Twenty-two pit slides that occurred in two Canadian open pit mining properties are analyzed. Information on the results of laboratory tests of the rocks and a brief description of the geological environment are also presented. One deduction from the study is that slides seem to be predictable by using established theory. This corroboration indicates that, contrary to normal mining practice, the appropriate slope angle should vary with the height of the wall. In addition, if the general ground water level around an open pit can be reduced, the appropriate slope angles of the walls could then be increased by a determinable amount. The ultimate objective of these investigations is to determine the relationship between the percentage probability of failure of any slope designed with specific strength paraheters. With this relationship it would then be possible to determine optimum slope angles. Because of changes in various economic factors, open pits are now being mined to much greater depths than previously. The need to keep stripping ratios low without endanrrerine.-- lives and equipment provides a strong incentive to determine the maximum practicable wall slopes. Applied research work is currently being conducted to establish the methods for analyzing optimum slopes.

High manganese slags of low phosphorus and iron content are produced by air oxidation of high phosphorus spiegeleisen in a basic-lined converter. Control of phosphorus and iron within specification limits for ferromanganese ore feed is obtained by a unique cyclic operating procedure. Various types of slags, or synthetic manganese ore, can be made. AN affiliated paper' describes the production of high phosphorus spiegeleisen containing 14 to 23 pct Mn and up to 4 pct P in an experimental blast furnace from open-hearth slag or manganiferous iron ore. This phosphorus content is too high for use of the spiegel in normal steel-production operations. Consequently, a preferential separation must be effected whereby the manganese is concentrated in a product that is usable in industrial operations. The preferential separation methods being investigated for this phase of the work are confined to pyrometal-lurgical processes for ready incorporation into steel-plant operations. It is fortunate that manganese is more actively oxidizable than iron or phosphorus, and therein lies a preferential separation method for isolating manganese from these two elements. Silicon is more strongly oxidizable than manganese, and its oxidation precedes, or occurs simultaneously, with manganese. Therefore, manganese and silicon are separable into a high manganese oxide slag phase while the phosphorus and iron remain in the molten metallic state. Complete separation of these elements represents an ideal condition which is not generally attainable in actual operations. This pyro-metallurgical method for separating manganese from phosphorus and iron by preferential oxidation was investigated by blowing 500 lb of metal in a basic-lined vessel to obtain preliminary information on the effectiveness of the procedure. Certain conditions of attainment in the separation process are desirable in any method for removing manganese from high phosphorus spiegeleisen, such as: 1—High recovery of manganese in the oxidation product; 2—the product to be of equal or better quality than ferromanganese-grade ore—48 pct Mn minimum, less than 10 pct SiO2, and Mn-P ratio of 300:1; and 3—attainment of the enumerated objectives in a product amenable to industrial handling, such as a slag of high manganese content that will flow from the processing vessel and of sufficient fluidity for ready separation of metallic granules that may have become mixed with the manganese slag phase. Previous Work Recovery of manganese from low grade ores and industrial byproduct slags by smelting to spiegeleisen, with subsequent oxidation to synthetic ferro-manganese-feed ores, has been a subject for periodic investigation during the past four or five decades in the United States and Germany. Joseph' and associates of the Bureau of Mines North Central Experiment Station, Minneapolis, Minn., smelted manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna range, Minn., to spiegeleisen and subsequently tried air and ore oxidation procedures for concentrating the manganese into synthetic ferrograde manganese ore. Joseph's results on the operation of a side-blown basic-lined converter for air oxidation of manganese from molten spiegeleisen were so discouraging that the procedure was abandoned after 11 blowing tests. Much slag was thrown from the converter vessel; phosphorus content was four to five times the maximum allowable for ferro ore; and a manganese-iron ratio of only 2 or 3:1 was obtained in the slag instead of the required 8:1. Oxidation of manganese from spiegeleisen with about 0.5 pct P, by adding iron ore to molten spiegel in an experimental open-hearth furnace, proved moderately successful in Joseph's experiments. The main drawback to the operation was the necessity for over-oreing for effective oxidation of the manganese with consequent too high iron oxide residual in the slag. Furthermore, the phosphorus content was proportional to the iron concentration and therefore much too high, so that several hours of reduction by a carbonaceous material were required to adjust the iron and phosphorus to the desired content of high grade ferro feed. A troublesome feature of the slag product of the spiegel oxidation process was its lack of fluidity if the silica content was less than 10 pct, the concentration considered desirable for the synthetic ore. An approximate but simple and practical solution to the discretized batch grinding equation has been obtained. The solution is based on a new grind function, a combination of selection and breakage parameters and particle-size distribution of the feed. The grind function, which is readily computed from limited experimental data, has significant implications for analysis of the particle-size reduction processes. Using the practical solution, three ball-mill comminution systems—dry dolomite, wet quartz, and limestone—have been simulated with acceptable precision. The application of the discretized batch-grinding equation1 to routine comminution analysis is frustrated by two principal difficulties. First, the selection and breakage parameters of the grinding equation must be computed separately. This is usually a difficult and uncertain task although, recently, a number of experimentally and computationally efficient strategies have been proposed for determination of these parameters?" Second, for actual computation, the solution to the batch-grinding equation becomes progressively tedious and unwieldly for finer particle-size range.1,2 The purpose of this part of the report is to present an approximate solution to the batch-grinding equation, which is practical in that it seems to overcome the aforementioned obstacles. The solution involves the concepts of a new grind function, a lumped parameter of the selection-breakage functions, and particle-size distribution of the feed, which is readily computed from a limited amount of experimental data.

This paper reviews recent developments in the application of classification practice to the origination of fine-grinding flow sheets and traces the history of the mechanical classifier from its initial application for separating cyanide process sands and slimes down to its present six or more distinctly different applications at copper concentrators; it undertakes to show also, by reference to diagrammatic fine-grinding flow sheets and accompanying operating data from nine copper concentrators in western North America, the advantages gained from improved classi-ficiation flow sheets at these properties in terms of reduced grinding costs, improved flexibility of operation or increased recovery. Comparison is only made between different fine-grinding flow sheets at a given plant and no attempt is made to compare different concentrators, on account of ore variations and differences in metallurgical objectives sought,. The adoption of the flotation process in recent years, and especially the development of selective flotation, has brought a demand for much finer grinding than formerly. This has caused much thought to be given to grinding efficiency, and today there is hardly a mill where the grinding flow sheet is not under close study and subject to frequent changes. When closed-circuit grinding was introduced into metallurgy some years ago, its value was recognized at once, and since then the combination of mills and classifiers has been regarded and operated as a grinding unit. Apart from variations in both the grinding and classifying elements of this unit, there have been many variations in grouping tried by different mills to suit varying conditions of ore and plant limitations. Although operators feel that in most cases their present flow sheets are on trial, and the data on present work are often incomplete, we have felt that a discussion of the progress that has been made and an endeavor to show present trends and their results should be of use to the profession. We have therefore prepared flow sheets of some of the larger mills with which we have been in contact and present them with available data as to their results, in the hope that they may be of service now rather than later when practice may have become more standardized and more complete records and analyses have been made. TWO types of automatic drilling controls, the Halliburton and the Hild, are now available and are coming into more or less general use in deep drilling. The primary function of both is to maintain a safe limit of torque on the drill pipe, this being accomplished by automatically controlling the weight or pressure on the cutting tool. Neither type will necessarily increase drilling speed, but by permitting advantage to be taken of "breaks" in the hole higher average cutting speed may be maintained. The control is essentially a safety device, and should be considered as such. It is not the purpose of this paper to discuss the merits of drilling controls, although the advantages over manual feed at the brake drum are obvious, but rather to point out some of the limitations. The Halliburton Control The Halliburton control is designed to operate during drilling through the agency of the draw works. Automatic and constant control of the torque on the bit is governed by clutches on the control itself, and the line shaft to drum shaft drives on the draw works. In operations other than drilling the control is simply a jackshaft between prime mover and draw works. It is, of course, adaptable to any type of power. Because control of the torque on the bit is dependent on the various ratios or clutch combinations available on the Halliburton control and the draw works, it follows that there are certain limitations in points of control. Table 1 shows the possible ratios which can be obtained with the control and a popular type of three-speed draw works, it being assumed that the highest possible gear combination—the combination which when engaged will suspend the least amount of weight—has a value of 1.00. According to the table there are "blind spots" in the series. This is true particularly among the lowest ratios, which are most used to suspend the major part of the weight when great depths are reached. THE WORLD Coal, as a source of energy and as a source of coke for the smelting of iron ore, has contributed significantly to the development of every major industrial nation of the world A number of other materials-oil, natural gas, wood, waste materials, water, and, in some applications, nuclear materials -can be used satisfactorily for the generation of heat and energy, but no generally acceptable and economic substitute has been found to supplant coke in iron ore smelting in conventional blast furnaces. In the development of many nations, coal provided the initial source of energy for industrialization Although coal provided more than 60% of the world's energy each year between 1902 and 1929, oil and natural gas have surpassed it as a source of energy in more recent years (Ref. 38, pp. 439, 441). Despite the rapid rise in importance of other fuels, a considerable amount of the total energy consumed is still supplied by coal. In 1972, coal supplied 32.1 % of the total world energy (Ref. 49, pp. 2-3). To produce this energy, 2.4 billion metric tons of coal were consumed-a 16.0% increase over the amount consumed in 1962. A further worldwide increase in the amount of coal used to supply energy is projected. According to Dr. Karlheinz Bund (Ref. 37, p 145), by the year 2000 world coal consumption could amount to 5 billion mt. Coal Resources and Production The world's coal resources are estimated to be about 10,872 billion mt. Of this amount, 1,297 billion mt are classified as measured reserves (Ref. 50, p. 57). In Table 13.A.1 the estimates of measured reserves and total resources, recent production, and the ratio of measured reserves to production of major coal-producing countries are shown. About 90% of the world's total coal resources are estimated to be in the USSR, the United States, and China. The United States ranks second in the world in coal resources, but in measured reserves, it ranks first. Because of the difference in rate at which available coal resources are being exploited, the ratio of measured reserves to actual production varies widely among areas and countries. France and East Germany have the lowest reserve to production ratios, 49.5 and 60.1, respectively. In Mexico, where currently less than 5 million mtpy of coal are produced, the ratio is 1257 For all countries producing more than 200 million mtpy of coal (except East Germany), the ratio ranges from 350 to 670. For the United States, the ratio is 669.7. In Table 13.A.2, distribution of the world's coal resources by area is shown. This paper concerns the rupture or breakdown of rock formations as related to drilling, completing, and stimulating production of wells, and comprises data compiled from a study of literature and records of treatment of oil and gas wells. and from tests conducted in bores drilled into rock cores and outcrops of rock. Results of the investigation indicate that the internal pressure to rupture cylinders of rock and to breakdown rock formations surrounding a bore in the earth is dependent upon the extent of intrusion of fluids. the position of bedding planes. the ratio of internal to external diameter, the tensile strength of rock, and magnitude of confining pressure, and is independent of the size of bore, degree of fluid saturation. and temperature of rock within practical limits. It is concluded that the mathematical relationship of pressure in bores and stresses in the surrounding rock must not be limited by the simplifying assumptions of homogeneity. isotropy, and impermeability; that the incidence of lost circulation of drilling fluids to induced fractures may be reduced by preventing intrusion of fluids into the small intrinsic fractures along weak bedding planes; and that the magnitude of the breakdown pressure of wells to be treated may be lowered by removal of mud cake. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss the results of tests which may serve to broaden the understanding of the phenomena of rupture or breakdown of rock and thus contribute to the improvement of the techniques for drilling and completing wells. including such operations as preventing lost circulation, stimulating production, and placing cement. Since the early recognition of the possibility of rupturing rock adjacent to a well by fluid pressure, the distribution and magnitude of stresses around a well and the internal pressure to cause failure have been expressed mathematically by application of the principles defining the elastic and inelastic behavior of thick-walled cylinders of a homogeneous. isotropic, impermeable material. In either the elastic or plastic state, if the conditions of homogeneity. isotropy, and impermeability were the normal characteristics of rock. there would be no reason to question the validity of the above principles when applied to rock. However. since most rock formations are characteristically permeable to some degree, contain bedding planes and small intrinsic fractures. and are heterogeneous, rendering invalid the assumptions of homogeneity, isotropy, and impermeability, the application of the thick-walled cylinder theories to the behavior of rock formations penetrated by a bore appears illogical. Also the failure to consider the effect of the properties of the drilling fluids, which certainly intrude in various degrees into most rock formations. is further cause for questioning the application of these principles. Even in the case of cylinders of hardened chrome-nickel steel, which would he considered relatively homogeneous isotropic. and impermeable, as compared to rock, it has been observed that the internal pressure capable of being withstood by the cylinders varied with the sizes of molecules comprising the rupturing fluid used. Because of these apparent weaknesses in the theories of the behavior of thick-walled cylinders when applied to bores in rock, and the importance of knowing the true behavior of rock under the influence of fluid pressure when planning drilling and completing procedures for wells, tests were undertaken to determine by observation the actual rupturing pressure of cylinders of rock and the effects of such variables as environmental conditions and characteristics of rock formations, fluid properties, and bore dimensions. It was intended that by these tests the validity of the thick-walled cylinder theories when applied to rock would be determined and, if found invalid, mathematical expressions would be derived for predicting stress and rupturing pressure of rock formations under various conditions. Since the derivation of mathematical expressions has been only partially completed, all of the results of the latter phase are not included in this paper. The X-ray Kossel-line method has been used preaioz~sly for measuring lattice parameters to accuracies of 1 part in 100,000.5 A second application of this method is described for determining the crystallographic orientation of a randomly positioned single-crysta1 spherical volume that can he as small as 50 µ in diameter, within accuracy limits of ±1/2 deg. The theory, experimental procedure, and interpretation of Kossel-line patterns and an experimenta1 verification of the predicted orientation relationship of the cph k and fee a Cu-Si phases are presented. This orientation relationship can be described as (111)a, (00.1)k; [110]a [11.0]k. In addition, the lattice parameter of the a phase was found to he a. = 3.62154 ± 0.00014Å. The Kossel-line method when used in conjunction with electron microanalysis is shown to he capable of providing a complete chemical and structural analysis of a given crystal. THE most easily accomplished methods for determining the orientation of a single crystal are variations of the Laue X-ray diffraction method. Although certain materials can be oriented to within ± 1 deg accuracy by observation of exterior macroscopic features, such as etch pits, cleavage faces, or growth features, the Laue method is generally preferred for routine laboratory application. Both back-reflection and transmission patterns are coordinated by appropriate reference charts and are plotted in terms of reflection plane poles (normals) on a stereographic projection. Orientation is deduced by relating the pole distribution (which is fixed by the crystallographic symmetry of the specimen) to two specified external reference directions. The Laue method has several limitations. 1) Orientation can rarely be determined to better than ±l deg accuracy. Principal errors involve inaccuracy in specimen-to-film distance, measurement confidence of individual Laue spots, and stereographic plotting. 2) Because of the indeterminacy of the X-ray wave length diffracted to a given spot, it is not possible to determine supplementary crystallographic data, such as interplanar spacings and lattice parameters. 3) The method is generally limited to specimens of cubic symmetry or to specimens of high symmetry and known structure. 4) The relatively large cross-sectional area of the incident X-ray beam generally precludes the measurement of relative grain orientation in a polycrystalline material.* _____ Several of these limitations can be overcome by application of the Kossel-line method, which has been previously employed for precision lattice-parameter determinations.'-= For this method, a point source of divergent monochromatic X-rays is generated within the crystal by means of an incident electron beam. The divergent X-rays which fulfill the Bragg law are diffracted by the specimen and are recorded on a film placed either in transmission or back reflection. Analysis of the film yields a direct measurement of orientation and lattice-spacing values to an accuracy of ±1/2 pct. As analyses can be obtained from spherical specimen volumes as small as 50 µ in diameter, the method provides a means for structural analysis of second-phase or impurity precipitates within a given matrix. The primary limitation of the Kossel-line method is the requirement for an electron microanalyzer or similar apparatus capable of producing a finely focused electron beam. This paper is designed to present the theory, experimental procedure, and geometrical interpretation of Kossel patterns. The experimentally determined orientation relationship between the k and a phases occurring in the Cu-Si system and a precision measurement of the a lattice parameter are presented as a practical application of the method. THEORY OF KOSSEL LINES Divergent X-ray beam photography utilizes an effective point source of characteristic X-rays which, when diffracted from a single crystal, form numerous diffraction and absorption cones that are recorded on film.7 The cones generated from a source lying within the crystal are called Kossel lines.' Although the X-ray scattering from a divergent point source contained within a crystal is described in terms of Laue dynamical theory,9 the directions of the diffracted spectra can be ade-

A method is presented for predicting pressure drop for two-phase fluid flow in horizontal pipes. A set of 267 experimental measurements randomly sampled from approximately 1,000 measurements from various literature sources was used. Pressure gradients calculated by the procedure developed and compared with the experimental values showed a bias of +0.82 per cent and a standard deviation of 20.8 per cent. The advantatges of this method over other available methods of predicting two-phase flow pressure drop are (a) its comparative simplicity of application, (b) its relative independence of flow patterns, (c) its accuracy, which on the basis of a statistical evaluation predicts pressure drop closer than other available methods, and, (d) its ability to satisfactorily correlate laboratory data from various sources while the correlations from these sources do not appear to agree with one another. The method has been reduced to a simplified graphical procedure, suitable for field use. A two-phase f factor is defined and correlated with parameters involving the flowing gas-liquid mass ratio, a Reynolds number for the gas phase, and a Reynolds number for the liquid phase. The choice of parameters allows the correlation to reduce to the usual f factor plot for the limiting conditions of (111 gas or all liquid. INTRODUCTION The mechanics and characteristics of two-phase flow systems have been of interest throughout the industry for some time. In numerous engineering installations such as pipe lines, chemical reactors, and heat exchangers, two-phase flow conditions are of every day occurrence. In oil production operations it has been desirable, in some cases, to consider transporting gas and oil together in a common pipe from oil field to process plant. The trend toward centrally located stock tank batteries in oil fields has resulted in longer gathering pipelines in which more than one fluid phase is flowing. The increase in the producing capacity of oil wells due to new production tech- niques has created the need for review and re-design of many surface gathering lines for properly handling the increased production. Optimum pipe size for the situations described above has become an important factor. The problem which is of interest here involves the ability to predict the relationship between pressure drop, fluid properties, fluid rates, pipe diameter, and pipe length. Although the literature1,5,10,13,18,19 contains various articles dealing with specific cases of the problem, Lock-hart and Martinelli17 proposed the most general solution. Their method has been later modified by Baker:1 Alves2 demonstrated that different flow patterns are possible for a flow mechanism defined by Martinelli such as gas turbulent, liquid turbulent. Baker explained deviations experienced with Martinelli's correlations on the basis that different flow patterns could exist for the same flow mechanism. Using Martinelli's method of correlatioil, Baker correlated data for each flow pattern for the turbulent-turbulent flow mechanism. A technique has been developed which makes it possible to determine the spreading pressure of liquids and solids, for simple systems. Data for surface tensions, interfacial tensions, spreading pressures, and contact angles for water, heptane, and silica are tabulated.' These results can be applied to the evaluation of capillary rise and displacement pressure in a petroleum reservoir. Appropriate equations are presented and the application of these equations is discussed. The presence of surface-active components affects both capillary rise and displacement pressure and also seems to influence the rate of fluid flow. The purpose of this paper is to supplement and bring up to date the last article on the subject of the surface chemistry of petroleum reservoirs, that of Garrison in the 1935 Oil and Gas Journa1.1 A discussion of the "adhesion tension" concept used by Garrison has been presented in another publication,2 together with the reasons for the recommendation that the term "adhesion tension" be abandoned. In view of the fact that some of the data used by Garrison have been superseded by more recent work, it seemed advisable to call attention to this fact and present the more important data currently believed to be correct. In the earlier paper, Garrison set up the equations that 'relate solid-oil and solid-water interfacial tensions to each other, and applied data from Bartell and Miller3 to these equations. However the adhesion tension measurements made by Bartell and Miller involved a confusion of symbols, so that they did not actually measure the spreading pressure, ?s — ?sf.2 The spreading pressure is a convenient method of indicating the amount by which the surface energy of a solid surface is lowered on immersion in a liquid or vapor. Since the initial value of the free surface energy is represented by the symbol ?s and the final value is ?sF, the spreading pressure is ?s — ?SF. A technique has now been developed4 that makes possible the determination of ?s — ?sF for simple systems. This method would be very difficult to carry out with a multicomponent system such as exists in the petroleum reservoir. However, already results have been obtained for ?s — ?sF for water and heptane in contact with silica and graphite. These values will be of the same order of magnitude as those in the petroleum reservoir. Accordingly, it is possible for the first time to discuss the surface-energy relations of the petroleum reservoir on a semi-quantitative basis. Preliminary Generalizations A petroleum reservoir may contain the following four phases: gas, hydrocarbon liquid, aqueous liquid, and solid. Since the initial value of the free surface energy is represented by the symbol ?s and the final value is ?sF, the spreading pressure is ?s — ?SF. A technique has now been developed4 that makes possible the determination of ?s — ?sF for simple systems. This method would be very difficult to carry out with a multicomponent system such as exists in the petroleum reservoir. However, already results have been obtained for ?s — ?sF for water and heptane in contact with silica and graphite. These values will be of the same order of magnitude as those in the petroleum reservoir. Accordingly, it is possible for the first time to discuss the surface-energy relations of the petroleum reservoir on a semi-quantitative basis. Log washers have been used for many years in the washing of clay iron ores, phosphate rock and manganese ores, but not until the past 15 years have they been employed to any extent in the preparation of aggregate materials and fluxing stone. For a machine of such importance where tenacious clay or soft rock must be eliminated, there are few data generally available. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the results obtained from several operations, together with a few suggestions for planning a specific installation. Where the material to be washed out consists of loose surface soil, silt, or small amounts of quickly soluble clay, there is little competition with other forms of washers, because greater power and maintenance are required for the operation of log washers, but where the foreign matter is a stiff clay, such as occurs with high-calcium limestones and in marginal gravel deposits, the ability of other kinds of washers to eliminate completely the hard clay balls is at least uncertain. Then the log washer comes into its own field, for with the breaking and churning action of the logs it will clean out the toughest clay. Even with material from the hydraulic dredge, if it contains tough clay, the log washer is desirable unless the gravel is subjected to a costly soaking and rehandling process. Recently there has been a considerable development in other types of machines to accomplish these results but it is not within the scope of this paper to make comparisons between competitive types, but to present the best obtainable data on log washers only. From the primitive design that gave it its name, a long log hewn from a tree, with paddles forged to shape from strap iron and attached by lag screws, the log washer has gradually been developed to the present all-steel type. As now manufactured, the log washer consists essentially of two built-up logs on which are mounted a series of paddles, carried by shafts fitted at the ends of the logs on bearings fastened outside the enclosing steel box, or trough, which is set at an angle of about 5" to 10" and into which the material is fed. The operating plant of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. is situated at Port Pirie in South Australia and it treats to finality the whole output of lead concentrates from the mines of The Zinc Corporation Ltd., North Broken Hill Ltd., and aroken Hill South Ltd. at Broken Hill, New South Wales. Lead bearing ores from other sources are also purchased for treatment and lead scrap and residues are treated on a toll charge basis. The present output of the plant is approximately 200000 tonnes of refined lead per annum and there is a substantial production of by-products including refined silver, gold, cadmium, antimonial lead alloys, copper matte and sulphuric acid. Recently the Company commenced the production of zinc by slag fuming and electrolysis from a six million ton dump of lead blast furnace slag, which has been accumulating at Port Pirie for over fifty years. The slag fuming plant contains two furnaces of conventional design, but features a high degree of pre-heat for the blast air and this is obtained by the use of all-metal recuperators. The raw zinc oxide fume produced by the plant is roasted in a rotary kiln prior to treatment in the leaching and electrolysis sections, which follow conventional practice for nigh current density plants. Present output is approximately 36000 tonnes of electrolytic zinc per annum.

The relative positions of the salt-forming and complex-forming groups are such that most frequently a four, five, or six-membered ring results through this double attachment of the cation.1-6 The formation of inner-complex ring systems depends not only upon the nature and suitable position of the salt-forming and complex-forming groups for ring closure, but, to a great extent, also on the nature of the metallic cation entering the reaction. This selective character of chelate-forming organic compounds is one of their most interesting and most valuable properties. As a matter of fact, the largest number of their practical applications is based upon their specificity.4,7-l3 Once a chelate compound is formed, its character is definitely "organic" in nature. In other words, its properties are conditioned to a much larger degree by the carbon chains or rings than by the metallic atom. Many inner complexes are soluble in nonpolar solvents such as benzene, paraffin oil or carbon tetrachloride, while the chelate-forming reagent before closure of the metal-organic ring is water soluble. (Example: copper complex of salicyl-aldoxime') It is obvious that such particular properties as those indicated above can be utilized whenever specificity and practically complete binding of inorganic ions into an undissociable complex are required. One of the well-known applications of chelate-forming compounds has been the development of specific reagents in analytical chemistry, creation of the spot-test method,4,14-16 and the application of the same principles to the contact print method for determining minerals." Chelate-forming Compounds as Collectors In the field of flotation, where selectivity is often a quality of paramount importance for the collector, various workers have lately attempted to apply their knowledge of specific organic analytical reagents to this purpose. Dimension stone is considered by many the premium material for beauty and durability in institutional and monumental construction. Nonetheless in the United States it commands an ever decreasing share of the total market. At the beginning of the century dimension stone accounted for more than half the stone produced in the United States, but by 1974 it accounted for little more than 0.2% and the number of producing quarries and finishing plants had greatly reduced. This decrease in use is accounted for in part by competition from cheaper materials, but another factor seems to be the demand by many designers for uniformity and exact repetition of modular units in construction. Even where stone is used in large buildings modem architects want blandness of pattern and uniformity of color in the stone. Because most natural stone contains variations in color and pattern great strain is put on the quarriers to overcome this and produce a uniform product. This results in increased costs, increased waste at the quarries, and consequently increased price in the market. In spite of this, stone is still looked on as the most prestigious of building materials and its aesthetic appeal is born out by the many simulated stone patterns found in synthetic materials. End Use and Specifications The principal uses of dimension stone are in building construction and monuments. Other uses include flagging, curbing, paving, mill-stock slate, roofing slate, laboratory furniture, and refractory brick. Because many of these uses overlap, an orderly classification of dimension stone uses is most difficult. Various classifications have been used by Cumer (1960), Barton (1968), the U.S. Bureau of Mines yearbooks, and the Building Stone Institute (Anon., 1972).

IT is the purpose of this paper to describe in detail the laboratory development and mill application of an unusual combination of flotation reagents employed in the concentrator of the Climax Molybdenum Co., on the Continental Divide, near Leadville, Lake County, Colorado. This development originated in an ore-dressing research laboratory maintained by Climax at the experimental plant of the Colorado School of Mines, which is staffed by men directly employed by the Climax Molybdenum Co. Mill-scale testing of laboratory developments was supervised by a representative from the testing laboratory, working in close cooperation with the operating staff at the mill. General milling practice at Climax is ably described in a paper by E. J. Duggan,1 mill superintendent. Other aspects of the Climax project have been described in papers by W. J. Coulter,2 by Butler, Vanderwilt and Henderson3 by Allen Kissock,4 and by Leo H. Glanville.5 Consequently, this paper will be confined to the metallurgical aspects of recent reagent developments, avoiding, as much as possible, repetition of material covered in these earlier publications. BRIEF HISTORY OF REAGENT PRACTICE AT CLIMAX Prior to the year 1937, the only reagents employed at Climax for froth production and collecting action in the flotation of molybdenite were steam-distilled or destructively distilled pine oils. The only exceptions to this practice were brief periods of mill testing, when reagents of various types were tried on an experimental basis. None of these experimental runs was sufficiently encouraging to justify its continuation as regular practice. Sodium, cyanide has been employed since the very early days of milling at Climax as an inhibiting agent for control of pyrite and chalcopyrite. Alkaline reagents such as lime or soda ash have been used in recent years to minimize the detrimental effect of iron salts on flotation of molybdenite. The presence of these harmful salts is attributed to the decomposition of fine metallics abraded from liners and balls in the first stage of regrinding rougher concentrate. Flint pebbles are used in subsequent regrinding, since alkaline reagents are not entirely adequate to offset the inhibiting effect of iron salts as the grind becomes progressively finer and the grade of concentrate progressively higher. Climax metallurgists were familiar at an early date with the use of petroleum products such as kerosene and gas oil as promoters of flotation of molybdenite. Charles C. Oliver6 discussed the use of pine oil and kerosene as early as 1920, in connection with the milling practice at Dominion Molybdenite Co., Quebec. Never theless, the early attempts to apply this knowledge in the Climax concentrator were complete failures.
