Mark Twain once observed that "Everyone complains about the weather but nobody does anything about it." Not too long ago, the same observation held true for the problem of air pollution. During the past 25 years, however, the mounting concern over air pollution has spurred industrial and governmental research to find ways and means to combat the menacing situation. But for all the time and money spent in recent years to fight it, air pollution is still a major problem in most industrialized communities in America. At the SME Fall Meeting last September, coal's responsibility for such pollution was aired at an informative panel discussion moderated by Ernst Hall. The many-sided problem of air pollution became readily apparent as five experts, representing industry and government, parlayed over the task of cleaning up dirty air. Their opening comments are reprinted here.

One mechanism of metal penetration into mold aggregates by cast steels is vapor state mass transport. In order to further understand and quantify this mechanism, the steady-state diffusion of metallic vapors was studied at 1250" to 1600°C in controlled oxygen pressure atmospheres by measuring the weight loss from a metal bath whose vapors were allowed to diffuse through a porous aggregate compact held at constant temperature. Mass transport rates substantially greater than those predicted from the assumption that the vaporizing species was the elemental metal vapor were observed. Vaporization rates were found to increase with an increase in the oxygen partial pressure in the gas atmosphere with maximum vaporization occurring at oxygen partial pressures just below those in equilibrium with a liquid oxide layer at the given temperature. When the liquid oxide layer was present, no vaporization was observed. Metal carbonyls were ruled out as the vapor species involved because of their thermodynamic properties. The species with the enhanced volatility were deduced to be gaseous metal-oxygen molecules, probably the polynuclear oxides (FeO)2 and (Mn0)2. Diffusion followed the ordinary diffusion mode, and Knudsen diffusion is not important in normal foundry molds. The interdiffusivities of the metallic vapors and the mold atmosphere, through the porous aggregates, were measured. The effective interdif-fusivity of the vapor species and mold atmosphere through the aggregate may be expressed as follows: Deff,12 - — where E is the void fraction of the aggregate and 7 is the "tortuosity factor". Aggregate material had no effect on diffusion rates, and the only relevant parameter was the void fraction. Values for 7 ranged from 3 to 6 for normal foundry aggregates with 4 being considered a good representative value. An area of interest in high-temperature metallurgical processes which has received little attention in the past is the diffusion of metal vapor species in porous aggregates. Research into the metal penetration phenomenon' in foundry molds has shown that a major penetration mechanism is the vapor transport of metallic species into the porous foundry sand molds, followed by condensation of metallic films on the sand grains. Considerable study of the vaporization of metallic species has been reported in the literature, and the vapor transport properties of many metallic species have been determined.2'3 Many instances have been observed where the vaporization behavior could only be explained by the existence of a metallic species with a vapor pressure greater than the elemental metallic species. These species were identified or, in some cases, presumed to be carbonyls,4,5 hydroxides,6-9 or vaporous oxides.10-16 The diffusion of gases through porous aggregates has received considerable attention in the literature pertaining to catalysis, although primarily at low temperature, and more recently in the literature concerned with ore reduction.17-22 The following experiments were devised and carried out in order to determine the nature of the metallic species involved in the metal penetration phenomenon, and the effective diffusivities involved. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Steady-state diffusion was selected for experimental convenience. The experimental systems used, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, consisted of a porous aggregate specimen contained in an impermeable alumina tube held above, and just separate from a metal bath. The entire system was held at constant temperature and pressure in a furnace with a controlled oxygen partial pressure atmosphere. After a brief period of nonsteady state behavior, a steady flux of metal vapor through the porous aggregate will develop due to the concentration gradient of metallic vapor in the gas phase. The flux of metallic vapor from pressure may be neglected because there is no pressure gradient. There is no flux from convection because there is no net flow of gas within the metal-aggregate system, and thermal diffusion is negligible compared to the flux from ordinary diffusion. If the material being studied is allowed to vaporize until steady-state behavior is attained, the experimental results may be analyzed using Fick's First Law.

In analyzing pressure buildup tests for field wells producing both oil and gas, the common practice is to use a modification of single-phase flow theory. Validity of such an approximation has been demonstrated for single-well solution-gas-drive systems. This paper indicates that such approximations are also valid for two-well solution-gas'-drive systems. From this it is inferred that the technique can be used for multiple-well systems. A computer was used to simulate the behavior of a two-well solution-gas-drive reservoir to test the validity of the above type of analysis. Simulation results indicate that pressure buildup tests in such a system can be analyzed within engineering accuracy for formation permeability and pressure. A rule of thumb is given for estimating the length of time a well must be shut in for the pressure in a nearby producing well to increase significantly. To observe such an increase, the shut-in well would have to be left shut in much longer than normal. INTRODUCTION An important technique for obtaining data concerning a producing petroleum reservoir is the pressure buildup test. Such a test, when properly conducted and analyzed, provides information on the average reservoir pressure and the permeability in the major drainage area of a well. The theory upon which the analysis of a pressure buildup test is based assumes that the behavior of the fluid in the reservoir is adequately described by the diffusivity equation.1 Use of the diffusivity equation implies that a single fluid of small and constant compressibility is flowing. To analyze a pressure buildup test in situations which involve more than one fluid phase, the single-fluid analysis is extended. This paper verifies the extension of pressure buildup analyses to two-phase, two-well systems. Miller, Dyes and Hutchinson1 have presented a technique for analyzing pressure buildup tests in circular bounded reservoirs. Their method requires that the reservoir be producing at pseudo-steady state (constant pressure gradients) prior to shut-in. An alternate reservoir model, presented by Horner,2 assumes that the reservoir is infinite. The Homer model does not assume a Pseudo-steady state prior to shut-in, but the assumption that the reservoir is infinite implies that the average pressure can be determined only if the total production prior to shut-in is small compared to the total fluid originally present. Limitations imposed by the pseudo-steady state and infinite reservoir assumptions are avoided by the technique proposed by Matthews, Brons and Hazebroek.3 Their method can be used to calculate both the Permeability and the average pressure in bounded single-well systems which are not necessarily at steady state. They also suggested determining the average pressure of a multi-well reservoir producing from pseudo-steady state by volumetrically averaging the static pressures of the individual wells. Matthews and Lefkovits4 used numerical simulation techniques to verify that this method does produce adequate results for single-phase, multiple-well systems. Perrine5 proposed modifications to the single-phase theory so that pressure buildup tests in multiple-phase systems could be analyzed. He suggested replacing the single-phase mobility (k/µ) by the sum of the mobilities of the individual phases, and replacing the fluid compressibility by an average compressibility weighted by the saturations of the separate phases. By using numerical techniques to solve the two-phase flow problem for a single-well system, he concluded that this approximation gives results within engineering accuracy. More recently, Weller6 has shown that, for a gas-oil system with a single well at the center of a circular reservoir, pressure buildup tests can be analyzed adequately by using the modification proposed by Perrine. Feller's results also indicate that, as the gas saturation increases, this analysis becomes less accurate. To date, no evidence is available to show that the Perrine approximations can be combined with the Matthews-Brons-Hazebroek technique to calculate the average pressure of a multi-well,

In order to take into account the influence of the different permeabilities, "parallel flow" is defined, and this concept is used to compute the recovery efficiency of recycling such a sand complex. In the first approximation the position of the wells with respect to one another is not considered. In order to compute the effect on the recovery efficiency of the position of the wells, the area of a field is considered to be made up of rectangles; each rectangle containing one input well in the center and two producers located symmetrically with respect to the input well. Formulas are given from which to obtain the pressure and streamlines in a steady-state flow. A method is devised to compute rapidly the successive positions of the dry gas front. If the field is irregular in shape, pressure and streamlines can be obtained by a potentio-metric electrical model study. By using the concept of "parallel flow" and the results obtained by mathematical analysis or by electrical model study for a homogeneous formation, the effects of different permeabilities and of the location of the wells can be established. From these studies it is apparent that the efficiency of recycling can be profoundly influenced by differences in permeability among the various parallel strata. Introduction With the discovery of an increasing number of gas-distillate fields in the Gulf Coast, engineers have had occasion to give more thought to the performance of these reservoirs, as evidenced by the literature published in recent years. In the majority of studies published so far the formations are considered to consist of uniform, homogeneous sand. In this paper the authors wish to bring out the effect of variations in the permeability of the formations on the over-all recovery efficiency of wet gas in cycling operations. The importance of the permeability profile is clearly indicated by the fact that in gas cycling, highly permeable stringers in an otherwise tight sand can allow complete displacement of wet by dry gas in these stringers long before the wet gas in the tight portions of the sand is displaced. This by-passing will be reflected by a reduction in the condensate content of the production sooner than can be anticipated from a mathematical analysis or an electrical model study on uniform sands. Electrical model studies or mathematical analyses cannot take into consideration the manifold variations of permeability within the reservoir. Experimental as well as analytical difficulties make it necessary to consider the prototype for either of these studies as a perfectly uniform sand. Mathematical analyses are applicable only when a reservoir can be divided into units of simple geometrical form, of uniform thickness throughout. Electric model studies are capable of giving information on reservoirs of any shape or thickness, but it is essential that the sand be considered homogeneous, so that three-dimensional flow can take place. Of the seventeen western states, five-Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Montana, and Nevada-produce about 90 pct of this country's primary copper. All seventeen of these states occupy 60 pct of the nation's land area but receive only 25 pct of the country's total precipitation. Seventy percent of this precipitation returns directly to the atmosphere through evaporation and transpiration, leaving very little for ground reservoir recharge or immediate domestic, agricultural, or industrial use. With so limited a supply available for all, competition for water rights among users is severe. The result does not always permit using the limited supply to produce the most valuable end product. Most of industry and much of agriculture can shop around for suitable operating locations. Where water is critical to their purposes, they can and do locate in areas where the needed amounts are available. Such is not the ordinary lot of the mining industry, which must locate in the area of the deposit it is planning to mine and concentrate. In the case of copper this happens to be, for the most part, right in the heart of the semi-arid regions of the West.

Since many of the easily mined, continuous, thick coal seams in the Appalachian Region have been exhausted, new exploration and mining is being directed toward less continuous seams that are under more cover and are more difficult to mine. The direct results of this are that more money and time and more expertise and data are needed to plan and open new coal mines today. It is also becoming apparent that the old methods of assimilating and preparing information needed for mine planning are inadequate to meet the needs of today's modern mining engineer, especially in the areas of data gathering, storage, retrieval, preparation, and interpretation. The system described here allows assimilation of old and new core data in a relatively quick, accurate, and efficient manner. The system is a set of computer assisted procedures consisting of the following four basic steps: 1) raw data collection, computer input, storage, and graphic preparation, 2) geologic profile correlation and establishment of seam continuity, 3) computerized data posting of important seam parameters, 4) geologic and planimetric analysis for mine planning.

The electrolytic refining of metals for the removal of undesirable impurities has become a recognized necessity in the nonferrous field. Copper, lead, zinc, nickel, silver and gold have been produced in this manner for years. The United States Metals Refining Co., realizing that considerable quantities of lead and tin could be made available to the trade if a satisfactory method of purification of these metals could be established, decided to investigate the possibilities of electrolytic solder. In cooperation with Dr. Edward F. Kern, of the School of Mines at Columbia University, the company developed a process of electrolytic refining of lead-tin alloys using a tin-lead fluosilicate electrolyte. A pilot plant was installed in November 1927, and the commercial unit was put in October 1929. Since that time thousands of tons of electrolytic solder have been produced in this plant and consumed by all branches of industry that use solder. Older Methods of Producing Solder In the early days practically all solder was made by melting together virgin lead and tin in the proper proportions to meet specifications; then the solder was cast into the commercial shapes required. Today the base of most solders comes from scrap or secondary materials. Ordinarily solder is produced from secondary materials either by sweating solder-bearing scrap or by smelting lead and tin-bearing drosses, residues and similar materials. When solder is produced from scrap by sweating, clear solder is collected directly. It is then given some kind of kettle refining and usually blended to specification with virgin metals before it is cast into finished shapes. In producing solder from drosses and residues, the materials are usually first given a reducing smelting treatment from which a crude solder is obtained. This crude solder may be refined in several ways, but usually the first step is a furnace liquation to remove the bulk of the copper, which is followed by one of the more or less complicated methods for the removal of antimony and other impurities.

The measures overlying some coal beds are under stress as the result of geological movements after the measures have been deposited. The removal of the coal in the process of mining induces additional stress in the roof measures. Certain types of deposits have sufficient inherent strength to be self-supporting over definite width of excavations and the stress is adjusted without appreciable movement of the material, to the extent that no part of the material will become detached and fall. The uplifting of the measures in geological time often results in the establishing of cleat planes or planes of weakness in the measures overlying the coal, and these planes generally have a uniform direction. Measures that have not been subject to uplifts are less liable to have noncompensable stresses, although any method of underground mining results in the creation of stress in the roof measures over the excavations and over the coal pillars. The immediate roof measures extending upwards of 10 to 15 ft. above the coal give the greatest concern in maintaining the roof in the advance work in the solid coal. Immediate measures which are inherently weak often may be scaled and supported for indefinite periods by a system of timbering. As an excavation is made, the pillars adjoining must take on the weight previously supported by the coal removed. The roof over the excavations takes on the function of a beam and if too weak to be self-supporting it will fail either through shearing or bending, and the roof cavity may enlarge until a self-supporting arch is formed. As support is removed by taking the coal away, there is a tendency for the roof members to move toward the excavation in an effort to compensate the stress; particularly is this true where there is an overlying bed of clay, which may act as a lubricant on which adjoining members may slide. Unstabilized stresses, plus the force of gravity, plus the inherent strength of the material, govern the tendency of mine roof to fall when not supported by timber. In general, most mine roof depresses when the coal is removed. This depression may be in the nature of a sag as the result of bending, or the edges of the pillar may break away or the floor may come up or heave.

FRom a study of sulfur with reference to its specific combination in coal, published as University of Illinois Bulletin No. 111, 1919, it is now possible to determine the various forms of this constituent with a good degree of accuracy. This fact suggests two questions: (1) Are the same analytic methods applicable to coke? (2) Is there any correlation between the forms of sulfur as it occurs in coal and the residual sulfur found in the finished coke? The answer to the second question might be helpful in answering a still further question as to what chemical route the sulfur travels during the carbonization process. While the special studies along these several lines are by no means complete, a few preliminary statements are herewith presented. They may, at least, prove suggestive of further possibilities from a continuation of research along these lines. There is no reason, chemically, why the analytic methods devised for coal should not apply to coke and a fair amount of experience in connection with such use affords confirmation of this statement. The procedure in the case of coal may be briefly outlined as follows: Combinations of sulfur as sulfate, or sulfides other than FeS2, are readily dissolved without disturbing either the pyrite sulfur or the sulfur that is in organic combination by means of dilute hydrochloric acid— 1 part of concentrated HC1 to 10 parts of water or approximately 3 per cent. acid. Digestion at 60" C. for 24 hr. insures the complete removal of the sulfur thus combined. In freshly mined coal the amount of such sulfur is very small; weathering processes, however, may very materially increase the amount of sulfate present. Sulfur in the form of iron pyrites, or marcasite, may be quantitatively removed without oxidation of the organic sulfur as follows: A dilute solution of nitric: acid is prepared having 1 part of concentrated HNO3 to 3 parts of water or with an approximate specific gravity of 1.12. The coal sample, ground to 100 mesh, is digested with this solution at room temperature for 3 or 4 days, filtered and evaporated to dryness, taken up with water, and acidified with hydrochloric acid. It is now ready for precipitation with barium chloride in the usual manner. If sulfate is present in the original sample to an appreciable amount, it should be removed by the procedure outlined above. It is not necessary here to give the methods for determining the two

NATURE has provided us with many metals, but with few really good ones, and frequently the better metals are the rarer. It is to this circumstance that many physical metallurgists, inventors, and just plain experimenters owe their employment, for much of their work is directed, consciously or otherwise, toward the alleviation of some of the more serious shortcomings of the cheaper, less noble, and weaker metals; by alloying, age-hardening, passivating, cladding, plating, and other useful dodges, which sometimes permit the substitution of one of the less gifted metals for one of the really good ones. As a matter of fact, the varied needs of our complex civilization could be quite well met with only five metals, if they were sufficiently abundant, and one of the five would certainly be platinum, the most noble and versatile that nature provides. Many metals are difficult to handle and seem to take pleasure in defying their investigators to find good uses for them, and finally when a use is found it is frequently quite a specific one; in other words, a hole has to be found--or perhaps made-to fit the peg. It is for this reason that a large amount of research must be con- ducted before the more recalcitrant metals become really useful. In platinum, however, we have a metal that inherently possesses so many valuable attributes that it became useful as soon as methods for producing it in massive ductile form were devised, and once its complicated chemical behavior was understood it became principally an aid to research rather than the subject thereof. THE Anaconda company has never indulged in any employee activities at Butte which might be termed paternalistic, but it has exerted a vast amount of effort in care of its employees during working hours. The reason for this policy is not lack of interest or that the company does not feel the effect of employees' activities while they are "off the job"; it is that the company and the city of Butte have grown up together and, each has been adequate in its own sphere, the company in providing employment at the highest possible wage and the city in providing housing, sanitation, commercial services, medical services, schools, churches, amusements and entertainments. The one exception to this independence between the company and the community is the Butte Water Co., which is a wholly owned sub-sidiary of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. Mention of this relationship is made here because the water supply of such a city as Butte is one of the principal factors in determining the health of the people. Very early in the development of the Anaconda company an adequate and dependable water supply for the operations became necessary, therefore the company took over this important community function. So well has this activity worked out that during the whole period of time covered, in which the company has expanded to become practically the sole mine operator and the community has grown from a small mining camp to the status of a modern city, there has been no shortage of water or any outbreak of water-borne, epidemic disease.

The exploration of deposits of the metals will never become an exact science. There will always be an element of uncertainty in prospecting and developing mines. In countries where the surface has been closely scrutinized, most of the deposits whose outcrops contain valuable metals have probably been discovered. Many metalliferous deposits, however, are normally so much altered at the surface that the true significance of their outcrops is likely to be obscured. If a deposit is not exposed, its presence may become known by some one of its characteristics that is different in kind or in degree from a similar feature of the associated rock. Thus, a deposit that is not exposed may be discovered because of its magnetic property. So few minerals are strongly magnetic that the value of magnetic surveys is limited, but the dip needle has nevertheless proved of great aid in locating magnetic belts, and these in some regions are associated with workable iron ores. The Cuyuna Iron Range of Minnesota, which does not exhibit any outcrop of iron ore, was discovered by drilling "areas of attraction" that are due to belts of magnetic rocks associated with the iron ores. In some regions the use of the dip needle is justified, even if it does no more than reveal the strike of the rocks, since a knowledge of the latter enables the driller to locate and point his holes to advantage. The measures of gravity by the use of the pendulum are so accurate, or the limit of error is so small, that one might detect the presence of a concealed tabular deposit approximately at the surface, 34 ft. (10.36 m.) thick, having a density double that of the surrounding rocks. However, not many deposits have a density twice that of ordinary rocks and a thickness as great as 34 ft.; if they lie a short distance below the surface the density or the thickness must be even greater. Consequently, there is not much hope of sufficiently developing the gravity method of detecting deposits of heavy ores to make it of practical value. If the limit of error could be reduced to about one-tenth the present factor, and if the rather tedious and painstaking methods of determining gravity that are now in use could be simplified, the method would promise some degree

The thermal processes for the production of metallic magnesium can be divided into two general classifications, the direct reduction of magnesia with carbon and the indirect reduction of compounds of magnesium by reducing agents that are themselves products of carbon reduction. The latter are so chosen as to cause reduction of magnesium compounds wherein only the magnesium is liberated in the vapor phase. Reducing agents used are: calcium carbide, silicon carbide, silicon, aluminum, various silicides or combinations of calcium, aluminum, silicon in iron. All of these are products of highly endothermic reactions and, with the exception of scrap aluminum, can be produced in an open, submerged arc furnace; that is, the arc is covered only by the charge itself. The more investment in energy required to prepare such a reducing agent, the less is the energy required in the subsequent step to reduce the magnesium compound to the metal. It is impossible, however, to avoid the laws of thermodynamics, no matter how much circumambulation is resorted to in the preparation of successively more powerful reducing agents. Since each such step carries forward its own inefficiencies, it appears evident that the ultimate status of such processes is dependent upon the development of by-products. The direct reduction of magnesium oxide by carbon has a decided appeal to both the scientist and the industrialist. The successful production of the carbo-thermic plant at Permanente is a significant fact in the substantiation of this concept. Like most developments, however, the history of carbon reduction of magnesia is not one of triumph after triumph, or immediate heady success to the investigators. It is understood that one of the early investigators conducted an experiment wherein he placed carbon and magnesia in one end of an evacuated tube and managed to heat this end to a temperature high enough that magnesia and carbon deposited at the other end of the tube. The charge, unreduced, appeared to have been completely transported from the hot to the cold end of the tube. This raised doubt for some time as to whether magnesia could be reduced at all with carbon. It was correctly suspected, however, that the magnesia was in fact reduced and the resultant magnesium vapor and carbon monoxide reacted upon one another upon reduction in temperature to reform the starting ingredients. Attempts were then made to dilute the two vapors by passing a considerable stream of hydrogen through an arc furnace charged with magnesia and carbon. Thus by dilution of the products it was' expected to obtain metallic magnesium. The results were positive and metallic magnesium was .0

Nickel metal, in powder form, has been produced by pressure reduction, with hydrogen gas, of slurries of nickel hydroxide at temperatures up to 250°C. The nickel hydroxide was obtained by precipitation from nickel chloride and nickel sulphate solutions, using both magnesium oxide and calcium oxide. Rates of reduction and yields were determined as a function of temperature, hydrogen overpressure, seed addition, and the amount of alkali used. The mechanism of reduction of slurries obtained from the sulphate system was studied, and major differences between the sulphate system and the previously examined chloride system investigated. Specifically, in the sulphate system, contra the chloride system, no seeding was necessary, plating and densification were virtually absent and only short induction periods occurred. Grades of product are given and the use of this process in the recovery of nickel from laterites is discussed. The selective reduction of nickel from mixed hydroxide slurries and effluent treatment plant sludge has also been examined.

This paper deals in a general way with certain of the necessary requirements of refractories for the open-hearth furnace. The refractories in common use for the different parts are discussed both as to the service they are giving and their suitability to withstand existing chemical, thermal and physical requirements. The relation between the service and allowable cost of a refractory is discussed and suggestions are requested on these points. The purpose of this paper is not to report, to the Institute, the results so far obtained in the survey, by the Bureau of Mines, of the metallurgical requirements for open-hearth refractories, but to present an outline that we hope will serve as a basis for discussion. The systematic survey that the Bureau proposes to make has not been outlined, although considerable preliminary work has been done in the way of interviewing open-hearth superintendents in several of the larger steel plants from the Chicago district eastward. At the several conferences so many of the opinions were diametrically opposite, when considering the same point, that it was thought that such an opportunity as the Institute offers in the way of a clearing house for moot metallurgical topics should not be overlooked. For this reason, the paper has been prepared as a basis for a discussion which, it is believed, will be of value in outlining the program of the Bureau. D. A. LYON, Assistant Director. THE importance of securing suitable refractories for metallurgical operations is daily becoming more universally recognized; particularly in the manufacture of open-hearth steel, where the life and earning power of the furnace depends largely on the judgment and care exercised in the selection of the correct quality of refractory for each of the parts. Any innovation that would make available to the steel manufacturers refractories with longer life or better suited to their needs than those now employed, and at a cost that would permit of their use, would be of enormous value to the industry at large. The Cuyuna manganiferous iron ores can be a principal source of manganese for the iron and steel industry in the United States, provided metallurgical methods as a whole are adjusted so as to use run-of-mine ore. The use of manganese in steelmaking is growing. Increasing amounts of impurities in raw materials call for more manganese, a constant cheap supply of which is wanted. There are few deposits of ore in the United States carrying over 35 per cent. manganese that can be mined and marketed at a profit in normal times. We are largely dependent on foreign ores. The small domestic deposits should rightly be held in reserve for an emergency, such as a war, when importation might cease. Even the production from lean ores, concentrated it may be, might not carry us through a protracted stringency. The Cuyuna district is, therefore, during normal times capable of supplying a large total of manganese. The ores are iron ores containing 5 to 25 per cent. of manganese with the inverse range of 52 to 28 per cent, of iron. The manganese costs no more per unit in the ore than the iron, because cost of mining, largely by open-pit methods, is not affected by the manganese content. The manganese units should, perhaps, command a higher price, but as their value is contingent on metallurgical practice, a higher price may be justified only when a shortage in manganese occurs. Manganiferous iron ores can never entirely supplant straight manganese ores though methods are employed that will permit them to do so partly. For the manufacture of ferromanganese, ores carrying above 42 per cent. manganese are needed. Ores with manganese running between 20 and 42 per cent. are used for making spiegeleisen. But established practice in certain plants, based on the admixture of manganiferous iron ores to straight iron ores has greatly lessened the consumption of high-priced, scarce, manganese alloys with good results. An extensive reconnaissance survey of bentonitic clays in Egypt was carried out from 1982 to 1984. X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, electron microscopy, and physical property evaluations were used to identify the mineralogy and assess their industrial potential. Samples were collected from a number of localities, namely Qasr El-Sagha (Fayum), Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road (Western Desert), and Qattamia area (Eastern Desert). This paper reviews the geological occurrence, the mineralogical and chemical characteristics, and the potential utilization of these deposits.

This paper mentions briefly the history of hydraulic jetting as applied to perforating and fracture initiation. It points out the advantages of hydraulic perforation and undercutting as an aid for creating a fracture at the point desired rather than depending upon the weakest point in the formation for breakdown. It describes early experimental work with jet nozzles in search of better nozzle materials. The effect of splash-back damage and its subsequent influence on jet body and tool design during this work is discussed. A series of cutting-rate curves for jets cutting steel and steel-cement-formation combinations is presented to show the effect of hydrostatic head and the point of diminishing returns with respect to cutting time. There is a series of photographs showing various types of rock formation in which perforation and undercutting tests were made. These stones were drilled and the casing cemented in place as in an actual well. The casing was perforated and circularly cut as if preparing for a fracturing job. The conclusion reached in the paper is that hydraulic jetting with sand-laden fluid can be used for perforating and undercutting casing, cement and formation rock for the intended purpose of inducing the formation to fracture at a desired point. INTRODUCTION Hydraulic jetting as a means of cleaning a formation during acidizing has been used for many years. The acid-jet gun was used to clean formation and for drilling cement from casing with acid. This tool was dropped to a seating ring installed on the tubing and could be retrieved by reverse circulation or wire line. In this process, the fluids were directed against the formation to clean and penetrate beyond the mud-damaged area. After the development of the hydraulic fracturing process, interest in jetting the formation with abrasive-laden fluid was renewed. The cutting action of abrasive fluid on pumping equipment, which is a well known problem, has been utilized to perforate and undercut casing, tubing and formation. In this process, surface areas are provided in the formation on which the frac- turing pressures may work to produce a fracture at the location desired. EQUIPMENT The tools used consist of bodies containing two, three or four jets in a single horizontal plane equally spaced around the circumference. The body is threaded to the end of a string of tubing and run into the well. In addition, an expendable tool is available that may be left in the hole after perforating and produced through until necessary to remove the tubing. The bottom of each tool is equipped with a ball-type back-pressure valve. The ball can be reversed to the surface and recovered. This allows reverse circulation so that loose sand which accumulated below the tool while jetting may be removed before the fracturing job. The present jetting tools are of such length that, when screwed together, the jets fall on 12-in. spacing. ANALYSIS OF THE PROBLEM Early work with nozzles indicated that hardened steel was not a suitable material for jets and that more durable material would be required. Ceramics were tried and found to be superior to steel but still too shortlived for most applications. Tungsten carbide, which was tried and found to be the best material available, is now being used for jet nozzles. Analysis of the problems presented by this process indicated that the following information was needed. 1. The effect of submergence on a jet stream and the effect of submergence on the cutting rate of a jet stream. 2. The cutting rate and depth of a jet stream in steel. 3. The cutting rate in various formations and point of diminishing returns. 4. Size of hole or slot cut in a pipe by a given jet. 5. Fluids and sands used. 6. The flow of various weight fluids through the jet nozzle and the discharge coefficients. 7. The type cut formed in the formation by the jet stream. 8. DETAILED knowledge of purchase specifications established by coal consumers is essential to the successful design and operation of a coal preparation plant. ANTHRACITE Specifications should be considered by both the consumer and the producer as guide posts outlining a certain path for both to follow. Plants differ, therefore specifications must differ to meet the varied requirements. Specifications are not of themselves a "cureall" or an assurance of complete satisfaction in fuel utilization. Specifications should not be regarded as a license to engage in an orgy of buying any and all coals that may happen to fall within their limits. This would lead to the indiscriminate mixing of coals which may vary in their burning characteristics. Different coals of equal grade tend to be individualistic in their burning characteristics. Rather, specifications should be used to help simplify coal selection, to reduce the actual number of coals used over a given period; in other words, to have a stabilizing influence on coal or customer turnover. In the final analysis, the use of too many coals per year in a plant is costly to both the consumer and the producer. Too many sources usually result in higher operating and maintenance costs for the consumer and higher sales costs for the producer. Finally, the statement included in the report accompanying the comprehensive Coal Selection Charts prepared by the Coal Committee of the National Association of Purchasing Agents, and released in 1938, is significant. This Committee worked diligently for a period of 15 years seeking to find a scientific and reliable method for selecting coals. The two following paragraphs are quoted from its report: More important is the fact that no ready-made classification or set of specifications can possibly replace the judgment and resourcefulness of an experienced combustion engineer or fuel technologist, nor the usual need for full scale plant tests under the exact conditions of use before a final decision is made.
