At the Kaiser Cement and Gypsum plant near San Jose, Calif., one rod-ball mill has taken over the entire raw grinding function for the largest single cement operation in the West. Installed as part of a major overhaul performed on the plant by Kaiser Engineers, the new mill does the work of seven previous mills in feeding the plant's six kilns and keeping pace with its annual capacity of 8.5 million bbl of cement. Installation of the mill, which is the largest in the world, was started in December of 1966 and completed in April of 1967. The over-all modernization program surrounding the new mill has included the modification of existing crushing facilities; the building of new raw materials handling and blending facilities, new raw milling facilities, and new slurry handling facilities; and the installation of a digital-analog control system.

An "international gold conference" was held at Spokane, Wash., on Sept. 5, 1918, under the auspices of the Northwest Mining Association, which was attended by a large number of engineers, mine operators, and bankers, representing the northwestern states, as well as Alaska and British Columbia. The principal subject under consideration was the doleful condition of the gold-mining industry, gripped between the diminished purchasing value of its product, and the increased cost of its operation. Two resolutions were adopted by the meeting. The first approved the resolution adopted Aug. 12 by the American Gold Conference, a permanent organization formed at Reno, Nev., in which it is stated that relief by the United States to the gold producers of this country should he made to correspond with the increased cost of production, the extent of the relief to be fixed from time to time to Meet changing conditions. The second resolution, adopted after serious and long-continued discussion, was introduced by F. A. Ross, mining engineer, of Spokane, and a member of the Institute, and was as follows: WHEREAS, it is now clearly understood and agreed by the allied nations that national gold reserves must be augmented without delay if rapidly expanding credits are to be secured; and WHEREAS, at this time, the production of gold is daily decreasing to an alarming extent because of well known conditions that, render the mining of gold-bearing ores unprofitable; and WHEREAS there is no way by which the mining of gold-bearing ores may be made profitable except by the direct' aid and influence of the government; and WHEREAS the government has appealed to the mining industry for practical information and practicable suggestions upon this subject; therefore, be it

Ruby crystals of exceptional optical quality have been grown from fluxes composed of Bi2O3 + PbF2 or Bi2O3 + BiF3. Careful control of growth conditions was required to minimize the number of growth defects consisting primarily of dislocations, occluded flux, and growth twins. Slow growth rates coupled with the addition of small amounts of La2O3 as a flux dopant were helpful in producing nearly perfect crystals. Chromium concentrations up to 1 pet were incorporated into these crystals without adversely affecting their perfection. Crystals up to 10 mm in diameter having as few as one to ten dislocations per crystal were typical of those produced under optimum growth conditions. Under these same conditions the occlusions were eliminated, and growth twins were either eliminated or reduced to one to three twin boundaries per crystal. INTEREST in the nature of lattice imperfections produced during the growth of ruby crystals (Al2O3-corundum structure) has been stimulated recently by the need for ruby lasers of good optical uniformity. As a result, ruby crystals grown by the flame-fusion (Verneuil) process have been studied in detail and have been found to contain high densities of dislocations (106 to 107 dislocations per sq cm) and mosaic structures that impair their optical quality.'-3 Attempts to improve the quality of Verneuil-grown crystals by controlling the growth variables have not been entirely successful. On the other hand, rubies grown by the flux process have received little attention even though their more nearly equilibrium growth conditions suggest that they would have fewer growth defects. Nelson and Remeika have shown recently that small flux-grown rubies can indeed be made into very low-loss lasers. However, they did not report information on crystalline imperfections in these crystals.4 Stephens and Alford have reported briefly on defects found in a flux-grown corundum crystal but they neither described these defects in detail nor related them to the method of growth.5 The present investigation was undertaken to establish the relationship between growth conditions and crystalline perfection of flux-grown rubies, sapphires, and other crystals of the corundum family. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The corundum crystals used in this study were grown by slowly cooling solutions of A12O3 in molten-salt solvents of PbO + PbF2, Bi2O3 + PbF2 or Bi2O3 + BiF3. The materials employed were Linde A (a Al2O3 powder) with reagent-grade chemicals as solvents. Some of the solutions also contained small additions (1 pet or less) of one or more of the transition metal elements chromium, manganese, iron, and titanium as crystal dopants. La2O3 was added to some of the solutions to alter the growth habit of the crystals. The La2O3 promoted the occurrence of growth facets parallel to (0112) and {1011} planes, where the indexing system is the morphological system described in detail by Kron-berg6 and used throughout this paper. The melts from which the crystals were grown were prepared by mechanically mixing the various constituents and placing them in platinum crucibles. The covered 50- and 100-ml platinum crucibles were heated in muffle furnaces at 1250°C for short periods of time (1 to 4 hr) and then program-cooled at either 2° or 4°C per hr to 1000°C. The year 1938, with a production of 58,784,250 bbl. from 18,790 wells shows a slight recession from the high peak of oil production reached the previous year, when slightly over 68 million barrels of oil was marketed. The previous high peak had been reached in 1917 with a total of 45,451,000 bbl. Another still earlier peak was reached in 1904, during which year slightly less than 5 million barrels was produced and sold. The production of gas, on the other hand, probably reached a new peak during 1938 with a total of over 60 billion cubic feet. This peak, however, was not the highest peak, for during the year 1908 over 80 billion cubic feet was produced. Between these two high peaks the production dropped down to 16 billion cubic feet in the year 1921. The number of wells drilled during the year totals 1569. This figure is somewhat lower than the figure given in several trade journals because it does not include wells that were deepened or recompleted in a different geological horizon. Nearly three-fourths (or 1107) of the total number of wells were completed as commercial oil wells (915 in western and 192 wells in eastern Kansas). The commercial gas wells completed number 50, of which 4 are in eastern Kansas and 46 in western Kansas. The remaining 412 completions include 130 dry holes in eastern and 282 dry holes in western Kansas. Based on daily potential capacity, the new discoveries of the year accounted for 70,000 bbl. of new oil for eastern and 1,220,000 bbl. of new oil for western Kansas. It is interesting to note in this connection that the number of wells completed in the state rose gradualIy to a first peak in 1904, when 2782 were drilled. The number dropped off rapidly to 368 three years later, but rose to the second and highest peak in 1918 when 4671 wells were completed. In the period between 1904 and 1912 more gas wells than oil wells were completed. Between the high peak of 1918 and the somewhat lower peak in 1937, the low point was reached during 1931, with the completion of only 470 wells. The investigations of large-grained specimens carried out by Polanyi and Schmid,l Sykes,2 Goucher,3 Yamaguchi,4 Gough, Cox, and Sopwith,5 Carpenter and Elam,6 Aston,7 and others have shown qualitatively that grain boundaries restrain the deformation of adjacent crystals. But whether or not the influence of the grain boundary is confined to the glide planes intersected by the boundary has not been demonstrated in any of these investigations, nor has there been carried out any quantitative analysis of the influence of a boundary on the deformation of a crystal. Indeed, the specimens employed in the previous work contained so many complicating factors that it would have been difficult to observe any variation of the extent of the influence of the grain boundaries in relation to their sizc. Installation of a relatively simple, low-cost analog mill control system at Amax Lead Co. of Missouri's Buick concentrator has paid off handsomely. The system, which provides the capability of handling mill circuit upsets and ore changes while maintaining a desired particle size, is expected to generate annually a return on investment of several times its capital cost. In addition, the system stresses simplicity of field instrumentation and control strategy, leading to better operator acceptance and understanding, and its capital cost makes it very attractive for the specific installation when compared to more complex schemes using mass flow measurement and computers for calculating circulating load to infer particle size. This system has the advantage of utilizing an actual measurement for control, rather than a difficult-to-maintain inferred value.

In the preparation of this paper the writer has drawn freely upon the writings of Orton, Munn, Shaw, Mather, Miller, Hoeing, St. Clair, Jillson, and others, as well as upon his own personal knowledge of the fields of both states. It is to be regretted that certain data gathered by him and his assistants last fall are not available for publication. Oil in Tennessee A few wells drilled for brine for salt making in Tennessee between 1820 and 1840 obtained oil, but no definite search was made for oil until just after the close of the Civil War. Active drilling was then begun in Overton and counties southwest of it on the eastern half of the Highland Rim. A number of strikes were made at shallow depths in the basal part of the Mississippian but the wells were soon exhausted and abandoned. Drilling was revived, about 1892, when the Spurrier district in Pickett County was developed and was followed by the Riverton district in the same county in 1896. A pipe line was laid from the Wayne County, Ky., fields and about 60,000 bbl. of oil were run before a very heavy slump in the production, a failure to find an extension of the field, and excessive local taxation caused the removal of the pipe line in 1906. There was then no production in Tennessee until the discovery, in 1915, of oil near Oneida, Scott Co., at about 950 ft. (289 m.) in fissures in the Newman or St. Louis limestone. This field, however, soon failed and was abandoned. In 1916, oil was found at Glen Mary, Scott Co., in the Newman limestone at a depth of 1232 ft. (375 m.) A number of wells have since been drilled there, some of which were dry while others, close by, were produccrs. The largest one yielded, at first, about 340 bbl. per day and produced for several months, when it suddenly went dry. Several of the first wells began at 6 or 8 bbl. per day and are still maintaining that output. Contact metamorphism of coals is any physical or chemical change in the character of a coal directly attributable to heat of surface or intrusive igneous rocks. Coal beds so affected are found in the United States, England, Alaska, Mexico, New Zealand, Greenland, and other countries. Particularly in the United States, there is a wide occurrence of contact altered coals; conspicuous examples are found in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Illinois, and North Carolina. During a recent examination of coal beds on Yampa River, in northwestern Colorado, the author had an opportunity to make some detailed observations on the contact metamorphism of coals. In this field, coals over an area of 20 sq. mi. have been affected by dikes, sheets, and sills;' samples of the coals were systematically collected and analyzed,2 with the view of obtaining more specific data on the character of these alterations. The investigation was threefold in purpose: to secure information on the lateral effects of a dike cutting a coal bed, on the range in vertical effects on coal beds overlying sheets or sills, and on the range in the vertical effects on coal beds underlying sheets and sills. Favorable field conditions, such as fresh outcrops and newly dug prospects, made possible many of the field observations and collections. The coals studied in this field belong chiefly to the Mesaverde and 11Laramie" formations. The Mesaverde coals, on the average, are blocky low-rank bituminous coals; the "Laramie" coals, which are considerably younger, are of subbituminous rank. The coals of both formations, in the northeastern part of the Yampa field, have been greatly affected by basalt intrusives, yielding all variations of carbonized coal from natural coke to the unaffected material. 1. Brinell tests at progressively increasing temperatures are given for a representative lead-base and a representative tin-base babbitt, showing that the former has superior resistance to deformation at the working temperatures of bearings. 2. Small squares of bearing bronze, tinned and then babbitted with a representative lead-base babbitt and a representative tin-base babbitt were subjected to compressive loading. The lead-base babbitt showed less average compression than the tin-base babbitt. Compression did not materially increase the Brinell hardness of the babbitts. 3. A process and a tool are described for giving smoother and more accurate surfaces to bearings than has heretofore been possible. The following experiments have recently been carried out in the chemical laboratory of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co., Pittsburgh, Pa. While the work is incomplete, it is described at the present time because data on the comparative merits of lead-base and tin-base babbitts are of interest in connection with the present shortage of tin. BRinell Habdness of Babbitt at Increasing Temperatures Bearings fail because of wiping, or deformation. Hence tenacity is desirable in a bearing metal, especially tenacity at high temperatures. The Brinell test is commonly regarded as a measure of tenacity. In fact, it has recently been proposed to substitute for Brinell hardness number the expression " tenacity number."l It seemed, therefore, that the Brinell test was especially adapted for the tests described. Disks, 4 in. (101 mm.) in diameter and 1.5 in. (38 mm.) thick, were made of the babbitts to be studied, designated A, B, C. They were poured into metal molds, pyrometer leads being soldered in the center of each disk. The composition of the babbitts was as follows:

Current knowledge of the substantial resources of zinc that exist in northwestern Washington is reviewed. These zinc-lead deposits are all associated with the Kootenay Arc, a narrow arcuate belt of folded and faulted rocks that dominates the regional structure of Stevens and Pend Oreille Counties and adjacent parts of British Columbia. The deposits of the Arc are only part of a major lead-zinc silver metallogenic province that includes the deposits of the Coeur d'Alene district and the famed Sullivan ore body of Kimberly, British Columbia. Most, but by no means all the zinc-lead deposits of the Kootenay Arc are in carbonate rocks. They occur in several stratigraphic units, and in different parts of the Arc are quite diverse in character. The deposits appear to have undergone a complex geologic history and have not necessarily all been formed at the same time or by the same geologic processes.

Dick Hunt is known for having said, "Ore bodies are found but mines are made." This was certainly true of the Ertsberg-it was stumbled upon, literally, by a group of mountain climbers, but to develop it into a mine took 12 years of concerted effort. For more than a century, explorers had attempted to penetrate the jungles of New Guinea and climb the snow-covered Mt. Carstensz, named for a Dutch navigator who first saw it in 1620. But the first to succeed was the Colijn expedition which reached the 5030-m (16,500-ft) pinnacle in December 1936 after starting out from the south coast57 days earlier. Members of that expedition were A. H. Colijn and Jean Jacques Dozy, employees of Shell Oil Co., and Lt. Wissel, a pilot in the Royal Dutch Navy.

Procedures are given for calculating stresses in underground tunnel supports which accounts both for the structural behavior of the support and that of the adjacent rock mass. Stresses in the support are caused by service loads and rock reactions. Service loads are due to rock pressures, hydrostatic and hydraulic pressures, selfweight of the support, or other utilitarian-type loads. Rock reactions, equal and opposite those in the support, are due to the deformational interaction that results as service loads deform the tunnel support against the adjacent rock mass. The procedures developed for solving this problem are an application of matrix structural analysis. The principles involved in this method allow for the consideration of the deformable characteristics of most tunnel support systems and an iterative solution procedure is applied to determine the areas of support-rock interaction. Numerical results of example problems are given.

Generally, the different methods of financing new mining projects are not well understood by the engineers and supervisory personnel. Nor are the effects of these alternatives on depletion, taxes and profitability readily apparent to even the sophisticated management personnel without the aid of cash flow studies. Fortunately, with the advent of the computer it is possible now to simulate many different combinations of 1) equity, 2) loan and 3) production payment financing with little effort. A general computer program for cash flow analysis of mining ventures has been developed and applied as a case example to a 1967 feasibility study of the Underground Mining of Minnesota Taconite. The effects on profitability as measured both in rates-of-return and present value are presented for various financing combinations. In addition, percentage depletion rates were altered so as to measure the impact of this statuatory allowance. Based on the cost data as presented in the aforementioned 1967 feasibility study, and assuming 7% loans, the rates-of-return vary from 9. 9% to [00] % on equity variations and from 9. 9% to 11.4% on total invested funds.

Vapor pressures of eight compositions of Mg-Cd have been determined by the Knudsen effusion technique. Measurements are made at several temperatures for each alloy and the results interpolated to a common temperature for the calculation of the activities. It is not possible to obtain values for the partial molar enthalpies because of the narrow temperature range spanned by the measurements. The results show less precision than those obtained for pure Cd which are also reborted. These alloys are extremely susceptible to corrosion which provides a possible explanation for the lack of precision. Nevertheless, the values of the activity are in good agreement with the results of electromotive force measurements previously reported for the Mg-Cd system. MAGNESIUM and cadmium are mutually soluble in all proportions in the solid state and form a single phase which has the hexagonal close-packed structure. X-ray investigations of this system1,2 have revealed a rapid variation in the relative dimensions of the unit cell occurring at approximately 50 at. pct. The rate of change of the c/a ratio with composition increases markedly for alloys containing more than 50 at. pct Cd. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the activity of Cd in the neighborhood of 50 at. pct and to discover whether or not the thermo-dynamic properties undergo a similar rapid change. The activities are calculated from vapor pressure data obtained by the Knudsen effusion method. Unfortunately the precision of the data from which the thermodynamic values are calculated is insufficient to establish unequivocally a departure from the normal trend. The results are reported primarily because they substantiate the only previously reported activity measurements3 and because they include values for pure Cd which in contrast to those of the alloys show excellent precision. The Cd-Mg system is known to contain several ordered phases. However, this investigation was made at temperatures considerably above the transition temperatures, and the alloys may be regarded as nearly random solid solutions. EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus—The effusion cells are machined from solid tantalum rod. The lids consist of threaded, flanged rings of tantalum onto which are welded shallow cups of 4 mil molybdenum foil. The orifice, which is located at its center, is made by grinding off a small dimple produced with a sharpened punch. Such an orifice has been mounted in plastic, sectioned, and the thickness of the orifice edge measured in a microscope. The maximum thickness is 0.00016 in., and the Clausing factor is consequently equated to unity. The area of the orifice is determined by tracing its projection on the screen of the metallograph at a known magnification and measuring the area of the tracing with a planimeter. GRACE mine and mill, owned by Bethlehem-Cuba Iron Mines Co. and operated by Bethlehem Cornwall Corp., are being developed to produce 9600 tons of 42 ½ pct Fe magnetite ore, to yield 5760 tons per day of agglomerated iron concentrates averaging 65 pct Fe. Located about 14 miles south of Reading, the property is ideally situated in relation to good highways and railroad. Three major steel plants, at Bethlehem, Steelton, and Sparrows Point, Md., are about equidistant from the mine. Discovery of the orebody resulted from an airborne magnetometer survey, completed in 1948, con¬sisting of 7000 lineal miles of flight lines spaced one-fourth of a mile apart and extending from the Delaware River on the east to Gettysburg, Pa., on the west. After examining the magnetic maps, Bethlehem's geologists made limited surface traverses over the Grace mine and Warwick area to check the location, and realtors were engaged to purchase the desired properties over and adjacent to the area showing favorable indication of ore.

DITHIOPHOSPHATE collectors are commonly used in the flotation of sulphide minerals. Studies of the interaction of a typical dithiophosphate collector with galena surfaces have been previously reported from. these laboratories." These fundamental studies were carried out by employing phosphorus labeled radioactive dithiophosphate. Radioactivity determinations then could be used to measure readily and accurately the small concentrations of dithiophosphate that, are present under conditions of flotation processes. Measurements were made on ground mineral, determining the amount sorbed indirectly from the concentrations in solution; and studies were also made with single crystals, determining the amount sorbed directly by counting the crystal surface. The rates, isotherms and reversibility characteristics of dithiophosphate sorption, the competition between phosphate and dithiophosphate for the mineral surface, and the exchange of sorbed dithiophosphate with dissolved dithiophosphate were studied. These studies have now been extended by sorption measurements in flotations with a Fagergren, machine. For this work, the selective flotation of galena and sphalerite from quartz was chosen, using ammonium di-(sec-butyl) dithiophosphate as. the collector, sodium cyanide as depressant for sphalerite, and copper sulphate as an activator for sphalerite. While the selective flotation of galena and sphalerite using a single dithiophosphate collector is not typical of flotation practice (two different collectors are generally used), it was found that a reasonably good separation could be obtained by using zinc sulphate with the sodium cyanide in the galena flotation and by cleaning the sphalerite concentrate or by carrying out the sphalerite. flotation in an alkaline medium. Data of practical importance on the distribution of collector between the concentrates, tailings, and solutions were obtained, particularly with regard to the effect of copper sulphate and sodium cyanide. In addition to the. selective flotation of galena and sphalerite from quartz, single flotations of galena-quartz and sphalerite-quartz mixtures were carried out, along with blank flotations on quartz alone. The present paper describes the results of these experiments. As in previous papers, the term sorption is used to designate uptake of collector by the mineral, without implication as to the nature of the processes involved. Experimental Materials: The mineral system was a ground synthetic mixture of galena, sphalerite, and quartz. The galena was from Galena, Kans., and contained 75 pct lead (theoretical 85.6 pct Pb for PbS); the sphalerite, from Ottowa County, Okla., contained 63 pct zinc (theoretical 67.2 pet Zn for ZnS) ; and the quartz from Klondike, Mo., analyzed as 99.97 pet SiO2. Sulphur labeled radioactive di-(sec-butyl) dithiophosphate was prepared from S82 supplied by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory on allocation from the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. The synthesis consisted of precipitating barium sulphate, reducing the barium sulphate to barium sulphide, acidifying to form hydrogen sulphide, and oxidizing the hydrogen sulphide with iodine to elemental sulphur.

It was observed for several bcc metal crystals that the Knoop hardness anisotropy was dependent essentially on the direction of the lung axis of the indentor alone and not on the plane of indentation. The generality of this observation was tested for an fcc md an hcp metal and an ionic crystal. For cubic crystals, this observation was valid; for the hcp structure, however, the planes of indentation did have an effect on the hardness anisotropy, although this was not nearly as significant as the direction of indentation. Because the direction of indentation is the only significant crystal-lographic parameter necessary to describe the hardness anisotropy, it is possible to represent the anisotropy of single crystals on the standard stereographic triangle. THE commonly observed1, 2 periodic variation of indentation hardness with crystallographic direction on the high-symmetry planes of various single crystals has been inadequately related to the physical or mechanical properties of the crystals examined. In fact, the hardness anisotropy curves for the various planes of a particular metal crystal, as is illustrated in Fig. 1, are uncorrelated and appear in the literature3, 4 as unrelated observations. Attempts to correlate hardness anisotropy curves with specific physical properties can be generally divided into either mechanistic or nonmechanistic approaches. A nonmechanistic approach would be to devise a mathematical expression that could describe the various hardness anisotropy curves. Such a relation could then be compared with the known anisotropy of various physical properties to determine which contribute to the observed hardness anisotropy. No such mathematical expression has been found in the literature.

DURING the last two years, the diamond core drill has come rapidly to the front as a very valuable auxiliary to the equipment of the exploration and production departments of oil companies. The diamond drill and the rotary oil drill work on the same general principles, the essential difference being that the diamond drill employs an annular steel bit set with black diamonds ("carbons"), instead of the fish-tail or other type of bit employed by the rotary drill. On account of the brittleness of the carbon and the danger of breakage if subjected to sudden blows or stresses, it is not practicable to attach a diamond bit and core-barrel to the end of a rotary drill stem. The operating mechanism of the diamond drill must be subject to much more sensitive control than the rotary drill. The bit must be rotated smoothly, without the jerks that are incident to the operation of the clutches and chain drives on the rotary draw works, and the feed must be con-trolled in a much more delicate manner than the mere action of a brake on a hoist. To accomplish this smooth rotation, diamond drills are usually built as a self-con-tained unit with the crank shaft of the engine geared direct to the drive shaft that turns the drill rods or stem. One or two hydraulic cylinders connected with a high-pressure pump control the feed so definitely that the bit can be raised or lowered at will, while the bit is rotating, by the simple operation of valves. The smaller-sized-drills for very shallow work usually have a screw feed control instead of the hydraulic feed. The principal uses of the diamond drill in oil work are three: 1. Reconnaissance or structure drilling; that is, the drilling of a number of shallow holes to ascertain the subsurface contour. 2. Scout drilling, or the drilling of holes of smaller diameter than is required for production, to obtain information as to the character of the oil sand and the quality of the oil. 3. Drilling producing wells.

During 1939 little of consequence happened in East and East Central Texas in the way of oil discoveries. At the end of the year, there were 47 oil and gas fields in the district. Twelve other fields, 11 oil and one gas, have been abandoned. The ranking fields in order of the number of completions for the year were East Texas, Talco, and Rodessa (Texas portion). There were 511 oil wells (distillate wells included), 32 gas wells, and 257 dry holes completed in the district. Exploration, Discoveries and Extensions During the year, 113 exploratory wells were drilled, the same number as in 1938; four oil fields and one gas-distillate field were discovered. Perhaps the most important discovery, which has been named Barron field, was that of M. Samuel et al., No. 1 Barron in Limestone County. The wells in this field are of the gas-distillate type. Other than the Talco and Sulphur Bluff fields, which produce oil from the Paluxy sand (Upper Trinity), this is the first field on the Corsicana-Mexia fault zone to obtain commercial production from deeper Trinity strata. This "pay" is the Petit lime of the Lower Glen Rose of the Trinity group. The four oil discoveries were: Redland, Angelina County; Bazette, Henderson County; Rowe and Baker, Henderson County; and Marion County Shallow in Marion County. It is believed that the Bazette field, Navarro County, represents an extension of the Flag Lake field. Production and Proration The district produced 175,053,729 bbl. of oil (distillate production included) which is a decrease of 4.0 per cent from the 182,369,484 bbl. (distillate production included) produced during 1938. The district's production for the year 1937 was 208,594,453 bbl. The East Texas
