories permit some picture of our universe's birth. We know since Einstein that many forms of energy are equivalent, e.g., mass, and electromagnetic radiation, aspects of which are heat and light. Now with expansion, radiation density or equivalent mass decreases as a length factor to the 4th power, while mass as matter decreases at a length factor cubed. The temperature in outer space is now perhaps 100° absolute and the radiation mass equivalent is but 1/1000 the rarefied interstellar gas densities. Decompressing the universe to a starting point, however, raises temperature more rapidly than mass density, and results in a high radiation mass energy fraction, which since it is proportional to temperature to the 4th power suggests a zero point temperature of several billion degrees, brighter than any sun. "Let there be light and there was light," according to Genesis 1-3. Now what further initial conditions must there be to explain the relative abundance of the elements in the universe, which by spectral analyses of the earth's crust, stony meteorites, and the sun and stars is surprisingly uniform throughout. Some 55% of all cosmic matter is hydrogen, some 44% is helium and only 1% is made up of all the heavier elements in much the same proportions as on earth. These latter decrease logarithmically in abundance up to atomic weight 100, then level out. This consistent abundance distribution of elements in the universe may be generally explained by taking at Time Zero a hot neutron gas of density about 10-3 grams per cc, at a temperature of several billion degrees Centigrade, with a high radiation energy fraction. Generally neutrons break down into positrons and electrons within about ten minutes, but at the initial high temperature and radiation pressure would recom-bine. However, with rapid expansion and decrease of temperature and pressure, the neutron disintegration would run uncompensated and aggregation would result from neutrons and protons uniting in different degrees of complexity. The total calculated element aggregation time would be about one hour while the temperature still remained above one billion degrees. The element abundances formed would depend on density of the nuclear gas, simplicity of the atom formed, and the neutron capture cross section. Thus a higher density

Florida phosphate operations are unique in the ways standard mining equipment is made to meet specialized problems. Hydraulic mining and transportation has evolved in meeting three such special problems: 1) surface mining of a shallow, poorly consolidated but wet material; 2) high pro¬duction rates, necessary because of low prices for phosphate rock in a highly competitive market; and 3) preparation of the value-bearing rock, or matrix, for washing and flotation. The magnitude of the problems is better appreciated if the reader understands the size of operations in the area. The Florida phosphate field produces and ships about 10 million tons per year of phosphate rock. All of this has to be concentrated to its shipping grade, either by scrubbing and screening or by flotation.

A techno-economic assessment for the recovery of several elements from seawater is presented. Gold recovery has been used as an illustration for the economic evaluation of several processes. Current technology does not present any economically viable alternative to recover gold from seawater because its concentration is several magnitudes too low. However, with the increasingly larger availability of concentrated seawater, mainly from desalination and other processes, coupled with advances in technology, especially genetically modified specific microorganisms, may make the recovery of gold and other desired elements from seawater a reality in the near future.

Studies of roof and floor movement are of interest to those actively engaged in mining. This is especially true in the case of an entirely new area where there is no precedent for guidance. The potash deposit being mined is in the southeast corner of New Mexico, about 20 miles east of Carlsbad. The deposit was formed by the land-locked, shallow, Permian Sea that extended through parts of western Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, southeastern Colorado, and eastern New Mexico. The saline deposits vary from 500 to 4000 ft. thick. Neither of the companies operating in this area has delimited its commercial ore bodies. As all production so far has been from Federal and State leases, the Department of the Interior and the State of New Mexico have a direct interest in the development and extraction of these ore horizons. The ore is composed of an intimate mechanical mixture of sylvite (potassium chloride) and halite (sodium chloride). It lies generally in a horizontal bed varying from 5 to 12 ft, in thickness, and has a cover of approximately 1000 ft., consisting of about 500 ft. of salt beds and 500 ft. of sediments. The immediate mine roof for several feet is principally salt with some potash and clayey material. The next 500 ft. above, from the standpoint of structure, may be considered rock salt with a few inter-bedded potash members. The upper 500 ft. is of sedimentary (Permian and Triassic) origin and contains several water-bearing formations with flows varying from 10 to 500 gal. per minute. This water intensifies the interest in convergence problems as the ore and surrounding formations are water soluble. Potash salt (sylvite) and rock salt (halite) are plastic minerals. Plasticity is defined as a "property of solids by virtue of which they hold their shape permanently under the action of small shearing stresses but are readily deformed, worked, or molded under larger stresse."1

IN a Bolivian tin concentrator an appliance was needed to furnish a suitable product for fine jigging from a pulp of the following composition: Mesh Per Cent. +20 8.0 +40 36.5 +60 9.0 +80 10.5 +100 5.5 +150 4.51 -150 25.0 99.0 Loss 1.0 IN the jigging process, particles of cassiterite as small as 0.1 mm. can be recovered, provided they are not present in excess, that is if the material treated on the jigs contains sufficient coarser sands to keep the interstices between the grains open. Removing the fine material from the pulp by screening, to prepare the jig feed, is impractical, because that means the use of an 80-mesh screen or finer, and is not as effective as hydraulic classification. A screen would eliminate mineral grains from the feed which can be recovered by jigging, and in addition would throw more gangue and low-grade middling on to the jig. Formerly a one-spigot Richards vortex classifier had been used to accomplish this separation, but the tangential openings through which the hydraulic water enters became clogged by fine vegetal matter with which the water was contaminated, and which it was impossible to remove from the water. Consequently the work of the classifier was imperfect and a good deal of slime was sent to the jig. When designing the plant referred to in this paper it was decided to use a hydraulic classifier as shown in Fig. 1. Zinc oxide activities in a typical lead blast furnace slag have been calculated from plant operating data. These activities were used to assess the probable effect of fuel composition, oxygen enrichment, and air preheating on the efficiency and capacity of the slag-fuming operation. THE physical chemistry of zinc fuming has been examined with three objectives in mind: 1—to predict conditions favorable to increasing furnace capacity, 2—to predict the changes required to fume zinc more economically, and 3—to explain reported differences in the efficiencies of various slag-fuming plants. This study, made at ail in the plants and laboratories of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada Ltd., developed from a program undertaken some three years ago on behalf of the AIME Extractive Metallurgy Div. subcommittee on slag fuming. Lead metallurgists first became interested in the recovery of zinc from lead blast furnace slags in 1905 and 1906. An excellent review of the early experimental work has been made by Courtney,' who described blast furnace, reverberatory furnace, and converter methods of fuming zinc from slag. Some of the investigators did not appreciate the importance of reducing the zinc oxide content of the slag to metal in order to fume it, since they tried compressed air blast without fuel in their earliest attempts. However, by 1908, the importance of reducing the zinc was established.' In 1925, the Waelz process for the recovery of zinc oxide from oxidized zinc ores was developed in Germany.' This process was not readily adaptable to lead blast furnace slags because of the difficulty in handling fusible charges in a kiln. What appears to have been the first slag-fuming operation as it is known was commenced by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at East Helena, Mont. in 1927." The first Trail furnace was completed in 1930, and this was followed by the construction of several other slag-fuming plants. During the period in which slag fuming has been extensively employed, little development of the chemistry of this process as a whole has taken place. Several good papers on the petrography of lead blast furnace slags have been published,""= but these studies could do little more than establish the forms in which lead and zinc occur in the initial charge and final products of the slag-fuming operation. In recent years, zinc-smelting problems have been ap- proached from a thermodynamic point of view. Maier has published an excellent thermodynamic treatment of zinc smelting." The important thermodynamic properties of zinc and its compounds have been determined and checked by other investigators.' However, to the best of the authors' knowledge, no thermodynamic treatment of the fuming of zinc from slag has been published. A thermodynamic study of any process requires that the essential chemistry of that process be known. In slag fuming there appear to be some differences of opinion as to whether the active reducing agent is elemental carbon or carbon monoxide. Furthermore, some observers have noted that high volatile coals appear to be more efficient than low volatile coals, indicating that hydrogen is also an important factor in the reducing efficiency of a fuel. That both hydrogen and carbon monoxide are effective reducing agents for the zinc oxide content of lead blast furnace slags can be demonstrated readily by introducing these gases into a slag bath held in a neutral vessel at 2100°F (1150°C). Elemental carbon also will reduce zinc oxide, but it is improbable that much free carbon is available for reduction of zinc, as the reaction between the finely powdered coal and air should be largely completed before the solid coal particles reach the slag. Some large-scale fuming experiments using gaseous hydrocarbons have been carried out by other investigators, but, as far as is known, these have not been developed yet into operating processes. The thermodynamic treatment in this paper is based on the following reactions: 1—to supply the thermal requirements C+V2O2- CO [1] C + 0,-CO, [2] H2+ ~z0,-H,O 131 and 2—to reduce ZnO ZnO + CO + Zn + CO, c41 ZnO + H, e Zn + H,O. THE causes that have formed fissures in the earth's crust, and the agencies that have converted them into metallic beds, are amongst the most important and interesting subjects that can engage the attention of the mining engineer or the scientist. They lie at the very base of the whole system of vein geology, and until something like a correct theory can be arrived at with regard to them, the science as such is necessarily very incomplete. The data for such a theory, owing to a lack of careful and systematic observations in countries pre-eminently metalliferous, like Mexico and the States of Central and South America, are almost entirely wanting. Doubtless there has been abundant speculation on the subject, from the earliest times down to the present, in every country where mining has been one of the leading industries of the inhabitants. Perhaps the theory of Elie de Beaumont more nearly approaches a satisfactory explanation than that of any contemporary authority. The most recent investigations, both in Europe and on this continent, tend to produce the conviction that the phenomena of metallic fissure lodes are in some way connected with, and- dependent upon, plutonic agencies-not, however, as the direct product of volcanic activity, but rather as the result of chemical agencies called into play through its aid. Active volcanoes generally produce only the well-known types of volcanic rocks, though, perhaps, well-marked cases can be shown where these contain ores of copper, etc., evidently derived from the same deepseated source as their hypogene gangue. To prove that there is a connection between metallic lodes and plutonic rocks, it is not necessary that the ores should in all cases occupy fissures within the limits of masses of propylite, rhyolite, or other like rocks, or be

THIS paper is a progress report on a study, of the distribution of the banded ingredients (Figs. 1 and 2) in- Illinois screenings and the method of determining their distribution. Proximate analyses and screen tests1 have been reported and a further report on the washability characteristics of the screenings is in preparation. The microscopic study of the screen-ings is not yet far enough advanced to permit a conclusive report on the effect of mining, screening and washing on the distribution of the banded ingredients in the coals of Illinois. However, considerable fundamental data-have been collected as a background for the screenings investigation and for a proposed study of fuels composed of known quantities of vitrain, clarain and fusain, the three common banded ingredients of Illinois coals. These fundamental data and the preliminary information now available from the microscopic study of screenings are broadly indicative of the reaction of the coals to the physical processes affecting them in mining and preparation. Proximate analyses of samples of vitrain, clarain, and fusain from several Illinois mines have been published 2, but those given in Table 1 serve to show the differences that are apparent in proximate analyses. The vitrain samples are consistently low in ash, and the unit-coal value is uniformly lower than in clarain. The average .fuel ratio (F.C./V.M.) of the vitrain samples in the table is 1.57-whereas the clarain average is 1.42. The fusain analyses vary considerably in ash and moisture. In the two samples from this mine the moisture values range from 8.99 to 22.80 and the ash from 4.86 to 16.91 per cent. Fusain has higher fixed carbon than either vitrain or clarain but the percentage is erratic from sample to sample.

SOON after the Waelz plant for the fire concentration of low-grade zinc ores was put into operation in the early part of 1929 at Katowice, it was found that the conveyor equipment for transporting the hot residue from the furnace dust chambers was inadequate. Hand tram-ming with water cooling was used for a time, but that method was injurious to the workmen as well as costly. The problem was to find some practical mechanical means of conveying flue dust at temperatures of from 450° to 600° C. as it was drawn from the dust chambers. After considerable preliminary investigation it was decided to install pneu-matic equipment for conveying the hot materials to a central mixing plant, where it would be mixed with slime and from which it would be returned to the furnace feed hoppers. The first pneumatic equipment was installed in 1930, and has been in successful operation since that time. The pneumatic method of transportation has shown a considerable saving in operating costs over the former methods of dust handling and a decided improvement in working and hygienic conditions at the plant, through the elimination of the dust hazard. Additional pneumatic equipment was installed in 1933 for conveying the furnace fume from the baghouses to the roaster plant. At the same time pick-up lines were provided for collecting the cleanings from the vertical and horizontal cooling pipes that are between the furnace dust chambers and the baghouses. The latter installation has practically eliminated a dusty and costly hand-tramming operation.

A method is described for measuring two- and three-phase relative permeabilities in sandstones or sand packs using a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique to determine fluid saturations. Two- and three-phase relative permeabilities have been determined on Boise sandstone using the NMR technique of saturation measurement. Three-phase relative permeability to water was found to depend only on the water saturation, whereas three-phase permeability to oil depended on both the water and oil saturations. Relative permeability to gas in three-phase flow was found to depend only on the total liquid saturation. INTRODUCTION Three-phase relative permeabilities are extremely useful in calculating field performance for reservoirs being produced by simultaneous water and gas drives. Three-phase relative permeability data are also needed for analyzing solution gas-drive reservoirs which are partially depleted and are being produced by water drive. Some thermal recovery processes involve three-phase flow which require three-phase relative permeability data for predicting reservoir behavior. Unfortunately, three-phase relative permeability measurements have rarely been made. Also, because of the scarcity of three-phase data, it has not been possible to date to relate other measured rock characteristics to the relative permeabilities with a great certainty. Leverett and Lewis,l Reid2 and Snell3 have reported three-phase relative permeability data on unconsolidated sands. Leverett and Lewis used ring electrodes spaced along the length of the sand sample to measure the resistivity of the sample which was assumed to be monotonically related to brine saturation. Gas saturation was determined from pressure-volume measurements. Oil saturation was obtained by material balance on the cell containing the sand sample. This method is involved and time consuming. Another difficulty arises from the fact that the resistivity of the sand is a function not only of saturation of brine but also of the distribution and saturation history of the brine in the pore spaces. Reid2 used a gamma ray absorption technique for measuring liquid saturation. This method has the disadvantage that total liquid saturation rather than oil or brine saturation is all that can be measured and still another method is required to determine the saturations of individual components. snel13 used a neutron bombardment method which also required a separate determination of the individual component saturations. Caudle et al.4 measured three-phase relative permeability on consolidated sandstones using vacuum distillation for determining fluid saturations. Distillation after each reading makes this technique very lengthy and time consuming. Corey et a1. 5 and Naar and Wygal 6 measured three-phase relative permeability on sandstones by the capillary-pressure method. Semipermeable diaphragm assemblies were used at each end of the core specimen to keep the water phase in the core. Gravimetric methods were used to determine fluid saturations. Sarem7 recently reported an unsteady-state method for measuring three-phase relative permeability on sandstones. This method is an extension of Welge's method8 for measuring two-phase relative permeability. Although Sarem's method is simple and comparatively fast, the assumptions involved may oversimplify the problem. Sarem's assumption, that in all rocks relative permeability to each fluid will depend only on the saturation of that fluid, seems to be rather unrealistic. Neglecting capillary effects at the end of the core is also a weak assumption. Donaldson and dean9 measured three-phase relative permeability using a method similar to Sarem's.

The phase relalionsllips in an isothernzal section of the Ti-Zr-H system at 750°Chave been investigated by measurement of hydrogen equilibrium pressures. The resulting diagram indicates that the hydride phase has an anomalously wide range of homogencity extending from 66.6 to 30 at. pct H in alloys containing about 15 al. pet Zr. Measurement of the heat of solution of hydrogen as a function of alloy composition in ß-phase alloys indicates no anomalous behavior in the region of 15 at. pet Zr, and suggests that the extensive range of homogeneity in the hydride phase at about this composition must he attributed to an enhanced stability of the, hydride phase. THE manner in which titanium and zirconium react with hydrogen and the constitutional diagrams of the two metal-hydrogen systems are qualitatively very similar,'-6 as can be seen from Fig. 1 which shows the constitutional diagrams of the two systems. Quantitatively, however, there are some differences. For example, the exothermic heat of solution of hydrogen in ß titanium is smaller than that in ß zirconium, and consequently the equilibrium hydrogen pressure of a Ti-H alloy is higher than a Zr-H alloy at the same temperature and hydrogen concentration. Other differences manifest themselves in the hydride phases which exist at high hydrogen concentrations. In the Ti-H system, above room temperature, there exists only a single hydride phase in which the metal atoms are arranged on a fee lattice, but in the zirconium system there are two hydrides, and whereas the hydride of lower hydrogen concentration has a fee structure, the higher hydride has a face-centered tetragonal structure. The tetragonal hydride retains its stability up to temperatures in excess of 450oC.7 From the foregoing, it would be expected that the constitutional diagram of the ternary Ti-Zr-H system would have a very simple form, especially as titanium and zirconium are completely miscible in both the a and ß forms.8 The present work, which consists of a study of an isothermal section of the ternary system, was carried out in order to check the assumption frequently made that the electronic structure of the two metals and the mechanism by which hydrogen is held in solution in the metals is the same for each. Although this proved largely to be true, certain inter esting and unexpected features of the ternary system emerged which must be explained before we can really say that the reactions of titanium and zirconium with hydrogen are fully understood. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The most convenient method of studying hydrogen-metal systems is by the measurement of the hydrogen pressure in equilibrium with the hydrogen dissolved in the metal as a function of hydrogen concentration and temperature. In binary systems, the results are easily interpreted in terms of alloy constitution, since two-phase regions can be recognized by the fact that the hydrogen pressure at constant temperature does not vary with the hydrogen concentration in the alloy when it is in the two-phase condition. This criterion does not apply in ternary systems, but there is usually a marked change of slope in the isothermal pressure-composition curves when a phase boundary is crossed, and with care, and a knowledge of the limiting binary systems, the phase structure of the alloys can usually be deduced. SILICIDE coatings on refractory metals are often applied by transporting a silicon halide vapor to a hot metal surface where dissociation or hydrogen reduction occurs. The subsequent chemical reaction to produce the coating requires diffusion of silicon or the refractory metal through the in situ silicide layer. This solid-state diffusion process step is often slower than the vapor-transport step and, therefore, rate controlling. This situation is analogous to the parabolic oxidation of metals in which the oxidation rate is controlled by diffusion through the oxide layer. The purposes of this study were to 1) measure the rate of formation of MoSiz and MoSi2 coatings under conditions such that the silicide diffusion process is rate controlling and lower silicide compounds are not formed and 2) determine by a marker experiment whether silicon or the respective refractory metals are the principal diffusing species in the disilicides.

An electrical model study has been mode to estimate the effect of horizontal fractures in thick reservoirs on pattern conductivity. For the patterns studied, it is shown that fracturing all the wells in the pattern in-creases the conductivity considerably more than frac-turing only single wells. For certain conditions one large fracture is more effective in increasing conductivity than several fractures of half the radius. Particularly in thick reservoirs and with large fractures, the center of the pay is found to be more responsive than other locations. For the seven-spot pattern fracturing the center well is more effective in increasing pattern con-ductivity than fracturing all outer wells with fractures of the same size. INTRODUCTION Although commercial fracturing has been used for some time very little quantitative information is known about the effects of fractures on reservoir behavior. The purpose of this work was to estimate the effect of horizontal fractures in thick reservoirs on the con-ductivity of various flooding and cycling patterns.2 Circular fractures originating at the wellbore and extending symmetrically into the pay were considered. ANALYSIS Electrical models were used in making this study. Horizontal fractures were simulated by copper sheets shaped like the fractures and of a proportional size; the wellbore was simulated by a copper wire. A dilute salt solution served as a conducting medium. A con-ductivity bridge was used to measure the conductivities of the various patterns studied. EFFECT OF HORIZONTAL FRACTURES ON CONDUCTIVITY Fig. 1 shows the effect on square and staggered line drive patterns of horizontal fractures located in the center of the pay. The model is shown schematically in the insert. The upper and lower groups of lines show the effect on conductivity when all wells are fractured, and when only one well is fractured, respectively. In general, pattern conductivities are substantially improved by fracturing all wells. Fig. 2 shows the effect of multiple horizontal frac-tures on the conductivity of a line-drive pattern. At

Copper Basin in Yavapai county, Arizona Territory, about twenty miles southwest of Prescott, is well named. It is a depressed area, and a region of cupriferous impregnation.* The geologic conditions are simple. The foundation rock is a coarse-grained granite and gneiss, in which soda feldspar predominates. There are also dykes of porphyritic rock, and a large quartz vein containing pyrites. Superimposed on this crystalline foundation, we find heavy beds of mechanically formed rocks, conglomerates, breccias, and sandstones, in horizontal layers cropping along the bed of a creek, and apparently the remnants of a much more extended formation, now denuded and largely carried away by gradual atmospheric erosion. The heavy beds of conglomerate are in many places much broken and tilted up, even standing on edge in large blocks, as if they had been lifted by some great convulsion; but the cause is much more simple, being merely the removal by gradual disintegration and erosion of the softened and decayed granitic rock below. The materials of these sedimentary beds are chiefly fragments of granite, gneiss, and plutonic rocks loosely mingled. They are the chief repositories of the copper-ore, which forms the cementing substance. This copper-ore is the blue and the green carbonate, azurite and malachite, and the ore is so generally spread through the mass of the beds that the blue and the green croppings can be seen at a great distance, particularly after or during a shower of rain, when the colors are extremely brilliant and beautiful. The copper carbonate is not only a matrix and a cementing material for the fragments of rock, but it invests and covers these fragments so that only malachite and azurite are visible. The beds are from three to ten feet or more in thickness, and, although seemingly solid carbonate of copper, rarely contain over 12 or 15 per cent. of that metal. The handling of congealing oils and paraffin is a serious problem in the Appalachian fields, particularly because the small amount of oil produced per well makes the removing of paraffin a very costly operation per barrel. Few operators realize or have any means of knowing just how much production is lost on account of paraffin depositing over the face of the sand and plugging the pores of the sand; but where paraffin has been removed the production increases indicate that this loss has been considerable. Many operators believe that paraffining is confined to the tubing and pumping equipment, but it is evident that the most serious damage occurs on the face of the sand and a short distance back in the pores. This paper is an attempt to disseminate information on methods and processes in use in the Eastern fields for combatting losses of production and operating difficulties caused by deposition of paraffin in the pores, on the walls, on the tubing and on other pumping equipment. Mills1 covers this subject so thoroughly that excerpts, abstracts and quotations from his work have been used freely in this paper. Nature oF Paraffin Mills states: "The so-called paraffin that collects in oil wells, and in the pores of the producing sands immediately around the wells, is generally made up of amorphous wax or uncracked paraffin, asphalt, or other gummy hydrocarbons mixed with more or less water, oil and inorganic silt. Some of the samples of this paraffin collected from oil wells in different fields and examined by the Bureau of Mines contains as much as 20 per cent. by weight of water and inorganic silt, whereas other samples are composed entirely of waxy hydrocarbons and oil. The inorganic silt accompanying this 'paraffin' is mostly fine sand, clayey materials, common salt and finely disseminated precipitates of calcium and magnesium carbonates. Sulfates of calcium, barium and strontium are less common constituents of paraffin.

The Getchell area in the northern Osgood Range, Humboldt County, Nevada, was first prospected in the late 1800s for silver, copper, and gold; the first recorded mention of mining activity concerned a silver discovery. The September 17, 1874 edition of the Winnemucca Silver State notes that the Crystal Mining District was newly organized in the Fremont Range (as the Osgood Range was then called) to include discoveries of silver, lead, and antimony made on the Louisa claim. The name Crystal was derived from the plentiful quartz crystals found in-cavities near the prospects. This same area, occurring on the northwestern margin of the Osgood granodiorite stock, was later mined as the Richmond tungsten property, and crystals may still be found there in cavities in a massive garnet tactite. By 1878, how-ever, the name Crystal had been abandoned in favor of Potosi. The next flurry of activity in the Osgood Range was reported in 1899 when a copper strike on Granite Creek in the southern portion of the range received attention. The copper occukences were in a granite contact zone on the southeastern edge of the Osgood stock and, in 1916, the first tungsten in the district was discovered in the same deposit. During the last part of the nineteenth century, cattle and sheep were brought into the Kelly Creek Valley east of the Osgood Mountains by various ranchers. Alphonso and Adrian Bernard were among these ranchers, and in the first decade of the twentieth century, one of them recognized the altered rock where the Getchell Center it is now located. A 3-m (10-ft) deep prospect pit was dug on the outcrop, but the highest assay ran about $11/t ($10 per st). No further work was done on the gold-bearing rock. In 1934, Emmet Chase of Battle Mountain and Ed Knight of Golconda prospected in the area of the Bernard prospect pit and located several lode claims. At this time, Noble H. Getchell, a state senator, was looking for new mining opportunities to develop. He held interests in the Gold Circle Consolidated at Midas, which was becoming a losing venture. Chase and Knight brought their discovery to his attention, and he grubstaked them to prospect further in the area. In need of financial backing, Getchell solicited the help of George Wingfield, Sr., who held a minor interest in the Gold Circle. Wingfield was a successful banker and mine operator during the heyday of Tonopah and Goldfield, and he had become good friends with Henry C. Frick and Bernard Baruch. Wingfield let Baruch in on several very successful mining ventures in Goldfield, and Baruch returned the favor by underwriting the financing of the Getchell mine. Eleanor Roosevelt and Jack Dempsey were early stockholders in the Getchell operation. George Wingfield brought his brother-in-law, Roy A. Hardy, a consulting engineer who had constructed the American Flat mill near Virginia City, to look at the property. Upon inspecting the Chase-Knight claims, Hardy declared the whole area to be mineralized. A crosscut was driven to check the extent of the ore, and the results were better than anticipated. The locators were reportedly given $50,000 for the claims. The Getchell Mine, Inc., was organized on November 5, 1936. A small railroad that ran from Battle Mountain to Austin was purchased, and the ties and rails were moved to Getchell to be used in underground exploration. Enough reserves were found in the Center and South pit areas to construct a 40 t/d (44 stpd) mill. The financial and engineering help for the mill was provided by the Newmont Mining Co. for a 17 1/2% interest in the corporation. Newmont set about trying to solve the metallurgical problems with the sulfide ore, and also directed the early development work. Newmont wanted to grind the sulfide ore underground and oxidize it in the atmosphere by spreading salt on it. Detrital Flat in Arizona was purchased to provide salt for
