THE nature of the decomposition reactions producing hardening in aluminum-rich A1-Ag alloys is now fairly well understood. The silver is not uniformly dispersed even at temperatures above the solvus line: rather, it is clustered into zones and associated with dislocations.' During quenching, nearly all of the silver segregates into zones' and some is attracted to dislocations, producing stacking faults. Growth of these faults produces the semicoherent y precipitate.1 During aging, the larger zones and the y precipitates grow at the expense of the smaller zones. The large zones persist up to about 350°C; where they redissolve in favor of the y' and y precipitates.' The equilibrium hcp y precipitate occurs both by a cellular reaction at the grain boundaries1 and by growth of the Y' plates to a critical size where incoherency results. Damask and Nowick 4 observed an internal friction peak in an A1-6 at. pct Ag alloy at about 140°C (0.25 cps). The peak was found to exhibit a systematic instability. After aging at successively higher temperatures between 155' and 23Z°C, the peak first migrated to higher temperatures while increasing in height, then returned to lower temperatures and decreased in height. After aging at temperatures above about 200°C, the peak position remained constant while the height decreased very slowly. In quenched specimens, elastic after-effect measurements inhcated a rapid initial transient in peak position from low temperatures up to 155°C. The authors concluded that a stress induced growth and resolution of the clusters and the 7' was the most reasonable mechanism to account for the behavior. It would seem, however, very unlikely that both the clusters and the y' precipitate would provide damping contributions whose relaxation time and activation energies were identical, which is required for them to produce the same internal friction peak. The present investigation was motivated by this apparent anomaly and the development of a very low thermal inertia torsion pendulum5 capable of monitoring transient behavior. Low frequency internal friction measurements were made on four binary A1-Ag alloys nominally containing 5, 10: 15, and 20 at. pct Ag. The results of measurements made on a 10 at. pct Ag alloy in the quenched condition are shown in Fig. 1. There are two peaks apparent in the spectrum, one centered at about 160°C, the second at about 210°C. The two peak spectrum was observed in each alloy, but it was best resolved in the 10 pct Ag specimens. Because of the instability in the internal friction, 4 it seemed possible that the second peak was not a peak at all, but simply a manifestation of a single, sharply transient, peak. The equilibria at 1 atm total pressure and 600° to 1300°C (1112° to 2372°F) between gas mixtures with various partial pressures of the reactive constituents (principally sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, water vapor, oxygen or carbon monoxide, and hydrogen) and coexisting solid phases (groups variously including calcium oxide, calcium carbonate, calcium sulfide, calcium sulfate, iron, ferrous sulfide, and the iron oxides) are examined. Tables and charts show the combinations of temperature, oxygen activity, and carbon dioxide partial pressure under which the various groups of the solid phases coexist and the corresponding sulfur dioxide pressures. In the presence of calcium sulfide, calcium sulfate, and calcium oxide, the partial pressure of sulfur dioxide has a peak value at each temperature which increases from 101 atm at about 800°C (1472°F) to 1 atm at about 1200°C (2192°F). With water vapor present, hydrogen sulfide may predominate among gaseous sulfur compounds, particularly at low temperatures and oxygen activities; under all other circumstances considered, sulfur dioxide is the dominant gaseous sulfur-bearing species.

Aluminum forms not only binary compounds with most of the metallic elements but also forms many ternary or more complex constituents. Several of those occurring in the more important alloy systems have been identified under the microscope and the action of various etching reagents has been carefully studied.' The determination of the structure and composition of these complex constituents is a matter of some difficulty and little information is available. X-ray crystal analysis offers a promising method for the study of such constituents. First, and of considerable importance, is the possibility of recognizing the presence of a given constituent by means more positive than microscopic observation. Evidence can also be obtained concerning the nature and composition of the constituent in question and ultimately it should be possible, at least in some cases, to describe the structure including the relative locations of the various atoms. In this paper some results of an uncompleted study of the constituents of the aluminum-iron-silicon system are given and the methods employed are described. Inasmuch as iron and silicon are the chief impurities in aluminum, the constitutional relations of this system are of fundamental importance in the metallurgy of pure aluminum and its alloys; the system has been studied by several investigators and the more important contributions have been reviewed recently.² Fig. 1 shows the structure of the aluminum-rich alloys after prolonged annealing at 560" C., in accord with one of the most recent investigations.3 The ternary alloys examined in the course of the present investigation were all annealed at 550" or 560' C.; in fact, some of the specimens were the identical ones used by nix and Heath, who kindly supplied them for this work. The kinetics of the important reactions occurring in an electrowinning cell have been determined. This information has been used to quantify relationships between the operating variables of current density, solution composition, agitation, and temperature and the resulting current efficiency and deposit quality. Analysis of these results has shown (1) the importance of dissolved iron in determining maximum possible current efficiency and corrosion rate at the cathode suspension loop, (2) the role of agitation, current density, inert salts and temperature in*determining deposit quality and (3) the effects of non-uniformity in the hydrodynamic conditions from the bottom to top of the cell. The significance of the results of this study to the operation of a commercial plant directly treating acid leach solutions is discussed.

The year 1928 has been marked by scattered but considerable wildcat drilling considering the overproduction prevalent in the oil industry. This wildcatting has resulted in the discovery of oil in one interior salt dome, several small fields producing from serpentine, Taylor marl, and Austin chalk, and two new fields producing from the Edwards limestone, one of which in the Bruner or Salt Flat area of Caldwell County promises to be of major importance if not quite as large as the Luling field. Fig. 1 shows production by fields for 1928, compared in the case of the older fields, with that for 1927. New Production From Salt Domes Boggy Creek Dome This salt dome was discovered in 1927 by core drilling and deep tests recommended on the evidence of surface geology. A large block of acreage controlled by the Humble Oil & Refining Co. covers the dome. Since the discovery of the deep-lying salt plug and oil on the flank of this dome in 1927, development has proceeded slowly. Since most of the acreage is controlled in a large block by one company there has been no intensive competitive drilling. Approximately 8 producers and 16 dry holes have been drilled. Production is from the eastern equivalent of the Woodbine and Eagleford horizons of the Mexia district, and has been found extending in a northeast-southnlest direction across the River Neches on the southeast flank of the dome. One of the best wells, the T. H. Jones No. 2, had an initial production of 90 bbl. per hr., and others have made from 100 bbl. per day to 50 bbl. per hr., but production of the better wells has either been shut in or choked down to less than 2000 bbl. per day. At the end of the year the daily average, production was about 2500 bbl. from 8 wells. Considerable gas pressure is present and one well, the Elliot Clark No. 2, drilled in 1927, was shut in with an estimated wet gas production of over 5,000,000 cubic feet.

It was found that a critical boron content exists which yields the maximum boron-hardenability effect in hypoeutectoid steels, as was predicted from the mechanism proposed in a previous paper. The hardenability of boron steels with boron contents between 0.00005 and 0.0017 pct was dependent on the boron content, austenitizing temperature, quenching temperature, and austenite grain size. The effects of these variables on hardenability can be explained by the mechanism previously proposed for the boron effect. A MECHANISM has been proposed to explain the effect of boron on the hardenability of steel.' TECHNIQUES have been developed for growing monocrystals and bicrystals of Fe-20 Cr, Fe-20 Cr-20 Ni, and Fe-18 Cr-8 Ni alloys by both the strain-anneal and the Bridgeman techniques. None of the techniques are new but since they are simple and many people have expressed interest, they are described here quantitatively as they could be modified for other single-phase "commercial" materials of high melting point. CRYSTAL GROWTH BY STRAIN ANNEAL Flat tensile specimens with a tapered gage length were initially studied to deduce the approximate critical strain. Normal flat tensile specimens were then used. The optimum procedure for the austenitic steels (Fe-Cr-Ni) deduced from a variety of cold reductions, recrystallization treatments, tensile strain, and growth anneals was as follows: cold reduce 70 pct, recrystallize (after machining tensile specimens) at 1000°C for 1 hr, strain in tension 2.5 pct, and then heat to 1350°C as rapidly as possible. GENERAL Broken Hill lies at latitude 31º58'S longitude 141º27'E on the semi-arid western plains of New South Wales. From discovery in 1883 until the end of 1969 the lead-silver-zinc orebody has yielded 107,570,000 tons of ore for an overall grade of 13.1% Pb, 6.9 oz Ag/ton and 9.4% Zn.* The orebody currently supports the activities of four mines which are, from north to south, North Broken Hill Limited, Broken Hill South Limited, The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited. It is estimated that in 1969 these mines produced about 8 ½ % of world lead production and about 6% of world zinc production. In 1905 The Zinc Corporation, Limited was founded to recover zinc from tailings dumps and moved into mining in 1911 on leases purchased from Broken Hill South Limited at the then southern extremity of the "line of lode". New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited was formed in 1936 to explore and mine for deep ore in the leases to the south of The Zinc Corporation which were purchased from Barrier South Limited. The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines are both managed by Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Limited, which wholly owns The Zinc Corporation, Limited and has a 32% interest in New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited. * Throughout this paper tons referred to are long tons of 2,240 lbs.

In the preparation of zirconium and hafnium metals, there are many indications that impurity levels control the physical and chemical properties of the metal. The purpose of this work was to develop methods of producing pure raw materials that could be reduced to highly pure metals. Early work by the Carbomcndum Metals Co. and others indicated that certain fused salts were highly efficient in the removal of impurities from gaseous zirconium tetrachloride. We have developed workable fused salts along with a continuous and higly efficient scrubber design which can be used to produce very pure zirconium tetrachloride. Metal made from the purified tetrachloride has been shown to approach crystal bar metal in purity. Scrubber designs are discussed with recommended materials of construction. VARIOUS methods have been used to purify zirconium (and hafnium) tetrachloride. Most of these methods involve thermal degassing initially (the removal of more volatile compounds at temperatures below that where zirconium tetrachloride exhibits a significant vapor pressure) followed by a sublimation step (which conveniently leaves the nonvolatiles behind.) While these procedures effect definite purification, such processing is batchwise and does not result in optimum purification. Early work by The Carborundum Metals Co. and others indicated that fused salts were highly efficient in the removal of impurities from gaseous zirconium tetrachloride. The objective of this work was to develop a continuous fused-salt scrubbing process that would yield high-purity zirconium and hafnium tetrachlorides. The term "fused salt" refers to the molten state of ionic compounds and as used here, specifically refers to alkali metal and alkaline earth halides. Fused salts, because of their many valuable properties, are becoming increasingly im- portant industrially. These valuable properties of the fused salts are: 1) stability at elevated temperatures; 2)low vapor pressure; 3) low viscosity; 4) ability to dissolve many different materials; and 5) good elctctrical conductivity. All but the last property enhances the use of fused salts as scrubbing agents for zirconium and hafnium tetrachlorides. Fused-salt scrubbing may be defined for our purpose as the intimate contact between a gaseous compound and a molten salt with the purpose of removing impurities from the gaseous compound. In this case, the gaseous compound is zirconium tetrachloride which submlimes at 331°C. When this gas is contacted with a molten salt, impurities such as aluminum, iron, and titanium are removed and the resulting product is considered fused-salt scrubbed. Zirconium and hafnium are sold to a purity specification. Generally speaking, normal production without scrubbing is capable of meeting specifications. There are, however, several considerations That make the knowledge of methods of additional purification highly desirable. These are: 1) the control of product analysis; 2) the production of a pure product for special applications; 3) the salvaging of off-specification material; and 4) the use of raw materials with higher impurity levels than 1 he present raw materials. You will note that items 1 and 2 are somewhat complementary to each other and that item 4 assumes that The present process has impurity removal limitations. To better understand the part that fused-salt scrubbing of zirconium tetrachloride plays in the manufacture of zirconium, Fig. 1 contains an illustrated flow sheet of the industrial production of zirconium metal. MANY processes for cleaning coal that are in use depend primarily on physical properties of coal and refuse other than specific gravity and surface conditions relating to froth flotation. These properties are shape, coefficient of sliding friction, resilience, friability, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical conductivity. In many of these processes specific gravity does have some effect and many separators are designed to utilize more than one of the physical properties cited. Although the processes described herein do not have a widespread application, yet for specific coals and specific conditions, they are economically important. A problem confronting many coal-mining districts is the marketing of the slacks or screenings and dust passing the final sizing screens. Processes in commercial use installed primarily to increase the form value, and hence the market value, of these slacks and dusts include briquetting, packaging, and low-temperature carbonization. MECHANICAL PICKERS Machines utilizing shape, frictional resistance, and differences in resilience of coal and impurities are usually called mechanical pickers. They require a closely sized feed, therefore their use is confined to the pea, nut, and egg sizes. Various types of these devices are described by Berrisford, 1, 2 Taggart,3 and Peele.4 Shape In general, coal differs in shape from its accompanying dirt throughout the range of commercial sizes. Coal, breaking into roughly cubical particles, contains a greater number of axes that are approximately the same length than does the dirt. The latter, consisting of pieces of slate and shale and lenses of pyrite, is flatter in nature. Further, flat coal often has a dirty, slaty appearance, even though of high quality. Mechanical pickers known as flat pickers, or "flatters," are widely used in the Pennsylvania anthracite region to remove flat coal .from the final clean coal. This practice greatly improves the appearance of the final market product. Flat pickers for removing impurities or flat coal ("flats") are usually installed on shaker screens, shaking conveyors, and chutes. In Fig. 1 three

The development of a process for the treatment of telluride concentrates at Emperor Gold Mining Co. Vatukoula, is discussed. The concentrate is produced by flotation in cyanide solution immediately after milling. Two stages of cleaning are employed and a high-grade concentrate is produced usually containing more than 50% of the precious metal. The process developed in the first instance involved batch roasting followed by batch leaching in strong cyanide solution, recovering gold and silver only. The procedure currently employed is chemical oxidation of the tellurides using hypochlorite as the oxidant in a basic solution of a caustic soda and sodium carbonate. After oxidation the gold and silver are recovered by cyanidation. The residue is then leached with sodium sulfide and elemental tellurium precipitated with sodium sulfite.

IN A previous paper1 the authors dealt with the physical properties of cold-rolled and heat-treated Britannia metal of the approximate composition Sn, 91 per cent., Sb, 7 per cent. and Cu, 2 per cent. It was found that cold rolling to more than 50 per cent. reduction produced a continuous softening of the metal when measured by the Brinell machine, whereas the Shore instrument indicated increased hardness; that the strength of the material followed the Brinell hardness and that the metal therefore became weaker the more it was cold-rolled; and further, it was found that hardness and strength could be largely restored to the cold-rolled metal by "baking" for about one hour at any temperature, between 200° and 450° F., the melting point. The higher the baking temperature, the more effective was the heat treatment as far as increased hardness was concerned. It seemed to be of little importance whether the metal was soaked or not at the baking temperature for a great length of time and the rate of cooling seemed to be immaterial. The present paper deals with the same alloy and more particularly with the resistance towards various forms of stress - tensile, bend and deep drawing. The metallography of Britannia metal has in part also been covered and an explanation attempted for the abnormal behavior of this alloy.

Introduction Coal is found in every major geographic region through-out Alaska and in two offshore areas. Since about 1852, more than 100 small mines have opened and closed. In 1981 and 1982 production was almost entirely from one mine in central Alaska. Clearly, the utilization of Alaska's abundant coal resources presents political, economic, and technical problems that are far from solution. Location and Physical Features Figure 1 illustrates the geographical and geological similarity between Alaska and the western US. Alaska's Arctic region generally resembles Wyoming and the Dakotas. The Brooks Range is an extension of the Rocky Mountains. The central region of Alaska between the Brooks Range and the Alaska Range bears a general resemblance to the basin and range country of the western US. The southcentral and southeastern regions have a similar resemblance to the Sierra Nevadas and the West Coast. The Arctic, the central, and the southcentral regions have major coal fields. The southeast region has scattered occurrences. The topographic, climatic, and economic characteristics of each are different. These differences have a large effect on practical mining methods. Description of Alaskan Coal Coal deposits known in Alaska are almost all of Cretaceous or Tertiary age, much younger than the Carboniferous coal deposits of eastern and midwestern states. Consequently, most Alaskan coals have a higher moisture content and a lower heat value. Most Alaskan coals also have a much lower sulfur content. Low volatile bituminous, and anthracite coals occur in Alaska, but most Alaskan coals range downward in rank from high volatile bituminous to subbituminous and lignite. Alaskan coals are similar to coals of the northern Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains. Arctic Region Northern Alaska Coal Fields Northern Alaska coal fields are by far the largest group of coal deposits in Alaska (Fig. 2). Coal-bearing rocks extend from the foothills of the Brooks Range about 160 km (100 miles) northward to within about 80 km (50 miles) of the Arctic coast. The principal known occurrences are between the Colville River and the western coast. However, coal has been found eastward almost to the Canning River and westward under the Arctic Ocean. The northern Alaska coal fields are in a series of Cretaceous rocks that suggest a deltaic depositional environment. The beds tend to occur in series of up to eight or nine beds totaling 6-9 m (20-30 ft) of coal. However, beds 6-12 m (20-40 ft) thick have been reported, and beds 1-3 m (3-10 ft) thick seem to be relatively common. Including thin seams, coal in some places makes up about 10% of the stratigraphic section. However, no area has been explored in sufficient detail to block out any large body of reserves or to make reliable estimates of the total resource. Observation points in drill holes and along river and stream banks are few and far between. Coals in northern Alaskan fields tend to range in rank from bituminous, where moderately folded and faulted in the foothills, to subbittuminous in the gently folded rocks under the coastal plain. Coals toward the eastern extremities of the coal fields may be of Tertiary age and lower in rank, but the same general correlation between degree of folding and increase in rank can be expected. Replacement of active groups in corn starch, as shown by results of the starch derivatives tested, impairs rather than improves the value of corn starch as a selective iron oxide depressant. Increased ability to depress iron oxides is generally accompanied by a parallel ability to depress quartz. PEARL starch, a corn starch prepared with a minimum of alteration, is a good selective depressant for iron oxide minerals.' From what is known of the complex chemistry of corn starch, there is evidence that it consists of a mixture of saturated giant polymeric molecules, both straight and branch-chained, the constituents consisting of glucose units with hydroxyl radicals as active or polar groups. What is the economic basis for direct, continuous particle size measurement and control? First, precise grinding control is necessary to achieve and maintain a specified recovery and throughput. Second, throughput and recovery are direct functions of particle size-and these two factors control the economic performance of the ore concentration process. Third, only size-based control using a particle size and percent solids monitor (PSM) has achieved the necessary precise control. Recovery, throughput and cost can be accurately measured for various concentrator operating conditions if particle size is closely controlled. From such data the economic results of different particle size grind points can be analyzed. This will reveal the best combination of recovery and throughput to meet objectives established by financial management. Predictable, repeatable response to set-point selection is essential if the projected profitability of the mill is to be reached.

The Upper Santa Cruz Basin lies in the drainage area of the Santa Cruz River in Arizona, and extends upstream from the community of Rillito to the international boundary [(Fig. 1)]. The principal water use area lies between, and includes, the cities of Tucson and Nogales. A subsurface geologic barrier near Rillito provides a reasonable dividing line between the ground waters of the upper and lower Santa Cruz basins. The upper basin contains the Tucson and Sahuarita-Continental critical ground water areas. The Tucson water use area encompasses the Tucson metropolitan area and extends from the northern boundary of the basin south to the boundary between the Tucson and Sahuarita-Continental critical ground water areas near San Xavier. The San Xavier use area is the San Xavier Indian Reservation. The north and south boundaries of the Continental use area coincide with the limits of the Sahuarita-Continental critical ground water area. The first study of ground water in this valley was initiated by Dr. G. E. P. Smith in 1905, and the results were published in 1910, followed by a series of bulletins of the Arizona Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Arizona, covering the general field of ground water development and utilization. Beginning in 1939, the ground water branch of the US Geologic Survey, in cooperation with the Arizona State Land Department and the Arizona Water Commission (AWC), published a series of bulletins concerning ground water occurrence and utilization in various areas of the state. In 1975 and 1977, the AWC published the Arizona State Water Plan (Arizona Water Commission, 1975) comprising a detailed inventory of water availability and use in Arizona and a study of alternative futures. The importance of ground water supplies in the Upper Santa Cruz Valley cannot be overemphasized. Metropolitan Tucson, surrounding agricultural areas, and the mineral industry are completely dependent upon ground water. Agriculture has been the largest user of ground water. The land distribution of the Upper Santa Cruz Basin is rural in character with large tracts of land included in national monuments and national forests. The Upper Santa Cruz is one of several state basins that does not depend upon one single industry as its major economic activity. Agriculture, mining, tourism, international commerce, and manufacturing all contribute to a viable economy. The city of Nogales, on the Mexican border, and the city of Tucson, to the North, are the centers of commerce in the basin.

The simultaneous solution of the volumerric balance and the unsteady-state equation has been used for several years to make performance calculations for combination drive reservoirs. This method makes possible the calculation of volumetric changes of fluids in the gas cap, oil zone, and aquifer which occur as a result of withdrawals and reservoir pressure changes. It does not provide a means for the determination of reservoir fluid distribution changes corresponding to these vollrmetric changes. A knowledge of the fluid saturation distribution in the reservoir at various stages of depletion is important for the determination of the efficiency of gas and water as oil-displacement media and, therefore, for the reliable predicrion of ultimate oil recovery. To provide this knowledge, the displacement equations are solved simultaneously with the volumetric balance and unsteady-state equations. The described calculation procedure has been used satisfactorily to analyze the past performance and to predict the future behavior of combination drive reservoirs under both primary and pressure-maintenance operations. INTRODUCTION The three basic mechanisms by which oil is displaced from a reservoir are: (1) dissolved gas drive—the displacement of oil by the expansion of liberated solution gas, (2) water drive—the displacement of oil by water which enters the oil zone from the aquifer, and (3) gas cap drive—the displacement of oil by gas which ex- pands into the oil zone from the gas cap. The action of gravitational forces may be effective in increasing the efficiency of the basic drive mechanisms. Gravitational forces favor the segregation both of gas and oil and of oil and water, thus tending to shorten the transition zone between oil and displacing fluids. Most reservoirs produce under the influence of a combination of these drives and are designated "combination drive reservoirs". Fig. 1 is a cross section of a typical combination drive reservoir. A calculation procedure for analyzing the performance of combination drive reservoirs has been developed by combining the displacement equations' with the volumetric balance equation' and the unsteady-state equations. The pressure-production performance and the positions of the gas-oil and oil-water contacts are calculated for several stages of reservoir depletion by solving these equations simultaneously, thus affording a basis for: 1. Determining instantaneous and ultimate oil, gas, and water production under various operating conditions. 2. 'Establishing a maximum efficient rate of production, 3. Determining the advantages of pressure maintenance and unitization, and 4. Designing surface installations necessary for primarv and pressure-maintenance operations.
